(00:00):
What's up. I'm John, I'mMarley, and I'm Mikayla, and you're
listening to on the Playlist and IHeart Radio New Music podcast. All right,
well, welcome to a special editionof the On the Playlist podcast.
We're getting to know some new friendstoday. We've got a band in the
studio with us, one we're prettyexcited about. They are a newer band
(00:20):
but over social media have been makinga huge impact and they make some pretty
fun music. Marley and Mikayla here. We're at one of their shows the
other day and could not stop ravingabout the energy in the room during their
live shows. And they have justbeen singing their lyrics NonStop around the office
all day, which you're gonna hearabout in just a minute here. But
(00:40):
they have a really fun story andthey're overall just a great hang. I
really think you're gonna like them.So we might find some new fans today,
kickback and meet some of our newfriends. Zach, Bill, Julian
and Tristan better known as the bandPeople are Ugly. I could easily fit
this in my mouth if I wanted. We're kind of nervous because I think
Mikayla's met you before. Yes,yes, I hadn't yet. So we
(01:02):
were trying to set up these seatsbecause we have a side studio right now
and there's not not a lot ofmics in here. So when we were
trying to set these up, Iwas trying to sit in all the chairs.
But I'm like kind of a skinnierdude, and I didn't know like
how big you guys were going tobe. You guys are We're very large.
Yeah, we're large. We're largepeople. I think so, at
least to me, I feel sodainty. Okay, think I appreciate it.
(01:23):
Yeah, he's the small and daintyone. I am the small Yeah,
that's okay though. Well, it'snice to meet you guys. Thanks
for coming in. People are ugly, of course, thank you. People
are ugly. We've been We've beenpretty punk to have you guys in here,
actually because they went to your showat the Mint, and no joke,
dude, like since that show, they have been coming in screaming your
lyrics through the halls of wastfielding eversince. Like they introduced me to you
(01:48):
guys. They just walked in.They were like, I apologize fund out,
oh god, singing that song thatit's like, I'm not kidding you.
I step out of bed and I'mlike, I recently found out Will
Smith was a rapper, and I'mlike, wait, I didn't because I
didn't. I did know he wasaround. You did know? Am I
the only one? Yeah? Thetime, the entire time, it's just
lyrics to a song. Yeah, well, well well no, actually two
(02:10):
of those are true. I didn'tknow that the Lego movie was great.
He hasn't seen it. And that'sa phenomenal movie. I've heard, like
people say I've heard Lego movie.I hear that I've seen it. I
fell asleep watch them. It's oneof my favorite movies. And I was
like, when we were writing thesong, right before we read the lyric,
I was like, the Lego movieis amazing, and sex pistles the
thing for penis. Of course.Yeah, I didn't realize that either.
That's like one of those like,oh why didn't I think of that?
(02:35):
People Like people go on and onabout how good that Lego movie is,
Like there's a Lego Batman. Peoplesay it's better than Christian Bale, Like
the Lego movie is great too, really yeah, yeah, and Lego Movie
wanted everything's awesome, Like everything's notawesome. Damn deep, I've never seen
it. So that's what's went overthis last week. Though I don't watch
(02:57):
a lot of movies. Yeah, yeah, she's not a big movie girl.
Did you see him? Pharrell haslike a biopic coming out. Oh
my god, Yeah, that looksawesome. It looks it looks awesome.
I know. I was pumped aboutthat. I was like, I don't
know how that's gonna work though,But like a whole lego movie based on
Pharrell's like story. I guess, yes, pray the genius for him to
do that, or I think genius. I guess we'll find out if it's
(03:20):
good or not. Speaking of storythough, so like walk me through yours
real quick, because they were tellingme a little bit about it. Was
it like kind of a bit howthis band got together? Like what is
the story behind that? Yeah?Yeah, so he tells the story.
So I'm just going, do youwant a real story? Do you want
a real story? Go for it. The real story is I got a
gig at the whiskey of Go Go. Without knowing any of them, I
(03:42):
would write venues all around la andline and say I had a band,
because all I want to do wasperform. And then they responded being like,
hey, we have an opening inseven days, and I just like,
yes, I'm in. I'm adrummer and I can't sing and I
don't have anything, So how doesthis like, how does that conversation go?
When you hit up a venue?I was just like, Hey,
can I open for this show ina month? I mean I did it
with almost every venue in LA wentcollege. I just I wanted to perform.
(04:05):
I grew CRuMs Chapman. Oh cool, so you're look yeah, oh
see, yeah, but I'm fromI'm from Philadelphia, so I grew up
playing in the School of Rock andall that, then gave it off to
go to college and was a baseballplayer. Oh and then and then yeah,
I mean I wanted to perform again, wrote all the venues just being
like, Hi, can I play. I don't know what would have happened
if they said yes. Anyway, the whiskey said yes my dream venue,
(04:27):
and I found these guys on Instagramthat that week. Okay, what I
tell you, guys were friends beforeI was still they all know each other.
