(00:02):
How does this different things? AndI'm gonna be hung over, no idea?
What is the line? Though? The most popular one, it's that
it's not exactly No, that isanother one. What's up? I'm John,
I'm Marley, and I'm Mikayla, and you're listening to on the Playlist
(00:25):
and I heard Radio New Music podcast. So we have a very important business
matter to get to here first.Hey, yeah, welcome to on the
Playlist. My name is John,Michayla's here and hell but do we immediately
have to go to this breaking news? Marley has a crush on she has
(00:47):
a workplace. She definitely does. She's read I'm literally you guys are spreading
rumors. No, but I dohave a story about a friend of ours
who actually admitted to her coworker crushyesterday. Friend of ours Marley texts the
(01:07):
group chat this morning and she said, I want to talk about work crushes
on the pod. It's a badtime we start sharing our work crushes on
the pod. No, I'm socurious, this is what your thought process
is on this. Because so togive some backstory, one of our friends
last night we were having like agoing away party for them, and right
before everyone left, she was like, I have an announcement to make.
(01:30):
But this is why I wanted youto tell me, because you're not going
to say the name on the pod. I'm not, but I'll tell you
later. You need to text meright after you Is it almost better you
don't know, because now you getto like picture different people in the building.
Yeah, you know, I needto know. I've been thinking about
it all morning, and now Ineed to know on crush. This is
very inside circle, but I dothink workplace crushes are a pretty common thing.
(01:52):
Yeah. So she makes this announcementthat she's had a crush on said
person, who is literally standing rightnext to her. Wait, hold on,
So she like made a cheer. She like clink, clank, clink.
Everybody pay attention. I mean everyonehad kind of gone, like there
was only like maybe like six ofus left, okay, and there was
like twenty something, And so shejust makes this announcement, not that they're
(02:14):
dating. No, did this guyeven know the announcement was coming. No,
So he was blind and sized.I think it just came out of
nowhere. She was like, Ihave an announcement to make, looks right
at him and goes I've had acrush on you, and I was like,
oh my gosh, that is wowincredible. I was like my jaws
(02:34):
on the floor truly, and goodfor her, dude, you know,
shoot your shot, like people needto start shooting the well. That sure.
That was the goal of the year, was to be more outgoing.
Yeah, that takes take charge. So anyway, that's why I brought up
coworker crushes today. So the guy'sface in this moment, what does it
look like? I don't know ifhe like looked you stunned. I think
(02:54):
he kind of like he had kindof known yeah, or had said that
he had kind of an idea. But will texting right now who it is?
I don't I can't do that?Which was was it like awkward for
the rest of the night, Likehow were was the end of the night?
And it was the vibes were fineand then done they did not just
(03:15):
curious dude, that's like I gotto see how the story ends. You
can't leave me on a cliffhang no, but that was it and then everyone
went home. That truly, thatwas it. She shot her shot and
that was and then now she's leaving, so she won't oh for the person.
I'm I'm surprised it to keep thatlong toga. She was my well,
(03:38):
if she's chairs me because she's literallymoving north, like okay, down
north of Los Angeles. Like finally, like, now let me say this
thought. I'm leaving this job.So yeah, I had an idea,
but I need to know who theguy was allowed it? Yeah, wait,
good looking guys, I get it. Say anything, you know,
(04:01):
I mean he did. He waslike, oh, like you know,
I don't know what now. Alsothe name, oh I know, so
it was. It was really Ilove him. It was really shocking,
Like we were all like I willsay this on the floor, just singing
by your mouth who the guy was. That is the third time this has
(04:23):
happened with co workers in this buildingto him with him, with him.
Two other times co workers have confessedtheir feelings for this guy. He is
a hot commodity in this hot commodity, this duy. Who do I know?
The other people he's like good looking? You know at least one of
them? Yes for him? Namesare similar, so sweet, we're going
(04:47):
too much. Sorry, oh ohokay, we just got to know every
optic anyway you're talking about is gettinghot in here. We're just like everyone's
business out on the table here.So let's talk about new music out this
week. Let's plug in our oxand just get started because I'm hot right
(05:12):
now. Take the sweater off.I'm actually gonna do. How come everyone
in this buildings wearing a sweater today? If you noticed that except for Marley,
sorry you're not invited, but everyoneelse wearing sweaters. Love people,
it's been cold in la Oh Iam what is that song? Sweater weeather?
I don't know. He's my neighbor. Oh, you're right, Okay,
(05:34):
no though, all right, Sowe have our very first artist interview
that we're going to tack on tothe end of this episode. We sat
down with Knox last week. Butfirst let's talk about this week's new music
and first song out today. Let'slet's start with the big releases. Got
to go to our girl. ArianaGrande just came out with a brand new
album, Eternal Sunshine. This isthe next single she's pushing off it called
(05:58):
we Can't Be Friends? Was thisalbum what you were expecting? I actually,
like I heard that it was goingto be a concept album. Yeah,
(06:21):
and I maybe I don't know,like what a concept album is I
didn't really get that from this.Yeah. For example, like the first
concept album that comes to mind withto me was Donna FM from the Weekend.
I don't know if you ever listenedto that one, but I remember
when it first came out, itwas like, and I'm not gonna do
it full justice yere, but it'sessentially like him crossing over into that world
(06:43):
between like right when you die. What's it called purgatory? Sure, between
heaven and hell, And so thatwhole experience of the album was like you
in purgatory going through it. Okay, I mean that's kind of sorry.
It just weirdly, Jim Carrey narratesone of those songs and Eternal Sunshine No
it's a move, yeah, butwith Jim Carrey in it. Yes,
his album is inspired by this JimCarrey movie and Jim Carrey narrates a song
(07:06):
on Don FM for the Weekend.Whoa, oh wow, wow, I
just randomly made that connection. Youwere falling off your chair almost got shocked.
