Speaker 1 (00:19):
Welcome to Next Pod, your weekly look at Canadian prospects
with the One, the Only, Doug Great, the Wondrous James
GRASSI also me Dwayne. I'm Dwayne.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Hello. Hello, Just a quick one for you today. It's
Friday afternoon and I just caught off a conference call
with head coach Cindy Tie ahead of Canada kicking off
the twenty twenty four FIFA U twenty Women's World Cup
in Columbia on Saturday, so I wanted to get this
out as soon as possible. Canada was drawn into Group
B alongside France, Brazil and Fiji. They'll face France on

(01:00):
Saturday Tomorrow, August thirty first, at four pm, Fiji on Tuesday,
September third at nine pm. Both those matches will be
played in Medayen and Canada will then close the group
stage against Brazil on Friday, September sixth in Bogata at
nine pm. TSN will be broadcasting every match in the
competition on TSN Plus. All of Canada's matches will be

(01:23):
on air across the five main channels, and coverage is
set to get under way twelve minutes before those kickoff
times for the usual pre match lineups and anthems and
all that sort of jazz. The headline news when the
squab was announced last week was the inclusion of Olivia Smith,
who made that big move from Sporting Lisbon to Liverpool
in the off season. Olivia will lead an impressive host

(01:46):
of attacking talent for Canada. Amanda Allen of Orlando, Jennifer
Hernandez Gray of Vancouver, and seventeen year old Annabel Chipwoo
of NDC Ontario, to name a few of those weapons
that Cindy will have at her disposal are all part
of the squad. Chuku starred with the U seventeens earlier
this year and she's one of two seventeen year olds included,

(02:08):
the other being goalkeeper Noel Heading of NDC Ontario as well.
Noel also played a pretty vital role for Emma Humphries
earlier this year in CONCACAF. It's been a long journey
to this point for these women. You know. It was
way back in April of twenty twenty three when Canada
strolled through the qualification for the CONCACAF Championship. Come June

(02:30):
of that year, they defeated Costa Rica to take third
place and secure their birth in this World Cup. After
a group stage lost to the US in a semi
final defeat against Mexico, Coach Ti was able to get
the group together earlier this year for a camp in
Germany where they lost three one to the US and
four noil to Germany. Not ideal results in the middle

(02:50):
of a whirlwind week of training for the girls, but
it was a good experience and a chance to get
together ahead of competing in Colombia. On a personal note,
this was the first cycle that I've tracked this closely
and it's been a lot of fun following their progress
as a group over these two years. So I'm very
much looking forward to seeing what they can do at
the World Cup. And you know, as coach Ty will

(03:12):
tell you shortly, their aim is to advance from a
difficult group and then see what happens in the knockout stage.
This is the future of the national team. It won't
be long before the likes of Faith Fenwick Floria and
George Zoe Marcassini are the new names that are getting
called up to the senior side that we're all excited
to learn about and see take their first steps at

(03:33):
that level. So this like all youth international competitions, is
an excellent chance to preview what lies ahead for Canada
before throwing to the conversation with Tie. Rather than record
a separate outro'll just say goodbye now, thanks so much
for joining us Lamentably, we've been very inconsistent this year

(03:57):
when it comes to our releasing episodes, and that I
apologize and will endeavor to do better on that going forward.
It's been a very busy year in Canadian soccer and
things fall through the cracks again and my apologies for that.
I'm just going to run the questions and answers directly
from the call here, so apologies in advance. You will

(04:18):
notice some of the signature zoom noises throughout this audio,
and as always, thanks to Canada Soccer for setting up
the call with Coach Tie and allowing the use of
the audio. One side note, Cindy did have some really
interesting responses to some wider questions about the women's game.
With the advent of the Northern Super League, the decisions

(04:40):
that some of these girls are going to face between
continuing their school route are going professional and the need
for more chances to be tested at the youth level.
But we're going to keep it a little bit more
focused on the upcoming World Cup here. I didn't want
to steal too much of Michael McCall's thunder by including
those responses here, so be sure to check out the
upcoming episodes of AF as well. And we'll just get

(05:03):
started with Coach TI's response to a question from Michael
on the opposition that Canada will face in Columbia.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Oh, it's exciting for us recording on progress. Obviously, three
different opponents, very different opponents with France who we met
in the last World Cup, and then Fiji we don't
know too too much about because we've never seen them
before in competition, and then of course Brazil. So for us,
it's exciting to be tested against all three, which we