Yeah, yeah, okay, sothis was what twenty twenty one.
Yeah, one, like right rightas shows were coming back from COVID,
which is I think part of thereason why they said yes to some random
kid. But uh wait, whatdid that do? Yeah? What did?
What did he say? I don'tknow, dude. I was like,
(04:48):
Hey, I have a show atthe Whiskey a go go on Friday?
Would you like to play with me? What? I forgot the action
when he sent you guys that Instagramto you more, you guys like what,
I was like, yeah, fuckit. I kind of thought it
was a scam too, but thenI didn't really know what he was going
to gain from scamming us there. So yeah, like I have really not
(05:10):
a lot of money, I kindof had to go with it. Yeah,
so how did you find them? So? I saw I think Zach
singing like on an Instagram story,Oh wow, And I was like,
yeah, like that kid can sing. They had the three of them actually
had a song come out like thatmonth together. So you guys know each
other. Yeah, yeah, weknew each other made music all that.
Yeah, we just kind of didour own thing. But then yeah,
(05:31):
like we got that damn from himor like whatever. I honestly forgot what
it was. We actually didn't findthat, but yeah, I could probably
scroll back. But anyways, likeI don't know, like I feel like
we were all just like why not, Like why would we not play show?
I'd never played live before, I'dnever sang in front of a crowd,
I'd never done anything. That wasthe first time performing for yeah,
first time. Every yeah mentioned likeall of my favorite bands started out at
(05:53):
the Whiskey Go Go. Of allthe venues I was emailing, they were
my number one choice, So like, who are some of those bands that
opened for I mean Van Halen startedthere. I mean every eighties rock band
has played out the Whiskey Wow andfor such a small venue. I mean
I went there the first time.I was like, this is it Becau.
It's kind of tiny sea It's likefive hundred people, but like the
doors were the house bands there growingup. Motley Cruz started was had to
(06:15):
played their first concert there. Solike all those eighties hair metal bands,
which the two of us like, hell yeah, so what did you guys
perform? Just like a bunch ofwell, like we all made music before
that, so like we we hadsongs just like a random like collections of
songs to choose from Yeah, right, so like we had that. We
also came together and wrote a coupleoriginals too for that show, like in
(06:39):
the like week leading up to there. But yeah, yeah, we just
yeah, we just ripped and sentit. And that's a brag. But
of all of those songs we playedin our first show, I had one
that I wrote as a joke, and that is the only song from that
show that I think we still perform. Yeah, they we still play that
regrets And that's actually my voice singingon the song. He loves to brag
(07:03):
about that. The drummer sings asong ringo Star. So that show went
so good that you decided to bea real band? Yeah, sorry,
am I gonna let me really quick? You get to talk now. Yeah,
I think it actually went really No, it was like it was a
lot of fun. Like I flewin to play that show. Some from
(07:23):
Canada's like I flew in to playthe concert with them, and I was
like, Okay, I guess atthis point, I'll join a band one
more time kind of see what happens. But yeah, we just kept kept
going. So have you guys everlike joined bands with other guys And I
didn't work out like they weren't chillor whatever. This is my first band.
He's the season vet. That waslike kind of sour to it.
Yeah. I was in like fivefailed ones, like growing up from high
school through college in Canada. Andthen when Zach hit me up being like,
(07:45):
hey, this guy DMed us tolike, you know, work on
some music and like play a show. Would you be down? I was
like, I don't know, dude, I can't do this again. And
that's the show. I'm like,I'll fly in for one show. I'm
like, I haven't played a showin la. I'm like crossing off my
list. I'll do it. Andthen it was like one of the nuts
shows I've ever played personal, youknow. I was like, Okay,
I'll stick around. So we thinkthis one's going places. Then I don't
know yet. I'm still waiting forit. We're like two three years and
now like I'm still waiting for thered flags start popping up. Where's my
(08:09):
goddamn check goddamn jet? So like, what is the reason that the other
bands, like, what's the mainreason other bands would fall apart? To
be perfectly honest, what I foundwas two things. So it's usually lack
of communication amongst the four of youguys at the end of the day,
as much of our friends like andbusiness partners. Yea, it is kind
of like a weird relationship in away. So it's like we're basically out
dating each other at this point. We want to check in make sure,
(08:31):
like you know, no one's egosgetting fueled too much, no one's feeling
like they're not being hurt. Sothat usually falls apart. Lead singers tend
to be a problem sometimes Damn,I don't'm joking. I'm joking. Doesn't
look like is not. Yeah,No, it's usually just like lack of
care amongst each other, and likeyou know, you have four bashing heads
out at all times, right,so as long as everyone's on the same
page, usually goes smoothly. Butlike any relationship, yeah exactly, yeah,
(08:54):
exactly. Wait, we're dating one, we're dating? Can we kiss?
