(00:00):
My birthday was so good, dude, it was so fun. I truly
have the best time done. Youwere there, even though you left at
six am. But yeah, that'smy bedtime, guys, that's my bedtime
on a Saturday, on a Friday, on a Friday Saturday. Those are
just that's how it works these ways. Listen. I was just happy he
showed up at all. He couldhave bailed. What do you mean by
(00:23):
that? What do you mean bythat? I think you know there?
What is that? It's a bagof orange jelly. No, I'm scared.
I don't know what that is.What's up? I'm John, I'm
Marley, and I'm MICHAELA. Andyou're listening to on the playlist and I
heard Radio New Music podcast. Ireally don't like that it moved like that.
(00:45):
I figured it out. Well,I don't know what it is.
But the trash bin is broken. So that is juice or water like an
orange drink. That is the sideof this that's going from inside the trash
can. Sure is Oh wow,so that's gross. And there's pizza boxes
and stuff and this someone was havinga party was actually I do have to
(01:06):
make a confession. I had amark for lunch. I also want to
say it was not me though.Whatever's in that trash can, the pizza
box that looks like a wine bag, not me? All right, you
say so, but I will admitto you what I did do before this.
I was meeting up with the coworkerto film with TikTok. And before
that, I was at a meetingand I had wine mark for lunch.
Wine Mark, where did you havea margarita? From listen? We were
(01:32):
having a meeting, our morning showwas having a meeting, and sometimes our
meetings just happened to take place ina Mexican restaurant across the street. They
have great which one is it?Yeah? I had my first Don Cuckoo's
mark over the weekend, dude, and how is it? It was freaking
delicious, the mark they really do. We were having a meeting there and
(01:53):
marks were going around, and whatam I gonna do? Be the guy
that doesn't get a mark. You'realready accusing me of being older than I
am, So I was like,I got to hold you. No.
The thing is, you're proving yourage no by your actions. No,
you want to be thirty? Bedtimeat seven pm. I gott to leave
a Birtha's six thirty Saturday, andI have to plan out when I'm going
to text John because if it's afterseven thirty, I know I won't hear
(02:14):
from him. Screwed. I honestly, I turned my phone off usually at
six thirty. That's jarring bedtime.Yea. Honestly seven on the dot.
I work for a morning show. What do you expect? I text you
six forty five one, and Iwas pissed. How to wait till the
morning for a response? It's pissed, it's late, it's not my fall
thirty, Grow up. Welcome tothe on the Playeffs podcast. Rumors are
(02:35):
going around that one of us outof marg don't know who it is.
My name is John Cammuchi. Wehave my friends here, Mikayla, hey,
Marley, Hello, and we're freshoff the gram Did you guys watch
the Grammys? Sure together together? We're missing you? Okay. Well I'm
an insight for that so well, you wouldn't have come anywhere now exactly so.
But the invite's nice. Sometimes Iwas going to say, you this
(02:55):
a person that still wants an inviteeven though you know it's going to be
a no no. I do Ido too. We were just talking about
this now, so this is completelyirrelevant to most people. He's had a
mark. Sorry. So we havethese teams meetings every Monday, right,
this is separate from the Mark meeting. Okay, we have teams meetings every
Monday. Now. We obviously alwaysinvite the people who work remote. The
(03:15):
thing is, even when we havein person meetings, we still invite the
people that work remote, just toinclude them. And sometimes they're like,
why do you invite us to this? You know, I feel like I
just want to be invited. Iwant to know when the meetings are happening.
I want to know when the eventsare happening. So I'm just trying
to be nice. Yes, I'mthe same way, like I would rather
be invited even if I can't comeanyway. Right, does it just make
(03:36):
you feel included? Yeah, ofcourse, I feel like that's my bigges
thing. I just want to beincluded. We'll always include you, John,
I just know you won't come.I like to set the expectations low,
so then it's just up from there. I like to suck. I
don't trust any of the words comingon. I'm not this is to be
fun. Well, I do wantto talk about the Grammys, so we'll
do that a little bit later, but first let's get into the new music
(03:57):
that came out this week. Allright, So plugging in this week surprised
me, Guys, not gonna lie, because I was looking at all the
artists coming out with music and Igot really excited. I thought this was
going to be like a huge releasedate, and it was, but I
think there were less songs that actuallyexcited me. I agree. There's one
that I thought was coming out onFriday, but it's actually next week,
this week end of this week,so our boy Noah. I mean,
(04:21):
I'm excited about No. One.Yeah, me too. But it was
by a singer called Dylan Okay,so good. She wrote it inspired by
Taylor Swift. But we'll talk aboutthat next week. Wow, what a
tease A tease for next week?Did Yeah? I love that? Okay,
so I do. Uh. Idid have a few songs this week
that that did catch my attention, and I'm only gonna run down four of
(04:41):
them. The first one was four, Yeah is that a lot? Only
four? We hit six on yourlist? But also yeah, I cut
down, I did some treaming.I'm really only trying to give you the
premium content here, right, Sowe're gonna do them in I mean,
no particular order. But first Iwanted to talk about Change by Nora Jone,
Remy Wolfs Day Black the way Witchis Black, butter Dude Blacks.
