Speaker 2 (00:18):
I love you, I love you.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Oh, it's trying to get out the fires away. It's
over the way at the.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Dollar.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
The curry back, take a dollar.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Up the laft. Oh fuck by James Lebron. James with
the rejection that just puts.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Up the tree.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Well, go past, back back out to a history.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
To Yeah, what's going on? People? Welcome back to another
episode of the Off the Ball podcast with me or
oh Chris Lebron and if you just saw me just
a few hours ago. I was on the live show
talking to Dexter Henry of the New York Post. We
got into all things summer league, talked about the Knicks
(01:21):
new head coach and how the system can benefit the
New York Knicks going for But you know, I said,
you know what, I still want to talk about the Knicks.
I still want to talk about the summer League. The
first game of the Summer League for the Knicks is tonight.
And who better to have on a guy who I
just had I think last week, yeah, a week or
(01:43):
two ago, yeah, week and a half ago. And you know,
we talked about the you know Dink Pate, you know
which a lot of people were very intrigued about. You
know so, but my guy lead, what's going on? Man?
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Double blessings to your brother to be Batman, Chop it up,
talk hoops, talking knits. The first one was so fun
we had to run it back and do it again.
So here we are on the first day of next
summer league.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah, the first day is the next summer league. I
had to get you back on the pod to talk
about it. So let's get right into it. A lot
to be excited about just for the next season period,
but a lot to you excited about for the summer
league team because a lot of these guys are going
to be integral parts of this this next team for
twenty five to twenty six in which it's a championship
(02:32):
you know caliber, you know team. So let's get right in.
So let's kind of talk about some a lot of
these guys individually. And I want to start with this
guy first because I feel like he is the most
important piece. I know, this Percom Doatier, who was important
because he was the first round pick, but I think
this guy is very wide and I talked about the
detector and I thought he was the most important player
(02:55):
in Summer League and that's Tyler Kohlich. It took Tyler
Kullak last year in the second round. I think he's
very He's his his play is going to dictate a
lot because we need valuable, important minutes played when JB
is out. That was a something that was a that
heard us last year. And I think they're really monitoring
(03:15):
the backup point guard position because I still they're still
probably in the market potentially for another ball handling guard.
So I think Tyler Kollik is going to be watched
very closely this Summer League. I think there's a couple
of things we need to see. Can he improve his
strength getting to his spots and does the shot go down?
(03:36):
If you saw some of his G League stuff, I
think he was around nineteen to ten, but the splits
weren't great. Shot under forty percent from the field, under
thirty percent from three. So Lee Tyler Kolech, let's talk
about him.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
Man Tyler Cowood for those old heads who remember white
Man Can't Jump aka Billy Hoyle, I'm a fan of Cowd.
I was not part of the hide that was clamoring
for him to get rotation in its last year. There
were a lot of delusional knit fans that were saying
free Tyler Kullak in place of a great defender like
(04:10):
Cameron Payne or delawonn Wright, who I thought were better
guarding the pick and roll, better on the perimeter and
switch his boss strings. Cold was a cone and there
was no need for him to play last season in
as far as the rotation, and especially no need for
him to play in the playoffs. It's one of the
metrics I look at if I'm interested in talking ball
with someone is that they were clamoring for Tyler Colch
(04:30):
to play legitimate playoff minutes in his rookie season. To
me is absurd. But in terms of summer lead, I
would say he's definitely top three other players I'm interested
in seeing maybe number one, number two. The shooting stuff,
I'm not so worried about finishing around the rim. I
am concerned with the mid range in traffic. The mid
range against physical defense, as you mentioned, is something I
(04:53):
might to keep an eye on. But the three point shot,
I think most three point shots that he's trying to
get when he plays spot minutes, because that's why I
predicted he's going to get this season is spot Man's
under Mike Brown, I do not think he would be
a part of the rotation. I think that three ball
is going to be wide open for him in those
minutes that he diets, whether that's garbage time or as
a sub right before halftime for Jalen Brunson. I'm not
really worried about the shot. I think the shot is
(05:15):
Steve nash S. I think he can even become a
movement shooter based on the mechanics of what I saw
in the G League last year, but I don't think
he's going to be a primary part of the rotation.
I think Deuce is probably do get an upgrade this
season with the exit of Campaign to be able to
be more of a ball handler and a playmaker for others.
That's I think the part of Deuce's game that the
(05:37):
coaching staff in the front off is cares the most
to see and improvement on, which leaves Coward out of
the rotation, But it doesn't leave him out of the
rotation for summer leads because this group of guys, a
group that has rarely played with each other, if not
at all, is going to need a connector someone who
did everybody involved and easy opportunities within sets that we
don't see a great preview what Mike Brown's going to run.
(05:58):
So I'm sure he's on funnel that the summer lead
team this maybe some basic foundational pieces on offense. Cold
is going to be supremely vital to making sure that
the bigs did opportunities for lobs and transitions, that the
wings are getting fed on cuts, and that he is
setting small to small strings, which was a mantlepiece for
(06:18):
Brown's dribble handoff system in Sacramento is small to small strings.
So I need to see him doing some of that
for a guys like mccullor or some of the other
young dudes that we have on this roster. I want
to see him do a dirty work and do the
non on ball action that helps other guys get easier opportunities.
So if we know what the passing is, we know
what the court vision is, and I think we know
(06:39):
what the sturdiness and crunch time is as well. Anytime
the Summer League, when I saw him play, I was
never worried about the Knicks losing because he was just
a demon in crunch time and I love that about him.
But the defense, to me, the lateral quickness not get't
lost in rotation? Can that be something that consistently happens
this Summer Lead. Because this is a very good group
of rookies. This is not last year's class. This is
(07:00):
an exceptional workie class all the way through the first
round and even the start of the second round. So
he's gonna be up against a much higher level of
competition this Summer Lead than he was last And I
think there's gonna be a level of bullseye on his
back to really hunt him in ballstins. Opposing teams are
going to be going after him on defense. So how
does he handle hiding put in the blender? That's what
(07:21):
I'm most interested in seeing from Tyler Puller.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, no, you're You're right. It's it's how he handles
that pressure. But like you said, he's gonna have a
he's gonna have a bunch of horses around them, like
he's gonna have abundant of athletes. And that's something we
haven't had. We don't have. We didn't, we don't, we're not.
We weren't a great athletic team. And now that he
has you know Nogy and he's going to have you know,
(07:45):
Pacomb and he's going to have Dink. You know, he's
he has some athletes, you know, Diouara another one, you know,
So that the passing display, that's I'm definitely not worried
about that. I was the shooting if if that goes down,
that might get the Knicks being like, okay, maybe we
can trust him more than we did last year. You know,
(08:07):
if that shot goes down, he gets to his spots.
I feel like, you know, the Knicks brass will feel good,
comfortable about. But what do you think exactly we need
to see from tonight or you obviously no, listen, Summer League,
We're going to overreact, you know, like we always do.
You know whether a player gets good or bad. But
what do you want to see tonight from him?
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Exactly sharp reads because a lot of these guys are
going to be very nervous. Guys have never played at
this level before. So getting guys like James Nauji good
looks and some of the other bigs that are on
this roster, the French Kid getting him acclamated when he
shares the floor with him, making sure he hits one
two or tween looks from the perimeter for open threes.
(08:47):
So smart reads number one. And then how do you
handle the pressure of being hunted on defense? Does it
affect your ability to be a playmaker and have energy
on the offensive end because of how much time you're
spent guard on switches, which is going to happen this game.
