In high places, while fear and despair were the daily
fare of the unhappy minions. Hope was a luxury to

Don't let that boy get away staving he frung a stone.

By coming around, break take a details, carrying back? Did

Speaker 7 (02:34):
Been struck down.
Speaker 6 (02:36):
Let me tell you that your greasy satisfaction is premature.
I saw that young dog, and I know it was
not an accident that he got away. You all helped him,
and for that reason, you're all equally gully with him
and should be punished. However, I am prepared to be generous.
Give me his name, any one of you, and.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
The rest will be spared.
Speaker 6 (03:00):
If you don't give me that crater's name, you'll know
sum No one is to leave this marketplace until I'm
told who it was who held that stone.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Is that clear?
Speaker 6 (03:10):
I'll give you a few moments to contemplate the futility
of resistance. Then if no one has supplied me with
a boy's name, we shall begin systematically flogging you quite
at a time until every treacherous back in this marketplace
is plead. There's your prices, supply the information or several
(03:32):
of classicus.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
I've never scene of slight the streets of Teeming. Where
have all these people come from?
Speaker 5 (03:46):
There are many who claim descent from David I.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
All, I have no complaints that the crew has filled
my inn for the first time in many years.
Speaker 5 (03:52):
Yes, every room is full, Matthew, and that's to him
many away.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
You're tired, Sarah.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
You work too hard. I tire quickly these days.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Hasn't the boy helped you?
Speaker 5 (04:04):
He he helped earlier. I sent him to the marketplace.
I needed some spices.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
When was that?
Speaker 5 (04:11):
He's been gone quite a long time.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
But you know how he is.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yes, I know he has no respectful authority, And yes.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
I think he's grateful to us math.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
He spits of his gratitude, Sarah, but his words are empty.
See when he could be helping you, he's lazing in
the marketplace, taking up a thieves and cutthroats who hang
out there.
Speaker 5 (04:29):
Oh he's quick, tempered and willful, but he's not a
bed boy.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
He'll bring trouble to us, Sarah.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Oh, if he could feel closer to you, I have done.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
My best When he first came to us after your
sister's death. I wanted to think of him as my
own son. But he despises meself as good as told
me that I'm a stupid old man content to compromise
with the Romans. He has no respect for me, no love.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
Oh he's not an easy boy to know. There's a
thread of violence running through him.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
But if you'd try again, I'm too tired to speak
further of him tonight, Sarah.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
Since we had no son of our own, I.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Had hold What what could that be?
Speaker 5 (05:12):
More travelers seeking large? I suppose.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Sarah let me.
Speaker 7 (05:18):
In quickly, sir, what is this?
Speaker 3 (05:22):
No home, Matthew?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
An evening for sorrow? A fearful evening?
Speaker 6 (05:25):
What is it?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Your nephew? I knew it?
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Oh? Is he in trouble?
Speaker 8 (05:29):
I was on the edge of the crowd in the marketplace.
The soldiers were puriding, impressing all the poor country folks
who come into enroll.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Your nephew was there.
Speaker 5 (05:36):
I sent him to buy spice.
Speaker 8 (05:38):
I wasn't close to him, but I could see him clearly.
As the soldiers passed, he picked up a rock and
hurled it well. The centurion was struck, and.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
The boy did they take him, No, he escaped.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
Did the Romans know who threw the stone?
Speaker 8 (05:53):
They holdly everyone who was in the marketplace until someone
gives him the name.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
And it's only a question of time until the Romans
come here. And when they do not find the boy,
they'll take Sarah and me.
Speaker 8 (06:02):
I mustn't say, Matthew, I only wanted to warn you.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
We're a good friend, Sir. I'm sorry to have brought
you said bad news. Matthew. God be with you. Thank you,
I Sair. It was a great risk you took. God
be with you.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
He'll kill him, Matthew. There's nothing we can do decasion.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Or to save ourselves.
Speaker 5 (06:21):
He's not bad.
Speaker 3 (06:23):
He strikes out with no thought of consequences for others, Sir.
Romans has come for him.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Oh, I've never known a Roman to not so gently.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
We know nothing of him. Do you understand we're not
in sympathy with him or his ideas.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I beg your pardon. I know it is late, but
I am seeking a knight's lodging for it.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
We're full. No room's left.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
It's the same wherever we ask if there were a corner,
any shelter at all from the Knight's chill.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Didn't you hear? We have nothing for you?
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I thank you. I did not mean to anger you, sir.
It's just that we have traveled far and my wife.
Speaker 5 (06:59):
Is whe Is she with you?
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yes? And she is very tired.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
But I will not trouble you further if you have
no roule way?
Speaker 3 (07:06):
What are you thinking of, Sarah?
