Speaker 1 (00:02):
Here's your host, Alex Garrett.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
All right, well, I'm here with lou Turminello for another
Terminillo's take and a lot of sessions today in radio.
But here we are with Louis Lou on the podcast.
And you know what number comes to mind, right, and
what player comes to mind as we hit the last
weekend of the season, mister Babe Ruth, three pivotal games

(00:28):
for the Yankees and sure the Mets, but for the Yankees.
And I would say in season regular season history that
I can remember the most pivotal final regular season weekend
for a lot of teams, including the Yankees.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Hey, Alex, how are you? Thanks for having me? As always? Well,
the Yankees are in. I mean that they're either going
to play two out of three against the Red Sox
and all likelihood or they're gonna get to buy. For
the Yankees, obviously it's all about the postseason, whether they
win the division or they played in two out of three.

(01:05):
And obviously they've had some past hitting problems come playoff time,
and you know the challenges for the Yankees are are
they gonna be able to to hit playoff pitching? There'll
be pressure on Aaron Judge who's the best player in
baseball to come through come in the postseason, which he

(01:29):
never really has. Can Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm take
their best career seasons ever into the postseason and have
continued success. I think those are the questions. Will the
Yankees poor fielding and lack of fundamentals bad base running,
which has done them in in other playoff series rear

(01:52):
its ugly head. I think the Yankees are in pretty
good shape now. I'm not gonna I know that they
had a very easy September schedule and that's helped them
get back into potentially getting the buy and winning the division.
But they took advantage of a favorable schedule, So we'll see.

(02:13):
And again, just like last year, the road to the
World Series is not like it wasn't it is in
the National League, even though the National League isn't as
dominant as I thought it was going to be going
into the season. But I think the Yankees are in
good shape the pit. They got good starting pitching. It
seems like they've strained out their bullpen, and I mean,

(02:36):
they could love next Friday. At this time, they could.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Be out of it.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
If they don't win the division if they play the
Red Sox, and the Red Sox have good pitching lined up,
I'm sure Crochet will be geting the game one starter.
They could be out of it, but they could also
be getting ready for the next round. So uh so
we'll see. I mean, the Yankees are closing the season
on an uptick, and that's how you want to go

(02:59):
into the playoff.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
I know strength and schedule has really helped them out
here down the run, but as you say, they're taking
advantage of it. They're not losing the bad teams, and
we always say it's how you do against the bad
teams that it's sort of a sign. And also the
fact that they can win now without hitting a homer
every night is vital to postseason. And I'll tell you,
and maybe I haven't looked enough closely at it, the

(03:22):
fundamentals feel a lot better than last year. I don't
know where the change went, but it's like they got
rid of DJ. They moved Jazz the second and all
of a sudden things were moving from that point forward. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:34):
No, Chisholm has been tremendous for the Yankees, There's no
doubt about it, and that that move to put him
at a second after they got Ryan McMahon, who's done
a good job field and he hasn't hit, but to
save an out or two with a great play that
he may make, I'll help your pitching staff and contributes

(03:56):
to wins. Youon't always have to, you know, go four
for four, contribute to wins as we've seen many times.
And the defense of major League Baseball Alex overall, I
think that is that it's all time greatest. You have
great athletic players. I mean you saw the catch by
Noel z Marte saved the Reds Bacon yesterday by stealing

(04:20):
that home run, going way over the fence to steal
Brian Reils of a home run yesterday that would have
tied the game against the Reds in the game that
the Reds had to win yesterday. Pete crow Armstrong, even
though the Cubs loss, made a spectacular catch on on
a Soto rocket. He's just a great center fielder. And

(04:41):
part of you have these guys are great athletes, better
than ever. But a part of the great defensive plays
are the is the modern major league glove. It's so
big and the web is so strong. It helps these
great defensive players make even greater the plays. So you know,

(05:03):
in this season of wild extremes where teams have won
ten in a row then lost ten out of eleven,
and we've seen we could just about mark every team
in the major leagues. But coming down to the last
three days and you know, we'll see if the Mets
could get in. Obviously, the Mets pitching staff or lack
of pitching has sabotaged their efforts to win games. And

(05:26):
you know they were forced out of desperation to bringing
up Nolan m Playing who's just been spectacular, Johanna Jonah
Tong who has been okay, he probably is it wasn't ready.
And Brandon Sprout, who, with their life on the line tonight,
will be pitching in an important game against the pitcher
won the Saw Young Award two years ago and is

(05:49):
pitching great the last six weeks. Sandy al Contra, I mean,
Lindor Soto, Alonso, Nemo, they all produce for the Mets,
and they did their job, and the Mets have a
layout closer. He did his job and they're still in
the life in that situation. Alex Viento's had a big

(06:10):
twenty twenty four as you like to call him. He
was the call of the year, and he was. He
has been terrible in twenty twenty five. He really has.
They get no center field offensive production. It's good to
have Tyrone Taylor back, even though he's not much of
an offensive player. He's a gold Glove defensive center fielder.
And the two major injuries to Francisco Alvarez has killed them.