Okay, dude, I've like alwaysbeen a big proponent that, like
you can kiss the homies. Ohyeah, we do, like on stage,
like every show, every show onthe lips. Yeah weird. Yeah,
No, it's I've been telling peoplefor the long time. So I
work on a radio morning show andI'm the youngest one on there, and
(09:16):
they like have a hard time processingthat. They're like, like, what
do you mean you kiss the homies? Like, it's not weird unless you
make it weird. Yeah, justgive your b Yeah. Does I mean
a little kiss good night too?Yeah? A little kiss a night also
lives in the house. I havefive guy roommates, so it's like,
yeah, So, what's been likethe biggest challenge of staying in the band
(09:37):
so far? Like, has itbeen pretty smooth sailing since twenty twenty one?
I mean biggest challenge, I wouldsay, like, for so we
started doing really well on social mediarecently, but for for two years,
what people don't know is we weregetting two hundred to three hundred views on
everything, every every single social clipand trying to figure out these algorithms that
(09:58):
now run almost every industry. Yeah, and uh like putting so much work
and effort into these videos that wouldbe seen by maybe two to three hundred
people. I feel like that's beenthe biggest struggle, including for me,
because like even in radio, likenow you can be a radio personality,
that's one thing, but like influencersjust run it, like you also have
to have the social numbers. SoI feel like you get through that stage
(10:18):
of just putting out shit that doesn'tgo anywhere, and you're like, damn
is everyone seeing this fail? Likeit's crazy that you did that for two
years? Yeah, Like what doyou tell yourself when you don't see traction
for months? Well, I meanlike we told ourself that, like we
were shadow band. We're like,oh, like we got to be shadow
band. We suck? These videosare great? Was nobodys saying them?
It's like no, like the videosjust were kind of mid like we weren't
(10:39):
really pushing them right, Like we'rejust like like thinking that we like deserve
to go viral when like we weren'tactually making the good content. And then
I don't like when did it likeflip do you remember? I think it
was Branda? Yeah, it wasbranded, yeah, brand people off.
People loved it. So I've seenin the comments that it pisses people off.
With shocks me like, why whatis it? Why do people get
(11:01):
pissed over that? I mean, first of all, I don't smoke weed.
I don't As I said, Idon't smoke weed at all, and
we we when we enjoy writing retretesand Joshua Trees. So Bill got me
higher than I've ever been in mylife watching these clips and those lyrics.
I don't even know where they camefrom. And I remember like reading them
(11:22):
off the paper to them and weall looked at you, shir like yeah,
that's it, like crazy, andyeah, I think the lyrics are
so simple. They're memorable, andthey're I don't think they're controversial, but
like they're opinionated and pissed people offfor some reason, yeah, really badly.
I don't know why people get soangry. Yeah, I guess like
whenever you have an opinion, peoplejust get mad, even though it's just
(11:43):
uh, I don't know, it'sjust it was just stating facts though it
is actually wait, it's non opinionat all. It's actually all true,
Drake was on Nickelodeon. It's justa bunch of realizations that people are mad
that we figured out too late.Yeah, So what it is when we
were like, oh my god, this video is four hundred views, it's
going viral, and then the nextday it had a million. And then
(12:05):
what we did is we responded toevery comment in like a nice, thankful
way, and then people were likewait, I actually like it, and
then those people would start arguing,so it was like this song sucks,
don't be a musician anymore. Andthen people were like, no, I
love it. Then they would startfighting, and then the comments section exploded.
And once you light the fire inthe comments, and do you think
that's why it's blowing up right now? I see it everywhere, like Braindad
(12:26):
is everywhere right now. I justhit over a million streams right on that.
Yeah, that's huge. So what'sI feel like when you see that?
So cool? Until we had amillion, we're a real band now,
manager Wow, But yeah, itfeels really good to millions, like
a big, a big stepping stonethat a lot of bands I feel like
aren't fortunate to hit. I alsofeel like there's something to like feeling old,
(12:52):
Like I think this is my firsttime because I'm thirty, right so
this is my first time starting tofeel old, which is kind of crazy.
I feel like once I start tosee the younger thing, like I've
never felt like an older person beforein my life until right now. Like
being hung over two beers, I'mlike, what the oh my guy?
Oh no, come on, I'mtwenty nine, So like I feel you
so like he's gonna do it happenslike this, man, it's crazy,
how are your knees that you're sobad? And I literally stand up and
(13:16):
it's like I have a bag ofrocks in my knees. It's like there's
a couple of mornings where'll wake upand it's just like I really feel the
pulses go. I'm like, ohmy god, guys, it's for the
rest of you. It's coming, like and it's gonna close. He's closer
overnight. I'm only twenty three, yeah, babies, Yeah, I'm twenty
four for twenty seven and I turnedtwenty nine like a few weeks. Yeah,
(13:37):
that's like the age of everyone inmy house. So like that,
I think we are you, yeah, with less success, though, I
think the song definitely makes some peoplefeel old, just like hearing those things.
