Speaker 1 (00:02):
Here's your host, Alex Garrett.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
All right, Well, as you guys know, last week there
was tragedy and that tragedy was highlighted by the sports world,
and I want to get into that today because whatever
your political views are, you lost a human being last
week through an assassination in Charlie Kirk and Luther Manelo.
We did not have you on because of that breaking

(00:27):
news coverage. I mean, it was just awful what we
had a witness and see after. But the sports teams
coming around to do a moment of silence should not
have been controversial, should it have been?

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Hey, Alex, good to have you to be back. Yeah,
last week was terrible. It was last Wednesday, just about
this time that we got the terrible news. And yeah, no,
nothing that any of the sports teams did take a
moment of silence to honor somebody was assassinated. It should

(01:00):
be controversial. I mean, we have to. We just have
to be just more caring than that.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
So and by the way, for those who hate that,
you know Judge shook hands with Trump, I want to
remind you Derek Jeter also shok hands with the President
of the United States in two thousand and one. Before
his amazing first pitch in the months following nine to eleven.
I mean, were you remember that, Louis. The dramatic moment

(01:30):
of George W. Bush stepping on that field to throw
the first pitch a bullet a strike was unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
I do remember, and he was wearing a very heavy
bulletproof vest and he was still able to deliver the strike,
which was during one of the darkest times in American history.
In my lifetime, I never thought New York City would
be attacked, and it did happen, and hopefully it never

(01:58):
happens again, and thank god, since that day it hasn't.
But we move on. Sports is what gives us our outlet.
And uh, I mean last the first two weeks NFL
season or in a book, and I assume that's where
you want to start, but just let me know if that's.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Actually where I want to start. Is more because I
mentioned Judge and a guy had met last year, cal
Rally is on the march. I mean, this kid is
what fifty six fifty seven? I mean, he could break
this record, couldn't he.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Now? Obviously he's in shooting distance to break the record,
no doubt about it. He's at fifty six. He set
the record for most home runs by switcher. He passed
the great Nickey Mantle. He two home runs last night.
He has Seattle in first place. Seattle's one nine in
a row in this season. And this is not only

(02:50):
for the Seattle Maron is for everybody. All these teams
streak after streak ten out of eleven, then they lose
eight out of ten. You could, Alex, you could just
basically check every team that's a contender or semicontender. They've
had just incredible ups and downs. But cal Raley, I mean,

(03:11):
is he's switched h here. He plays the toughest position
on the field, catcher. He was the Platinum Glove the
Player the year, which means he was the best defensive
player in the league, regardless of position. I know, you know,
everybody says that Judge is still in the league for MVP,

(03:33):
and I'm sure Judge really doesn't care as long as
the Yankees win the World Series and he's the MVP
in the World Series. But just on regular season alone,
and there's still ten eleven games left, and he's ten
eleven games will be critical for the not only the
playoff and Pennant race, but for the MVP race. But

(03:55):
if he said, if he sets the record with sixty two,
and it's gonna be hard to get there, but if
he hit sixty home runs, they make the playoffs. So
they finished first. I can't see how you do not
get this guy the MVP. In my opinion, he should
win it fairly easily. But you listen to all of
the quote unquote baseball experts and they still have Judge ahead.

(04:19):
But you know, if I had a vote today, right
now and there's still ten, ten eleven games to go,
I would vote for cal Rawley.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
He deserves And you know, it's almost like the Judge
situation where if he doesn't hit, the whole team might
struggle a little bit. So he's he's really been the
catalyst for every mirror in their game, and it's it's
been interesting because they had their hitting missus. I think
they had like a few game losing streak year and
there they've been winning year and it's been a wild year.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
But I think they're close to Houston still right yeah, now,
right now they're ahead. They were half a game ahead,
and they've done a tremendous job. They have outstanding starting
kitchen staff and Houston's just been just been banged up
from day one and somehow they're still They're still in
there at half the game out. But you know, uh,

(05:12):
Jordan has probably the most underrated great offensive player in
the major leagues. Suffered another injury the other night, crossing
home plate standing up crossing home plate on the base hit,
he severely sprained his ankle. And he's going to be out,
according to the Astros, for a while. And these injuries
are definitely having an uh an effect on on this playoff.

(05:36):
On this playoff phrase, I mean Roman Anthony for the
Red Sox, he's probably gonna be out until next year
with with the with the injury to his to his oblique.
I believe it is uh he had he quickly became
their best player after they brought him up. Uh he
got off a little bit of a slow start, but

(05:57):
then he's he's been breaking UH. And But for the
Red Sox, this is like a bonus year. They're gonna
make the playoffs. Obviously, I don't know how far they're
gonna go, but it looks like the Toronto Blue Jays
believe that or not. According to finish with the best
have a great opportunity to pass the Tigers for the

(06:20):
best record in the American League. And the Tigers have
been under five hundred for like the last sixty five
sixty six games, so they haven't they haven't played well, Alex.
This whatever, these final six teams are in and I
know in the American League it looks like just about
it might be just about everybody be settled and nationally
get still a little bit wide open at the end,
with the Mets just in free fall, even though they

