health with the Man. So this session on tonight basically

(01:35):
it's gonna be not on one session. I think this
is going to have to go on another session because
of what's going on on the in the world today tonight.
No matter first Ecclesiasty George, this show Cozic Kojik seventy

(02:01):
six Holy Complication is going on at New Jerusalem Missionary
Baptist Church in Las Vegas. That's off of Martin Luther
King and Owens. I would like to thank Bishop Rogers
for that happen on tonight. I know our church is going,

(02:28):
is happening, is having a great time on tonight. It's
going to be at seven pm starting tonight on Pacific
Standard time in Las Vegas, Novada. And I would like
to thank Bishop Bronson, bench Bishop Bronson. I love Bishop
Bronson because he's doing some great things in Las Vegas.
He's our jurisdiction bishop of Las Vegas. He's doing some

(02:52):
really great things. And I just look really forward to
what he's doing in Las Vegas because reading why I'm
saying that because I love this man to death. He
when I was playing with the Jewish didicition. And believe me, Jurisdician,
I will be back when I was playing with the

(03:16):
Jewisdiction when I was a kid.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
He him and the other bishop that I'm about to
tell tell you about, Bishop Murray.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Bishop Hall does nothing but spoke life to me when
I was up there playing those drooms. So shouts out
to Bishop Bronson and his clergy and his staff, and
Bishop Murray and clergy and staff, and one other thing.

(03:47):
I'm just really excited on Bishop, no, not Bishop, but
music director of Bronson for his doing this thing on
this this week. He is really showing up and showing
out for these musicians in Las Vegas. Keep on doing

(04:10):
your thing in Las Vegas. So let's welcome our guests.
Pastor Anthony Harris. What's going on, Hey, sir, how you doing.
I'm doing great. I'm just enjoying myself and making things happen.

(04:31):
But this topic that we're having on tonight, it's a
really good topic because we lost a lot of musicians
on this situation. Mental health and stretching situations and stuff

(04:54):
like that. Give us the the world a little background
on what you what you do as a in your practice.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Okay, uh Well, I am a pastor uh here in
the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. But I'm also a
licensed clinical social worker, which is a therapist, a mental
health therapist, and I you know, I'm able to.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
Diagnose mental health issues.

Speaker 4 (05:27):
I work with people with depression, anxieties, traumas, couple's therapy,
just a.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Whole nine as of right now, a lot of them.

Speaker 4 (05:38):
I counsel with everyone, but I want to start actually
focusing my my focus, if you will, on teaching the
African American community more about mental health and to actually
help men to recover from some of the issues that
they've had regarding emotional traumas and and and those kinds

(06:01):
of things as well.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
Yes, sir, Yes, sir. The reason why I'm saying that
to open it up because I'm literally going through a
situation like that. Yes, I've traveled the world. Yes it
didn't work out. It hasn't worked out for me right now,

(06:26):
but I thank God that God is still in the
working business. He still left is still open up on
the doors. Thank God for me being a musician. If
I wasn't a musician, I wasn't able to be able
to teach like I am doing right now with Music

(06:51):
Lessons Las Vegas or teach lessons in general. Shouts out
to music Music Lessons Las Vegas. He's one of my
real good friends. He's been on this show, Patrick Worley.

(07:12):
He's the owner of Music Lessons Las Vegas. Basically, it's
the UH directory that, like say, for instance, if anybody
is looking for a musician two or an instructor to
teach them lessons. That's basically where to go to in

(07:37):
Las Vegas musicians music lessons Las Vegas dot com. Look
it up and you will be able to find my information.
You will be able to find all the information from
jazz guitar, from strings to bass, two piano, opera, everything,

(08:01):
everything you name that has something to do with arts,
it is in that directory. Pastor, I have been born
through so much like say, for instance, I get to
another parts of the city or parts of the country
and people don't know, but you may know that I

(08:30):
am on seizure medicine. Yes, I was born with seizures,
but I haven't had an epiletic seizure in twenty or
thirty years, thank God to God's.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Be the word that I haven't.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Had the seizure in that amount of time since that
amount of times so ever, since I crossed the the
United on the state line or whatever. You know, it's
it's been. It's I'm just gonna put it out that