Yeah, but yeah, I meanlike I just also think a lot
of people don't don't realize that likewe are being like ironic of course.
Yeah. Yeah, it's one ofthose songs before. Yeah, like that's
a funny open and I had yeahnowadays a social idiot. The first three
(14:00):
seconds are everything else. Yeah,we didn't make the song necessarily for so.
I mean, we didn't even knowif we were going to release it.
We plaid it for her. There'sa video of it that we released,
like showing our manager our new songas a joke and then like,
okay, wait what was the reactionthere? I don't know what was the
reaction? Was it absolutely not overyou? Like green Light? Yeah?
What'd you think? Honestly, itwas pretty shocking. Ever, so I
was like, what, like, you guys are messing with me, Like
(14:22):
this isn't a real song. Yeah. Then it went viral and like our
labels calling us being like this comesout next week, Like like yeah,
see, And I appreciate that too, because like, what pisses me off
the most on TikTok right now iswhen you tease the song for six months.
Oh yeah, dude, just droppedthe song already, Like I want
to listen to it. Yeah,So I respect that. You know.
What was the video that Sizza commentedon? Oh yeah, that was a
(14:46):
video of Tristan drumming on top ofthis like spinning contraption to that. My
sister us for AGT. She wasjust in the finale of the Fantasy League
AGT. But she like like useslike spinny wheel that she like jumped from
with her hands. I don't know, you have to actually watched the video
that with her hands. Yeah.Yeah, she does like contortion and like
(15:07):
hand balancing and it's crazy. Butwe just like have that in our warehouse
that like she has. But Tristanput his drums on there and then was
like spinning, and then we didlike a little funny parody where like Sophie
like was like, oh, likethis guy asked me on a day,
YadA, YadA YadA, and thenflip the case like this guy asked me
on a date, had something coolto show me, and it's like me
on this massive contraption playing drums andspinning. So what's your reaction when you
(15:28):
look at the notifications and sciss withthe little blue I sent it to all
of them and they were like,We're all that's fucking awesome. Was so
cool? Has she reached out sinceor nothing? I love you? Yeah.
Social media is hard that way, because like when she has that many
followers, like, yeah, she'sprobably getting millions of dames, but she
(15:50):
saw your feet were on her feed. Hell yeah, dude, that is
that's so awesome. What is yourfavorite song so far to perform live?
What if our favorite song isn't released? Really it's not. I don't know
if it one day will come out. It's this yeah, wait, what
(16:14):
it's about? Julian Okay, butlike you guys just get to sit there
and watch. Why don't you tellthem about it? I can't talk about
this. This is like a radiopodcast. We're talking about it. I
think we've already seen it. Youguys have seen million unfortunately this song.
Yeah, unfortunately, we wanted tocome out. Wait, wait, how
explicit is this? Like feel Freeis about? Yeah? Okay, circumcision,
(16:37):
circumcisions Okay, So, like Imean, so we we wrote the
song twenty three when I told himabout how I got circumcises adult at twenty
three, and it was like ajoke thing forever. Our label hated us
YEA for doing it, and wewere going to sign. The week we
signed with them, they're like, you got to take this song down off
of YouTube. Yeah, they madeus take it down because we like just
(16:57):
put it out as like a jokewith like a music for that we we
made in like two hours, right, So like we like made and like
released a song in like two hoursand then we put on YouTube. We
signed. They're like, nope, take this down. We're like, god,
damn a fuck. I thought itwas funny. Yeah. So then
so then that song just like satin the graveyard for so long for over
a year, and then we randomlywell you know, we've not read.
