Speaker 3 (03:02):
Keep away from it.
Speaker 4 (03:04):

hold off a tribe of Indians.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
I know what I'm doing. Yeah, and MA, get a
good look at your.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
In the yellow light that came from the one globe
dangling from the ceiling. The man looked at me, and
I looked at him. He was about fifty. His face
was drawn and pinched, his hands shook, and his eyes
squinty and sharp, slid over me. I didn't like him.
Then he seemed to be satisfied and sat down on
the chair opposite me.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Yeah, sure, you're after adventure.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Eh, that's right.
Speaker 3 (03:38):

Philippine Arners?
Speaker 4 (04:00):
It's a man's sized eron.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Would you go? That's all I want to know? Who'd
you go?
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Well? That all depends on what I've got to do.
There's anything crooked? The answer is no, there's nothing crooked.
I want you to go there and bring back something
that belongs to me. Here's something I've got to have.
What's stopping you from going yourself?
Speaker 3 (04:16):
Look at me? I'm sick.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
It could be, but you're sure there's no other reason.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
What do you mean?
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Well, the balls and the locks and the door, the
fact that you said in your letter you wouldn't be
at this address after tonight. The shade's drawn. You were
afraid I was following? Sure, so two and two are four,

Speaker 4 (05:07):
I don't care about that. Who Oh, the money doesn't
interest me?
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Does you need money?
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Does it?
Speaker 4 (05:16):
I must have said something very funny.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
You did Holiday? You did? You see?
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Ten thousand dollars doesn't mean anything to you?
Speaker 4 (05:24):
No, it doesn't. I'd better explain you. See, I'm a writer.
The stories I get. In response to that box thirteen ad,
you answered, well, they pay me amply for my efforts. E.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
It's one boring minute.
Speaker 4 (05:36):
But will you go and do what?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
I'll give you the name of a man from you're
to contact in Manila.
Speaker 3 (05:42):

Speaker 4 (05:43):
Now than what happens.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
That will take care of yourself.
Speaker 4 (05:47):
Why do you want me to bring back I told.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
You something that belongs to me something. I've got to have,
something that means life.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Or death to me that important.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
We're wasting time. Will you do it?
Speaker 2 (05:57):
It's adventuring And when you get back, I'll give you
ten thousand dollars.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Do anything you want with it. I don't care, but
bring me what I want.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Why do I have to leave as soon.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
As you can?
Speaker 4 (06:09):
Oh? One more question? What where are you going to
get the ten thousand dollars? Well, I'll have it when.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
You get back.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
I see Do I come here?
Speaker 2 (06:23):
No, I won't be here. I've got to keep moving
because he hey.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Never mind.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
When you get back, put another ad below the one
for box thirteen.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
To see you back, I'll get in.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
Touch with you. And the name of the man I'm
to meet him, Manilla.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
You'll find him at the address on on this slip
of paper. He's expecting someone from me. And here, take
this envelope. Don't open it until you get in touch
with the man.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
Sealed instructions.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Huh, yes, and holiday take good care of that envelope.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Hide it.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
If he knew you were carrying it, he might kill you.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
And with that little gem as a bonevoyage from Krell,
I left him. When I got home, I took the
envelope he had given me and had it sewn into
the lining of my jacket. Four days later I was Manila.
After a nice, pleasant trip on the plane, I went
to a hotel and registered. Later that evening, I took
a cab to the address of Krell's man. It was
(07:28):
a tiny, ramshackle place in the street that was so
narrow the cab couldn't get through, so I had to
get out and walk. And right there is where I
should have said quits to the whole thing. That all
familiar feeling began tingling my spine. As usual, Foolishly, I
paid no attention to it. I got to the house.
(07:51):
There was no answer. I tried the door. It was
pitch black inside. I closed the door behind me. I
stood there for a couple of seconds, trying to see
through the blackness winds. Who's that?
Speaker 8 (08:10):
Just stay? Where are?
Speaker 4 (08:13):
The light went on and facing me was a man
with a gun, and from where I stood, the muzzle
was neatly in line with my third rib. The man
looked at me for a moment, then.
Speaker 8 (08:24):
Turn around back to me.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
See idea.
