say plays.

of the Bison, Sam Niederman.
Speaker 5 (00:36):
Welcome into the Bison Football Radio Show here tonight with
you live at the Holiday Inn. Happy to have you
a board today on the program. Look at this awesome
crowd we've got here in middle of October as the
Beison are gearing up for another road test in Missouri
Valley Football Conference play. I am Andy Rickop. Happy to
(00:56):
be filling in for Sam Niederman here tonight. He's on
the road of basketball. They've got a game down in
the Cities against Minnesota exhibition season, so buying some basketball
getting underway and crossover season is upon us. So happy
to be with you filling in for Sam today alongside
the head coach, Tim Paulasek. Here with us. That's the
round of Applaza, the head coach here with us once again.
(01:16):
Happy to have him aboard. Coach. Great to see you
halfway done with the season and halfway to go here
in the middle of October. Good to see you, my friend.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Right, guys are walking in right off the golf course.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
How about the night we have in athletics. Big game
for soccer, volleyball, basketball. Whistle, those guys all the best.
Speaker 5 (01:35):
A lot going fired up for our.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Game this Saturday. It's going to be imperative. We come
out with big juice.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
I have been a really big fall for Bison athletics,
a big winter coming upon us. Is a basketball season
not too far away. We said basketball for men's basketball
tonight down there in the Cities. Women's basketball is going
with some exhibitions here as well. I know you've mentioned
this a couple of times, that the family aspect of
Bison athletics that you want to continue to spread throughout
athletics and the community.
Speaker 4 (01:58):
Yeah, it was really cool today leaving the practice field
trying to hustle down here. Jory Collins must have had
a pretty good prospect on campus and to go over
and shake hands with them, and hey, this is a
family deal like, people around here will take care of you.
And yeah, that's what makes Bison Nation pretty cool.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
And I really do.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
I've been a sports fan all my life, grew up
playing three sports, and so it's just kind of natural.
But I really appreciate all the head coaches in our department.
We've got some unbelievable people that our student athletes get
to work with.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
At Jory Collins, I know they appreciate bringing recruits and
limbs of football games too. The entrance you guys have
in the performance on the field definitely helps all programs
here at NDSU. Well here with the head coach, Tim Paulisek.
Obviously he'll be here with us for a little while
about seven fifteen or so. We will be joined tonight
talking code green a little bit. How about that buys
in defense, everybody, Ah, I's in defense pretty darnk good
(02:49):
right now, holding every team under twenty points so far
this season. And Cody Morgan, defensive tackles coach, will be
stopping bound with us on the second hour of the program,
also joined by two members of that defense of time
as Room, Keenan Wilson and Logan Larson will also be
stopping by two members right there in the middle, eating
up some blocks for you guys in that D line.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Yeah, it's always good if you have a hard time
choosing who to come on the radio show and people
have heard from Jack Jackson Duton that for Hey, Cody,
I'm sorry. Keenan and Logan have done such a good
job and it's really cool. Logan's like unbelievable entrepreneur. He's
got a couple of things going, he works hard at it.
You know, he's washing windows in the summer, and he's
(03:27):
got such an unbelievable personality. So I thought it would
be cool for Bison Nation to get a chance to
get to know him a little bit better. And then
Keenan Wilson's playing at a really high level, and you know,
he's a young guy with a really bright future, and
I'm excited about how those guys are playing.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Keenan Wilson had massive play for your guys just last week,
and end of the first tip, he's the one that
knocked the ball out of DJ Williams hands, gets the
ball back to the offense and you end up going
up seven to nothing at the end of the first Yeah, I.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Know, we'll talk about the game a little bit. It's
probably a twenty one point swing, right, you know, as
good as they were, you know, low in the red
zone which is ten and in right, and then you
get down to the goal line.
Speaker 6 (04:02):
That quarterback's a problem down there.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
In that play, I think, you know, single handedly injected
opportunity for the offense, right, and then we knew we
were coming out of halftime with the ball and just
like that, I'm telling you, those those swings, right, you
got to be able to We're gonna have to overcome
one at some point this season, but continue to put
pressure on people in the middle eight. And that was
all cultivated by the defense, it really was. And the
(04:27):
defense in the second half was really good. I mean
two for two on third down, two more takeaways getting
it back to the offense.
Speaker 6 (04:34):
And we had a blast.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Yeah, it was a fun game against Southern Illinois. NDSU
ends up getting the win. They moved to six and
zero on the season, protect home field once again forty
five seventeen the final there against the Slookies. Will touch
on that one preview. Obviously, another big game, a road
test for you guys this weekend on Saturday out in
Tara Hote taken on Indiana State. Before we get to
that stuff. To the coach, I did want to start
off today if I was pointed to start off the
(04:56):
conversation today on the show with you about what took
place earlier this week. Really important day across all of NDSU,
all of NDSU athletics and specifically for your football program.
With NDSU Giving dayas campus wide, and you look at
the numbers as it took place earlier this week, I
see over two point nine million dollars for NDSU as
a campus for athletics, over four hundred and ninety thousand
(05:17):
dollars for you guys football as well. Having a really good,
uh you know, a couple of days there with the
NDSU Giving Day. How huge was that for your program
moving forward?
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Well, first, let's just start off by saying thank you
to the people, and if anybody's comfortable, I'd love to
see a show hands of the people that were contributed.
Speaker 5 (05:32):
Absolutely, look at that. It's all of them coming up.
It's all who come here for this one. It's all
applause for them.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Yeah, it's what makes it so special. You know what's
cool is I I I have I'm a little bit
indifferent to you know, you continue to ask, and you
continue to ask, and people continue to pour into our
our unbelievable program the athletics department. But that's kind of
become a pretty cool day, something that I kind of
look forward to because it is an opportunity to reach
out and to talk to so many people to say
(06:01):
thank you. I'm not gonna say his name because he
might not want me to, but I call the guy
that played in twenty eleven and twelve eleven was his
last year. He was doing great things from Texas and
I said, man, if we could hit this five hundred market,
be really cool, and we're eighteen five short kind of thing.
He texted me three minutes later. Guys, it said, coach,
(06:22):
it's under fifteen. And if you guys know who this
person is, you never would have thought in a million
years this guy would be doing what he's doing in
the success he's having at thirty four, thirty three years
old or thirty five whatever. He is unbelievable story with
the Houston kid, and I'm so grateful for guys like that,
and I just I think we're just getting started.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
We need to bring those guys in.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Man. Am I grateful for the support. You know, that's
gonna give us a real chance to fight really hard
in December.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
Lutely. Yeah, I love more of those stories. There's a
ton of them out there, and more and more each
and every year. Binding's the nation really supporting this next
generation here on the football field and across all of athletics.
One of those guys as well, I mean, Billy Turner
has had a challenge for you guys. Hey, you raised
two hundred thousand, putting a big chunk of money myself,
and I know that's a guy that's near and dear
to your heart.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Well, Billy by nature as a giving person, Billy's also
a very smart business guy, and you know, he's come
up with a game plan here to kind of try
to get his foundation to grow to support more more things.
And then his overall picture of NDSU Athletics and what
he wants to do moving forward is actually pretty remarkable.
I think Billy Turner is just getting started, you know,
(07:33):
But it takes a guy. You know, don't always judge
those NFL guys too hard because until they sign a
second contract, they can't really get in the mode of giving.
And so we got to hang in there. With some
of our young people. But Billy's won. But Dylan Raiden
has supported the weight room and nutrition and volleyball because
his wife played here. There's so many great stories East
(07:54):
since stick. I think the first day that he was
done playing, you know, had a scholarship endowment. And I
probably shouldn't talk too much about what everybody does individually,
but I think those guys, you know, starting with Billy
and Billy leading that is really remarkable. Billy gives a
lot more than just money to the program too. He's
part of our program in spring, he's around our guys
(08:14):
in fall camp with the mental approach and with playing
the position of offensive line. He's he's a remarkable young man.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
Yeah, we see him a lot, especially in the spring.
He's up here for spring ball. Also hard to miss
when he's up here. Yeah, yeah, that was a personality.
Yeah for sure. What today's like giving day do for
I mean, and it's you athletics, you know athletics, why
but also specifically for your program? What do they allow
you guys to do well?
