Speaker 1 (00:01):
Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
All right, well here on the One Leg Up Network,
I'm Alex Garrett, and do you remember when I did
this one Leg Up flashback with Brandon Nimmo Colin, which
is why the Mets and Astros are tied at four
in the bottom of the ninth in a rain delay.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
Oh two coming, and that's driven out to left center field.
Back in the cap here the wall time hair. Brandon
Nimmo ties the game with his one hundred career hormone,
a two run shot for Nimmo, and the Mets have
come back to tie at four to four.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Of the seventh.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
That call courtesy of s n Y.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
That's right, Brandon Nimmo, a two run shot opposite field
Jack his one hundredth, yes, one hundredth home run of
his career. Now, I got to talk to him when
he was in his younger stages, as I met back
in twenty seventeen, thanks to doctor Dan Miller's recommendation of a
press pass and his hook up there with WOX Radio, which.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
This aired on.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
By the way, here, Brandon and I talked about the
mentorship of Curtis Granderson and how yes, back in twenty seventeen,
Nimo was looking to improve and then of course today
he's improved so much he h at Homer one hundred.
So Brendan, you're starting tonight at part you know, you're
on the leadoff spot tonight. Yeah, but it's gonna be
(01:32):
a line up about Curtis I feel about that, And
how do you feel?
Speaker 4 (01:34):
You know, we all love Curtis, but you know, it's
part of the business and so you have to you
have to realize that. For it's it's something that you know,
I think we all just have to go about our
business the same way. Remember how he went about his
Kitnatu was an incredible guy. He really led by example.
So just trying to you know, keep his work ethic
(01:58):
and his humble missile live.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Now even back up a little while now, So what's
it like being back up here? And what do you have?
You said, what are you working on?
Speaker 4 (02:05):
You know, just just really having fun and and you know,
swinging the bat, you know, working on the teeth beads.
It's it's, you know, working on all of it. It's
it can all be improved. I think for the day
just stopped working, this day stopped playing. So you just
keep working on on your whole game, trying to improve
it all.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
All right, Brandon, welcome luck to the rest of us
in the rush of the away games.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
We got it, Thank you. I mean, how cool is that?
Brandon Nemo?
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Nice guy, one of the nicest guys and honestly a
cornerstone to.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
This met team until he wasn't.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Last night Jeff passing the ESPN room breaking the news
that Brandon Neimo waved his no trade clause in a
trade for Tech to Texas for Marcus Simeon. I think
it's interesting that back in twenty seventeen he recognized.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Trades are part of the business.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Life in baseball is also business, to the point where
eight years later in twenty twenty five, in twenty twenty five,
he is now waves his no trade claws and gone
to Texas. But Brandon Nimo is one of three New
(03:24):
York I would say icons are really hallmarks that had
departed because they had given the team a time, their
time and energy and love and said well it's time
to move along.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
And I'm sure for Brandon making the NLCS, obviously we
saw the.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Emotions in his face when they made the NLCS against
the Dodgers.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
I mean, he was on that one hundred and one
win team again and.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
That got swip the by the Padres, which was unbelievable
at home. So then a couple of years later making
it to the NLCS versus the hot Dodgers just last
year and beating Philly of course, but in his seven
eight years actually I believe nine because he came in
(04:24):
twenty sixteen, what uh part of this met team. But
he waved his no trade class And that's what I
want to highlight tonight. Brandon Nimmo joining Chris Crider who
waved his trade no trade class to go to Anaheim.
And then of course John Tavares, who basically told the
(04:46):
Aliders he was gonna stay, of course does not stay,
basically requests to trade to Toronto. It begs the question here,
what do we do to make these teams more.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Staying power. I mean the Rangers, I guess told them
we're gonna trade them. So christ said, okay, trade me.
That's it. That was it.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
But the no trade clause waving is the thing that
I wanna highlight because quite frankly, it means that these
guys are giving their heart and soul for a point
a period of time till they realize, maybe we cannot
win here, Maybe we do have to move along. Maybe
(05:43):
it is time to spread our wings and go elsewhere
and see if we can win that vaunted championship.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Toronto struggled.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Toronto has struggled even with Austin Matthews, to get to
that point as a.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Franchise, to get near the Stanley Cup final finals.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
The Ducks, they're sort of rebuilding, and now criters come
in and electrified that team.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
And now Brandon Nimmo.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Of the three leaving a Mets team that, yes, has
won Soto, but what pitching do they have?
Speaker 1 (06:23):
What pitching do they have?
Speaker 2 (06:28):
And so what's it going to take for our New
York teams to either not blow up the whole core
so that other guys don't want to be there anymore,
or start to focus on winning and not tanking and
non on draft picks and none on.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Who can be the next best guy.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
We call up on the farm, you know, we we
calledivate on the farm, or next best free agent signing
we can grab the read no trade clause waves here
feel like a similar theme. New York does not have
(07:10):
the staying power we thought it once did.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Aaron Judge stayed.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Because I think he knew in his heart he's a
Yankee through and through Derek Jeter, lifelong Yankee through and
through David Wright. If he wasn't injured, yes, and of
his career has meant, but he would have been even
more successful as a Met if he didn't injure his
back like he did. There are lifelongers, we're just seeing
(07:43):
far and few between of them. And part of it
is a decision on management parts to blow up a
team now when you could have kept Goodro, you could
have kept Cocko, you could have kept well Truba was
a problem, but you could have kept those guys on
the Rangers. But you didn't, and Crider's gone. Now the
(08:07):
Mets need to rebuild, and clearly getting rid of Nemo was.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Part of the rebuilt. It's a sad day though, to
see Nimo go.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
He was a decent player, a decent guy on and
off the field. He was a He bled the orange
and blue pinstripes right there. And so my question to
you at Alex at alex ganyc dot com, Alex at
alexanyc dot com, what will make the city have staying power?