(06:33):
But that being said, they should not be in this
position and if they don't make it this weekend, Alex,
this is the biggest failure in franchise history. I mean,
none comes close. And I'm you know, I'm a lifelong
Mets fan, and I would consider myself a Mets of
storian on some level, and I've been watching this team
since that second and third year in their existence. This

(06:57):
is the biggest failure in franchise history. This is bigger
than twothdays and seven because if this playoff system was
in two thousand and seven, even though they blew first place,
they would have been in the playoffs, very similar like
the Detroit Tigers are now, who have blown a fifteen
and a half game lead and still might get a
golden parachute because a there's a playoff position. This is

(07:22):
unlike the two thousand and seven Mets, or the nineteen
sixty four Phillies who blew a six and a half
game lead with a twelve to go, or the nineteen
seventy eight Red Sox, he blew a fourteen game lead
to the Yankees. There was no playoff. There was no
soft landing with a playoff spot. So a very weird season.

(07:43):
I think a very weird baseball season comes to an
end on Sunday. But if the Mets don't make it
absolute failure. And even if they do make it, it's
still been a bad season.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
And it's just been a weird year of streaks on
every part. I mean in the core the Tigers streaks
that are doing them in now is the most shocking
of the whole season. But I'll tell you, I remember
that game in a Washington when the Mets let it
get away and threw it away.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
They had a few.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
More of those games, and if they had those games
sealed up, they would not be in this position right now.
There's no doubt about that.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah, now, there we've got a few games. There was
that game against Washington early in the year. There was
that game on Sunday after against the Yankees where they
almost won, but they were pitching minor league pitchers and
they were in.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Cleveland, the one where you were laced with f bombs
in your response to me because you couldn't believe how
I think it was. Uh, well it was Beatty who
threw the ball in the right field. I mean, well
it wasn't it was that, but it was the tyrone.
Taylor was on first base, and uh, I believe it

(08:53):
was Lindor double down the right field line and the
third base coach, saw Bor held them up and he
should have definitely sent them and I'm almost sure if
Taylor would have scored and then.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
The Mets would have won the game. They lost it
in the tenth inning. Those type of little things make
a difference when you're trying to get in the playoffs.
And Alex, let me tell you, even though there are
a bunch of average teams getting into the sixth spot
and fifth spot, there's a lot of average teams. Major
League Baseball loves this, and as fans, we have more
interest the Cleveland Guardians. Fans thought they were out of

(09:31):
it six weeks ago. Now they're in it. And I
mean even a Diamondbacks up, and they're still technically in it.
I mean, they lost two in a row of the Dodgers,
but they traded at the trade deadline Eugenio Chuarez and Nailer,
and technically they're still in it if things go their

(09:52):
way this week. And I don't see it going their way.
But major League Baseball loves this more fan interests. But
it's just been a it's been a bad season for
the Mets, no matter, let's I hope they make it,
but it's been a bad season. It's been a disappointing season,
a very frustrating season.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
So all right, but why do I still feel like
it's not as bad as two thousand and seven. I
mean that one just was a meltdown right in front
of our eyes every week.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
But Alex, that would have been they still would have
been in the playoffs. I mean, they still have been
in the playoffs if they had there's not they're fighting
for number six. A team with a three hundred and
forty million dollar payroll and paying the luxury tacks are
fighting for the sixth spot. It's different, in my opinion.
It's different my view, It's different than two thousand and seven.

(10:41):
Should they have lost in two thousand and seven, No, No,
I mean I know they had some injuries to the bullpen,
and but they still they had They had a very
favorable schedule in those last seventeen games, and they couldn't
close the deal with a very very good team that
they had that wasn't a team of smoke and mirrors.
I was a very good team.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
But let me ask you this, would you take a
Soto forty forty two home run career a year or
would you take him at twenty five or thirty and
then making the playoffs. I'd rather that, But you know,
he did have a record year in that sense.

Speaker 1 (11:19):
Well, I mean, the guy's done his job. He has
forty three home runs. Actually, he's third in the National
League in RBIs, he's first, in walks, he's first, and
on base percent first or second and on base percentage.
The guy. I mean, we all wanted to see him
hit seventy five home runs and driving two hundred and
fifty runs. That's not realistic. I never thought he would

(11:42):
playing in city field the majority of his games. I
never thought he would hit forty three home runs this year.
And maybe I'll have a big weekend but the thing
that the Mets have to do, and David Stearns got
away with it last year, and I give him credit
with you know, with the pitching and a Mets pitching lab.
They gotta reevaluate who they go after next year. They

(12:05):
can't go after the Frankie Montasses of the world. We
knew it in December, Alex. We said on this podcast,
what are they doing? They took that thirty four million
dollars and they threw it in dumpster. Frankie Montes' stinks.
He's always stunk. And I hate to talk in such
terms as stink, but that's what he is. He stinks.