(06:42):
won their last two games. But once you get to
the playoffs, Alex, any one of those of those twelve
playoff teams could win it. And now, with ten games
to go in the season, the Los Angeles Dodgers certainly
are not the shlock that everybody thought they would be
when the season began. There's just something missing there right.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Now for the Dodgers that was wild the filly. So
let's go there for a minute, because o'tani is doing something, Ruthie,
and I mean, I just feel like that's the only
way you could call it. Fifty strikeouts, fifty homers in
the season. Lou you're the nostal, You're the history guy.
I don't think I've heard that stat uttered since the Ruth,

(07:27):
that guy named Babe Ruth.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Right, You're probably right. I don't think there was anybody
in between who's done this. Obviously, you've know my feelings
on the What I think is just not a fair
comparison between Shone o'tanni, who's a fantastic player, fantastic hitter
because he doesn't play in the field, and Babe Ruth.

(07:50):
Babe Ruth is the greatest team player in any sport
in my opinion, of all time. And but yeah, what
Otani's done it great. I'm sure that I don't know
if the Dodgers are playing possum with him, how he's
going to be used in the playoffs. Almost the Dodgers
have just, you know, just floated through the regular season.

(08:14):
But you know, there there are two games ahead of Padres,
and if the Padres had won a couple of more
games against them when the Dodgers swept them a couple
of couple of weeks ago, things would be different. But
we'll see if the Dodgers could turn it on and off.
I'm stilling to believe that that's not gonna happen. I'm

(08:35):
not saying that they can't win the World Series. I'm
not saying that, but it's not going to be the
layup that everybody thought when the season began.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
No, no, it won't. And you know, repeating is not easy.
I mean, look, the Yanks were very fortunate to have
that run, but repeating is very difficult. And it's one
of those things where a team that's on the defense
of a championship, they just have not looked like a
title defender right now.

Speaker 1 (09:06):
But they really haven't. And again, they have back end
issues with their bullpen, as just about every major league
team does, and I think it goes back to ahead.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Oh my god, lo back end issues. Has a ten
to one Yankee game end up a ten to nine
Yankee game. I mean, that's a problem right there.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
It is, No, there's no doubt about it. And it's
not a Yankee issue. It's all these teams. Nothing, no
only is safe anymore. And I think it look at
the Mets did last night and the midst of this
going in they were going to pitch homes and they
didn't say how they were gonna split up, but they
took homes out after four effective innings at fifty three pitches.

(09:47):
And they brought in Seimaniyah, who had it been effective lately,
had a bullpen and he pitched five effective innings that
saved Mets. Bullpen. Get done this big time. It's it's
wide open.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Alex Well, yeah, I know that the Mets being the Padres,
the way they did it was a little surprising because,
let's face it, they have just lost eight in a
row and they look like they're just in a slog.
You've been saying they're not hitting, and I mean, I
don't want to put all the blame on Helsley. I
think that's wrong, but apparently he's he's been a reason
why some of this stuff's been.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Yeah, well it's not Believe me, it's way past Helsley's.
This is a fault. But they got wrong. Hey, I said,
this is fantastic, but obviously he uh, he hasn't he
hasn't pitched. Well, I think a little bit, and said, now,
I don't they They can't chance them right now in

(10:45):
any kind of clutch situation. They just can't. You can
almost see the look of fear on the on the
guy's face, which is not good. I don't know if
he's one of these guys who can't play under the
bright lights of New York. And yes, playing in New
York is different than playing in Saint Louis or playing
in Minnesota or playing in Milwaukee. It's different. You have

(11:09):
so many eyes of the media and the fans looking
down upon you. But you don't know that until you
get a guy you know. You know ten years ago
the Mets got Sess for this. He didn't care. He
put the team on his back end. They got all
the way to Game five of the World Series. But
mostly he was.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Part of that nine home run memorable game against Philly.
I'll still never forget that to this day.

Speaker 1 (11:31):
That was. Yeah. I mean, you have guys like that,
but mostly in the trade deadline, you have guys who
really don't make contributions.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Now he's done, since he got traded up to New York.
I don't know what he's done for the Mets. Y.

Speaker 1 (11:45):
No, that's another good point. Mullins hasn't hasn't done anything.
But the Phillies were able to get Harrison Vader, who
has been fantastic for them, and and Dorin who they
got the best relief pitcher, and they have won the
control for two years. And that the fully bullpen was

(12:07):
not in good shade. Once they got Durant from Minnesota,
he rectified that, and a couple of weeks ago, I said,
I'm not sure if the Phillies could win with that
with Wheeler being out until next year. I'm gonna have
to take that back. They might be able to do it,
especially they're closing in on the best record in the
National League and we'll have home could have a chance

(12:29):
that home field, you know, throughout the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Well, Phillies, And I tell you that Schwarber All Star
Game is what he needed. That guy's been hitting NonStop
and it's probably electric electrified the whole lineup. I mean,
it's just been a different Philly team coming out of
the break. And I know everybody said the Phillies needed
that break to begin with, so what what a turnaround? Now?
I just got the cub score they've been leading, and

(12:53):
I'm reminded former Yankee and former cub who won the
World Series with the Cubbies. And Rizzo retiring and maybe
we'll get to see him at the bakery now there, Louis.

