(00:00):
Mikayla, are you ready over there? Hey? Take your time, dude,
I mean I'm only on my lunchbreak, so awkward. Okay,
ready, I'm ready, Mikayla.Ready, what's up? I'm John,
I'm Marley and I'm Mikayla, andyou're listening to on the Playlist and I
heard Radio New Music podcast. I'vegot something to say. I've got some
(00:23):
Sorry, I've got some big,big news. You're coming in with some
pipe and hot tea. I sure, I am. Okay, Welcome on
the playlist, John, This isMarley. Hi, Hi, all right,
what is this news? Sorry?I jumped the gun. I'm excited
about it too. So obviously, coachell a Weekend one is this weekend.
(00:44):
Next weekend is Coachell Weekend two,and then Stage Coach going to I was
at dinner last night with none otherthan Mikayla. John. I was there
for the appetizer yeah yeah, andthen he left. So anyway, I'm
just kidding. So Mikayla goes,I want to go to Stage Coach this
year. Shut the f And Isaid, Mikayla, you've had a cider
(01:07):
and a half. Are you doyou actually mean this? Do you actually
mean this. We got it,and she was like, no, I'm
serious, And then she posted onher Instagram asking if anyone knows of someone
selling a stage coach risk. Guys, guys, guys, guys, guys,
guys. Okay, this listen. This is huge news. This is
the universe. So I had tobuy a stage coach car camping pass right
(01:30):
because I'm car camping the past thatI found super good deal. Some guy
to drive to Narnia for picked itup, though he would only sell it
if I bought an extra stage coachwristband. And then now I have to
sell that wristband because I needed tobuy it. So I have a wristband
for sale for stage Wait three days, three days, it's in my room.
(01:53):
I need to sell it the nexttwo weeks. This I am sweating
that. What are you that's goingto stagecoun I am. I don't think
she expected this to work out,so I really don't think she did.
Came back out of this now, yeah you are in this. Okay,
Oh my god, god, thishot. She just got feet red.
(02:15):
You're buying my stagecoach ticket? Howmuch is it? I don't know?
Said, let's get you there. We'll figure it out all right. Wow,
okay, So on a scale ofone to like ten down, where
are you actually at like ninety?Oh my god, I know. I
literally John, I had to askher again three times last night. I
(02:38):
was like, you had a ciderand a half? Are you sure you
actually wanted to have? You hadany ciders this morning? No? Got
espresso though, I espresso, yes, but she gets like this over expresso.
Marley did say that it was goingto be like probably one hundred degrees,
so that did stress me out alittle bit. Well, here's the
thing, though, this is supposedto be so last year was one of
the hottest years on record. ThisI mean it's supposed to Last year it
(03:00):
was too much hot, just toomuch. This year supposed to be way
better. I mean Coachello Weekend oneright now, Sunday is supposed to be
sunny in seventy five degrees. It'sgoing to be like I was telling Michay's
going to be this weekend to golike four yeah, okay, so it's
not all day in the sun thehouse for a long time and we kind
(03:23):
of make our way over depending onwho we want to see first. Like
obviously everyone has to kind of sharethere who they want to see. But
for you, who doesn't really carethat much. You're just here for the
vibes, and the vibes are good. Yeah, I can't even go to
stage Coach. I can't either.I can't believe you have an extra ticket
what I know, the odds.So we have to like prepare her now,
(03:43):
Yeah, come up with the listI'm going to send her. I'm
going to make her a playlist.Yeah, I need to make that a
playlist as well of all the peoplethat you want to see, that kind
of thing. It's a little bitearly, but I'm writing this down.
We'll have a topic of Marley andI preparing you Mickaya for Stage Coach the
episode before that happens, which isnext on the playlist. It's literally two
weeks from now. On the playlist, take Stage Coach. Yeah, I
(04:04):
have a little mic and you'll bethere. I'll be there. Let's take
Stage Coach podcast. An I am. That's one of the reasons why I
wanted to really go, because I'venever seen back and that's iconic. This
(04:25):
is becoming the best day. Thankyou, thank you. I cannot wait.
Yeah, this is this is bigMichaels sweating Wow, because that like
made me feel better because today Iwas looking at how many people were going
to Coachella weekend one, and like, I know that we work in media,
(04:45):
we work in radio, so ofcourse we're going to know people that
are going, right, but Idon't know. I'm like checking my Instagram
today and more people than I realizedwe're going to Coachella. Like I thought
when I saw the lineup that like, no one was really going this year.
I feel like that was the impressionI was under. No, I
feel the same way, and likepeople was there. I'm like, wait,
hold on, I thought we allagreed, did not go to Coachella,
agree that the lineup was not good. I'm like, did I want
(05:06):
to go to Cochella? Am Ihaving fomo? Or is it just day
one and everyone's getting there one?Yeah, it's day one, But like,
who would you realistically want to seethere? That's a good question.
But you spend all that money togo for no one person? But exactly
who is person the one person thatyou're missing the most from the Coachella lineup?
(05:27):
I think for me, no doubt. Oh yeah, that iconic.
That's a good one. That's agood one. Then I have to pull
it up because it is Bleachers performing. I was gonna say mine's Bleachers y
yeah, because it becomes such ahuge album where they're doing like a one
night only kind of thing, anda lot of people have been doing that
shows. I think you're right,it is as I just feel like after
(05:51):
this album with them at stage orCoachella mixing them up now, I just
feel like that's that's definitely what Iwould love to see. But you're right,
I think I'll still be able tosee them another time, Like that's
not a stage coach or Wow,I got to stop doing that specific performance
right. I'm looking at the lineupright now, and honestly, the people
that I would want to see arepeople that I would pay to see alone.
