Welcome to the Bison Basketball Show with head coach David
Richmond on the Pioneer Seeds Bison Sports Network from Learfield.
Now for the latest on NDSU men's basketball. Here's the
Voice of the Bison, Sam Niederman.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
Alrighty, everybody, welcome on in Monday night. Hope you're doing well.

Speaker 5 (00:38):
Great to see everybody as we we bring you into
another edition of the Bison Basketball Radio Show. We're coming
at you live from the Holiday Inn here in Fargo.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
Appreciate you coming on out here.

Speaker 5 (00:51):
We're with you for the next hour here on the
Bison Sports Network. Would love to see you. We got
our Coaches Show special eight bucks for Burger beer and fries.
We're talking buys and hoops as we get set for
a big week with NDSU back home and Fargo and
ready to pack the shack for a pair of home
games Tomorrow night and Wednesday night. Coach Richmond here with us. Coach.

(01:13):
Great to see you. Time to set the tone happy Monday,
my friend, this rock and roll.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah no, I was just telling the audience here. It
feels a little bit crisp. But like like Fargo in November. Uh,
we must be in November. We must be in Fargo.
So now the wind and all those things is a
good reminder that it's basketball season. I'm really excited, though, Sam,
obviously for a myriad of reasons. But you know, we

(01:38):
have a bunch of good home games here coming up
in the month of November, and that's odd. That's been different.
And excited to bring this group home and hopefully get
some validation too a process and be great to see
some you know, a packed you know, Shield Center tomorrow
and in Veterans Day and all those things. We have
signing Day coming up on Wednesday, So just plenty of
things going on this week within not just our program,

(02:01):
but just buysing athletics in general.

Speaker 5 (02:02):
You know, the non conference schedule, her usual coaches up
down around you don't know where you're at, and we
were just talking about it coming back from the West Coach.
You get acclimated home again, but then you look at
the calendar. We've got four in a row here inside
the shack.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Yeah, it feels great. And I was a little, you know,
a little disappointed. I know one of the Davis assistants,
Kyle Vote, and so I was talking to him the
other day. It just you know, just you know, swap
swapping information on each other's squads, and you know, we're
out there on Wednesday and you're expecting this beautiful weather
and it's raining the whole day Wednesday, and I so
I was talking to him about it. He's like, you know,
he goes, that's just complete ironic. He goes, it hasn't

(02:38):
rained here in twenty day or two hundred days, so perfect.
But you're you're right, you know, it starts against a
Andy Andy Newman has done a really good job at
Sea Sun, and you look at it. They got it
taken to him, you know, a couple of nights ago
at Northern Iowa. Obviously a very good program, and I
think they get beat by twenty thirty points, and it
shows kind of the culture that they have to then

(03:00):
be on the road and then respond. You know, they
were up yesterday fifteen or so against North Dakota and
then all of a sudden it was a possession here,
possession of their game, and you know, they were able
to find a way to win, and so we got
a very talented outfit coming into our place tomorrow night.
And then I like it too. We're going to play
back to back games this week and we have Saint
Skolaska on Wednesday, and if you want to win the

(03:21):
conference championship, right, if you want to win the tournament,
you're going to have to play back to back games.
And so you know, we'd try to do some things
like this throughout the course of the non conference season
to set ourselves up for, you know, ultimately the most
important time of year, and that's March.

Speaker 6 (03:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:34):
I was going to ask you, coach the back to
back get. You don't see it often, but by the design,
you get that prelude to what you're hoping is a
long stay in two falls to cut down the nets
in March. I was texting with Dexter earlier and he said,
you know, we did it a couple of times when
we played, and that's a good thing to kind of
simulate that postseason tournament.

Speaker 6 (03:54):
Yeah, it is.

Speaker 3 (03:54):
And I make no mistake, like we can't just beat
the crap out of our guys. Twenty four to seven,
three sixty five. But these are also eighteen to twenty two,
twenty three year old kids and we're not playing football
where you're you're you know, just banging and you know,
physically beat up a little bit. And you know, we
can do some things like this to challenge our guys
to be uncomfortable. But ultimately, the big thing, like you

(04:15):
and Dexter talk about, like I just mentioned, is as
we are always have a process that starts with the
end in mind, and you know, the end in mind
is hopefully a Saturday Sunday, you know option for us,
and we need to be prepared for those things to
go back to back.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
No doubt about it. We're gonna have a fun show
tonight with our life like that. I was fired up
when you gave me the light up earlier. We've got
Tomorrow Wheeler Thomas, who's gonna come on by great to
see tomorrow back out on the floor and to buy
the uniform this past week. And then Mark hai Strickland,
who is new to us this year and he certainly
had a fantastic.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
He's had a great weekend. You know, he had a
great week I should say on the court, and I
think he had seventeen in both nights and very active.
But you're also going to see a very fun personality.
Marque is a guy that's just real joy to be around,
got an infectious smile, and e lead athlete athlete. You know,
I think in both of those two games he was
or you know, was pretty close to the best best
athlete on the floor. And you know, part of that

(05:11):
is now getting him and us learning to play together
with different rotations and all those things. So I'm excited
for tonight and excited for this week, and excited to
have those two great gentlemen on here later on.