So endurance, what kind of basketball shape are you in?
How does your mental be affected by now being seen
(09:09):
as a weak point within the within the defensive steam
because as you mentioned the athletes this time around, we
have really solid defenders at the two, three, and especially
four or five on the Summer League team, but the
one is going to be the point of emphasis I
think to really attack through the opposing team's point of attack,
and I think it's going to be Tyler Kohach on
the wrong end of that. So how does he handle
(09:29):
that pressure both mentally and fatigued wise? Will also maintain
the strengths, which is hitting to open three, find guys
on lobs. I mean, really, he's already our best love
thrower on this roster, so he needs to maintain that
and get guys when they're in the dunker spot or
on the break. To get easy looks around the rim,
to get the team to flow and get guys confident.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Yeah, and like you, like you mentioned before, finishing, can
he be created enough to finish because if you could
figure that out, that would be good. And also, like
you mentioned, is how does he han we'll get attacked
and how does that help his endurance throughout the game?
Does that affect his offense when he's getting picked on?
So the couple things we're looking forward to see with
(10:10):
him today. But let's go to let's go to the
let's go to the first round pick. Let's go to
Pacombe Dotyer. Obviously we didn't see much of him last year.
He was the first round pick. You know, I mentioned
this a lot. You know, teams love those six foot
eight guys who got the plus the plus wingspan, you know,
so and I thought he was more of a project
(10:31):
type player. But you know, there's a lot of expectations
with him. With him and in a in like mentioned
in a we're in win now, mo, we're in championship mode.
You know, so what do you what are your expectations
of him? And do you do you kind of worry
with because of the mentality being it's win now Mo,
(10:53):
then maybe that can maybe hurt his development because I
always felt like he's a project player, like it's gonna
take a few years before we get there actually see
what he is. But we're going win now mode. Do
we have the patience for him to keep being in
developmental mode when we need him to be ready now?
(11:13):
But there's a there's a world where he's not ready?
So how do we handle that?
Speaker 3 (11:18):
That's a really intelligent framing of that question. I haven't
heard that asked before in terms of where we are
in our championship progress right now. To answer it, I
would say yes and no. I think he's already ready
on paper to attack closeouts and hit open threes, which
I think eventually transition to Sam Howiser role with potentially
(11:40):
deeper upside defensively in a year or two. Not this season,
but maybe one or two seasons. He to be that
spark plug off the bench where he comes in in
twelve twelve minutes for a game, four mans in the first,
maybe eight mans in a second, where he's been buying
some bench spark. I don't know if he's ever going
to be I don't think he's ever going to be
a starter. I don't think he's ever going to be
a six man, but I think he can be a
(12:01):
petrol player where you have a team that maybe isn't
good guarding on the perimeter, and he adn't come in
and attack closeouts and into the rim maybe one or
two times a game and then stretch the defense with
his three ball. But in summer lead, I need to
see a higher motor. I think that's been the thing
I've been at least impressed with, but become doatier with
the other French guys that were drafted along with him,
(12:22):
specifically Richestershire, who shocked me with how aggressive he played
in Atlanta and also how awesome he was defending navigating
ball strings and defending ball handlers on the perimeter, keeping
them going east to west opposed north to south was
probably the most the thing that was most impressed with
with him and his French compatriot didn't show that the
(12:44):
opportunities that he was given the g lead in very
small NBA minutes, we know we can shoot on paper.
He's like the hyperball with three and D prootype. But
everyone talks about and right so Art goes about, but
I haven't seen that put in the action. I haven't
really seen him use his size to his advent. She
still seems to be getting used to his body similar
to ding Pat, and he's not using that level of size,
(13:06):
strength and weed spent his advantage yet and knowing how
to utilize it inst midsmatches. So just being aggressive and
when you have the opportunity to attack a closeout, attack
it and try to draw the foul with your physicality.
As well. Of all the draft picks that we had
last year, he's the one that I'm the most worried
about not reaching full potential, specifically because he was an
(13:27):
actual first round pick, and I think the front office,
while parents specifically, saw a huge upside in him. We
have a very dense international scouting team, and I think
there was a lot of promise in him being the
first round pick opposed to have a three being a
second round. But I haven't really sent seen him look
to expectations. You know mccolor can guard the one through four.
You know of it, hot Porty, it's an elite athlete
(13:49):
at the five, and Tyer Colet is an elite floor
leader at the one. I don't know what pocom Dadi
is elite at is he just kind of average or
slightly below average at everything? I don't know. We haven't
really seen that of a sample size for me to
make a really strong proclamation on that. But I am, honestly,
I am worried about him, and I think he has
a most approve of any one player. There's summer lead
(14:11):
to show them when he is given minutes and Mike
Brown's extended rotation, he earns him.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
What was your thought process when they made this election
last year? Were you high on him or were you
kind of like me, We're like, eh, this is I
don't don't I don't really understand this election that That
was my mind ram. I had him in like the
forties range, like cause I thought he is a project,
like he needs time, and I was kind of surprised
that they would take such a project well.
Speaker 3 (14:39):
As I mentioned to start the show, last year's draft
was considerably weaker than this one. This the entire first
round of the twenty twenty five NBA draft had rotational
pieces ready, and I would say the start of a
second round did as well. Which is I mean to me,
is one of the most talented groups of kids in
a very long time. So last year at twenty six
or twenty seven, wherever we ended up picking on, we
(15:00):
trade it back or forward to get him. I wasn't
too concerned about it.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
We traded back.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Yeah, everyone after like sixteen I thought had an element
of project to them, or they were really good at
one thing and they need a lot of work in
other areas, specifically defense. But Tom Dottie had had upside
on both ends of the court. That was kind of
my kid's promise is that he can be a switchable
two way player at the three or maybe the four.
But I just haven't seen that level of aggressiveness getting
(15:26):
to his spots in the mid range and pulling up
with confidence, hitting that which allows for the rest of
the defense to center on him and then play and
make the good others involved off of that action. I
haven't seen that at all, and that all comes from confidence.
So I'm not too worried at where he was picked
in terms of last year's draft, because I thought it
was a week draft. Overall, I'd agree with you, I
think he's a project, but I also am placing the
(15:48):
most emphasis and expectations on him in tonight's game and
throughout the summer League.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Yeah, he's someone I'm definitely looking a lot to see
if he can make those see if he's really good
at one thing. Like I said, we don't need him
to be, you know, this dominant player. You know, we
just need him to be good at a couple of things.
So he I'm looking forward to see how he progresses,
because he did some good things in the G League.
(16:14):
But still, what is he what is that one thing
that's really going to stand out? You know, we don't
need him to be like that, We don't need to
be great everything, but can he stand on in one
thing that's to be We'll see what happens.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
There's not a whole lot of commentary or scouting reports
on him having a broken jumper or not be it
not having fluid movement that you know, all of those
in terms of like the hyge test. Most scouts are
pretty high on him, like already kind of having some
high levels of fundamentals. I would say the same thing
about Tyler Pullward. It's just the aggressiveness. The NBA is
a different beast. You know, this is the league for
(16:50):
a reason. In or to stay you have to be
willing to do two things achieve greatness under high amounts
of pressure and being able to do the dirty work.
