well, welcome to a special editionof the On the Playlist podcast.
We're getting to know some new friendstoday. We've got a band in the
studio with us, one we're prettyexcited about. They are a newer band

but over social media have been makinga huge impact and they make some pretty
fun music. Marley and Mikayla here. We're at one of their shows the
other day and could not stop ravingabout the energy in the room during their
live shows. And they have justbeen singing their lyrics NonStop around the office

real quick, because they were tellingme a little bit about it. Was
it like kind of a bit howthis band got together? Like what is
the story behind that? Yeah?Yeah, so he tells the story.
So I'm just going, do youwant a real story? Do you want
a real story? Go for it. The real story is I got a
gig at the whiskey of Go Go. Without knowing any of them, I

would write venues all around la andline and say I had a band,
because all I want to do wasperform. And then they responded being like,
hey, we have an opening inseven days, and I just like,
yes, I'm in. I'm adrummer and I can't sing and I
don't have anything, So how doesthis like, how does that conversation go?
When you hit up a venue?I was just like, Hey,
can I open for this show ina month? I mean I did it
with almost every venue in LA wentcollege. I just I wanted to perform.

I grew CRuMs Chapman. Oh cool, so you're look yeah, oh
see, yeah, but I'm fromI'm from Philadelphia, so I grew up
playing in the School of Rock andall that, then gave it off to
go to college and was a baseballplayer. Oh and then and then yeah,
I mean I wanted to perform again, wrote all the venues just being
like, Hi, can I play. I don't know what would have happened
if they said yes. Anyway,the whiskey said yes my dream venue,

and I found these guys on Instagramthat that week. Okay, what I
tell you, guys were friends beforeI was still they all know each other.
Yeah, yeah, okay, sothis was what twenty twenty one.
Yeah, one, like right rightas shows were coming back from COVID,
which is I think part of thereason why they said yes to some random
kid. But uh wait, whatdid that do? Yeah? What did?
What did he say? I don'tknow, dude. I was like,

Hey, I have a show atthe Whiskey a go go on Friday?
Would you like to play with me? What? I forgot the action
when he sent you guys that Instagramto you more, you guys like what,
I was like, yeah, fuckit. I kind of thought it
was a scam too, but thenI didn't really know what he was going
to gain from scamming us there.So yeah, like I have really not

a lot of money, I kindof had to go with it. Yeah,
so how did you find them?So? I saw I think Zach
singing like on an Instagram story,Oh wow, And I was like,
yeah, like that kid can sing. They had the three of them actually
had a song come out like thatmonth together. So you guys know each
other. Yeah, yeah, weknew each other made music all that.
Yeah, we just kind of didour own thing. But then yeah,

it was. We actually didn't findthat, but yeah, I could probably

we were all just like why not, Like why would we not play show?
I'd never played live before, I'dnever sang in front of a crowd,
I'd never done anything. That wasthe first time performing for yeah,
first time. Every yeah mentioned likeall of my favorite bands started out at

the Whiskey Go Go. Of allthe venues I was emailing, they were
my number one choice, So like, who are some of those bands that
opened for I mean Van Halen startedthere. I mean every eighties rock band
has played out the Whiskey Wow andfor such a small venue. I mean
I went there the first time.I was like, this is it Becau.
It's kind of tiny sea It's likefive hundred people, but like the
doors were the house bands there growingup. Motley Cruz started was had to

played their first concert there. Solike all those eighties hair metal bands,
which the two of us like,hell yeah, so what did you guys
perform? Just like a bunch ofwell, like we all made music before
that, so like we we hadsongs just like a random like collections of
songs to choose from Yeah, right, so like we had that. We
also came together and wrote a coupleoriginals too for that show, like in

the like week leading up to there. But yeah, yeah, we just
yeah, we just ripped and sentit. And that's a brag. But
of all of those songs we playedin our first show, I had one
that I wrote as a joke,and that is the only song from that
show that I think we still perform. Yeah, they we still play that
regrets And that's actually my voice singingon the song. He loves to brag

so good that you decided to bea real band? Yeah, sorry,

Canada's like I flew in to playthe concert with them, and I was
like, Okay, I guess atthis point, I'll join a band one
more time kind of see what happens. But yeah, we just kept kept
going. So have you guys everlike joined bands with other guys And I
didn't work out like they weren't chillor whatever. This is my first band.
He's the season vet. That waslike kind of sour to it.
Yeah. I was in like fivefailed ones, like growing up from high
school through college in Canada. Andthen when Zach hit me up being like,

hey, this guy DMed us tolike, you know, work on
some music and like play a show. Would you be down? I was
like, I don't know, dude, I can't do this again. And
that's the show. I'm like,I'll fly in for one show. I'm
like, I haven't played a showin la. I'm like crossing off my
list. I'll do it. Andthen it was like one of the nuts
shows I've ever played personal, youknow. I was like, Okay,
I'll stick around. So we thinkthis one's going places. Then I don't
know yet. I'm still waiting forit. We're like two three years and
now like I'm still waiting for thered flags start popping up. Where's my

goddamn check goddamn jet? So like, what is the reason that the other
bands, like, what's the mainreason other bands would fall apart? To
be perfectly honest, what I foundwas two things. So it's usually lack
of communication amongst the four of youguys at the end of the day,
as much of our friends like andbusiness partners. Yea, it is kind
of like a weird relationship in away. So it's like we're basically out
dating each other at this point.We want to check in make sure,