Speaker 5 (05:22):
They're gott to join us at about six thirty. So
if you get a question for Kai or tomorrow, you
can drop it on our BIS and Athletics Facebook page.
Question for coach same thing as well. Listening back home,
you can text us call us seven zero one four
seven six sixteen sixty and we'll get your questions in
here on a Monday night edition of the Bison Basketball Show.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Again.

Speaker 5 (05:42):
Two great opportunities to get to the shack here this week.
We've got Saint Scholaska Wednesday at seven and then tomorrow
night at seven, the home opener against seasun Cal State
Northridge coming into Fargo. They were just up in Grand
Forks and get a take on an outfit that won
twenty two games last year. Coach went to the end
it and you've referenced it. They they've kind of built

(06:03):
some steam under a coach Andy Newman there.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah, absolutely, I believe, you know, a program that had
had some struggles, had some you know, the n C
double A in there for some some allegations and some
things like that, and coach Newman, you know, is obviously
coming there and created a winning culture and doing some
things the right way. I don't know, I'm never spoken
to him. The assistance have lined up the scheduling, but
you know, a great opportunity for us and and again

(06:25):
a great opportunity for me to to speak to Yeah,
I'm disappointed that we, you know, couldn't get over the
hump and in a couple of those games this past week.
But this is a group that I'm gonna stand firm
on that I'm very very excited about. And we need
to build something and I don't want we need to
build something inside the shack, inside ultimately the Shields Shield
Center and to get some fans to to get out.

(06:48):
We were out there this after or the you know,
late this morning with jewelry and just having those students
and you could just you know a different level of
tone and decimals and all those with the students. But
you know, we we we've we've engaged some students on
campus and challenge them to do some things to help
us out. And you know, excited to be at home,
but also you know, really excited and encouraged to see

(07:10):
what we can make this home venue be about. Because
it is a beautiful facility, it is a is a
great product, and hopefully we can get some fans to
come out and support us along the way.

Speaker 5 (07:20):
Yeah, started early and get the run all the way
into March. How much do you relay that on to
the guys, coach, the importance of representing Fargo in the
community and defending the home courts.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
One hundred percent. And this is a blue collar, you
know community that that's not scared of hard work, and
that's who we need to be. And I think that
is something that I've challenged our group with as successful
as a season as we had last year, winning twenty
one games and doing those things, and we dropped some
games at home, and if you want to be a
very good basketball team, you know, you've got to take
care of business, you know, at home, and you got

(07:50):
to hope for a split on the road and do
those things. And so clearly we have some things to
make up on the road now and find a way
to get a couple back there. But also it starts,
you know what's present and what's in front of us
tomorrow night, and that's defending our home territory. And I
think the biggest thing is as you saw how elite
offensively we were, and I know at some point on

(08:10):
this show we'll probably talk about our shooting woes and
those things, but you know, we need to establish our
identity of being that great defensive team and finishing possessions
team and valuing the basketball. And I think for a
lot of the a lot of it, we're doing those things.
But to entrench ourselves and engage this home crowd, that
needs to be a staple of what we're about here

(08:31):
this week.

Speaker 5 (08:31):
Yeah, I think everybody's going to really enjoy some of
the intensity we saw defensively in those first couple of games,
and then building off of that as we get ready
to tip it off tomorrow night against cal State Northridge.
Coach Dave Richmond here with us at the Holiday Inn.
We're just getting started. Seven zero one four seven six

Speaker 5 (11:15):
We're now a Federson the feed from Stefanowitz. Bison back
within one twenty one twenty Welcome back on in Bison
Basketball radio show here at the Holiday Inn. Coach Dave
Richmond with us, and you heard it right there. A
nice highlight from over the weekend, Noah Federson throwing it
down with two hands, the Bison coming back from the

