Speaker 1 (00:08):
Start spreading the new, new, new New. We interrupt our
program to bring you this important message, New York. I
love you, I love New York. What's going on? People?
(00:38):
Welcome back to the Off the Ball podcast with me
your host, Chris Lebron. It's been a minute, it's been
a minute. Haven't been able to do a podcast for
almost a few months, but I'm back at it. We're
gonna make time. A lot of stuff going on in
the world and basketball, so let's dive right into it. Man.
(00:59):
NBA draft lottery was a surprising, right and somehow, some way,
the NBA god said, you know what, Nico, We're gonna
give you one. We're gonna give you one. You don't
give up on Luca. We're gonna bless you. We're gonna
bless you, and we're going to give you the number
(01:20):
one pick. And it's absolutely crazy. And as you see
there the odds, the draft order, and it was just
absolutely shocking that they wound up with the number one
pick in the draft. And as you see, the Spurs
(01:40):
follow up a two seventy six ers, Hornets, Jazz and
the Wizards obviously not feeling not feeling blessed, along with
the Pelicans, the Nets, those are probably the biggest losers.
Then you got the Raptors, Rockets, Blazers, Bulls, Hawks, and
the Spurs back at it with uh closing out the
(02:03):
NBA lottery, and it was absolutely it was, man, it
was intense. Like I wasn't even I'm not even you know,
my team's went away from going to the Eastern Conference finals.
So you know, it wasn't really uh, you know, for
the it felt good to not actually uh be stressed out.
But you know, I was with I was at work,
(02:24):
and I was with the Spurs fan, Spurs buddy of mine,
to work, and you know he's you know, he's he's
he's sweating it out and not I'm thinking about, you know,
what if the Spurs get the number one pick, what
if the you know, the Wizards. Honestly, the MAVs weren't
even I never even thought about that. I never even
(02:44):
thought about the MAVs getting the number one pick, to
be honest, you know, think about every other team, but
the mass I'm like, there's no way, there's no way
they're gonna they're gonna give them the number one pick. Right,
That's not gonna happen, right, we're not gonna. We're not gonna,
They're not gonna. Gods aren't gonna bless the Mavericks. After
the whole Lucas stuff, did we know the NBA gods
(03:09):
blessed them. NBA gods blessed them, and they gave him
the number one pick. It was absolutely absolutely insane, in
insane that it was able to happen. Spurs, Hawks, bull
And it's crazy because from what I heard from when
we were told that the Spur, the Bulls, and the
(03:30):
MAVs were tied, right, I think that was the case.
They were tied and it came down to a flip
of a coin and that's how the MAVs essentially got
the number one pick. Could have been the Bulls, but
the Bulls always decide to love being five hundred, love
playing five hundred ball. So that was that was something interesting.
(03:50):
But then like if Nets, the Pelicans, the Wizards of Jazz,
the Hornets, more of the Jazz, Wizards, Pelicans, Nets, you
got to be, uh, can't be feeling good? You know,
the Jazz letter, the worst team in the NBA now
blessed the Wizards. You gotta feel for them. You absolutely
gotta feel from but uh, it was it was wild, man,
(04:14):
it was wild just to think that. I mean, Nico
has been absolutely has been absolutely killed, right, He's been
getting killed, ran through the mud, and it saved them.
It's just crazy and it's in it's you just can't
believe that this happened. He just can't believe it happened.
And but what was a one point chance of getting
(04:37):
the number one pick? And man, that's the definition of
winning the lottery, you know, you know you got to
be in to win it. And you know they almost
think about it. They almost made the playoffs. You know,
they were playing teams, so they you know, they there
was a chance that they wouldn't have This is an afterthought,
so you know they get blessed. So they're gonna there.
(04:58):
There's not a Now you people talking about you know
what if they trade No, they're not trading Eco. It's
not that. I mean, you know, he may he may
maybe people may think he's stupid, but I don't know
if he's just stupid. So I doubt they trade Cooper flag.
