Speaker 1 (00:02):
Here's your host, Alex Dearrek.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
All right, well, I've been mentioning today on the one
that got Alex Network. Gota have friends, I'd have fans,
I'd have commentators. Well, of course we cannot leave this
week without talking to mister Terminello's take and Lou. We
were waiting together to see how this week would shape up.
And Uh, as a Yankee fan, I'm pretty happy. But
as an overall baseball fan, I actually thought this was
(00:27):
the strongest three games of a week. I mean, yeah,
the Dodgers got to two and oh, but this is
the strongest wild Card series we've had in a while.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Alex, thank you for having me. As always, You're right,
it was of excellent three days of watching major League baseball.
I watched about every pitch of every game, and uh
uh yeah, it was. It was. It was a good
week for major League baseball. I would say, I mean,
(00:59):
some of the teams that that are in the playoffs,
I don't know if they were really playoff teams, but
the games themselves were compelling, and I think that's a
good thing for major League Baseball. Usually you don't get
three out of four series that go to three games
and you know that, you know the deciding game, you know,
(01:23):
anything can happen. And I think that that drew a
lot of interest from not only the fans of the teams,
but just baseball fans in general. I mean, obviously I
had no rooting interests because my metso were eliminated before this,
you know, before the players didn't make it. But I watched.
(01:43):
I watched ninety nine percent of every game, So it
was it was compelling.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
It was great, and I mean, yeah, I really I
like the way they stay. They base it out too.
I mean, I do feel like they've taken on this
football kind of format where every game is back to back,
and then that makes even more fun.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah, that's that's true. And none of these games really
started late. There was no games that started at ten
forty five or eleven o'clock on the West coast, you know,
eleven o'clock Eastern time. So that was good. Like I said,
I thought it was a good week for Major League Baseball.
A lot of excitement and ironically, Alex, this is the
(02:32):
fourth year of this expanded playoff with the six teams
in each league and in the sixteen series. The first
fifteen series, the team that won Game one, won the
two out of three series. The first team not to
win the first game and win the series was the
(02:56):
game last night, the Yankee Red Sox Red Sox game.
So that's an interesting stat. Fifteen and one for the
game one winner in the sixteen series and the Yankees
broke that's a streak last night behind a brilliant, brilliant
performance by the rookie Cam Schlittler. Brilliant performance.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Now we all know in the New York area about him.
I mean, look, since he came up, he's been the
call above the year for the Yankees. He's been solid
every start. And by the way, yeah he had twelve
k's last night, but that's ninety two combined regular and
postseason and he've only started in June or July. That's impressive.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Well, the thing is, this is the best I've seen
him pitch. I don't know if this is what we're
gonna see. Obviously, not going to seek performances like this
on a consistent basis, But Alex he's only the second
guy in the history of Major League Baseball to strike
out twelve and walk none. The only other guy was
Tom sever In a nineteen seventy three National Championship Series
(03:59):
against the Big Machine. But he was tremendous last night.
I mean, I really didn't know what to expect last night. Obviously,
the Yankees are much better than the Red Sox. This
is not a classic Red Sox team. The Red Sox,
you know, kind of overachieved. Nobody expected them to to
(04:19):
make the playoffs this year. I think there are a
couple of years away. But they obviously have a lot
of good young players, and they missed Roman Anthony. But
they weren't going to beat the Yankees. But again they could.
I mean a couple of things went against against them.
In the fourth inning their fault, you know, obviously the
(04:42):
ground ball that wasn't played by by a low costing
two runs. But once the Yankees one had four nothing,
and the way Schlitler was pitching, and I would have
sent them out to the for the ninth Alex, I
mean I would have. I mean, he was he threw
a seven pitch eighth inning, and I would have sent
(05:03):
him out for the ninth inning. I really would have.
The kid deserved it, and uh yeah, it was a
brilliant pitching performance. So yeah, I mean I guess the ninth.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
But I'll tell you one thing that Boone did learn
is and look, I also think Freed was done at
that point. He was taken out, But I think he
learned to stick with his guys as long as he can.