And I haven't seen him do it yet. So you know,
my eyes are on him, that that side eye emoji
on him right now. But I'm hoping he delivers. Luckily,
we have some depth at that position.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
Yeah, but you know he's still young, he's still trying
to figure things out, you know, you know, adjusting to
you know, the game here. So we'll see what happens.
But definitely someone you know, he's the first round pick,
so there's gonna be expectations with that alone. But there's
gonna be expectations for him because you know, there's uh,
you know, we are in the win now mode and
you know we need you know, if his development continued
(17:29):
and we get some type of progression, that's gonna be
a big bonus, you know, coming off the bench. All Right,
mentioned this guy before, but let's he was the last
pick the last year's draft. That's area Hawk party. We
saw him get some minutes last year. Was productive in
those minutes. You know, I didn't think, you know, he
would be that productive in the limited minutes he was playing.
You know, uh went down late in the season, but
(17:50):
every Hawk Party is going to be. You know, he's
someone that I had on the draft radar for a while,
like Party like, he's been around and you know we
took him late, gave him chance, and you know, made
Jericho sim disposable. You know, we want the moving him,
you know, because we felt it felt like they have
trusted him. So what what are the expectations in year
two for Arial HARKPORTI what do you want to see
(18:10):
from him? Just tell me what you do? You think
he makes another it makes another leap.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
M No, But I think what he already was is
good enough. I think the standard right high floor, yes,
high floor and almost no ceiling in my opinion, which
is not not on him because you need just on
your roster. But I mean the standing reach, the lateral movement,
the potential for rent protection as a as a stationary five,
(18:42):
I think there are very high for him. And those
are all floor uh attributes. And I think the athleticism
we saw on him as a shot blocker, as a
wheat side defender, as a rent runner excellent. Like those
are type of things that we wanted from Precious. Precious
didn't have the coordination or the offensive aware to be
that consistently, and I think hot Porty can of the
(19:04):
four rookies that we drafted last year and of everyone
on this current summer leads squad, I think Hot Party
has the greatest chance to be actually be a part
of Mike Brown's rotation. But in order to do so,
I think we don't need a little to see a
little bit more stretch ability. It doesn't necessarily have to
be a three, but some type of shot like Isaiah
Hartenstein had with that push shot in the mid range,
(19:25):
that is a go to move for him in traffic
that he needs to develop that because they don't collapse
and build a wall on him to try and make
life difficulty with him as a potential lob threat. So
to create some type of variants and go to move
in the free throw line in is going to be crucial.
And then also improving as a string setter and a
dribble handoff five or four to pand on what position's
(19:47):
played is going to be crucial in Mike brown system
as well, because Brown really he prioritizes spacing, he prioritizes
off ball movements, and your bids better set good strings
and you better give Chris dribble handoff, So I think
that's going to be a big part of his game
and allowing for Mitch to did some rest or even
pairing him with Mitch and Mitch trying to be more
the rent protector and he's initiating some of the action
(20:08):
at the elbow or on the perimeter is going to
be a part of him elving his role, not necessarily
taking a jump game wise, but being really a part
of a system and depend on part and the cod
and that front court rotation, and I think he can
do that. He's probably the one I'm worried about the
least and the one that I'm expecting to have a
real impact. Knock on wood, he stays healthy this season.
(20:29):
I the end, how how he got the injury and
how soon he got it with minimum playing time was
a little worrisome last year. But I'm hoping he bounces
back with Casey Smith and the medical staff and he
shows he can be a real threat two way threat
for Mike Brown.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Yeah, and in this offense with Mike Brown, he likes
to like, he likes to work his BIG's a lot
of the pinch post, and I think this will benefit
Harry hook Porty a lot expanding his game more so.
And I think he's gonna make that. Like I said,
I'm not worried about it. And you mentioned before and
a couple people said that they don't know if the
ceiling there is much ceiling, but the floor is good.
(21:04):
That's good, and and that's there's nothing wrong with that.
And I agree one hundred percent. Like I think he's
gonna be solid, and we will see a little bit
more of his game, you know, I'm hoping to see
especially defensively, you know, more discipline as a shop locker,
you know, not now files some sometimes a lot. There
was a lot of fouls, quick fouls, two fouls quick.
You know. Let's see if he helps with Let's see
(21:27):
if he improved that aspect of his game too. But
I'm I'm I'm like I said, I'm not I'm with you.
I'm not too worried about I think he's gonna be good.
I think he's gonna look I wouldn't say dominant, but
he's gonna look like he's he belongs for sure. And
we're like, all right, he's locked up. He might not
even play much in the summer league. I feel confident
in that aspect.
Speaker 3 (21:46):
You know. I think about the Indiana Pacers in a
way that Rick Carlisle used Obi topping where Tom Thibodeau
did not. And I wouldn't call myself a TIBs defender,
but I wasn't a hater either. But it's the one
thing that one of his biggest flaws opinion, was underutilizing
Obie once Obi got to Indiana. It wasn't just fast
cored transition outlet passes or advanced passes from Tyre's howidburn
(22:08):
and dunks. It was utilizing Obie as a cutter right
against on the baseline and not just on the baseline,
but also in the dunder spot, finding him for those
easy quick lobs that really add two more points to
a deficit. Right, we got to utilize arrow hot Poory
in the same way. Now that's outside of its control.
That's gonna be Mike Brown really emphasizing our guards. This
(22:31):
is Jalen Brunson included, Milesman brought Bride included, and if
Tyler Colhles a part of the rotation, and Jordan Cartson
find Aeriel because once you do and you throw that
ball up there, it's like Mitchell Robinson, how do we stop.
That level of athleticism and strength that close to the
rim is very hard. Those are the high percentage shots
that Mike Brown really emphasized in Sacramento, along with the
(22:52):
open threes through off ball movement and pearls that accentuate
your offense becoming the best in the NBA. And I
think that's how Aero already more than becoming a stretch
five or a stretch four or operating as a as
a hub on the at the free throw line, those
things are all bonuses, but at the baseline, utilize them
as a lob threat and a backdoor cutter because I
(23:13):
think a Hubbardi showed he's not a standstill player. He
will move around to wear out his defender and tried
it open. You've got to find him. So that's what
Indiana did with Obi Topping.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
I agree with you one hundred percent. Man, I agree
with you. There's a That's why there's a lot of
excitement with me with with Coach Brown being the head
coach now, because there's just so much more offensive fluidity
we're going to see that we have seen in some years.
You know, just you know, like I said, I'm I
love what Tips did I'm so grateful that he made
(23:44):
us relevant again because it was dumb down years. But
I understand the pivot. I understand the pivot, and we
needed some We needed to expand to the offense. And
you know, I think Mike Brown, there's gonna be a
lot of beneficiars of the Mike Brown offense. So looking
forward to that. All right, let's talk about a few
war guy. Let's talk about Kevin mccullor. Kevin mccaullor, six
foot six, you know, can score, but like a lot
(24:07):
of these other guys, what's the biggest thing the outside shooting.
But he could he could play some defense, showed that
especially his last year Kansas limited action last year with
the with the with the Big Club. Only played like
three four games with us with the Big Club. But
you know, showed some good scoring at G League. But
(24:27):
like I said, the outside shot just wasn't there. So
what are we looking forward to Kevin mccallor, Because I
don't think he has a guaranteed spot, you know, so
he's trying to buy for like a two way spot here.
So what are your expectations for Kevin mccullor.
Speaker 3 (24:40):
Man, I don't know if I have any because I
barely saw him play last.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
Year, only four let me see how many games? Only
four games and with the Knicks, and he played played
something in the G League. But they said the shooting.
