Speaker 1 (00:00):
I haven't listened to anything you've said in the last
twenty seconds.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Damn it, Trevor.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
We had a shit line.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Two friends who hate each other, rude talking science fiction.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
It has become this cultural phenomenon.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Along with some special guests.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
I appreciate it. Star Trek did to me, I would
love to have this book get banned. And that wasn't acting,
That wasn't real. Do you know what our YouTube channel
is absolutely not.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
No whin Scenario with Trevor and Dawn.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Okay, we're not doing that. Boom, Hi everyone, and welcome
to another episode of season three of No Win Scenario.
I'm Don Checkter, and I think Trevor. Trevor, are you nearby? Trevor? Wait,
I hear you look so thanks. Look I can't even
I love this thing.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
I can't even look at your eye. The eye thing is.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Not my eyes free Would you like to tell the
people listening to this podcast what is going on?
Speaker 1 (00:54):
You're wearing a pair of Apple Vision proglasses right now.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
I am this episode spun by Apple Vision Pro.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
This maybe episode is definitely not sponsored by Apple Vision Pro.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I love this thing, Trevor. Do I look ridiculous? Is
it is? Comfortable. It is awesome to watch movies this way.
Something that's popped up when I put my hands in
front of me. Ooh, it's so fun. Now hold on.
You came to my house the other week. Once we
came to us once. Yes, yes, my food, Yes, the
food was very good. My food didn't com as always.
(01:26):
But you came to my house and you tried on
this vision pro for the first time. What did you think?
Speaker 1 (01:31):
I genuinely thought it was amazing. I watched some of
Dune Part two, Dune Part two, and it was it
was incredible, I have to admit, And you know, choosing
my own movie theater background just just limitless possibilities. And
then you had me play what was that Marvel game
you had?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Like what if? It's amazing?
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Yeah, explain that Marvel's what if it it? I mean,
in short, it just taught me certain hand movements that
I could do to perform like defense attacks and offense
attacks and stuff like that, and it was real.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
It's very cool. It starts with, like, you know, a
character like pops up in your normal space and you
kind of get sucked into a comic book and then
you're actually doing things in the comic in three D.
It's pretty pretty neat. I love this thing for when
I travel on planes because I go places, Trevor, I
know you don't really house. It's amazing. I got you here, yes,
but I like on planes, like putting it on and
just like watching a movie and like a huge screen. Yeah,
(02:27):
so it's great. So highly recommend. I know no one's
really bought this recently, but I highly recommend. Apple. You're
ready for Trevor's Vision pro if you want to send
it over.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
But this is the future, it really is. It's a
pretty amazing piece of technology. I'll concede. I really liked it.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Speaking of amazing pieces of technology, I see you're wearing
our shirt. Put it on the No Win Scenario podcast
official prototype t shirt.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Yep. Yeah, it's a pro type all.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Right, No Win Scenario because the prototype. No one else
has a podcast. A little typo there if you listen
to our last episode. But I think, uh, I think
No Win Scenario merch has got a life to it.
The orders have been flooding in. They're yeah, do you
believe that?
Speaker 1 (03:19):
No? I don't believe that whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
No, but I'm excited that we're here again in our
no win scenario studio. Nothing has changed since last episode.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Nope, still looks the same. But it still looks good.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
It still looks good. I see a lot of pictures
of fabus people myself. Don't see you anywhere.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
No, no, no. I see one photo that stands out
is the photo of William Shatner. It's you, William Shatner,
and I believe Jared from Subway.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
This is wrong. That is one of my oldest friends,
ed Ed. I am so sorry he listens to this,
you know, Oh really yes he does. Oh okay, that
is horrible.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
I'm so sorry, Jared from Subway.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
I got Jenny Jenny john Sin's picture up there of
Cisco from uh you know, season two or season one
of our episode of podcast I don't remember now, But
are awesome painter up there of Cisco looking out at
his reflection.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Yeah, it's so awesome that you didn't mention what TV show?