Speaker 5 (07:08):
There's the stable, Matthew, if they'd like to stay there.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Shadow, with all this trouble, we can't.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
The stable would be fine. Any shelter.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
I don't think we can pass.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
Oh please, Matthew. His wife seems so tired and she's
with child.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Very well, you may lodge in our stable.
Speaker 5 (07:26):
I'll take them around to the courtyard.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Man, this is most.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Kind of don't thank me, thank my wife? Oh uh,
watch your name travel for my records. I am Joseph,
son of Jacob Carpenter of Nazareth.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
If there's anything else I can do, call me. I won't.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
You've already been most kind. We thank you.
Speaker 9 (08:03):
Good night, good night, Sarah?
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Oh you thank me?
Speaker 9 (08:11):
What have you done?
Speaker 5 (08:13):
What haven't you done?
Speaker 7 (08:14):
Have the romans comfort?
Speaker 5 (08:15):
No, but also say they'll be here soon. We thought
you had gone into the humans.
Speaker 7 (08:19):
Didn't have any money, and so what are.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
You thinking of? Why did you do such a thing?
Speaker 3 (08:25):
I don't know. I couldn't help myself.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
I stood there watching them strut past.
Speaker 7 (08:30):
Pushing us off our own streets, lords of the earth,
and all of us no more than dirt under their feet.
I had to do something.
Speaker 9 (08:37):
Oh, they'll kill you.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
How did we fail you?
Speaker 7 (08:42):
I so hoped when you came to us as uncle
math you know, yes, and he disowns me.
Speaker 5 (08:47):
He's worked all his life to build something here and there.
Speaker 7 (08:50):
So long as he's comfortable, he doesn't care how the
Romans kicked the other What are you going to do?
If I could hide until I searched the inn, and
then with money and food get into the hill.
Speaker 5 (08:58):
Could you hide that the Roman wouldn't find you.
Speaker 7 (09:01):
There's a place in the stable.
Speaker 9 (09:03):
No, no, you.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
Can't hide in the stable. There are lodgers, lodgers.
Speaker 7 (09:08):
Meaning his greed uncle Matthew now rents the stable.
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Again was falling. This full carpenter from Nazareth came to
the door, and I persuaded your uncle to let them
stay in the stable. His wife is with him, and
she just gave birth to a son.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
And it's hopeless.
Speaker 7 (09:25):
I might as well give myself up to the Romans.
But I'll go down throwing more Rotto.
Speaker 5 (09:30):
No, No, we'll talk to your uncle. Maybe he'll be
able to help you out.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
I don't count on his health.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
Well, come inside. At least someone will see you standing
here in the courtyard. Now, come in.
Speaker 7 (09:56):
I shouldn't have come back. It would have been better
to starve in the hills, are dying, the street fighting
a row.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
No one's keeping you here, Matthew. Wherever he goes he
brings grief. Everything he touches turns to violent.
Speaker 7 (10:06):
Because I'm not content to live like a slave, because
I'm ready to give up my soft life, the security
and a fight for freedom, because I think of someone
besides myself.
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Or the most selfish kind of person to cut a
dashing figure, to set yourself up as a hero. You
bring the Roman life down upon dozens of innocent backs.
Speaker 7 (10:23):
Someone has to strike out at them.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
No one beats the Romans at their own game. Hit
one of them, and they'll crucify a dozen of us
because you hurled one stone. We're all marked as criminals
and may die for it.
Speaker 7 (10:35):
I don't care. As long as I live, I'll fight,
and if it means killing, I'll kill.
Speaker 5 (10:39):
Oh, don't talk that way.
Speaker 7 (10:42):
You've gotten used to compromising. Well that's not for me.
I've chosen my way freedom at any cost.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Your way will carry you to a Roman cross.
Speaker 5 (10:51):
If not now, later, Oh, we mustn't waste time in quarreling.
We must plan his escape.
Speaker 7 (10:57):
I can never get through the gates now.
Speaker 5 (10:58):
He thought of hiding in.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
This but the travelers from Nazareth a there.
Speaker 5 (11:02):
The carpenter looks to be a kindly man. If I
asked him explained about the boy, I'd.
Speaker 7 (11:08):
Not be in their way. I could hide in the
straw behind the men.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
The Romans will find him no matter where you hide him,
and it will mean that we must.
Speaker 7 (11:14):
Lie to them.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Matthew, he's my dead sister's only son, right, hide.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Him in the stable if the Nazarene will let you.
But don't expect to save him, Sarah, don't expect to
save him. Open in the name of Caesar, Eh, are
you the keeper of this inn?
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Matthew by name?
Speaker 3 (11:41):
I am? Where's your nephew?
Speaker 6 (11:43):
He's wondered for the murderous assault upon one of my officers.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
My nephew, Why, sir, he hasn't been home since early afternoon.