Speaker 3 (24:52):
Splits were great, right, this is kind of the one
where you had to just lean on hypotheticals. Es that
said some two hundred pounds. I mean he didn't guard
the point of attack the two, but three, maybe even
fours depending on the team matchup and who is who's
across from him.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
But Kansas, we did the Kansas, Yes.
Speaker 3 (25:10):
And at Kansas he had a below one hundred defensive
breaking it's like ninety eight or ninety seven, which was
like leading the NC double A. That's a really incredible
number even guard against you know, college players, not NBA players.
But that's an incredible stack to have regardless, So I
think he's going to have a role. He might end
up being the peon Ellis for Mike Brown, someone who's
kind of in and out of the rotation, and the
(25:31):
fans are clamoring for him to play more. But his.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
That's a good comp I see that.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
The consistency on shooting might keep him from being, you know,
a consistent player because you're having to balance and statter
his lack of spacing with Josh Hart, with Jordan Partson,
with Mitchell Robinson, all of which hurt spacing already. We're,
you know, we're one of the teams that probably has
the least amount of pure shooting on a period and
(25:59):
the two guys a dude don't shoot enough and brunts
in cat So it's gonna be hard for him. Necessary
to find a niche, but to find a consistent role.
Unless all of a sudden he comes out of train
camp with a heater on his arm, then maybe I
think the opportunity for him at tract rotation would be
stronger at that moment than Pokom Dadiya because of a
defensive upside. If he had a three ball, just a
(26:22):
catch and shoot three ball would be enough. I think
for him to be the tenth or eleventh guy in
Mike Brown system. But we haven't seen that. We haven't
seen enough of him yet. But on paper, man, it's
archetypal for sure.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
Yeah, the shooting has to be at least solid, Like
right now, it's below it's not even average, it's not
even below average. It's bad. So we need to see
an uptick, you know, he because like I said, we
don't have enough shooting for us to be like you
know what, he could play defense. He's big. All right,
we'll just leave him there and we'll be all right.
(26:56):
We don't have like you just mentioned, we have a
lot of non shooters, especially off the bench, so we
can't have another non shooter. You know. That's why I
still think maybe that last process spot. I know there's
not a lot of shooters left. They might try to
find a shooter or that him have to be something
at the deadline where they try to get into the
shooter because that could come down and bite us. But
he's someone like the shooting they get better the last
(27:20):
few years of Kansas, but still not The numbers weren't great.
But he's gonna have a I think he's gonna it's
gonna be tough for him. It's gonna be tough for him.
Like I said, we haven't seen much of him. He's
been banged up a lot, so I mean he has
the size and everything you want in a wing. You know,
can guard post positions, but can the shot? Can he
hit the shot? Can he hit some catch and shoot shots?
(27:41):
Can can well we see that that's gonna be something
I'm looking for. But you know, Kolig, that being there
is gonna He's gonna get a lot of good looks.
Are they gonna go down? So he's intriguing. He's intriguing
because if he doesn't have a good shooting display, I
don't I could see, I could see them moving off
from him. So that a great point.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
I think his role with the team is probably the
most dependent on his performance in something lead more than
anybody else, anyone else being outside of the bubble. Right,
I consider him inside the bubble as of now. But
I think if he shows it, not a poor showing defensively,
because I think that's going to maintain that's his calling card.
And he's actually a pretty solid rebounder, and I would
(28:21):
say secondary facilitator more and like the hockey assists than
someone who has raly good reads. But at that three
ball in exactly what you said, not off a dribble
above the break, but catch and shoot three balls. If
that doesn't fall and he shoots below thirty five percent,
I think they don't move off him. And did that
two way to someone else? Maybe it's ting Paid or
somebody else. Maybe it's James Nage. I don't know, but
(28:43):
they need to show that year over year he's getting better.
And there was incremental growth from his freshman, sophomore, in
junior seasons at the last one in Kansas where he
shot a forty five percent from the field overall, and
his junior year. But that, to me, that's not enough
at the NBA level for the type of role he's
runn to play. It's ortunately he landed on a team
that's two guys played very similar in terms of inefficient
(29:05):
basketball and Josh Hart and Jordan Cartsan. It's gonna be
super tougher in a cracked rotation. That's his flaws gonna
be magnified because he's sharing him a court with people
who shoot in the same places as him.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
Yeah, and the next guy I'm going to talk about
is early similar in size and was on the team
for a little bit last year and the former first
round pick by the Milwaukee Bucks. And as marj On Baychamp,
he's another guy similar in size, bounced around a little bit.
What are we feeling about marj On do we think?
Do you have any expectations? You know, he's another one
(29:38):
where he needs the shot to go down. I think
his calling card is shooting, hit the catch, and shoot guy.
And if that's not it, I mentioned this with Dex
he could be battling for his NBA life because he's
already been on a lot of teams and he hasn't
cracked enough minutes to be like you know, and yeah,
(29:58):
he's still young, and other people bring that up, but
there's a lot this The league is influxed with young
guys that you know, twenty four is old, you know,
and the NBA in this generation it's old. It's old ish,
you know. So like, hey man, we might have to
He's battling for his life, so I'm interesting to see
what we get for him. I don't have any expectations
(30:19):
of him making a roster, but I am intrigued a
little bit if the shooting does come on, because like
I said, we do need shooting, and if he can show,
you know, because there's times where he's shown he could
be an okay shooter, then there's time. It's just the inconsistency.
So any expectations with boat Champ because like I said,
former first round pick has talent, but it just feels
like the development has been ever since the G League days,
(30:41):
it's just been it hasn't been great.
Speaker 3 (30:43):
Like start this off with the positive congratulations on linking
up with thatster. Henry a great friend of a KOT channel.
That'ster has a great taste on the people that he
brings on the show. And that's saying that just because
I've beound the show a few times, my boyfriend on
the show.
Speaker 1 (30:59):
I'll be on the show Sunday. I'm looking forward. So yeah,
he's a good dude.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
Man, He's a good definitely knows ball, so that's their nd.
He has a good eye for talent. If he's bringing
you on the show. Here's a negative. Marjon Beau Champions Cooked.
I have absolutely no expectations for him. I do not
think he is on any level of knt's roster when
this season starts. I don't think he's on any NBA
roster when the season starts. He is my worst fear
(31:25):
for what could happen to Pocom Dottie is someone who's
picked in the twenties in the first round. Like both
of them were good.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
I didn't ever think about it, but yeah, you're right.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
You're right, right, has the athleticism on paper all the measurements,
you know, decent stats when they played professional or in college,
and then never lives up to the positional art type
of what he is. He Every team is looking for
more marj Bot Camps on paper, but when you have
them on their roster and there's not a moment where
he can stand out doing it as it did as
(31:56):
I said the little things or in moments of supreme pressure.
Those are type of guys that tend to be funneled
out of the lead very quickly and make a name
for themselves in Europe, and I think that's where Bochamp is.
He's a former first round pick with six seven measurements,
you know, around two hundred pounds. He should be a
better athletic tweiner who can attack close outs and pull
(32:17):
up from three, but we haven't seen any of that
in his career. And if the Milwaukee Bucks, who are
trying to build contender around Giannis, we're not looking to
peep him as a cheap option. I think that's a
negative sign for his future and why the Knicks were
able to pick him pick him up off of the waiver.
