Speaker 1 (00:01):
Here's your host, Alex Garrett. We have a follow up
here on one leg up with Alex Garrett. We have
a follow up. Fernando Mahia, remember the man who runs
Schmear Bagel and cafe right here in Port Washington, had
a major win as announced on July second, twenty twenty five. Yes,

(00:25):
two hundred forty nine years after the declaration of independence
where they say all men should be equal. Well for
Nando Mahea found his justice two hundred for nine years
later when they won a temporary reprieve from a long
standing deportation order when his attorney filed emotion to delay

(00:48):
and whatnot. This was a report on news Day and
by Port Li Press Patch Port Washington. I mean a
lot of outlets cover this even as I'm working through
the papers here The New York Times and a Wednesday,
June twenty fifth, twenty five article titled Nassau County is

(01:09):
sued for working with US immigration agents aka ice. Luis
Ferrey Sderni writes this The suit comes as Long Island,
where immigrants account for about one fifth of the population,
has experienced a visible increase in ice activity in recent
weeks that has prompted protests, he writes, including a rally

(01:35):
on Saturday, which was going to be June twenty eight
at the time, on Saturday in Port Washington and Long
Islands North Shore, where more than one hundred residents demanded
this was Saturday prior actually demanded the release of Fernando Mahea,
the longtime manager of a popular bagel shop who was

(01:56):
arrested by Ice this month. He was arrested for an overstay,
and to me, as I've said before, there are people
here illegally that are doing real crime, like real criminal
activity overstaying a visa. I've sort of softened on. This

(02:19):
does not feel as intense. It's something that Mehea can rectify.
And I'm so glad that he won this deportation reprieve
because because he does want to contribute to society. He
is contributing to society. He delivers to my fiance and
I at the door here. We know him, We've talked

(02:39):
to him. He's not a bad guy, and so I'm
very excited that he won the reprieve. More importantly, it's
very interesting. The New York Times picked up on this
story as well. Following a June twenty first protest in
favor of Mahia. And this is why community matters. Look,
we can talk about all the division that the media

(03:00):
wants or so, but when the community comes together like that,
that's why I love America. That is the spirit of America.
Community always wins out over government. I will always say
that the founding fathers did not intend for a big
government to rule our lives. They intended for communities to

(03:21):
rule America. It's for the people, by the people. That's
what they write. For the people, by the people, not
government entities. And while I have always liked what Bruce
Blakeman is doing, and I agree that there should be
a crackdown on violence illegals, not those that oversay visus

(03:46):
because those can be rectified. Those can be rectified. But
should NASA County collaborate with ICE in the way they
have Civil liberty unions say no. I say there should
be a presence of ICE if needed. However, a collaborative

(04:08):
effort like that where they're literally partnering just to make
Trump happy, that doesn't feel good to me. That doesn't
sound good to me. And it was interesting that this
all happened around July second, because a day after, on
July third, they approved the Big Beautiful Bill, and there
were two Rebublicans that said no. And I hadn't really

(04:30):
unveiled this thought, but when I was watching the fireworks
on July fourth, love of country, yes, but it just
was a bit sad that they were signing this bill
in to affect that same day that we're stripping different

(04:50):
you know, kind of accesses to Medicaid, because I believe
while they're trying to root out the Medicaid for those
here illegally, they're also rooting out Medicaid for Americans that
are here, born here. And don't forget the SNAP program,
which can use a lot of change also, but don't

(05:11):
strip it away. And so as the fireworks were going
off as President Trump was signing this big beautiful bill,
I couldn't help that this is not what the Founding
fathers wanted. There is much more work to do, and
this reprieve to find out about. I know it's July
twentieth and I'm reporting on it now, but to find
out about it now gives me hope that when the

(05:33):
community and for the people really come to life, that
is what the Founding fathers wanted, the community efforts, not
the government telling us what to do. That's what we
got away from in two hundred and forty nine years ago.

(05:56):
We also got away from judges ruling for the whole land.
I keep saying that, but it's true. But we didn't
go from independence from Britain to be told what to
do by a bigger government. The government should be working
with us, not against us. And in this case it

(06:20):
seems like they were working against this hard worker, Fernando Mahia,
by detaining him and making his life hell. I know
that he had attorneys, he had legal fees. There will
be gofund me signs all over Port Washington for him.
But here to announce on July twenty I, in case
you here already, Fernando Mahia has won a deportation reprieve

(06:45):
as of July second. That is major and I'll have
all the details in the description below. But this is
one case where you can have one lego, where the
justice and can have one lego for those hard workers,
one case at a time, though not across the land,

(07:07):
as some Vegian judges have felt the need to do.
And so that's it. That's how we have one leg
up is by reporting these winds for those in our communities,
not just on a wide scale thing, but right here
in Port Washington or in Queens or in the Bronx,

(07:30):
or in Brooklyn or New York City, because those winds,
those community efforts will both have one leg up for
America as we had into year two fifty, as we
had into year two fifty. I was going to report
on another story, but I'll leave that for another day
because that's a lot more intense, but one to end

(07:53):
this week with some good news. EIGHTYA preview coming up,
the eighty A coverage coming up this week on one
Leg Up with Alex Garrett and a win for Port Washington.
As Smear Begeling Cafe has Bernanda, he is deportation order

(08:14):
temporarily reprieved, I meaning he can stay and hopefully he
comes back and helps out Smear Begeling Cafe. And we
can all congratulate on this win. And I know, as
I said watching the fireworks on July fourth, there's so
much more work to do to make it so this
country is for the people, by the people, as the

(08:36):
founding fathers wanted now two hundred and forty nine years ago,