That's from Deep Space Night.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I love Deep Space Night. We got a lot of
Deep Space nine references here. We've got Star Trek, Babylon five,
little Easter eggs and product placement something called ascendants. Yeah,
what have you created up here?
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Absolutely nothing?
Speaker 2 (04:34):
And everyone is laughing because they all know that Trevor
creates nothing but sadness.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
He's not wrong.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Do you have anything? Are you? Are you miming my words?
Like it looks like you were like saying the words
as if I had lines, and you were like reading
my part of the script. There is no script here,
but his lips were like as I was talking, was
it just an old person quiver? I'm confused.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
That is that what your mind?
Speaker 2 (05:01):
He's like, that's what it looked like.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, yeah, no, no nothing.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Do you have anything to look forward to in life?
Speaker 1 (05:09):
You know? Based on the first episode, I was looking
forward to that show.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Paradise, Ah Paradise.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Based on the second episode, I'm knowing.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
I gotta say former Dawn turn I editor on that show,
and she's doing a fabulous job. Alice on who good
job she was? This is us editor Paradise. I'm looking
forward to watching it on my vision pro on the
Plan to Las Vegas because I go places Trevor.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
I bailed on it after the second episode. Really wasn't
for me.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Why is that?
Speaker 1 (05:40):
I thought it got a little too no spoilers place hokey, hokey, interesting, interesting.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
I heard it was a good sort of setup.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
First episode has an amazing setup. Okay, it has an
amazing setup. And then I don't know. I should probably
give it a couple more episodes, but I don't want to.
I've moved on to other things.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Trevor. Yeah, Trevor, Trevor. We have a special guest, A
special surprise guest.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
A special guest.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yes for Don's tangent? Is that one? Ready? We're gonna
set up the studio a little different and bring in
our special guest. So everyone hanged type. But before we do,
I think we all need to see Trevor's face behind
this vision pro. This is the most expensive thing Trevor
has ever touched.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
This thing is thick with your face.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Grease put it on? He's slowly, slowly.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
That couldn't be creepier. What do you put it on?
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Well? For people listening, he's slowly, ever so gently, putting
on the vision pro on his very large forehead and hat.
Is that how I look? Do I look that ridiculous
wearing it?
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Nah?
Speaker 1 (06:45):
Look worse?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
You look good? This is an improvement for you. Yeah?
What do you see?
Speaker 1 (06:49):
I see absolutely nothing?
Speaker 2 (06:52):
You did figure that out? Yeah? I figured that out.
Everyone in the studio. Just take a picture of this
guy like this. This is gonna be his new maybe
a new Lincoln profile.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
There you go, these are my eyes.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Okay, Trevor, we'll be back with our special guest, a tight.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
Well, we'll be back. I don't know where the camera is.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
But we'll be not funny when you do it. We'll
be back, not funny when you do it.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
I'm hilarious.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
It's time for the No Win Scenario. Fun fact. Every
episode of No Win Scenario is scientifically designed to confuse
at least one listener, usually Trevor.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Welcome back, everyone, and we are back with Don's tangent.
That is gonna be taken over by one of, if
not the biggest No Win Scenario podcast fan, Sam, super fan, Sam.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Definitely our biggest fan. He's listened to the podcast so much.
That's how we got the Whole Food Sausage endorsement. That's
how we have able to accumulate ten dollars in ad revenue.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Ten dollars and fifty one cents as of earlier earlier too.
And he's really the audience that we do this for. Sam.
Speaker 4 (08:03):
How old are you seven and a half?
Speaker 2 (08:05):
Seven and a half, ladies, and gentlemen, and you were
here live. Well you're live. Are you alive? Yes, you're
live in our studio to take over Don's tangent. Don's
tangent is now Sammy's tangent.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
Can you go back and ask him his age again?
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Sam how old are you?
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Seven and a half?
Speaker 1 (08:25):
No, I didn't have anything to say for some reason.