That's kind of what the lesson was for Boone this week.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Well, I think after Tuesday night, and let's face it,
Tuesday night the Yankees, the Yankees lost to a great,
great pitcher. The trade of the year was the Red
Sox getting Garrett Crochet, and they gave up floor to
top ten prospects to get him. Obviously, the White Sox
s knew that, you know, they were after losing one
(05:48):
hundred and twenty one games. By the time we turned
a corner, Crochet, Uh, Crochet might he retired. So they
did the right thing in trading their best trade ship
to had four other prospects, and he's a great I mean,
Crochet in his first really full year as a starter
as a dominant starter, was was tremendous and if it
(06:11):
wasn't for Tarik's struble, he would win the Say Young
Award easily. I was surprised Free came out that he
took him out on Tuesday night Boone did that? Did
surprise me?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (06:26):
Not a surprise that when exists. I can't entirely fault.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Him for that. No, I mean, and again, let's face it,
the Yankee fans have a and the media have a
love hate relationship with Boone. But I don't know if
he'd made that lineup or if it came from, as
we talk on a million times, the analytic department. But
the Yankees advanced, they should have advanced. They're heavily favored
(06:50):
for a road team going into Toronto this weekend.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Really because my body feels nervous heading into the weekend.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Well, I mean obviously nervous any player seriously go to.
But I think I was talking to somebody on Monday
who's in the business, and he asked me who I
think is going to get to the World Series. And
I said, well, I don't like to pick that. I like,
I like to pick series by series. But I said,
if you're gonna force me who's gonna go uh to
(07:22):
the World Series this year, he's gonna force me to
pick that far ahead. I think we're gonna see a
rematch from from from last year Yankees and Dodgers Toronto.
I mean Dante Boschet. You know, the guy was on
his way to hit getting over two hundred hits, and
he's missed the last six weeks and apparently he's still
(07:42):
limping around. I mean, if he doesn't play, that's a
killer for them. And even if he does play, I
don't know how effective he's gonna be. And Chris Bassett
has a back injury. The Yankee should win this series.
The Yankee should win the series now that they got
by the pressure of a two out of three and
Alex made no mistake if the Yankees had lost last night,
(08:04):
and really the Red Sox chance to win was Tuesday night,
and I thought, I know everybody loves Alex Korra. I
thought he overmanaged on Tuesday, and he meant on Wednesday
in Game two, I thought he managed like the Red
Sox were down one game to none and were on
verge of elimination.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Look, you can't burn out a bullpen like that in
only game two of a series.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
No he did. I mean I was surprised. And but
even with that, Eaton should have scored on that play
when Rice couldn't handle Jazz Chisholm's throw. I was shocked
when the ball rolled away and they said he held
up at third. That was a big, big, boneheaded era.
(08:51):
And of course Jared Duran, a very good outfielder. I mean,
just just drift and had that ball pop out of
his glove. And whoever was the official scorer that night,
gave Judge a hit that was unbelievable. But those things.
Course the Red Sox, you know, and uh they during
(09:13):
the season, their fielding wasn't great. But again they're just
they're just they're just starting.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Uh too, people that Roman Anthley was injured. That was
a big part of this too.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
Oh, that was a big part. I mean, the guy,
the guy is a legitimate you know, a legitimate player already.
But the Yankees move on. I think the next I
think the series will be will be good. As you know,
I don't trust Toronto and I think they can get
rattled easy. I That's why I think Game one is
so important. If the Yankees could get in their heads.
(09:48):
And that's been Toronto's issue many times. Uh, when they
get into the playoffs, and they've been to the playoffs
squat for in the last five years, you get into
their head and they're done so and and what the
back end of their bullpen. Hoffman is not to be trusted.
I like the Yankees. I think the Yankees might win
four in this one. Now again, they should be receding
(10:14):
and the Yankees Toronto really shouldn't be playing the Yankees.
Toronto should be playing Detroit, and the Yankees should be
playing Seattle. I don't know why they bracketed. It should
be receding. When you play all year. The two best
teams record wise Umerica League are playing this weekend in
the Yankees in Toronto. I just think that's that's that's
(10:39):
shaky Detroit and Seattle. I like Seattle. Detroit has showed
me nothing. They are baseball's luckiest team. They're so lucky
that you know they won yesterday that a little race,
blowing a fifteen and a half game lead to Cleveland,
and you know, let's say Cleveland and Ice run an
(11:00):
amazing run. But Alex team batting average of two, twenty six,
twenty seven. I mean, how how they get this for you?
Speaker 2 (11:08):
How they You're not going to get there with just
quant with just uh Stephen, Kuan and and uh and Jim,
that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Yeah, no, it's it's it's it's unbelievable so I want to.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
I want to ask you this, well, I want to say,
also the unsung hero of the game. Really, I know
Schlittler was unbelievable, but you know who has he gotten
his flowers? As on Madrasio. He kicked off the scoring
with that nice hit to left, and I call it
the unlikely hit of the night because who'd have thought
he'd come through in that situation.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
It just it wasn't.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
It wasn't in the formula.