Speaker 1 (13:07):
Yeah, I don't know. It looks like he signed on
with the Cubs as an ambassador. I know he was
at the Yankee game with his wife and his kid
last week. But then a couple of days later, after
he retired and the Cub signed him as an ambassador,
he was he was in the outfield bleachers having to
be with all those loyal Cup fans.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Well, did you see that jersey that's designed by I
think all the kids are something that have been It's
an emotional jersey that that was signed by all the
kids at the at one of the local hospitals. And
you know that foundation he has is really special as well.

Speaker 1 (13:39):
Well. He had he overcame cancer when he was in
the Red Sox organization and he had a He had
a fine career and you know he'll always be part
of the Cub team that broke the one hundred and
eight year streak. The final out he recorded the final
hour on to throw from from third and uh, that's history.

Speaker 2 (14:03):
Being of history. And I gotta make this plug here.
You know what I'm wearing right now as we talk,
the CC Sabbatia Hall of Fame jersey, which I got
from Fanatics thanks to my link. So there you go.
If you want that jersey, you can also get the
the link in my in the description below, But hey
got an honor CEC. I have my g or one

(14:24):
as well. Another couple of Hall of famers there for
the Yankees. Uh, you know, I've been talking about Rizzo
and the Hall of Fame. I don't know. He's borderline,
isn't he?

Speaker 1 (14:33):
But he could make He's not Alex. I love him
as a player. He's not. He's not borderline. He's not
a Hall of Fame. He's not. He's very good. There'll
be a great cub. They'll put him in Hillock. He'll
come to the uh you know, the ten year anniversary
of well, it's already it's going to be ten years
next year. I'm sure I'm gonna have something. He'll be

(14:54):
on all those things. But he's he was a very
good ball player and outstanding fielder. But we gotta we
gotta start making the Hall of Fame more difficult to
get in like it used to be. We're putting too
many guys in who are just borderline.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
Well, and I'll tell you this much, Uh that the
ten year unniversary to me, and the more emotional they
was actually seeing them raise the banner in twenty seventeen,
that was really special. Because who knew we'd see that
happening in our lifetime.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
Louis Well again, everybody thought after they first of all,
there's no way that street should still be going, because
there's no way the Indians should have blown that three
to one lead in games. But you know that things said.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
The mismanagement, we're talking about the mismagement of Madden during
that whole.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
That's right, they won despite they wont despite Madden's very
let's say, shaky managing, uh down down the stretch. But
the thing is, everybody thought the Cubs were gonna win
at least one more and they didn't. And you know so,

(16:10):
but the baseball.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Now we've seen we know, we saw the Yankees' core
breakup after the one World Series. I think the Cubs
breakup was a little more tough to watch because it
just did not end well for anybody. Right, Madden had
that terrible party always down the road by as leaves
like that. That's just looked ugly, you know, very.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Very very true. And usually break breakups in anything, whether
therefore World Series championship teams, in relationships and whatever, in
losing losing a job, usually they don't go very well.
So uh yeah, so again the Cubs. They have. Cubs
have a fine team. Now they can they can go

(16:56):
to the World Series this year. As is any of
twelve that that will that eventually will make it.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
Well, we'll have to see about that. And yet twelve
teams here. You know, I still find the Tigers to
be very fascinating because here's a team that had their
losing streaks and yet they're still up. I mean, they're
dominating the AO Central and it's just it's one of
the funniest things in the whole league is how they've
been able to maintain that big lead while losing.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
Well, they were up fourteen. They're gonna win a division.
They knew they were gonna win a division two months ago.
But the lead has gone from fourteen or fourteen and
a half down to five and a half right now.
They're not going to blow the division. But uh, I
don't know if they have they have the picture and
to reach Strubel obviously to carry him to a World Series.

(17:48):
I don't know if they have that the dominant hitter
that I think they could put him on his back
to get to get them through a number of playoff rounds.
But well, you know, we'll have to wait until they
have a great manager and fit in a J. Hinch.
And uh, but if the Texas Rangers get in, Bruce

(18:10):
Boch is a difference maker. And uh, if the Rangers
get in.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Well how does that look? Because obviously the Yanks I
had they were almost competing with the Rangers for that
final spot. Now they've pretty much got themselves back up
to number one. But then you look at that third
one and what is the Guardians? Although they've been dropping
it off a bit, I well know.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
The Guardians of once. The Guardians have won ten out
of eleven. Again they were they've lost ten in a row,
then they went on a long streak, then they then
they lost like seven out of nine, and now they've
won ten out of eleven. I think there are two
and a half games out. Can they make it? I guess?
I mean who knows nowadays? I mean, uh, the way
that this has been the most bizarre baseball season that

(18:56):
I that I could remember.