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I think number one, it allows for an opportunity for connection,
you know. The one thing that I myself and mister
Larsen keep talking about a lot. Is like it's one
thing to give, but how can we create opportunities for
these people to come to practice and to really feel
part of it, you know, put him on the headsets
and let them listen to play calls. And I think
the more that we move this Green and Goal Fun forward,
(08:57):
you know, it's kind of started by the Green and
Goal Collective creating opportunity, special opportunities for people to see
inside look into our program. And I'm really open to
that that is not a distraction. If our players can't
handle that, we can't go win a football game. And
so you guys are always welcome to come to practice,
you know, the supporters, and so I think it just
gives us another opportunity to touch base with them.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Hey, you mentioned the Green and Gold Fun with any
Issue Giving day. This year it was all the to
the fun passions has been the Excellence Fund, other things
that also very important, but this year was going to
the Green and Gold Fund for specific athletics teams and
then to the athletics wise.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Well, we have an unbelievable format laid out that I'm
so comfortable sitting here and saying, guys, you can support
this these players are gonna earn it. They're gonna be retained.
They have to stay out of trouble. They have to
do the community service that we ask them to do
and more. Okay, they have to show up with a
bubbly personality and give back and just so everybody knows,
(09:52):
you know, six months ago, five months ago, when I
was working with Jay Bartley with the collective over and
over again, Jay Bartley said, the football players respond the fastest.
They always do what we ask them to do. They've
never asked questions. They just say Roger that. But with
the format that we've laid out with our players specifically
getting rewarded for reps played on the football field, what
(10:14):
year in school are they okay? And then are they
an ambassador one of our best that we want to
keep around here. Okay, we're rewarding those guys in December,
and we got to get ready to fight. And I'm
talking every day, building relationships with our players, coaching them
to the best, continuing to put a product out there
that says you can get drafted from here, you can
win championships. And I can't wait for that. I can't
(10:35):
wait to sit with the young man and If we
end up losing one, fine, we'll move forward and we'll
coach the next guy.
Speaker 5 (10:41):
I work with Jay Barley doing some pregame radio shows.
I don't think I respond that quick to him. Kind
of a headache sometimes, but no, we love Jay out
there and all abuys in nation. Let's take our first break.
We're settled in here a little bit at the Holiday Inn.
Come on out here if you're listening, enjoy the great
burger basket we've got, and say hello to coach Paul.

Power to Find ndisgu Athletics and the b and are
powered by beef. North Dakota's beef producers are proud to
(13:36):
provide real fuel for real athletes before we dive into
the rest of it. And we were talking Ndsugiving Day
with your coach in the last segment. I know some
members of NDESU Athletics been working kind of overtime this
week for it.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Well we've done we've done such a good job with
the help of so many but Derek Emily and Jack Moond,
you know, just they've been working hard to get the
same transition to where it's in the you know, Green
and Gold Farm and it's it's in house, you know,
creating a structure there. And so I just wanted to
say personally thank you, and probably you know, not everybody
gets this opportunity, but on behalf of all all sports,
(14:11):
you know, all the head coaches, we want to say
thank you to those guys.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Have we had a chance have Derek Lang on our
radio show here locally earlier in the week. Those guys
are working overtime for sure, absolutely deserve a little bit
of extra credit for what they are doing out there.
And with the Green and Gold film, we should mention,
you know, big thing for them to at tax deductible
as well. All the money you don't it goes towards
your teammaker's points. All that stuff does add up.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Yeah, and then we just got to keep being creative
to cultivate opportunities for those guys to get inside looks
into our program and special cool neat things that our
support gets to have the you know, everybody else doesn't
get to be part.
Speaker 5 (14:44):
Of as we did, say, six games down, six games
to go. Is it crazy to believe you are halfway
through another at least regular season. We know we're going
some playoff games out there as well, but halfway done
with a regular season as a go by quick for
you and the staff. When you're out there, it.
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Really does fly. And then when you hear things like
basketball season starting, Major League Baseballs in the playoffs, you know,
you know, we're on fifty straight days of football here.
With college football, it does time flies by when you're
enjoying it, you're enjoying the players. But it's also my
one of my favorite times of the year because now
we can start to talk about. Okay, guys, what was
goal number one? It's to establish home field advantage in
(15:21):
the playoffs. We're in conference play now. Every one of
these games is going to matter towards us reaching goal
number one. You know, by the way, goal too is
to be the most physical team in the country, and
goal three is just simply to eliminate the noise and
focus on what we're talking about in house. But I
always feel I've always felt like if we can establish
home field advantage, North Dakota State's got a.
Speaker 5 (15:42):
Shot absolutely one hundred percent of we know home through
the advantage is a pretty powerful advantage here inside of
the Fargo Dome. What do you like most about your
team first half of this season?
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Man, we run really well. We're fast, you know, offensively,
I'll tell you, like, it's interesting. I got a piece
of analysts that I normally don't look at. But when
we get the first first down, we're ninety percent of
the time going to get another first down. With guys
like Bryce Cole, Rajah Jackson, Williams, Brika, DJ Scott, Drew Kessel.
(16:15):
Now the longer we're on the field, we're gonna make
an explosive play. I mean, I'm just so pleased with
Cole's accuracy downfield. I'm so pleased with the development and
the growth and the old line, especially pass protection, they've
been really good. And then defensively, it's kind of I
don't want to say it's what I thought, but Grant's
done a really good job of cultivating energy and juice.
(16:38):
But you're seeing a lot of young guys to play.
But to see Donovan Wollen come in there and just
start and play well. Nathaniel Stalling. We haven't skipped a
beat with the other Mike linebackers. The defense is playing
really good. We never talk about Logan Kopp, and he's
probably the best defensive player on our football.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
We've said we don't talk about him enough because he
does everything, but he just somehow he's under the radar
a little bit with how he does it. Just a
great person. I think that linebacker unit as a whole.
I'd put that unit up against any unit in the
country right now without those three are playing.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
Yeah, they're playing fast. They're playing fast, and they bring
some They bring some thump when they get to the party.
Speaker 6 (17:13):
I like that.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
I'll tell you know, Logan CoP's gonna play a great
football game this week.
Speaker 6 (17:18):
He is.
Speaker 4 (17:18):
I will say that wasn't his best performance last week.
He's gonna play outstanding on Saturday.
Speaker 5 (17:24):
What are some of the things you want to see
improvements for in the second happen? I know you've got
a couple of them. You gotta see it.
Speaker 4 (17:29):
Well, maybe just like our recall, you know, like even
from a practice standpoint, like not letting the play three
weeks ago show up, you know that we had and
then like we don't have any recall. I'd like to
see our recall and our recognition and our communication during
games be a little bit better because I think everything
that happens, you know, in week four and week five
and week six, somehow there's got to be a benefit
(17:51):
that we went through those experiences and we can carry
it over to week ten and eleven. I most certainly wanna.
I'm hoping that special teams can get more opportunities so
that we can judge those guys. We've just kind of
been a couple of games where we haven't had any
chances because I think we can be really explosive on
kick return and punt return and then obviously you got
(18:12):
to do your job on punt and kickoff. But kickoff
has had a lot of opportunities. You know, I think
Aaron Bickerton's only got twelve or thirteen punts total, So
I'm okay with that.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
Yeah, I think even Aaron's okay with that. He puts
that out of social media. He's found with that too,
doing a great job holding. He's also holding, so he
got to give him credit.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
For that.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
Yeah, I would also probably add just I want to
see a little more consistency in our run game. Now,
I didn't mention this in the in the press conference,
and I felt so terrible, But those futures, the future offense,
we call them futures.
Speaker 6 (18:41):
We don't say twos or threes.
Speaker 4 (18:43):
The futures went out there for six points or six
minutes and fifty eight seconds and held on the ball
and we kneeled it. That's a heck of an accomplishment
for those future guys. I mean, Nathan had three completions.
He was on point and sharp, and we're gonna do that.
We gotta play the game out. We can't do you know,
sit on it. But I'd like to see us establish
a little more of a two back, you know, run game.
(19:05):
And then the good news is we still have Cole Payton.
We haven't ran them at all when you really look
at it, I mean it's been mostly scrambled, So we
still have that in our offense as well.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
Once the second half really gets going, which does start
this week, the second half of the regular season at least,
do you feel the importance start to ratchet up of,
like you said, accomplishing the goals of home field, winning
a Missouri Valley Conference regular season title.
Speaker 4 (19:26):
Those things, well, we had, you know, we had an
eight week training session. We talked about that a couple
of weeks ago, right, that was a session in this season.
Then we had, you know, two games to get into
conference play. That's precisely what I'm talking about. The cost
of poker goes up. And I'm not saying like we're full.
We just want to win by one more point than
our opponent has. But style points and how you do
(19:47):
it in seedings and rankings matter, and so it's very
critical that we stay you know, on the plus side
of the turnover margin. We stay very very penalized, very little,
you know, with procedural stuff, that kind of thing. You
darn right here we go, Right, we're in the middle
of this, and we're gonna need Bison Nation at our
home games as many people as possible to make it
(20:08):
to Indiana State and and we gotta win these games.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
We've gotta win all of them.