(11:36):
West Coast and getting set for a four game homestand
and getting ready for the home opener tomorrow night against Seasun.
Coach those first two games, we touched on him a
little bit there in the opening segment. You had a
chance to review the tape on both of them. Were
your final reflections, well.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
I think the thing that we're all gonna go and
gravitate too, and you know, the bright sun that we
want to stare at is we didn't shoot the ball
very well. In fact, you shot it awful. Let's just
be honest, and nine for fifty eight and sixteen percent,
that's not that's not going to help. But I think
we all need to make a conscious effort to understand
as much more fun as it would have been if

(12:16):
those shots would have gone in, and they can certainly
help an eighteen to twenty three year old psyche is.
I thought there were some things we can build off of.
We offensive rebounded the basketball extremely well. You mentioned it earlier,
some of the intensity that we play with defensively that
really forced some turnovers in particular, and in that Davis game,
and besides that second half of that Davis game, I

(12:38):
thought we were a pretty darn good defensive team. And
it's encouraging to see, you know, this group and the
short term kind of come together and respond defensively. And
I think the biggest thing that I'm trying to have
perspective on is and the reality of it is and
an excuse of it is or whatever you want to
label it is. This is still a very new group
and a new group that was just been on the

(13:00):
O and trying to find a little bit of rhythm
and their roles you take tomorrow that's going to be
on here didn't play at basketball last year. Noel Fetterson,
who I was very actually encouraged with when we went
back and watched a lot of the you know, the
eighty minutes from from last week, like you're gonna you're
going to lean on those misshots at the end of

(13:20):
the games and all those things. But that's a different
role for for Fetti to be that guy, and sometimes
you just got to go through those experiences. Jacksonmoni wasn't
Jacksonmoni that we know and remember those first three or
four games, and so, you know, very encouraged. I thought,
Andy Stefano, it's you know, was very good. I thought Marcy,
you know, like you said, scored the ball and did

(13:40):
some things like that. I think we just got a
bunch of new guys and new roles and new levels
and doing those things that are still trying to find
their way. And you can call that whatever you want.
You can call it excuse, you can call it reality.
It just is what it is right now, And do
I wish we were two? And oh, absolutely it would
have been nice to be in one on one and
those things certainly. But but I'm I'm not gonna flinch

(14:01):
from what I said here last Monday or the last
couple of Mondays ago, and tell you this is a
very good basketball group that likes being around each other.
And you know, I'm encouraged the way they responded with
some practice things and accepted the things that they need
to accept. And I'm also I'm also you know, a
guy that likes to point the finger out myself, and
I'm learning this group. I'm trying to figure out different

(14:21):
rotations with some things. So you know, it's all part
of the process. You know, I had a good friend
tell me, like, we're in the fight. You know, we
got a bloody nose coming out of that fight. Sure,
but we're but we're in the fight, and that's all
we can ask for.

Speaker 5 (14:33):
How do you relay that message, coach of the process,
And you know, obviously you'd love to get the results
and come back to it. Oh, you've got some things
to build on, You've got some things that you can
improve and tinker with here at the very early stages.
How do you make sure that you effectively deliver that
message to your group?

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Yeah, I mean you could just really, you know, hope
that they're listening. And I think that's the biggest thing.
Are they really truly hearing what we're saying and do
they trust those things? And that that's the hard part. Yeah,
let's make no mistakes. Sooner rather than later. It'd be
really nice to have some validation in the process and
for them to experience those fun successful results. Make no
mistake about it. But do you really truly love basketball? Right?

(15:14):
Do you love competing? Do you love the next opportunity
that's in front of you? Are you going to be
you know another thing I've heard failure isn't final, you know,
but but you can you can still the Oregon State
you see Davis game. If we're gonna pout, can cost
us another week if if we don't respond for those things,
and so we've got to make sure and celebrate some

(15:36):
of the positives, build on some of the encouraging things,
learn from some of the mistakes. You've got to get
back in the gym, get back in the lab. As
the guys saying, go back to work, and you know
all too well, and and and and again a little
bit of some of the league basketball. This is part
part of November. When you look around the landscape of
our league and the things that you know, where teams

(15:56):
are at and where you know we're going, it's frustrating.
It does make it any easier. But being frustrated and
and and only relying on the on the results right
now isn't going to get us anywhere. We need to
keep hitting on the process.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
I'll just rip the band aid off.

Speaker 5 (16:11):
Coach Iversly, just to ask about the shooting, is it
Is it more of a mental thing when when you
kind of have a bad shooting night to just stick
with it. How did you kind of see it unfold?

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Call me crazy? This is a this is a team
now and now again, I'm not going to backpedal on
anything I've said.

Speaker 6 (16:26):
I don't.