(12:26):
And I was a waste the money. You know. I
think they can rebuild all these guys because of analytics.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Yeah no. And then of course the Senga disaster and
that whole thing again this year, and the Clay Holmes thing,
whether he was going to be fit for Starter or not.
I mean, there's been a lot and it's it's not
been pretty, But Lou I have to switch gears for
a second. Although I know he went a weigh in
on which what I just said as well, so feel

(12:55):
free to weigh in on that.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Yeah No, I think say Holmes has done his job.
I mean, they would convert a lifelong well not. I
mean he had started early on in his career in
the minors, and even I think he started a couple
of times with the Pirates. But he's been relieving the
last four or five years. So the conversion of Clay
Holmes from started to reliever I think has been successful.
But again, they got to stretch these guys. I mean,
the other night David Peterson got knocked down the second inning.

(13:20):
I mean, he was fooling No.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
One.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
And then we had Gary Cohen saying, well, he's never
pitched one hundred and fifty innings? Are you kidding me?
One hundred and fifty innings?

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Guys used to pitch two hundred guys used to pitch
two hundred and seventy five, two hundred and Eightyes, I
know things are different because of the way coaches pitching
coaches groomed these guys, and but one hundred and fifty
we got that.

Speaker 1 (13:46):
That's a big deal. I mean, please, I don't get it.

Speaker 2 (13:54):
Alex all right, Louis, Well, I want to switch gears
here because there's three days, three games for a record
that could possibly be broken. And look, we all know
I love the Yankees, but I'm not I'm gonna, you know,
go like a Yankee fan that things. Judge deserves it

(14:15):
over Cal. The health issue for Judge was evident this year,
and Cal was healthy most of it. And I just
think he is the MVP. Sorry Yankee pans, I just do.
There's just no way around it.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Oh, I agree with you, you know, and I think Judge
is the best player in baseball. I think there's two.
Probably since two thousand, there's two great players in baseball.
Mike Trout and Judge are probably the two best. Akunya
Ronald Lacuna was on his way and he still might

(14:49):
regain that, but he had He's had two back to
back terrible knee taires, but he would also be in
that category. And but again as most valuable, he's a catcher.
He's a switch hitting catcher. He plays baseball toughest position.
And like I said last week, if I had a vote,
I'm voting for Cal Raley. I mean, Judge is gonna

(15:11):
win it again. I mean, hey, only four guys, and
I'm not include I know it's seven, but I'm not
including Sosa McGuire and Bonds. It's the three Yankees, Judge,
the Babe, Marris and cal Raley that alone sixty home
runs to sixty home runs, and the Seattle the Seattle

(15:33):
Baseball Park is not a home run hitting haven. I
would vote, I mean I can't. I think he's winn
it pretty easily. But you hear the analytics, these guys,
all these gas bags, and they who have votes, they
I think they're gonna vote for for judge.

Speaker 2 (15:51):
Well they'll say the intentional walks and they'll say the
ops and look, I'm still impressedent Aaron has maintained a
high average most of the season. That's that's a good sign.
Means he's hitting on all cylinders. But you look at
the biggest thing.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
He's the best player in baseball. He's he's the most
dangerous offensive player in baseball. He comes up to the plate,
you have to change your strategy for that inning or
whatever the situation is. If it's slate in the game,
there it did. When when he changes your strategy the

(16:27):
opponent's strategy, that's all you need to know. He's the
best player in baseball. I mean, you could talk about
Otani o'tonni struck out one hundred eighty eight, one hundred
eighty seven times this year, and he doesn't and he
doesn't play the field. You know that's true. That's just me.
I mean, like I said, and you know I'm a
Yankee fan, but the judge is the best player in

(16:48):
baseball by he is always.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
The best player in This season alone tells them something
that we haven't seen, absolutely all right, And of course
as a catcher, we haven't seen that from that position,
I think in history in a lot of ways. But
moving along here, because I can talk baseball all day,
like I these three games are on my mind before

(17:12):
we move on to football and Jackson Dart Yanks have
to win all three. I don't think you can lose
at least one of these games. That's the way it
feels right now.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
Well, I think the Orioles are gonna be tough. I mean, obviously,
the Orioles and Yankees have been playing each other for years,
many times in tough down to the wire pennant races,
so there's a history between the Yankees and the Orioles.
The Orioles have played better the last six weeks. They've
been pitching better than they have been, so they're gonna