(06:13):
So it's not worth going to Coachellafor like Renee rap is on here.
Oh that'd be sick. Yeah, but I could go alone. Yeah,
like again Bleachers. Okay, throwinga Clando one in there for you,
Dom Dolla, San Francisco Disco.Who's them, guys. Here's how
the evolution of this is going togo. We just got Mikayla to a
(06:35):
stage coach that's for getting Marley TODC. No, absolutely not that will that
will never happen. I don't thinkI want you to think back for a
second to when MICHAELA sounded like thatabout Stage Coach. It was not that
long a time, but I wouldnever go to Stage Coach because no,
she actually never gets back. Isaid, you know what, if I
was going to Stage Coach, itwould be Pierre that's one, and she's
(06:58):
going. We got Marley to likea half emo half eight M event last
December. Okay, but that's sodifferent. I can I can do that.
E d C is like a wholeother levels you think it is.
Yeah, let's be so honest.Like my sister is really into like dom
Dalla and like Zoo and all ofthose EDM artists. So like, if
(07:18):
I were to go to shows,it's usually when I go with her,
but she loves dom Dollar, Likeshe almost convinced my dad to fly to
Red Rocks with her to He's he'sdefinitely such a vibe right now, another
dude with a six stash Okay,Australian DJ. I just yeah, that's
that's definitely what I'd like to see. But again, I feel like he's
(07:40):
playing a lot of places, soyou don't have to be at Coachella specifically.
Have you both been to Coachella.I've never been. I've never been
to Coachella either. If I wasever gonna go, because it is on
a lit like I did want togo, yeah back in the day,
but I just feel like the lineupshaven't been good. If I was to
go to one, it should havebeen the one like two or three years
ago with Harry and Billy Dude.Yeah, I was there, and like
(08:01):
just I think I was there.Yeah, it was like a bunch of
people, So that's the year Iwould have have went. I'm sure that
they were probably performing at eleven orlike kind of the earlier in the day,
but it's still even better. Lesscrowds. Yeah, it's such a
vibe. I'm curious though, becauseyou guys have done Lallapalooza. I've never
done it. I want to go, I guess I guess what I want
to know is I want to knowhow Coachella compares to all of these other
(08:24):
huge festivals now because there are somany all over the country. It's like,
maybe that's kind of the reason thatCoachella has lost some of its glamor.
It's just like another one in amillion festivals. Well. Also,
I feel like Coachella, to yourpoint, did lose its glamour also because
there's this stigma around it that's nolonger about the music. It's about what
you're wearing and who you're there withand you know, branding. It's like
(08:48):
very and I feel like that's avery hot take, but also not a
hot take. But I think therewas I think there was a time that
that definitely peaked, like maybe thetwenty sixteen to eighteen era. I feel
like it was very Instagram centered,it felt like, and like Revolve is
another it's in that like its ownfestival there that seems like it's for the
influencer. That's not to knock anyonewho actually goes because they do like the
(09:09):
music. I'm not saying that that'sstrictly what it's about, but I feel
like it has it had that glamourfor a lot, for a long period
of time where a few years itwas very Instagram influencer type thing, and
I think it's kind of weaving outof that a little bit too. Yeah,
it's also still relevant, right, like even if that's not exactly how
(09:30):
it was. That's just what thethat's what the view was about it.
Yeah, I mean for true orfalse. But anyway, I'm pumped,
right, Yeah, she's she's gonnago that's awesome. Wow, I can't
just have an extra ticket, Likethis is unreal. I That's that's what's
blowing my mind actually, is thatthis just fell into place in twenty four
hours for you. You have aplace to stay, you have a ticket.
(09:52):
I to make a bold claim herewhat I think thirty year old Mikayla's
better getting better at age? Dude, she turned thirty and she's like,
let's go, I need to livemy life. Yeah. All of a
sudden, I'm going, wow, that's insane. How is how is thirty?
By the way, you just turnedthirty on Tuesday? Wow. Even
saying thirty that many times in arow sounds wild. Three days into my
(10:15):
thirties and it's you feel different alittle bit, I think, And I
think it's a little bit over hypedin the beginning. You don't really feel
it. It's just like the strikeof being saying it. Saying it is
the worst part. Yeah, Ithink it's just weird to know that I
have friends that are thirty, butlike I'm twenty nine, so like I'm
you know, it's thinking it there, yeah, but it like feels weird.
(10:35):
It's like, oh, yeah, you know, Mikayla just turned thirty,
John's thirty. I'm like, oh, it's so weird that, like
I was there, I feel thatmyself and my friends are in our young
twenties until I see real young twentyyear olds. Yeah, for the most
part. You know, when yousee people out at bars who are in
college still whatever, and I thinkI'm that age. Until I see that,
I'm like, oh man, andyou're like, wow, they're really
they're really young. Yeah. No, I agree, like I're still like
(10:56):
I'm twenty one, but I'm not. Because when I hang out with twe
one year olds are twenty five yearold, I'm like, I feel old.