(09:09):
point blank. It's been hell. Not like that, but it's
been held like to where far as a home, you know,
can't find a place to live. Basically, you know, I

(09:29):
was trusting God, you know, on this situation.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
But then.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Satan always have to put his hands in and try
to manipulate. You know, he's the chief, he was the
chief musician on the situation, on on on in God,
you know, with God, you know, basically not you know,
and God has to had to basically knock him down
and let him know I'm in the head and and

(09:57):
and and I'm the one that you have to live
to you and you're you're basically not the one I
have been basically with without any medication, I had basically
had to go into a doctor's office and they tells

(10:18):
me that okay, we can't assist you. We can't do
we can't we can't handle nothing. I've been basically crying
for the past two and a half to three almost
three weeks, you know, you know, not bad tears, but
you know, you know, situations to where God, I trust you,

(10:45):
but on what the world are you doing? What's going
on that I can't see fit that what is happening?
What is to where I can't you know, have the
metal medication or I can't live my every day nor

(11:07):
of my life like I normally do. Play in the drums.
I haven't been on a set of a set of
drums ever since June the first, So that's actually been
an in shouts out to Pastor Kelly and Lady Kelly
at Vegas View Church at Garden Price and the overseer

(11:30):
of Vegas View Administrative Mason. You know, there's nothing without family,
you know, because I love him dearly. I just can't
wait to see him. You can't wait to hug him
and came to wait to say a mission guys, because
this this road has been a tough road.

Speaker 5 (11:53):
Okay, so you're saying that, you say that for yourself
or you ask me a questions.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
This has been a tough role for this has This
is basically my testimony. That's how Oh yeah, yeah, I'm
letting you know what I went through. You just didn't
understand it till right now.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
Yeah. Absolutely, I'm letting you.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Know mental health situations. Musicians go go through a lot,
not even just through with the church homes or church wherever,
musicians go through a lot in general. Yeah, speak to
you know, you know, so speak to those musicians that

(12:40):
is going through certain similar situations that I am like
going through right now.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Yeah, absolutely, you know, for many people, excuse me, for
many people. People are going through a whole lot of.

Speaker 3 (12:55):
Stuff lately, especially the times actually.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
The things that we're going through in our country today,
all the different changes and all the different fears and
what have you, and they're just trying to maneuver through life.
Can cause people to really think about their lives and
having control and not having control.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Over their lives, you know.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
And with musicians, you know, some of the things that
they go through in terms of you know, I was
born and raised in church myself.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
We are know that we grew up in church together.

Speaker 6 (13:29):
And you know, with the musicians, for some that's their livelihood,
that's how they make their living, and then for others
it's just something that they just do. But then there
are many others who are who.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
Are good at what they do, but they have families
as well, they have lives that they have to live,
they have bills they have to pay, they have all
these different things as well. And then the church itself
is a whole different animal. That's just a whole different
it's a whole different machine that you're dealing with.

Speaker 3 (14:07):
In terms of musicians.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
Basically, what you want to do as far as anybody
really is concerned is learn what's going on with you,
learning how to identify what your emotions are, learn how
to regulate those emotions, and then learn how to change them,
and even learn the learn empathy, which is understanding how

(14:30):
other people feel so that their feeling won't affect you
in a negative way.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
And then and then just.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
Process those feelings, work through and be honest about those feelings.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
That's really how people can really get.