Yeah, I just got bra works. Like when an idea comes,
I'm like, oh wait a minute, Well, that that's kind of what
I obviously assumed a concept album wasso when I was listening to it,
I was trying to think of itas like start to finish concept album,
(07:27):
but maybe it just didn't click forme. I don't know. Yeah,
I listened to it a little waythrough too, and I don't think I've
gotten that yet. And granted thisis the first day it's out, so
maybe we'll make some of those connectionslater on. But to your point,
like I didn't, I didn't knowwhat to expect with this one, because
I do know it's based off thatmovie Eternal Sunshine to the Spotless Mind with
Jim Carrey, which is one ofmy favorite romance movies. I wouldn't say
it's a romp com. It's moreof like a romantic drama. Have you
(07:48):
seen that movie. I haven't seenit in a long time. Yeah,
I've never even heard of that movie. I'm gonna be so honest, if
you watch it, you might know. I'm also not like, let's remember
here, I'm not right that moviewatching them all, So there's you know,
movies, I've probably never see thebasic Rundown Jim Carrey, and I'm
sure the actress is famous, butyep, she's pretty huge. Titanic,
(08:13):
so Kate winslet Jim Carrey fall inlove. They have this relationship that's so
passionate, right, and it endsup not working out. It gets really
ugly and they end terribly. Andso there's this company that will go back
in your mind and wipe memory ifyou want it to. So they go
and they wipe each other's memory sothey don't have to remember the heartbreak and
the bad times. Oh interesting,And then after their memories wiped, they
(08:37):
meet each other again, and sothey start to fall in love. And
then they both find out that theygot each other's memory wiped, and so
now they're posed with the question. They know they don't work out, but
right now they're starting to fall andso they have this question of do we
continue with this relationship knowing damn wellit's going to fail someday, or do
we just count our losses here becauseit must have been so bad and I
don't want to go through that again. Okay, that adds so much more
(09:00):
clarity now. It's and her musicvideo for this song is that yeah,
is her going in and getting hermemory wiped and actually maybe be so sad
watching it because like the box ofstuff that like you know they're getting rid
of that she brought into this youknow way relationship that so much more painext
to the album, And it's alsoabout her life too, because of her
boy you divorce. I mean,it's basically like a divorce album. We
(09:22):
talk about it. She has thisline in the intro it's literally called intro,
and the line says, how canI tell if I'm in the right
relationship? Aren't you supposed to justknow that shit? I cannot tell if
I'm in the right relationship? Aren'tyou really supposed to know that shit?
They let in your bones and knowthat shit? And I thought that sent
you an interesting line, because ofcourse everyone thinks that every relationship is your
(09:46):
last. Otherwise why would you bein it for the most part right unless
you're causually dating? But how manytimes are you wrong about relationships? And
like, aren't you just supposed toknow? They say? When you know,
you know? But so many peopleare wrong all the time. You
think you know, But how doyou know if this time the real time
you know? So I think thiswhole album is like her trying to figure
that answer out. Well. Idid notice that throughout her like track list,
(10:09):
it would go from you know, really sad too, I'm over it,
And then also like wait, maybeI'm not, but like so,
I mean, I guess in thesense of now knowing that it's based off
of that movie, yeah, andthen thinking back to like the concept piece
of it, I guess it doesmake more sense. It's like my favorite
thought to think about too, becauseI just think about the times were like
I wanted to die, I washurting so bad. But like, would
(10:31):
I go back and change it?I don't think I ever would, because
sometimes I think it's better to goin and feel things than to not feel
anything at all. Sure, butman, so I also thought that with
this album, yes, and itkind of fell out a place to me
very it felt like, here, this is my song for radio. The
rest of my album's not going tobe that, right, which was interesting.
(10:54):
I thought it was more mellow andit felt like she was more trying
to say things rather than just putout pop bangers. You know. Yeah,
it's interesting. There was one partof the song too, because I
was already like watching the video andjust listening to the song was like makes
it makes you think. So there'sa line that says me and my truth
we sit in silence. And there'sa clip that I pulled because this is
so powerful me and much too wesit in silence, m Like, why
(11:22):
no, I love that? Ilove that like that. Yeah, Like
when I brought up on my Mindby Alexander twenty three, like he did
the same kind of thing. Itwas like, let me give you some
space and then it's like, youknow, ten seconds of nothing, yeah,
and it's is that enough space?Think? Are we good? I
love stuff like that because there's onlyso much you can do with audio,
(11:43):
you know, So like when you'reable to like kind of emphasize the point
you're trying to make in your lyricswith the music as well. I just
like it hits harder. Yeah. And the truth of like you know,
her relationship not working out and ifyou know, her memory was wiped,
her truth sits in silence because shetruly does not know what it is.
And it's also and it's so muffled, that muffled sound in the background,
(12:03):
as if you're like covering your ears, almost like in a crowded deafening.
It's actually like deafening. That's crazy. Yeah, I really love this song.
I have to say. I knowI gotta sit with the album more
to like let it sing a greatso listen to a few, but this
one I kept going back to becauseI was like, Wow, it's really
good. I know it's the oneshe's pushing, but it was the one
I liked the most so far,at least off my first listen. I
agree. So moving on another albumthat I loved. Guys, truly,
(12:26):
I am a Bleachers fan. Nowwe have to go see them one they're
in LA. We have to like. I like Ariana Grande, Don't get
me wrong, I like her music, but like Bleachers. I'm signing up
for the pre sale code. I'mthere, Like, I'm so into this
new album, self titled Bleachers. There is so much in this album that
feels so dreamy and classic and romantic. It almost feels like I'm watching an
(12:50):
old movie. And we've talked aboutlike the influence of the saxophone on this
album. Yeah, So the veryfirst song is called I Am Right on
Time, and it takes a whileto slowly build with the drums and the
guitar kind of coming in. Itgave me almost you two vibes as it's
like warming you into this album. We were just kidding like do you kind
(13:16):
of hear whether without you? It'sjust a slow build up of a song,
and it just gave me that withor without you vibe. And then
the second track of the album bringsin the saxophone and it just takes you
to this throwback song with modern girllike I feel like we're in a diner
(13:41):
yea, kicking our legs just likeold ties. It just feels so wholesome
to me, and it's so classicand it feels so I don't know if
this is the right way to phraseit, but they feel so together,
like they're recording it together in aroom rather than like in pieces. I
completely know what you mean. Likeit's like if you walked into a recording
studio and it's like, you haveyou know so and so in the back
(14:03):
doing drums and this person over hereplaying the saxophone, and then you have
you know, Jack Antonov over heresaying like it feels like they're just recording
like what they would sound live.It feels like a live recording. I'm
with you one hundred percent, likeit doesn't sound like a studio recording.