I feel old, but my coworkersare are in you know, they're
twenty three to twenty five range, and even sometimes with them, I'm like,
oh my god, I'm old.I feel old. Yeah, But
when I was, when we wereyounger, early twenties, I just thought
thirty was so far away, soold, like, and I just want
(11:20):
to say it's not. I'm soproud of us, guys, because when
we did too. I went outfor Michayla's birthday a couple of weeks back,
the pre birthday. We stayed outtill like twelve fifteen. I'm so
proud of us. I think Iwas in bed by twelve fifteen, and
I was like, wait a second, I really at eleven thirty, I
kind of like going on it andthirty and coming home. That's that's the
(11:43):
way to do it. That's theway to do it. I would so
much rather like go get dinner andthen maybe go out, and then if
we do go out, we're likeout until like maybe eleven thirty, and
then we're home by midnight. Itfeels like we've been out all night.
Yeah, and then I still geta full night sleep. And the bar
like started to get really cracking oncewe started leaving, and I was like,
Wow, we're seeing the night crowdright now. This is so cool,
(12:07):
which is so interesting because I rememberlike going out to the bars in
college and then sometimes going to thatbar in the daytime and I didn't even
recognize the bar. I was like, oh, they have paintings like that
on the wall, like that John'snever paid attention to. Yeah, I
just would have never known. Butthat's the opposite side of that. How
wild. The highlight of that night, though, was the corn dogs.
Oh my god, I've never reacheduese dog and that was one of the
(12:28):
most delicious things. So we wentout in Newport Beach, California, and
there's this there's this corn dog placeright next to the pier where all the
bars are, and it's open tolike two am. And my roommate had
a few drinks and walked into thisplace and says, I'm gonna get corn
dogs for everyone. And he said, yeah, sure. He says,
I'm gonna walk out with a hundredJohn was trying to leave. John's like,
(12:48):
okay, if anyone wanted one,all of us said no, And
then all of a sudden, he'slike, go back to have one.
I just paid over one hundred dollars. John, y a platter full of
John Dogs. You can't wait.I just bought one hundred dollars worth of
corn dogs. Why, He's like, I'm not kidding. I did no.
I thought he was messing with me. And he walks out with that
platter like he was going to feeda shelter, and I was like,
(13:11):
I know, I have to stayin an hour. We have these corn
dogs. It was worth it.It was worth that I was sick.
Yeah. John loves hanging out withus, No, I really do.
When the hours start to get later, stay out later than the biggest the
difference between us and John is Johnacts thirty when we go out. It's
true you're still twenty nine, butwe I'm still acting like I'm twenty five.
(13:31):
Yeah, I'm starting to think thatI'm all talk, honestly, because
I feel like maybe you're just nowstarting Why I feel outside of the going
out scene, like I'm the youngestone, and then we actually when it's
time to like put your money whereyour mouth is and go out and have
a good time, then I'm theone trying to go home first. Yeah,
I would be worry embarrassed to myself. Yeah. I think it's because,
(13:52):
like I truly love mornings, right, like I work on the morning
radio show, but even on theweekends, Like I love having my mornings.
I love being up at seven andhaving my coffee, getting some emails
done. And I think that whenI sleep, and oh god, I'm
making it worse. Old checking getemails on a Saturday. I like,
no. The sad part is Iwas saying that not even thinking that that
(14:13):
sounded old. That sounded really mymind. And I didn't mean. I
didn't mean to bring it down sofast, but I was just like,
it's like, you are not provenanyone anyone's point. I do like morning,
so I don't like to sleep theday away. I don't either if
I wake up land either, Ifeel like I've wasted my weekend. Yeah,
we're you gonna work by that time, like our show's over. I
can't even sleep in past eight thirtyanymore. Yeah, that's the latest second.
(14:35):
You get up early. Yeah youwent and got your hair down a
like seven am after that night.Yeah. But Marley, even if we
go to bed at two or three, she's up at eight. So I
can't. I can't sleep past inthe morning like I just I'm awake.
I can lay in bed for hours. Don't get me wrong. I'm I'm
up at eight eight thirty. AndI just feel like after going out as
productive as you want to be,Like your head just says, nope,
(14:56):
we're not doing that. You know, which, You're allowed to have those
days of once in a while.Drawn no one's asking you to do it
every weekend. It's just scary. It's not scary. I think my body
just shuts down. But oh,okay. Anyways, we've been yapping for
quite a minute, but for goodpurpose. So we're gonna take a quick
break and we'll come back with thenew music from today. All right,
(15:26):
it's a new music Friday. Alot of music out today. Time to
get into some of it. I'mgonna throw this ox in here. When
we were what are we? Whatare we smiling about? Did I miss
the second part? No, you'regood, it's fine. I'll tell you.
It's just about it's something stupid andthen I feel out the loop.
(15:46):
It's just so embarrassing. Anyway,Okay, tears in my eyes. So
new music from today, I guessthe big release. First, we got
a new song from Dua Lipa. It's called Illusion, Easy Bob, Easy
(16:18):
do a Leap a Bob. Ifeel like even her songs are like,
aren't great? Are still really good? Every time? Yeah? That's what
it was. It's not my favorite. Yeah, I'm with you on that,
you know. I think I heardit once and I was like,
it's still a good typical do aleap of track. You know, it's
a good dance track, but therewas nothing about it where I was like,
oh, this is like Hoodini pleaseme, still stuck in my head
(16:40):
months after it came out, Likebut this one, I was like,
okay, like yeah, my favorite. That's how I felt too. I
was like, okay, this isanother one, Like it's not like a
forgettable one per se, but kindof. But then like if someone puts
it on, like, I'm notupset. You know, I'm not gonna
be like this song again. I'mnever gonna be upset if anyone puts any
due a leap on let's just beclear. But yeah, but this one,
to your point, it's not oneof those ones where I'm gonna pull
(17:00):
it out when I want to listento it. Does it kind of feel
like Dualy but is kind of likeMeghan Trainer, where like they found their
recipe of like the songs they makeand what works for them and they just
keep hitting that. Well. ButI'm not mad about it. I think
Megan Trainer does that too, likeshe's very within her wheelhouse of that genre
of music. I guess you couldsay, But yeah, it never bothers
(17:22):
me. I'm like, yeah, keep doing what works. I like the
sound. I'm gonna keep listening toit if I like it. Yeah,
And that's kind of how dow Leapis for me. Okay, let's see
what else we got. Okay, this is one of my favorites of the
week. Here. It's by Shabboozi, who is one of the featured artists
on Beyonce's new country album. Yeah. The songs called the bar Song,
and it has been all over myTikTok and it has become one of my
favorite releases this week because sell thembringing another out any more, stepping on
(17:51):
excited. She don't need a niceflood Lord, there's a body downtown fifties.