Speaker 5 (20:12):
And that's what the home games. But there's some close
road games these next couple of weeks too. When to
get any Bison fans of those ones, I'm not.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Sure who we play in a couple of weeks.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
We're focused on Indiana State, focus on as many of
these folks out here out to Tara hate as we
can for Saturday as well. That's absolutely right. I know.
A big thing you emphasize is the middle eight. We're
gonna touch on that when we come back. Take a
quick break here live at the Holiday and bides some
football radio show, some conversation on the middle eight and
how INNDYSU is dominating that. When we come back here

Paula Sack will be joined by Cody Morgan Defensive Tackles
coach here in just a little bit. No tickets to
give away. This week is a couple of road games
in a row. We did have some yard signs, though, coach.
You can I see a couple of them right here
in front of it. We gave some yards and people
who came here super early were set up before even
(24:14):
I was getting set up. I'm like, hey, get some
yard signs out in the yards here.
Speaker 4 (24:17):
There's a big battle for this. Yeah, we'll see it
at one o'clock here.
Speaker 5 (24:20):
It's a good spot and by one o'clock one am,
I think the yeah, yeah, one o'clock for us too.
The way we see it here from the holiday and
great spot here. We appreciate the folks of the Holiday

(24:40):
with their personalized service of a team you can trust,
and so how they've served the local communities for over
sixty years and it's why they're proud to support ndsu
go Binson from First Western Bank. Well, I mentioned before
we took a break in the last segment, coach, I
wanted to touch on the middle Lakes and know how
important that is to you guys, in the success of
your program each and every week. And did some research
(25:01):
on the first couple of weeks here of a conference
play in the Valley, and I got you down for
twenty four to three so far, also forced to fumble
and cause a turnover on downs defensively in the middle
eight so far in valley play pretty.
Speaker 4 (25:12):
Good, yeah in sixties eight or seventy to three over yeah,
overall like that. You know, it's interesting. I can remember
walking into the the offensive staff room and saying, you know, guys,
let's just make sure we're mindful. You know, we may
not be as good in the middle eight, you know,
So managing the clock late in halfs, not taking timeouts
(25:33):
to try to get it back was maybe gonna have
to be part of our DNA. And what occurred was camp.
Cam won like seventeen to two minute drills in a
row versus our defense last spring and last fall, and
Cole didn't get off to a rocky start, but man
our secondary was crystal clear that they were gonna be better.
But we were only like three of fourteen. But then
(25:56):
Cole started clicking some things off. We started having opportunities
on off defense to win in those drills. And we're
up to forty two to two minute drills that we've
practiced in fall camp and to date we do it
every Tuesday, this right now or every Monday.
Speaker 6 (26:11):
And so the.
Speaker 4 (26:13):
Idea behind the middle eight kind of comes from a
little bit of my frustration as a play caller that
we never got green lighted, you know, as coach bowls
like just run it out, let's take it to halftime,
right And Chris Climban was really good about managing a lead.
You know, Tim, let's be smart here, we get a
ten point lead, you know, let's not be overly aggressive.
And then at Wyoming it was kind of the same
(26:34):
before the end of the half. And I always said,
if I was gonna be a head coach and if
we were capable, we were gonna value every possession and
we're gonna try to score points until we're in the
mode of taking a knee. And so the combination of
playing good defense and being really comfortable with that and
then you know, us not having to burn timeouts on
formations or something that really provides some flexibility to be
(26:56):
aggressive at the end of half's, especially if you're getting
the ball back coming out.
Speaker 6 (26:59):
Of the tunnel.
Speaker 5 (27:00):
How'd seen the change to the two minute timeout being Adamy.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
Effect that it's everything. Yeah, it just we would not
be where we're at without that. It no, it also
has to It has to mean that I got to
be on top of some clock things. You know, when
to take a defensive timeout, when not to. There are
some golden rules that we live by. Like you guys,
don't ever get mad at me, but we'll probably not
take a defensive timeout on third down. If it's under
(27:25):
two forty one on the clock, we're.
Speaker 6 (27:27):
Gonna let it go to the two minute warning.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
We're really comfortable playing with a minute twenty left or
a minute twenty five left with two timeouts.
Speaker 6 (27:35):
Does that make sense?
Speaker 4 (27:36):
And so there's some real rules that you have to follow.
And we're a team that values our timeouts, Florida State,
Kansas State. They value the clock more than anything and
so they will burn their timeouts fast. But it's been
it's been fascinating learning all this stuff. And Pat Lily
does a really good job for me, our director of recruiting,
of having a chart and helping me out. And it's
(27:58):
been good.
Speaker 5 (27:58):
Yeah, it's been really good. Tell, it's been great for
you guys here so far. As great last week fourteen,
Nothing in that middle eight and the offense just the
I mean that was something, like you said, Cam was
so good at it last year, it's almost unrealistic for
us to expect that you guys would be as good
as it again this year. But with everything Cole has
been able to do for you, you have been that good.
And I think about the throw to Bryce this last week,
the deep one after the turnover. To go out there
(28:19):
and make a team pay for a turnover is huge.
Speaker 4 (28:21):
Yeah, And you could see how comfortable we were we
were going to run the ball and first down, you know,
try to convert. We missed, and then here we go.
Speaker 6 (28:27):
Right. You know.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
The scary part with that is that's a big time
throw at that time, because otherwise you're giving the ball
back to them true with about a minute and ten.
So that was a heck of a heck of a throw,
and then we executed taking it down, you know, to
thirty three. I wish we would have scored that touchdown
with about eighteen seconds.
Speaker 6 (28:43):
Left because then your chances of giving up points go
way down.
Speaker 5 (28:47):
Also, you know, Dan Larson, the offense has been so
effective on the first drive of the third quarter. For
the offense, whether they get it first or whether they're
just just their first drive, does that play into your
thinking with the coin toss of getting the ball to
start the second half being more important.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
That's probably one of the underlining I'm gonna give the
fans some real insight you're coming up, but that's probably
one of the underlining things. We've improved a lot compared
to last year. We're much better team coming out of
out of halftime than we were last year. And I
think we're just more in a rhythm. They're talking to
each other. It's funny. We were gonna take the ball
last week. You remember, I was kind of talking about
(29:20):
that because they were five for five on opening drives
and I ran out there right they won the toss
and took the ball. I ran out there and coached
Hill and I, you know, have a relationship, and I said,
you son up a gun and he said, I thought
you were gonna take it. So we we took the
ball and they were gonna try to establish some tempo.
So you kind of play that cat and mouse game.
Each and every week's a little bit different. I can
(29:42):
tell you this this week, it's imperative our defense. Two
weeks in a row, we've played way too many snaps
in the first half. Our defense needs to be a
bully and we need to go start a fight and
we better be playing with our hair on fire.
Speaker 6 (29:53):
The next guy in or the next guy up is
going to play.
Speaker 5 (29:55):
I know the first four ways. Think you're a fifty
three percent of drives. Defensively, we're three and outs.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Oh, we gotta get back. We've defended eighty four plays
the last two first halfs and we cannot get into
that game. We gotta go out there and we gotta
be opportunistic in critical situations and we gotta shut it
down on the first third and eight we get a
chance to.
Speaker 5 (30:13):
Well, you go. Our first half hour is in the books, folks.
Before we take a break, let's pause ten seconds for
station identification. You're listening to the Bison football radio show.

Cole Payton in the shot got Brika Penu to his left.
Cole calls for Bryce and Motion enhance the price on
a chest. We cuts it up here with a thirty
wheeling back inside of the thirty. There he goes a
crossbit bail, he might go all the way. That's sign
the twenty five the.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Ten touchdown right out of the gate, Bryce Lance seventy
five yards, Chad sweep touchdown, Mison and at Thesu grabs
a lead six to.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
Three year in the opening corner.
Speaker 5 (33:25):
Big time player right there out of the gate. On offense,
Bryce Lance with the touchdown. We are back here with
you live at the holiday and I don't know applause
for Bryce Lance, I mean first playoffense. That's pretty good
efficiency coach one play, seventy five yards touchdown even Cole
Payton lead in the way with some blocks too.
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Good game planning, good execution, and some unbelievable efforts I
mean the press without a without the perimeter blocking. You know,
the receivers working hard for each other. You know, that
just doesn't happen. And then Cole carrying out his fake,
he ends up in the back door because Bryce cut
back as the lead blocker. It would have been kind
of interesting to see both of those guys just sprinting
(34:05):
and racing.
Speaker 6 (34:06):
That would be fun to watch.
Speaker 5 (34:07):
I think we can line that up at some point
as well. That was that was fun to watch down
the field in the very first play a player like Bryce,
I mean to have that weapon. And I love Dan
Larson's getting the ball right in your playmaker's hands very
first play, giving him a chance. We were talking about
explosive plays last week, me and Coach Larson and saying, hey,
we can turn a two or three yard play into
a big play if we can just break one tackle.