Speaker 2 (18:58):
Well, right, because the Blue Jays are five I see
here in.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
The Remember the blue Jays are five, but they're really
six because even if by some chance the Yankees catch
them and they finished in a tie, the Blue Jays
get the tie breaker, but I don't think the Yankees
are gonna make them five games, even though the next
four games are against the Twins and and the White
Sox and then I don't know where they come home

(19:22):
and they play who they play? They play, Oh, they
play the Orioles this weekend and next weekend. So I
mean the Yankee schedule, and they've taken advantage of the schedule.
Credit to them. They're in good shape. I mean they're
they're in uh so, so uh we'll see and two

(19:44):
weeks from yesterday we'll we'll see the Wildcod Round. So
it's here, Alex, Yeah, no, only isn't here.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
I have to give a shout out to the Banana
Sabana Bananas for selling out Yank Stateum. And this is
a group that started in the smaller stadium obviously didn't
really have many ticket sales. Now they're touring ballparks Yankee
Stadium and I know someone like, well, are you okay
with them turning Yankee Stitium into a circus? Blah blah blah,
And you know, then the question is this is what
George seimern I would have wanted. Look, it's a new era.

(20:19):
I love what they're doing. I think they're keeping fans
engaged with baseball in a different way.

Speaker 1 (20:23):
Well, that's that's true. And I'm sure the Yankees like
to check that. The Savannah Bananas wrote out to play
at Yankee Stadium. I'm sure mister Steinbrenner were like that too.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
There's like the Rays and their old deal there with
with you know, right using Steinburner Field. So it's been
a it's been an odd year, including that whole tour
has been actually a sidebar to the whole year because
everything where they go, they bring out all these MLB legends.
I'm sure you've been seeing that.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Yeah, yeah, no, they have. It's a it's very interesting
to be sure.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
All right, I know you would have an NFL. I
know people want to listen to your take on the NFL.
We were watching Russell Wilson throwing down the field a
couple of times and hit neighbors, hit Robinson, who last
year couldn't really make a catch. Now he's making that
amazing catch for Wilson, but then they let him run

(21:22):
all over him. It's just it's one of these things
where it's not one thing, it's the other. Right now,
with the Giants.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
Well, I gotta say one thing. I never thought that
Russell Wilson could play game like he played on Sunday.
I mean had a throwback from six seven years ago
when he was at the height of his powers. I mean,
he threw some amazing passes, some beautifully time passes and
like you said to one Del Robinson with twenty five

(21:50):
seconds to go to elite neighbors, which I thought put
the Giants ahead. In the old days, it would have.
But now in this era of Aget mac megalleg field
goal kickers who can kick from sixty four yards and
sixty yards, the game isn't over. And uh, I don't

(22:12):
like the new NFL kickoff rules. Putting ball putting kickoffs,
you know, at the thirty five yard line something, depending
on where it is. Sometimes it's at the twenty, sometimes
it's at the thirty five. Alex thirty you put, you
go to the thirty five yard line and you did
what like Dallas did the other day and Greg Olsen
nailed it. The Giants are playing too soft. They're playing

(22:36):
too soft. One pass they hit the tight end for
that big play. It was right on the right on
the Cowboys star which was at midfield, and uh, Aubrey
has a Brandon Orby has a chance to make it
from sixty seven yards. He's that great. And uh, the

(22:58):
Giants lost that game because they allowed that sixty four
yardfield goal Atti and go to overtime. We have a
I don't want to say this is a problem, but
these the Jets got beat by a sixty yardfield goal
last week, which pissed me off. This week, obviously, they
got overrun by a Bills team that is.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Just, you know, three levels above that, and that field
goal reminded me of how they lost in the Broncos
last year.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
Yeah, absolutely so. And last week the Giants and Russell
Wilson looked like he was washed up. Giants can't do
anything offensively. When you score thirty seven points, you gotta
win the game. You can't. When you score thirty two points,
like the Jets did last week, you gotta win the game.
That's only the eighth time in Jet history in the

(23:50):
sixty four year history of New York Jets that they
scored thirty two points and loss. Very frustrating. Obviously, the
g Ain't situation is different because they had coach and
Jeril manager in their third year, the Jets coach and
Geral manager in their second game. But they gotta do something,

(24:12):
and I'm in general they're gonna do as we talked
about it last year. I think they're gonna do something
with the field goal. I don't know if it's bringing in.
They're not gonna change the point value of a field
goal of depending on where you kick it from. I
think they're going to narrow the goal post. I really
believe that's gonna happen within the next five years.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
I really be The goal posts are too wide right now.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
Yeah, No, I think you're gonna see something like maybe
like Arena League sized goal posts because these guys are
just too good. A quick history lesson here. Jan Stenerude
was the first kicker to make the Pro Football Hall
of Fame. He played for the Super Bowl champion Kansas
City Chiefs in nineteen, the nineteen sixty nine champions, and

(25:00):
later played for the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers.
He was considered the greatest kicker in the history of
the league. When he made the Hall of Fame. His
success rate was sixty two point five. He was successful
sixty two percent of the time. Now you look at
a kid like Cameron Dicker, which half of NFL fans