Everybody had it. I love that. But can we talk about the
tipsy sampling? Yes, one fromJap it comes to Yeah, gotta junk
(18:17):
out on the dance mall. Iknow, I thought that was so cool.
And I'm starting to like notice someof these artists that that Beyonce put
on her album. Right, She'strying to like bring these other black country
artists along with her, like whileshe's paving the way with Cowboy Carter,
and I just feel like, nowI'm really noticing these artists and I'm like,
wow, I probably wouldn't have noticedthat song before, but I was
like, oh shit, Boozy,I recognize him from the Beyonce album.
(18:38):
This sounds a bang or d Yeah, that's that's a good one. It's
a bang. And I looked throughhis other stuff. He's got great country
music and a lot of these otherartists that were on her album too,
like Britney Spencer Tanner Adell came outwith a new song this week called Whiskey
Blues, and these are artists that, like, I'm paying extra attention to
honestly because Beyonce and like credits areher for doing that. I feel like
(19:00):
so many of these like black countryartists are killing it right now and it's
so cool. I feel like, you know, there's some hate online between
like country and pop country that I'vebeen kind of seeing. I think when
an artist comes out with pop countrymusic, even post Malone, some like
diehard country fans are like, no, this is not real country, this
is this is pop country. AndI always feel like that's like who cares,
(19:22):
you know, Like, who areyou to gate keep music? Like
I don't think you have to necessarilylove every version of your genre of music.
But like, if anything, itjust improves the genre, Like it
makes more people like country, andthen it makes more artists get into country,
and then it makes more country music. I feel like expanding the genre
is just to win for everybody.Well that's like jelly Roll. I mean,
jelly Roll is like he's one oflike he's up on that stage coach
(19:47):
lineup. Yeah, but he's alsogot hits on alternative radio, and you
know, all his sound goes inmultiple different genres and that's what they kind
of like highlight him for being ableto have the different sound for different genres.
Like why why should genres matter somuch? Like I feel like genres
only serve as a way to classifymusic that you like, just to make
(20:08):
it easy to identify it, Like, oh, I really like electronic sounds.
I like EDM, you know whatI mean. But I don't think
it needs to be such like astrong structured wall to where like things have
to fit into this genre like inorder. I don't know, like that
bothers me, you know, andyou see that in every genre, like
even for example, like EDM,like it's not my number one favorite style
of music. But I'm always goingto have like a firm place in my
(20:30):
heart for that kind of music.I've liked it for over ten years now.
I've been going to so many EDMfestivals. I still love pop DM
like I love Z you know,And if you go to like there's so
many hardcore DM heads that are like, that's not EDM, that's pop DM,
and like it is, but likeso what like there you can still
have your kind of music, butlike the Chainsmokers are still tight for whatever
(20:51):
they do. So yeah, Idon't know that bugs me speaking of EDM.
That kind of brings me to mynext song, Marley. This was
on Yours Too, Noted coming outwith the new song called under My Breath.
(21:17):
I don't think they know how tomiss no no, I really don't
know. I truly believe Noted areliterally some of the most underrated music producers,
not even in just DM but inmusic period. Yeah. Every time
they come out with a song,I'm like, God, I love this
and this one just like this oneput me in my feels if that's weird
to say it. It doesn't seemlike one that would do that, but
(21:40):
it kind of did. Like they'reessentially the song is about like that first
time you discover that you want totell someone that you love them, like
those feelings that you have for them, but you're so scared of what that
would sound like out loud and howthey might judge you. So like in
your head, you're saying it overand over. Yeah, and like,
I just maybe that's because I'm someonewho like try to closet a lot of
those feelings at first, and ittakes me a long time to let that
(22:03):
out. So I think when Icrush hard, like I remember those initial
stages of just thinking that over andover in your head, Like you want
to say it out loud so bad, like you want to tell someone how
you feel, but you're like scaredalmost, you know. I loved the
line that was I try to makemy colossal feelings feel casual. Yes,
I was like, dang, becauseyou try to like it, Yeah,
(22:25):
it's so hard. And I thinkthat like when you when you want to
tell someone how you feel about them, there's almost this like wall between what's
in your head in that reality. And I also feel like music is just
a great way to like blend thosetwo together, you know, it almost
feels like this song is you lettingout all those emotions that you just want
to say in your head. Hervoice kind of gives that feel to it.
(22:45):
Also, Yeah, like she's kindof got this like almost rasp a
little bit, so it almost kindof sounds like she's like like yelling,
like you know what, Like howelse to like describe it? I completely
agree, but so and I thinkthis is something that Noted again so well.