Speaker 8 (08:27):
I don't know yet, but we'll see. Okay, face me.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Who are you?
Speaker 8 (08:36):
Never mind? Dad? Who are you?
Speaker 4 (08:38):
Dan? Holiday?
Speaker 8 (08:39):
Doesn't mean a thing? Look down at the Oh, yeah,
we got company, sergeant, So I.
Speaker 4 (08:44):
See, sergeant, what is this? Look? I came here to
see someone?
Speaker 8 (08:49):
Uh huh. What's the name of the person you came
to see?
Speaker 4 (08:52):
I don't know if.
Speaker 8 (08:54):
You don't know this man, why did you come here?
Come on talk?
Speaker 4 (08:58):
I don't see any reason why I should.
Speaker 8 (09:00):
Give you a reason if I told you we're police.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (09:04):
You don't know much, do you? Why did you come
to see this man? You don't know?
Speaker 4 (09:09):
On business?
Speaker 8 (09:10):
What kind?
Speaker 4 (09:11):
I was sent here by whom a man named Joseph
crell crell well well will. Evidently that explains a lot
of things, doesn't Okay?
Speaker 8 (09:22):
It could and it couldn't. You say your name is Holiday.
That's right, all right, mister Holliday. Step over to this
other room with me. Come on, open the door, sergeant,
go ahead, and Holiday?
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Oh do you have to keep that gun on me?
Speaker 8 (09:38):
It's better that way. I want to see him. Man. Yeah,
i'd look on the floor behind the bed. Now you've
seen him.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Who killed him?
Speaker 8 (09:53):
We'd like to know that too.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
You didn't think I did.
Speaker 8 (09:57):
Maybe you'd like to talk now, tell us why you
came here, Why you had to see Carlos Carlos, Yeah,
the name of the deceased? All right, Lieutenant Lieutenant Keith
Manila Police. This is Sergeant Henrica Cotis, Okay.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
I was sent here by Joseph Krell. I was to
see this Carlos. Why. I don't know. I was to
give him an envelope? Where is it at the hotel?
Speaker 8 (10:15):
And we'll find out about that later. Now, Thish Krell?
Why did he send you?
Speaker 4 (10:19):
He couldn't come himself. But whatever it was he wanted
me to bring back. He said it meant life and
death to him. He offered me ten thousand dollars to
get it for him.
Speaker 8 (10:28):
I was in the envelope.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (10:30):
Is that your stock answer?
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Oh? Look, I'm telling the truth. If you don't believe it,
check with the police and the States verify my identity.
Speaker 8 (10:36):
We will, But first let's get something straight.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
All that would be a pleasure.
Speaker 8 (10:40):
Crell sent you for something that was worth ten thousand
dollars to him? Did anyone else know about it?
Speaker 4 (10:46):
Well hardly?
Speaker 8 (10:46):
Why hardly?
Speaker 4 (10:48):
Because Crell said I might be killed, and.
Speaker 8 (10:53):
You didn't talk to anyone on the plane about it. No, okay,
we'll get back to your hotel and check on a
few things. Sergeants, stay here, no one in or out.
Meet me at headquarters as soon as you can get away.
See now, holiday, we'll see how much trouble you're really in.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
On the way back to my hotel, Keith didn't say much,
neither to die. But I was doing a lot of thinking,
and suddenly it hit me something Keith had asked me,
something he had no right to ask, and something he
couldn't have asked unless I looked at him. He was
smiling to himself. Okay, I had to take a chance.
(11:37):
Oh by the way, Lieutenant, what that building over there
where just you're right, look out the window.
Speaker 8 (11:45):
What building are you talking about?
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Driver?
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Driver stopped the cab? What is it? O? My friend?
He met with an accident.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
He's we should maybe go to a doctor.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
No, I don't think so. But when he comes to were,
ask him a question for me, will you? But yeah,
just ask him how he knew I came to Manila
on a plane and.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Now back to sealed instructions Another Box thirteen Adventures starring
Alan Ladd as Dan Holiday.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
So there I was out in the middle of a
big puzzle and a murder. Sure Keith had killed Carlos
to keep me from getting to him. Keith must have
followed me from the States. Oh, it was smart of
him not to play his cards on the plane or
as soon as I got to Manila. He waited until
I tried to contact Carlos. Then he planned to get
the envelope away from me without any more fuss or bother.