Now I can see like an anti Davis them flipping
him and just being like, yo, let's just go the
youth movement, I could see that happening. I think they
(05:21):
can get a lot for Anti Davis, but Cooper Flag
will be a Dallas Maverick. You know. Uh that's a
pretty confident in that. So but then you know, the
Spurs again get blessed. I mean, yeah, they didn't, they
didn't get the number one pick, but they still got
a hell of a player. They're going to get a
hell of a player potentially, and in uh in Dylan Harper,
(05:46):
you know, if they you know, obviously we know the
rumors about you know, uh Giannis, So that's something that
could be used in a trade package potentially. You know,
so because they you know, they do have Castle, they
do have Deer and Fox. You know, I would probably
expect them to try to bring back is Chris Paul
(06:07):
on the on the roster next year. I'm not sure
if he's a figure or not. But you know, so
there's actually a little log jam for them, you know,
so I could see them even potentially trading down, you know,
to uh maybe get some more assets to maybe make
that yiannistink potentially happen. So but uh, you know, Philadelphia
gets the third pick. You know, they get a top
(06:30):
four pick. Their pick what's top five or six protected,
So they wound up being a winner today. Uh for me,
for sure, Charlotte gets four obviously, Utah's at five, and
you know they haven't they're gonna have an They're probably
gonna get another guy that's going to be a part
(06:50):
of that core. There's just no true blue Chippers, you know.
So that that's why they really needed to at least
get top two. Uh. But you know that's why it's
the lottery. It's it's the crab shoot. You know, the
Wizards again fall so but you know, I think the
Wizards are I've always tried to clown the Wizards because
(07:15):
I always felt like they've they've just I don't know,
it's just been bad. Like they're they're definitely one of
the worst organizations in sports. There's just not a lot
of success, you know. Uh so Uh, but they're they're
in a good spot even with the six pick. I
know it's not ideal, but I feel like they're in
a they're on the up. You know. Will Dawkins is uh.
(07:37):
I think he's uh, you know, he's from Okay. See,
you think he'll do some good things. And I think
they're still heading in the in the right direction. So
not ideal. Obviously, you would love to have got Cooper
or at least still in Harper, still in Harper, you know,
but uh, you know, they still can get a solid player.
Republicans get seven. Uh, they're gonna be in a tough spot.
Man Brooklyn gets eight. You know, that's just another you know,
(08:03):
obviously not what they expected, but still can get a
good player. And then listen, there's there's Gian's rumors too
with them, you know, same thing with the Raptors too,
another piece, you know, with that ninth pick. They're also
in Gianni's rumors too. The Rockets get ten, Portland traivel
Lazers too. Well, like I think they were like a
ping pong bowl away from getting number one pick. Obviously
(08:26):
the bowls are at twelve. They were, you know, loser
in this because they were so close to getting number
one potentially. And then saying, I mean, uh, Atlanta's thirteen.
They got that from the Sacramento Kings, and then the
Spurs get their pick from Atlanta. What did Atlanta get
that pick? Their pick? Oh, just said the Sacramento So
(08:47):
that that rounds out the fort the lottery. So it
was an interesting day. Mavericks get the number one pick,
and it's crazy that you know, comes out real quick.
They're not training number one pick kind of figured that you, yes,
we can't do that twice in a you know, you
can't trade a generational player then trade a potential generational player.
You just that's just that of that'll get you fired,
(09:10):
that'll get you fired. But just think about it, Just
think about this. You know, there's not a lot of
people who can get like a Mulligan Ah, you know,
uh I grew you know, you don't get this type
of breaks, you know, and for for Dallas, you know,
(09:35):
the Luca. It's one thing to trade Luca, but man,
just that the economical you know, ramifications from that were
just massive. And this kind of gets people to be like, Okay,
you traded our guy. You traded our you know, that
was our Dirk Novitzky. You know that was going to
be our forever player, but you traded him and you
lost us. But this gives and this also, but Nico
(10:00):
doesn't get a passers because this is honestly just pure luck,
right this Nickel didn't didn't do anything, you know, to
make this happen. It's just literally you just luck, like
it's just pure luck. And I know there's a lot
of people thinking it's a fix. You know, it's it's
kind of hard work that the NBA a lot or
it used to be one of the conspiracy theory guys.