We like our playmakers in space.
Speaker 4 (34:28):
Yeah, well, we talk a lot about making the ordinary extraordinary.
It starts with just catching the ball, throwing the ball
to a good spot, and then like if we can
break a tackle, all of a sudden, a five year
throw becomes an explosive. In those explosive plays, right when
you create one your chances of scoring a touchdown are
like sixty percent, and when you score, if you have
(34:49):
two in a drive, that goes like ninety obviously, but
those explosive plays are so critical for us, and we
have so many guys that can do it. We've never
been an offense that just says, this guy only needs
the ball. You know, we're very conceptual and so finding
a way to get Bryce and Rajah and Chris Harris, Jackson, Williams,
Makay Collins, you know those guys. Goes on right and
(35:12):
Reees Kessel's emerging man. I mean that vertical ball that
Reese caught was really impressive as well. Bryce is a
heck of a player. But the interesting thing is that
Bryce's legacy is gonna be how hard he works, how
much spirit he brings to practice, and then how sharp
and how good he is academically. He's gonna leave with
his NBA.
Speaker 5 (35:29):
I think one thing that's cool about him too, didn't
after an amazing season last year, didn't rest on Tho
Lauras at all. I know you've talked about his vertical
All the other athletic testing numbers continue to get better. Weekend,
we got a guy who's trying to max out the
capabilities of his body.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
Yeah, and it's interesting because Bryce never the environment when Bryce,
when Bryce walks into the environment, he adds to it.
He never complains about not getting the ball or or
hey I was open or whatever. He just kind of
does his job. He embraces his role, and you appreciate
guys like that when they're that talented. Now, on the
flip side of that, I love receivers that want the football,
(36:05):
that want to be impactful, and hopefully we can provide
some real opportunities for Bryce and those other guys.
Speaker 5 (36:11):
And I came against Southern Illinois and also against Illinois State.
One thing I was talking with Dan Larson about too,
is a lot of perimeter runs were seen. Now, you
still love running repey on the offensive line, but I
think he loves the matchup. I know he loves the
matchup of you guys, his receivers, blocking cornerbacks and safety
that's been up area. You've exploited quite a bit.
Speaker 4 (36:28):
Well. Bryce's sixty three and three quarters or six four,
two hundred and seven pounds. McKay is six three, two
hundred and ten pounds. Chris Harris, you know those are
big guys that are sometimes you know, those matchups are
just as favorable as bringing it. I never we never
want to be just an offense that becomes overly predictable.
I think we've done a good job of that in
the last two years. Right, Like, just because you put
(36:50):
two tight ends on the field doesn't mean you can't
line up in spread formations. Just because you have four
receivers on the field doesn't mean you can't run it
and take advantage of their blocking a bit. So I
think we got to continue to do a good job
maximizing our personnel and then maximizing our self scout and
making sure we're unpredictably predictable, you know, if.
Speaker 5 (37:10):
You want to talk about it too, predictably unpredictable, Yeah,
something like that. Definitely what's happening with that Byson offense
here so far, and on the defensive side, continuing to
hold people under twenty points. That was in a Southern
Illinois offense that came in, high scoring, high flying. I
think Da G. Williams is a heck of a quarterback
for them. They've got some good players on the perimeter
as well of receivers and running backs to hold them
(37:30):
under twenty points. I mean, I know that's your goal.
I think for a lot of fans out there, they
were thinking that's gonna be tough to do, and you
guys accomplished it.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
Yeah, well you knock them off course, and then you
start to change and dictate the game based on getting
a lead. Right now, you're not calling the plays as comfortable,
you're not working the game plan, you're having to go
tempo NonStop. I just thought we did a good job
again this week kind of weathering the storm, you know.
And then I just Buyson football is at its best
(37:56):
when we pick each other up and we have each
other's backs. Know, in the first half, the offense didn't
get much opportunity, but we talked about it at halftime.
I said, guys, on defense, if you get one more takeaway,
we're gonna we're gonna put this on the shoulders of
the offense. And they gladly raised their hand and said,
send me. We got this, coach. And so the complimentary
(38:16):
football is what makes us special.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
Yeah, definitely a special performance and us who gets the
win in that game over Southern Illinois forty five to
seventeen in that game as well, Keenan Wilson in the
backfield a couple of times. You've mentioned him already. How
about Toby and Ae with a fumble recovery right there,
Johnny on the spot to get that one, and all
overlucked with an interception late. That one created quite a
stir on the sidelines.
Speaker 4 (38:37):
Well, that's cool. They really support him. He's worked hard.
He's a walk on kid, you know, he's a local guy,
and he's improved so much, like just physically, you know,
he's become a former little guy. To get our defense
lined up to get him into the right you know,
play calls and so forth and so on. So that's
pretty cool to see a young man be able to
go out there and make a play for himself and
for the defense. The guy's rallied behind that.
Speaker 5 (38:59):
Yeah, big performance there in another top ten win for
NDSU at home, taken down the Selucas. Got one more
segment with it. Coach will take a break, we'll come

So we appreciate everybody supporting us.
Speaker 5 (43:27):
Just a heads up for all of Bison Nation two.
We'll have since talked about basketball season starting really tonight
with the exhibition for Bison men against the Minnesota By
the way, it's a ten to nine game right now.
NDSU men's basketball down just one, five minutes to go
in the first half. Bison basketball radio shows will also
be here at the Holiday Inn all year, so it'll
be doubling up here, which will be a lot of
fun as we get into the crossover season with football
(43:48):
and basketball going. I want to touch on this week's
opponent for you, guys, Indiana State. I'm just the opponent
for you going on the road out to Tara Hot.
I think got a really good running back in nick
O' show right now, second in the valley terms of
in valley play yards per game on the ground, over
one hundred and forty of them per game on the ground.
Speaker 4 (44:05):
Yeah, he can be a tough out. You know. The
one thing you appreciate about, you know, these guys, is
just that they're connected up front. They know where the
combinations are going. They play really well together upfront. Now,
I think athletically we got to try to change that narrative.
You know, we can't let them get double teamed. You know, up,
we got to find a way to beat some souls.
But he's a good running back. He's you know, he's
(44:27):
kind of a slashing type. You know, he's not necessarily
just a jitterbuger can beat you one way, and so
I appreciate guys that run hard. You know, they're averaging
one hundred and seventy nine yards rushing per game, and
they're definitely that's where it all starts for them because
if they can get the run game going, now they're
arepo systems really pretty good. You know, they find completions,
the hitches, free access throws to you know, guys that
(44:50):
are getting a little softer coverage because of the big boxes,
and so it'll be important that we make them one
dimensional early in the game.
Speaker 5 (44:56):
Yeah, number nine, Nick oh show six two two twenty,
big big body.
Speaker 6 (45:00):
That's what I mean.
Speaker 4 (45:00):
He's not like a jitterbug type guy. I mean, this
guy there we go.
Speaker 5 (45:03):
He's gonna be bringing him down a few times out there.
How about there? And Wilson, Logan, Larson, everybody, they're on
of ap ploset. Some great Bison d tackles just walked
in the building here at the holiday in also for
Indiana State, the quarterback position, they were going with one
guy for a couple of games, goes down with the collarbone,
had another guy step in there, he got hurt, played
three different quarterbacks. How much of a factor does that
playing in your guys's mind.
Speaker 4 (45:24):
Well, the defensive coaches would know a little bit better
than me of as far as okay, what is the
nuance if if one quarterback goes versus the other, We're
we're getting ready to play against number ten. And so
he's the guy that's played lately. You know, he's roughly
about fifty two or fifty three percent completion two hundred
and twenty five yards or so. He they're capable. It's
(45:47):
just when you start the heater with the idea of
one quarterback and you're and you're building a plan and
the next thing that gets, you know, a wrench gets
thrown in that.
Speaker 6 (45:55):
It's difficult.
Speaker 4 (45:55):
But I think it's more about us than it is
about them in this particular game. I really do believe
that the biggest thing that kind of has my attention
is their commitment to the run game. And then they
have some receivers that are that are more than capable,
and they spread the ball around pretty good, you know,
receivers one of those spots. Nowadays, it's I very rarely
talk about an offense that don't have good receivers. You know,
(46:18):
they do have some weapons out there, and it's just
a matter of can we take can we make them
one dimensional?
Speaker 5 (46:25):
Yeah, Rock riddle of the quarterback number ten for them
six two two oh five, red shirt freshman, younger kid,
you are in your third quarterback. Yeah, that can things
a little bit.