Speaker 3 (16:27):
I didn't anticipate us to shoot it to the level
that we did last year. That's not the personnel that
we have. We have other strengths compared to last year's personnel.
But but I but I've been around this group and
two exhibition games. I've been around this group throughout you know,
months of practice, and we will shoot it better. And again,
I am just going to attribute it to yeah, is
it some of it does? Some things start to creep

(16:48):
in a little bit. Yeah, But like it's Trevion Carson
is a hell of a basketball player, and we all
know that, we've all seen that. But this is his
first Division one you know, games is first eighty minutes
of Division one basketball. He's getting his feet way. Same
with Tay Smith. Ta Tay Smith is a great shooter.
Now he shot it the best out of anybody. But
it's just it's just new for everybody. Sam and and

(17:10):
anybody that wants to listen, you can take that any
way you want. I don't care. But we got to
go through these things. They were great shots. We're going
to continue to let them fly now. At the same sense,
like I know our guys and we've challenged them and
they're going to continue to get in the gym and
behind the scenes. And I do feel like, you know,
Tyler would maybe tell you in hitting in baseball or
you know anything like that, some of that is contagious, right,

(17:33):
and you start to put too much onto it. And
but ultimately I'm not gonna let any any win. I'm
not gonna let any loss be defined by how we
shot the basketball. And I think we were right there
and gave ourselves a great chance against the big you know,
Pac twelve school in Oregon State. A couple of possessions here,
a couple of possessions there. We let that one slide.
You know, if you want to look at anything in
point to blame, it's it's it's who we were defensively

(17:55):
in the second half against UC Davis.

Speaker 4 (17:57):
No doubt about it.

Speaker 5 (17:58):
Coach Uh, you look at defensively, the points off and
turnovers were the big thing that jumps out. Yeah, thirty
eight points off turn over, thirty turnovers forced across those
two games.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
Well, and I think too, like again, we will shoot
it better? Do we shoot it to the high thirties
like we did last year? Like I said, I don't
anticipate that. But so we have to figure out different
ways to manufacture some points. And you saw us get
twenty offensive rebounds. That's another way to manufacture some points
with some extra opportunities. But also getting those steals and
doing some things to create some offense from our defense

(18:33):
is something that can be really encouraging too. I'd like
to see our group get out and run a little
bit more made or miss, push the ball up, and
you know, we've challenged our wings to run, We've challenged
our bigs to get to the front of the room quicker,
and then ultimately to Maury and Andy to get that ball,
push the pace a little bit and create some early
offense for us.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
You mentioned the offensive rebounding two coach, it was certainly
evident against Oregon State, winning the glass in that game outright,
and then picked up a number of chances against UC
Davis as well. How much did did you see the
team buy into crashing just over the last week.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
Well, it's not just the last week. I think it's
it's it's how we're built a little bit. You walk
in the gym and you see a longer, more physical,
stronger athletic basketball team. And and you know, anybody that's
been in the practice gym and seeing us play and
then you know been out to see us, you can
see those things. And so that's got to be part
of our identity. And I like that, you know, it's

(19:27):
as I love the analogy that we're in the fight,
and I love the analogy that we got a bloody
knows right and then and that shows that blue collar
thing that's gonna and and that is that is being
a great team defensively, that has been a great team
rebounding to basketball and both ends of the floor. And
I do very encourage after eighty minutes of basketball from

(19:47):
from those things.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
No doubt about.

Speaker 5 (19:48):
It be fun to watch it here in the shack

against Oregon State on opening night for the Bison, traveon
Carson knocking down a three pointer and another nice sequence
of ball movement there. Coach that was early on in
the game when momentum starts swinging our way.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
Here Stregi in the background calling out the plays the action. Hey,
here's a question for you. Sam. In your office or
in your building, do you have anything that has another
like competitors logo up or anything like that.

Speaker 5 (24:07):
No, absolutely not No, No either would I.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
And but I don't know, Like when I walk by
Hannah's office every day, there's.

Speaker 4 (24:16):
Oh, no, I know where this is going.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
This is it's unbelievable. You wouldn't do that.

Speaker 4 (24:20):
Huh No, I would not.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
I certainly wouldn't.

Speaker 5 (24:23):
You want to walk into the office and no, this
is the voice of the Bison's office.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
Correct, and this is the Bison's home.

Speaker 6 (24:29):
Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (24:29):
I just thought i'd ask you a question on are oh.

Speaker 5 (24:32):
Man, make sure we're on the same Hannah. What are
we doing here? Yeah, Hannah from dsu Athletics of the House. Yeah,
give manna around red faces. Yeah, no, that's uh. We
might need to work on that. There might need to
work on that, for sure. I've got one of my
favorite things I've got the first game in the shack.

(24:52):
It was one of the first things I got when
I got here against Arkansas State.