I was shaking my head and I was shaking my
head at something that you said. But it looked like
I was shaking my head at the kids' day. He
was seven and a half.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
You made me you did a retake for that. Yeah. Well,
now it's all going in. Okay, so this is behind
the scenes and no in scenario podcast, Trevor has a
comment and we just ignore it. Don's tangent, Don Tangent.
All right, Sammy, I know you have some questions for
Trevor today. I do take it away, sir Trevor.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
First question? How wait?
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Wait?
Speaker 1 (08:53):
What is this?
Speaker 2 (08:54):
What he's got questions for you?
Speaker 1 (08:56):
You have questions for me?
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yes, don't interrupt our fans.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Okay, I'm not prepared for this, but okay, go go go.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
I guess how fun is the podcast?
Speaker 1 (09:08):
How fun is the podcast?
Speaker 2 (09:11):
For me? He has no fun for me. Yes, you, it.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Can be fun sometimes.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Let me tell you this.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
It's fun when Don isn't speaking or is it contributing
in any way whatsoever, Rude. It's really fun when the
guest is listening or talking to me and is not
addressing Don whatsoever. That is when the show is fun.
The show is fun when I talk because I bring
(09:40):
the intelligence.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Sam, Sam, you can cut him off a bit, laugh
at him, Sam, No, you can laugh at him, you
just don't laugh with him. Oh, who do you have
next to you? Right here? You have a little panda bear? Hello,
little panda bear. That's so cute? Okay? Question number two
from Sam seven and a half year old Sam two
for five year old Trevor, five year old.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Who was your favorite guest?
Speaker 1 (10:08):
My favorite guest was an author named Derek Tyler Attiko.
He did the autobiography of Captain Cisco. I also liked
the artist and painter Jenny Johnson. I also liked the
author David Mack, who wrote the book on seven of nine. Yeah,
(10:30):
and I forget his name, but there was there was
a guest who did TV screen who did computer scrall.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Hold on Sammy probably knows who did playback supervisor star
Trek Nemesis. I think it's episode three, season one.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
I think it is.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
Yeah, do you remember who was his name?
Speaker 4 (10:52):
Todd A Marks?
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Todd a mars a seven and a half year old
knows more podcast lower than Trevor.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
And I was there and you were there.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
That was nine blowing mar We love Todd Marks. You
forgot I'm not years. I understand. I'm not talking about
Todd bark like. That was amazing. That was amazing. Hey, Sam,
seven and a half year old Sam, who was in
our deep Space nine episodes? Do you remember.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Which one?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Which one? He knows? What was your favorite? Or what
do you like? Oh?
Speaker 4 (11:21):
What did I like about which one?
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Oh? Well about when we had the reunion? Oh do
you remember who was on the guest?
Speaker 4 (11:30):
Oh? Yeah, I don't remember? Four people?
Speaker 2 (11:33):
There were four people.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
I'm blown away, that's all keep going.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
One of them was Toddy Slayton Say and our friend
Morselli Morselli, Mark Lunchy, Mark lu and Kathy Debano.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Look at that. Trevor's mouth is wide open in disbelief,
because Trevor just blacks out every every interview. He just
doesn't remember what happened.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
I mean, you're not wrong that young.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Man listens to the podcast every night, every night. That's
that is absolutely amazing, amazing. Yeah, do you have any
questions about the podcast for Trevor?
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Oh? Yeah? What is your favorite part about the podcast?
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Trevor's tangent?
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Do you like Trevor's tangent a little? A little? I
like Don's tangent much better.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
There's only there's only been one Don's tangent?
Speaker 2 (12:25):
What what episode was that? I don't even know? What
was that?
Speaker 1 (12:28):
I don't know?
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Was that Dune I forgot?
Speaker 1 (12:30):
I forgot about it?
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Episode two seven? What is episode two o seven?
Speaker 4 (12:36):
I like the very end. Yeah, when you said in
the one way he said children please go to bed?
Speaker 2 (12:44):
That was aimed at you.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
Probably I'm so ashamed of myself. This kid is amazing.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Dam I mean, do you have a favorite episode?
Speaker 1 (12:55):
Now?