I think he's cooked after some re lead and I
hope that his minutes and opportunities are given somewhere else.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Honestly, yeah, I tend to agree, and you bring to
a good point with the Dottia and like the arch
type and those type of guys, those type of guys
are always going to get opportunities, Like I won't be
shocked that Bachimp keeps getting summer league invites because and
him being a former first round pick, you're always gonna
get opportunities. But you could be right though, I actually
(33:00):
I don't have expectations for him. I understand why they
gave him a shot because listen, why not, you know,
you got to fill out some league team. You never know,
you know, if he if he starts shooting, maybe, But yeah,
I liked him coming out of the G League. But
it just feels like, especially with the timeline of the
Bucks that you know, he just like you said, he
didn't do the little things that showed out and that's
(33:23):
kind of why they gave up on him. And he's
been bouncing around and he said, no real expectations of him,
you know, doing anything, but you know, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
It's also so much of the NBA and success from
my advantage point is kind of luck and fit, like,
do you go to a team where your skill set
can be maximized because what you need around you or
next to you enhances the very like the undeveloped parts
of your game. And unfortunately, and this is not a
knock to Jalen Brunson or karnelvan Challenge orducing bride, but
(33:56):
we don't have, in my opinion, an elite playmaker for
others on this roster. Marj On Bocamp had went to
Dallas during the Luka Doncics and Kyrie Irvin days, I
think he would have seen a similar renaissance as Dante
Edson did, who was out of the NBA playing in Europe,
came back and got picked up for another year by
the Mass because he did the little things. He played defense,
(34:16):
fifty balls, He became a solid play maker for others.
He hit the well, he kind of hit the open three.
He started out hitting the open three. But those things,
it's all about where you land and who's around you.
I don't think this roster is set up for bow
champs strengths to be maximized and his weaknesses to be hidden.
So that's just that's how it followed. Sometimes in terms
(34:39):
of Domino. So I hope this pet. I'm not rootin
a Vincent kid. I just don't think he has any
future here with the Nicks.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
Now I'm with you on that, man. Let's let's see
what happens with him, all right. Let's talk about some
of the guys that we drafted and the undrafted guide
and that we have spoken a lot about. But let's
talk about Mohammed Yuara, Like I said, another one of
these guys six foot eight, seven foot four weeks. But
we talked about him, you know a little bit in
our previous pod. But what do you feel like, what
(35:08):
does the what do you feel like the expectations are
for him? You know? Have you have you done some
more homework on him to get a better feel of him? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Man, Like we talked about before the pod started, I
really hesitate to fake the funk ever and talk about
a player that I only have YouTube highlights of because
the way that those YouTube videos or package, it's always
with a bias. They're only showing you know that the
full court talk, that's a transition pull up three, it's
really is it someone creating in space or someone you
(35:37):
know attacking or clothes out with that really clever offensive awareness,
and I haven't. There's not enough tape out there. In
my opinion, there really is.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
I tried. I used there used to be a guy
on YouTube who would clip every possession of every prospect,
and I don't know where he went. He used to
be my go to guy. Every possession, good, bad, doesn't matter.
He would clip every possession of each prospect, and I
couldn't find a guy. So, like I said, I'm with you.
I didn't get too much other than hearing some things
(36:06):
about you know about him, but not much in film.
I got to see.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
Yeah, there's a couple of things you know that I
can say I learned from the TIMS era that are important.
Don't be a turnover hub. Don't be the reason that
you know the Knicks might have twelve or fourteen turnovers
in a summer league game. Don't be the reason or
lead the team in turnovers. Look for the open man.
If you don't have, even if you're in one of
your five or six elite shots within your your player
(36:35):
profile died. Even if you're there and you're like, this
is this is my move? I didn't take this mane
off of dribble, but your teammates open over there in
the corner, you don't make the pass. Don't be that
guy too, Like, keep the ball moving, look for the
high percentage shots, because when I taught the scouts and
other media members, those are things right now in summer
lead the coaches and coaching staffs and gms are looking for.
(36:55):
Are they connective not are they elite in these one
to two spots on the floor and they're wide open,
But do they keep the ball movement and do they
have a mindset for find the best high percentage shot.
If he can do that, I think he has a
chance to earn that two way even if maybe he's
out played on a one on one level by Bo
Champ or somebody else, I think he will get the
nod because they see him as an impactful player on
(37:18):
the team perspective, not as an individual perspective.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
Yeah, he's got those long, long arms on defense, you know,
except the wingspan helps on it. And he plays from
what I've seen, like he plays the passing lines pretty well,
you know, which helps with that his frame and like
I said, he has the French connection, you know with
with the comb and now Yabuseli, you know, Gershon Yobaseli.
You know, so maybe that that definitely helps him, you know,
(37:43):
for opportunity, except the shot from what I know, is
not there Offensively, I don't think we should expect much
from other than just being you know, getting offensive rebounds
and crashing the boards and you know, rim running, you know,
pick and roll stuff, but nothing outside shots. He didn't
shoot the free throw line really well. So you know,
we'll see how he does. You know, what about James Naji,
He's another man that's six foot eleven, toll foot eight
(38:06):
wings man. You know, what do you what do you do?
Any you know we picked we got him in the
cat trade. Who got his rights from in the cat trade?
You know, because I think he got traded I think
from Charlotte to the Minnesota I think, and that's when
we got his rights. So any expectations of James Augy.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
I'm not too worried about how he plays in Summer
League because I think he's going to be a long
term project for Leon Roose regardless, I think they're going
to find a way to stash him and be smart
about it while maintaining sour cut flexibility. Since we're so
close to Thatt second apron. I think he goes under.
He is probably the one I feel his strongest for
getting a two way contract because you can't teach that
(38:45):
size when.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
He is monster human bro.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
He is in some of the most elite shape of
any player I've ever seen in my life, and Mitchell
Robinson is injury prone as he is and us being
kind of thin at a true center, I think he's
going to be someone who's in our long term plans
as a backup possibility to eventually replace Mitch years down
the road after we win a championship, hopefully fingers crossed,
(39:12):
or to impact as a third string center immediately in
that Jared or Simmons role. So yeah, again, it's like,
how how are your hands catching the ball in traffic
and finishing around the rim? Like how is your mobility
jumping off of two feet in the dunder spot off
of a seal and getting an easy dunk around the rim?
Those things are important? How do you what is your
passing like out of double teams to find ball hand
(39:32):
orers and shooters on the perimeter fundamental for.
Speaker 1 (39:35):
Big double team like especially nowadays, if you can't pass
out of a double team, it's gonna be hard for
you to play as a big because if they can't
trust you because you're gonna get doubled, they can't trust
you to pass. They like you said, they don't want turnovers.
We don't want turnovers. So that that's such an underrated
aspect of a big is how do you pass out
(39:56):
of a double team? Do you get flustered? Do you
get frustrated? Because if you want with the ball in
the post, you need to be able to get be
trusted and if you can't do that, then jb And
and Michale, this guy, you're not gonna get the ball
from those guys.
Speaker 3 (40:09):
I think so, Yeah, I think he'd have a mid
summer league. I think he's still probably a lot for
a two way contract just because of the upside potential
and the understanding that he's still a raw prospect but
has unbelievable physical acumens that make him impactful right away.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
The ceiling is we talk about Poorty having not having
a high ceiling. Nagy ceiling is insane, like, yes, he
figures it out. Like if he's able to figure it out,
like we do you cut have something and I and
that can I said, I'm not expecting much. But Mitch's
come is unexpiring, so that could be like, hey man,
(40:46):
maybe Mitch's you know, he has injury history, maybe we
could let him go and maybe Nagy could be that guy.