(05:12):
I absolutely love Nora Jones. Sheis a legend in jazz music. And
the reason I'm bringing this song upis first of all, just because it's
a gorgeous piece of music, butmainly just because I think I really love
what Nora Jones is doing in music. So she is this jazz legend,
But lately in music, she's beendoing so much music with newer artists that
(05:32):
are kind of in that scene, which I think is just so important.
When you become a legend in acertain it doesn't even have to be just
music in any category of life. When you become so knowledgeable and one of
the legends in your field, likeI think it's your job to bring the
new people up, and I thinkshe's doing that. I think we've talked
about Leave, who's kind of thisnew age gen z jazz artist, who's
kind of keeping jazz alive for ayounger generation. Is she the one that
(05:55):
just played at the Grammys last nightwith Billy Joel. Yes, she's she's
like bringing up this new generation ofjazz music essentially, and Nora Jones did
some Christmas tracks with her. Theywent back and forth on the piano and
it was absolutely amazing. Remy Wolfis another artist that's in that younger generation
that's like kind of got this jazzspin on music a little bit. So
(06:17):
I think the fact that Nora Jonesis stepping out and helping lift these younger
artists up, it excites me aboutmusic because that's what you should be doing,
bringing people up. When I'm anold man. Someday, I hope
I'm bringing somebody up in radio.Yeah, And I mean I think too,
it's cool to hear the two togetherwith each other. Yeah, I
completely agree. And Norah Jones justcome on this voice alone, dude,
(06:40):
Like, I don't know it,Just where's Remy in that She's I don't
have her in this clip, butit starts with Nora Jones because it's Nora
Jones song, and then later onRemy Wolf comes in and their voices compliment
each other so well. That electricpiano is just so classic to Nora Jones
because she's like very into piano. So anyways, loved that as a first
released Here next, I think I'vetalked about this artist before. It's a
(07:02):
song called beach Baby, and thisartist that goes by love Love Love What
Marley in the corner raising your hand, This is bonaver This is a cover
is its beach Baby is off ofBonavert's album that has blood Bank and all
(07:26):
of those other songs on it.I'm honestly shocked. I didn't know that,
Like I saw that on your listand a part of me like kind
of had a feeling it might havebeen a cover, but I didn't listen
to it because I wanted to besurprised here and here I am surprised.
It's a cover by Bonaverir. Thatis kind of cool. What's interesting to
me about this pick though, SoLove Love Love is honestly kind of like
an underrated, low key artist.Right. He's out of Brisbane, Australia,
(07:49):
and I found him through some randomplaylist. I was like deep dive
searching on and his older music remindedme so much of his older music music
that came out the end of lastyear. Like literally it's a couple of
months old, but it's music thatreminded me of Laney and Love and this
indie kind of sound. You keepchanging up your mind in love with it.
(08:13):
Then over the winter break, hemakes a post on Instagram and he's
kind of telling us that new musicis coming in this year, and he
was essentially saying that like he hasbeen experimenting with this new sound that's sonically
very different than anything he's had before. Now, I think at first,
when you find an artist that hasa sound that you like, that kind
of worries you, you know whatI mean, because you're like, oh,
(08:35):
I found you for a sound thatI love, and now you're gonna
experiment with something different. I'm curiousas to what that's going to be.
But then I had this like revelationwhen I heard this song because I loved
the vibe of itn' there's not evenmuch to it. It's just for some
reason, something in that sound ismagic and it captures me. And then
I started realizing that when an artistcan completely change sounds and you're in love
(08:56):
with the old sound and then youtend to genuinely love the new sound,
I think it builds a relationship withthe artist. That was deeper than it
was in the first place. Sure, because I feel like you guys share
that idea of what you look forin music, Like it's now something even
deeper, you know what I mean, Like, even if it's not the
same sound, there's something in thatnew sound that still gravitates towards you.