And even through it, and again, this is one of those albums that
is going to take some time tosit through so and his lyrics. Jack
antonof like he is very intricate withsome of these lyrics. I'm gonna have
(14:26):
to sit with them to really understandwhat they mean. So I'm kind of
just going off the album sonically rightnow, at least for the most part.
But even some of the slower songsjust feel like they could break out
at any time in a party.Like this song is called call Me After
(14:48):
Midnight, and he's talking about howyou only call after midnight, right,
So it's kind of a breakup song, but he's still got a little vibe
to it. The drum kit kicksin, he still got some sacks in
there, and the whole album justfelt so unique to me. So I
also really liked Self Respect, Ithink, and I think they played that
(15:09):
Midnight one at the album release, did they sure? I know they played
Hey Joe at the album I LoveJoe, Yeah, John Joe. I
know. I was like listening toit this morning and I was like,
I am in love with this album. Where's bleacher's been my whole life?
I don't know, they've been herearound, They've been missing in my life.
I'm gonna say with that one morethis weekend, just to fully appreciate
(15:31):
it. But that new bleacher's albuma big hit for me. All right,
A couple more here. I wantto hit this new song from Lave,
who we've talked about before, who'skind of a jazz inspired pop artist.
So she has that classical feel toher singing, and her new one
is called Goddess. She is talkingabout it's kind of gnarly. She's these
lyrics I want you to listen to. She's talking about how it's different when
(15:54):
you're dating someone who's let's say amusician in her case. You expect this
on stage persona of them in therelationship, but at the end of the
day, like they're just a person. You took a start oo coop with
me study, you mustfeld so deceivedup. Oh, neither you thought you
(16:29):
love, but you took a startof bed woke up with me instead.
You must have felt so deceived whenyou made up a version of me that
you thought you'd love. Oof.Oh ouch. I just feels like shots
fired. Yeah, and it's probablytrue, Like you know, everyone imagines
what it would be like to datea pop star. I guess like if
(16:51):
you're dating Ariana Grande and then there'sgot to be a point where the music's
off and you're just hanging out withthem as a person Like it's an impossible
persona to live up to. AndI feel like, I wonder if you
get lost in that when you're inthat bubble, you know. It Just
it really got me thinking about it. Anyway. My last one today was
a song from Mount Joy and it'scalled Highway Queens Folk Granola kind of vibe
(17:32):
mandolin that I heard the instrument thatI'm thinking of what, I don't know,
you could be right, I'm gonnasay maybe confidently, I don't know.
But he was saying that this songis one of those guys. Oh
kind of sounds like it. Yeah, Like I don't know one hundred percent,
but by looking at that instrument soundsvery much sounds like this. I
(17:55):
mean, it's used on folk songs, so I wouldn't be surprised. Tell
me either. But he said thisone is for the Granola guys and girlies,
which is having a moment right now. They are, And he said
it's about seeing yourself in someone youlove and knowing that you could be there
for them, And it just soundslike one of those wholesome songs, like
if you're on a road trip withsomebody and you're just like looking across that
you're passinger seat. I was like, dank, this is that song?
(18:15):
You know, very no convibes.Anyway, that's it for me. I'm
taking this out all right. Ithink we're going to go to Mikaela.
Are you answering emails? Are youanswering emails? No? I am not
a text? Well ready or not? Here comes? What is it then?
(18:36):
And this sone's actually a little differentthan what we've done before, because
have you guys heard of the newmovie that's coming out called The Idea of
You, which is yeah, whichis based off supposedly based off a Harry
Styles fan fiction became a book, and it's basically about this mom who takes
her daughter to an August Moon concertaka One Direction, and they go to
a meet and greet and basically thelead singer Harry's but his name is Hayes
(19:00):
and this okay, fall in loveand have a secret relationship. And I
read their book and it is sogood. But now it's a movie.
He is commonly like known as beingfan fiction too. Yeah, yeah,
absolutely wow. So Anne Hathaway playsthe mom and then Nicholas Gallistine gallas Zine
Galasine I say his last name, but he was in Purple Hearts and some
(19:21):
other movies. But he's actually asinger, Like he can actually sing.
He's posted on social media covering likeTaylor Swift Olivia Rodrigo. But they actually
released a song from this movie andit's him singing and it's so good and
so now it makes me think, like is he going to have a career
after this in music? Like ishe going to try to pursue it?
And really plays guitar, he reallysings, and this song is so catchy
(19:42):
and good. I don't know ifthat's a point. Jumped the gun and
I'm so sorry you put your handup. I didn't know. I said
I would point to you. Yourhand went up. It felt like a
point, like it was really closeto being a point. It was like
one finger from being a point.Yeah, it's fine, but you can
play it. So this song iscalled Dance Before We Walked. Isn't that
(20:15):
good? It's giving like a walkto the moon. That's what I was
gonna say, Yes, doesn't it? So? Is this supposed to be
a hairy style sound or not necessarily. I don't think necessarily. I think
just you know kind of the characteris based on if you watch the trailer,
Like there are a lot of similaritiesbetween the two, like black,
skinny jeans, the sweet hair.Oh actually buzzed his hair, so right,
(20:41):
this is true. But yeah,I don't know. I really liked
that song and I'm so excited forthis movie and I'm when does it come
out. It comes out in May. I'll have to see it. Yeah,
you'll have to see it. Johnjust made me laugh. That's sick
fiction. Yeah. There are alittle differences between the trailer and the book
(21:04):
though, because in the movie trailerthey meet at Coachella. She's like,
happens stand up in his trailer forsome reason. Oh, that sounds like
a way better. It's more realisticand a meet and green now than backstage
at Coachella where you just happen toend up in is trailer? What security
you let you through? I feellike that's more common than a meet and
greet because I feel like a meetand greet it's so he take your picture
(21:26):
and say hi to the artist andthen move on. You have security be
like yo, go give that girlmy number. Yeah, where's Coachella?