Speaker 6 (11:50):
You're lying, and it will do you no good to
you only waste my turn.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Search the end. My guests were all asleep, silent.
Speaker 6 (11:58):
They should be honored to on the Emperor's order. You
could have saved them this discomfort by telling us where
you've hidden.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
This bloody as leapy, sid I'm innocent in all this.
I should like to think you were. They tell me
you've kept a good reputation in the past. My nephew
was a wild boy. We tried to guide him, sire,
but he listens to others.
Speaker 6 (12:17):
To those who preach rebellion in the marketplace, who sit
in their rags and dream of a new kingdom.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
The boy is not in any of the room, sir.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
What about the.
Speaker 6 (12:24):
Upbuildings in the ground.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
There's only a small stable in the courtyard. Search the stable, yes, sir,
but there's a poor carpenter there is. His wife has
just had a child. Do you think well? Business must
be good in keeping you even rent your stable. Everyone
has come to be enrolled. I think I'll have a
look at this stable myself. You're wasting your time, sire.
(12:46):
Let me be the judge of that. Show me this stable,
m Carpenter, man of Nazareth. Yes, who calls me? It
(13:08):
is the innkeeper. There's been trouble in the town. The
soldiers seek my nephew. They asked to such the stable.
My wife is resting.
Speaker 6 (13:16):
And told you have a son, Carpenter, a child was
born to marry. He lies now in the major. You
forgive me if I look in. Of course, I'll not
disturb your wife nor the child.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
For Give me, Carpenter. We force you into our trouble.
You know that if the boy is found, you will
be implicated. You did not refuse us haven. After we
had been turned from a dozen other doors, we could
not refuse him.
Speaker 6 (13:39):
Carpenter, you have a most unusual child, a new baby,
and yet there is something about him.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
Congratulations.
Speaker 6 (13:56):
It seems, in Keeper, that you were telling the truth.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Lucky that you were. My wife and I are deep
be sorry, sire, that our nephew has made this trouble.
We'll catch up with him.
Speaker 6 (14:03):
It may take time, but these violent young fools always
pay our price. He struck once, he'll strike again, and
eventually he'll pay I know, sire. Carpenter, by apologies again
for disturbing your wife and the child, good night, good night.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
He's not here. They turned to the garrison at once.
Speaker 3 (14:27):
They're leaving. Your nephew is safe, but he must still
get past the guards of the gate and into the hills.
He will find a way, you know, Carpenter. I never
before heard a Roman soldier apologize, but he did to
you for disturbing your wife and child. Strange.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
I'll tell your nephew it is safe to come out.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
Now. Wait, listen, some new disturbance, or perhaps the soldiers
are coming back. No, no, these are not soldiers. They
look to be shepherds. Yes, and Sarah's with them. Sarah,
what is it, Matthew?
Speaker 5 (15:05):
These are shepherds been the hills. They have come into
Bethlehem because because because an angel of the Lord appeared.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
To us, an angel of the Lord who.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
You don't believe us and the truth. Friend, we are
hard pressed to believe.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
What we have seen this night, Uncle Matthew.
Speaker 7 (15:20):
And the soldier's gone.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yes, they're gone. These men are shepherd.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
With a wonderful story to tell you.
Speaker 7 (15:25):
I have no time for wonderful stories. I must leave
Battlehem before dawn. Wait.
Speaker 5 (15:29):
Wait, listen to what they've seen.
Speaker 8 (15:31):
We were resting in the hills. Some of us dozed.
Then suddenly there was a sound sound as if a
thousand hands struck a thousand liars. And at the same
time there was a dazzling light, as if a star
had burst.
Speaker 3 (15:45):
We were frightened, and the.
Speaker 5 (15:46):
Light it was the Angel.
Speaker 8 (15:48):
Yes, and the Angel said, don't be afraid, for behold,
I bring you good news of great joy. For there's
been born to you today in the town of David,
a savior who is.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
Christ the Lord.
Speaker 7 (16:00):
Sir, I can't wase my time listening.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
While go on, a savior who is Christ the Lord.
Speaker 8 (16:05):
And this shall be a sign to you. You will
find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in
a manger.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
In a manger, Matthew, the child born to the carpenter
his wife.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
Yes, what happened, then, Shepherd.
Speaker 8 (16:22):
Then way we had seen but one angel, there were thousands.
The sky was ablaze with their glory, and they were
singing until the very hill seemed to move with the
majesty of their music. Glory to God in the highest
and peace on earth to men of good will.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
You you think they spoke of the Messiah, our deliverer.
Speaker 5 (16:42):
We do.
Speaker 8 (16:43):
We've come to Bethlehem to see this thing that has
come to pass.
Speaker 4 (16:46):
Good night.
Speaker 5 (16:47):
A child who was born in this stable. He lies
now in the manger.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Carpenter of Nazareth. You have heard what these good shepherds
have said. I have heard.
