Speaker 1 (00:01):
Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, well, I'm listening
to New York Sports Talk today and I have to
fire it up here on the one leg up on
Sports feature because I did this last time when I
thought Jasan Dominga should have been batting lead off, and
when they batted them lead off five straight days or so,
they had a five game win streak. Coincidence, I think not.
(00:24):
You want to know what I think. On August fifth,
twenty twenty five, with the Yankees looming in the second
wild card spot all the way from first, they fall
into tide with the Mariners first second wild card in
the American League, you know it's gonna change it. I'm
gonna speak out on this projection from the bullpen. You
(00:49):
got all these relievers, now you send down Bird. So
here's what you do. I still say consistency at the
top of the lineup will help this push. We're still
in a playoff push. I can't believe in August. I'm
worried about what Boston's doing already. But here we are.
We're here, and I'm gonna throw this out there to
(01:14):
manager Aaron Boone. If you want to really seal down
these games, and if you want to not panic at
a five to four lead, I think putting in Deval
in the seventh was a panic move yesterday. I don't
think that should be the long term practice. So here's
what we do. Sixth inning Luke Weaver, seventh inning Devin
(01:38):
Williams or lug Wisega or a lighter junior or cruise.
Eighth inning. Looks like Bennar is your guy. Ninth inning
is Doval and see how that works. But Williams should
not touch the ninth inning the rest of the season.
We've been burned time and time again. That bullpen was
(01:59):
looking fantastic. Stick that inning from Weaver, that inning from Dovall,
that inn'ting from Bendar. Then Williams comes in and disaster strikes,
and then Berg comes in and he gives up the
game winner. Look, I haven't been this passionate about a
bullpen since I used to be in the suite saying,
(02:22):
all right, well they're gonna bring up the lefty now
to face the lefty batter, blah blah blah blah. Well
I'm invested. You bring in a few new arms you
it's gonna be fascinating how Boom mixes and matches as
bullpen the rest of the way, because remember there's also
a bullpen budget they got to deal with also every night,
every fricking night, they deal with a bullpen budget. And
(02:48):
now they just have to nail down these games. I
still believe there could be a bridge to a closer,
and that closer should be Dovall, and I believe that
bridge will be very strong. And I still stand by
what I said on Thursday, which is I still feel
like this bullpen has a potential to be a nineties
(03:10):
kind of version of the twenty twenty five Yankee bullpen.
And again I'm gonna say it here on August fifth,
twenty twenty five, Consistency at the top of the lineup
(03:32):
is what's needed the bullpen. The bullpen needs to have
a consistent rote you know, dedicated guy for each inning.
That's needed. We love our starters to go seven, right
that way, it's only eight to nine, but it doesn't
(03:54):
happen all the time. Hasn't happened in a little while.
Schmidt was one of the last guys to go deep
in a game, and he was no hitting. To be
more specific, he was no hitting. The orioles a few
(04:15):
about a month or two ago on June twenty first
seven hitless innings, he should have gone in for the eighth.
But I digress, you're not gonna get that every night.
And we love to get that from a freed a
rodawn now a heel, a Schlitzler has a potential to
(04:35):
do that, I think, but we can't. We can't mess
around with the back end of the game. And if
they follow this formula, remember Tory had a couple of
formulas going on. Tory had the formula of bringing in
Stanton and Nelson and getting into Mariano, and getting into Mariano,
(05:01):
Aaron Boone has its potential to build the formula here
to get us through this long elongated rough patch. Elongated
rough patch. So the formula to me is going to
be Weaver in the sixth, Williams in the seventh, Bennar
(05:21):
in the eighth, Dovall in the ninth. And of course
Williams can be substitutent, a lewaizega, a lighter junior, a
cruise if you do not coming to Williams on that day,
or a bopen budget thing. But keep it, keep it formulaic.
The nineties were formulaic for the Yankees, and so I
(05:42):
would say here on the one leg up on sports
for August fifth, twenty twenty five, this should be rock bottom,
tied for the Mariners for the second wild card spot
after leading the division seven games up in Jude should
be the rock and how do we climb ourselves out
(06:03):
of it? Have one leg up on formulas, not analytics,
but formula, and that will get us back, not only
in the chase. I still think there's time to take
this division and overtake Boston Aaron Boone, just as I
have one leg up on formulas. That's how the Tory
(06:26):
era went, and now the Girardi era went in a sense,
but mainly the Toy era. He had that winning formula
and you know what, twenty six years later, I think
of ninety eight, twenty seven, I guess years later, Cashman's
done it again. He's provided a manager with the formula
(06:49):
for success. I know Jake Bird was sent bent down.
That's not a good look, but overall, there's a formula
for success here and Boone's got to read into it
and get rid of the analytics. Do what Tori did.
Have one leg up on formula, and I do think
once again I'll say it till I'm blue in the
(07:11):
fricking face. Jusan di Mingez leading off is part of that.
Formula is part of that, for he will set the tone.
He sets the tone every time in that leadoff position,
and that's how you develop a winning formula. That's all
(07:36):
I got for now, but one leg up on Sports
with Alex Garett today urges Aaron Boone to have a
one leg up on formula because formulaic baseball, like fundamental baseball,
will get you beyond the wild card spots and back
in the division race. We'll talk to you soon on
(08:02):
the one like our network