(17:18):
We took a meeting at Atlantic andZach filmed the video because the guy's like,
oh, I see some of yourmusic. It's like, we have
a lot of joke songs as well, So we just like showed him that
and Zach caught it on camera andthat just skyrocketed everything and now and then
we were at a writing retreat inuh, I don't know, somewhere in
the middle of nowhere, which wedo occasionally, and we went to this
bar where there were like five peoplethat like live in the mountains, like
(17:41):
mountain man and is that a correctand we were like, Julian grabbed this
guitar and placed our twenty three andhe did. I filmed it from the
corner and like got their reactions. The big guys in like camouflage half probably
loved it watching it, and Ithink they did, I don't know,
And that video overnight got ten millionviews and now it's out over twenty million,
(18:03):
twenty million views, so total servetwenty three. This unreleased song is
at like forty five to fifty millionviews across the films right now, which
is a lot of people. Yeah, sorry about four skin too, is
I can say because it's not released. Copying a plain white tea song,
ye yeah, yeah yeah one andthe plain why ts dms me no,
saying I had never thought that one, two, three, four whatever have
(18:25):
these lyrics. I love it,yes, like we got his like stamp
of approval. However, as muchas I think we all love it,
I don't think we're ever going toput it out. Yeah, I just
don't know if that will sit rightbeing our number one song Spotify. You
know, Yeah, everyone will listento and it's like we have other music
tune. It's like I don't wantthat one song just be sitting on the
top of It's for the live shows, it's for the fans. It's actually
out on YouTube. You can youcan listen to it with the little like
(18:48):
music video on you have been beforethe two live shows? Yes, how
many views that? Like we wentwe were playing so Wet Festival last week
and we're two songs in Like theseguys are like Cert twenty three play the
Circumcision song Like I was literally asking, tell me about your skin. So
they knew of the song, theywanted to hear it. So what was
like, was there any like weirdreactions in the audience like about it?
(19:11):
Yeah, there's like definitely always weirdweird reactions from people who whether to go
to Land. We know what ourown shows like that mint like it's gonna
Land. That was my first timehearing the song. I had no idea
about it. We don't say whatit was like, how do you feel
like when like the entire crowd waslike, where's my foreskin? We looked
at each other. I was like, we were like, what's going on?
(19:32):
I first I thought it was likea plain white song because yeah,
like what I mean, the crowd'svery like Maryland. We just played a
festival Maryland. I mean we wereon tour and played it in Nashville.
Everyone was with a straight face.Yeah it just didn't work. But so
yeah, but then that's so whatin Texas, like the entire crowd is
like fun and skin. You neverknow, choreographed dancing. We need like
(19:59):
a viral TikTok dance to it.We also we also we can move on
because it's a lot of eventually, but we found we located the doctor that
did the surgery. Stop yeah videoand we have a video of this on
our Instagram by the way, Solike we like found the actual doctor who
circumcised him Eddie's twenty three, doctorMichael Cogan, doctor doctor Michael Coganes,
And we did like a whole littlelike documentary where he talked to him for
(20:22):
the first time and like it's funnybecause he ends up also being I haven't
seen this guy since probably like soundsI was twenty three, So like I
emailed him just out of the bluebeing like, hey man, I don't
know if you're gonna remember me atall, but like this we made yeah
yeah, But we started chatting andI told him the whole story of like
how the song is bloyingc He's like, I love this. Like I'm also
a musician too, so she's like, if you ever play it live somewhere
(20:44):
it is like, can I pleasecome perform it with you? Last night
festival in Pittsburgh coming up, Andthe chance he comes and plays it,
oh, my God, whichhall bethe most viral video probably ever on Yeah
Circles, there's no pun intend toYeah wow, I would have known like
that by you doing this it wouldgo viral and like yeah, it's just
(21:06):
like the life of this song.Yeah crazy, Yeah, I think that's
what's so interesting is like you reallycan't predict this shit, you know what
I mean, Like these songs thatwent viral, Like it's it seems like
you're genuinely just having fun making thismusic and like some of the jokes of
course go off, but like you'redefinitely not a joke band, you know
what I mean, But you canstill have fun. Like how do you
find the line between like having agood time but also taking yourself seriously as
(21:27):
a band. It was definitely hardwhen all of ours every day or like
when is this released the force,Like yeah, we have real music and
like we are musician. Yeah,we're definitely still like teetering the line.
It's like we're definitely like not inthe clear of the joke band allegations,
but uh yeah, you know,we're we're a trying but I mean,
(21:48):
just like in general, like whenwe make music, we're just we're just
trying to have fun whenever we do, and like occasionally we'll just get high
and write some stupid lyrics and justisn't that like the point of being a
musician? Yeah, Joshua treeen Ridealbum, Like, yeah, have you
guys always been that way? Ijust kind of go with the flow with
life and just seeing what happens.I mean, sure, I guess so
yeah, yeah, yeah, Soyou were always trying to form a band,
(22:12):
right, and I guess you wereas well. I was retired at
that point production and session musician stuff, like I won't do a band,
So what was like plan a beforethe band happened for the rest of you
producing? So like I like producein music, yeah, and like I
was doing like my only uh myown soulo music too, so there was
(22:32):
that he was also doing his likeown solo ship. Yeah. For like
three or four years, Zach andI were just like producer artists to him,
and like I was helping him writehis stuff and he was helping me
produce my stuff. And then Tristancame around. I was just studying animation
really and play. Yeah, Iwas studying math A Chapman. I actually
(22:53):
went to Chapin at the same timewith him, did you really Yeah,
but you guys didn't know each other. You still met because I was a
little math nerd Yeah, I mean, and then I was working at a
video editing job. We're both videoeditors. Yeah, oh wow. Luckily
that's why we have pretty good content. Yeah. So right now, are
you doing most of your own stuff? Like all the way through, all
of it, all of it goodfor you guys? Production writing, Yeah,
(23:15):
dude, it is a lot ofwork. Like I think people,
yeah, don't like. People underestimatehow much work really goes into like promoting
the band and making the videos andthen like writing songs, practicing songs,
working on the tour. Like Danto mention, our studios in Orange County
and we live in l A righthere my house Cypress, No hell yeah,
my mom lives in Cerritos. Ohyeah, and around the corner.