(25:23):
don't even know who the heck he is the kicker
for the Los Angeles Chargers. The other night he kicked
the field goal Alex. He's ninety five out of one
hundred and one in his career, he's kicking field goals
at over ninety four percent. So Jon stener Rude wouldn't
even make a practice squad in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
The kickers are on steroids or something like that.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
Well, obviously they're stronger, they're better athletes. There's there's more
specialized you gotta remember too. And this was not in
center Root's case, but a lot of kickers in the
old days play other positions and it's it's but it's not.
I don't think it's entertaining. You know, you complete one

(26:10):
twenty two yard pass and somebody's kicking a fifty eight
yard field goal. I just you know, I don't think
that's entertaining. And I think the NFL will do something
about it. I really, and you know me, I am
not one for major rule changes, but this one, I
think what might be.

Speaker 2 (26:27):
For that Aubrey kicker, I mean, he made one from
the logo. I don't know how many people can do that.
It's just I thought he was gonna miss it. It's
just straight through the uprights. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
No. And and Aubrey in a preseason game this year,
I believe it was in Cleveland, made a seventy yard
field goal. The seventy yard field goal is coming, Alex,
It's coming. It might come this week. That's how close
we are, all right.

Speaker 2 (26:55):
Well, another thing that's coming this week if you haven't
heard already, and I don't just touched on, but justin
Fields will not be, you know, making the start. It'll
be Tyrod Taylor. And we all know that name. He's
been in the Tristaid area. Now now there'll be thirty
third team he plays with the Tristaid area. But I'm

(27:15):
curious to see how that system works. I really like Tyrod.
I think is a great quarterback, even if he's gotten older.
Might be the jolt that the Jets need right now.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
Well, I mean, Fields play a fantastic game in Game one.
He really didn't maybe as good a game as he
ever play. Last week he was they had no chance.
They only ran the they only ran forty seven snaps
in the whole game offensively, they only had the ball
for twenty one minutes. They were overrun by a team
that is light years better than them and his Super

(27:45):
Bowl playoff championship level ready in the Buffalo Bills. You
can make the argument that Josh Allen has court Patrick
Mahomes as the best player in the league. That's legitimate
argum mint. But the Jets, howes, obviously have a lot
of work to do, and I don't know what the

(28:06):
coaching staff and and Darren Moochie's going to do. They
need a receiver, they're short of a receiver they need
on the back end. Really, the only defensive back that
doing anything is Sauce Gardner. They need safety men. So
this off, this is not as good a roster as

(28:28):
it was two years ago or even the beginning of
last year. But Tyrod Taylor, yeah he's a career back up.
He started, He's made the playoffs. Yeah they could. It's
been than starting Zach Wilson, that's for sure. And unfortunately

(28:50):
the kid missing Field's missing action hurts his development with
the Jets. As Jets try to put their program together,
I was already disappointed at Jets, who are super aggressive
the week before, in super physical week before. We're on
the receiving end of all the physicality last week. So

(29:11):
so they play another physical team this week at Tampa.
And let me say one thing about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
I liked their team very much. And Baker Mayfield. You know,
people like to criticize him, he's not a top level quarterback. Well, Alex,
let me tell you one thing. The kid's a tremendous
competitor and he's a very, very good quarterback, and that

(29:34):
he could lead them to the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (29:36):
And were we not gushing about him last year? I
remember we were both like aw that he came back
and was so strong for Tampa last year.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
Yeah, and it's true, and we weren't dushing about him
last year. And the guy, the guy took a physical
being the other night. He's not afraid, he's not take
afraid to take a risk. He could be a Super
Bowl championship quarterback. It doesn't mean that he's on the
level of Mahomes or Herbert or Allen or Jalen Hurts

(30:09):
or Burrow. Unfortunately Burrow has another terrible injury. But I
love Mayfield. I like the Tampa Bay team very much.
I really do. I think they have a chance if
outside of the quote unquote the real contenders they had
the next.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
One night because they played the Commanders pretty well in
that postseason game. They didn't win, but they had a
good showing against them. I think I like them.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
I think I think they have good receivers. They can
run the ball. Irving's a good runner, They're physical, and
like I said, I'm not into prediction making, but have
a feeling that after about four thirty on on Sunday afternoon,
gents'll b owen three.