like you know, no one's egosgetting fueled too much, no one's feeling
like they're not being hurt. Sothat usually falls apart. Lead singers tend
to be a problem sometimes Damn,I don't'm joking. I'm joking. Doesn't
look like is not. Yeah,No, it's usually just like lack of
care amongst each other, and likeyou know, you have four bashing heads
out at all times, right,so as long as everyone's on the same
page, usually goes smoothly. Butlike any relationship, yeah exactly, yeah,

work on a radio morning show andI'm the youngest one on there, and

yeah, So, what's been likethe biggest challenge of staying in the band

so far? Like, has itbeen pretty smooth sailing since twenty twenty one?
I mean biggest challenge, I wouldsay, like, for so we
started doing really well on social mediarecently, but for for two years,
what people don't know is we weregetting two hundred to three hundred views on
everything, every every single social clipand trying to figure out these algorithms that

now run almost every industry. Yeah, and uh like putting so much work
and effort into these videos that wouldbe seen by maybe two to three hundred
people. I feel like that's beenthe biggest struggle, including for me,
because like even in radio, likenow you can be a radio personality,
that's one thing, but like influencersjust run it, like you also have
to have the social numbers. SoI feel like you get through that stage

of just putting out shit that doesn'tgo anywhere, and you're like, damn
is everyone seeing this fail? Likeit's crazy that you did that for two
years? Yeah, Like what doyou tell yourself when you don't see traction
for months? Well, I meanlike we told ourself that, like we
were shadow band. We're like,oh, like we got to be shadow
band. We suck? These videosare great? Was nobodys saying them?
It's like no, like the videosjust were kind of mid like we weren't

really pushing them right, Like we'rejust like like thinking that we like deserve
to go viral when like we weren'tactually making the good content. And then
I don't like when did it likeflip do you remember? I think it
was Branda? Yeah, it wasbranded, yeah, brand people off.
People loved it. So I've seenin the comments that it pisses people off.
With shocks me like, why whatis it? Why do people get

pissed over that? I mean,first of all, I don't smoke weed.
I don't As I said, Idon't smoke weed at all, and
we we when we enjoy writing retretesand Joshua Trees. So Bill got me
higher than I've ever been in mylife watching these clips and those lyrics.

off the paper to them and weall looked at you, shir like yeah,
that's it, like crazy, andyeah, I think the lyrics are
so simple. They're memorable, andthey're I don't think they're controversial, but
like they're opinionated and pissed people offfor some reason, yeah, really badly.
I don't know why people get soangry. Yeah, I guess like
whenever you have an opinion, peoplejust get mad, even though it's just

Drake was on Nickelodeon. It's justa bunch of realizations that people are mad
that we figured out too late.Yeah, So what it is when we
were like, oh my god,this video is four hundred views, it's
going viral, and then the nextday it had a million. And then

what we did is we responded toevery comment in like a nice, thankful
way, and then people were likewait, I actually like it, and
then those people would start arguing,so it was like this song sucks,
don't be a musician anymore. Andthen people were like, no, I
love it. Then they would startfighting, and then the comments section exploded.
And once you light the fire inthe comments, and do you think
that's why it's blowing up right now? I see it everywhere, like Braindad

is everywhere right now. I justhit over a million streams right on that.
Yeah, that's huge. So what'sI feel like when you see that?
So cool? Until we had amillion, we're a real band now,
manager Wow, But yeah, itfeels really good to millions, like

aren't fortunate to hit. I alsofeel like there's something to like feeling old,

Like I think this is my firsttime because I'm thirty, right so
this is my first time starting tofeel old, which is kind of crazy.

never felt like an older person beforein my life until right now. Like

We took a meeting at Atlantic andZach filmed the video because the guy's like,

a lot of joke songs as well, So we just like showed him that
and Zach caught it on camera andthat just skyrocketed everything and now and then
we were at a writing retreat inuh, I don't know, somewhere in
the middle of nowhere, which wedo occasionally, and we went to this
bar where there were like five peoplethat like live in the mountains, like

mountain man and is that a correctand we were like, Julian grabbed this
guitar and placed our twenty three andhe did. I filmed it from the
corner and like got their reactions.The big guys in like camouflage half probably
loved it watching it, and Ithink they did, I don't know,
And that video overnight got ten millionviews and now it's out over twenty million,

at like forty five to fifty millionviews across the films right now, which

Yeah, there's like definitely always weirdweird reactions from people who whether to go
to Land. We know what ourown shows like that mint like it's gonna

find the line between like having agood time but also taking yourself seriously as

like we are musician. Yeah,we're definitely still like teetering the line.
It's like we're definitely like not inthe clear of the joke band allegations,

just like in general, like whenwe make music, we're just we're just
trying to have fun whenever we do, and like occasionally we'll just get high
and write some stupid lyrics and justisn't that like the point of being a

that he was also doing his likeown solo ship. Yeah. For like
three or four years, Zach andI were just like producer artists to him,
and like I was helping him writehis stuff and he was helping me
produce my stuff. And then Tristancame around. I was just studying animation
really and play. Yeah, Iwas studying math A Chapman. I actually

went to Chapin at the same timewith him, did you really Yeah,
but you guys didn't know each other. You still met because I was a
little math nerd Yeah, I mean, and then I was working at a
video editing job. We're both videoeditors. Yeah, oh wow. Luckily