Speaker 4 (46:33):
Yeah, And so I hope Devin Kleiman and Grant continue to,
you know, confuse quarterbacks with good jobs, you know, doing
a good job in the back end of stemming. And
that's kind of important, right. Can we hold our looks?
Can we press these receivers to take away the easy
stuff and make this guy grind because he is younger
and he lacks experience.
Speaker 5 (46:51):
One more thing, I know we've kept you a little long.
Last one for you. Unfortunate part about last week was
Finn Dickens goes down with a little bit of an injury.
He's down. I know you want to touch on Finn
a little bit for sure, but also that means the
emergence of maybe a Reese Kessel you've touched on a
few times. Caden's Enzen tell us about the depth of
that tight end position.
Speaker 4 (47:05):
Well, I, if I'm Dan Larson, I'm excited about it,
and I mean that I'm not excited that Finn's down.
My heart breaks for Finn and his family. But Carson
Williams is fifty to fifty right now, whether he'll play
or not. But I always thought that was kind of
exciting as a coach. Let's let's see who the next
guys are, Like, can they get the job done? And
if they can't, they will have to change gears and
we'll have to play in some open sets and find
(47:28):
a way to move the ball. But I'm counting on
Cocat Truman, you know, Kessel zen Zen. They're gonna play
really well. And then we're gonna also take McClain miller,
who's back healthy. He can play some f We're gonna
take him on the trip as well.
Speaker 5 (47:41):
Okay, there you go.
Speaker 4 (47:42):
And you guys could be he could keep an eye out.
Maybe Keenan Wilson might get an opportunity in the goal
line because he had a deal with coach Larson.
Speaker 5 (47:50):
Okay, I've been talking a few de tackles and stuff,
and they're like, I want a chance. They all want
to play off I mean defensive play once play offense.
I' know O offensive players want to play defense.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
So I got one quick story. There's only been one
defensive kid that ever followed through. Christian Dudzig begged me
and begged me and begged me to be a returner.
And he ended up being a really good kick return
and punt return guy. And I gave in to him.
Speaker 5 (48:12):
Okay, and now he's with you guys on the side
of taking video and do it all. Yeah, he's doing
a great he is doing a great job. Well, coach,
thank you for the time this week. Ravaplause, timp Poulisek

Speaker 6 (51:46):
Yeah, thanks for having me this place. This is awesome,
what an environment, great fans out here.
Speaker 5 (51:51):
Second year doing it, We've started to get more and
more people each and every week that show up, and yeah,
great crowd here once again for the Bison football or
radio show into Indiana State Week. For those that don't
know Cody Morgan here with us, they've probably heard the
name Cody Morgan many times. You've been here before Ben
rejoined the Bison staff just this last kind of spring,
(52:11):
taking over the spot that was empty when Nick Gayser
decided to move on to the next step of his
life and his career. And you're back here in Fargo.
What's it been like just to beat back in Fargo,
North Dakota with NDSU.
Speaker 6 (52:21):
Yeah, it's been great. You know, obviously this is this
has been home for me and my family honestly for
six years prior, seventy to seven seasons prior and now
it was kind of an opportunity to come back home.
It's kind of what it's felt like. It's been awesome. Obviously,
it's the best fans, it's the best fan base, it's
the best place, I mean, the city of Fargo, West Fargo, Horus.
Now you got to include in.
Speaker 5 (52:41):
That it's unbelievable yet hasn't.
Speaker 6 (52:44):
Even two years removed, like just coming back. And my
wife is from kind of north of Kansas City area,
so we were down there, and we drove up in
the summer to kind of go house hunting and look around,
and I'm like, oh my gosh, look at where this begins.
Like it's crazy how far south everything's gone right now
with everything, but it's been unbelievable being back home, just
the camaraderie and coach policy put together a great staff,
(53:05):
a lot of guys I know obviously and had the
chance to work with before, but excited to be back
and really enjoying enjoying the ride.
Speaker 5 (53:11):
Those housing areas. They ain't slowing down either North side
to north Star starting to go north on that side.
But you're here twenty sixteen to twenty twenty two, a
couple of years there with Kent State, working in his
defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator, some other positions with Kent State.
Then you come back here to Fargo. Outside of coach
polisek what was the determining factor that pulled you back
in here to to Fargo.
Speaker 6 (53:32):
Well, you know, obviously he's a pretty big influence, as
you can imagine. You know, this this goes back. I
was telling some people the stories some people probably heard,
but he was my little league baseball coach when I was,
you know, nine years old. So if you can imagine
that guy trying to coach a group of nine year olds,
I mean, it was it was something. It was something.
Speaker 5 (53:50):
The reason it's not much hair, Yeah, well.
Speaker 6 (53:53):
Oh, I don't know if that's our fault or his fault.
I mean we were good, we were really we were
damn good at baseball. Now our team was dialed in.
We were competitive and had a lot of fun. But
so that guy was obviously coached me. That was a
big part of it. But also having a chance to
come back home. You know, I took a chance, had
the ability to go be a defensive coordinator, which is
kind of a goal of mine, something I wanted to do,
kind of check that box. And things didn't go great
(54:13):
there obviously, that and this opportunity open open back up
to come back home to a place that I know
is going to be growing. And I got a lot
of trust in that man, I really do, and this
guy's limit for where this program is gonna go, and
trust him as a leader to do what's going to
be best.
Speaker 5 (54:27):
For a good reason, they have trust in that man
back there, still mingling with the fans out here, just
can't get enough of it. For sure. I wanted to
dive into that story a little bit with the little
league stuff, because he's told it before. I want to
get it from your perspective as well. You were a
couple of years younger. Is that the case out there?
Speaker 6 (54:41):
Yes, Oh you're talking about in littly in little league?
Speaker 5 (54:44):
Yeah, wellttle league. He just spotted just hey, come in
here and play basically.
Speaker 4 (54:47):
Yeah, So I was.
Speaker 6 (54:49):
So I was nine years old and the team that
was actually was ten. They had to be ten year olds.
But my brother was four years older than me. So
my brother was playing on the team, and I was
always just show up because I had nothing to do
and I love baseball and I was hanging out and
the second baseman who was out there, I'm glad he's
not here, Josh Mellum his name was. But anyways, coach
poloseis hitting infield and second basement makes like five hours
(55:11):
in a row. So he loses his mind completely. He
sees this little kid with a red baseball cap hanging
outside the fence and me watching. He's like, hey, you
want to play. I'm like yeah. So I go out there,
you know, thinking like what's going to happen. I see
this guy wind up to hit this ball to me,
and I'm like, oh my gosh. It was like a
scene off a sandlot. Close your eyes and put your
glove up. Except he hits a grounder. So I just
(55:33):
kind of did this. I mean, he hits it as
hard as he can, and well, I guess and just
picked it up. All right, I got it, throw it
over the first and hey, the second basement of the
baseball team right now. So I got the job, and
obviously the rest was history from that. But then I
kept playing as a younger player and got a chance
to do all that. But there's a lot more stories.
I can go into a lot of detail. Oh I
got one more than I love to tell. All right,
(55:54):
So you guys, anybody in here play baseball? Reason end
you play baseball? Okay, So you know, like batting practice, right,
you line up in there. You know, they throw a
couple of pitches. You want you lay down a couple
of bunts, you know, lay down a couple of buns,
and then hey, you get to swing away. Well, anyways,
the game before this particular event that happened, we had
a bunch of kids in their little kids what do
they do. They back out of the box when the
(56:15):
ball comes in. They're afraid of getting hit. So coach
Polisch makes it as mission that Okay, we're gonna toughen
these boys up. So instead of laying down two bunts,
you had to wear two pitches before you could swing away.
Speaker 5 (56:28):
That sounds like a coach Paul Scroll Yep.
Speaker 6 (56:30):
That was. That was one part of it anyway. So
you can't say I'm not tough. I know I'm not saying,
but I'm for sure tough from my stories as a
nine year old trying to conquer a little league environment.
But it was fun. They didn't know any better. We
thought that was We thought that was normal. So I
told that story and people are like, oh my gosh,
your coach did what Okay.
Speaker 5 (56:48):
And then the next week next year, you're playing base,
playing toward your coach hit me with a couple I gotta.
Speaker 6 (56:52):
Get we gotta get tougher, right, you gotta keep the pushing.
Speaker 5 (56:55):
Definitely the toughest little league team in all of the state,
I have to think, maybe even all in the country
at that point. But yeah, the rest is issue. You
stayed obviously close with him throughout what kind of influence
has he been just in your coaching career stout to NDSU,
Ken Stateon and Nolbat.
Speaker 6 (57:08):
Yeah, he's He's helped me get every job, honestly I've
ever had, whether it's through some connection or another. But
it's amazing because him and I come from a town
of you know, eleven hundred people. It's a Iola and
Scandinavia combined, maybe twelve hundred and fifteen hundred people now.
