In Italia ne sono affette circa 140 mila persone, in grande prevalenza donne. L’esordio clinico e la diagnosi avvengono prevalentemente tra i 20 e 40 anni di età – in un periodo che coincide con l’età fertile. Sebbene non esistano dati a supporto di un’inferenza diretta dei processi immunopatologici patologici sulla fertilità, il tasso riproduttivo delle persone con SM è inferiore rispetto a quello della popolazione generale. Questo è imputabile, verosimilmente, all’impatto psicosociale della diagnosi stessa, al possibile coinvolgimento neurologico delle funzioni sessuali, nonché, in alcuni casi, alle tempistiche e ai vincoli del percorso clinico-terapeutico.