Speaker 2 (30:53):
All right, let me ask you this tell us about
the dichotomy of Tom Brady going from the broadcast booth
to then Vegas. I mean, is there some restrictions yet?
I don't know exactly the dichotomy of all this, How
he can still own a team, even minority, while being
on the air.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
Well going into the NFL there's no restrictions and the
Raiders or Brady did nothing wrong. I think it's ridiculous.
I think, you know, it's the quote unquote, it's a
bad look. Yeah, it's a bad look. I just think
it's it's just it's a it sets a very bad precedent.
He should not be allowed to go in into the

(31:33):
coaches booth, or if he wants to go on the
coaches booth, he should forfeit his NFL Sunday First first
team analyst job to somebody else. So I think it's
a bad look, I really do. I think it's not right.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
It's it's it's all over the place, a mess, and
I got it. It's being a broadcast. I gotta give
a credit to Joe Davis, who can go from calling
an NFL game Sunday to calling Otani's fiftieth homer last night.
The guy is versatile, and you know, I know he
can rub people the wrong way with his sort of
very rigid way he talks. But he's he's a you know,

(32:15):
his versatility's got to be complimented.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Oh, he's a basketball announcer, he's a football announcer, he's
a baseball announcer. He's okay, he's okay. I you know,
I don't think anybody's going to uh uh, he's not
gonna forget make anybody forget Vince Scully. Nobody is obviously
Vin Scully's at the top of the old time game.
But uh yeah, he's okay.

Speaker 2 (32:40):
All right, let me let's go back to the gridiron though,
on the field, because we see Burrow out and this
kid has had the toughest luck of all these quarterbacks
that have been, you know, in their elite in the
elite class, he's had the toughest time, I mean again,
and the Bengals have to wonder where they're gonna.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
Go next, no doubt. I mean, they have a decent
backup in Jake Browning. He's a high risk guy. I mean,
he'll get you up and down the field a little
bit like Jameis Winston. You know, he'll throw, you know,
he'll take some chances which end up in turnovers. But

(33:23):
I feel sorry for Burrow. He's in the prime of
his physical career and he's gonna miss another chunk of
the season. Who knows if he can come back in
middle of December and play those last couple of games.
Who knows where the Bengals are going to be. But
you look at the quarterbacks. Alex Burrow out this week,
Justin Fields out this week, Brock Purty out this week,

(33:46):
JJ McCarthy out this week, Jaden Daniels out this week.
That's why you see those horrible roughing the passer penalties,
and I saw four on Sunday one in the Jet game, one,
the Giant game, one in the Philadelphia Kansas City game,
one in the Minnesota Atlanta game on Sunday night. That Alex,

(34:09):
when I was your age, there'd be the flags would
still be in the pocket of these officials. But I
just went down the list of the quarterbacks being hurt.
And without good quarterback play, the game sucks. And that's
why the officials throw the flag so quickly. Without quarterbacks,

(34:30):
you don't you really don't have a competitive game. And
that's why these these quarterbacks are are protected.

Speaker 2 (34:40):
Well, yeah, I didn't realize there was that many that
are not playing this week, and that's just that's not
a good look for the NFL either though, right, I mean,
you got to have some of these guys playing.

Speaker 1 (34:49):
I mean, I don't know what the NFL could do.
They've made the game. They're so aware of health in
the game, even though they allow stupid things like the
tush push to stay and the Eagles are are moving
before the tush push and it's hard to see them
with they're moving illegally because the players all bunched up together.

(35:11):
But the league is doing everything to keep the players
as healthy as possible. It's a collusion sport. I don't
know what they can do, Alex, I really don't. But losing.
Just think it's week three and one, two, three, four, five,
six starting quarterbacks are not playing this week. Who's gonna

(35:31):
get hurt on on Sunday or Monday.

Speaker 2 (35:36):
And beat the Steelers. So there are a few games
that we were tracking. While I saw the Seahawks beat
the Steelers. A little bit of a surprise there.

Speaker 1 (35:44):
I mean, you know, did you did you see the
play that turned to the round?

Speaker 2 (35:48):
I don't think we cut that one on Sunday?

Speaker 1 (35:51):
All right, Well, Settle just scored and they kicked off
and the kick return misplayed it. It grazed off his
left shoulder, pad, helmet and fingers and rolled into the
end zone. Alex, that's a live ball. He never went

(36:13):
back to retrieve it. One of the special teams for
Seattle jumped on it. Touchdown. Seattle turned the game right around.
Seattle's good. They're very good. They could win that division,
they could win the NFC West. They got a good defense.
They're good, you know.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
And the other thing, you know, the other thing I'm
thinking of is is just a there hasn't been. Maybe
I'm not following it closely, but has there been a
standout game to you yet? I guess the Chiefs going
on in too is the storyline. I mean, of all
these storylines, that's the one that resonates most because they're
the Chiefs and oh my god, what's wrong with Mahomes?

Speaker 1 (36:56):
That's the question? Now, Well, it's funny you get that
you bring up the Chiefs because I was going to
talk about them a couple of seconds ago. By the way,
the two best games just to watch as a fan
this year Week one with Jets, Steelers and we even
though both of our both New York teams lost, and
week to His Cowboys and Giants, they were the two

(37:18):
best teams to walk if you're if you're just an
NFL fan with sitting on the couch just watching the game,
those were the two best games so far, even though
both the Jets and Giants did lose. What's wrong with
the Chiefs, Alex Alex. They have major offensive problems, they
have no skill position players, Xavier Worthy as a dislocated shoulder.