Speaker 1 (11:39):
It felt like, well and again uh he uh he
hits left these and that's why he was in the
line up and he rocketed that boy. I think it
was almost one hundred and nine miles per hour. Uh
and and to give to get that all important first
run in the game. Now we all these series, Alex,
(12:00):
it's been a rebirth of pitching. I mean, with the
exception of the Dodgers, who played a Reds team that
was not really a playoff team. I'm sorry, the Mets
two and a half three and a half month slumber
basically got them in. If you include the two playoff losses.
The last twenty three games the Reds were thirteen and ten.
(12:23):
They certainly were in sizzling and I think the Reds
have a good roster, good young roster, and I think
they have good young pitching. So they might be a threat,
depending on what they do in the offseason, to be
a contender to finish first in the always shaky Central Division.
But this was a week of pitching pitching excellence.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Yeah, and I'll tell you the pitching resurgence. Look, you
don't think you don't think they MLB wouldn't want a
Yamamoto Imenega NLCS That would be so cool.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
Well, Alex, I think that's what they're gonna get because, Uh,
I think the Dodgers is gonna go have the toughest
road to get to the World Series. But I think
they're gonna get there. You know, they play in Philly
the first two games, three out of five. Again, it's
a short series, and but I think the Dodgers are
gonna get there. I think they're They're pitching is excellent,
(13:26):
and they're pitching is deeper, much deeper than it was
last year when they have to use it. Even in
the World Series, they have to use one of those openers. Uh,
in the World Series.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
I played in relief pitching relief last year.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Well, I think they're gonna probably utilize him out of
a bullpen. He wasn't on the roster for the wild
Card series, but I think I heard he's going to
be on the roster for this series coming up. And uh,
I think the Dodgers are gonna win. I mean I do. Uh,
it's go five. I think the Dodgers are gonna win.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
I think if the Mets don't lose to Philly four
games there, the Mets probably the Phillies do not have
a solid year all year.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Well, they they I mean they're they're good. I mean
they won a division by thirteen games. I mean, you know, look, Alex,
the Mets were terrible for the last three and a
half months. Terrible. They finished twelve games behind in Miami
Marlins from January. From June thirteen to the end of
(14:32):
the season, the Mets were bad. For whatever reason, they
were bad. And everybody you can talk about a big
money team three hundred and forty million dollars, Yeah, well
that's true, but the big money guys did their job.
Lindor Soto, Alonso, Nemo and Diaz. Now dis can opt out.
(14:54):
Alonso already said he's gonna opt out. We'll see what
happens as we go into the Ufcason. But that's for
the offseason. But for these for these playoffs, you know,
the Cubs and Brewers, fantastic series. I think the Cubs
are gonna beat them. I think the Cubs are gonna
beat the Brewers, and you're gonna have a Cubs and
Dodgers and I think you're gonna have a Yankee and
(15:16):
Seattle championship series. And I think the Yankees and Dodgers
are going to play each other again. But let's see
what happened in this series before he makes so baseball,
it's a good it's it's been a good week for baseball.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Well, you know, one of the thing is anybody you're
talking about this too, and I feel it too, is
last night was really more of a let's stay hopeful
for twenty twenty six, as if the rest of the
postseason would be a bonus. And do you feel like
that should be the approach or I just think it
unfinished business? Now, Yeah, last night was huge and it
chose is what the future can be. But now you
gotta keep.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Going, Oh you you gotta seize the opportunity.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Absolutely, I mean, we could talk about twenty twenty six
all day long. But there's a real chance here, So.
Speaker 1 (16:04):
Absolutely no doubt about it. And by the way, Anthony
Volpi had nice three games. You know, the guy that
takes the punches from the media and the fans. Yeah,
nice three games.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
And by the way, he never deserved any of that,
because if people were observant, they would have known he
got injured in May and has needed cortizone shots. And
that's really what's been the problem here.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Well again, people forget that. He's that these guys are
made out of flesh and blood and not are not robots.
So people forget that, the media forgets that, the fans
forget that, and we all really know what these guys
go through as far as as far as physical, physical injuries.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
So look at the guy that got hit in the faith.
I mean that was unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
Absolutely, yes, David fry. So we take that. Good baseball
weekend coming up, Good football weekend coming up?
Speaker 2 (16:59):
I mean, is not that play reminded me of Polar
when he took that to the face in Philly.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Yes, I do remember that.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
As you mentioned football, Look, the Jets are kind of
a lost cause of the moment. However, the Giants would Dart.