Speaker 2 (12:55):
Okay, you don't? You love them all or you hate
them all?
Speaker 4 (12:58):
I love them all?
Speaker 2 (12:59):
I love it? And what do we love more than
the podcast? What do we love more than the podcast?
What do we love that's in the podcast? What do
we always have to listen to the ads? All?
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Right?
Speaker 2 (13:14):
Next question?
Speaker 4 (13:16):
Why do you have a travers change, and.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
To get Dawn to stop talking about Deep Space nine
and babel On five and to to get things notice
that are outside of science fiction. You know, I watch
a lot of foreign films. I watch a lot of
independent films. I know that they don't necessarily have anything
to do with science fiction. But I want our audience
(13:41):
as little as our audiences right now, I want them
to know that there's you know, there's more. There's more
to it than just Babbelon five and Deep Space nine,
not the Niguans bub and five.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Well, actually, Sam has something in common. He watches Strange
New Worlds and he's watched a few episode. What do
you think of Strange Worlds one and one and a
half episodes? You watched the musical one.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Right, Yeah, what did you think?
Speaker 4 (14:08):
I liked it.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
It's the best Star Trek show since TNG. That's what
I think.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Generation Okay, one more question, Sam, No, two more questions.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
More questions. Where did you used to record?
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Oh, when we were all on zoom and just yeah,
we used to record all on zoom. I would record
out of my apartment. Don would record out of the
office usually all the time, all the time. Yeah, he
would record out of his office. I would record out
of my home office, you know, with my needy cat,
(14:43):
with my needy Yeah, with my cat jumping all over
me and making noise.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
All right, Sam, Next question, Last question, last question.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
When did you start recording with Don Gosh?
Speaker 2 (14:57):
I really don't know, mister down to you.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
I think it was like twenty twenty food.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
I think you're right, twenty twenty three, twenty three, Yeah, okay,
is it the fall? It was probably the fall of twenty.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Four three, twenty twenty three. We oh, I know specifically
what it was during the strike. It was during this
actor strike. Yeah, that we started because we were able
to get a lot of guests.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Yeah. Do you remember our first episode who our guest
was David Blast, David Blast, production designer. Yes, our track
per card and our second guest Liz klokoshk Liz Laklask
look at this seven a half year old, that's right.
And then we had Todd Marks. As we talked about embarrassing,
we cover all our guests so far, I think so, No,
not all of them, not all of them. What was
(15:38):
your favorite episode of like Red Face? This is so
Trevor is embarrassed that this young man knows more about
the podcast than he does. But Sam, before we let
you go, what was your favorite episode?
Speaker 4 (15:51):
I lady told you I don't have a favorite.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
What do you listen to the most? Though? He got
kind of meme there, Well, clearly you don't listen to them.
Do you like Doom Part one, Doom Part two, Part two?
Speaker 4 (16:09):
It's not Doom Part one, Doom Dum part two part one?
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Sorry, you're right? Do you like season episode? Those episodes?
I forgot part about those? Ryan, Brian Tam Right, we're
gonna see him soon, Brian Tam not John Ham, Brian Tam. Okay,
but my.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
Favorite episode of the podcast is episode two o seven,
two oh seven.
Speaker 2 (16:34):
Trevor, do you know what episode two O seven is?
Speaker 1 (16:35):
Absolutely not?
Speaker 2 (16:37):
Sam, tell Trevor what episode two o seven is like?
Speaker 4 (16:42):
The intro was very very short, okay, Trevor Tangent.
Speaker 2 (16:47):
Thank god.
Speaker 1 (16:49):
You liked it because there was no Trevors.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
No, no, no. The guest will my favorite part?
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Oh? Who was the guest?
Speaker 4 (16:55):
There? Four?
Speaker 2 (16:56):
There were four?
Speaker 4 (16:57):
Four.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
This was the Deep Space nine.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Read simer with Todd Slayton and Kathy de Bono and
blah blah blah blah blah, blah Rude, Robin Morseally, Robin Morsellly.