But the influence he's had over that whole area, there's
not one person when you go back around central Wisconsin
(57:28):
doesn't know who coach Policy II is in some way,
shape or form. They've either gotten yelled at or chewed
out or something by the guy in some way, shape
or form. But he's helped me get every job. From
my first GA job when I was out at University
of Mary in Bismarck and I didn't know anything how
to coach. I didn't know what the he guy was doing.
But my first job I was coaching d line out there.
He helped me get that job and then staying in
(57:50):
touch with him, I always came back and worked this
camp that that awesome camp we have in the summer
where have all those kids and find all those players.
But I always worked at camp every stop I'd ever
been and maintained relationships. So then you marry to Stout
to NDSU, and then NDSU Decant and then obviously back.
He's been a part of it the whole time.
Speaker 5 (58:09):
Yep. Big influence in you, for sure, And same with
a lot of guys on the coaching staff right now
for ends you a great crew you guys got and
a great team that's playing really really well right now,
including your defensive tackles. Will dive into them here in
just a little bit. Break here with you, Cody Morgan,
defensive Tackles coach, Here with us. Will take a break
back with more of the Bison Football radio show on

On second down and ten at the forty one exaggerated
playfake by Peyton under pressure.
Speaker 1 (01:00:36):
Now he stepped up and runs to the forty thirty
five thirty in sign the number one twenty five to
twenty pery back by fifteen to ten. He's got the
agle pit sign the five Thairy goes touchdown. Fizon pul
put it on a show forty one yards to the
house touchdown at day we had tag good guys, four
(01:01:01):
fifty one to go in the third.
Speaker 5 (01:01:04):
And we are back here with you on the Benson
Football Radio show. Up at Rondo plaus or Cole Peyton touchdowns.
Everybody hole Peyton touchdowns didn't even either Hurtle. Somebody for
that when he just outran them all the way to
the corner. Big rushing touchdown there, Andyus, you go on
to win. It goes on to win last week forty
five seventeen over Southern Illinois. Big matchup with the Sycamores
of Indiana State coming up this Saturday out in Tara.
(01:01:27):
Hote want everyone to get out there and support the
Bison on the road. Noon kick on. I fear for
INYSU taking on the Sycamores trying to get to seven
and oh we're here with beieson defensive tackles. Coach Cody
Morgan with US asked us to coach Pete earlier, Can
you believe we're six games done, six games to go?
This is the halfway point you start the second half
of the regular season this week?
Speaker 6 (01:01:46):
No, he said that when you When I walked in
and he said that, I was like, man, it just
it doesn't even feel like that, like we did feel
like we've played six games or even won six games.
You know, as a coach, you just put your head
down and you work, and you work, and you work,
and Thursday you pick your head up and breathed for
a little bit and then road, on the road or
at home, your prep and then you play the game
and then starts all over. You know, it's Groundhog's Day.
(01:02:07):
But yeah, it's uh, it's flown by. It's going really
really fast, but that's what we wanted to do.
Speaker 5 (01:02:12):
Keep going the second half ago buying a blink too,
and I'm hopefully for some playoff games down the road
as well. I know he dove into yorkind of background
as a coach before. I want to go into your
background as DS with NDSU when you were here before,
you know, cornerbacks coach, safeties coach and a couple of
guys I thought you did coach here at NDSU and
now in the NFL. How about Josh Hayes have a
Argus Siegal now making impact with the Buccaneers and forty
(01:02:32):
nine ers respectfully, one of them as a corner one
of them has a safety a little bit. What's it
been like to watch those two former Bindsen's careers blossom.
Speaker 6 (01:02:39):
Yeah, it's it's funny because you look back at that
and you see like those guys, like even like Jayden
Price now who had a shot with the Saints. You know,
Dustin Telbird, who's you know, playing in the CFL right
now for the Hammile making a lot of place wants
and man's it seems like every time I turn something
on on Instagram, he's making a play or something like that.
But everybody probably remembers Destin and Talbert making that making
that one handed cat. Oh my gosh. I was up
(01:03:01):
in the booth at that time, and I'm surprised that
glass held up. I was banging on the glass. I
was just so excited for the guy. You know, he
made an unbelievable play. But yeah, you talk about Marque Siegel,
just to watch him grow up and you know when
he was just kind of a knucklehead, that's all. I
remember how young he was when I was coaching him
and watch him mature and oh yeah, he's playing in
the NFL and having a really good career and a
special career. It's crazy to think about that because as
(01:03:25):
a coach and as a recruiter, like, you know, the
guys are good players, but you never really, you don't
pick your head up until all was sudden, Oh man,
they're playing in the NFL for they're starting for the
forty nine ers.
Speaker 13 (01:03:34):
Now.
Speaker 6 (01:03:34):
I was like, wow, I can't believe that happened. You know,
you only remember all the little moments where you're coaching
and critique and all that stuff. But it's cool to
look back on and cool to kind of cherish those
those times with those guys.
Speaker 5 (01:03:43):
You see Marquis having a future that's safety when you
were coaching them in the future in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (01:03:47):
Wow, it's funny because I coached him when I was
coaching the corners, I recruited and be a corner. Yeah,
and then when I moved to Safety's and we hired
coach Walker, I always brought that up every single week.
I was like, hey, you know, Marquis could he could
slide over there and play strong for us? You know
that right? And so that had always been in the
works for a kid like that who was always big,
strong and physical. You know, those dB positions are a
(01:04:08):
little bit flexible, especially when you're talking about corner and safety,
like there's a lot of a lot of fluidity there
for sure.
Speaker 5 (01:04:14):
Obviously you've had some defensive line coaching experience as well,
but a lot of secondary So what was it like
coming back here and now coaching D tackles?
Speaker 6 (01:04:21):
Yeah, you know, it's it's just so funny. How different
everything is. You know, you're so first, you're you know,
I started off, I played the position, I played corner,
I played nickel in college. You know. Then you go
and you take your first job coaching D line. All
of a sudden, you're in a whole new world. It's like,
oh my gosh, what are we talking about? Pass rush moves?
And learning fronts and stunts and run fits, you know.
And then was able to kind of transition around while
(01:04:42):
shooting sixteen seventeen, I was coaching on the offensive side
with that guy. Yeah, so I learned offensive football over there.
But then to go and do the safety stuff. It's
just a different challenge with the with the D line
and specifically the D tackles, you know, whereas in the
back end you're way more schematics and run fits and where.
And then the defensive tackles you really focusing on, Okay,
(01:05:02):
what is their guard, their center and their guard and
what do they do every play? And you're honed into
that their their keys and reads and what they're looking
at and can we get any tells on their stances?
What run plays do they run? I Mean, there's so
much just detail in that, but it's so small schematically,
it's just a little bit different from that where a
safety's got to know all these ten different coverages. For us,
(01:05:24):
we all overfront, okay, we know how to get lined
up and play, but now it's all those keys and reads,
and you know, as a safety you can get away
with having your first two steps can be awful, right,
and that doesn't impact the play well as ad tackle.
If your first step is you know, six inches this
way and they're running that way like, it's catastrophic to
the play. And so it's just been a unique different
challenge for that. But in a good way. I've been
(01:05:45):
I've been great. I've had two guys here tonight that
are great to obviously coach and be around a lot.
They're a ton of fun and our room is a
lot of fun, and it's been good for them to
bring me up to speed and me kind of have
my own, you know, influence on the room. But it's
been a lot of fun for sure.
Speaker 5 (01:05:58):
Yeah, in the trenches it's kind of football in a
film with men. Yes, it's close quarters there and if
you make one bad step it can cost you. Guys
a lot. You mentioned two guys who were here. What
have him on in just a little bit. Keenan Wilson,
Logan Larson gonna be joining us. Let's go one at
a time here with him. About Keenan Wilson, just a
guy who you know, they look at last year he
had the most starts. They're gone, you'd some other guys
who were gone off the rush and now as well,
(01:06:18):
and with like need someone to step up here, I've
heard about Keenan Wilson. Can he do it on a
consistent play in playout, game and game out basis? And
so far? Answer yes resoundingly. How would he liked his play?
Speaker 6 (01:06:28):
So sure? He's he's been doing an unbelievable job for sure.
And you know, it was interesting when when I first
got you know, told I got the job with Coach Polisek.
He was like, all right, you know, there's you got
a really good group, like and hats off to coach
Gaser did an unbelievable job here and recruiting these guys
and developing these guys and getting these guys to this point.