(13:06):
Now I had to get back to the hotel and
get that envelope before Keith came too, because when he did,
he was going to be very, very nasty. So back
at the hotel, I had a bell hop go to
my room and bring down the jacket.
Speaker 6 (13:19):
Is this the right one, mister Holliday?
Speaker 4 (13:21):
Oh yeah, yeah, that's the one. Here you are, thank you, sir.
Speaker 6 (13:25):
Will that be all?
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Uh uh oh wait a minute, yes, sir, Come here
behind this pillar. Something wrong, sir, yeah, there is. Look
over at that entrance. Do you see that big man
standing there, white hat, gray suit, Yes, sir, I uh,
I don't want to meet him.
Speaker 8 (13:45):
Oh, I see look you.
Speaker 4 (13:47):
Go through the lobby paging me. He'll follow you to
see where I am. Lead him a merry chase. Got it?
Speaker 6 (13:53):
I got it, mister Holliday. Okay, get going, aging, mister Holliday.
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Mister Dan Holiday, h the bell hop did it up? Good?
Keith fell out for the gag and followed the bell
hop just far enough behind him so that he could
surprise me if he saw me. But he didn't.
Speaker 8 (14:09):
Holiday.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
I ducked out of the entrance and took a cab
at police headquarters there.
Speaker 6 (14:13):
Uh, let me get this straight, mister Holiday. You say
this Keith pretended to be an opicer.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
That's right, the team Marinus. But why so he could
get this envelope away from me? He'd already killed once
to get it. Maybe he thought killing me would attract
too much attention.
Speaker 6 (14:28):
But this envelope?
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Where is it?
Speaker 3 (14:29):
And what is in it?
Speaker 4 (14:31):
And I'm going to see that right away? Have you
got a knife? Yes? Here? Oh? Thanks? Well, this was
a good jacket there it is? Uh?
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Open it?
Speaker 4 (14:46):
Sure? Well? What's this?
Speaker 6 (14:52):
May I see it?
Speaker 4 (14:53):
Here? You are? Hm? This is very curious, mister Holiday.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
It looks like.
Speaker 4 (14:59):
A a map. It's half a map lute of marinos.
Carlos had the other hair of course, of course, but
a map of what and to what to whatever? Krall wanted?
Speaker 6 (15:11):
Quall, Yeah, that's the name. Why you did not mention
his name before? Why not?
Speaker 4 (15:18):
I didn't think it was important to the Pilipinos.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
It is very important.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
I don't get it.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
Why during the Japanese occupation of the islands, Joseph Crell
was a collaborator.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
Oh no, wonder he didn't dare come back. But the
rest of this business, how does it fit in? I
do not know as yet. However, I think I have
an idea, mister Holliday. Yes, what's that?
Speaker 6 (15:41):
Before the war, before the Japanese imbrasion, Crell was a gambler.
It was known that he ran a gambling house with
a partner, partner Keith, that could be, although Keith was
not his name.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
Then, sir, what's the rest of your idea?
Speaker 6 (15:55):
The partner fled when the Japanese came, Crale did not. Now,
I think the partner would like to find Crayle, mister Holliday,
we must find the other half of this map.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
Well, Keith has it?
Speaker 6 (16:07):
I know that? And find Keith that would be much
easier said than done, unless unless you'll tell him, Unless
you help, mister Holliday, I do not think that Keith
will suspect that you have come to the police.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
He followed me from the States. He must think I'm
in with Croll. If he thinks that, then he think
I wouldn't dare go to the place exactly. So, Oh,
I see, you want to tie me out as live bait?
Is that it?
Speaker 6 (16:37):
It is the only way to get him, because he
will come up to this holp of the map. Of
course you can refuse, and I do not say that
I will blame you.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
No, I guess not. But well, you've got yourself a
piece of live bait, and I hope it stays that way.
It was the only way to get Keith. Besides, I
was very curious as to what that map meant and
why getting something meant life and death to Joseph Krell.