Speaker 4 (24:56):
You remember that one.

Speaker 3 (24:57):
Oh yeah, I was there head coaching in that way
and we won. If you go into our conference room,
which you've been in there, that whole wall is a
picture of that in the wallpaper. So yeah, that was
that was man. Let's get that back.

Speaker 4 (25:10):
Yeah, get that back.

Speaker 5 (25:11):
Yeah, that was five thousand strong for opening night Arkansas State.
We're going to see again later on in the Thanksgiving.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Thanks Happy Thanksgiving, Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Speaker 4 (25:20):
Yeah, here we go. Have we gotten the menu figured out?

Speaker 6 (25:23):
All right?

Speaker 3 (25:23):
I don't know that's a good question. I need to
ask Cameron ger that. I'm sure he's on top of.

Speaker 4 (25:27):
Coach Grere will have it. Coach Greer will have it.
For sure.

Speaker 5 (25:29):
I'll be a good family Thanksgiving for Bison med's basketball,
for sure.

Speaker 4 (25:34):
I love it. Coach.

Speaker 5 (25:35):
It's gonna be a good time to get the shack
all filled up again. Pretty cool when you have a
chance to show, as we've talked about with some of
our new guys, the culture of Bison basketball right NDSU,
it doesn't change, it stays the same. Those values are there,
and you got a chance to suit up under the lights.
Obviously we had the Morehead exhibition, but to defend your
home court again.

Speaker 3 (25:56):
You know, yeah, absolutely, and I think, you know, I'll
be able to speak openly a little bit more openly
about it Wednesday on signing date, you know. But we're
gonna you know, bring in five new guys that that
we're very excited about and fit it. And you know,
I'll take credit for for one thing, and that's about it,
and that's laying a foundation of the right people that
we want into our program and give our staff a

(26:16):
tremendous amount of credit as they're out in the portal
and in high school recruiting, junior college recruiting, uh, vetting
the process, you know, based on relationships and asking a
ton of questions to make sure we continue to have
the right people. And you're gonna see that, you know
when when you get to meet Kai here, you know, in.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
A little bit.

Speaker 3 (26:32):
But it's it's also more of that credit goes to
the Tomori's, the Carsons, you know, the and He's, the trade,
the traces, uh, the Noel Fetterson's that have come that
that have been here before, They've learned from the past,
and uh, like tomorrow is somebody to like Tomorrow is
a hell of a competitor. You know, he's a very
very talented basketball player. He started to take some ownership
and some leadership and having some difficult conversations. Wants those things.

(26:54):
Not afraid to challenge me with some things. And you
know that's part of a successful successful program. I think
we talk about ownership and when it's a coach led program,
you're going to be good. Right when you have a player,
you know, a player led program, you have a chance.

Speaker 6 (27:08):
To be elite.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
And you know, these guys are slowly even giving Kay
credit to like he's coming in here and maybe hasn't
had some successes, but you know, the attention to detail
that he's embracing here and the work ethic that he
that he's brought and the time that he's put in,
those results are going to pay off for all of us.

Speaker 5 (27:24):
How much fun is it for you coach when you
have a player like Damari who's in year four of
the program and Noah as well, when you get to
continue to coach and get to continue to develop.

Speaker 3 (27:33):
Well, yeah, it's fun because they still have an attitude
that that craves improvement. You know, I'm just me and
they know and they'll laugh and they'll talk about it,
but like they still want to get better. They're still
up in the office. There's still early morning workouts, and
and that that's what's fun about it, right, you know.
And and but it's all of us, and we talk
about I refuse to talk about it, but there is

(27:55):
you know, with this day and age, people want to
talk about it. It's a very transactional era of basketball.
I will never be a part of that. We We
are all about transfer, transformation, transfer, transforming young men, you know,
students and then obviously basketball players. And and I think
that's the beauty of our program. I think people people
see that we've had success. They see the development track

(28:16):
record of you know, man, so people from Fargo, North
Dakota are moving on and doing some different things at
some different levels in different places. What's going on there,
And we want to surround ourselves with that, like guys
like that, the guys like that want to continue to
improve their game. And just as I was walking in,
I had a chance to talk to Mason Miller, you.

Speaker 6 (28:33):
Know, who was with us last year.

Speaker 3 (28:34):
And you know, it's it's fun to do things like
that that you know, Mason was only here for you know,
less than twelve months. But yet you know, you still
have a relationship, can still communicate with and you know,
do those things. And and that's what I love about
what I get to do, what we.

