Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, honey, take a look over there is that?
Speaker 2 (00:02):
No, it couldn't be.
Speaker 3 (00:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (00:04):
Let's ask excuse me, are you?
Speaker 5 (00:06):
Adam Graham the.
Speaker 6 (00:07):
Very same And this is my old time radio snack wagon.
Speaker 7 (00:19):
Welcome to the Old Time Radio snack Wagon, where we
serve up a bite sized portion of old time radio.
And now here's your snack wagon host Adam Graham.
Speaker 6 (00:30):
Earlier this season we presented a bit of Popeye. Today
we are visiting with yet another longstanding comic series. Archie
Andrews is one of the longest enduring franchises that has
been around in one form or another, and nearly every
(00:51):
generation has met a version of this franchise. I remember
the new Archie's cartoon from the nineteen eighties. Older listeners
might remember the filmation series from the sixties, and the
younger generation had a dark and gritty reboot called Riverdale.
Because of course, but it all started with the comics,
(01:15):
and boy did those leave an impression. Long after other
comic magazines were relegated to specialty stores, Archie's one hundred
page digest were available to anyone at a checkout stand.
Although I think it's been many a year since i've
seen one. Of course, Archie comic state back to nineteen
(01:37):
forty one, just three years after Superman premiered, and the
comics publishers have rarely met a crossover that they wouldn't do.
Archie has made family friendly appearances with the teenage Mutant,
Ninja Turtles, the nineteen sixties Batman, and even The Punisher, Yes,
the Punisher and a family friendly story, as well as
(02:00):
a series of Christian themed Archie comics in the nineteen
seventies and eighties which were published through Spire Comics, and
of course, more recently they had a bit of a
darker crossover with a predator franchise. Archie Andrews hit radio
not too long after it hit newsstands, and unlike some
(02:20):
other comic strip adaptations which were quickly banished back to
newsprint only like Blondie, Archie had a long term runover radio,
lasting from nineteen forty three to fifty three. The series
became a Saturday morning mainstay. It was also half an
(02:42):
hour in length, so it would not generally be a
good candidate for a podcast. However, they did do a
crossover with the YMCA, who released this special fifteen minute
program to promote its camp program. So here from May seventh,
nineteen forty six, is a day at camp.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Hello, Hello, jaghead, this is Archie. Come over right away.
Speaker 8 (03:17):
It's a matter of life or death.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
R relaxed, Archie.
Speaker 9 (03:21):
Relax, yes, indeed, and you relax, two folks while you
visit Archie Andrews of comic strip Fame, his family and
his friends. You know Archie, and now he comes to
you with all his gang in a YMCA presentation A
day at Camp. Well, as we look in on the
(03:49):
friendly little city of Riverdale, we find Archie engaged in
the great American pastime, sitting on the porch of the
girl next door, whiling away a Sunday afternoon.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Well, Betty, schools almost out? Yes? How many more days?
Speaker 5 (04:02):
Well? I haven't figured it out exactly, Betty, but roughly speaking,
there's about forty one hours, fifteen minutes and thirty seconds
of school time left this term.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Archie, have you made any plans for the summer? Sure,
I'm going to Stephens Lake where the folks this year?
Oh you Archie reading? Oh that's wonderful. But aren't you
going back to the YMCA camping with more lake? No,
I'd rather be at Stephens like this summer? Why Archie? Well,
Stephen's Lake is a beautiful lake? What else? A scenery? Swell?
What else? And it's always cool there? What else?
Speaker 5 (04:33):
And a lot of people I like will be there, Archie,
lots of people. In fact, I hear Veronica's family. He's
taking the cottage right next door to ours.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Oh I see, did I say something? Oh? No, Archie,
not a thing. Oh. I'd better go see if I
can help mother.
Speaker 8 (04:50):
See you later, Rochie.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
Oh gee, wish a girl is one thing a fellow
like me will never understand.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Mary.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yes, Mary, I have been thinking perhaps we ought to
have Archie go to the YMCA camp at Whitmore Lake
this summer.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
No, what made you decide that? Do you? Well? I
don't know.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Tom Jones was telling me he's sending juughhead to camp again,
and I think it's a good idea. They teach the
kids how to get along with each other, how to
keep out of mischief, and if there's one lesson Archie need,
that's it.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Well.
Speaker 10 (05:27):
Hell, perhaps you're right, dear, Well, of course I'm right
they did.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
Don't you think we ought to run out of the
lake tomorrow and got the cottage ready for the summer.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Oh, your mother and I were just talking about that, Archie.
Oh really, we're thinking you might like to go to
camp again this year. What I had to talk with
Sam Blake at the y. They still have room at
Whitmore Lake for a few more campers. Oh, no doubt,
I'm not interested in camp this year.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Well why not? Son?
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Didn't you have fun at camp?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Yeah, Dad's sure it's a swell camp. But well, I'd
rather sooner go to Stevens Camp this summer.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Oh, Jughead is scrying to camp, Archie. Yeah, I know, Dad,
but I'd still rather go to Stephens Lake. Will fret
if the boy doesn't want to go?