But it is hard to rig it. Maybe they can,
(10:21):
but you know, just hearing many people talk about the
process and it's pretty hard to rig it. But uh,
it's you know, you don't get an opportunity to get
a like a restart in this way to be like,
all right, we traded our best generational player, Luca you
know all NBA five times with them, you know, just
went to the finals and you know, you trade them
(10:45):
and then you're kind of stuck and Kyrie gets hurt
and ads didn't you know, who's been dealing with injuries
and get a get blessed with the number one pick
and it's not like it was last year's and you
know where if you have got the number one, like
you know, good players, you know Saw, you know, Castle Cooper,
(11:05):
flag is different. You know, even if they got too
to get they would have gotten Dylan Harper. I would
have been like, wow, I mean that's that's a good piece.
But to get Cooper Flag and box Office too. That's
massive because you just they took a pretty big financial
hit and now you can maybe recoup some of that.
(11:25):
So I mean, it's just crazy how they get they
got it. Like I said, I didn't even think about
Dallas in the in the maybe they can get the
number one pick, And I think I was listening to
uh some showing the value on the value and they
were talking about when guy was talking about, you know, Dallas,
(11:46):
and it's like, I hope they don't get it because
you don't want them to to to get blessed after
what they did with the whole Lucas stuff. But I
still never it never studid me like maybe Dallas can
get I was just like, you know, I just don't
think they're to get it. But they got them one pick,
so good for them, you know, and let's see how
(12:06):
they build this team, you know, because now they have
a great piece and that's gonna get the the building back,
you know, back going. And you know, obviously Kyrie is
going to miss significant time and you know, but you
still got a d there. You still got Derek Lively.
So you've got some some some potential big pieces like
(12:28):
I said, if I'm them, I may consider trading Anthony
Davis and let's go with the full young. You know,
you got Derek Lively there. You know, you've got some
pieces teams that want so you can get some significant
you know, you can get some assets. So Dallas. It's crazy, man,
It's crazy. They went from you know, maybe you know
(12:49):
the you know, not having such a bright future to
know the future might be bright. You know, Nicholas Love defensing,
he might get the best defender in the drafts. Nco Loke,
you know, must be thrilled because that's a huge monkey
office back is. You know, I generally did feel bad
for him, you know what he probably had to deal with,
(13:11):
you know, just being in the public and you know
probably what he's been told and you know, the death
threats and all that nonsense. You know, so as a
as a human being, you know, I'm happy in that sense.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
That he's got that off of him, because that's a
huge burden I have and everything with all the nasties
that came after the Lucas stuff, which.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
It should never get to that level of nasty. But
you know, definitely criticism, but not to the level that
he probably had to deal with this obviously gives him
a little bit of break and now we see how
he builds. Yeah, the lotteries definitely one of the more
one of the more crazier NBA lotteries that we've seen. So,
you know, but uh, as we get to that, we
(13:59):
are this is Wednesday, and you know, the Knicks are
I went away from heading to the Eastern Conference finals
and a lot of things have happened. You know, Fortunately,
Jason Tatum will not be playing for the rest of
the playoffs. He tore his achilles and it's unfortunate, man.
(14:22):
It just the achilles. That's a that's a massive, massive,
you know, injury at the timetable is a year to
get back and we've seen a few achilles injuries this
season and it's unfortunate. It really is unfortunate. So you feel,
(14:43):
you feel, I know, it's you know, obviously it's an
intense rivalry New York and Boston, but you feel you
feel for you don't you don't ever want to see players,
great players get hurt like that, and you know it's unfortunate,
but you know, it's just it's a fortunate part of
the game. And he was having a really good game too.
Now they're they're down three to one in Boston, you know,
(15:06):
at back at TD. They're back at TD, and you know, ah,
they could still win. They could still win. They still
have the horses, like just because I know JT not
being there obviously massive, that's their best player. But they
still I wouldn't be shocked if they win this game
(15:26):
just off pure adrenaline and no just emotion, you know.