The other thing that Coach p told me was you
got to watch out for this Keenan Wilson. He's on
(01:06:49):
a mission. He's just he's working different. And I would
say that when I first got here and I arrived,
I saw that he had that different look in his eye,
the way he went about his business, like you could
see he was on a mission to prove something. And
we don't know exactly what that is. Only he does
what he's looking to prove. But yeah, you know, guys left,
but what's new? I mean, all the fans here can
probably attest to that. Okay, guys leave, they come, they go,
(01:07:12):
and then all of a sudden, guess what the next
man up mentality? And they go in there and Keenan's
just the next success story in that. And he's done
an unbelievable job with that for sure.
Speaker 5 (01:07:19):
With the huge play the forced fumble against Southern Illinois
this last week, he's able to get his hands on
all coaching.
Speaker 6 (01:07:28):
You know, if Keenan wouldn't have made that play, if
it wasn't up to me, you know, not in the front.
It was an unbelievable play. You know, we talk about
the stunt and the footwork in the movement, but we
won't talk about finishing like he does, you know, and
that was you know, who knows what happens if he
doesn't make me play. Like you know, we were up
here talking before about the middle eight and how critical
that is. But you know that middle eight doesn't get
(01:07:48):
started without that force fumble, that great recovery by Toby,
which you know that catapults us into unbelievable momentum score
score again. And now okay, we're like, all right, we're
putting the slokies away now in a hurry. But yeah,
what a And it went.
Speaker 5 (01:08:00):
From being potentially down at half to us and you're
up seven. Then you're up fourteen out of the half
because you get the ball to start half number two
in quarter number three. And Logan Larson as well as
a guy who's continued to make plays I believe got
a half sack last week. Him and Keenan kind of
combined on one as well. I continues, You guys running
a lot of games up there up front. It looks
like in both of those guys, especially Logan's a beneficiarrea
(01:08:21):
of that.
Speaker 6 (01:08:21):
Yeah, Logan's done. Logan's done a great job too. Would
talk about a guy that practices unbelievably hard, like if
he would show up at practice and watch how he practices,
you'd be afraid of that. Guy for sure, just how
hard he plays. But yeah, he's done. He's done a
great job every week, just improving a little bit, improving
a little bit, improving a little bit, you know. And
last week was finding the culmination of that where he
saw him get a chance to make a play. But
(01:08:42):
if anybody's got any pictures of that, so we've been
talking in the D tackle room, Logan Keenan, You'll remember
we've been talking, right, if anybody's got any good pictures
of that, we wanted to. I want a huge picture
of that, you know, two D tackles making a sack. Right,
that was kind of the end all, be all go
I meet at the quarterback, right, So any fans out
there that I have that picture, we want that we got,
get that blown up so we can put it down
a room. We can celebrate that because that was a
(01:09:03):
big deal play by those.
Speaker 5 (01:09:05):
Two Epito me of internal pastors right there.
Speaker 2 (01:09:07):
Right.
Speaker 6 (01:09:07):
If you can get two guys that make the play,
that's better than just one guy, right, So we'll take that.
Speaker 5 (01:09:11):
He's the tackle forcing the gut to step out and
get back with a defensive end. Now we're gonna get
the sack ourselves right here, exactly finish the job. I
love that aspect of it. I'd be remiss without talking
with you about you know, you're coming into a new
spot here at the d Tackles, You're coming back to NDSU.
You know, he's kind of getting close to it to
the season. It's got to be such a ease for
you to come back into a room that has a
(01:09:31):
veteran presence into like Jackson Duton have for a guy.
I mean, the guy's married, he's been playing college football
for he's like forever, and when I talked to him
in one on one, just one of the most just
calm presences you've ever had. Obviously a monster on the
football field, but to come into a room that had
a veteran presence like Jackson and a guy from this
state that had to help.
Speaker 6 (01:09:50):
Yeah, Jackson. Jackson is mature beyond his years. If you
have a conversation with him, like sometimes I look at
him and I'm like, man, what did you just say?
Like what what what we're did you just he was
like the details Those guys, those guys in the back
were making fun of him, like I don't think we
have anywhere close to your vocabulary.
Speaker 5 (01:10:07):
Man, Calendar I'm kind of convinced.
Speaker 6 (01:10:09):
But yeah, Jackson. Jackson's been unbelievable from the you know,
it was great for me honestly coming back because I
was a part of Jackson's recruiting process. Okay, so you
might remember during COVID like we couldn't go on the
road and recruiter any and stuff, but Jackson was one
of those first commits in that COVID recruiting class. Well,
we weren't doing anything, so we had these zoom calls
(01:10:30):
lined up and guys, remember Coach Broun, but Coach Brown
was pretty adamant about this, but we had a zoom
call with these guys. I was on zoom with Jackson, dude,
never like probably fifty times, just talking about whatever, just
trying to keep them committed because we're like, we can't
lose this guy. He's the glue to the class. So
I knew him pretty well, had a good relationship. So
coming back now, he's been an unbelievable help to me,
like catching me up to speed. You know. Obviously I
(01:10:52):
had a great familiarity with the defense and knew what
the words were and where they were. But just okay, Jackson,
how do you see this and how should we really
be talking about this from their perspective. He's He's allowed
me to be a way better coach, and I've learned
as much from him as he has from me, like
just in terms of that relationship. But having him has
been invaluable, and I wish we could have him for
ten more years. I would take that guy at ten
(01:11:13):
out of ten times he's been he's been that good for.
Speaker 5 (01:11:15):
This kind of like Logan Cop. We were just talking
about Logan Cop earlier in the show about scot again
you look in numbers are ridiculous and doesnt feel like
he's we talked about him enough somehow. Same thing with
Jackson is like you just don't talk about him and
all of a sudden he goes out and just does
his job to a te.
Speaker 6 (01:11:28):
Quiet, quietly productive player, like doesn't make a tunnel. Like
all of a sudden there's a couple of splash plays
with a sack and a TfL that show up. But yeah,
he's just uh, he's exactly. He's the pity of me
of what Logan Cop is just guys that do their
job danging in a day out play after play after play,
and then you look up there and the guy had
three or four tackles in a game and for a
d tackle like three or four tackles, it's a hell
(01:11:50):
of a game. Like it's a really good, really productive day.
But yeah, he's uh, he's been invaluable to us and
continues to do a great job. And he's the bell call,
he's the leader of that room. So I come down there.
You know, meetings don't start and tell you know whatever,
three three point thirty given day, I'll go walk down
are two o'clock and all these guys are in there,
and Jackson's up there and they're watching tape and they're
(01:12:10):
watching film. They're watching film for an hour and a
half together, like and then they're watching film on their own.
I like, you can't you can't emulate that. Other places
people would die to have that as a coach, and
we have that in a room all the time. And
Jackson started that tradition and kind of kept that going
as I've gotten here, and it's been really really good.
Speaker 5 (01:12:27):
At jackson Io. I believe had the big sack against
STCU in the semi final last year. So he does
slashes on pretty big meetingful and black ful plays as well.
And I like to do something fun for the folks
to show up here to the holiday and to take
in this show as well. Give them a little bit
of a glimpse of behind the scenes or just something
that's a little bit unique. I'm gonna give them a
name to know for now and also one that's gonna
make a huge impact for the future. In your room.
(01:12:48):
Elijah Wayne. Okay, this guy, I'm time fifty four freshman, Omaha, Nebraska.
The guy has made a huge breakthrough already the Red Trip,
believe taking off of them. I mean, this guy's gonna
be a problem going forward.
Speaker 6 (01:13:00):
Yeah, Elijah Wayne is big. So his nickname is Bruce.
So we call him Bruce because of Bruce Wayne. Yes,
so his nickname is Bruce. I don't know why that
came up, but it did. Anyways, Like that's just what
we call it, what we call him. But Bruce has
been He's done a really good job. He's another kid
that's very unassuming. When you're talking to him, you wouldn't
really know, but looks like a gentle giant, but a
(01:13:22):
monster out there. He's done a good job of maturing
and really really growing in our system and doing the
things that we've been asking him to do. He does
not make mistakes in terms of mental He knows where
he's supposed to be, which is really impressive for a freshman.
For a true freshman to come in here and make
an impact and play it's really, really, really hard. You
have to be mature, you got to study the playbook,
(01:13:42):
you got to put in the time. But he does
not make mental mistakes very often. So that's pretty impressive
for that kid. And he's got a bright future. I mean,
he's crazy good grades out of high school. He's done
unbelievable in the classroom, like he's very humble, he's hungry,
he always wants he's got that coach me coach attitude works.
And then those guys in the back of the room
do a great job of hold him an accountable and
(01:14:03):
just keeping him pushing into what the standard has been.
And yeah, this guy's gonna be a limit for Bruce.
We're excited about him.