Speaker 4 (14:44):
Through some of the tough situations that they're going through
right now.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Yes, sir, Like say, for instance, my business's name is
God Be Love Productions, so it's APG Global Productions, and
all I've been doing is living love. And it's kind

(15:12):
of hard when I have a big heart and people
take your kindness for your weakness, or they don't believe
that you can't can't handle situations or they can't or
or you understand. We're we're we're like the older musicians. Now,

(15:33):
those junk cats out there, they basically just out there
just basically to make a living or to go to church,
church and church. Some of them have three or four
churches at one time, and they're not getting fed. That's
not good. I play for the church. When I play

(16:02):
for the church, I only play for that one church.
And if I have to play for another church, sometimes
it's for a blessing or sometimes I don't you know
church too much, you know, But and then I have
to get some go somewhere besides my home church. They's
your churches in Christ and and get fed somewhere. You

(16:26):
understand what I'm saying, because I'm out there. I'm out there,
you know. You know, given my gifts like my my
my living drop always tell me, she obvious say go
out there and play for the audience of one. So basically,
the flesh won't take over. When I'm talking trying to

(16:50):
say to you as far as the flesh, can you
give insight on how the flesh can take over in
the ministry, either in the church and ministry or whatever

(17:10):
thing that you are doing. How how can the flesh do?

Speaker 3 (17:16):
How can it take over? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (17:19):
Absolutely, yes, the flesh really, that's that's the part of
us that that wants our own way. It just wants
us to have our own desires, our own needs met.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (17:32):
And of course those desires for many, For many those
desires can be evil desires and they can be selfish
and stubborn and prideful, and you know, it's just about
getting getting your way, and sometimes those things can really
get in the way of ministry that you're not able

(17:52):
to really minister the way that you need to minister,
because it's no longer about God, it's.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
More about you. And the more or that you begin
to do that, then.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
Psychologically or mentally, it can affect your mental health when
you are basically doing things for yourself. And in this
particular case, as we're talking about musicians and I guess
more specifically church musicians, that being a ministry that that
allows allows.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
You to use your gifts.

Speaker 4 (18:26):
However, when when the focus is off on the flesh
in terms of what it is that I want, this
is what I desire.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Then it stops. It stops being about.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
God and it starts being about you, which means it
stops being about God's strength in you, and it becomes
more about your reliance on your own strength, which is
which opens up the door for the enemy to come
into the mind and begin to torment your mind regarding

(19:00):
some of these things that you're wanting from your flesh.
So the flesh is necessary, just like a preacher would
have to do that before he gets up and preach
or she gets up and preaches. You gotta be able
to crucify that flesh so that the earth earthly and
fleshly desires are not being fulfilled.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
You know, I understand exactly what you're saying as far
as of that situation or that matter, crucifying the flesh.
I do that every time I step on the drums.
There're sometimes that I pray or I listen to a

(19:46):
certain type of music to rest my mind before I
get out get up there on that podium to play
that uh that that drum set. Because if you don't
do that, and if you do put yourself in the
mind of the flash, basically Satan takes over everything. And

(20:13):
we don't want Satan to be in the that that
that aron. Basically, what I'm trying to say is we
got to give all God the glory, and all God
all the praise, and all God to all the honor
because of if if it wasn't for Him, we wouldn't

(20:33):
be able to be able to do what we're doing
as a musician, as a servant of God, as a
lead white as a minister. When you in the music industry,
in the church. M Yes, So it's a whole lot

(20:58):
that musicians go through. As far as when we playing
for those churches.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
You have to.

Speaker 2 (21:13):
I don't know about any other musicians, but I I
pray a lot. I do fast. I fast one twice
one one, one or two times a week or sometimes
not sometimes every time before I h I don't eat

(21:39):
until after service.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
I have to.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
Uh, I have to drink something because of of what
what what I'm I'm pushing out. You know, like say,
for instance, as drummers, you are drummer too. You started
as a drummer with me, so you know exactly what
we what we're doing when we when we play those drums. Uh,

(22:05):
we were when we when we out there and we
ministering to God's people, we had to make sure that
we are real well rested. We have to make sure
that we are well prepared far as tho little songs
and when we have to make sure that were well
prepared in the ministry as far as of what songs

(22:25):
that we're rendering to God and his people. We can't
we just be out there just playing anything. You know,
you know, you get you get some of those musicians,
but not in Vegas. I'm not saying in Vegas. I
have a lot of musicians that I really look up to.