(23:38):
So I'm all the way down there. That's sick. Nice you drive up
here every dude. I want tokill myself. Morning show too. So
he's up at like three. Itext him at six thirty he's already three.
I'm kind of guy. Yeah, man, wow. After seven I
was invited to the show at theMint, but like I didn't know you
then, and I was like yeah, and the opener goes on, I'm
(24:02):
in bed already, So it's justlike the latest that you like stay up
at night, Like don't you likemiss out on things? Don't you treat
yourself like a night like on FridayFriday And even then it's like I'm drinking
a bunch of bangs and like I'mjust trying to stay away because once nine
pm hits on Friday, I'm like, my body's not used to it and
I'm just out. But sometimes weyell at him because we have so many
concerts, Like I mean, Iwork on a morning show too, but
(24:23):
I mean I live ten minutes away, so I don't have to get up
as early. But we'll say, like John, like we have this we
have like I don't even know showtomorrow come and he's like, it's tomorrow,
it's Thursday. Yeah, no,it's not SLD and a Grandpa.
Yeah, it's it's embarrassing. Whatwhat's what's your bedtime? You do?
You guys live like the late latenight musician life. Yeah, yeah,
(24:44):
like three am am. He's goingto bed when you're waking up sleep when
you wake up. I'm okay,No, Sometimes I will be good and
I'll go to sleep like twelve thirty. That's like, that's like me taking
care of myself, doing like someself care and like going to bed at
like a reasonable hours, like twelvethirty. Damn, we're honest. Six
hour difference. I went to bedat four forty five last night. Oh
yeah, he's a vampire. He'sa vampire. I'm trying, dude,
(25:07):
I'm gonna really wave to you fromoutside my car and like he's out there
something. I'm a nerve on.So if you see it, oh you're
a ner yeah. Oh hell yeah, dude, I love that. This
is like low key and O Seaband. And then we're in We're in
conver City. Oh hell yes,you guys are no Ce band. I'll
go to the next show. Idon't know what it is. All right,
we're gonna hold you see that becauseyeah, yeah I say that now,
(25:27):
but like yeah, no, Iwill. I will. So we
had some questions that they wanted toask too. When was about church on
TV? Yeah, they want toknow about this. The screams at the
end, who's doing that? Yeah, they're like this, like I was
listening. I was listening to itin my car the other day and I
don't think I really realized it.And I was like, oh, there's
(25:48):
like there's like someone screaming and yeah. So we actually wrote that song behind
you Lanes back about relationship. Yeah, this song has a lot of lore.
We wrote it in one night andthat was our engineer. Actually.
I was like, can anyone screamthe songs there's a scream and he was
like, I can scream. He'slike a high guy that just sits on
his I've got a whole less videoof it and everything it is. It
(26:11):
is. It is fucking hilarious.Watched this man do it and we're like,
oh my god. Yeah, andwe kept it on. So I
don't know if you've ever like seendeath metal screams like in person, but
it's it's it's like surreal. It'slike wow, like that's just coming out
of you, really imagine, andit like kind of looks effortless when they
do it up there, but likewhen I scream up a weak voice like
I lose it quick one night out, it's really difficult. Yeah, it's
(26:32):
like a technique to it. Yeah, there's a reform to it. Yeah,
one of them. I want to. I was like sixteen, I've
always wanted to learn. So I'mtrying to figure that out without killing myself.
So how do you guys who writesthe songs? Do you guys all
do that together? Yeah? Allof us, it's like a collective.
Yeah. So I wanted to knowit was church on TV from experience.
Just okay, why did you ask? Chill? Okay, So I'll try
(26:55):
and make this extremely short. SoI dated a girl a year ago who
was a Christian, very Christian, dad was a pastor everything. Around Easter
time, she made me watch churchon TV because we didn't go. I
didn't go to church with her familyat that time. I remember the following
day, I was telling these guyslike what I did, and like,
how can you watch church on TV? Like that's even the thing? I
didn't even know a thing like that. They didn't feel funny. I'm just
(27:17):
like what They didn't stayed at homeand I stayed live stream right literally,
like a live stream like Hillsong Churchthing on YouTube like you can just watch,
and we just watched the sermon andthen they just never let me live
it down. And they wrote thesong completely behind my back. Yeah,
I mean so we also work withone writer named Nick Furlung, and we
told him and he was like, that's such a memorable sentence. She makes
him watch church on TV. Yeah, and that's the chorus of the song.