So but uh, but on the other end, I remember
I think, uh, I don't know if it was Tim Bond,
Tamps or whatever or someone said they were at the
lot in the locker room after, you know, after game five,
and uh, they said that they didn't feel they didn't
(15:48):
feel it felt like it was like a funeral, like
it was just it was everyone's down. And it's just
obviously you lose Tatum and that's just massive, right, It's
it's a massive blow to lose your best player. So
that's significant of an injury. It's one thing if he's
out because you know, spraying high ankle spraying or you know,
(16:12):
a ligament tear a slightly you know, if that's something
you can live with, right, you'd be like a but
the Achilles that that could be career altering, that could
be corel Now we've seen guys come back from it.
But that's that's massive. I mean, Dame, we saw Dame
go down with it, and you know he's older, Dame
Dames with in his mid thirties. So but you know,
(16:36):
it's tough. That's tough, and that means we won't see
Tatum for maybe the whole season or maybe until the
end of the year. But you know, the New York
Knicks are a win away from heading to the first
Eastern Conference Finals since two thousand when they played Indiana
and since then only them, the Wizards, and the Hornets
in the Eastern Conference. They're the three only three teams
(16:59):
that have not made it to the Eastern Conference since
the last time the Knicks made it. So I want
to get that nastiest. I don't never want to be
in a uh. I never want to be in a
category with the Wizards or the shot Hornets because that
means it's nasty. You know, Hopefully we can you know,
uh end that, you know, streak the twenty five year
(17:23):
drought of not being in the Eastern Conference finals and
get back and get back there. But uh, we got.
We got that, you know, so that's that's gonna be pivotal.
You know. Obviously Jayden Brunson living up to his build
as the most clutch player and he's just been terrific. Man,
(17:43):
what he can do his counters, like, it's just yeah.
And this kind of correlates to the draft. A lot
of people saw the draft measurements of certain players like
a Todd Pettiford and Chase Richard and I'm forgetting one
more guy, kind of smaller guy, but they were down
(18:04):
on because of their measurements, and I'm just like, no, man,
we can't just give up on a guy because his measurements,
to say, because we would have done that with Jaylen
Brunson too coming out of them. And that's probably why
he was the second round pick because of that. But
watch him play and you're like, oh man, you know
I remember watching him early in dallaf and being like
(18:25):
they let him get to the second round. Like I
evern thought being a second round pick regardless was insane.
But early on, even in limited time earlier, you know,
obviously they had Luca, but you're just like this, he's
he's he's a baller, he's a baller man. You know,
that's why you know, they just don't you know. I
(18:48):
saw a lot of people like their al'm ount and
jays Richson them out and on Peterford, i'm out on
some of the other smaller guards who kind of you know,
measured in short, it just watch him, watch him play,
Washing him play basketball, Washington play basketball. So sometimes when
(19:10):
we see the minute, we get so caught up in
the measurements and the wingspan. And I used to do
this early on, when I used to do a lot
of NBA draft early on and when I was evaluating guys,
I would well, wingspan. I you can get in trouble
falling love with wingspans. Canadas do play? Does he have
NBA traits? That's what you gotta look up. And you
(19:32):
see Jaylen Brunson and what he can do as a
as an under the under the rim type of player,
all his counters Jet You know, this is just it's beautiful.
It's beautiful and big reason why, you know. And even
when he's not playing well, he figures the way to
to uh to get it done. And one thing I've
(19:52):
noticed he's taking another step in his game, not just
in his scorre we know he's inna score. I know
he's gonna be able to shoot three. Well, his mid
range game is elite. He's getting to the baskets the league.
The passing, the playmaking has risen. It's gotten better in
the playoffs and and you saw that towards the ladder
(20:13):
end of the season for me, and then in the playoffs,
I feel like his playmaking is leveled up, you know. So,
I mean twelve us is seven assist, seven assists, seven assists.
Like it's just he's leveled up on his playmaking. So
that's the one thing I'm I'm just absolutely thrilled to brunts.
It isn't that yet. The scoring is there, you know,
and even when he has some tough he had some
(20:35):
tough scoring game, especially against Detroit. You know, they were
playing him tough. And even in this series, you know,
he's had a couple of tough, you know, shooty percentage games.