(09:18):
And if you guys share that incommon, I now have a deeper relationship
with this artist because there's two differentsounds and we found what we love in
both of them, and I feellike more connected to the artist in that
way. So I felt like thatwas so cool. That's why I brought
this one up. The song isit's great, but I feel like I
loved that even though he changed hissound, I was still into it and
it made me like him more asan artist, even though he's this kind
(09:39):
of underrated artist right now, youknow what I mean. But it just
brought me closer to him, andI thought that was so cool. And
now that you say that, Idefinitely hear the Bonnie Ers. Yeah,
yeah, I'm gonna listen to thisalbum on the way home. You really
should. It's so good. Butalso, Lana del Rey just said that
her new album is going to becountry. Yeah, so that's interesting.
(10:00):
I'm really curious to hear her newalbum, yeah, because it's gonna sound
I'm not a huge fan of hersound right the same, but so if
I mean, if she does countryon me, right, it's so interesting,
like she's gonna like she already hasa huge fan base, so now
that she goes country, she's goingto pick up that audience now. And
I also feel like I hear countryin her style something, can I agree?
(10:24):
I agree? It doesn't feel likea huge shift to me, and
I think that's why I think it'sgonna work. I'll probably put her on
the line up next year for astage coach. Oh yeah, it's insane
that this is a country album andnow she's still at Coachella and a week
later as the stage coach lineup, you know, right, But I know
her new album doesn't come out ntill later this year, So I think
that makes sense right exactly to thatpoint though, Kayla, Like, if
you like Linna del Ray, areyou gonna like country Linda del Ray even
(10:46):
if you don't like country, right, Like, that's what excites me and
I just had to share that thought. It's exciting. I know I'll be
I'll be intrigued to hear your thoughtson her, for sure. My third
pick here is I think one thatwe share here. This was like if
Marley and I collabed on a songDell Water Gap and Holly Humberstone, cigarettes
(11:07):
and wine. I love this song. Okay, I like this song too,
and it reminds me of Jone alittle bit. Yeah, I kind
of get back, like I loveit. It's just so fun and up
they and just like an acoustic guitar. Yeah, it's good. I love
(11:30):
that you said that. That waslike if we were to collab. I
truly brought Dell Water Gap to you, guys what you did, and then
you brought Holly d Us like amonth or two exactly. So wow,
what I feel like this is youand I like doing a handshake. Yeah,
handshake colap. You know, likeI'm obviously in it for Holly Humberstone,
you're in it for Dellwater Gap,and I just love that they came
together and this song is up.It's a bop, dude, It's a
bop. It's an absolute bob. It's perfect driving music. I'm like jumping
(11:54):
up and down to it. It'sgot that indie vibe and not like guitar
in the back too. It's soit's such a vibe. What's interesting to
me though, is and this iskind of separate from the music, but
I do think both of them arekind of in this indie lane. And
I still feel like a lot ofindie songs. This is such a random
point that I thought about, Buta lot of random indie songs still talk
about cigarettes like it's a cool thing. But who smokes cigarettes anymore? I
(12:20):
mean a lot of people drawn dothey really? Yeah? I don't know
something. Yes, I didn't realizehow many people actually smoked cigarettes until I
went to college and saw everyone outsideof the dorm smoking because you're not allowed
to do really. I was blownaway. And where'd you go to school
in Boston? Boston? Yeah,I was blown away. I was like,
eh, like you're smoking here?I am like eighteen year old Mikaela
(12:43):
Ke. Yeah, not realizing thereal world like people smoke. Like my
mom, she was a smoker. My whole family was that they quit when
my grandfather got cancer, right, and so I just it was just frown
upon for kids to smoke. Sowhen I went to college, I was
like, when did you start highschool? That's wild? Weird. It
was wild. That was like aculture shock to me. Do you think
I noticed it more than But Ifeel like now all I notice is people
(13:05):
vaping. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think it's yeah exactly. I
think that's the point vaping and winestop stopping. Like I think the appeal
of cigarettes is it's still got thatedgy kind of totally thing to it.