They always find these vocalists that conveyso much emotion in the way that
they sing. Yeah, I'm like, I don't even know who this girl
(23:07):
is. No Riley Beaterer, neverheard of her, but I saw I
like to scope to her TikTok toobecause she was posting more clips of the
song like before the song came out, and I was just like, how
great, And I think I thinkit's her song. They just produce it,
Okay, I'm not one hundred percentsure how that works, because I've
seen this pop up for me too, and I was like, Wow,
this is another banger, like thisis so good, so good every time.
(23:29):
So love you Noted. But thenI'm gonna get upset with you guys
for a minute, not with youguys, but like with you, we're
collectively going to get upset. Okay, So Jake, you know Jake right,
Jacob already looking dude, super tall, independent artist. He always has
those songs that like this, yeah, oh yes, yes, yes,
(23:51):
you're literally from my hometown, sothat's fine. He's from Boston, Rhode
Islands. So he's been teasing thissong this week called This Is What Slow
Dancing Feels Like. It's so andI was in love with this. It's
(24:19):
a very different sound for it totally. It's very different, and I like
the name This Is What Slow Dancingfeels Like because it feels like a very
first dance slow dance song. Itfeels like kind of old school, and
even in the verse, it remindedme very much of like a Steven Sanchez
type sound. Yes, that's whatI thought of my plot it in your
(24:45):
Skin up what I was gonna say. I feel like you've been really into
that sound research. I don't knowyou've been having like What's leave yeah Lave
and Stephen Sanchez and even this songlike I feel like you're gravitating more time.
I was like sixty and then it'sthis and then it's a country place
(25:08):
I had this random thought in myhead just because we were hanging out at
Happy Hour for Michayla's birthday last night, and I remember this thought when Michael
Bublay came on the speaker at thebar and I was like, man,
I love Michael Boys, and Istarted to think, like, that's one
of That's my first concert ever wentto was Michael blub Blay. Like I
really I was in jazz band growingup, so I feel like I really
love that traditional band. I didn'trealize he was in jazz band there,
(25:34):
jazz man, but I think that'swhat it is. I feel like these
old timey artists just kind of remindme of that old timey music feel,
you know. Yeah, I thinkit's so cool. It's probably nostalgic a
little bit for you too. Yeah, hold on, gotta get to what
I'm upset about though. Sorry backto Jake. Okay, I'm upset with
him. Oh sorry a little bit, Okay, So then we'll stop admiring
(25:55):
the song. So he's teasing thisall week, okay, and then last
night he posts on his Instagram andessentially says, oh, like it's not
coming out till Monday. Now youcan't I've already committed. I've already committed
telling this this was gonna be oneof my favorite picks on New Music Friday.
I'm talking about it now. Couldhave talked about it next week because
it comes out next week, butI'm talking about it ahead of time.
It ruined my schedule. I'm excitedfor this song now and it's not even
(26:18):
out. Oh so that's not outyet. No, it's out on Monday.
Wow, just because he didn't wait, So, did you just play
us a clip from what he's beenteasing? Yes, Oh my god,
love you, Jake. I don'teat any of this, but like still,
I was just like so letdown becauseI was so excited to hear this
song. It was gonna be myfavorite one this week. And to his
point, it was kind of cleverthe way he not clever, but funny
the way that he posted about it. He said, Hey, guys,
(26:40):
I'm really sorry. My label won'tlet me put this song out for a
while, so I'm holding onto it. And then if you swipe it says
psych I'm an independent artist my label. I don't have a label. I
just wasn't done with the song yet, so I have to finish it so
it can be perfect. I'll dropit on Monday. Oh my gosh.
All right, so you're funny, but also like finish the song you told
me it's gonna be on April twelve. April twelve, I'm looking for this
(27:00):
song in New Music Friday. It'snot there. Get to work, Jake,
you know anyway? I get itkind of heated taking my OX out?
Who's next? Sure, I'll goall right, thrown you tap it
in there? You want to dosomething funny? Always yesterday someone had asked
me if we really put the oxand what did you tell them? I
(27:22):
know exactly. I know exactly whoasked you that too, because I've also
been asked that same question. Iwas like, I don't know, what
do you mean? Look, Iknow it's taken it out to put it
back in. Yeah, tell itthere? Does that not sound real to
you? This is a real ox. This is theater of the mind here.
Oh too funny? So I loveit anyway, guys, I've been
(27:45):
waiting for this song to come out, Okay for weeks. Do you know
Little Mix briefly? Yeah? Okay, So loved them, loved Sada.
I only saw them truly once theytried to break America. They really didn't.
They perform that her Art festival inVegas once. Oh really? And
then Perry Edwards, who just releaseda new song today that I've been waiting
(28:07):
for. She actually dated Zane inDirection Dane Maleck from One Direction. They
were both on No she was onX Factor she wasn't, but they I
need to check it, fact checkthis hold on. I feel like the
same thing was going to pull youback into who she was. Yeah,
I think that helps. I feellike that's how you would know. Thank
you, I got you, John, don't you worry. Yeah. They
(28:29):
were on X Chapter UK okay, and they made history by becoming the first
group ever to win X Factor UK. Oh wow. So I've been so
excited about this song for it tocome out for weeks now it's finally here.
Saw them at the iHeart Festival thatI think that was my first time
seeing them. But Perry Edwards actuallyhad an emergency surgery that day of the
festival, so she couldn't performed,So she didn't get to perform on stage.