But it's the play making because if it wasn't for that,
I you know, this series could be two two, you know,
three one the other way, you know, or or for instance,
we might not even be in the second round if
(20:56):
his playmaking didn't level up. So shout out to Brunson
for being a better playmaker, improving the playmaking, especially on
the road. He's been really good being a playmaker on
the road. So that's been significant for the Knicks. And
they went away from going to the Eastern Conference. Froncals
(21:17):
a team that's not going to Eastern Conference honals the
Cleveland Cavaliers. They got bounced in five. Obviously some injuries
earlier on the series, but obviously the devastating way they
lost Game two, I mean, that really was the one
they needed to steal that even with all the injuries,
they should have won that basketball game, and they blew it.
And they took care of business in Game three, and
(21:39):
then got smacked in four and then game five. You know,
just their role players didn't show up. Tidjerome did not
have a great you know, he cast himself some money,
Max Strews talking all that stuff for the game. You know,
you don't believe in us, blah blah blah, and then
oh eight five from three. Just can't do that, you know.
(22:00):
So the role players didn't step up at all, and
even some of their big time I mean, Donovan Mitchell
showed up, and obviously Garland was definitely hobbled with the toe,
so that really affected them. But uh, you know a
lot of people talking about, you know, what do they
need to do. I think they're gonna run it back.
I think they're just going to go back and be like,
all right, Garland was her. I mean, Mobley was hurt.
(22:22):
Everyone or even you know, Donovan is a little bang
like they I think they're going to test it just
to injuries, and but they do need to get some
more dynamic guard play, especially you know, obviously Donovan Mitchell
is Donin Mitchell, but he needs someone else that you
can kind of help to create because, uh, you know,
especially in the playoffs, man like that Drome was the
(22:44):
most improved candidate. You know, he was really good this year,
but the playoffs just he was He looked unplayable at times,
he looked lost. You know. Uh, same thing with Max Streus.
You know, he is what he is, you know, but
the offense didn't look as dynamic as it did in
the regular season. And then defensively they were, especially when
(23:05):
they had like Max Stures, Tiger Romo or like a
or Merrio, Sam Merrill and there like, defensively it was
they were getting pretty obliterated. On the perimeter. So got
to figure that out. You know, shout out to Indiana too.
You gott to give him credit to I know, we
want to talk about the you know, the Calves kind
of you know, being frauds as the number one seed.
But they they they both they they did their thing. Man,
(23:29):
they applied to pressure hal Burton, you know, especially the
second half of the season, you know, not even so
much second half season since end of December ish January
picked up and played on the NBA basketball And that's
gonna be obviously potential fun matchup with him and Brunson,
you know, in the Eastern Conference finals. So but yeah,
(23:53):
it's going to be interesting offseason for the Calves. I
don't think they do anything significant. I think they kind
of run it back and just you know, see if
they can, you know, Matt, you know, uh match the
success they had, success they had in a regular season.
But it's gonna be interesting, be interesting to see what
they do throughout, maybe honest through maybe honest. But like
(24:15):
I said, I I think they come, they run it
back and uh and uh bring back they bring back
the main corp. They bring back the main corps. So
but uh in uh who else. We got Minnesota three
to one against Golden State. I think they close it
out and uh, Minnesota will advance to the to the
(24:41):
Western Conference Finals again. And then so I think, no, no, Steph,
it's gonna be tough for on the score Steve Kerr
what he did to Kaminga, you know, I just don't
get that. He should have, you know, uh, should have
been playing him. But it's a little too late for that.
And then okay, seen the Nuggets has didn't has been tremendous.
(25:02):
That's been an absolutely Other than Game two, that was
an absolute you know, beat down, it's been fun series.
It's been fun series. You know, it could go it
could easily have gone either way. So it's been a
it's it's been an absolute joy like that. Those are
games I'm staying up to watch, you know, I'm staying
(25:23):
up to watch those games because they've been very, very good.
Like I said, other than Game two, it's been it's
been a it could have went either way in any game,
you know. So but we got Game six coming up tomorrow,
you know, so we'll see who comes out. But I think, uh,
you know, the playoffs have been just so much fun, man,
except I've been dying to get on the podcast, you know,
(25:46):
except I haven't potted in a little bit. But I've
been done because I just wanted to talk about the
playoffs and just how good Ahead has been. It has been.