Speaker 1 (06:06):
All right, all right, Son, I won't press the pine.
You may go to Stephens Lake.
Speaker 5 (06:10):
Gee?
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Thanks dead, After all, it's your decision.
Speaker 5 (06:22):
You ver Hello, Veronica, Wait you'll go.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
I was on my way way to see Jack Veronica,
bet anything Spacial, Yeah, sir, I.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
Wanted to talk to him about this summer. Oh yeah,
you know what almost just happened?
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Why my dad almost wanted me to go to camp?
And what Morlay?
Speaker 9 (06:39):
Really?
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Wow, that's quit incident coincidence? Yes, I'm going to camp
and whit Morley. Yeah, I'm going to Camp Mini Tanka.
Can't many? Taker? You mean right next door to the
Why camp? But Jeeva, I mean I thought your folks
took a cottage at Stephen's Lake. They did, but I'm
not going. It's too too dull at Steve Wachie, Where
(07:02):
are you rushing off to home? Veronica home to reverse
a decision?
Speaker 9 (07:13):
And so when Archie was forty two classroom hours older,
Archie arrived at camp.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Come on, Jack, where we're going for the recreation hall?
Uncle Bell's going to make a speech.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Okay, fellas, let's have some quiet. I don't want to
make any speeches. I just want to welcome you back
to Camp Raylock and say we're going to have a
lot of fun together.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Now.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
I know on you camps have heard of our program
of character building and racial understanding. Well, don't let those
big words frighten you. It means only hours of good sportsmanship,
teamwork and fun baseball, swimming, aunts and crafts, canoeing and
all the other camp activities. Means that there are boys
(07:58):
here of many different Rayscial backgrounds, but we are all Americans,
I remember, all together. These are the things the Why
stands for Okay, now about rules. Just one rule I
want to mention now.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
No one is to take out a canoe at any.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Time unless he is qualified, and unless there's another canoe
in the vicinity with a counselor in it. Got that,
it's just playing safety. I'll have to punish anyone who
violates that rule. Okay, Now, schedule for this afternoon boys
baseball on the Maine Athletic Field. Following that a free period.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Geck, maybe I can get permission to visit Veronica.
Speaker 4 (08:44):

all of us.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Hell hada, boy, Jimmy Hella.
Speaker 8 (09:08):

gie me. Oh gee, that's right.
Speaker 8 (09:16):
Oh boy, had me on that.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Here's where I smack a home run right into the lake.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Here's where in the athletic field. Attention, Athletic field. Archie
Andrews report to the front office. Archie Andrews report to
the front office. Oh me, Archie Andrews report to front office.
Speaker 8 (09:32):
That is all.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
Oh well, i'd probably have struck out anyway.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Did you send for me on the bill? Archie?
Speaker 4 (09:47):
I got a visit, dude, like to see the camp.
I thought you wouldn't mind us guarding her around her? Yes,
Miss Gush the sister of one of our new camp is.
She's just visiting for the day. I can think that's right.
You find a waiting on the front lawn.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yes, Uncle Bill? Oh, could I ask you something? Yes?
Could I have permission to leave campgrounds during the free period? Tonight?
Leave camp? Yeah? I'd like to visit a friend at
camp Manataka.
Speaker 4 (10:12):
I see well, Andrews. Maybe check with me when you
come back from guiding Miss Gush. I'll let you know that.
Speaker 5 (10:19):
Yes, Uncle Bill, our guide Miss Gush like she's never
been guided before.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Are you going to guide me around camp? Yes? Miss Gush?
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Oh you may call? All right, you're sleep, you're sleep, Agatha.
I don't know what, but something you've got needs oil.
Well shall we look at the camp?
Speaker 2 (10:50):
I'd love to What do we see first?
Speaker 7 (10:52):
Well?
Speaker 2 (10:54):
Well, how'd you like to see a real swell baseball
game on the athletic field.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
You can sit on a nice comfortable bench and watch
me hit a ball all over the field?
Speaker 10 (11:05):
All right?
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Will it take long?
Speaker 9 (11:07):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (11:08):
No, only two hours or so? Oh, but then it
would be time for me to go home, That's what
I mean.
Speaker 10 (11:12):
Oh, but I'd rather just take a nice walk around camp,
a nice.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Long, long walk. Yeah, somehow I knew you would. Just
look at the gorgeous daisies. Are they divine? Yeah, simply divine.
(11:42):
Why just look at the hills. Everything looks a gigantic
way up there, yeah, giganty.
Speaker 5 (11:57):
Why just look at the valley.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Everything looks so infinitesimal down there, Yeah, infinite? Yeah what
you said?
Speaker 10 (12:13):
Oh look a squirrel, Agatha, you're squeaking again.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
So this is the lake, yes, Sagatha, this is the lake.
Now you've seen it all.
Speaker 10 (12:32):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Look, canoe, Yeah, we got it. Do nothing. Oh, I'd
love to go canoeing. Why not to guess the rules
to go out on a canoe along? Oh but I've
never been in a canoe, and I'm certainly not taking
you out in one. I think you're praid to go
out in an old canoe. Listen, Naga, I am not afraid.
