This is one that NDSU has.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Had circled on the calendar ever since the schedule came
out at the end of the summer. Bison hosting Southern Illinois.
It's a third time in as many years as these
two teams have met. The first two were on the
road in Carbondale. This one at home here at Fargo,
and a big opportunity for the Bison to take down
a quality mid major opponent and find out a lot

more about this Bison group as they go up against
a really good test.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
Yeah, it's always exciting to see, you know, a good
opponent come into the Shack Misery Valley is a great
basketball conference, and uh, you know, I really just hope
that the fans are excited for it too, because you know,
it's tough to schedule good home games in Fargo, and
I think that people kind of struggle to understand that.
You know, they don't get to see the ins and
outs of what goes into scheduling. But it's tough to

get teams to come here. And it's because of you know,
the prior success that Indias has had. Teams don't want
to come all the way to Fargo and lose, and
so to get good opponents to come in here. You know,
it kind of takes the We'll play two games on
the road at your place and then we'll come to
Fargo for one.

I don't know if that's the contract.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
I'm just speculating, but overall, you know, it's it's fun
to have good games here. This is such a high
level of basketball, and so I hope people from Fargo
are coming out to enjoy this.

It's two for one, indeed, and it takes two to
ten ago.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, Bizon getting the sulukis here at home after the
last two in Carbondale. Ndesh's been at home for two weeks.
You hugely don't see this in the month of November
for North Dakota State met's basketball, but here we are
last week two games in a row at home. Tuesday
night against cal State Northridge, big second half propelled the
Bison to the victory. They win it ninety to sixty

eight over the matted and they outscored them sixty to
thirty five in half number two. Then on Wednesday night
beat Saint scholastica Division three team one eleven to thirty eight.
Got everybody some minutes. Everybody was in on the party
by the end. So Bison have won two in a row.
They're feeling good, and now they go up against the
Southern Illinois squad.

What to learn about in the group last week deckch and.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
The two victories for the Bison.

Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yeah, you know, I think the biggest thing coming up
for NBSU coming out of last week is, you know,
those last three halves to basketball, got to see the.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
Ball go through the hoop a little bit.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
You look at the early shooting struggles to start the season,
really struggling to kind of get hot and flow on offense.
I think the last three hals we've seen from this
INNDISU team are a good indicator that there are some
guys on this roster that can shoot the ball. Hopefully
they continue to stay comfortable with that and defensively keep
that intensity up.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
They've been really doing a good.

Speaker 4 (03:50):
Job getting teams sped up, forcing some turnovers and getting
out and getting some easy ones to transition on the
other end. Yeah, it's remarkable partnered eighteen turnovers fors per
game the Bison so far this season, NDSU has forty
steals in its first four games. For some context, last season,
the Bison had one hundred and seventeen steals in thirty

two games, so they're basically already a quarter of the
way done with last year's production in just four games
compared to a full season where we've seen this defense
get deflections, and they'll try and do that against a
really athletic and Southern Illinois team that wants to go
and push the tempo offensively. Yeah, it's gonna be a
good test for NDSU's defense in the sense that you know,

this is obviously a higher level opponent.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Southern Illinois.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
They got some long athletes out here, some big guys
del Mo, So it's gonna be kind of a more
apples to the apples matchup to see what you can
do with that defense.

Speaker 1 (04:46):
No doubt about it. The Bison already back in the
locker room after getting their initial warm up shots up. Meanwhile,
Southern Illinois they're warming up in front of us to
our right. Here's your scouting report on the sulukis. They
are out of the Missouri Valley Conference, one of the
best mid major conferences in the country for college basketball.
They check in with a two to one record. They

won against a non division ie McKendree on opening night,
then they beat Kansas City another Summit League team one
oh one to seventy eight a week and a half ago.
Last Wednesday, they went out to Nevada and took the
wolf Pack to overtime. However, they would lose eighty six
to eighty one in the extra period. They had the
lead late, but then Nevada hit a three pointer at

the end of regulation to send the game to ot
Seluki's missed some free throws down the stretch and then
allowed Nevada to take the victory. This is year two
for Southern Illinois under Scott Nagy, who used to be
South Dakota State's head coach for a long time. He
was in Brookings for twenty one years from nineteen ninety
five to twenty sixteen, so you played against his jack