(27:41):
Is my girlfriend make is making mewatch church on TV? When you
hear that? Okay? Oh goddude, Okay. For like a couple
of months, I was not happy. I didn't want to speak to them
like at all. So around thenext band that's out the window. Literally
that was literally like a deciding factorfrom him, like I can't tough this
one out, like well cause sothe first time they showed me, we
played Emo night at the Avalon onHollywood there. Yeah. So then they
(28:03):
were like, there's one song thatwe're gonna make you stand in the crowd
for that we want to get yourlive reaction. But my parents were in
town as well, and my parentsknew her family, like they were like
family friends. So I remember justlike being in the crowd and they're playing
the song and I'm literally watching.I was kind of buzzed, like I
was having a good time. ButI remember like looking at my mom and
dad and there's mortified and I'm sittingthere and the next morning I was talking
my parents are like they can't everdo anything with that song, like that's
(28:25):
gonna be so bad. And thenI just ended up just taking one for
the team and doing it. That'simpressive. I'm sorry, Off. Do
you know if she's heard it?Oh yeah, that's a whole other that's
a whole other thing. We hope, so my life for I swear to
God, like seven months of ruinedmy life. Wow, And I'm like
(28:47):
these are supposed to my best friends, but like, is that why you
broke up? It was very toxic. It was, it was It wasn't
the best. Yeah, it wasjust when we started promoting it. Yeah,
we wouldn't have released it online. We were on twur and we played
it and after every single show everyonecame up to us and was like,
what is that church on TV song? Yeah? And like that was after
we were the openers. Then theheadliner came on and they still remembered the
(29:10):
title and the song a little bitmore. And You're like, damn,
I have such a duality with thewhole thing being like I'm like, I'm
not going to tell the guys notto release the song. But at the
same time, I'm like everyone elseis having fun with it around me except
for me at that moment. SoI'm just kind of like, like I
said, I'll just like bite mytongue. I'll just deal with it and
whatever drama comes afterwards, I'll justdeal with it. But now it's it's
been fine, I want to seeit through. I want to see it
(29:33):
through. A lot of our songsare well, specifically two, but those
two are very important in our catalog. So yeah, so, like,
how many songs do you have justgeared up to come out? Still?
Like, how many songs have youwritten that are coming out this year?
That's a great question. I don'tknow if I can put a number on
that, but I mean, Imean, I mean we're like constantly like
(29:53):
writing. I mean like right now, like we're like really like writing mode,
Like right after this interview, really, I'm going back in them and
like and like we're just like likecooking. But yeah, yeah, I
mean like, yeah, we'll getyou before the traffics all the way down.
Yeah yeah. But also, youguys just released Just Friends, Yes,
and that song is so fun.We love it. But I have
to mention like the promotion for itof the farm animals, because I think
(30:18):
I've watched that twenty times because itwas hysterical. This idea was that I
think, yeah, I forgot, don't know. I was like we were
all just like joking about it.I think it's like we're like, oh,
oh, like testing our products andanimals. They were like, wait,
what if we actually test our productsand animals? Yeah, most of
our ideas are us just like shootingthe ship and then like something will just
like we'll just like say something belike oh, that's that's funny. What's
like the attention grabber? What's thehook? And like yeah, and apology
(30:42):
videos do really really well in ourattention grabbing, not to mention responding to
a comment being like you test yourproduct on animals and not saying we're never
going to stop. But then butthen it's like it's like shoot and innocent
because it's like we're just playing musicand we went to the pettings by the
way in there it's so cool. It's I think it's love sanctuaries and like
(31:02):
yeah in the valley and they werelike so cool about it. They loved
it. They loved it. Isthere like a breed of animal that fox
with your music the most pig.Yeah, he was super into it.
It was fun. We're definitely gonnavolunteer there because they were all the animals
are so sick. Wow. Sowas it a real comment or you guys
made up? We made okay, because I was gonna say that would have
(31:25):
been funny. If someone did commentsPeters out there, I'm telling you they'll
sniff it out. Wow. Sodo you guys have a tour coming up?