I think people are expecting them on a second second
week in a row here.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Well, they have obviously have a good chance. It's they're
playing a team that uh ish and five and four
and I want to go to and five. They're at
home in New Orleans, so they're gonna They're gonna be
they should be ready to play. I thought last week
Jackson Dart was the reason the Giants won. I'm not
(17:38):
saying that he didn't put not he didn't put up
big numbers, but his presence. I think, just as we
said last week going into the game on when we
were on the podcast last week, that he would juice
up the players, he would juice up the crowd. And and
he did and and he did like I said, I
didn't have a great passing game they but he won
(18:01):
the game and he gave the Giants a little toughness
that they didn't have previously. The Giants have a great
chance to win this week, and then they have a
short work week because they played Philadelphia next Thursday night,
which will be difficult. I mean, hey, the Jets, I
don't know when they're gonna win their first game. They're
(18:23):
playing Dallas this week. Dallas can't stop anybody, but Dallas
can score.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
And I do love know when Glenn running up and
down sideline after that attempt at the black block field
goal into a touch of that was great.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
Yeah, So so we'll again. I don't like the defensive coordinator,
you know, I said that when they hired him back
back in the spring. Looks like they you know, you
have you have good talent on defense. Not I'm not
saying that eighty five Chicago Bears, but it looks like
there's no coordination or communication uh on defense. So so
(19:02):
so we'll see. We'll see what happens. Jets are at home.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
I don't you know, I I but look, even Dallas
is struggle. Mean, people are wondering how they ended in
tie last week. That's not good.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
Well, the thing is, everybody was talking about how great
green Bay is and Dallas is not a Super Bowl team,
and how good green Bay is. How could green Bay
give up forty points if they want to win the
Super Bowl. I'm sure and I'm not saying they can't
win the Super Bowl. But they gave up. They gave up.
They couldn't stop Dak Prescott and see lamb wasn't wasn't
(19:36):
even there. I mean, he's out for the next three
four weeks.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
But every time the Cowboys give up more than twenty
or so, I'm always gonna laugh because I believe it
was Jerry Jones that said, oh he couldn't stop the rush.
Now that those words are hunting him forever now.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
Well, Jerry Jones didn't show up as the general manager.
He didn't get the personnel to show up his defense
and their defense is not good. So so we'll see what
happens Sunday at MetLife. I think Dallas will win all right.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Being a GM, I mean I saw the Rockies fired
their gim, but I was more than a Brett snick
nickerr because obviously that impacts the nl EAST. Him moving
to an advisory role and retiring from the manager spot.
Does that make Atlanta better if they bring in somebody else.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
Well, I mean, it had been rumored that this might
have been his last year. You know, he's sixteen nine
years old. He's been a great manager for the four
team that's always been good. This year, everything went wrong
for the for the Atlanta Braves, you name it, it
went wrong for them. They should be back next year.
In a contending position. They had pitching injuries, and we'll
(20:49):
see who's gonna be the next manager. I know that
the former Cub manager who was there for only one year,
David Ross's arrested in the job.
Speaker 3 (21:00):
And you know, we did a good he did a
nice job for for the Cubs, and uh so, we'll
see who gets that that that job. And Louie's pool
host says that he's interested in Los Angeles Angels job.
That's I mean, there's a there's a lot of openings
in his first week and so a lot to watch
(21:22):
to see who gets who gets those.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Positions. Uh So, but hey, Spindaker had a terrific career there.
He won the World's championship, and yeah, it's time to
move on. I mean, that's not a big surprise because
it was always always possibility that he may uh pack
(21:47):
it in at the end of this year, and he did.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
All right, Louis, we are here next Wednesday, next Tuesday's
opening night, So why don't we wrap up the NHL
fans here with some thoughts as we hit the regular season.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Now, well, as you know, I'm looking forward to it,
and you know, let's see what happens. If the Rangers
can bounce back with their new coach, the man who
is the coach of the United States national team, the
Olympic team, Mike Sullivan, a coach who's highly respected. I
(22:25):
think the Rangers probably will be more disciplined. I this
is a big year for a lot of guys on
the Rangers. Adam Fox, you know, can he regain this form?