But I really feel and maybe we'rejust not surrounded by that, but I
(13:26):
don't notice people smoking cigarettes much like. I know it's still there obviously,
I know it's out there, butI don't know. I don't yeah as
much either, but I did, except in Vegas and casinos, you know
like that, but it's the oldergeneration. Yeah, casinos. And that's
what's so interesting is Dell water Gapthey didn't have vapes, right, So
(13:46):
that's exactly. But like even thenewer indie artists like Dell Water Gap,
Holly Humberstone still making songs about cigarettesand wine. I don't know any twenty
three, twenty four to twenty fiveyear old smoking cigarettes, right, I
agree. No, I agree withthat, But again to your point,
I think it's because it's got thequote like got that cool edgy, Yes
exactly, So I wonder how longthat lasts, you know, It's just
(14:07):
like one of those random intrusive thoughtsthat hit me with the song. I
don't know how long that lasts. And my number one song this week comes
from the legend dude Usher the boyhimself. It's his newest single from his
album that's coming out next week. This one's called Ruin Everybody. I cannot
(14:41):
get enough of this song. No, it's a vibe. I heard it
and I was like, yep, that's addicted to this song. So it's
like one of those bitter breakup songs. But he's like talking about the damage
that that someone can do to you, like the damage that doesn't just stop
in that relationship, and it's it'swhat you carry on, Yeah after somebody
that line that was ruined me foreverybody? You you ruined me for everybody?
(15:05):
Damn what what? And I don'tknow. I think about this so
much too, especially for I knowmaybe this is the same for women too,
but for guys. I hear aboutthis common theme. You see this
on TikTok a lot too, thatlike guys have that first heartbreak, right,
that first one that really like messesyou up, and I feel like
guys are never the same after that, Like it's so hard for guys to
(15:28):
and I've tried to obviously come backfrom this, like I'm pretty in touch
with my emotions compared to most guys, I think, but there are so
many guys out there that are soscared and like it came from one person
that probably ripped your heart out andthen it makes you want to be an
f boy after that, you knowwhat I mean. And I feel like
it's so hard to get over that. But I just this song, like
that's what it felt like to me, Like it tugs at that deep rooted
emotion that's in there, Like forso many people, there's one person that
(15:52):
just ruins you the most. Foreverybody else, they'll never be able to
get over those things. Like isthere one of those for you? Mikaela.
When I was like in middle schoolreally well because we were he was
like one of my first crushes.Yeah, and like my first boyfriend,
like ten years old. Yeah, but it like doesn't really count. You
say, no, it doesn't reallycount, but I do like remember it,
like yeah, the other ones eh, yeah, but no I've never
(16:15):
really had my heart broken. MaybeI've broken heart, but I haven't heartbreak
a heartbreaker over there. But like, so, if you're talking to someone
new, do you ever get flashbacksof like the first time, Yeah,
you got really really hurt, eventhough it was in eighth grade. Do
you still think about that sometimes?Oh? Yeah, he went after my
best friend? Please see, that'sthe stuff that sticks with you. Was
(16:40):
it just her name was Taylor? Are you still friends with her? No?
But not because of that? Okada, Taylor if you're listening, Just
kidding, God, Sorry, Taylor. I cannot wait for Usher to headline
the super Bowl next week, though, Like I'm excited. I'm so excited,
dude, I think he's gonna killit. I don't know. I
don't want to set my expectations toohigh, but I think it's going to
(17:04):
be a great show. It's gonnabe good too. I'm excited to see
who he like brings out, becausewe obviously know there's going to be somebody
guys like confessions. When I waslike in elementary school, you still like
scream all the lyrics like, ohyeah, for sure, Like I at
ten years old had a chick onthe side, who had one on the
way. I was singing every word, you know what I mean. I
(17:26):
don't know why I thought I feltthat so hard in fourth grade kid?
Fourth grade? Here goes, that'sit for me. There we go.
Okay, who wants it next me? Let's just toss this over to you.
Got it all right? Get catchpluging it? Here we go?
(17:48):
Nice? What's up dude? Okay? So this song is called Memories.
Dean Lewis released it last week, and I feel like all of his songs
just put me in my feels.Yeah, that's just how it is.
It's a vallid boy. Yeah.I just feel like this song though,
particularly that just came out, resonatedwith what I was feeling this week.