Rabbit teams Dexter. He was at Wright State for eight years,
then they hired him at Southern Illinois last season after
moving on from program along Brian Bullens. After five years,
they went fourteen and nineteen. A year ago. Top two
scorers transferred now Ali Dibo, who averaged seventeen a game.
He went to Texas A and M, and then Canard Davis,
who averaged sixteen points per game. He transferred to BYU,

So they've only got six returners on this team. Their
leading guy is Kelron House, their point guard at five
eleven nineteen points per game so far this year, they're
starting to figure out their roster as they had a
lot of turnover from last season in their first year
with coach Naggy.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Yeah, you know, that's kind of one of those things
where really the same as what you see in the
Summer League, just kind of at a higher level. But
you know, it's hard to compare teams coming in and
look at, Okay, what did this team do last year,
because there's so many new faces. But you know, obviously
I played against coach Naggy, great coach for a number
of years, and he always puts together some hardos basketball teams,

you know. And we got my guy Will Viisley out there,
who was a coach here in my senior year.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
One of the best guys I know.

Speaker 4 (06:56):
And I know you're in Indiana, guy Sam, right, you
know who the winning is played and Butler history.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Is that would be one Will Beasley. It is Will Beasley.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
And so you know heard, I've heard that there's been
some speculation coming into the wins total we're gonna be
looking into a little bit. Maybe some games are getting
double counted, but I gotta give my guys some love
of just giving him some grief on that. Happy to
see will Beasily back in Fargo, put in some great
work here and happy to have him back to town.

part of four years here with Bison basketball and two
NCAA tournament teams the back to back seasons in twenty

coach Dave Richmond as we get ready for this one. Coach,
great to see you was fired up when you had
the video out over the weekend to get everybody right
a role.

It's about being uncomfortable and man, I just I hate
things about.

Speaker 10 (11:26):
Myself, Sam, but I also understand.

The role head coach and the many many titles and obligations.
So like, I'm just how do I say and I
want to say this right not frustrating is not the word,
but just you know, how do we continue to build
an atmosphere? How do we and once we have people here,
engage them and we need to get them here and
then do some things.

Speaker 10 (11:47):
But we have a great product. I'm very convicted of that.

Speaker 11 (11:51):
We have the right guys, a blue collar, Fargo like
workman like mentality and excited to build. And tonight is
a trendous opportunity to do those things, hopefully in front
of a decent size crowd.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
Yeah, it should be an awesome college basketball game and
DSU Southern Illinois we've seen it the last couple of
years and now we get to have it here in
our house. What type of opportunity is it for your squad?

Speaker 11 (12:10):
You know, it's a great opportunity and one that you know, win, lose,
draw is not going to define us. But college basketball
is hard, Scheduling is hard, and to get these opportunities
against the quote unquote a league that's above us, we
have to get creative.

Speaker 10 (12:26):
And you know, we did a two.

Speaker 11 (12:27):
For one and so we've been in Carbondale the last
couple of years and the back end of that.

Speaker 10 (12:31):
Two for one is. You know, they're here, and it's.

Speaker 11 (12:34):
An opportunity for us to grow and compete against one
of us, maybe not the best team, you know, according
to like analytics and Ken Palm and all those things
left our on our schedule, and so.

Speaker 10 (12:45):
I'm really really excited.

Speaker 11 (12:47):
I have a lot of respect for their staff of
Coach Agains Scott Nagy.

Speaker 10 (12:51):
For a million years.

Speaker 11 (12:52):
It feels like Will Beasley is near and near and
dear to us.

Speaker 10 (12:56):
You know, he was, he was part of our staffs.

Speaker 11 (12:57):
He was part of back to back NCAA tournament team staffs,
and so they do things the right way.

Speaker 10 (13:03):
They're not gonna trick you.