Like, there's no guarantee you're goingto meet an artist, but if you're
just wandering around backstage, have abackstage passed John mom taking her daughter to
see this popular band, know somebodywho knows somebody? I will find out
(21:48):
what we watch the movie. There'ssome friends I have that I see with
like artists passes Coachella and I'm like, how did you? But reading the
book, I really did picture awoman that looks like Inn Hathaway, so
I think the casting was effect interesting. Okay, taking this out from you.
If you're done, I'm what's up, dudees? What's up? Dude?
(22:11):
Hey, dude, I missed you. Okay, you guys. So
before I jump into my song,I have to ask if this happens to
you guys, because it's been happeningto me a lot recently. These New
Music Friday mishaps. They have tostop, they have to stop. Okay,
de fine, New Music Friday.I think you're going. Okay,
(22:32):
So this has happened before to anartist that I really enjoy. His name
is Samcperson. Where on my NewMusic Friday? On my New Music Friday?
There So this happened, Like Isaid, this happened a while ago
where I saw a different artist thougha different artist featuring Sam McPherson, and
I was like, yes, yes, yes, it's been happening with Joan
(22:56):
a lot and even no Rome.I think maybe I'm maybe I'm whatever,
It doesn't matter. Sam McPherson ithappened to him like last year at some
point and I was like hello, and I think he addressed it on Instagram
like this is not my song.I don't know who this person is,
Like, I don't know what thisis. Right. So I was,
you know, scrolling through new musicFriday yesterday as I do, and it
happened again, but this time itwas Sam McPherson and Ben Kessler, who
(23:19):
are two artists that I really like, and they're on this, you know,
this guy's song and I was likeokay, like I'm gonna listen to
it. Wow, what a duo. This is crazy. And it's truly
just a minute and a half longof like just elevator music. Basically I
mean no disrespect to I mean theactual artist, but like it's just it's
(23:40):
not the type of music from SamMcPherson or these other artists that are labeled
as being a part of the song, so you're not expecting it and I
will. Yeah, it's so interesting, so bizarre, and so I was
like, I don't know what's goingon, and it happened again. This
guy named William g. T featuresAshley Kutcher and like a few others,
and Ashley Kutcher like a newer artistthat I've been into, and so I
(24:02):
was like, oh, great, listen to it. This is she related
to Ashton Kutcher. I don't know, Okay. I think she might have
been like on the Voice or likeone of those shows like America, and
I don't know. I haven't reallydone too much like research research on it.
But this guy has three monthly listenersthree and I was like why why,
(24:23):
Like why is this happening? Thisis so is such a tease.
I'm like, wait, all ofthese new artists are doing fee like how
cool? Yeah, elevator music, because you never know, there are so
many genre blends these days that younever know an artist I actually might be
down to do that kind of stuff. Absolutely. I will listen to the
whole song thinking that they're still goingto come in. Yeah, the whole
thing. Yes, and this happensto Joan and artists that we have a
(24:44):
lot, I will see them, and now if I see them in my
release radar, I'm more likely tothink that it's not their real song,
which and that it is. It'sso frustrating because I like obviously want to
listen to those artists and I feellike I'm being punked, that punked.
But now this guy has four monthlylisteners because apparently it's me. Yeah,
I'm the fourth one. I wasprobably other two because I listened to that
(25:04):
song this morning and I'm a manand thirty seconds in, I'm like when
Sam mcferston coming in? Is thishappening? And same with Joe. They're
like a pop group and it's alwayslike heavy hip hop tracks with like trapping
it And does that happen to youMcKayla. That could never happened to me
before because Johan is like one ofyour like more you know, yeah,
but I mean I guess I justknow kind of when they have music coming
out, I pay attention to itmore so like I would have said your
(25:26):
research, I would have known ifthey had a song coming out this week.