Thank you for all the memory.I wish that I could Dan can slow
(18:17):
a song like I could cry rightnow. Honestly, I think I just
I kind of like zoned out fromNo Me Too. It's forgot where I
was. He's one of those artistswhere like it's it's like, oh man,
another slow song, and then itjust hits for a second and you're
like, okay, he took methere, right, and like those silences
like the after he said like thanksfor the memories and the pause you think
about those memories. Like I waslike, oh, okay, I think
(18:41):
sometimes like the silence and music canalmost be more powerful than words that you
could feel right, you know whatI mean. I think that's why we
just zoned out, like whoa.I think we felt it. But this
song is basically like reflects on theimpact someone can have in your lives when
even after they're gone, whether they'reit's a relationship, they're still here with
us they've passed. And I've beenthinking about like my grandparents because it was
(19:03):
like a ten year like anniversary forthe last one of the last times I
had dinner with them, and soI was thinking about that this week and
then I heard this song and Iwas like, here are the water works,
because here they go, and it'sjust last week I wanted to just
pick up the phone so bad andcall like my nana and I couldn't.
Yeah, And so that's like relatableand I was like, WHOA, Like
this song hits, it's like heneeds to knock it off with all these
okay oh songs. The way hesings to you feel it in his voice.
(19:26):
I think he's got this. Hehas that song how do I say
goodbye? Oh? I know, like when his dad had cancer and so
he thought his dad was going topass unfortunately, and thank got his dad's
doing fine, but like there wasa moment he wasn't sure if his dad
was going to live, and sohe came out with that song, how
do I say goodbye to someone who'sbeen with me for my whole life?
No? And it's that line smacksyou in the face, smacks you in
(19:48):
the face. When I first heardthat two, I was like, whoa,
whoa. That's why I'm always socurious when we when we talked to
the guy, because he'll come infor an interview sometimes and this guy has
to tour the world on these songs, you know, and people were just
crying show after show after show andprobably telling like sad stories about how the
song has either helped him through asad time exactly how it reminds them of
(20:10):
a sad time, and he's justlike thanks for listening, Like, yeah,
at what point, like is itto kids? Like can you try
and relate to everybody? I'm surehe does try to. He seems like
the sweetest guy. Yeah, So, but I mean that's got to be
a challenge, right, Yeah, and he wrote this song, he said,
about his relationship with one of hisclosest friends. Yeah, so whether
or not, like they're not friendsanymore or whatever the situation is, Like,
(20:33):
it just can mean anything and it'sjust whoa. Yeah, that was
a deep cut for sure. Ialso felt like because obviously you can interpret
this song in so many different ways, like you said to your grandparents,
and you can also interpret it ina relationship. And it felt like the
complete opposite of ruin by usher usherslike you ruined me for everybody, And
Dean's like thanks for the memories.Yeah, Like no matter what, Yeah,
(20:56):
even if it ended in a badno, Like even my dad,
Like we don't have a good relationship, but there's times where I'm like,
I want to call my dad.Oh wait, I don't like them,
Yeah I do, Like I can't. It's like different things, because you're
always gonna have good memories no matterwhat, whether it ended on a bad
note or not. Think it's soimportant that even in relationships, even in
(21:17):
bad ones, like to remember thegood times you had together because I feel
like it makes it worth it.You're like, yeah, I went through
all the bad, but at leastI got some of those really good memories
and there was a meaning behind it. It was made you who you are
today, like you know, yeah, get picked due it for you that
is yeah. We like you said, it was kind of not that many
realists this week, but I hadan usher on the list too. Loved
(21:40):
that song. So yeah, that'swhat I have for this week. Taking
that up you passed over to Marley, well, yeah, she could just
plug that in just waiting on you. I got it, Okay, So
the only pick I had this weekwith cigarettes Wine by Holly humber Stone.