You never know, they've developed backup centers pretty well, you know,
it's like a round centers and and you know they've
done a good job with that. So you know, we'll
see with him. Let's talk about our guy, mister. You know,
you know a lot of people have been talking about
(41:09):
especially Sin. If we did the pod, it seems like
a lot more people intrigued about DNK Payt. And you know,
obviously there's going to be people that are like, we're
talking about a second an undrafted guy, you know, blah
blah blah. But you know, we're just giving information, you know,
we just want people to know more about who these
players are. And you, like I said, when you were
on the pod, we talked a lot of you know,
a lot about Dink being in the Dallas area. So
(41:32):
what are the expectations for DNK pate? Well, what do
you what are you looking forward to and what do
you think he needs to do exactly to make sure
he gets one of those two way spots and be
part of this organization.
Speaker 3 (41:43):
And those are great questions. I would say, be effective
off ball in the moments that he is paired with
Tyler Coha in the back court, those are the ones
on them. That's probably the single biggest move that I'm
looking forward to seeing is how does he play alongside
tywer Cohen both guarding the point of attack but also
being able to be effective running off ball. But can
(42:04):
he be a catch and shoot option. I haven't seen that.
There's no tape telling me that he can. But maybe
with this team, with decent spacing nets or cold he
might be able to finally hit a three. So if
he finishes the game one or two from a three
point line, I'm gonna be a static, like, bro, just hit,
just hit the three. Win. Its open ended up to play.
Calls for you to be that bailout shot or maybe
(42:25):
the second or third option within a set. But that's
beautiful basketball. And then on the defensive end, keep your
man in front of him. I think he's gonna have
a little bit of difficulty guarding some of the stronger wings.
This is not the G League, this is not high stool,
which he's only two years removed from I'm a little
worried about him guardian in space with some of these
really big threes and fours, size is said seven Sis eight.
(42:49):
He tends to be able to guard down, not guard up,
So I'm a little I'm a little worried about that.
I think this point of attack, if he was guarding Colk,
I think he would lock up Colic personally just because
of a lack of foot speed and movement. But yeah,
don't be a defensive liability. Beat crisp and rotations and
moving the ball. Don't try to over assert yourself offensively
(43:10):
and do too much. Don't try to shoot two me
theories and prove that you do have a shooter because
you've been taking that thousand shots in practice since you
got picked up by the Knicks.
Speaker 1 (43:18):
How do you balance that? How do you how do
you think a player like that balances it? Because we
all know he's fighting for a spot, right He's an
undrafted guy, so there's an uphill battle, So how do
you balance that that? All right? I want to show
out because I want to show that I belong and
I want to show them that I can do all
these things. But he also has to play within the
(43:40):
team within the team frame, So how do you How
does a guy balance that where you're trying to prove things,
but you still got to play within the team, you know,
because the goal is still to win the game, right,
you still want to win and show out and show
that you're a team player, but you also want to
be kind of selfish. But you're also dealing with other
guys who are in the same boat. Like everyone's trying
to get those spots. So like, how do you do
(44:02):
you do? You have you talked to like do you
know anyone that has been done as situations? You know?
Because I find that fascinating with Summer league is that
everyone's trying to get maybe one or two spots. You
got ten to twelve guys trying to fire for a
couple spots. But yet you still you got to stay
in team mode when you have to be selfish because
you want that spot, you know. I always find that
(44:23):
fascinating with Summer League.
Speaker 3 (44:25):
Great question, I have a compounded complex answer that, and
talking to his pops consistently, he's been a lab really
working on a jumper to show But that's something that
shouldn't be a worry about in summer lead, so he's
definitely playing the reps. I will say. I would say
that's his number one biggest weakness is he's not elite
at reading the game and he can get into ISO mode.
(44:48):
I don't want to call it me mode, but attack
mode recklessly, and we saw that a lot in the
G League. I'm worried that if he takes that first
three and it doesn't go down even worse, it's short,
it's an airball, or it's a brick, or it doesn't
hit the rim, I'm worried that he tries to do
too much at that point and take over the game
with his athleticism, which is going to lead the turnovers.
(45:09):
And that's only really the sloppy playover overall, because they're
probably going to have him at the one of the two,
which means he's going to be handling the ball a
fair amount when his minute, when his time is called.
That's my concern. I hope that first shot he takes,
whether it's a pull up, midee or a corner three,
goes in so that he kind of maintains his semblance,
a flow and team perspective and doesn't go into a
(45:32):
shell and side himself.
Speaker 1 (45:33):
That's something you saw with him in dur Yes. Once,
once the shot goes in, he's feeling good. But one
if it's not, he starts to do a lot of
rational basketball moves and it gets sloppy.
Speaker 3 (45:45):
It's the number one weakness that I've seen in his game.
It's something that he absolutely has to clean up, because
in my opinion, he's not really a point guard. He's
a three. But the lack of strength and the lack
of I would say fluidity with his body and ball
handling and ball control and port vision makes him a
overrated point of attack guard. He's really someone should be
(46:09):
on the wings, catching and shooting, catching and attacking closeouts,
catching maybe two or three dribbles, creating space pull up
shot rather than leaving the offense. But I think he's
going to have the ball in his hands doing some
of that in summer lead. And it's so much to
depend on confidence and perspective and that if his pops
and his pots a great dude, everyone around him, really
(46:30):
solid people, his family. I hope that's what they're a
drilling in him the most, is composure and poise and
remembering it's not about the stats. It's about the effectiveness
and the minutes that you're given. And if he can
maintain that that that dichotomy of trying to prove himself,
we're trying to fit in. I think he's he'll he'll
earn a two way spot.
Speaker 1 (46:49):
Yeah, Oh that's good. That's good to know because it's
like I said, I've always been fascinated with that process,
like how does how does someone deal with that that game?
And I'm not a first round pick or even the
second round. I'm undrafted. I'm fighting for my you know,
I'm fighting for a spot like so, but you know,
confidence is everything, and if if he gets that first
shot to go in, maybe that's that's a bonus. And uh,
(47:11):
you know, we'll see how it is. He's gonna I'm
sure he's gonna be times. We'll see him on the ball,
we'll see him off ball, you know, Cole, see how
he moves. So he's fascinating. I really think. I know
it's an undrafted dude. And some people have, like I
mentioned before, as I'm being like, well why are you
why are you talking? I was like, but he's just
he's fascinating because the talent was not undrafted. The talent
(47:33):
alone was a first round pick just on talent alone.