(28:52):
I think like twenty seventeen of twentyeight, okay, sometime in that
window. Yeah, and that waslike their one chance to kind of like
break America, and then they hadaudio issues. It was just I was
like, they had one chance, and I'm like so mad that they really
didn't. But then I saw themone other time, really briefly, sad
I didn't see a full show. They kind of broke up or took a
little break. Right now, they'reall do winning side projects. But Perry
(29:15):
Edward's song is the song of thesummer. She dated Zane Malick. She
was unexpected they were on X Factor. I think this song is kind of
about their relationship, like, youknow, not forgetting about a relationship,
waring wondering what could have been.Like, Wow, let me know if
(29:45):
that's the song of the summer, because it is a bop. I know
her vocals are so good. Isaw something that Ed Sheer and co wrote
that with her. Wow, that'sa fun fact that this makes it even
better. Honestly, the only factI know, I honestly don't. I'm
not really that familiar with Little Mix, and I don't really know Perry Edwards.
But I just remember seeing a tweetfrom somebody saying I should probably fact
check that, but I'm pretty sureit's true. It was like so I
(30:07):
think it was Billboard or somebody thatwas like, oh, ed Sheeran came
and wrote this track with Perry Edwardsfrom a little mixed and I was like,
oh, no way, yeah thissong is that makes sense? So
good? Yeah, but there's aline that says, I heard you fell
in love? What somebody knew?I know you heard that I found someone
too, and then just talks aboutyou know, she's moved on, he's
moved on, but like, whoawould it have been? Like, don't
forget about what they had even ifit didn't last. It is so good
(30:30):
it almost sounds really is it weirdthat it almost sounds country to me?
I don't know. I think Ican hear. I think her voice kind
of rides that country pop like. She's such a powerful voice too. Somewhere
in the song she does belts likea high no and let me tell you
(30:52):
so good. Yeah, that's agood one. I'm excited for more music
from her. Hope she releases more. So yeah, she like, is
this gonna be a solo thing fromher from here on out? Or we
don't know. I don't know.I think it's like a side thing right
now. I don't know. IfLittle Mix is done forever. I know
some of them had kids. Shehad a kid, so I don't know.
Were they like a nineties thing LittleMix? No awkward two thousands direction?
(31:14):
Like it was like the year recess. Yes, that's really That's why
I didn't know much about them twentytwelve. It was twenty eleven. They
were an expector. Weren't they engaged? Sane and Perry God, I think
they I think they were engaged.I'm looking it up. Huh. But
oh well, while we're on thetopic, what do we think of Zaane's
new song Alienated? Okay? Itwas. I mean, I see he's
(31:45):
got that same vibe, Like hisvibe is very similar to the to the
last one. He's very dark andmoody. Yeah. Yes, we were
engaged, Okay, that's what. And then they called it quits in twenty
fifteen. But he had a crushon her for a long time after,
and then when he was it kindof gave him that chance to say like,
hey, like, I have acus from you, and I don't
(32:07):
think she was into it, andthen finally she was. And how do
you think celebrities tell each other thatthey have crushes? Because you probably just
say that you think so. Butthe thing is, it's so much easier
for them to communicate though, becausethat's you so have to be cordial and
just fun and nice with all thefamous people that you meet because you'll probably
work with them someday. But like, how do you or cross paths at
the at the very least exactly,And so all of a sudden you gotta
(32:28):
be like, what do you think? That's what do you think? Awkward?
Celebrity thing is you have that opportunity, whereas like us, if we
were crushed on a celebri like, how are you contacting them to let them
know we're not? I want toknow how Like the waitress and zac Efron
actually started, Actually he would haveto make the move. I think if
(32:49):
someone's famous and someone's like not inthat celebrity world, I think the celebrity
person has to make the move. But like, if you're both celebrities,
I guess you just got to shootyour shot and hope for the best.
Yeah, huh, I can't.And so the other song is by Sabrina
Carpenter Espresso about Me. You canseepisode you can see like why did I
(33:22):
love this one? This one Iso love it, okay, And it's
just like such a funny way tojust say, like, you know this
guy, like is it she's adream come true for this guy pretty much
like you can't stop thinking about herall night? Yeah? I mean I
love that that, like yes,and she goes, isn't that sweet?
(33:44):
I guess so she okay? Wellwhatever, right? No, I love
that. But also like in anew relationship or a new crush, like
you're excited to talk to this personthat you can stay up all night.
I don't know if you're up thinkingabout of all night where you can't sleep.
But I just thought it was soclever and honestly, she's coming out
with the bops, let me tellyou she has like I've not really been
(34:05):
I don't know. I didn't reallyknow her much in the Disney Channel days,
like it just it wasn't my thing. But like these last couple of
bops she's been coming out with. This last album she came out with,
I'm like, some of these areactually really sick. And I loved this
track. And she's been singing fora while since, Like Disney Channel,
she was at a couple of wangos, like opening the show or like a
pre show, and like now she'sgetting the recognition because she has such a
(34:27):
great voice too, and she's openingup for Taylor. Yeah, she definitely
broke that Disney channel. Yeah yeah, no question about that. That's very
true. But it's I feel likethat's sometimes really hard for Disney stars to
do. So but she's I mean, like I said, that was that's
an actual banger. Is so goodand so she's definitely broken that mold.
(34:50):
I mean, obviously she has foryears, but with emails I can't send.
That whole album was amazing. Waithold the phone, MICHAELA. You
said you had Is this why youhad your first espresso today? No,
but I was thinking about it.Isn't that sweet? I guess, so,
like what a coincidence? You wait, that's not your first? Was
(35:12):
my first? I just I'm justbeing dramatic. I didn't have coffee in
my apartment, so Marley was like, you want to go walk and get
coffee? Up? I do?And you don't drink coffee really do every
day now that I'm on since theMorning show. Oh yeah, it'll change
with a tea person. Yeah,I like go through phases like every few
years. I'm like I'm gonna trytea again, and then Tea just doesn't
do what I needed to do,and I'm like, teez sure, like
come on, I need like somereal, you know, something real.