(17:09):
So I checked out of the hotel and with one
of Lieutenant Burno's men following at a distance, I took
a room on the other side of town and waited.
An hour passed two. Then, when it was beginning to
look as though our mister Keith was smarter than we'd figured.
Come in.
Speaker 8 (17:31):
Well, hello, it's the holiday. You've given me a lot
of trouble.
Speaker 4 (17:36):
You don't want an apology, do you know?
Speaker 8 (17:38):
All I wants the other half of that map?
Speaker 4 (17:40):
Oh? Sure, you're knock on the door. I say, come in,
give you the map. And that's that. Very simple?
Speaker 8 (17:44):
Yeah, very simple. I'm very smart.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
But you don't think i'd have the map on me
do you?
Speaker 8 (17:49):
Maybe not? But you know where to get it.
Speaker 4 (17:51):
Let's go. I'll wait a minute.
Speaker 8 (17:52):
What four?
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Why uh? Why don't we make a deal? What kind Well,
neither half of the map is any good without the other.
And I'm sure you haven't got yours with you.
Speaker 8 (18:02):
Oh but I have.
Speaker 4 (18:06):
I see. Was it very hard getting it from Carlos?
Speaker 8 (18:09):
No, not very No harder than it will be to
get the half you got ull ak.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
We can still make a deal. Keith or whatever your
name is, Keith will do. Okay, how about it?
Speaker 8 (18:21):
Maybe you're smart at that. Okay, let's go after you holiday,
and don't forget this. It's loaded.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
You make it easy to remember.
Speaker 8 (18:31):
Yeah, I can make it very easy to forget by
pulling the trigger. None of the back.
Speaker 4 (18:35):
Way out Day, the back way back.
Speaker 8 (18:37):
Way Holiday How dumb do you think I am? Or
how smart do you think you are? You forgot all
about it? I'm Rinki, didn't you?
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Oh the side?
Speaker 8 (18:46):
Yeah? Here this door you see? En Rinki followed us
away from Carlos place. He knew you slug me in
the cab.
Speaker 4 (18:55):
Enrinki seems to have done all right.
Speaker 8 (18:57):
Just perfect. Get in this car. Go ahead on Rinki
looking for your cop friends holiday cops. Yeah, you see
when you pull that bell hot trick at the hotel,
en Rinki was outside. He followed you. So you go
to the police. It's too bad holiday but there are
(19:20):
no police.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
I see, and Riki took care of him. Is that it?
Speaker 8 (19:24):
En Riki? He has been very busy. Now let's have
that half you gun.
Speaker 4 (19:29):
I told you I haven't got it.
Speaker 8 (19:31):
Whitch Starling. It was to be bait for me, wasn't it.
You and Marinas were so sure you'd had me, you
didn't bother to leave the half at headquarters. Let's have
it now.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Keith looked at me, sure he knew he held Alias's
and he held the gun right at my head. All
there was nothing to do but drag out my half
of the map and give it to him. He looked
at it, held it against his half. They matched.
Speaker 8 (19:55):
All right, Holiday, this is the end of the line.
You get off here.
Speaker 4 (19:59):
What do you mean you think?
Speaker 8 (20:01):
Take the next turn right on, Riki and slow down
a little. Mister Holliday is leaving us for good.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
Keith meant it, and Riki started to take the next
turn to the right. But I had a different idea.
I got the handle of the door, twisted it hard
and jumped, took the whole fall on my shoulder, rolled
over into the ditcheral side of the road. Keith jumped
out of the car, stout of tor messure as he came.
And then.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
You you are not hurting, mister Holliday.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
No, no, not lieutenant. Oh I'm glad we are a
majority of two lieutenant marinos. But Keith, he is taking
care of How did you get here by.
Speaker 6 (20:49):
Putting two strings to my bow? Mister Holliday? The one
man I had followed you was how shall we say
a decoy?
Speaker 4 (20:56):
Well let's say it and be very happy. Is he
all right?
Speaker 8 (20:58):
Well?
Speaker 6 (20:59):
A little lump on your head, but all right, you
know this was very close. Yes, I am very sorry,
mister Holiday, but I did not expect mister Keith to
have a car. However, all is well, that ends well.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Yeah sure, now how about that map?