Speaker 5 (16:59):
Nay, may we see the child again.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
It is not for me to keep you from seeing him.
But please remember that she is very tired.
Speaker 9 (17:09):
You'll remember, Matthew.
Speaker 5 (17:25):
Can it be the Messiah born here in our stable?
Speaker 3 (17:32):
If we are to believe.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
The shepherds, surely they couldn't have all dream the vision.
And the child is strangely beautiful.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
He is no ordinary child, Sir.
Speaker 4 (17:43):
H For him to come now in the midst of
our trouble a promise.
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Of hope, and it's like the song of the angels,
Peace on earth to men of goodwill and Sarah. I'll
come back you.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
Oh, oh, I forgot I know how I can slip
past the guards of the game. I'll go out with
the shepherds. I'll never be noticed as long as I
stay with them.
Speaker 3 (18:01):
Oh, I suppose that's best. Here. Here, take this purse.
There's enough money in it to last for a while.
Thank you, uncle. Someday I'll repay you.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
You can repay us. Now, promise that you won't make
any more trouble. I can't make that promise. I wouldn't
keep it. My course, is said answer.
Speaker 6 (18:21):
The Romans will learn to fear me, and someday I'll
show our people a way to freedom.
Speaker 3 (18:25):
The way to freedom isn't hate.
Speaker 5 (18:28):
It could be his way, Yes, the way of the
child in the stable.
Speaker 7 (18:35):
You mean that wild story the shepherd's told the angels
and the song of peace.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Yes, peace on earth to men of goodwill. If this
child were a savior, I leave you to your foolish hopes.
Speaker 9 (18:47):
Uncle.
Speaker 7 (18:48):
Only the Romans preach peace because it's the way to
keep us slaves. I want no part of their towards peace.
Speaker 3 (18:55):
Goodbye, answer, goodbye.
Speaker 5 (18:58):
Be careful.
Speaker 8 (18:59):
We must reat to our flocks, but we'll tell all
of the wondrous things we have seen here tonight.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
My nephew begs to walk with you. Good.
Speaker 8 (19:05):
Oh, but he leaves us now for Jerusalem. He's welcome. Come, brothers,
We must hurry. Soon the dawn will be with us.
Speaker 5 (19:12):
Goodbye, Goodbye, he's gone, nephew.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
We couldn't help him, Sarah. His way is set. So
the good shepherds leave the child sleeps, and so does
his mother. What of your nephew, my friend, he goes
with the shepherds. They'll see him safely through the gates.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Carpenter, If Carpenter you are, what have you to say
of what the angels told.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
This child was sent to save our people.
Speaker 3 (19:45):
I want to believe this, but for the messiahy be
born here in a stable if his ways are not
of this world, and he does not seek to save
us by worldly power.
Speaker 5 (19:55):
To save us, and this too is the dream of.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
The Barabbas, your nephew, Yes, but the dream of Barrabas
in the way of this child are not the same.
They'll never cross again because Barabbas thinks freedom can be
bought only through violence. And this child comes as the
prince of peace.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
Pray for my nephew, Capentru of Nandrus, Pray that someday
Barabbas may know that peace which comes to the men
of goodwill.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
May we all know that peace. May we be worthy
of you.
Speaker 5 (20:29):
Listen, what is it, Matthew.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
It was almost as if for a moment I heard
that mighty chorus of angels making that beautiful promise again.
Perhaps that music will be heard by all men who
can find the courage in their hearts to believe that
only love can free us. Yes, only love.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
This is Irene done again.
Speaker 4 (21:15):
I think the charming Christmas story we just heard, or
perhaps I should call it a profound Christmas story, strikes
a chord of yearning in all our hearts, especially at
this season. We all want peace so very desperately, peace
in the world, but also peace in our families, Peace
(21:36):
in our hearts and in our individual lives, the kind
of peace that the world cannot give, because without God's grace,
the world does not possess peace, and no one can
give what he hasn't done. Family Theater believes that to
find true and equitable and abiding peace, whether among nations
(21:59):
or in family, we must all of us turn to
the divine source, the only fountain head of peace, which
is God. Peace on earth. Yes, but note the condition
to men of good will. That is why Family Theater
urges us all to pray, to pray with good will,
(22:22):
and to pray together as families. Only in that way
have we any chance to attain peace. The family that
prays together stays together, and the nation at prayer is
a nation at peace.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams
of from Hollywood. Family theaterre has brought.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
You The Crossroads of Christmas, starring Victor Jory and Rita Johnson.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
I ring Done was your Hostess. Others in our cast.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Were Eddie Firestone, Pat mcgeean, Howard Culver, Tudor Owen, and
Michael Hayes. The script was written by John McGreevy, with
