Speaker 1 (00:00):
For more, we want to bring ABC's Marcus Moore, who
is live inside a bunker in Tel Aviv. Marcus, what
are you seeing there?

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Well, Morgan, we moved down to one of the shelters
here at the hotel after we got alerts on our phones.
This has become a regular process over the past forty
eight to seventy two hours. This after Israel launched that
surprise attack on Iran on Thursday night Friday morning, and

(00:28):
since that time it's been extremely tense. It was already
a tense time, as you know, but Iran retaliating, firing
a number of projectiles, and we have been monitoring some
of the activity that appears to be towards the north
of Israel, in the Haifa area, and it remains to
be seen exactly what has happened there. We'll have to

(00:50):
wait to get some clarity, but I can tell you
that it's quite active right now, Morgan, and certainly after
what we have been through over the past forty eight hours.
Earlier today, we were in a city just on the
outskirts of Tel Aviv where a building, several buildings were
destroyed after an Iranian missile strike landed there. Sadly, a

(01:13):
woman was killed, and we know that after Iran's retaliation
at least three people were killed here in Israel and
there were dozens of dozens of injuries, and so the
casualties here, the numbers have been have been rising. We've
also heard from officials in Iran that at least seventy

(01:35):
eight people have been killed as a result of the
Israeli strikes that have been have been ongoing there. And
what we are seeing now is this volley of bissle,
these waves of air attacks, and the concern has long
been how long this will go and all the signs

(01:57):
right now pointing that this is far from Overel has
said that their operation against Iran is just beginning. They
today released new information about the progress of this operation,
saying that they did hit numerous nuclear facilities in Iran
as well as military strategic sites as well, and that

(02:19):
they were gaining superiority in the air over Tehran, particularly
from a western Iran into the east towards towards Tehran.
And so that's what we heard from Israeli officials, that
was their claim, Morgan, and they have also said that
they would continue with this operation. And just a quick
note on what we have heard from the Iranians. The
Supreme Leader had said today earlier that this was going

(02:42):
to be a very long night for the Israelis, and
it would appear that that's what we were beginning to see
right now here tonight in Israel.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Morgan, and you know, Marcus, we saw you this morning
on Good Morning America and it appeared that you know,
you were outside, you were showing us the damage as well.
Can you talk a little bit about what you seen,
but then also give us a sense of what people
on the ground there are telling you is what is
the sense there are they obviously concern and fear. What
is their day to day life like?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Well, I mean, I think if you can imagine just
your own life, right, I mean, people wherever you are,
whether you're in Israel, Iran, the US, or anywhere in
the world, you're just trying to live your life. And
what we saw today were hundreds of people who had
gathered at that site, that missile strike site, and they

(03:34):
were just watching and looking. Many of those people who
we met had actually spent hours in their own shelters,
at their homes or near their homes, hearing the explosions,
and certainly hoping for the best, not sure exactly what
was happening, and if they would come up and see
their home. And so I think if you can put

(03:58):
yourself in their shoes, you get a sense of how
traumatic and how worrisome this is. I mean, this is
their home and people are having to live through this
as best they can. I met one man who he
was in his shelter and he described how the walls
were shaking, and he's from here, he's from Tel Aviv,
and he said he's never been through anything like this.

(04:20):
And I asked, you know, what is your hope, and
he said that he was just hoping for peace. He
hopes that all of the sides will at the very
least come back to the table and negotiate, he said,
because we don't need this suffering. And you know, he said,
no matter what your politics are, whether you support the
current Israeli government or you don't support them, he talked

(04:42):
about speaking up about that and having your voice heard,
and he said that the message should be one of peace.
That was his perspective on this, and it was a
very revealing moment because he told me one thing, Morgan.
He said, I'm looking at this destruction and I'm wondering
if this will be me tomorrow or today. He said,

(05:04):
I don't know what's gonna happen today. And of course
this was before this latest wave of air strikes that
we're seeing right now, or at least these attempted air strikes,
as we have seen in previous days of Israel's air
defense system is robust. There has been success, some success

(05:25):
in stopping a majority of those projectiles, those missiles and drones,
but as we've seen, some have managed to get through.
And as we look through the days ahead and the
hours ahead, the question becomes how prepared and how capable
is the air defense system here to stop the projectiles
that are coming in tonight. And those are all things
that people here are thinking about. But Morgan, at the

(05:48):
end of the day, certainly people just want to protect
their families, their children, And so that gives you some
sense of how how much of a difficult time this
is for so many people, not only here in Israel
but across the Middle East.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
And you bring up such a good point when we
talk about conflict, when we talk about violence, you know,
it's important to center the humans in this as well.
Is there any indication on either side, whether Iran or Israel,
that as this particular conflict continues to pay play out.
Israel has already said that it's going to continue, you know,
it's assault as well. But are there any is there

(06:26):
any positioning of humanitarian efforts or what type of resources
are on the ground, both in Israel and Iran.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Well, I can speak to Israel where we are right now,
and certainly in terms of preparations, we know that the
Israelis have mobilized thousands of reservists and today I was
speaking to officials with the municipality where we were just
on the outskirts of Tel Aviv at that strike side,

(06:56):
and they were working to find places for a residence
lived in those buildings, long term shelter for them, and
so that is all a work in progress at this point,
and certainly the response has been large, has been swift,
and so they're doing everything they can to try to
support the families who've been affected by this. And it's
an ongoing thing and it's obviously very kinetic right now

(07:19):
because this is happening and it's also unprecedented, so they
are trying to meet the challenge as best they can.
And in terms of the humanitarian aspect, that's something that
we'll watch over the coming days. But certainly the immediate
concern and the immediate priority is number one, having a
safe place for residents to go in events like we

(07:43):
are in right now, when there's air strikes going on
or air raid sirens that have sounded, do they have
a safe shelter? And then beyond that, will there be
a place for them to live? And the answer to
those questions are remained to be answered at this point.
We'll just have to wait and see. But I it's
it's a good question, and I think Morgan it also

(08:05):
it brings to light really the the the human nature
of all of this. While we talk about the military
strategies and UH air defense systems, at the end of
the day, there are innocent people, UH families who are
caught in the middle of this. And again, people just
want to support their families and protect their their their

(08:27):
their loved ones, and they want the best for their
loved ones. And and that was the message, that is
the the the overall feeling I got from some of
the people I met today. Again, no matter what side
of this issue you're on, at the end of the day,
it's it's the humanity that's important, and so as as
people endure this very difficult time, they are hopeful that

(08:48):
perhaps diplomacy WI will win here and that these bombs
will stop falling and people here can live in peace.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
And that sounds like that is certainly the hope there.
Uh Marcus more live for us uh in Tel Aviv
from a bunker, Marcus, stay safe. We'll check back in
with you right after the break.