(22:08):
We'll go back to it. Ilove it so much. So anyway,
obviously we've already talked about it,but I take out the auction, okay,
all right, it is the dayafter the Grammys, and I do
want to get into that. Sooh that, and I want to know
if TikTok has felt different to yousince UMG took all their music off of
TikTok last week. So that's nexttick are out and we're back, so
(22:37):
back. So before we get tothe Grammys, I just kind of wanted
to get an update from you guysbecause Wednesday of last week was the day
that UMG Universal Music Group took allof their music off of TikTok. That
was obviously huge news. They hada deal going on, and then UMG
puts on this or puts out thisletter on Wednesday that says, hey,
our deal is supposed to expire today. Essentially, they're accusing TikTok of not
(23:02):
paying them, are their artists afair enough wage for the music that gets
on TikTok, and then not doingenough to essentially combat a lot of those
AI programs that are taking a lotof these songs playing the new AI version
and then the artist doesn't get thecredit for that. Oh wow, So
that was a huge part in it. TikTok basically says no, like you're
demanding too much, you're being sogreedy. We're a platform that essentially gives
your artists free promotion in marketing.I mean not always free, but in
(23:26):
some cases promotion in marketing. Soyou need us more. And it was
this massive standoff, and this wholetime, I'm thinking there's no way they
go through with this, no chance. Can you imagine all that music getting
pulled off TikTok. That's Ward Styles, Taylor Swift, Post Malone, Olivia,
Rodrigo, Bad Bunny, like literallyall the main people. You know,
they're the biggest music company in theworld. And then it actually happened.
(23:48):
I know, all of these videosthat are like showing up and there's
no sound. Yeah, Like Igot a notification the next morning that was
like, these videos of yours don'thave sound anymore. Yeah, you can't
search Arina Grande, Dustin Bieber orOlivia anymore on the sound step. Nothing
comes up. And that's wild, like even good for them to make for
making a stand, but they weknow that we were able to use that
music because they had paid rights forit. But now it's like whoa,
(24:11):
Like what are they to do?Right? And that's I think why I
wanted to get your take on,first of all, just how it feels
being on TikTok now that that's beenoff for almost a week now, Like
do you feel the difference not seeingthat music yet or no, I do
do? I mean I spent alot. I'm not on it as much
as Marley, I have to say, so she knows more than Yeah,
(24:33):
basically that's fine. I spend anungothly amount of time on that app unfortunately,
but I have noticed it because alot of the tiktoks that are coming
up on my four you page arekind of making light of the situation in
the sense where it's like, okay, well they've you know, for example,
Michael the guy who created the Bejeweleddance, Oh yeah, yeah,
(24:55):
he for Taylor Swift. He recreateda song of him singing the words as
he's doing the dance. He waslike, because the sound got removed,
you can still use this to like, you know, use and it's like
so precious to me. But anyway, so videos of that nature I've come
up on my on my for youpage, so I have noticed it.
(25:17):
Yeah, I don't make TikTok,so I don't know on that. Yeah,
so I haven't experienced what that's like, but I've been seeing people make
light of it. Yeah, Similarly, like I've seen a lot of those
videos, and I wonder, like, I don't think I've noticed it yet,
but I have noticed less music onmy TikTok because I think we probably
share a very similar feed. Sure, we're like, we discover a ton
(25:37):
of music on TikTok. Yeah, right, And I think that was kind
of what played it into my feelingson this is of course, you want
artists to be paid obviously, likethat's like the main thing. But we
can't deny how big of a platformTikTok is for discovering new music exactly.
Is it bad for Lvia Rodrigo,Taylor Swift, all these people? Yeah,
sure sure, but it's more badfor people like, for example,
(25:59):
Knox, artists that we both love. Yeah, absolutely found him on TikTok
Sneakers Like Sneakers was the really firstsong that made him take off. Even
artists like Noah Khan, like BensonBoone, Yes, huge artists now,
but have used TikTok to help skyrocketthat fame. What are they like that?
(26:21):
I don't know. That's the otherthing. All these artists that we
just listed off, we don't knowif they're I mean, I can't confirm
it den not where they're UMG artists. But to your point, the plant
is it makes careers and like thatmoney ends up coming back around at some
point. Like that gets factored intowhether or not your songs make the charts.
I'm sure like ticket sales. Nowhere's the question if a song is
(26:41):
made off of TikTok, for example, or blown up through TikTok and because
it's this huge success, should TikTokget a portion now? If they're going
to be that picky, I mean, in some ways you're on their app
and that's what they want anyway, right, And I wouldn't be surprised if
that was something that was worked intosome contract, if they ever came to
an agreement about it. And I'msure that's why TikTok wants to pay less,
(27:03):
because they're like, they're essentially likewho needs who more? You know,
they're boasting an edge hear and songback to each other like you need
me, I don't need you.I love that song so much. I
don't know. After a week,I was trying to figure out, like
who has more to lose here? And at first I thought TikTok did.
But now that I'm thinking about itnow I see these underground artists like it.