Speaker 6 (28:48):
Get to do.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
How's Mace doing. Mace is great.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
He just got done running a marathon, oh wow, in October.
He he he didn't give me an exact time, but
he got his goal. It was under four hours, if
you know.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
May Uh.

Speaker 3 (29:00):
He's very type A and very task oriented, so I'm
sure uh he crushed that. I was a little jealous too.
I called him like a week ago and he finally
got back to me and he was apologizing over the top.
Sorry I didn't get back and I'm like, no, I
wish I didn't have to have my phone on me
as much. So Mace's doing great. He's in the real
world engage. Sounds like mom and Dad are doing good.

(29:21):
So you know, hopefully we'll get to see them when
we're in Des Moines. It's a little bit closer, you know,
when we played Drake and and I'm sure too, Mason's
got a relationship with Tomorrow and a lot of these
guys that that he'll get his butt up to Fargo
at some point too.

Speaker 5 (29:33):
Yeah, might need to get him back. Not only is
Shap but for the Fargo Marathon Memorial Day weekend. He's
right mathon, that's awesome exactly.

Speaker 6 (29:41):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (29:41):
I've never done one, but if I've done one and
completed it, I don't know if I'd ever any reason
to do too.

Speaker 4 (29:47):
So what's enough? I think what is enough for sure?

Speaker 5 (29:50):
Okay, Coach Richmond here with us, so we're gonna take
another time out. We got some questions still to get
to on the text line here for coach Tomorrow and
Kyle in the house as well. Appreciate everybody being in here.

It's lake over on the high left side, driving to
the right wing, SIPs it and so it by Smith,
jump the passing away, drives in and puts it down.

Speaker 4 (33:20):
Put the left hand a duck by Tay smam and
a time out.

Speaker 5 (33:24):
Take it by Oregon State the bison arriving here in
this season opener, the steal and slam for Smith and
Oregon State has to call for time twenty nine twenty
five indsu Tay Smith with a steal and slam. Like
to call that one a pick six coach just took

(33:46):
it and run the other way.

Speaker 3 (33:47):
So it's interesting both and you can ask Kai and tomorrow.
They're way better athletes than ever imagine. But most right
handed guys jump off their left foot. Sure, so Tay
is always done at the opposite and I said, what's
going on with this? He goes, you know, Coach, I
just never and never had any like help working out
or anything like that as I was growing up, And

(34:07):
he said, I just learned to jump, you know, off
both feet, and then it really transformed into, you know,
learning to jump off my right foot. So it's odd
for him, it's almost backwards, but that's what he does.

Speaker 6 (34:17):
That's what he does naturally.

Speaker 3 (34:18):
So it was fun to see him obviously tasting an
elite shooter, but to get him out on the break
and show some of his athleticism was encouraging.

Speaker 5 (34:24):
Yeah, we'll keep an eye out for that detail once
we get in the shack tomorrow. Tay Smith, one of
our new boys in here for NDSU, got a couple
questions here, coach to start on a text line Ron
in Fargo. We appreciate to Ron. Always good to have
the text here for you. Ask coach, how might the
strength and conditioning routine vary throughout the season, especially right

(34:46):
now during a non conference.

Speaker 3 (34:47):
Yeah, I mean it's a little bit more challenging in
the non conference because we don't play in the rhythm
like that we do in the league play where it's
more like a Thursday Saturday, but we have a routine
based on the number of days of prep we have
in between games, and so we were able to get
our guys three days out, they were able to lift
a little bit on Saturday right after practice, and I think.

Speaker 6 (35:08):
That was big.

Speaker 3 (35:09):
We'll also do some things with some of our guys
that aren't playing as much or that are going to
red shirt, We'll lift them a little bit more. You know,
as football, as Tim would tell you, Jury would tell
any any program within you know, INDIASU Athletic. This is
still we want it to be about development, and there's
some things maybe not a Marcais or a Tay, but
there's still some guys that are new to or this program,

(35:29):
Trevion Carson, Max Marley that still have a lot of
development physically to do too, and so it's important that
we take advantage of those opportunities, but also too, like
we want to be able to we're not trying to
just set record gains in the strength, to Ron's point,
but we do need to make sure we're maintaining and
you know, all of a sudden it comes February March,
the most important time of year, and you know we're

(35:50):
down ten pounds or our strength isn't up, so you know,
we need to make sure we're keeping keeping them tabs
on those things. We're also doing some things that the
football team has done to measure just where we're at physically,
and right now we're in good shape.

Speaker 5 (36:04):
Love to hear it one more coach before we let
you go tomorrow night the home opener. You mentioned getting
the crowd in and making an impact not only in
this game and this upcoming four game homestand but all
year long. What would you like to see as we
look to set the tone at home.