Well, but that's why when Isaw the Sam mcferston thing, I
was like, this has to bethe same kind of situation because he also,
like is pretty active on his socialmedia, So I feel like I
would have known if a song ofhis came out today. But when I
saw the Ben Kessler feature too,I was like, Okay, maybe maybe
(25:48):
like so it happened with the mainones, when it was like not them,
Yes, so does this happen toyou? You see a song on
streaming that's by an artist that youthink you know, you click it and
they're not even in the song,And sometimes that will happen that maybe someone
you know helped produce the song,But I don't think that's the case in
these no, like not at all. They're really just mislabeled or not just
(26:10):
like bait. I don't like,I don't know how it happened. I
don't know how that happens because it'sobviously ending up on my you know,
curated release radar type situation because Ilistened to those artists, But then it's
not actually those artists. What ifsomeone like Sam McPherson is just really into
this kind of music and so hehas like an alternate profile and sometimes he
(26:30):
just like links the two accounts, but this is him in his garage just
being like, I really love thiskind of music, but it'll mess up
the brand, so we can't releaseit under Sam McFerson. John thought about
this gets to the bottom. Soanyway, I wanted to bring that up
because I was thrown twice. Iwas bamboozled twice, double bamboozled, fool
(26:55):
me once, shame on you fullytwice. So this song that I wanted
to me every time, the songthat I wanted to bring to the table
today is by none other than LukeHemmings. His new song Shakes came out
and on Wednesday, and it's actuallylike a very dreamy song. So it's
(27:30):
just like so cozy and dreamy, like when it was raining the other day,
like I wish I had been likecurled up at home listening to it
like a candle it or something andthe rain. Yeah, this one grew
on me a little bit. Iheard it the first time and I was
like, Okay, it's nice, and then as I sat with it,
I really started to love this songtotally. I agree. The same thing
happened to me. I listened toit the first time and I was like,
okay, like this sounds like, you know, stuff that came off
(27:52):
of his when facing the things weturn away from album that came out last
year or two years ago. Wow, bless you, bless you. But
anyway, we're a mess. We'remesses. So anyway, his his EP
(28:12):
comes out soon, and it's youknow, he's summing up the concept of
this EP as it releases, isjust being surrounded by people at all times,
like being on tour or you know, even when he goes out in
public. I'm sure he's around peopleall the time and just kind of going
through the day to day motions andseeing everyone else like get married or have
(28:36):
kids or like kind of hit differentmilestones. And obviously, like felt like
it was super relatable because obviously usin our late twenties, like, you
know, every at least everyone Iknow, I feel like, is having
babies or getting married or you know, hitting different milestones with their career or
whatever. And obviously there is nolike specific timeline I feel like, but
(28:56):
I truly think about this every singleYeah, And what's crazy is not only
just the people who are having babiesand having and getting married and stuff,
but watching the people who aren't andsome people are starting to freak out now
because they aren't, and I feellike that's part of it too. I
feel like I've had the freak outmoment, but I think majority of my
day to day I'm like, youknow what, it's fine, Like everything
(29:18):
is going to work out the waythat it's supposed to and I'm just going
to ride the wave and then I'llfreak out again. And you want to
know, what's really interesting too,is that when I have my year planned
out, like last year, forexample, I knew I was going to
London for a wedding, I knewI had something in June and August,
and then just like the rest ofthe year was planned out, Tokyo,
Like I had something that was plannedall year and it made the year lie
(29:41):
dude by, which is scary. So I felt too. Yeah, And
for someone in a band, whenyou're you're on tour for a year,
right, it's so extra fast andyou don't have that time to socialize or
go out or even meet someone kids. But you're also constantly surrounded by people,
whether it's your tour mates or youror your management team, or the
(30:03):
crowds themselves, or you know,if if he were to walk the streets
of New York, like the amountof people that would probably come up and
ask him for a picture. It'slike he's constantly living this life in this
day to day motion that kind offeels the same, but is accelerating at
a speed that you can't really keepup with. Like to Michaela's point,
like, yeah, when you plhave your year planned when you're on tour,
think about it. You're years done, Like you're planned out, dude.
(30:25):
Yeah, see your people at home? You barely see your dog.
Like I feel like so many peoplejust say I missed my dog. I
haven't seen them in three months.Yeah, that's crazy. And I think
that we don't notice it as muchbecause a we're here in LA and we're
surrounded by entertainment, and I feellike a lot of people are in this
window when we're single for longer. We're busy and we're doing things, and
so we don't notice it as much. But everyone else around is just flying
(30:45):
by. Yeah, Like a lotof people I went to college with are
just completely years ahead of me rightnow. Yeah, it's insane. Married
baby's house dude. Yeah, whenI hit thirty three, let me tell
you if nothing's going on like that, I'm really gonna have a panic attack,
really have a panic. I say, a house not for people who
live here, right, Like maybesome people are though I know some people
(31:07):
are some people some people are there. If you're able to live at home
and save that money, it's itcan pay off. Yeah, man,
that's tough. But anyway, soI think that's the concept of his upcoming
EP that he has coming out.I think it's called Boy comes out in
like May, April or May.But anyway, I really like him.
I think he has a great voice. Oh yeah, he's got a phenomenal
(31:27):
voice. And I again, afterthe song grew on me, I was
like, it's this dreamy yeah,Like I'm excited to hear what the rest
of it sounds like because I reallyliked his his album that he released a
while back. But it's the sameor a similar sound to this, so
different than five Sauce. Yeah,So I'm just intrigued to see what he
(31:48):
does with the EP, Like ishe going to have a couple that are
very different? You know? Goingback to Ariana's album How We Thought Yes
and is kind of like, oh, that's not at all what the album
was going to sound like totally right, And I didn't really like that song,
yes, and yeah, it grewon me for sure. Yeah,
I was pulling some of my friendsand more said no to that one.
(32:12):
And I'm not a huge Iroonic fan, but that was one of my favorites
that she's ever come out with,so I thought, that's so interesting.
Yeah, oh, I loved Sweetenerand what was the one that came up?
Sweetener seems to be a favorite,But the one after that with like
Nasa and thank You next and thatwas good? Was that after or before?
It doesn't matter that I love thatone though. It's also interesting just
(32:32):
going back to Luke Hemmings for aminute, like, I'm sure as a
band, because five Sauces sound asa band has changed a lot too.
Yeah, and I'm sure as youreflect on what you want to start writing
about what you want to sound like, it's interesting that you probably have to
be on the same page as aband. You have to collectively decide what
you're going to sound like, collectivelydecide where you're at in life. But
if you're going through individual things, like individual struggles per se, like Luke
(32:54):
now can step away and kind offully just feel what he's feeling, and
I have to check that with everybodyelse. Sure, you know, he
can just come out with his ownsound, and I think there's something cool
about that. But it's also sointeresting because like Michael is married with a
kid now and that's probably why he'syeah out to feel these things. But
Luke is also married question mark orengaged? Yea, one really knows if
(33:15):
he's actually married or not. Iknow he was engaged for sure, but
I don't know if they ended upgetting married. Well that's what I'm like
knowing. Yeah, so but anyway, so it's not like everybody that he's
in a band. I mean,like I think Callum's in a relationship.
I don't know if Ashton is.But so, I mean it's interesting to
think about like what he's probably thinkingin his close circle of buddies that he's
(33:37):
been right, you know, surroundedby Yeah, so interesting. That's it
for you, That's it for me? All right? Pulling out your Ox
And speaking of Ox, we satdown with Knox What's update last week?