It was first round pick worthy. So to get potentially
the type of talent like that as an undrafted dude,
that's that's you don't get that. So if we can
and I trust that, you know, especially with the new
coaching staff, that we can figure if we can get
him in the lab, fix him up, get him, you know,
(47:53):
I get him on the rock, get him on the
G League, and get him you know, with the op
and all them, and get him in the lab working
could have some could have something, you know.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
And I know that I might sound critical or I
might sound more critical than I do positive, but I
am very optimistic on this kid. It's the reason I'm
attaching my name sort strongly to him, because I absolutely
believe in him as a prospect, someone who's willing to
put in the world to get better. And you shot,
you saw that in the stats and splits from his
first year with the Night to his second year in
metstro City, you saw an increase in aggressiveness and an
(48:25):
increase in asserting himself, especially because they take him off
ball and they put that they didn't have him bring
the ball up anymore. We gave that to Trey Burke
and the Metstter City team, So he had to be
a little bit more of an exposive athlete in transition
than having to said it about everybody up. But these
players who when their biggest strength This is just like
holistically throughout my time watching ball, when a player's biggest
strength is at athleticism and they face a modern NBA
(48:50):
the league level defense, they tend to revert to their
worst tendencies and over exert themselves and that tends to
lead the turnovers. And I have a feeling that the
first four or five possessions, uh, they're don't be uh
hedging off of him pretty hard and let him take
him open through some perimeter to see what he's able
to give him. And he's gotta shoot with confidence because
(49:10):
if that first one doesn't go, I'm gonna I'm gonna
punch my ass and be like, this might be a
rough night my main man being paid. But listen, I'm optimistic.
I think he's gonna I think he's gonna show out
through these four games.
Speaker 1 (49:22):
I mean, this is the opportunity. So I'm a rooting
for him. I'm a root for him. You know, he's
someone that I thought was a draftable player, and like
I said, there's talent there so and we can use
the athleticism so especially, so for sure I'm looking forward
that he's one of the main guys I'm gonna be
looking forward. So who else? I mean, there's there's a
couple other intriguing names that the Knicks, you know, have
(49:42):
on their g league roster. Who for you? They you know,
like I said, they Well, probably these guys aren't gonna
make the team. But is there anyone else that the
Knicks have on their summer league roster that you're kind
of like, you know, I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued about this
this guy or these couple guys.
Speaker 3 (49:58):
There's no one I think that can actually made the roster.
But there is a theme that has came up that
I not only find intriguing but makes you very proud
of where I grew up and where I'm from, which
is the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Dink is the second
player from the AAU team that I collaborate with Urban
DFW to make the Knits summer lead. The second was
(50:20):
Farron Hunt, who came during Jericho Simm's rookie year, didn't
make the team, but did play with the Summer Lead
and play with the Westchester Knits for a while. Not
many AAU teams in the United States and say they
have two players that have been picked up by the
New York Knits. The one that I assist with coaching
and administration can which I'm very proud of that as
well as there's two other players on the Knitz besides
(50:43):
DNK that have DFW ties. You got Lance Ware who
played for my album Matter. I think he might be
the first UTA player to be on an NBA Summer
League team. He's a six to nine forward from UH
finished up in UTA for the Longhorn short Horns. And
then we also of Jamal Bay who played for Bishop
Dorman here in Dallas. So that's three DFW linked players
(51:06):
I'm excited to watch. I don't think that Where and
Bay will have any opportunity to make the team, but
it is fascinating to see just how much of a
basketball incubator North Texas has become for NBA talent at
the lottery level, at the second round, at the undrafted,
at the Summer League. I'm telling you, man, Kate Tunnyham
was just the start for the type of talent that
we're going to see coming at DFW.
Speaker 1 (51:29):
Yeah, no, and where is kind of interesting? You know,
he's had people probably know from Kings Kentucky days and
I think you go to Nova that didn't really work out.
Then he went to Arlington, right ut Arlington?
Speaker 3 (51:41):
Right?
Speaker 1 (51:42):
Well you said that's your alma mater, right, you said, yes,
you know so and he played there and showed outs.
You know, he's he's interesting. Like I said, I don't
think he'll make the team, but you know he's got
a nice frame, six foot nine, you know, two twenty
you know, so he's interesting. But like I said, no
one really I know, the Lucas Skoda guys. People are
fascinating with the name, you know, but he's in intriguing,
you know, you know Slobemian, you know, six', ten you,
(52:02):
know not not the. Shooter people may, think you, know,
uh still in consistent. Shooter but you know that's an intriguing.
Guy if he can hit the, shot he could be.
Intriguing but nobody really else that THAT i expect much From.
Booth do you think we'll do you think we'll see
any implements Of Mike brown's system at?
Speaker 3 (52:22):
All, yes, yes for. SURE i think you don't see
a lot of, movement a lot of. CUTTING i THINK
i see a lot of small to small. STRINGS i
think you're gonna see a re emphasis for lobbs to
get guys opportunities around the. RIM i think that's gonna
be something That Mike brown is donna want to implement
with this. Team, specifically he wants to increase. Space we
heard him in his opening. Presser that's gonna be something
(52:44):
he wants to add to our. Roster then it's been
in the bottom of pace Under Tom, thibodeaux and one
of the things that you can do get easy buckets
from that is finishing around a rim specifically wins assisted
on in a lot of. Capacity SO i Think tyler
told is really gonna be looking as a playmaker more
as a or this summer lead opposed to Last and,
yeah just seeing who connects no matter who they share
(53:06):
the floor. With the guys who only thrive with last year's,
ROOKIES i think that's gonna matter less than the guys
who are plug and play no matter who's in the.
System they're moving off, ball they're, cutting they're setting streams off.
Ball those are the ONES i think you are going
to have the eye of a coaching staff when it's
being considered on who gets a two way and who's
(53:26):
to The Westchester. Knicks uh once the season.
Speaker 1 (53:28):
Starts, NO i. Agree so's It's I'm i'm looking forward to.
Today it's it's going to be interesting to see what
we see, exactly you, know, offensively see who's made the
progressions that we. See and because, this, listen these guys
are potentially very vital pieces to a maybe a championship caliber.
(53:51):
Team so this is this is. Big this is big
for for our guys to see what they. Do But,
lee appreciate you again for coming. On then it's it's
always it's always good talking to hoop with. You you, know
you are a professional, ballner so always a pleasure talking
hoop with.
Speaker 3 (54:07):
You. MAN i appreciate. You. Man let's SAY i froze
up on. THERE i am. GOOD i was sucking the
matrix for a. Moment, SORRY i HAVING i was having
flashbats nineteen ninety. Nine, yeah, man glad to be glad
to be on sharing the pod with you. Again you're
SOMEONE i love talking ball with both On twitter and
on the. Podcast got to have you on the kot
(54:28):
show soon maybe if you would love to have you
chop it up with the whole. Team and, yeah, man
it's always a blessing to be able not just to,
spread you, know my love for the, game but also
when at the time show is, doing we're gonna be
live streaming The Summer. League me be The motivator And
fritz the mod God Fifth beatle are going to be
talking to do a, game cracking, jokes giving our heads
(54:48):
and analysis while the First Summer league games going. On
so catch us on playback and.
Speaker 1 (54:53):
YouTube. Awesome, Yeah i'll be tapped. In i'll be watching
BEFORE i head into work. Tonight but, UH i always
liked talking to you because, you LIKE i, SAID i
like talking to people who just understand and love hoop
and you. Learn this is How i've. Learned it's crazy
because WHEN i first started this podcast journey five years,
(55:13):
AGO i THOUGHT i knew. BALL i THOUGHT i knew.