Speaker 3 (36:18):
You know, this is this is a challenge to myself
and to the two gentlemen that you're going to hear from,
you know, right after me, and we obviously need to
do our part of go out and play a tough,
blue collar, exciting brand of basketball in the same sense
like you know, our our administration, marketing, our guys, students,
everybody is just like this is a this is a
big swell. It needs to be a big swell. Like

(36:40):
I'm so proud of, you know, our football program and
the history and tradition, but the Shield Center is a
special place Sam, and you can just see me get
going out like there's more to it. And we ask
a lot of our fans. I understand that we and
with the green and gold fun, we ask another thing.
But the most important support to me, and I maybe

(37:02):
Derek Lang or Matt Larsam will argue with me, is
is getting out and supporting our student athletes and and
and creating an engaging environment that that's still the spirit
and atmosphere behind college athletics. And so you know, however,
you want to take it as a challenge as an encouragement.
We want to get people out. We want to get
people out, go and have a burger and beer in
the shack, go and watch them exciting basketball in a

(37:25):
beautiful venue. And so let's go. We got two great
opportunities to come out and get behind this group, meet
a new group, but also still know that the N,
the D, the S, and the U in the front
of the jersey hasn't changed. And there's a lot of
things that that that you're going to be able to
see that reflect this wonderful community.

Speaker 5 (37:42):
We cannot wait. Coach is going to be a blast
here all week long the next two weeks, getting to
set up camp here at Fargo and go play some basketballs.

That was a fun play. You had the hustle down
on the defensive end. Tomorrow and the next thing you know,
it's a showtime for you at the other end. Marky,
how was it playing together these last couple of games.

Speaker 24 (42:01):
It was good, you know, just getting used to each other.

Speaker 6 (42:04):
Uh, huh, Yeah.

Speaker 4 (42:05):
I'd say it. It worked out pretty well on that
last one tomorrow.

Speaker 6 (42:08):
Yeah, that's a good way to put it.

Speaker 4 (42:10):
That's a good way to put it, no doubt.

Speaker 6 (42:12):
See how electric Kay is?

Speaker 4 (42:13):
Yeah? Yeah? How are these dunks for you? Mark Kaya?

Speaker 5 (42:16):
It was fun watching you these last two games get
up there and slam it home in a variety of ways.

Speaker 25 (42:22):
I know it shocked a lot of people, especially coach,
because in practice I don't even dunk.

Speaker 6 (42:26):
Like that, So.

Speaker 4 (42:28):
Got to say the best for the games.

Speaker 24 (42:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 25 (42:30):
I try to tell him that sometimes, but he'd be like,
do it and I don't, So you could do it
in a game.

Speaker 4 (42:35):
That's right. Yeah. Well it was awesome man, Tamori. Was
great to see you out on the floor.

Speaker 5 (42:40):
How did it feel for you after not playing last
year to get back out there first time under the
lights in the regular season.

Speaker 26 (42:47):
I'd say it definitely felt a little weird at first.
I told Dave even the first exhibition we had at Minnesota,
I mentioned as soon as I came out that I
felt weird out there. But it's getting back to regular
more and more so as the season goes on better,
you know.

Speaker 5 (43:00):
Yeah, it's great to see you out there, my friend.
I mean last year behind the scenes, getting better, healed up,
and here you go into your junior season. Just how
grateful are you to be here in this position and
to be a veteran now with this program.

Speaker 6 (43:14):
That was definitely a big blessing.

Speaker 26 (43:16):
You know, a lot of prayer, and I'm back to
playing now with the guys, and we got a good
group of guys that the coach has brung in this year.

Speaker 5 (43:22):
No doubt, Markai, you're part of the new group. And
your first year here in Fargo. You had played here
in Fargo last December, which is kind of crazy to
think about. And NDYSU played at Western Michigan, your previous
school as a season opener two years ago. What of
your first impressions of Fargo been like? Just over these
last couple of months, this is.

Speaker 25 (43:44):
Great, you know, just hanging out with my teammates, them
showing me around, showing me everything that's fun and Fargo
to do.

Speaker 24 (43:50):
So we just have fun and enjoy the moment.

Speaker 5 (43:53):
Could you have imagined coming here to DSU after playing
last December?

Speaker 6 (43:58):
Uh?

Speaker 25 (43:58):
Nah, I didn't, but I took a picture in front
of the little fake Bison's in the arena after our
shoot around.

Speaker 24 (44:04):
So I always look back at that like, wow, I
go here now.

Speaker 5 (44:07):
Yeah, yeah, it was just a little easter egg for
you before it all ended up working out. How was
it on the on the visit that just early on
getting recruited by the staff or what did those conversations
sound like.