Speaker 6 (21:13):
Come? We will see about that now.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
Where the two halves the map? He went to work.
Krell had hidden something in the hills back of Manila,
admit before the Japanese invasion. Three hours later, lieuten of
Marinus and I sat on a box and watched his
men digging into the earth, and Marinas talked.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
You see this, Carlos was crowded servant. When Kraill left
the Philippine Islands, he left hopped the.
Speaker 4 (21:37):
Map in case he was caught. A half map would
do no one any good. And that is right. Keith
was Kraill's partner.
Speaker 6 (21:44):
He left trail stayed to become a collaborator.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Playing two games at once. The Japs won. He'd been
with them, the Allies one. He'd have what he had
here exactly, and we have found it.
Speaker 6 (21:58):
Please box, iron box, sergeant, break the log. Yes, sir,
mister Holliday, you may have the honor of opening it.
Speaker 4 (22:12):
Oh, thanks, sir. I looked at the lid and unwrapped
a large package done up in waterproof oil silk. It
is quite a lot of money, yes, quite a lot
of money, perhaps half a million, mister Holiday, from the
looks of it. Yes, and it all belongs to mister Crayle,
a man who betrayed my people and his country. We
(22:37):
shall be happy to hold it in trust for him
until he cares to come and claim it. Yeah, I
think I'll take him back. Something else, though, something else?
What that?
Speaker 8 (22:50):
That?
Speaker 4 (22:51):
What that over there? That, mister Holliday, you are a poet.
I left Manila the next day with Lieutana Marinos saying
goodbye with me? Was the iron box I'd come across
(23:11):
the ocean to guess, But in it was something a
great deal different from what Krell expected back in the States.
I put an ad below my box thirteen AD. I waited, and.
Speaker 5 (23:22):
Then here it is, mister Holliday. Right below the box
thirteen ad. It says, Holiday, come to one, two, five
six chickering place.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
Okay, that said Susie.
Speaker 8 (23:33):
But why don't they arrest mister Crall arrest?
Speaker 4 (23:38):
I think we've got something much better, Susie, much better.
Who is she Holiday? Let me in?
Speaker 3 (24:00):
If you got it? Did you get it?
Speaker 4 (24:02):
Yes? Here it is?
Speaker 3 (24:03):
That's it. Yes, that's it, honey. Will you turn wrong
with this so very long.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
I know you have, and I'm very anxious to see
what you think about it.
Speaker 6 (24:14):
You didn't open it.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
The luck looks like it was opened.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
Why don't you look inside? Crow?
Speaker 3 (24:21):
You've saved his key.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
Oh, your ex partner is dead. Now you won't have
to worry about him killing you for double crossing him.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
Good good, I pay you will, holiday, I pay you will.
Speaker 4 (24:33):
Well? What who is this?
Speaker 3 (24:35):
Who is this?
Speaker 4 (24:37):
H surprised?
Speaker 2 (24:40):
It's God nice your doging?
Speaker 4 (24:43):
But I brought you something in place of the money flow,
the flag of the new Philippine Republic, the flag of
the people you betrayed.
Speaker 2 (24:53):
I kill you.
Speaker 4 (24:57):
A very sick, don't you? Crow? Very sick? You've never
lived to stand trial, but you could have lived well
and all that money Pea certainly crowd. Oh, here's the
other half of the map, which is why you wrote
to me originally. I've not double crossed you. You can
(25:21):
have your treasure anytime, Crow, anytime you want to claim it.
Where is it in Manila? And anytime you want to
go back and claim it. I think the people there
will be very glad to see you.
Speaker 8 (25:57):
A half million dollars? Wow, who does it belong to?
Speaker 4 (26:02):
Mister Holliday, mister crell. But I don't think you'll ever
claim it.
Speaker 5 (26:07):
Geez, but what about him?
Speaker 8 (26:09):
Where'll he go? Well, what'll he do?
Speaker 4 (26:11):
I don't know, Susy, and I don't think I really
care about a man who would double cross his own country.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
Well, anyway, it was exciting for you, you know. I
wish I could take a plain trip like that sometime.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Applied good Night, Susy.