(22:47):
Mike Morel and his his Clue that's over there in
Los Angeles.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
I look up to.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
Len Giftson, I look up to trying to Train, I
listen to listen to look up to m Z Drummer.
I know they have God in them, you know. So
there's a lot of musicians that I really observe and

(23:20):
think because of of God, and you know what He's
doing for them in their lives. Because this, this road
or this this industry is not an easy road, you know,
as far as a musician wise.

Speaker 3 (23:36):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know.

Speaker 4 (23:40):
And it's like in life in general, what's going on
in our society today and life in general is just
kind of difficult for many people to, you know, just
kind of maneuver through things that's going on in life.
But you know, sometimes there are populations that we don't
necessarily tell a lot of attention to, which may be

(24:02):
you know, musicians are part of that as well.

Speaker 3 (24:05):
So you know, statistically speaking, we.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
May not have.

Speaker 4 (24:12):
A lot of information on some specific populations, but every
population is made up of people. So so all these statistics,
mental health statistics, what have you?

Speaker 3 (24:25):
Wells are still.

Speaker 4 (24:30):
Dealing with people, So we just want to keep that
in mind whenever we're dealing with people and their and
their mental health.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
Yes, so how did how did? How did was? Why
wasn't I'm just asking you, pastor why wasn't on just uh,
mental health as a whole. Why didn't we just unto
Why was mental health for men this month? Was the

(25:03):
particular reason?

Speaker 4 (25:06):
Yes, June is June is Men's Mental health Awareness months,
and it was it was, you know, determined that you know,
men need their needs to be more mental health awareness
amongst men in our particular society on today, mental health

(25:28):
for men and not really is not really addressed as
much as it is for women. And it became necessary
to understand that because the even the suicide rates among
men is much higher than it is for women women.
Statistically speaking, women tend to attempt suicide more, but men

(25:50):
tend to accomplish it more.

Speaker 3 (25:52):
And that's because for.

Speaker 4 (25:53):
Several reasons, but one main reason is because women tend
to attempt suicide. Now this is not put everyone, but
in a general in a general sense speaking, women tend
to attempt suicide from non immediate, non immediate lethal means.

(26:14):
Women tend to do things like take pills or you know,
take some kind of poison or you know, cut their
wrists or what have you, which allows them some time
to you know, get to the hospital.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
And and what have you.

Speaker 4 (26:28):
Whereas men tend to be more violent in their suicide attempts,
which is, you know, driving their car their car off
a cliff, or hanging themselves or shooting themselves or what
have you.

Speaker 3 (26:40):
Instant death.

Speaker 4 (26:41):
And these things need to be understand understood when it
comes to men's mental health versus women's mental health. Now,
because it looks different for each, it looks different for each.
For depression, men tend to show more signs.

Speaker 3 (26:56):
And symptoms of.

Speaker 4 (27:00):
Irritability and signs of more violence and making poorer decisions
and those kinds of things. And when that happens, we
tend to look at men as being you know, just
angry men or irresponsible or what have you, and we
won't pay close attention to the fact that it might

(27:21):
be a mental health disorder. And so we we, you know,
we kind of you know, just say that women are
just more emotional. So when you see a woman that's emotional, you,
you know, just kind of say, well, that's just how
women are and that kind of thing.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
But you know, even even in that, we've got.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
To pay close attention to people and.

Speaker 3 (27:44):
How they behave and act and what have you.

Speaker 4 (27:46):
So as far as men are concerned, the word is
starting to get out a little bit more that there
are a lot of issues that men have, mental health
issues that men have as well. Now here's something that's
a growing number. It's a growing number that is starting

(28:07):
to to kind of be a little bit more revealed,
and that is some of the domestic violence that's happening
in the homes of men. We understand that domestic violence happens,
but then there other types of domestic abuse, as they say,

(28:27):
in the homes of men, and men have just been
taught to take it.

Speaker 3 (28:33):
We've just been taught to We've been taught to just
just take it. You're a man.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
You supposed it when when you get hipsie.