Speaker 4 (17:12):
Toddy Schlayton, Mark Lunchy and Kathy DeBono.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Wow. And so Sam, before we let you go, what
what do you think you've learned from listening to the
No Win Scenario podcast?
Speaker 4 (17:24):
More sci fi?
Speaker 2 (17:26):
More sci fi everyone? If you've learned nothing else, you've
just learned more sci fi from me and Trevor and
me and I do think that Sam's coming for your job, Trevor,
my job? What job?
Speaker 1 (17:41):
Don't don't come for my job, Sam, take a completely
different route.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
Please listen. You're happy Trevor. When we get that check
in the mail, were in the my bank account. By
the way, always make sure it goes to your bank
account first. That's what I would like to let you know. Right,
goes to your piggy bank first, and then you give
Trevor the that's right over.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
Actually piggy banks full? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Is your time to deposit it or invest it?
Speaker 2 (18:07):
That's right? Is your piggy bank full?
Speaker 4 (18:08):
Triumph?
Speaker 1 (18:10):
My piggy bang's very empty?
Speaker 2 (18:13):
All right? Sam? Any last words before you go?
Speaker 4 (18:15):
Now?
Speaker 2 (18:16):
You want to say and stay tuned for the commercials, Sure,
go for it. Say tell everyone to stay tuned for
the commercials they do for the commosials. Thanks for joining us, Sam,
Thanks for joining us, Sam, it was a lot of fun.
Will you come back and do this one day?
Speaker 4 (18:30):
Maybe?
Speaker 3 (18:33):
Did you know Don has a favorite episode of Star
Trek Deep Space nine. Trevor has a favorite pizza topping.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
All right, and welcome back, Trevor. I want to go
back to our special guest for a moment. I want
to say thank you, thank you for allowing me to
bring in our super fan Sam to the studio. I
think he's getting for your job. I think he knows
more than you. How did that make you feel?
Speaker 1 (19:00):
I genuinely felt ashamed.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
I'm not kidding. I genuinely felt as shaped he is
he because.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
He's blew me out of the water. He knew, he
knew every detail about every episode. I've forgotten most of
the episodes. I forget most things within twenty four hours.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
I forgot to take off that weird mass effect sweatshirt
over you. You're like hiding your no and scenario T shirt.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
You forgot to turn up the heat in the studio cold.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Give this guy a blanket. Huh, This old man needs
a blank.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
You need a blanky.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Well, guess what.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
Guess what?
Speaker 2 (19:36):
We should have him on again one day. I think
I'd love to have Sam on, but we should have
more guests on. What do you think, more listeners? I
think the listeners. Let's let's open our doors, open these
studio doors to our listeners and bring them in.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
He doesn't Sam have a sister? Would she like to
come on?
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Oh? She tried, She tried. She resumed with you once
a couple of years ago, but it went poorly for you.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
But we should have her back.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
We should definitely have her back. Yeah, I think absolutely
we should bring it, bring in Zoe. But now I
want to talk about it. Is the twentieth twentieth anniversary.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Of the twenty first as of last fall twentieth.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
At the end of the twentieth and a half Lost. Yeah,
you wanted me to bring that up for some strange reason.
You tell I love Lost? You do?
Speaker 1 (20:17):
Yes? I love it. I know a lot of people
say it has flaws. Does I know a lot of
people detest the ending? I love the ending?
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Do you?
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (20:30):
I do? Think? Explain the ending to us well, I
think the show to us follows.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
There is a theme that's introduced in the beginning of
the show. Are you a man of science or you're
a man of faith? And I think the show ends
on the side of man of faith. Now, I am
not a religious person and don't endorse any religion whatsoever. However,
I've always thought of Loss as a character piece. I'm
(20:59):
not saying that the wasn't important, but I found the
plot to be secondary to these characters. I enjoyed these
characters very very very much. Shut up and let me finish.