Speaker 5 (01:14:08):
Have some good Byson of on Nebraska. He could be
one of the next ones as well. This is why
you're a football coach, and I'm not, he said Bruce,
And I thought of the shark from finding her Bruce
Wayne Bruce Wayne as well of course then.
Speaker 6 (01:14:20):
But then so they called the tackles, called me the
Riddler because I would ask those guys all these questions,
like I'm asking him questions. So they got to know
stuff and they got to react quick. Well, Bruce got
one wrong. They were like, oh the Riddler got you,
and oh my god, this is a beating too big.
Then they were talking about making a sign calling our
meaning room Arkham Asylum, and I'm like, all right, I'm
a drama line here. Okay, we're not gonna go down.
Speaker 5 (01:14:42):
That, right Marvel. Yeah, we're getting in their comic books.
Speaker 6 (01:14:45):
There you go.
Speaker 5 (01:14:46):

(01:18:44):
and Logan Larson. Everybody joining us here at the holiday
and buys some football radio show gentlemen, appreciate the time,
Thanks for joining us here tonight, Thank you for having us.
Happy to be here with you guys as well. We
just had Cody Morgan on coming back here to NDSU
coaching the d tackles. What's it like to be a
coach by co Morgs this year?
Speaker 37 (01:19:01):
Man, he's a funny guy, you know, always bringing joy,
always bringing energy to every single practice. You know, he's
pushing me in Logan Duty, uh, every everyone in the
DETAC room to their best ability.
Speaker 12 (01:19:12):
So yeah, when I heard Coach Morgan was coming back,
I was really excited. First thing when he got here,
he brought a ton of energy. Uh saw that you
know throughout Fall Camp especially Uh bringing the energy to
some one of the most important things that I think
he brings to our room.
Speaker 6 (01:19:26):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (01:19:26):
You know, playing defensive tackles, a big physicality can get
to us a little bit. So when he you know,
brings us up and you know, brings us along and
it's a big push for us.
Speaker 5 (01:19:36):
He's just telling us the Riddler. We're going with the
Riddler form, Yeah, a little bit. Tell us how that
came to be.
Speaker 37 (01:19:43):
You know, we were just joking around with Dan fall Camp,
I thinking, you know, Elijah Wayne, we call him Bruce,
Bruce Wayne Batman, and just he kept asking Bruce a
bunch of questions and I me and Logan were like,
you know, he's a riddler.
Speaker 6 (01:19:53):
So God just stuck and just went from there.
Speaker 5 (01:19:56):
So do for the characters that anybody a joker anything.
Robby Duty is Oscar the Groage sometimes okay, get the Crouch.
That's not quite the same universe there, but it's still
something out there as well. I love the the fun
you guys have in that room, and it's paying off
on the field. You can tell you guys are playing
with some fun right now? Is tell us how you
(01:20:17):
guys are feeling at this point of the season six
and oh.
Speaker 6 (01:20:19):
Man, you know it's good.
Speaker 37 (01:20:20):
You know, just trying to go one and know each
week compete proved tough.
Speaker 6 (01:20:23):
That's what we do.
Speaker 37 (01:20:25):
Just try not be the best detail group in the country.
That's what we strive. That's what we try to do,
be the most physical unit in the country.
Speaker 6 (01:20:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:20:31):
Yeah, it's been great this year with a lot of
opportunity opening up in that defensive tackle room, I think,
you know, going out there and taking advantage of the opportunities.
I think we've done a great job of that and
we're playing together really well as a team, and we
gotta keep it going.
Speaker 5 (01:20:42):
Logan, you just mentioned, I think a key word for
your guys this group was opportunity going into this year.
Obviously the most starts were on for I think they're
around for a decade. It seemed like after a leave
bit longer for you guys being their teammates. But great
players and just because graduation the natural you know way
college football goes is they go on and they graduate
next up their lives. Some other players you know in
the in and out of that position group and opportunity
(01:21:05):
resides there for you guys. What was that like in
the spring ball Here in fall camp and as the
season has gone on, to try and seize that opportunity.
Speaker 37 (01:21:11):
You know, especially for me Logan, you know, just taking
like you said, taking advantge of the opportunity, you know,
pushing ourselves, you know, or the patterns lifting, just pushing yourself,
trying to be that next guy up and be the
next man.
Speaker 12 (01:21:22):
So yeah, I would see this not letting your teammates
down as the opportunity opens. You know, we're out here
working hard every single day, and you know your teammates
are by your side as well, So not letting them
down is one of the biggest reasons of why you
push so hard.
Speaker 5 (01:21:34):
I think you both have taken advantage of the opportunity
to the fullest here so far. Will take one break
quick segment there, will take a break, come back, wrap
up the show for you guys. Next year, buy some
football radio show live from the holiday inn.

Thank You're with you. One last segment on the Bisen
Football Coaches Show is we get ready for NDSU against
Indiana State here this week taking on the sycamores out
in tear, joined by Keenan Wilson and Logan Larsen. Here
just a couple of minutes left, guys, we had obviously
coach Paul sek on earlier. Logan, he told us a
big entrepreneur, Purnewer, that you are a little bit got
(01:25:11):
some businesses going on the side here.
Speaker 12 (01:25:13):
Yeah, that's right, yep, ye as we're stuck here in
the summertime, you know, doing workouts, do a window washing company,
and it gets opportunity to the guys to go out
there and get a job and save up money for
you know, food and shelter. So what coach camera says,
you need food and shelter in the summer, that's all
you need. And then roll hurt as a new type
of buys and clothing dropping here in about a week
(01:25:35):
and a half. Keenan's got it on. I also got
it on. A bunch of the college students really really
like it. Something new, something different than the typical ND
two things you find in the bookstore. So it'll be
out released without a week and a half. A week
and a half and you guys can shop there.
Speaker 5 (01:25:49):
Roll herd there you go. How about that is making clothing,
washing windows, food, shelter, and creamer. That's all. That's the
three pillars of a Bison football player right there. Keenan,
would you what company would you owe up if you
could open up a company.
Speaker 37 (01:26:02):
Ah, I mean I'd have to have him as my
business for a smart guy, but yeah, I think something
probably merchandise too.
Speaker 5 (01:26:08):
Merchandise, Ye, absolutely. I want to ask you guys one
quick question about Indiana State. When you guys slipped on
the tape of the Sycamores throughout the week, what has
stood out to you.
Speaker 37 (01:26:17):
I think they're skilled, skill positions, really good. I think, uh,
we gotta we gotta get home up front. You know,
we gotta attack this online and just stop the run
one under.
Speaker 6 (01:26:26):
And I think we gotta affect this QB too.
Speaker 12 (01:26:28):
So yeah, I think they'll throw enough things at you
to keep you on your toes. Uh, we're gonna go
out there and play a really physical game and uh,
we're gonna're gonna get him our best shot and go
one to know on the week.
Speaker 5 (01:26:37):
Yeah six nick O'shay, they're running back, bigger back. One
of the challenges of playing a guy comes downhill leading
the or second in the Valley in terms of rushing
yards per game right now over one hundred and forty
in Valley play.
Speaker 37 (01:26:49):
Yeah, I mean, you gotta run through your tackles, bring
your backshead arm. Like coach Morgan always likes to say,
you just gotta be physical, you know, like Leman said,
you gotta lead to country physicality.
Speaker 5 (01:26:57):
So I'm looking forward to seeing how you guys slow
down that running game of an Indiana State here this week.
One other, I guess I don't know if I call
the challenge for one thing that stands out to all
of us fans when in Indiana States on the schedule
is and you go to their place one of those
kind of bring your own energy type of games a
little bit, and how do you what the challenge there
up on the sidelines making sure you guys are bringing
the energy and you guys are hyped up, just hoot
(01:27:17):
and all.
Speaker 37 (01:27:17):
And you know you're gonna see me and Logan getting
hyped up one hundred percent for everyone who plays, but
he's making a play, even if it's a tackle. Just
bring a juice, biz and Nice is gonna help us
out to being there and just being supportive.
Speaker 12 (01:27:27):
So yeah, I think a lot of the guys don't
need excitement to play football. I think we bring it along,
you know, throughout practice every single day and I go
into another game is gonna.
Speaker 6 (01:27:35):
Bring just as much as excitement.
Speaker 5 (01:27:37):
You just won't hear as many fans. Yeah, it's another
opportunity to play buys in football, right, and you take
advantage of each one of those. You can put the
green and the gold on. That's one hundred percent true.
And then Elijah Wayne, obviously you're a really good player.
Just quick second on one of those on Elijah Wayne
from you.
Speaker 37 (01:27:51):
Yeah, man, love that dude works really hard. You know
he's gonna be one heck of a player when he
grows up. You know, just gotta say on high level
physical and just doing a job, and he's a great player.
Speaker 5 (01:28:02):