Ball and then WHEN i started to dive in and
started to get people on my podcast started building up the,
BRAND i, realize oh, MAN i don't know nothing about,
ball BRO i don't know. Anything but that was. GOOD
i WAS i was. HAPPY i was, Like, okay AND
i learned and, this you, KNOW i would be, Like,
(55:34):
OKAY i never saw basketball from that. Aspect and we've
done two shows And i've learned a, Lot and just
these two shows with, You i've learned a, lot and
just from talking to, you seeing how, you you, know
elaborate your basketball knowledge On, twitter which is could sometimes
be misconstrued at, times you know with, people, right you,
know you take things out of context about BUT i
always feel like you do a good job, of you,
(55:55):
know putting it out. There you, know you know and
touch you, know you only got so MANY i know
you can have more characters now On, twitter but you
know it's sometimes hard to you, know express but you
do a good job of. That and that's WHY i
always respected. You and that's why you, Know i've had
you on twice in just two, weeks you, know you,
know BECAUSE i love getting to know more about how
(56:15):
your brain works and how you see the, game because
maybe that can help me see some things. Differently Maybe
i'm did, IT i didn't see, so And i've DONE i.
Have i've learned a lot just in two episodes and
just following you the last few months THAT i HAVE
so and checking out your. Pods well on Nickked, time
you guys do good, jobs so you, know keep up
the good, work my.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
GUY i appreciate. You. Man, YEAH i kind of have
a unique background to anyone else and it's. Twitter uh,
well one part's not your. NEED i definitely grew up
as a hood rat trying to navigate the grimy streets
Of South. Dallas BUT i also my interests outside are
hoops and initially were plays and, poetry, musicals, novels. Theater
(56:54):
it wasn't really. Sports once it got into, BASKETBALL i
just kind OF i delved in. It delved in it
more from my autobiographical point of, view WHERE i was
interested in the players in the history of TEAMS i
can still name like everyone was every roster since two.
Thousand but once again on at The time, show AND
i had to start bringing my point of view Against
(57:15):
ebony who played d one, ball Against be The motivator
who PLAYED aau, ball Against ryan And jay who still
played pickup. BALL i had to really increase my ets
and nose, knowledge AND i did so not just on
my own independent, research but also watching as much basketball
AS i possibly could get involved IN aau going to
the high school circuit and watching high school, games watching
(57:36):
NonStop ALL nba games every. DAY i don't have a
partner or kids or anything like, that not, married SO
i spend eight percent of my free time watching hoops
and the other twenty percent reading. Novels SO i just absorb
a game as much AS i. Can And i've learned
so much since joining the, Podcast so it's always a
pleasure and a, joy honestly to be able to share
What i've learned with others who care about the game
as much as.
Speaker 1 (57:57):
Me oh, yeah especially when you're in that you just,
mentioned you're surrounded by people who played d one, ball
some type of professional. Ball you got to really up your,
game you, know especially play, today right and that when
you said, THAT i did the same thing. TOO i
had to really up my knowledge to really IF i
want to be in the room with these, PEOPLE i
got to really understand the, game you.
Speaker 3 (58:17):
Know, Yeah, man that first season ON KOT i got
roasted and put through a grinder and crossed over and
fell on my ass many times talking out a turn
and saying things are just statistically factually. Wrong AND i
learned from those you, KNOW i wasn't, like, well let
me just double down on a bad, take let me
really learn WHY i was wrong and what makes it
a wrong, Take and that level of studying and humility
(58:39):
goes a long way and truly understand a game on
a higher. Level AND i have a long ways to.
Go it's one of the most my favorite things about
basketball is you never are one hundred percent. Finished like
there's always, something a new, wrinkle a new element to
learn about the game and to love it more that.
Speaker 1 (58:56):
You hit it on the head, Man like IT'S i
remember just the first couple of TIMES i started potting
or gotten to bigger, platforms like WHEN i started doing KF,
TV i read the comment SECTION i had to. Have you,
Know i'll be live And i'll be reading them, like oh,
MAN i got. Up i'm repeating words Or i'm saying
certain phrases multiple, times AND i really had to up
at BECAUSE i wanted to stay on that. LEVEL i
(59:17):
got to BE i gotta get, better get, better and you,
Know i've venture to. Learn and then like you got
the trust that you, KNOW i hosted A knicks FAN
tv show on on a big platform like, that like
JUST i WAS cp for one, day you, know so
you know you when you get to those like you
got to really up your game and then like you,
know it's just getting, that just keep getting better and,
better you, Know and LIKE i, said it happened right
(59:39):
in the. Beginning we all they said you just mentioned
like you going out of turn and you didn't know
when to say. What but over time you learn and
you want to. Learn it's not this you want to.
Learn you want, okay how DO i and you take
critics like sometimes taking criticism people take it the wrong, way,
like oh, man what are you talking? About sometimes you
got you need the, criticism like oh, no, bro you're
(59:59):
saying this to much like rephrase. That don't say the
ohs and the dead, space you, know and that's how
you get. BACK i tell people all that, time you,
know use a, repetition take take notes if people are you,
know take the, criticism, well learn from it and apply
it and then till you get your craft better and
then you can get to a. Level you, know everyone's, like,
oh how DO i get to your? Level bro's, like,
man just work work the. Criticism, well, understand keep watching
(01:00:24):
all these. Shows know how to learn the, transitions you,
know all these take THE oz and all that and
you'll be.
Speaker 3 (01:00:30):
All, right you, know but you know the best piece
of advice THAT i was ever given and THAT i
give to anyone who is trying to break Into and
this isn't just bad basketball podcast and the podcast in,
general where especially where you were the main person giving.
Dialogue used to read poetry out. Loud And i'm not
talking about rhythmic or slam. Poetry i'm talking About go
(01:00:53):
to your local half priced books or discount book, store
go buy t S, Elliott's The wasteland Or, boots and
read one of those, long fifteen to twenty page poems out.
Loud don't memorize. It read it out loud where you're
using words you don't, know which enforces you to research
what those words. Mean now you add that word into
vocabulary and your hour have already have a preference point
(01:01:14):
of speaking it out loud with confidence you can talk
about anything anywhere with. Anyone and had that confidence to
exhort your voice into this public sphere with the ability
of knowledge and. Assurance that to me is the best
piece of. Advice AND i started doing. That i've always
been a, reader BUT i grew up with really heavy speech.
Impediments no one to understand WHAT i was. Saying TILL
i was about eleven or, TWELVE i went all through
(01:01:36):
high stole and speech trying to have better addiction and better.
PRONUNCIATION i started reading poetry out, loud Specifically Complicated complex
Heavy shit by Ts Eliot nothing and improved my way
of speaking in way of pronunciation better than, that because
you're talking about. That those poems are about life and,
death about the human experiment and the human. Experience and
if you can master, that bro hoops the secondary man.
Speaker 1 (01:02:00):
Nod but LIKE i, Said, MAN i love talking hoop
with your. Brother always a. Pleasure we'll see how these,
uh these baby, nicks you, know look, today look tonight
Versus Detroit, pistons and THEN i think they Play sunday
right against The Celtics. Sunday, yeah so we'll see how they.
Look make. Sure maybe let's go next about us excited
(01:02:24):
about you, know seeing basketball, again and we'll see how
these teams. Look, lee before we, go tell the people
where they can find. You any progress you got coming?
Up what was? Yours?
Speaker 3 (01:02:35):
Man been throwing in a lot of effort utility with
the with The Nicked times, substack you can just google
Substat Lee stubido or Substack Nica time and you will
see the r Those i've been writing just trying to
get break down to what's happening with The KNICKS x
theo's get really lean the basketball, acumen play calling and defining.
Sets really trying to people a dictionary or very elementary
(01:02:59):
idea of what these things mean so that they convert
further their vocabulary understand of the. Game also have an
article on the social impact and on the court impact
Of Angel reeves For Bleacher report that will drop next,
week as well as a long essay on The knicks