Speaker 25 (44:19):
I didn't even come on a business I just talked
to coaches on the phone and it just decided that
it was meant for me. Just just the developmental part
is what I needed for my game to be able
to excel. So just coming here, I knew that they
would help me a lot.

Speaker 5 (44:33):
No doubt at tomorrow. You've seen this program here now
the last few years. What's it been like to get
this particular group some chemistry. You guys clearly have a
good time on and off the court, and that definitely
translates with you guys take it out on the floor.

Speaker 26 (44:48):
Yeah, I think obviously the chemistry would be the biggest
thing for every good team, you know, And what was
I think it's like a natural theme. You know, everybody
plays a lot, everybody like jokes around, but we can
be locked and when we need to lock.

Speaker 6 (45:00):
In, you know.

Speaker 5 (45:01):
Yeah, Yeah, it's been fun to seeing guys out and
about in the community as well. What's it been like
for you just getting to know Fargo here these last
few years coming over from Illinois.

Speaker 26 (45:12):
I think it's been like a really nice thing. People
always say it's like the people here in Fargo that like,
you know, make you stay and like help you have fun.
And it's definitely true. You know, the people of Fargo
are way different than how it would be back at home.
You know, everybody's nice, everybody's like a joy to be around.

Speaker 5 (45:28):
Number one for you here this year used to be
number ten. That's what our fans are accustomed to. Take
me behind this number change? How did this go down?

Speaker 26 (45:36):
Yeah, it's really Number one was my always my favorite number,
and it was my au number. But I know I
was ten in high school because my high school coach
forced me to be so once I got the chance too,
I was like, let me go back to my regular number.

Speaker 4 (45:47):
Going back to the roots. I like it.

Speaker 5 (45:49):
It looks good on you, my friend. We're good number
o udo. What about you, Kai? You're number thirty? How
did that come about?

Speaker 4 (45:55):
Here? And the Bison green and Gold?

Speaker 24 (45:58):
I was gonna wear twenty two.

Speaker 25 (46:00):
I was on my number and then I'm just like,
my dad wore thirty, and because Max goes here, Max
Marley and him and my dad play together, so I
was just like, I'll just wear his number.

Speaker 5 (46:09):
Yeah, a little callback you both of your guys' dad's
played out of the heat for a few years, which
is pretty cool. How's it been seeing that connection come
full circle now that you and Max our teammates here
at a DSU.

Speaker 25 (46:22):
It's crazy because like everything we do, like if we'll
go out to eat, like we always just say like
our dads probably did this time. So it's just crazy
to it's like a full circle moment.

Speaker 4 (46:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (46:32):
How big of an influence was your dad growing up?
Not only on the court, but just your relationship that
you've had with him throughout the years.

Speaker 24 (46:40):
He was a big influence.

Speaker 25 (46:41):
I would say, like when I was younger, it was
like he would try to push me to do it
and then he told me like I'll come to him.
So once I came to him with it, then like
he just pushed me even harder play basketball.

Speaker 4 (46:51):
So it's been good, no doubt. How would you compare
it to trash your guys' games.

Speaker 24 (46:57):
I'm whipping him, I'm i swear I'm whipping him.

Speaker 5 (47:00):
Yeah, no, no, uh, no doubt about it. Yeah, did
not hold back there. Did you guys ever get to
play a little one on one at all year when
you've been in college?

Speaker 24 (47:11):
Uh, when I've been in college now and high school
used to play.

Speaker 4 (47:13):
All uh huh.

Speaker 24 (47:14):
I like the park.

Speaker 5 (47:14):
But yeah, so you're from Miami originally where your dad
played all the heat. Tell me about growing up in Miami.

Speaker 25 (47:22):
It's always hot and I don't know. Miami to me
is normal to me, like compared to everybody else, Like
when they asked me about it, I just think it's
like normal because like I'm just so used to it.
I don't go to the beach every day like they
think that I'll just go to the beach or like
at the.

Speaker 24 (47:37):
Pool every day. But it's just regular.

Speaker 5 (47:39):
Yeah, yeah, good fun place to go visit. Been down
there a couple of times. So what about Elgin for
you tomorrow? Outside of Chicago and still in the Midwest,
a little further from Fargo, but still in the Midwestern footprint.

Speaker 26 (47:51):
I mean, this is regular like anywhere else, nothing crazy,
nothing like Miami. I'm trying to get out to Miami
at least once you know, but yeah, nothing crazy.

Speaker 4 (48:00):
Yeah, shout out to Bayari there.

Speaker 5 (48:01):