I'm starting to think the artists havemore to lose. I'm thinking it's
(27:25):
unfortunately, I think it's the artist. Like I again to the point that
we've already made like obviously we wantthese artists to get paid what they should
be getting paid for it. Butto Mikayla's point, they're very much going
like TikTok's absolutely going to come tosome kind of agreement at some point that
they're going to request some kind ofportion of it too, yeah, or
at least that's what I can seehappening. But I don't know, man,
(27:47):
because if you're TikTok, like what'sthe point of having them back on,
Like, you're not going to stopusing TikTok just because your artists aren't
there, And people aren't going tostop using TikTok either because the artists aren't
on there or the sounds aren't ontheir sight, and the artists still need
to promote their music somehow, whetherthat's trying trends now, I guess is
Noel con umg artist Yes, okay, because I saw him post something the
(28:07):
other day where he was like, well moving to Instagram, like moving to
Instagram stories or something like that, which is another point because similarly, like
when I was doing I was preppingfor my new Music Friday segment on the
radio show, and I was lookingup Dean Lewis and I was pulling some
clips of memories and like trying toget more info in the song, and
he brought all his videos to Instagram, and I thought, is Instagram going
(28:30):
to be more of a music appnow? Like, of course, right
now it doesn't really compare to TikTok, But yeah, is that going to
be a future trend. I don'tknow. I don't think it will be,
but I think it will. Ithink it's going to spark something in
UMG to be like, Okay, well, how can we come to an
agreement on this, because obviously artistsneed TikTok, just like TikTok need the
(28:51):
artists, And you know, Ithink there's they're gonna have to come to
some kind of agreement. I'm assuming, but yeah, but for night now,
it's a very weird place. Yeah, I'll be very interested to see
how all of that kind of playsout over the next few months. I
completely agree. Speaking of places wedid see music though, Grammys last night,
I do want to go over kindof a recap. Both of you
watched the whole thing. Sure didn'tall right, I fell asleep in the
last thirty minutes, but I feellike I got the most of it.
(29:15):
When I got a text for meyou at like eight fifteen, I was
like, fucked, he's way pasthis bedtime. Both of us were like,
Oh, I wonder if he actuallystayed up on purpose to watch the
Yeah, that was the only reasonI was up past my bedtime. So
I just kind of want to goover some of my notes from the Grammys
and just starting with Trevor Noah asthe host. I feel like he was
great. He was phenomenal of him. I really do. He nailed it.
(29:38):
I did. He showed what it'slike to be funny but also respectful,
to bring laugh but also bring love. Like he didn't really diss anybody,
but it was still so relevant.Yeah, I thought he did an
incredible job. He did. Ishe really is? Yeah? My favorite
joke of his was saying, ifyou go over your time on the speeches,
then Kelly Clarkson's going to cover oneof your songs, you won't be
(30:00):
able to post it anymore because she'sgoing to do a better job than you.
Oh my god. And like youhave to be on TikTok to know
that. I think you know, like, of course you can watch Kelly
Yoki, but the fact that everyoneon TikTok is like, oh and Kelly
Clarkson, Yeah, it's pretty good. That's so cute. I know she's
the best. I went to thetaping of hers, like the Kelly Clarkson
Show a couple of times, andshe always covers a song yeah, and
(30:21):
I love it, and I'm justlike, oh my god, is this
your song? Is this not theperson's She's incredible. I love her.
I think, Yeah, I've evenseen artists as soon as Kelly posts that,
they just go on TikTok and they'relike, well, that's not my
song anymore. So we had agood run because Kelly Clarkson just got pipes.
But anyways, he like tied inthe Alaska Airlines door falling off,
(30:41):
like I think he mentioned Taylor Swiftin a perfectly appropriate way, like it
wasn't too much but still brought itup. I just thought Trevor Noah did
incredible. Dua Liva was phenomenal openingthe show. Yeah, her performance was
crazy. We were sitting there,I think it was we were saying that.
We were like, oh my gosh, oh like the box or bars
or whatever. It was really cool. Miley cyrus one was that the first
(31:07):
Grammy of the night. I thinkit was, yeah, first dam and
then I thought like her performance wasincredible, Like she was saying in her
little monologue part before it kind ofthat she was just kind of doing it
for her and she was just havingfun. And I felt like her performance
just seemed fun, like all thead libbings she did. I didn't want
to leave you, but had to. I don't want to find but we
did. Started to cry. Andremember I was so cute. I just
(31:34):
got the chills for her, likethat was so I was very cute,
like and her child came out inthat moment. I just lost my first
tube, like so cute, likeshe was just having the best time.
