Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, Well, as promised, it is the Shake It
Off Soundbites of the week this week, and I once
again was given the opportunity by Lucas A Ferrara to
join his show with Mert Roberts on AM nine seven
the Answer and ask our guests the last couple of
weeks some questions and with the Mam Donnie election looming

(00:22):
large last week and this week, of course, I asked
about the NYPD and its fate. And I first asked
that to Joe BURRELLI, former councilman and actually minority whip
of the city Council, about whether or not Mam Donnie

(00:42):
would truly welcome back to Jessica Tish and if Commissioner
Tish would actually accept the offer to return back to
the NYPD.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
We only have a few minutes left, Joe, and we
have a question from our producer, Alex Garrett.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Go galax, all right, we're talking about the Social Workers NYPD.
I have a question for you, Joe Low the extending
of the oll advertance to Jessica Tish. Will she accept
it if he gets elected or not?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
I don't know. It's it's a tough call for her, right,
I mean, she has her own political ambitions that she
might want to test, you know, and if she's maybe
the candidate to run against Mamdani in his first reelection.
And the other question is, you know, who's in charge
of the NYPD. Is is it going to be Commissioner
Tish or is it going to be Zoa and Momdani.
I mean, at the end of the day, you know,

(01:27):
she serves, like all commissioners, at the pleasure of the mayor.
And if the mayor is telling the NYPD we're changing
our policies, he has the right to do that. He
has the ability to do that. So it's unclear like
whether just having her there as a way to satisfy moderates.
I mean, that's all he did. By the way. He
was so smart to do it, you know. And I
even criticize, like Curtis Leewolf for being too shortsighted to

(01:50):
even see things like, hey, why don't you just say
you're going to keep Jessica Tish. She seems really popular,
Maybe people will think you're serious about being mayor. He
didn't do that, of course, but like I think it
was a good play by Mom Donnie to try to
show people that he could be moderate. He could be
a little bit and say more moderate than his critics.
Smite my painting to me.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
And then I don't if you know this name, Chief Aradondo,
who was the Minneapolis police chief during that George Floyd
tragedy and the aftermath and yes, even the votes to
disband defund the Minneapolis Police Department following the George Floyd tragedy. Well,
I asked him what Mam Donnie's threats to disband even

(02:30):
one part of the NYPD would mean for this city.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Hey, Chief, our producer Alex Garrett has been patiently waiting.
He's a big chief, So go ahead, Alex, say loaded
the chief.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Chief awesome having united as always. And you know we're
talking about the socialism, the social you know, social worker part,
But I would about the disbanding part. When New Yorker's
here that mom Donnie wants to disband units. I mean,
you kind of underwent those threats in Minnesota. Can the
city council step been in stop that? I mean, can
they stop them from disbanding units here?

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Well, I will tell you real time, Alex, what happened
here in Minneapolis the previous election for the first time
in the city of Minneapolis. A ballot referendum was put
on for basically to disband the Minneapolis police Department. Communities
overwhelmingly came out and voted against it. In matter of fact,

(03:24):
alex communities that had had a history of grievances, documented
grievances and complaints with the minimsolute department came out and
voted against it. And the reason why Alex is they
said two things can be true at once. We can
have a police department that needs reform, that needs to
be improved, but we still need police. And I will

(03:47):
tell you that this recent mayoral election here in Minneapolis,
public safety was number one on the ballot and people said,
at the end of the day, we don't need less police.
We need more police. We need for them to do
the job right, but we need more police. So so
it will be interesting to see. I've I've certainly aware

(04:08):
of previous comments that Marrilect Mendami has has said about NYPD,
but I certainly will tell you here in Minneapolis that
has been walked back. Those sentiments have been walked back
here in Minneapolis about disbanding the police and defunding the police.
Uh that that is that is not aged well here.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
And one last thing rich for Commissioner Tish, she's hearing
all of this, what's your advice to her, because you've
led a department, talk about your advice or her as
she leads into this next phase in New York.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
It fields like I think, I think it's going to
be very important. Obviously, the Commissioner is going to have
to have a strong relationship with the Mayor. I think
it's important for them, uh, you know, obviously she serves
at the pleasure of the Mayor. I think it's going
to be important for for her to uh talk about
her leadership style, you know, how how best she will

(05:00):
work with the Mayor's office, what she sees as the
strengths of NYPD in terms of providing that public safety
to all New York residents. And I think it's going to.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Be important for him.

Speaker 4 (05:14):
Obviously he's publicly, at least from my vantage point, he's
tried to either clarify statements he's made in the past
regarding NYPD. I think all of us should have some
grace in terms of learning in time. And I think
it's but it's going to be critically important that they're

(05:34):
on the same page. I think that I will say
here from Minneapolis. As soon as Minneapolis residents or New
York City residents, if they see that there's a bit
of daylight between the Commission and the mayor, that can
be problematic. And so I think not that they're always
going to agree, but I think that moving forward, that

(05:55):
both of them seem unified in their approach to keeping
New New York City residence safe. I think that's a
good way to at least start out.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Now as being of law enforcement. And by the way,
thanks again Lucas for having me join in and ask
them questions there. But the other thing I want to
mention about law enforcement is there's an article by USA
Today that says Mamdanni could be arrested by Donald Trump.

(06:28):
That's right, USA Today writing this article with the headline
Trump threatens to punish NYC over mam Donnie Well he
arrests the new mayor, this would be possibly stripping him
of a citizenship of Mandanni, then the assistant on Federal
Immigration Enforcement. That sounds kind of insane. Mamdanni, born in Uganda,

(06:49):
moved to the United States as a child and was
actually raised in Manhattan's born in Side Heights, became a
naturalisis in twenty eighteen. The fact that he's threat to
arrest Mom Donnie, I would not want that unless it's
not a real, possible, plausible cause. Other than that, don't

(07:09):
do that. I would say, let's see how he does
his first term. But more importantly, let's not arrest him
on something that it seems like a non factor. The
guy's a citizen. The guy is a citizen, d J referral,
have to DOJ referral whatever. The guy's a naturalized citizens
of twenty eighteen. Leave him alone in that regard. Arresting

(07:30):
him would be dumb, but we must be mindful of
his threats to the NYPD, which is why I asked
Joe Borelli and Chief Ardando about his plans maum Donnie's
plans heading into twenty twenty six. And I'm so honored
that Lucas Embert allowed me to chime in the last

(07:54):
couple of weeks, as it's been election heavy here on
all the amnis of the n sure, but one like
up with Alex Garrett. We'll talk to you soon.