(35:35):
I need something I know. Iwalked out with my quad shot and Mikaiela's
like, is that just espresso onthere? I said, sure it has,
and she hit me with that lastpodcast we were doing she had.
I was like, what is thatdelicious coffee looking drink? She's like a
quad shot four shots of espresso overbrown sugar with a splash of oatmeal herself
from a comod. So I haveone more song though. It is by
(35:58):
Emma Line and I actually met heryears ago. She dated one of my
friend's friends. I went to hisbirthday. She was there and she's actually
from Rhode Island as well. Hersongs the last couple of years have been
blowing up on TikTok. She haslike over one hundred million downloads, like
over three hundred and something million juston Spotify alone, but each song gets
(36:20):
like tens of millions of streams. But this is her new song called ninety
nine Boys and let me tell youThis song I'm like made me think I
was like, you know, you'reright, Like there are so many of
the same typical guys around that ifyou meet someone who like, yeah,
he's cute, but then he's justlike this sort of way, and you're
like, you're like just like everyother guy like next, like I can
get rid of you in a second. There's other men like yeah. And
(36:44):
I was like, girl, yes, so this is boys. Like I'm
(37:07):
not gonna lie, like when yousend me these songs to load into the
podcast, like, I usually don'tlisten to them ahead of time because I
want to be surprised. Yeah,I accidentally listened to these this time,
and this one I was like,Yo, this one's kind of a danger.
This one's so sick. Yeah, yeah, we should get her on
the pod. Yeah. Do youfeel like when you're scrolling through hints,
do you think that most guys arethe same okay, when they have the
(37:30):
same looking for something capital or notlooking for anything serious. Yes, yeah,
but I guess it just depends.Like I've met guys that are similar
and I'm like, oh, you'rejust another one of those guys. If
this doesn't work out, like,I'll swipe two guys later. It's gonna
be the same exact guy. Yeah, just how many guys you know,
I'm I'm thirty, Well, Imean swiped down a few men, and
(37:52):
I think we're kind of like, you know, all right, you just
like the other guy, or no, you're not the one, or this
or that. Like my friend rightnow who called up her engagement last year,
she's been talking to this guy thatis almost exactly like her ex,
and I'm like, why are yougiving this guy another chance? Like they've
only been talking for a month andshe already had to give him three chances,
three new chances, So like herex and like in the way he
(38:15):
acts, not necessarily looks. Yeah, the way he acts, they kind
of look a little bit similar. But he's just like every other guy that
you're into, because all of herguys are kind of the same. Yeah,
and they didn't work out on Likewhat makes you think that this guy
is different because he's not. He'sacting exactly like your exes And it's just
like that repeated pattern. But itSUCs to like watch someone go down that
(38:36):
road, and it's like it's soclear to you, you know on the
outside, come on, like stop, what are you doing? You can't
teach someone until they're ready. Youknow, they have to learn it on
their own to watch though. Yeahit is I get you. Yeah,
those are my three picks. Okay, take out your real ox. Thank
you if you want to hand thatover to Marley May. I think it's
a little I plugged it in.You didn't. I'm gonna beat you up,
(39:06):
all right. Well, John tookmy song that I was going to
talk about, don't want to lovethat little part right there again, it's
like my brain, I love that. So that was song number one.
(39:30):
Thank you, Thank you so muchfor listening. My second, uh song
that I want to talk about comesfrom the new Maggie Rogers album that just
meaning to give this more time. The album is called Don't Forget Me,
and I actually read on you guysknow the side Pitchfork. I read on
(39:52):
Pitchfork that she wrote and recorded thiswhole album in five days. What I'm
Pitchfork and that is crazy. Howmany songs are on it? I think
it's like ten or twelve. Yeah, it's like it's like forty minutes.
That's wild, I know, isn'tThat's just if you just like and she
just got her like master's degree orsomething. So she was probably doing that
(40:13):
in the middle of all of Idon't know, it's crazy. I wonder
if you just like write songs forsix months and then you have like four
albums worth of songs that you canjust drop whatever. But I guess you
change as an artist, so whichis exactly thank you for bringing that up
the reason why I've picked this song. This is the opening track to this
album to shade good Way so much, but it was gone, So I
(40:57):
think this is a brilliant opening trackto this album because the album feels very
different than her older projects. Herolder like albums and singles and songs were
all very like light and ethereal, and this album is very like edgy,
like more rock focused. I feelokay, even some like I feel like
(41:17):
sometimes it was even a little likefolky country, a little not country,
but like there's like different instruments inthere. But this song talks about how
like basically change is inevitable and althoughlike everything might not work out how you're
anticipating it, it, you know, always just everything falls the way that
it's supposed to. And she usesthe term honey shade of blue in that
(41:42):
in that chorus or in that yeahthe chorus, which I thought was so
like such a cool way to likedescribe how bittersweet sounds like a honey,
like a golden like shade of youknow, when you're like, oh,
why are you so blue? Yeah, but then when you think honey,
it's like it's like sweet. Yeah, Yeah, I like that. So
I thought that was so cool becauseyou know, the first verse she's talking
(42:04):
about like everybody's going crazy, likeyou know, I'm turning on the TV,
my mom's calling me, like they'retalking about selling my childhood home,
and the end of the first versesand everywhere I look, it seems we're
always saying goodbye. But then thesecond verse it's talking about how she's like,
I know this might sound like I'mhaving an existential crisis to those who
(42:25):
may not know me, but it'slike, So, I just thought that
the whole song, as you knowa Whole was a great intro to this
album, as it's kind of justvery different than what she's released prior.