So we're going to get to thatinterview in just a second, so stick
around. So, last week,Knox came by the studio hung out with
(34:08):
us. We hung out with him, Sure, did I think we fell
in love? Play guy such anice guy, the coolest guy. If
you don't know Knox, you mighthave heard his song Sneakers, which had
a huge moment on TikTok under thatteam shirt I could run I Gotta fuck
with Me first. A few moreviral hits later, we get to not
(34:30):
the nineteen seventy five and she said, I like to comp becoming a hit
on radio. And so our stationhad him in for a private concert last
week. And this dude was sokind enough to just stop by the podcast
hanging out with us. It wasgreat. He is just such a master
songwriter. He's got great energy onstage. He's just the nicest guy in
(34:52):
person. Mikayla Marley and myself actuallysaw him open up for Nightly when he
was here in La and we youwent and said hi to him, And
admittedly we were a few drinks inon a Friday night. This was prior
to him coming in studio. Sothe very first thing we asked him about
is if he remembered that experience, which we were hoping. The answer is
(35:12):
no. So here is a fewminutes of our hang with Knox. Okay,
dude, so I got to askyou a question. You gotta be
honest with me, all right,And this is not like a gotcha question.
I'm not trying to like tricky here. Do you remember us at all?
No, I was hoping that thatwas that's a good thing. There's
some allegations with the very briefly itwas very brief at your merch table outside
(35:36):
of your nightly show. Oh no, there's been some allegations that we had
a few bud lights. Oh dude, and we'll meet you at the merch
tank. Wow. Well thanks forcoming and saying what's up? Okay,
Weirdly, I'm not gonna lie.You did look familiar when I swear,
I'm not even lying. No,I swear, but you know, I
meet a lot of people. Sowe like, before that happened, we
had interviewed nightly that day right hereat the iHeart Theater and then so afterwards,
(35:59):
like we knew you're kicking it atthe merch tent. We were like,
dude, we gotta go save what'sup to knock, Like I know
he's going to be in the buildingsoon, Like we gotta get on the
podcast. But it was a Fridaynight, this show, right, and
like we work morning show, andso we were like, dang, this
is our one night to I kindof have some fun. So there was
something in like the two bud lightsand yeah you read on the second life
and we were like we have togo save what's up anyway? And then
(36:21):
afterwards we have this picture and wewere like, no way, so sorry.
I was like, oh my gosh, I'm leaning on him. I'm
like, dude, that's because Icouldn't stand. I think I don't know.
That is nothing. That is nothingcompared to listen. That's that's an
easy You're good. I was like, don't worry wondering about that, Like
can you tell when people are lateafter the show? Oh yeah, dude,
yeah, especially the guys. Iwill come up and try and act
(36:45):
cool and then we like like, yeah, yeah, you get are you
actually imitating John's because I was likehe does remember me. I knew,
No, I do get. Ido get some characters that the uh yeah,
that I meet after the show. But I mean I love him of
course. Yeah, And especially likeit's the merch tenants. Usually after the
show, it's like everyone's had thewhole night to like, have some fun.
(37:07):
Right, what's like the craziest experienceyou've had with someone after the show?
Bro? I have it right now. I was in Salt Lake,
Dude, this is crazy. Iwas in Salt Lake and I have this
guy. So okay, so fulldisclosure. I'm not going to show this
because I'm very insecure about it.But I'm missing a tooth, right O,
missing a tooth? Right here?Am? I have this guy?
(37:27):
Grown man like forty five years old, comes up to me. He's with
his daughter, and we're taking pictureswhatever. He's like, you know,
love the set, love the set. Whatever. I swear to you,
I'm not lying. He grabs meby my face and he sticks his thumb
in my mouth and like lifts upmy lip and it's like, hey,
brother, are you missing a tooth? And I was like, we're in
front of I swear, we're infront of like fifty like fans that are
(37:52):
like waiting, and like, I'malready so unbelievably insecure about this tooth,
right and yeah, sure enough, this grown man has his thumb in my
mouth. Do you like remember thetaste of it was? It was absolutely
unbelievable, and I like I hadnever been so mad at somebody. And
I'm like, I'm a pretty chilldude. Like even if you're a fan
(38:14):
that does some something weird, LikeI'm like, oh that's you get it.
No, dude, it little morethan weird. Yeah, dude,
this guy was. It was absolutelycrazy. So I had to like tell
Scarity. I was like, getthis guy out of here. I kind
of have a moment, to behonest, but I feel like I deserved
it. Yeah, it was crazy. Yeah, that's hands down the craziest.
So when you go on tour andI know you've opened up for like
Nightly the band Camino Boys, like, girls, are you going out with
(38:36):
the boys after the show? Never? Dude? Really? Yeah, no,
it's it's so funny. Like allmy friends so like all my friends
back home in Ohio they have justno grasp of what my life is like
and all like, dude, Imean you just go out like rage after
the show and like you know, all the chicks and whatever, And I'm
like, did we go back tothe hotel immediately we watch Guy Fieri's dining.
(39:00):
We watched like twenty minutes of thatand then we fall asleep and wake
on Really Yeah, Honestly, I'mpretty grateful. We have like a pretty
tame touring team, Like we're allyou know, we're work dude, you
know what I mean. So likethe last days of tour, Like if
it's the last night of tour orwe have a big break, we might
go out and do something fun.But yeah, we're we're pretty like you
know, we're locked in bro Okay, So how about kiss Mary Kill?
(39:21):
Okay? All the bands you've openedfor so the band Comino Nightly and Boys
Like Girls ooh, okay, Igot a marry band Camino because they were
the first ones to take me on. I wouldn't be in there without them.
I'd have to Uh, I'd haveto kiss Nightly because I got to
do twenty six shows with them.Yeah, and I love Boys Like Girls
but I would have to kill BoysLike Girls because I only got to do
(39:42):
one show with them. So okay, again they're a little bit older.
Yeah, just have you heard theirnew album? Have you heard their new
album? Dude? It's sood likeobsessed with It's so fire. Also,
Marlee, so we were curious aboutthat because your your vibe is kind of
this alternative vibe. It's very likeall American REJ stuff we grew up on.