I as you know, I think he's a little overrated,
but they need him to be the Adam Fox that
(22:46):
that won the Norris Trophy a couple of years ago,
and they need to bandage that to be consistent from
the beginning. Obviously, they have no goaltending issues and panarins
last year, and then he's a free agent. We'll see
what happens there. And you know, he is no matter
what you want to say, he is their best points
(23:07):
producer and he is the guy that the opposition has
to stop that he's in their game plan. So and
we'll talk more about the Rangers once the season begins,
you know, on Tuesday. As the season goes on, But
the Rangers cannot be out of the playoffs basically basically
(23:32):
the last three quarters of this season, and they can't
just on their goaltending to get them through. For the Islanders, interesting,
I mean, a new management is on the honeymoon. Matthew Dodge,
I think he did some nice things. He got the
(23:54):
Islanders younger immediately. He did a great job with that
cal Rich You're gonna make the team. It looks like
Matthew Schaeffer is going to make the team even though
he just turned eighteen. Is Anton Declaire gonna have a
bounce back year after that bad injury, that terrible injury
he had and then being ineffective the Islanders have, you know,
(24:17):
their goaltending is not really an issue. Is this the
last year for anders Lee in all likelihood yes? Will
he betrayed at the trade deadline? Maybe? So those are
some of the things to look at. Is this a player?
Could this team uh contend for the playoffs? I'm not
really sure. I don't think so, because I think Montreal
(24:40):
is going to take a big jump this year. Ottawa
might take a bigger jump this year so and Detroit
has to, you know, finally break through. So I think
the Islanders are in a little bit of a tough
line there, but we'll see. And for the New Jersey Devils,
this is the year they're no, No, they're no for
(25:00):
a nice young bunch of guys. Uh, this is the
they gotta they gotta make Uh they got they gotta
make a jump a next level jump. Jack has three
or four years left on his deal. H Quinn's a
free age at the end of this year, Alex, I
(25:21):
wouldn't be surprised if there's a trade either soon before
the trade deadline. What Well, I know we don't watch Vancouver.
Well I do, but I know a lot of New
York area fans don't focus on Vancouver, but I think,
uh they should because the Vancouver gets off to a
slow start. I think you can see uh the Luke
(25:44):
the Quin news coming to New Jersey happening sometime in
the middle of the year. And uh uh Dougie Hamilton,
who has two years left on his deal at nine
million a year, could be part of that trade going
to Van Vancouver. Just my thoughts, Neil. We'll see Dawson
Mersher has to have a better year than he had
(26:04):
last year for the Devils and it should be in
interesting hockey season at least at least at the start.
And remember the first twenty games are very important. If
you want to be a playoff contender after after a
Thanksgiving Day. Those first twenty games are really important. Remember
we also have an Olympic break in February for two weeks.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
I got to say before we wrap, going for imagine
next year and the mental actually in the postseason, the
Yanks in the postseason, and the NHL is starting along
with football. I love the September starting idea.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Yeah no, well yeah, because next year they go to
NHL goes to eighty four games, and it'll be it'll be,
it'll be interesting. So we'll see what happens. And some
breaking news, Alex, the Texas Rangers have hired former Marlins
(27:04):
manager Skip Schumacher as their manager. I know he was
on their target list and they.
Speaker 2 (27:09):
Just I remember when he played with the Cardinals.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
Well he's still young, and that's probably that's a good
pick for the Texas Rangers, who I thought we were gonna
win the Western Division of the American League this year,
and for the second straight year, their offense just just
was terrible.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
So I know, and Boat she had won in a
couple of years ago. But you know, it's time to changing.
Bob Melvin out in San Francisco as well, yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
That surprised me. I was surprised that Bob Melvin got
the acts. I really did. He'll probably get another job
and so you know, we'll see what happens. It's a
good good, like I said, a good weekend starting with
tomorrow with baseball, the football both college and UH and
pros and hockey season begins next week. So we love
(28:00):
sports and we got a lot to chew on with
what's going on. So thank you, Alex, Hey.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
Thank you so much. We love when it's a multi
sport town all at the same time, so it's exciting.
At least. There's some baseball coming into New York next
week in addition to opening night for the Rangers, so
it'll be all fun and whatnot. All right, Well, Luta
Minello giving his take. And by the way, you can
take Tripper to the game this postseason, as I've been
given word by one Eric Ryan at Tripper Corp that yes,
(28:31):
Tripper is giving you in all inclusive accessible travel to
and from Yankee Stadium all postseason long. So book with
them right now Trippercorp dot Net. The games on Tuesday,
maybe Wednesday as well, we'll have to see, but for now,
book your ride today with the all inclusive Accessible Transportation company.
(28:53):
With your Wave vehicles, you need to get to him
from the game, door to door. Gaby and I have
had them multiple times take us to him from sporting events.
Very honored to partner with them this month and I
just want to give him a shout out tonight on
one look up Alex Network