(08:41):
We've lost it. Teams are even not not even afraid
to come into New York anymore because they might They
know they have a chance to win, a very good
chance to win.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
We used to be a feared city.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
We used to be the city no one ever wanted
to wave their no trade clause for. We used to
be the city that said, yes, we're gonna keep winning,
You're gonna keep staying here, We're gonna keep building. No,
it's all about imploding and sticking with coaches till the
very last second. I mean, Bowen should have been fired
(09:15):
after the Denver collapse.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
It happened today. Fine, But it's just this systematic, systematic.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Problem of staying power that Brendan Nimo now joins Chris
Krider and John Deaveres in highlighting here.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
In New York Sports.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
So maybe the goal now is, instead of blowing up teams,
is to have one leg up on staying power for
our New York sports, one leg up on staying power
for New York sports.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
How do we get there? How do we achieve it?
Speaker 2 (09:58):
For the Yankees, you don't stick with the Devin Williams
for nine more times in the next season.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Maybe you do, Maybe you do resign them. I don't
like that reunion idea. But if I'm aren't judge and
I signed into a nine year.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Deal, one that did include a World's aias appearance, I
would want to see my management making the right moves here,
bringing the right guys.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
In, and as fans.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
As fans, we should want our teams to play with
respect and pride. It was five blown losses too long,
It was two blown losses too long for the Giants
to make the move of getting rid of Bowen. But
we make these.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Moves as a city way too late, way too late.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
And maybe when you see a crider, when you see
a demo, when you see it Tavaris wave their no
trade clause. Basically, you're seeing these guys saying we don't
like the.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Way these teams are run.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
And if they're not happy with the way the teams
are run, we sure as hell should be upset too.
We the fans should be upset, if our players are upset,
we should be upset, and we should want our teams
to strive for better, not be in the dumpster for
(11:37):
another draft pick because another rebuild.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
I think Nemo is thinking, like I did, I'm getting
too old for this shit. I gotta move along before
especially now that started just kind of pushing me out
the door. I'm getting too old for this. I gotta
move along and do what's best for right for me.
What the business move for me. You don't want me here, fine,
I'm gone.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
But that again goes to not having enough staying power.
At the same time, Trent Grisham signs a twenty two
million dollar deal to stay with the Yankees. To stay
with the Yankees, he believes in something here. He took
that deal.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
People could be pissed, but I think the.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Show's character when a guy who was a free agent
wants to come back, wants to contribute to the Yankees
and build off the year he had. Maybe there's something
here that he sees that aren't judged so a few
years ago that made him come back beyond just wearing
the pinstripes. So in that case, we had staying power.
(12:50):
But in these other cases where these guys are waving
their no trade claws, we have to figure out a
way to keep these guys happy they don't feel like
they have to wave their no trade clause so that
they do want to be in this team for the
rest of their career, and as Lou and I talk about,
(13:11):
I think getting rid of analytics and all these sports
will be big. I think the idea of blowing up
teams should go out the window. I think you got
to figure out the core.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Remember we talk about the Yankees the Core four.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
There is no core anything anymore with any of these teams,
and the Mets lost their core. He waved his no
trade clause. And I do not blame Brandon Nimo for this.
(13:45):
I think he's doing what he needs to do his
first family. But it should be a wake up call.
How do we stay attractive as a market, as a
city of all these sports teams, to make these guys
stay through their career.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
And love it here.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Because you'll see other career, other trade clauses might be
waved down the road by somebody.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
I mean, this is really a big deal to me.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
That he is the third guy in a span of
about ten years to wave as no trains that I'm moving,
I'm leaving, I'm doing something better. I believe in what
Texas is doing now, but we can do better as
(14:56):
a city to make this more attractive for these guys
to stay in the pin stripes. Whether it's orange and
blue or the Yankee pin stripes. Stay in the blue shirts,
stay in the Big blue, the game green, the Devil's red,
the Islander's blue and orange. And it's a top down effect,
(15:27):
a top down effect. The Giants have an interim firing
a defensive coordinator. Where was the guts to fire him before?
If Davill could have the option, whine and he to
do it, and Marr had the option, whin, didn't you
to do it? So if you look at this latest
(15:50):
note trade Claus Wave and this trader Brandon Neimo.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
That's a wake up call.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
That the long standing Met who's been there since twenty
sixteen is moving along.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
The city is not gonna be meant for career year
career players anymore.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
On the trajectory we're going, and maybe the culture of
winning and the culture of respect and pride on the field.
I mean, he also went through a season where the
Mets completely screwed up their season. They were the best
team in June, then they just tanked Dove out of
(16:39):
the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
It was stunning.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
This year. I think Nemo saw that there wasn't gonna
be much change, so he moved and he went and
accept the not trade that waving the trade close except to.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
The deal, and he's on the greener pastures if you will.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
So all these teams watching this moment, know your career
player wants to be happy and wants a team around
him to make them happy so that they're not slipping
and falling short.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
Every season.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
These guys will go out there just to play one
sixty two and go home. They play to win the game,
as Herman Edwoods said, and Brendan Nimmo was an example,
a shining example of that. He had one leg up
in New York sports and we will miss him dearly.
But just think about this, how do we have staying
(17:51):
power in New York City for these career athletes that
should want to spend their time in New York and
not want a way. There're no trade claws. Let's make
the city more attractive and make this a sports town
once again.