Right, this so sick. Sowe were like, did you grow
(40:04):
up with that music too? Andso Marley tried to look up how old
you were on Google. Yeah,so I googled how old you were,
and instead of your age showing accurately, it says that you're seventy eight years
old and a British man. Yeah. I get a lot. I get
people send me that all the time. They're like, to deal with that,
I don't really know, but Idon't even think I'm gonna go out
of my way to fix it.Yeah, I think it's kind of funny.
(40:25):
Like people always threenshot it and sendit to me. They're like,
dude, uh, and like we'rein a like the band it says I'm
in a band and this is nota joke. This is obadeim what it
says. It says I'm in aband called the Vibrators Are Pretty Sure yeah,
which is checking you right, yeah, which I'm like, yeah,
dude, that's me in the hallbefore this interview, like one of the
guys was like, what's everyone herefor? And someone in the hall was
(40:45):
like, oh, this guy knockslike he's an up and coming artist.
He's performing in the lounge, andhe was like, oh, I have
to look him up. So Ijust imagine big Boy down the hall,
yeah, looking up knock being likea seventy eight years old dude. I
met him and I like, hedown the hall and I was like,
I was like, no way, because I've seen, like I've seen like
all of his videos from the podcast. Yeah sce like that. And I
(41:07):
was like and so he like camewith me. He's like, what's up,
dude, And I was like,I was so cool, just like
this happened in five minutes. Yeah, I was like, what up,
dude, Like, yeah, man, good to see. And then I
went down the hallway and I toldmy manager West. I was like,
no way, that just happened, dude. I was like, that was
crazy. It's crazy walking in thehalls here. That's kind of how it
is. Believe it. I bety'all see some crazy people. Yeah,
I mean, I'm sure at thispoint now you have too all the time.
(41:27):
I know you've been on American Idolbriefly though, right Yeah, yeah,
my partner never aired, but Idid make it. I did got
to I did get to film, and uh that was Uh, that was
something, so I wanted to asksince it didn't air, did you meet
Ryan Seacrest? I So I methim very briefly, like shook hands,
but my parents got to like myparents and everyone that was with me like
(41:49):
got to properly meet him. ButI did not. I did not actually
other than like a shaking of thehands. Well, yeah, I just
wanted to say because I work inthe morning show and we started this podcast,
you know, talk about new music, up and coming artists, and
it's just so unreal to hear himtalk about you on American Top forty.
I'm like, my two worlds arecolliding, like this is awesome. That's
yeah, Christ talk about me andit's not. Now that's so cool.
(42:13):
So we like pick apart some ofthe details that like are in these songs.
And I briefly heard your story ofI'm So Good at being alone?
Yeah, yeah, can you justkind of go into how that song happened
again, dude? So it wasone of those where I just had I
remember going, Okay, so I'mgoing to get into songwriter nerd lamp please.
Yeah. But so I made thatsong with these producers they go by
(42:34):
Captain Cuts Okay, this is whatblew my mind because in college they put
out this this mix on SoundCloud. It was called Life of Emo. I
listened to it every night before Iwould go out on the weekend. Bro
was, yeah, this mix ofDM and alternative music, and I was
like, these guys are sick. No, they're dogs, and I've never
heard of them. After that,Yeah, no, they're straight up.
They're straight up dogs, and likeit was really cool because so I most
(42:57):
listened to song of twenty twenty wasthis song by Jill Color called Sad Tonight.
I love it. I mean, shout out Chelsea Color, we love
her. She's a stand her inthis house. But they so that was
my mostlis Do song. So thatwas kind of how I like really got
into them and that song specifically inthere in the chorus, it has this
like crazy production sad toad to me. And so I went to the session
(43:24):
with them. I have this ideafor so good of being alone whatever and
kind of what I knew what itwanted to feel like. And we were
like an hour and a half mwe'd written the song whatever, and I
just kind of had like this momentof honesty with them. I was like,
hey, guys, like I justwant to let you know I'm like
such a fan dude, like thisis so cool for me and whatever.
And then I told them about SadTonight, how is my Moslims to song?
(43:45):
And I was like, in thechorus, you guys do this little
production thing. I was like,it's the craziest sound I've ever heard putting
a song ever in my life. And I showed them what sound it was
and then they were like they werelike, oh dude, here, we'll
do this. And then they tookthe exact sound that they use in the
chorus whatever, and they put itand I'm so good at being alone,
so like nobody knows that. Butin the verses when and I'm so good
(44:07):
to being alone, when it doesthat, it's the exact same sound,
like the exact same whatever fad fadto me because it's so good. It's
that's such a crazy. Yeah,yeah, that's crazy. I called my
sister after. I was like, bro, you're not gonna believe it.
(44:28):
It was crazy, Like I willnever listen to I'm so good to being
alone the same ye after that, they give me my blow. That is
so wild. I'm also curious dud, because so obviously we discovered you through
TikTok, right, and then nowthat I think it just happened this week,
that now not the nineteen seventy five. You can't listen to it on
TikTok, dude, it happened yesterday, So lame. What is it?
Like? I feel like when youwhen you see that news come in.
(44:49):
I mean, dude, it's oneof those things where, listen, if
I've learned anything about working in music, things can go wrong and things can
go not your way, like likeimmediately, I've had a lot of crazy
things happen where it's you know, whether it's like losing a team member,
you know, or whatever it is, and so it's just, dude,
it's just one of those things whereit's just like another challenge and it's like,
okay, like what do we youknow, it's you know, there's
(45:13):
nothing when when things are that outof your control. Yeah, it's like,
man, there's nothing we can doabout it, So I'll just figure
something else out. Yeah, itdoesn't do you any good way, Yeah,
exactly, there's no point in willingdo you because in my mind,
we discovered you through TikTok and maybethis isn't the best way to classify it.