Like are you coming to play again? Or hopefully? I mean that's
the goal. We're We're reaching outto a lot of artists, so hopefully
do a support towe this fall?Like if you're in dream mode right now,
like what is what's the end gamefor you guys? Like what could
happen for you to feel like allright, we made it and we all
(31:47):
have probably different answers for that.My goal, the reason I got into
this was I want to play likeArenas. I want to be behind a
drum set playing the biggest shows possible. Yeah, fucking awesome. I mean,
I mean I was just like asong that's successful enough to land on
the charts, like people know Iguess you know yeah, that's definitely like
one goal. I mean definitely playingarenas. Of course, who wouldn't want
(32:07):
to do that. What's the biggeststage you've played on Shingle Ball. Yeah,
well the pre show, but itwas still like like, how we're
playing the pre show. We didn'tknow, like what, we didn't have
any information on the size of it, and we go through soundcheck and we
were like, this is way toobig to be a pre show. And
then we walk out on stage andthere's thousands of people there. So that
was we were going from like playingthe Whiskey five hundred cap rooms and even
(32:30):
the Toy we were almost like fivehundred cap rooms to what was that four
or five thousand people out of afew thousand. And that's when I first
saw you guys. My roommate heardof your band and when she was like,
oh this is people are ugly andI thought she I didn't know that
you guys at the time, andI was like, what do you mean
people are ugly? And she said, no, that's the band's name.
So she was like, I wantto go see them. So we went
to see you guys. I'm gladwe did because you gained a fan that
night, but also how did thename come up? The question? I
(32:52):
mean the name, Like the storyis like we met and had the show
and we were just like but we'rejust like every time we said the name
people already it turns people's heads,like, what's like a name We're probably
not going to sit where there's aone time shore. Let's just think of
a random name that is like memorable. I guess the first name since the
beginning this was beginning yeah, yeah, wow, Yeah. I feel like
it's just like a reminder, justlike not take yourselves too seriously at the
(33:14):
end of the day. I feellike that is the vibe I get from
you guys, like don't take yourselftoo seriously, and I feel like we
need that. It can be tooLike that's why I need to rely the
dad of the group. I haveto be twenty nine yeah, yeah,
yeah, rough, I had arough age twenty three yeahs our little brother,
yeah, anything before we wrap upwith some lightning questions too. I'm
(33:37):
just excited for more music and thatshow is so fun and can't wait for
another Mint. Yeah. When Isee the videos, like, I think
that's why I really like shows atplaces like the Mint because it's a very
small venue, but like that's whereyou see like what bands are there to
bring it. And like when Iwas seeing the videos from you guys playing
there, like people were jumping upand down like it was one thousand person
(33:58):
venue, and I feel like that'sthat's what it feels like when I feel
like I see a band that's likereally into it. Like I saw the
band Camino there a long time ago. I was like, dude, this
band like is going to be sick, Like they're all over the stage.
The energy is there, and that'swhat I hear from what it was like
with you guys. Man. Soyou guys all think a lot of tall
fans. Yeah, I always standon the front always if we were in
(34:20):
the back, and I don't knowif you saw my videos, I was
over here on time in the side. I was like hello or something.
Yeah. Yeah, I will sayit feels like a lot of people because
we do add and post the littleshakes on each basis. Yeah, just
puts it in there and for anyonelistening, you could take that idea,
(34:43):
but just nowhere it came from, all right, So we want to get
to know you guys a little bit. So we have a couple of rapid
fire questions we're going to close with. So first thing that comes to mind.
First, we can agree on this. One song of the summer so
far had some help Morgan Wall Idon't I don't do country. I'm not.
(35:04):
That's what I say. I can'tchoose my answer now. Can I
just say espresso? Yeah? Betterthan please? Please? Please? Yes?
Yeah, I'm with you on that. Okay, fast food, what's
the stop? Don't it? Inand out, in and out, in
and Outan's McDonald I I'm big McDonald's. I quit fast food. So Taco
(35:30):
Bell, Okay, thank you havingTaco Bell. Girly give me a drop
at two am. I love it. Did you ever tell you, Tristan
you look like John Krasinski? Never? Really? Yeah, that's what I've
never gotten. I was like tryingto place it this whole interview. Wow,
it's like John did. They're nevergoing to hear that. It's like
(35:50):
the high tone of them was jealouspeople taller than me and hip? All
right. Crushed ice cube, dicecube, cube, cubed cube, crush
ice cube, sonic crush ice makesit okay, Yeah, that's about makes
strengths better OK, yeah, fillin the blank. Taylor Swift is blank,
tall, tall, successful. Yeahall again a musician, it's just
(36:21):
like five eight, but that's likesix four, six three or four for
a woman. Yeah. Sunrise orSunset Sunset, Sunset Sunset, Life of
my Own Party or brain Dead Lifeon my Own Party. I wish that
song would go viral. Yeah, that's the song that she found us and
(36:43):
called us that night. I waslike, I'm going to be your manager.
Really shout out to the manager.Well, I do appreciate you guys
coming in. Man, it waslike really great to meet you guys.
Thanks, thanks for having us.Now that I know you're in o C.
Dude, like we're gonna hang outsometimes between the hours of like three
AM and right before you go toSneaky Link in and out. People are
(37:08):
ugly. Thanks for coming