Yeah. I loved that. Mileyis so cool, and it shocked me
that she hadn't won a Grammy untillast night. I was like, you
know, we were looking up likewait, there's no way. It was,
(31:56):
how strange. Wow. Yeah. And then this performance from Luke Combs
and Tracy Chapman Fast Car. Igot oh chills all over motion. It's
(32:17):
so good. The fact that TracyChapman doesn't really perform live anymore, she
hadn't done that in years. Tosee her out there, and I just
felt like Luke Combs did a greatjob of showcasing her. He was dressed
very well in nice suit I've neverseen him without a hat. I saw,
I saw Luke Comb's head for thefirst time, crazy, and he
(32:39):
just felt he was always looking ather, like giving her the spotlight.
And that was just an awesome performance. I like teared up. Yeah,
it was incredible. We were inon to Yeah. Then, of course
Taylor Swift announcing her album. Iwant to say thank you to the fans
by telling you a secret that I'vebeen keeping from you for the last two
(32:59):
years, which is that my brandnew album comes out April nineteenth. It's
it's called The Torture Poets Department.I'm gonna go and post the cover right
now backstage. Thank you, Ilove you. Did you hear that person
yell? Yes? After after shewas like, a secret I've been keeping.
(33:20):
Oh yeah, I mean I wonderif you listen honestly, I mean,
Mikayla can attest this. She literallysaw my jaw drop. I fully
thought as well as thought it wasgoing to be reputation. So I was
like on the edge of Mikayla's couch, like it's this is it? Like
this is a yeah, no,blown away? Blown It was the way
(33:43):
you teased it and to misguide everybodywith the black and white. She knew
her outfit that matched the reputation withthe chokers. Yes, she did that
just to even make it more ofa surprise. So all of the things
that I've been seeing, Wow,I can't wait to talk about this,
All the things that I've been seeingever since she'd dropped it or like announced
it, I guess, you know, everyone started to notice that all of
(34:05):
her like close circles and artist friends, we're changing their icons on Instagram to
black and white, which again leadingup to reputation. Everyone is now speculating
that this is going to be aclab album, right because she signed off
on her Instagram you know this thesecond page that's not the cover photo,
but the you know yeah letter. It's signed off as the chairman of the
(34:29):
Tortured you know, Poets Department orwhatever. And I'm hearing that her ex
boyfriend Joe Alwin had this group chatdid you see this? And it was
called the Tortured Men's Club. Ithink I'm so sick of her, honestly,
and so we're thinking that this isgoing to tie into that or is
what I'm hearing that is crazy?Oh my god, this is all secondhand
for me because I'm obviously not onas much Taylor TikTok. But but yeah,
(34:50):
no, that's what you know, people are now like, oh my
god, this new group chat, like this group chat that apparently this interview
was what in like two thousand andyeah it was twenty two or something.
Yeah, yeah, years back.So that's the group chat. And then
between the icons of everyone changing onInstagram and people thinking that like she's the
chairman of this you know, departmentand all of these people like it's going
to be a collab album. WhatI kept thinking of was on our first
(35:13):
episode, I asked everyone what theywere most excited about this year, and
I was like, now that Taylorhas released her new album, like,
I'm excited to see who steps upto the spotlight this year in music.
Sure, she has a brand newalbum coming out in April, Like what,
oh my god, it's back again. You know, I can't I
can't wait for it because I havea feeling it might be. I'm trying
to decide whether I think it's goingto be like a folklore ever more two
(35:37):
point zero type situation. Whe's thesound? Yeah? Is it going to
be a collab album where it's youknow, every artist or every track has
an artist on it. I don'tknow. My question is she has more
Aras tour dates this year, somein America later on, and I think
October, Sure, do you changethe arastour now? Because these songs are
going to be out there, goingto be some of the biggest songs in
the world since April, she's notgoing to perform new songs at the air
(36:00):
tour. I think what she'll dois she'll incorporate it in her like surprise
song set Okay, yeah, whatI mean. I don't think she'll add
it necessarily to the tour because it'salready or the set list because it's already
like three and a half hours long, or sing but I think she'll do
it in like the surprise song portion. Well, she'll start incorporating those.
Yeah, I could see that.I could see that. I'm interested.
(36:22):
All right, Well, well,I'm sure I have more to chat about
that over time. A big releasedrop this coming week finally that No Account