And I I think jj Abrams directed one hell of
a pilot. I think that pilot episode is one of
(21:20):
the great pilots. And then David Lindelof and I'm forgetting
the other guys.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
Then once again Trevor has not done his homework. Kids.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
They did a great job with the rest of the show. Yes,
there were some bumps along the way, but the cast
is great, characters are great.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
The characters are great. I agree with fan and it
was I I watched it sort of after it sort
of was on for a few years. But it was
a little bit messy, Like these people land on this crash,
land on an island. Great, it's a survival story. Then
there's this guy in a bunker who's gotta press some
button for some strange reason. Then there's a smoke monster.
Then there's these other people, and there are these all
these random things that people if you you know, like
(22:02):
they were flash forwards, flash sides, all those things. That's great.
You expect when you're investing, what seven seasons of a show,
that at some point most of it, not all of it,
most of it will make sense of be interconnected somehow.
And that wasn't the case. I mean, people were expecting
the last season to like explain and show how these
things were connected or not. Didn't really happen. Yeah, but
that wasn't But that wasn't the criticism though. The criticism
(22:24):
it was that it was like this science fiction fantasy
show that ended with this like religious tilt to it,
that that wait a second, wait a second, don't talk,
don't talk. That it wasn't the only show around the
turn of the century or early was it early two thousand? Yeah,
so like between like ninety I thaid the early two
(22:45):
thousands a bunch of shows kind of that were science fiction,
let's just call it for now. They instead of ending
in the realm of the worlds that they had created, yeah,
they sort of like couldn't figure out how to end
and went super religious. So I'll give you an example.
I love Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica. I'm also I'm mostly
(23:06):
fine with the ending.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
We watched the finale together, did we don't remember?
Speaker 2 (23:09):
I was a child, you were an old man. It
was sketchy, I don't know. Okay, no recollection of that.
Did you like it? Yes? Okay, but that had a
very sort of religious tilt as well, and a lot
of people were upset by that. Really. Oh absolutely, so
it was the same thing love I mean I loved it. Yeah,
I enjoyed it. You know, it wasn't perfect. It's not
never going to be an ending for a show that's
going to be perfect. Outside of Babylon Five, the absolute
(23:31):
best ending for a show ever, I'm telling you, Sopranos
is up there, but sci fi Bablon five ends up perfectly.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
The Wires The Wires pretty good, and The Americans Has Americans.
Speaker 2 (23:42):
Is pretty good. But a few shows go on for
season after season and wrap up everything. And so I
think the criticism of early two thousand shows was that
so many of them relied on a religious escape to
explain stuff that did quite makes sense. And I think
Lost never had a plan going in. And that's the
problem with J. J. Abrams, right, he loves the mystery box,
he loves mystery, he loves oh, what's that? What's that?
(24:04):
And then he never really resolves it, so it was
never conceived of as having explanations. And that's pretty frustrating
when you're watching a show for years and years and years.
So let alone a couple of Star Wars movies.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
I think JJ Abrams directed the pilot, executive produced it,
and then wasn't that much involved from it was mostly
David Wendeloff and that other they have figured it out show.
I think what happened is that which happened to a
lot of shows, especially the X Files, is that there
was a plan, but the plan was supposed to be
(24:37):
executed over so many seasons, but the demands of the
network are like, oh no, no, no, no no, You're
going to go on for four more seasons, three more seasons,
two more seasons, and therefore they've got to scramble to
extend the story to maybe make changes, and it ruins
(24:57):
the plan. I mean, I definitely think I think with
X Files.
Speaker 2 (25:01):
But no X Files. That's fine. I mean, that was
a good episodic show for the most part. It would
have been nice to have a more coherent story throughout.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
Oh there was it was Mulder's sister, Yeah, you know,
but it was it.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Was light touch, I think. But going back to JJ
Abrams Lost, at least the setup for Lost, you know,
you're talking about like the remake of and not the remake,
but the new start of the new Star Wars. It's
not that new anymore, but the Force awakens, no real
plan going from there. It deviated with the Last Jedi.