And I just really liked it whenyou say that, and then you also
say that she wrote, I meanthe entire album in five days. I
wonder if, like, you getso inspired on what you want to write
(42:46):
about next, like what you wantyour next album to sound like that when
you get that inspiration, you justlock yourself in a room and you just
go in on music, which Iguess this is what I'm inspired. I
got to get it all out now. Yeah, it was. It was
just so cool to kind of piecetogether the first verse and the second verse
and then how the chorus sounds. But then listen to the whole rest of
the album and know that it's sodifferent than what she's put out before,
(43:07):
Like when you listen to this andthen you listen to like Alaska or light
On from Yeah so good, verydifferent light and like a lot of like
do do do Like this is allvery like guitar heavy. It's just it's
a very different sound. I sawI saw her pop up on my feed
saying that she's going to be atthe ticket booth at a lot of her
(43:27):
shows for this upcoming tour, soshe can sell you essentially tickets without all
the fees that you have to paywhen you buy through ticket Master or one
of those online. Yeah, she'sjust going to be there like selling you
cheaper tickets. So if you wanta cheaper ticket and you don't can't afford
and you don't want to pay allthe fees. She'll be there selling them
herself. Like how cool is that? And Ryan Baty's opening for her as
your boy I know, So I'mlike, I gotta go. I'm gonna
(43:51):
go buy my ticket. She said, La is one of the one of
the cities that she's going to bethere literally herself selling them. So that's
crazy, I know. So anyway, I really liked that one. I
think it's set up the album quitenicely, and it's just a good song,
just like think about you know, the bittersweet feeling of change and how
you know, even though it maynot look like what you pictured, it's
(44:14):
all going to fall into place howit's supposed to anyway, preach Ain't that
a lesson? Honeyshade of blue Baby? Before we get out of here,
can we recap our boys? Nightlyreal quick? We happened. We have
to talk about it, we do. What's happening? So Nightly one of
our favorite bands. On their Instagram, there was some video where Jonathan,
the lead singer, appears to bein the video. It kind of looks
(44:36):
like you're leaving the band. Hehanded them the disco ball that was it
tears my eyes. Well, they'vethey filled. I was got in a
car accident watching I was parking foryour birthday happy hour yesterday and I was
like what. And we didn't talkabout this all the three of us at
Michael's happy hour. Yes, wewere talking about it walking in the restaurant,
and then after you left, Marleyand I okay. So luckily in
(45:01):
the comments, someone was like, like, it's obviously everyone thought it's this
nightly breaking up and then they commentedback and said no, never, Yeah,
so that helps. It seems likehe's doing a little like side side
project social Action. Yeah, butdo you think it's a good idea for
him to do that. I feellike when artists are fully established, like
(45:22):
m then that's when they kind ofdo side projects. Well. I do
feel like this last album for themwas so great, and I feel like
it was so good. It seemsto be like they're on the edge of
really just like taking off right,Like they're like maybe one a couple of
songs away, so it's like, right when you got something really good going,
it's like, oh, now we'regoing to go do this this side
project. Is that what you're sayingyeah, it's like a little yeah off.
(45:44):
But everyone was commenting and they arerealizing they don't want Nightly to go
away. So I think it's justa way for them to you know.
Yeah, it's like, wait, they song drop a song? Please,
we need please? All right,Well, hey, we do have a
(46:07):
playlist that Marley updates. You cansearch on the playlist, but is in
parentheses. Guys. Concert calendar.Okay, that Knox next week? We
sure douesday. I'm so excited aboutthis. So our boy Knox is performing
(46:27):
in La next Tuesday, and wehad him in on the podcast. So
we're all homies now, right, like love them. It's gonna be one
of my best men in my wedding. Oh I'm getting married. I'm getting
married. Sometimes you guys start ithere first. So they invited us to
well, I'm gonna say the firstthing they invited us to because originally there
was going to be essentially a pizzaparty next door to the concert, and
(46:47):
the label reached out and said, hey, do you guys want to come
get pizza with us before the Knoxshow? And I was like, are
we going to Knox just pre pizzaparty? Yeah? We are. Yeah,
that just felt like the coolest thingever. And now it's Mark and
Margarita's No Hello Tacos and Margarita's ona Tuesday before that content, and I
feel like that's so sick. It'sgoing to be so fun. I'm so
looking forward to it. I don'tnormally drink on weeknights, but I'm going
(47:10):
to have a mark because it's amark with our boy Knox. Sure is
John showing his age again? That'senough of that. And then if anyone's
going to Bleachers on Wednesday, Bleachersare doing one night only that's this Wednesday,
Wow, right after in between Coachellperformances. Yeah, In tickets are
really hard to get, so Iprobably won't be able to do those one
(47:32):
night only shows are very very hardto get tickets into, yeah are.
It's also because they release it likethe day of right, Like when I'd
only show tickets on down hour whatand everyone goes and grabs them and it's
like you don't have time to bebare and then it's too late. If
it's sold out, it is againand it's so worth it. Like when
we get into that Laney one,it was man, what a show.
Yeah, all right, well,we'll be back next week with the brand
(47:52):
new episode where you listen to podcasts. We'll see later