You know, we've seen you know, Yoki's just doing Superman
things like he's looked amazing, and you know what Jaylen
Brunson was able to do, and you know, it's just
you know, we're gonna might get an unconventional you know,
(26:09):
conference finals. We might get Knicks first pacers and a okay,
see you know versus uh, you know, uh, okay se
versus Minnesota finally, like unconventional. All the people thought those
are the probably. I mean, at one point Minnesota people
were down in Minnesota like it was like, oh man,
like a man trade rumors and like, ah man, you
(26:32):
got to get rid of Julius Randall all this, and
they went away from going back to the conference finals,
you know, and you know, it's just it's just crazy
how the playoffs. Look at the Knicks. Look at the Knicks.
People were like they got no chance against Ball And listen,
I'll say this straight up. I thought Boston would beat
(26:53):
us in set. But I remember telling people like, hey man,
you don't think they're going to be blowing us out
like what you saw on the regular season. That's not happened.
That's not happening. They're not gonna blow us out by thirty.
It's going to be it's going to be great games.
And listen, the first two, first three games were all
you know, they blew us out in game three, but
(27:14):
game and listen, they will by fifteen, fourteen, fifteen in
game four. You know, so like, but I'm like, obviously
they came The Knicks came back in three of those games,
but you know, obviously, you know. I was just like,
they're not going to destroy us. It's a different mentality,
a different game. And you know, if you're Boston, you
(27:36):
gotta feel sick because you you're a veteran team and
you let those two you can easily be up three
to one. You know, you you could have sweat Realistically,
it could be a sweep. You should have won the
first two games. You destroy them in game three and
then you w fourteen. You know, maybe the you know,
the way the world works, the Tatum injury that never happens,
(27:57):
you know, but you don't never know but if you're Boston,
you gotta feel sick because this might be that, this
might be it, this might be it. So that's unfortunate.
I'm on their end. But uh, you know the Knicks
going back to the Knicks, like people were down on
the Knicks. You know, they can't they get they're getting
throttled by the Cavs, are getting throttled by the Boston
(28:19):
Celtics in the regular season. They have no chance. And
I remember thinking, can't say we don't have a chance.
We all know playoff basketball is completely different than regular
season basketball, so we're going to see a different type
of Knicks team. You know, we know the playoffs are
more physical, it's more half court style, and we also
(28:41):
know that the Celtics can sometimes play with their food
and listen what the Celtics. The Celtics can take all
those threes and do it that and if they play
in Orlando or any of the bottom teams in the
in the bottom contenders in the East, they can win
despite you know, missing thirty forty to fifty threes. Can't
(29:05):
do that against the Knicks. So Mike, my thinking was, like,
you know, you can't play that style against the Knicks.
And you kept doing it, and you kept missing threes,
and you kept doing it, and you just gave the
Knicks hope because I just I'll never understand that. I'll
never understand that, because that's something a young team could do.
(29:27):
But I mean, it felt like at times the Celtics
looked like they were like the used to Rockets, like
a young team that just doesn't understand the moment. Like
this team just won the NBA Finals, Like they win
no NBA finals two years ago. They're always in the
Eastern Conference finals. It just doesn't make it, didn't make
(29:50):
it doesn't make sense how they how they let that happen.
But unfortunately, this might be the this might be it
for them with Tatum, you know, possibly out for all
next season. You know, this is a very expensive team
got you know, expect at least two of these guys
(30:11):
from their core, you know, Borzingis or Drew Holly to
not be there. You know, it's in that window may
have shut for Boston. So but man, a lot of
stuff going on. I got the NBA draft combine going on.
I'm gonna do some more NBA drafts up. I'm gonna
work on doing more shows like I said, my work
(30:31):
schedule got crazy, so I was just trying to get
comfortable with the job and before I get back to
doing podcasting. But I'm gonna get back. I got a
few days off during the week, but I'm gonna do
some more short form shows, you know in the you know,
early mornings, you know, maybe do one every other day.
(30:53):
I'm gonna get back to the grind Off the Ball podcast. Baby.

we got the Pacers are stamped in. Can the Nicks

(31:14):
in the West to go to the conference finals? WI

you guys, and as we get closer and closer. So

pleasure to uh, to get back. I was excited for