(37:41):
Obviously this is I would be shocked if this is
not the last year for Kelsey. Their offensive line is shaky.
Their running game Isaiah Pacheco looks like he's slowed down
a bit. Uh Rashid rice Is are suspended for the
first six games. If you got suspended more. But that's
neither here nor there. And as great as Mahomes is,

(38:05):
he needs some help. Ah, they're in trouble. They were
in a little bit of trouble. I want to see
how they bounced back.

Speaker 2 (38:15):
And ken they bounced back against the Giants who looked
like they were on the doorstep of winning Sunday. So
maybe they opened that door, you know. And I hate
these though in two years because I get teased a
little bit. Right, Oh my god, wherehere were we at
all in two in two thousand and seven o eight, Well,
they beat Washington and the rest is history. Right, Yeah,
it makes me hopeful a little bit.

Speaker 1 (38:35):
Yeah, yeah, I know, but uh, that was a different
year of my son.

Speaker 2 (38:42):
And but the defense here should be as good as
that giant defense, if not a little less. But the
way they were characterized as this big defensive line in
this big you know ed dresser of duel Car, I mean,
they didn't look like the defense that everybody thought they
were going to be going into the ear. That's the
most I think we were ranked.

Speaker 1 (39:01):
Actually, all right, again, how many NFL games has Abdukara played? Two?
He's gonna be fine. The thing is, you know they
were run on a little bit, and uh, you know,
it'll take a little time.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
Now. I have some flashes where they sacked za Dak.
I thought those are some good moments there where they
jumped on him. But then you know, and I still
want more from Burns. That's the guy I really think
about because he's really he's got the talent. He's just
got to make the tackle.

Speaker 1 (39:37):
Well, he's a talented guy and he's had a very
good career. Burns has now Alex I asked you this
question was Sunday night Russell Wilson performance a throwback of
five years ago? Was that a one time thing? Or
was what we saw the first week where he was terrible?
He had no time to throw against water.

Speaker 2 (39:58):
I think he's going to be very comfortab with dark
coming in and every other every third down to try
and get that for I think he's gonna be very
comfortable in that system and that can help Russell Wilson thrive.

Speaker 1 (40:09):
So I asked you this Russell Wilson. He's not gonna
throw of one to fifty ods every week like he
did last week. But come to the NFL trade deadline,
which I think is is right after Game seven or
eight something like that. I actually have to look up
to date this year. Would they with the Giants trade

(40:31):
Russell Wilson to one of these teams that have an
injured quarterback who are who are a contender? Would they
trade Russell Wilson in Minnesota? By the way, Minnesota should
have never let Donald go, but that was their business.

Speaker 2 (40:47):
Now they know, And that's that's tough with McCarthy because,
as you know, I've loved him since the Michigan days
and everybody's like, well, Pennic's got him this time. Listen,
the guy is a world chap A, a NCAA title
over Hendick. So whatever happens to the NFL in that
regards is, it is what it is. JJ McCarthy will
be fine in the Viking system, I think, But.

Speaker 1 (41:09):
Well I have to get over that ankle injury first,
so so we'll see. But I mean, the will the
Giants dangle Russell Wilson out they're at the trade deadline
that's a possible waity.

Speaker 2 (41:20):
Why haven't we seen Winston? What's up with that? That's
what I'm trying to put.

Speaker 1 (41:23):
Well, I mean, obviously they've designated their first and second
string quarterback and and Jameis Winston. Will they dangled Jameis
Winston at the trade deadline, Alex. Other quarterbacks are gonna
get hurt between now and the trade deadline. We know it.
It's it's the nature. It's the nature of the sport.
But how about hats off to Daniel Jones. The Indianapolis

(41:46):
Colts have not punted this year, Alex. They have not punted.

Speaker 2 (41:51):
It's almost like, what if you gave Jones and Manning
and sa Quon an offensive line? How different things will
be in New York right now?

Speaker 1 (42:00):
Well, I mean, obviously he's thriving these first two weeks.
First two weeks don't mean you know, he's gonna make
the Hall of Fame, but he has been an offensive
druggeraut for the Colts at the quarterback position.

Speaker 2 (42:19):
So I mean, so we broke a stroke that has
a strike, you know, a street that has been broken
or hasn't been done since twenty thirteen. I mean, that's
really to not have an opening day win since twenty
thirteen is quite an incredible thing there. So we want
to turn around. And you know, Jones looks like almost

(42:40):
like an MVP caliber quarterback right now, which we didn't
see in New York. Although we all know he was athletic.
It's just he had talent.

Speaker 1 (42:47):
We know he could throw the ball. Good for him.
We'll see how long it lasts, all right.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
The other team I'm looking forward to seeing more of
is what the Chargers do, because obviously I'm a hardball
guy and I love seeing the Harbor Herbert connection working.
I mean, but didn't think they beat the Chiefs, but
now they're two to zero. Maybe the real deal talk.
And also Drake May I want to cover him too,
because that kid. I knew he was gonna be something

(43:13):
special last year. I think he's been growing to his
own this year and give the Bills a run for
their money. But let's start with Herbert and Harbor.