Speaker 4 (28:46):
Or you know, you're called pathetic or you know, a
poor example of a man or what have you, and
we're just supposed to take that as if you know,
that's what men are supposed to do. But technically that
is is that is domestic abuse, and men go through
these things. I hear them all the time, I talk

(29:06):
to them all the time, and there's so many stories
of men who are actually being abused, but either they
don't know it because they don't define Men don't define
domestic abuse the same way women do. That's why most
men don't report it. Most men don't report domestic abuse
because they see it differently.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
Than women do.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
But now those statistics are now changing because men are
now starting to report some of these emotional abuse, verbal.

Speaker 3 (29:38):
Abuse, psychological abuse.

Speaker 4 (29:40):
Threats, manipulation, gas lighting, all these different things that are
happening in their homes. They're now starting to we're now
start to talk about a little bit more which is
causing men to become more mentally.

Speaker 2 (29:57):
Healthy as real interested. I didn't know it that it's
like that difference as far as of the men and
then from the women.

Speaker 3 (30:11):
And so.

Speaker 2 (30:13):
I do understand that we do as a man, we
look at things totally different because than the women, because
of like say, for instance, I'm just giving you know,
just a hypothetical situation that I don't understand. I do
not like, uh, you know, how we was raised. We

(30:38):
was raised to always be there for our wives, or
make sure that we're taking care of them as a husband,
you know, and when i'm as me as a man,
it's not it don't feel good to not to bring
something to the table, right. So, uh, that's where I'm

(31:05):
I'm I'm I'm like, not under I don't understand. It's
it's not it's so when I'm on this, when I'm
on this, when I was on this journey, I'm just
thankful that God is still seen fit to wherever I
still have, you know, restings coming in. All I just

(31:28):
have to do is just get back on my my
on my throne. My thank God that God has seen
fit to mename me as Roderick. My wife told me
that it is means king and Swiss means like a mission,

(31:52):
like it's on, it's it's going fast, it's like a
a w a will like like you understand what I'm saying, So,
Mighty Ruler, That's basically what I'm saying. So is looking up.
I'm just thankful just for forgiving me that name, that
Robert Swift senor so. And I'm I'm making sure that

(32:15):
i'm you know, I had to find my my name
to the fullest because my name means king and the
means ruler over everything. So and I'm not taking it
that for for granted. I just need to get back
on the throne of grace where God has told me
to be at and that's that's those drums, you know,

(32:38):
and I needed that this break. But you know, God
is told telling me to get back where you're manifested
in is feeding, feeding God's people and serving him through
the ministry of music. So if it's okay with you,

(33:04):
next week, we're gonna have to resume on this because
I know that my our co host, Philip Butler the
third right now, he's on a mission right now in
South not South Carolina, but Kansas City, so he had

(33:27):
a lot of stuff to do. But he was like,
can we resume next week? I was like, We're gonna
still do this show and next week we're gonna have
to do another another tool to the session session. If
you have another hour, another forty five minutes for us, Okay,

(33:51):
all right, it sounds good, So pastor up. Before we
should close the show, I would like to thank Jerry
Roy's Positive Live Positive Power to One a mentor Batman
for just opening up these airways. Jerry russ alive. He's
opened up this airways so where we can reach over

(34:13):
one hundred and fifty countries as we speak in right now.
I would like to thank our listeners in the United
States and our listeners in United Kingdom. That's the most listeners.
That's where we have our most listeners in the United
States in the United UK. So I would like to

(34:33):
thank them for that. But before we close this show
on tonight, do you have anything positive that we can
say into this world.

Speaker 4 (34:47):
Yeah, I would just simply say, you know, hang in there.
I know people say that all the time, but basically,
there is hope. There is no such thing as never
having hope. There is always hope. As long as we
have God on our side, we always have hope. And
there are people out there that care about you. There
are people out there that love you. There are people

(35:09):
out there that are going to see you succeed and do.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
Well in life.

Speaker 4 (35:13):
And you know, God has does have a plan for
your life, and we want you to be able to
make sure that you understand that that God does have
a plan for your life.

Speaker 3 (35:24):
And there is hope. There is hope. There is hope.
There is hope.

Speaker 4 (35:28):
Never forget that never forget that and you'll be all right.

Speaker 3 (35:33):
Yes, sir.

Speaker 2 (35:36):

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose.