Let me all right, I will, but just a few
(12:53):
feet from the dock, all right, and then right back
in again. Okay, I'll sit back there. Oh, I hand
me that paddle here, Non, tie that rope? All right? Hey, hey,
don't push off that way?
Speaker 9 (13:10):
Why not?
Speaker 2 (13:11):
I told you we can't go out very far? Well
do you like annoying?
Speaker 7 (13:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (13:18):
So very dull.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Well you've had nothing. Now I'm gonna take it back in.
Oh but I haven't paddled yet, and you're not going to.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
But I want to paddle just a little. Please cut
it off. Hat to sit down? Oh how do I
get into these things? Jewish? I'm coming up, I hear him.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
I am hold on to my shoulders.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
You'll be all right. That's all right. No, no, not
around my neck, hag of the let go.
Speaker 7 (13:58):
Hell?
Speaker 8 (14:00):
Oh and what's going on there?
Speaker 2 (14:07):
I'm just drowning a little.
Speaker 8 (14:09):
Andrews. Listen to me, Andrew is.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
This any time for lectures?
Speaker 8 (14:14):
Hew, Andrews, stand up? What I said? Stand up? The
wall is only three feet deep?
Speaker 10 (14:24):
Oh oh it is only three ft Yes, this is
where you get off, well, Andrews.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Any explanation for this now, sir?
Speaker 4 (14:45):
All right, Andrews, no canoeing for you for two weeks
and you spend the pre period tonight in your book.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Yes, uncle Bell, Oh, my hero, my hero, but you're
my hero. You saved my life. The water was only
three feet deep, yes, but it might have been deeper,
but it was. Now I gotta go to my boss.
Speaker 10 (15:07):
Uh huh, But I don't even know your name.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Why do you want to know my name? I'd like
to call you sometime in the city. My name, Agatha
is Jughead, Jughead, Joe.
Speaker 11 (15:21):
Hi Archie, she was, what happened to you?
Speaker 2 (15:30):
I fell in the lake in the lake cow.
Speaker 5 (15:33):
Never mind the gruesome details, jug but I can't use
a canoe for two weeks, and I can't visit Veronica tonight.
And Uncle Bill lectured me about that character building again. Gee,
that's tim it sure is. We'll say, what's all that stuff?
Speaker 11 (15:46):
This was some new baseball things. See new glove, she
that's a beauty, and spiked shoes and a new bat
and a ball and the whole uniform.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
She was, Jude, Well, where'd you get all live? I
don't know what do you mean? You don't know? Oh, no,
fool on Archie.
Speaker 11 (16:00):
As I was walking down to the bunk, some guy
came rushing up to me and gave me this stuff,
kept shouting how I saved his daughter's.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
Life, saved his daughter's life. Here some men by the
name of Gush Joseph P. Gush Chug head the next.
Speaker 5 (16:15):
Time Uncle Bill spouts off about character building and I
don't pay attention.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
Will you kick me? Kick you Archie?
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Yes, jug and you can start right now.
Speaker 9 (16:35):
Archie Andrews Day at Camp has been a y m
c A presentation. The script was written by Carl Jampell
and is based on the copyrighted feature appearing in Archie
Comics magazine. Archie was played by James Dobson. Charles urk
Card directed, with Henry Stilburne at the organ, And this
is Bob Sherry saying so long.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
Welcome back. An amusing story that shared the values the
YMC promoted at its camps in the post war era.
I'm not certain how well it promoted the YMC orts
camps to teens looking for a good time with Archie
getting a lecture and in trouble, But for the radio
version of Archie getting in trouble as practical, practically his brand,
(17:32):
so it can't be helped. It should be noted that
Archie is a somewhat forgotten figure as far as many
chroniclers of the Archie Andrews series go many websites, he
hasn't even listed among the actors who played Archie over Radio,
with most online resources listing Bob Hastings in the role
(17:55):
all the way from nineteen forty five to nineteen fifty three.
It should be that most circulating half hour episodes do
feature Hastings, who is better known to younger generations as
Commissioner Gordon in the DC Comics Innovated Universe. In the
nineteen nineties. Dobson was a native of Greenville, South Carolina,
(18:19):
and became a New York radio acting mainstay. When I
was doing research for this episode, I found an article
in the local paper in South Carolina expressing pride in
Dobson's success and urging people to tune in to Archie
Andrews to hear him. Dobson would leave New York for Hollywood,
(18:44):
and he would become one of those character actors who
kicked around film and TV for nearly four decades. Although
we also did a little bit of writing. This episode
concludes our current season. After our first three seasons, we
stopped releasing episodes until the start of the next season. However,
(19:04):
as we now have ninety one episodes in our archives,
I think it's a good idea to share some of
our earlier episodes for newer listeners as well as satisfying
those of you who are used to getting our old
time radio snacks. So for the next few weeks we
will be offering a second helping of some of our
(19:25):
earliest episodes. But don't worry, we'll be back on September
eighth to start our fifth season on the Old Time
Radio Snackwag. It's time for me to close up the
Old Snackwagon, but don't worry. We'll be back with another
serving of old time radio goodness before you know it.