But then when when Abrams came back, he had just
ignored the last Jedi and did some you know, whole
(25:31):
storyline that seemed to come out of nowhere for a
lot of people. And I think that's indicative of a
lot of his work. I mean, he he gives a
Ted talk that I showed in my class when I
when I teach this about mystery boxes and how they're
great and the mystery is so exciting and going to
a movie theater everything's you know, what's going to happen,
What's going to happen? And he does this bit in
his Ted talk where he brings out this box he
(25:53):
got as a kid, a magician's box. That's his surprise
mysteries inside like I do twenty dollars savings or something.
He's never opened it because the surprise of what the
mystery what's inside this magic box is so enticing to him.
He wants to keep that mystery intact.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
And what does it do? Does it? Like like it
spurs his imagination?
Speaker 2 (26:12):
I guess, so what could be in it? But that's
the problem is when he writes or directs movies, you know,
he's so in love with the mystery that he doesn't
seem to think about the composion, the payoff that when
we finally get to that point where there should be payoff,
it's just not there. Yeah, And I think that's what
happened with Star Wars. It was what happened with like,
you know, the Star Treks that he did a little bit, well,
(26:33):
not the first one. The first one was pretty good,
but con oh no, I mean Into Darkness was a disaster.
So it's because the mystery, Oh, this isn't gonna be
con this is John Harrison. And then when when cumber
Patch what's his.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Name, Benedict Cumberbatch cumber Patch.
Speaker 2 (26:50):
Umber Batch says, you know, my name is con you know,
with his voice, it's the whole audience when I saw
it in the theater was like a groan because like
it didn't matter, because as didn't matter for those characters
in that story, right, and it was trying to be
such a mystery and withheld. So I think there's a
lot of problems with that. So it's it's interesting that
you liked how Lost developed because it just felt like
(27:11):
they were just random things being thrown into it. Just
I agree in audience intact, I agree, I.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
But I think Lost took huge risks. It was very
influential of you know, of you know, of its time.
It was total watercooler television, Like you watched it and
then the next day at work or the next day
with your friends, you've talked about it for fifteen minutes,
half an hour, an hour.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
It was.
Speaker 1 (27:39):
It was just on that line between talking about a
show on the internet and talking about it in person,
like both things were going on. Now most of the
time you're just discussing shows on the internet. Lost had
a social aspect to it and everybody that was watching it,
you know, there are people that loved the people that
(28:01):
hated it, but they were still watching it.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
What's interesting because the people it happened around Game of Thrones,
the original run of Game of Thrones, for people would
watch it and talk about it each week.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
So that was a water cooler show, right right, And
I think a lot of people if that has a
rotten ending.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
Let's not talk about that in this episode. But it
did make sense, I will say, because if you go
back and rewatch a show, she she Denarius is constantly
saying I'm gonna burn them down and all that stuff,
So it does track. It wasn't it really was. It
was rushed and we're not everyone. Can it.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Sellout Crazy Lady garbage?
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Yes, but it was a water cooler show, Yes it was,
and there haven't been Has there been one since? Because
I know I have a colleague who said, I don't
think there's ever going to be one like that because
of streaming and things like that. I don't know. I
mean people like when people just when streaming services just
dump a whole season and watch six episodes or ten episodes.
You know, it's not it's rare that there's a once
(28:58):
a week kind of show.
Speaker 1 (29:00):
Now, you know it might not be a it's not
science fiction or fantasy related, and it might not ever
be at the level of Lost or Game of Thrones.
But there's a TV show out right now on Netflix.
It's a four episode mini series that everybody I know
is talking about. Have you heard about this show called Adolescence?
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Yes? Yes, one, take one take episodes.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Absolutely, And I'm I'm just saying again, not trying to
get off on a tangent, but I haven't run into
this many people talking about a television show all.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
I agree, I agree it is.
Speaker 1 (29:34):
It has become this cultural phenomenon like worldwide, not just
here but in England and you know all these other countries.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
And you know what, I'm gonna watch Adolescence. You know
how I'm gonna watch it? How on my vision pro
sing a first class on my way to my next trip.