But some artists you view as TikTokartists, right, Like, I'm
(45:35):
not saying that's a good thing ora bad thing, but the reality of
the situation is that's how you classifysome artists, especially because some artists you
just know from TikTok. I somehowfeel like you have broken that mold,
Like I don't need you as aTikTok artist anymore. I that's the best
compliment from anybody. What is that? Well, dude, I will say,
And this is why I said I'minna marry Bank Camino, because I
feel like so so a lot ofpeople have their viral moment, right,
(45:59):
and then our whole thing is likebased on the internet. Whereas when I
had my viral moment, like Ihad a song going viral on TikTok and
it just came out. It waslike right in the heat of things,
and as I was happening, likeI posted my first TikTok of sneakers and
three weeks later, I was onthe road with band Comino, you know
what I mean saying so like yeah, so like as I was like,
(46:21):
as as I was having this momentonline. I was also put we did
seven shows a band Comino, andso I would have been it was like
two thousand people a show. Soyou know, I was having this moment
online, but then also was immediatelyput in front of fourteen thousand real people.
Yeah, and you know, andwhen I did those shows, like,
I only had one song out.So I did those shows and was
like, Hey, I'm Knox,Like you don't know this one song?
(46:44):
Yeah. I was like, Iwas like, you don't know me.
I don't have any music out exceptfor one. And I was like,
I'm gonna play you my hole EP. Yeah, I hope you like it.
And so I and so not onlywas I making this impression on the
internet, but I was going outand doing it to real people. And
I feel like those people that wereat those shows, the actual fan base
just grew from that, because yeah, I feel like like getting in front
(47:05):
of real people is so important, and touring is so important, and I
feel like your music is like you'reso good at hooks. Thanks dude.
Do you have that in mind whenyou're in the writing room, Like is
going viral even in the conversation orthought process. I mean, yes and
no, like, you know,my thing like big love to Noa Khan
because you know what he's doing rightnow, he is making songwriting cool again.
(47:27):
Yeah, you know what I mean. So it's like, you know
now, it's just like and Ilove that kind of stuff, like singer
songwriter stuff like that's you know.I grew up on all American rejects and
stuff, but then I got reallyinto singer songwriters. So when I started
making music, it was like, how do I bring these worlds together?
Yeah, and so yeah, Liketo be honest, I don't think much
about the viral stuff. I mean, I do have parts where we'll write
(47:47):
apart and I'm like, oh,dude, that would go like talking and
you know, but dude. Butthat being said, like the whole viral
thing is so dude. Nobody hasany idea what's gonna go viral? Like
I can say this is gonna goso viral, and it does it Like
I had so so good and bad, I had so love Letter. Yeah.
(48:08):
When I made Love Letter, Ishowed it to my label and I
showed it to my guy that Ihave to show my songs, and he
was like, you know, Iwas like, hey, I think this
is a hit. I think it'sgonna go crazy on TikTok, and he
was like, you know, he'slike love Letter, love Letter down.
He's like, I get it.It might be a little overwritten, and
so I was like, I'm gonnapost this anyway. So I posted it.
(48:28):
See what happens. Yeah, Iposted it and it crushed, and
naturally all the comments were like loveletter, love letter down. So genius
whatever it is. Yeah, weliterally do this podcast every Friday on New
Music Friday. And when love Lettercame out, do we let letter let's
go sick? Well dude. Butthen it's like but then at the same
time, so then I have thisother song called man Down. Same thing
(48:50):
happened. I was like, bro, this song's gonna snap on TikTok.
It's gonna go crazy, and samething. I showed it to my label
and they were like, ah,this isn't a single, and I was
like, this is a single andthey were like, no, it's not.
So I did the same thing.I was like, well, like,
watch this posted on TikTok six times, like two thousand views of video,
and I was like shit, dI was like, they were right.
So it came back. It cameback. You can't predict it,
(49:12):
man, exactly, somewhe of alottery system. Yeah. Yeah, but
that's why I'm grateful to have, like, you know, not that b
one. TikTok don't have real fans, That's not what I mean. But
like you know, I'm grateful thatI do have people that are paying that
much attention that you know, butit converts to people in the audience.
Yeah, it's like, dude,we just put out me myself in your
eyes three days ago, thank you, but we do. We didn't do
it, like I posted five videosof it. We had one that did
(49:35):
one hundred thousand. Everything else wasbelow that, And like the song's already
at almost like half a million streamsand it's been like four days. So
it's like that is like I feellike a lot of people that start on
TikTok don't have that, So I'mlike super grateful. Yeah, dude,
well it shows man, that isawesome. Before we close out here,
we want to we put a bunchof your songs in a bracket. We're
gonna do it a quick, littlerapid fire tournament style. Okay, we
want to find out which is thebest song in your eyes. All right,
(49:58):
all right, which the best? But yeah, all right, here
we go, so love letter orHere's to us? Love letter? All
right, love Here's to us though, but love letter, not the nineteen
seventy five or mean myself in youreyes? Oh, because of what not
the nineteen seventy five has done forme. I gotta go with that,
But I might like me myself inyour eyes a little better to like listen
to. Okay, so which oneare you doing? Nineteen? Just want
(50:22):
to be clear, this is veryserious stuff. Okay, miss when you
missed me? Featuring nightly or loveletter? Oh I love my nightly boys,
but it's got to be a loveletter, okay, perfect, Not
the nineteen seventy five or Sneakers.Ooh, they both did something big.
That's tough. I do. Gottago with not the nineteen seventy five because
(50:44):
I think it's a better written song. Okay, I'll say that. Love
letter or not the nineteen seventy five. You're ready, you ready, ready?
It's got to be love letter.Ye, love letter is my favorite
letter. Slept on. I thinkit hasn't had Yeah it will. Well,
dude, I genuinely appreciate you takingthe time. We're such big fans.
We love your music. I knowwe got to get you on stage
(51:06):
in a minute, though, soI guess I can say a stream,
not the nineteen seventy five and thebrand new one, me myself in your
eyes. Thanks for kicking it,Knox there, y'all are awesome. Thanks
for having me. Thank you,