Speaker 1 (43:21):
Well, you know, Harbor is an excellent coach. We know
that he coached an NCAA championship team at Michigan. He
in a likelihood, will get the Charges to the Super
Bowl in the next couple of years. If not this year.
They have an excellent defense. They did suffer an injury
on Monday night with Khalil Mack. I think they they

(43:41):
put him on the injured reserve list and so he'll
miss at least four games, I assume. But one of
the key things that the Charges have done, besides having
a great defense and a great quarterback, they brought somebody
back that they let go last year and he played

(44:02):
for the Bears last year, but he's back, and that's
Keenan Allen, who seems to have great chemistry with Justin Herbert.
The Charges are good and they come into MetLife Staateum
and play the Giants after Kansas City leaves on Sunday night,
so you can get an up close, in personal look

(44:24):
at the Los Angeles Charges on September twenty eighth. They're
very good. Alan.

Speaker 2 (44:29):
If I didn't have other obligations, I would definitely want
to be there to see that, especially because Harbaugh, I mean,
just an affinity for the guy really dating back to
the Michigan days. So we'll see what he does. What
they come in with a couple weeks from now, and
I hope he was like, why do you have an
infinity with him? He got suspended. He got this because

(44:51):
he's a good coach. I don't care about the whatever.
He's a coach. And I also feel bad Jeron Moore
has been dealing with the backlash of that too up
in Michigan because he was, uh, he was a great
stand in when he was having the fill in for
for Harvard at the time.

Speaker 1 (45:06):
Yeah, well, Harvard doesn't have to worry about the ten
year suspension that he got from from college football because
he's never gonna coach in college again. He'll be coaching
in the proach for the rest of his career, probably
with the Chargers. And he's a great coach. And uh,
you know, I think they I think they're going I

(45:27):
think they might break the nine year streak of the
Chiefs winning the AFC West. So we'll see what Week
three brings this week. But one last thing before we go. Uh,
Eddie Jockman passed away the other night, the legendary goalie
for the New York Rangers. He's a Hall of Famer.

(45:50):
He's in the Hall of Fame. I don't know. And
I watched him play his entire career and I was
a big Eddie Jockman fan. Remember when I saw watching
there was only six teams, so we didn't have this
choice of so many teams to follow and to watch.
He was part of a Ranger team that went to

(46:13):
the finals once. They had great players, outstanding players in
the late sixties in the early seventies, they never did
the They never did the job in the postseason. Jockin
was not a great postseason goalie. I remember there's one
game inst the Chicago Black Books at home where he

(46:34):
led in a roller from mid ice. But Eddie Jockmin
was an outstanding goalie and he was part of a
Ranger team that made hockey big in New York, and
obviously it led to why hockey is big and while
we have three teams in the New York metropolitan area

(46:57):
to follow. So I just want to give Eddie Jackman,
at the age of eighty six a little props. He
won the Vesna Trophy. He was part of a Ranger
team that was very entertaining to watch. They just ran
into Bobby Orr and phill Esposito in the Boston Bruins
and then a little bit after that the Broad Street Bully,

(47:17):
so they couldn't handle Because the Rangers were more of
a finesse team other than a physical team, even though
everybody tried to tell Amiel Francis, you had to tough
one up the Ranges a little bit. And Amil Francis
was a general manager and president and coach of the
Rangers at various times who helped put that team together
and with them with the New Garden in sixty eight,

(47:39):
when Madison Square Gone opened in February sixty eight, all
came together and one of the reasons why I believe
in New York is a great hockey area. The New York,
New Jersey metropolitan area is a great hockey area. Eddie
Jockerman Rettel, John Rettel, royerl Bert Dale, Ralph, all those guys,

(47:59):
there was so many on that team. No, they never
went far. They will playoff flops most most of the time,
but they helped. They helped developed why we all love
hockey in the New York, New Jersey metropolitan area. And
looking forward with hockey training camps opening up tomorrow, somebody
think might have opened up today, looking forward to getting

(48:22):
back into the hockey season.

Speaker 2 (48:23):
Well before that, the Cubs, with their win today are
in the playoffs, so that's a major deal that'll be
fun to watch them back in October, so that should
be fun. And one last thing before we go, and
it said to lose any jocumane on the heels of
one hundredth anniversary. All these teams coming out with new threads,
as they say, for one hundred years, so it should

(48:44):
be fun to watch that on the ice. But I
want to give a quick shout out to t U
n L for having me out for an event featuring
Key Cunningham on Monday night and a couple other NBA
guys including Pat Bev. I mean you saw the pictures.
That was pretty cool to be there front center with
these guys.

Speaker 1 (49:05):
You are hobnobbing with the beautiful people, Alex Garrett as always.

Speaker 2 (49:12):
So I want to give it a little shout out
there all right, Lou, always a pleasure. Glad we were
able to connect this week, and uh, you know, just
we gotta keep praying for each other. Base life is
bigger than sports, as we found out, and just got
to keep on that awareness as we enjoyed this the
games we love.

Speaker 1 (49:31):
Absolutely, Alex, Thank you and we'll do this again next week.
Thank you, appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (49:38):