Speaker 11 (13:03):
They're gonna play hard, they're gonna play fast, they're gonna
play physical. A brand of basketball that I really appreciate,
A brand of basketball that allows us an opportunity to
be challenged here tonight.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
Yeah, coach, and I definitely wanted to ask you about
those two coaching relationships before we dig into the matchup.
Coach Vesley being here for four years as you alluded to,
and coach Nagy, who was at STSU for a long time.
It was like a throwback last year when we played
them over in Carbondale.

Speaker 11 (13:27):
Yeah, just again, I think it is Scott being the
head coach and hiring a guy like Will Veasley that
sums it all up, if that makes sense, Meaning like
Scott's a great guy. He's been there, he's done it,
he's done He's done things the right way. He's had
success at multiple spots, you know, doing things the right way.
I know he's an Illinois guy, you know, for for
him to be back in Illinois and at a place

(13:49):
that's basketball is extremely important in Carbondale. I think it's
a good fit. And Will Veasley is just a tremendous
human being. I've always been a fan of, you know,
Brad Stein in the Butler way, and that's how we
you know, we got attracted to Will and he came
in here and was everything we thought and more and
really developed as a as a coach here, in my opinion,

(14:10):
was an unbelievable player development guy, did a great job scouting,
did some recruiting. Happy for him and Emily and their
family that they're with a good guy and doing those things.
That being said, dropped the gloves here for forty minutes
to nights.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
No doubt, coach.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
We had two games last week good win against Seasun
and then took care of business Wednesday against Saint Scholastica,
had a few days here to practice and settle in
at home. What have you seen from the group since?

Speaker 11 (14:36):
Yeah, I think we're we're starting to fall into some
rhythms in how we prepare for games.

Speaker 10 (14:40):
You know, how we.

Speaker 11 (14:43):
Take some days off here and there, and what is
important on an off day. How that off day looks
for you might be looks different for how it looks
for me.

Speaker 10 (14:52):
And you know, the.

Speaker 11 (14:54):
The challenging coaching is just to do things consistently and
it's not necessarily a challenge for our staff, but it's
a challenge for the guys to understand that there isn't
something wacky or if something doesn't work for a little window,
you don't go and flip and change things. You gotta
stay consistent. You gotta build habits. And you know, we've
we've talked to our group again. I mean, this is
another another week where it sets up like I like

(15:15):
it a lot, because it's gonna test us with good teams,
it's gonna test our you know, our mental endurance to respond.
Where you're gonna play Monday Wednesday, you know, very similar
to the Thursday Saturday conference schedules, and so again, the
non conference is about preparing ourselves against tremendous challenges like tonight,
hopefully in front of an electric atmosphere, for ultimately what

(15:36):
comes in late December, January, February, March.

Speaker 1 (15:39):
Carson Smith really good on Wednesday. Seventeen points in sixteen minutes.

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Coach.

Speaker 11 (15:44):
Yeah, and again, you can say what you want about
the opponent or whatever, but Carson went out and did
those things and not at all surprised. And I mean
that and that is a complete credit to Carson. He
is the ultimate young man. He is the ultimate joy
to be around. His daily approach to no bad days,
his daily approach to get better, his work ethic, it's

(16:07):
everything you want to be around, you know. He obviously
comes from a college basketball family. His parents did a
tremendous shop and I think that really is as we
get into college coaching and you get eighteen to twenty
three year.

Speaker 10 (16:20):
Olds, a lot of who they are is shaped, you know,
by their upbringing.

Speaker 11 (16:24):
And you can see him with just a tremendous approach
to life, a tremendous approach to.

Speaker 10 (16:29):
The games and just get better.

Speaker 11 (16:30):
You know, and to bring a joy to it, and
he works so hard at his shooting. His body has
really changed. He's starting to grasp some things defensively. You know,
Carson's never going to blow you away or just be
an elite athlete that those things aren't going to change.
But he's going to continue to get better and better
and as a basketball player as he settles in to
that role and being consistent with.

Speaker 1 (16:52):
That thirteen offensive rebounds per game so far on our
first four Coach, how do you see that playing a
factor tonight?