(05:32):
feel will be very very different, very different looks for
our kids.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
You've been able to keep a pretty consistent group throughout
this process. I was wondering if you could tell us
a bit about what you like about the character of
this group and how you see them coming together. We're
seeing some we've got some dangerous attacking options at your
disposal here.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, yeah, we definitely do. I mean, obviously this group
is and when you look back four years COVID, so
the impact them in their youth development, and when we
went into qualifying, we went with for the most part,
a younger group and one of the reasons for that
was they had contact time together, so they were in
their NDCs NDC environment, so that consistency of every day

(06:17):
of the same messaging. So when we brought them together,
they obviously did well in qualifying and qualified together and
trying to keep tabs on them through this year for
sure when they're in their NCAA environment some of them
or professional environments has been a bit challenging as it
is for everybody, but we're excited about them and the
first time that we've had the first full group together

(06:38):
since last year, although we did have an event in
Germany in May.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
You know, the armband is perhaps less important than it
used to be back in the past. Who's your leadership
group here? Who are you going to be looking to
to lead this side in Columbia. Yeah, no, great question.

Speaker 3 (06:55):
It definitely has gone in a i'd say a positive
direct in terms of leadership. Blake, we talked about all
of all of us being leaders and making sure that
we can lead ourselves so we can lead others. So
for us, we do have a leadership group before Faith
Fenwick in the back, Florienne in the middle, and Olivia

(07:16):
Smith and Amanda Allen, of course are two professional players.

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Getting Olivia involved was a bit of a coupa. I
think it surprised a couple of us, maybe just just
what it means to the group to have her involved.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Oh, I mean, it's just great. It's great to have
Olivia of course involved in any any way. I mean,
not only is she a great player, she's a great
person and she loves playing for a country. And uh,
she came in a few days ago to us and
obviously in her pre season at Liverpool and they released her,
which was wonderful to have her. Of course, she she

(07:53):
came in as very excited to see the girls, which
is a big, big piece, but also in training the
last couple of days you can just see the quality
that she has, so we're excited to have her.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Cindy, you mentioned the camp in Germany. I think we
spoke before that and you said you were looking forward
to giving the girls a chance to go up against
some Tier one opposition that I know. Those matches didn't
go the way you would have liked. But what did
you take away from that experience?

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Well, anytime you get a chance to do it, and
we obviously haven't had a chance to do it very often,
you're going to learn a lot. So I mean, honestly,
it was two games. I think it was three sessions,
two games over five or six days, and they have
proved very valuable to us because it gave us a
higher starting point.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
When we landed here.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
We've used a lot of learning from that in terms
of personnel obviously, but in the in the video that
we captured there and helping them learn and grow as
we moved towards France. So that piece has been very
important to us, There's no question about it. We'd like
to have more like that, of course to prepare like
anybody would, but will we'll use that and we have

(09:02):
used it in our preparations for the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
This World Cup is the pinnacle of a two long,
two year long cycle for you with this group, maybe
just what's your reflection on spending time with them? How
how are you going to remember this this cycle?

Speaker 3 (09:20):
Well, I mean it's been at it's been a great
group and we've had some group. We've had a few
repeating too, like Florian and Olivia were with us in
the last cycle. And they're also a group that's came in,
like I said, after COVID, so in terms of their
preparation they have they have a little bit more experienced
that way than then the group previous, so we really

(09:41):
appreciate that part. They're a great character group. They're competitive,
they really enjoy each other and that's been a big
piece too. So being able to keep that consistency hasn't
been important to us. And you can tell when when
everybody landed here they're really happy to be back together
and excited to experience this, which is really a once
in a lifetime thing for youth players.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
And last one for me maybe just what's your message
to the girls heading into these matches.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Oh? Yeah, we have a few objectives here, and I
think the biggest one for us. We talked about three
things and one of them is having gratitude and making
sure you appreciate where you're at and enjoying every moment.
So that's been a big piece for us, you know,
in terms of the results. We want to get better
every day is the other objective, and the last one,

(10:31):
of course, is around the results that we want to
advance out of the group stage. That's the first goal
for us, and of course after that we'll take it
one game at a time. But they're as prepared as
they can be. Right now, they're excited and ready to go,
so I can't wait for tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
Nicely, thank you and good luck.