Speaker 10 (17:00):
There's some good and there's some bad to that, right, Sam.

Speaker 11 (17:02):
We're both laughing off air here or you know, behind
the mic, meaning like we're missing some shots, right, so
that allows for some opportunities.

Speaker 10 (17:09):
But credit our guys.

Speaker 11 (17:11):
You know we talk about you know, as soon as
the shot is released, our defense starts, and our defense
starts with you know how what we would determine conversion level.

Speaker 10 (17:20):
You're the shooter, You're you're knowing in your mind that thing.

Speaker 11 (17:22):
Is going in the other four of us are are
anticipating a miss and and my role then becomes different.
Do I am I going to the glass relentlessly with
a motor and effort or am I getting back to
kind of set our defense a little bit? And you know,
you go back to a Carson Smith, a Trace and
Anderson Travion Carson. Those guys are doing a great, great
job on the glass and really proud of them. And

(17:43):
you know, I think there's more to a to a
Marquis Strickland too, where he can go out and get
a few more of those opportunities. But like I said,
I'm proud of that. That's an effort thing. I love effort.
As you know that being said too, I think we're
taking some good looks. I think we're getting into more
consistent roles and so hopefully some more of those shots
will fall as well.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
Southern Illinois two and one, they took Nevada down to
the wire, lost on the road in overtime on Wednesday.
What's the scouting report on the Slukies.

Speaker 11 (18:11):
Well, again, I think the scouting report is, you know,
very typical Scott Nakey teams and maybe a little bit
more athletic, you know than they were at Wright State
or South Dakota State.

Speaker 10 (18:22):
But a team that plays extremely fast.

Speaker 11 (18:24):
You watch made or missed that ball and made basket,
It's out of the net, it's out of bounce and gone.
So we have to be great at converting being a
great rebounding team. You know, it's going to be vitally important.
The other thing too, just to keep your eye on,
is they do a very good job on their baseline
under out of bounds and they find and look for
mismatches and keep it really simple and try to attack

(18:45):
you that way too. So I don't know. I love
these opportunities, Sam, absolutely love it. There's going to be
many challenges, but that's how you grow, that's how you
get better.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
How big is defending the paint against Southern what they
want to do offensively, Well, I.

Speaker 11 (18:59):
Mean it's big again anybody, And it's just it's who
we are. It's part of our base. It's you know,
protecting the house. You've seen the white lines down at
our practices and those things. Now, the other thing that
will be important with these guys is is house and
stafford in particular. They're gonna take a lot of tough twos,
the shots that we are in theory okay with, and
shots that might beat you for a stretch or a half,

(19:20):
but are challenging shots to beat you for an entire game,
so we have to stay the course. We've challenged our
guys to maintain our discipline and not bail them out
and not leave our feed and no tough ones.

We've got to stay the course.

for their third consecutive win and potentially their first win
over a Missouri Valley team since December of twenty twenty.
Last time that the Bison Beata Valley squad, it was
December twenty twenty one against Indiana State Bison one seventy
seven to seventy over the Sycamores. They came back from
down eleven in that game. Sam Grisol led the way

with twenty five points. As eddy as you got the
win here on this home floor. They'll try and see
if they can do that today against the Sulukis Decks.
They've played a couple of Valley teams over the last
couple of years. NDSU has last year had Illinois State
here at home, lost in a single digit battle, almost
beat Illinois State on the road the year before that one,

and of course obviously two losses against Southern Illinois on
the road, So always an interesting battle. What stands out
about Missouri Valley teams when you look at them from
a physical standpoint.

Speaker 4 (23:46):
Yeah, it's just kind of that next step of you know, size,
athleticism and basketball kind of the league as a whole,
Right Sam, you look at you look at the Missouri Valley,
that's kind of I would say the Missouri is kind
of like the definition of like mid major basketball right,
Like it's it's a strong conference usually all the way through.

(24:07):
It's not like there's one or two front runners that
constantly run the league. It's a really good league, good schools,
and kind of like similar to Midwest basketball, right, tough nose.