(17:43):
tell them, hey, they would love to see to push
the Yankees out of the division and having to play
in that you know when that basically anything goes to
out of three. So I don't think it's an easy
weekend for the Yankees. I don't think it's an easy
weekend for the for the Blue Jay either, because you know,
Kevin Cash and the Jays, even though they're out of it,

(18:04):
they're going to play the game to the to the hilt,
right to the end, just like the Miami Marlins are
gonna do. I mean, there's gonna be a ton of
met fans down in Miami this weekend, and that's gonna
that's gonna juice up the Marlins. It's going to juice
up the Marlin players. So it's a great baseball weekend
and as you said, it's an interesting football Sunday also,

(18:28):
all right.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
In two thousand and six, I think it was the
Yangs had a chance to they were in Boston for
the final game of the year, and they went to
Aaron Small or something like that. There are some controversy
toe it didn't start Small maybe that's what it was,
and it was like, what are you doing? It's the
final game of the year. I mean, you have to

(18:49):
start freed on Sunday. I know you're looking at the
playoffs and you want to give them a little rest,
but you've got to start freed on Sunday eight to
help them get the twenty wins. That would be pretty cool.
But because you still might have a division to clinch
on Sunday.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
Well, if it comes out to not playing for the week,
you're that that's under consideration. But if the Yankees are
eliminated from winning the division, they can't pitch Freeda on.
They cannot pitch Freeda on a Sunday. If the Yankees
know Tomorrow night that they have no chance of winning
the division. Tomorrow night's Saturday night, as we record this

(19:23):
on Friday night, they cannot pitch MaTx freed On on
a Sunday. They got because he's gonna pitch Tuesday night
against against Garrett Prochet if they're in all likelihood they'll
be playing the Red Sox. So if the Yankees, no,
they're not gonna win the division. Sorry, fore you're not
gonna win your twenty games. And he doesn't want to

(19:43):
win the twenty games. He wants to pitch Tuesday Night.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
Uh, well, that's true too. He is thinking about that,
and that's something Judge's tone about this whole. He wants
to win every single game out right. I feel like
he's serious.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
I really should Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, determined year.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
Note that he wasn't last year. But I feel like
there's a different target after what we saw the last
postseason that he wants to Alex.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
The Yankees have made the playoffs twenty six l last
thirty one years. That's remarkable. Yeah, I know six, I know.
I know they've bought a lot of players and I
know all that and I hate all that stuff. You know,
they are, they are the ring leaders in buying players.
But again, he's played a lot of playoff series, and

(20:29):
he's played a lot of playoff series where he has
been unsuccessful. We've talked about it. He has a two
oh five lifetime playoff batting average. But one of these
playoff series, he's gonna, he's gonna, he's gonna mash it.
He's gonna be the hero. So the more, the more
opportunities you have, that's all you can ask for. So again,

(20:50):
we'll see what happens. It should be a very interesting postseason.
It'll be interesting. But the Yankees have the home field
even if they're in two out of three, and that
should help them. And Devin Williams is pitching better Alex,
so he's pitching the better.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
And he has his own intro like everybody else does.
He's he's a he's doing well. Finally that he's coming around,
and that's what they need from him to vall Bednar
and the crew in the bullpen.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
Well, we'll have to see how this whole thing plays out.
All right, let me let me shift gears to Sunday
because obviously the Giants are now going to start Jackson Dark.
And let me tell you something. I thought, you know,
Russell was going to get another week. But at the
same time, after what happened the final drive of the
game against the Chiefs and all the booze, I think

(21:41):
they had to make a move here.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Well, this is my question. They made the draft a
trade to trade up to get Jackson Dark, which is fine,
and I I'm a big proponent in that move. But
my then my question is why did the Giants sign
Russell Wilson in the first place if they were going
to go to uh to ben him? After you know

(22:06):
three games for Jackson dark they did have. They could
have just signed Jamis Winston like that like they did
and start him for three games, and if you bench
him after three or four games, it would be less
I don't want to say controversial, because two weeks ago
the guy threw four hundred and fifty yards in Dallas,
And yes, the Dallas defense may not be very good

(22:28):
at this stage of the season, but four hundred and
fifty yards is still four hundred and fifty yards. So
I'm just surprised that came this early. He must be
They must have a lot of confidence in them. Is
this is this? Did this come from John Mara? I'm
not so sure. Did this come from Joe Shane. I'm

(22:50):
sure that Joe Shane and Brian Dable talked about it,
but they're emphatic. They didn't say he's only starting this week,
said Alex unless he gets hurt, he's the starter for
the rest of the season. So what does that mean
for Russell Wilson? Will he be here next week? Will
he be released like Daniel Jones asked for his release

(23:12):
last year? Will he be traded? The quarterback injuries everywhere
in the league. Is he totally washed up. I'm not
so Russell Wilson is totally washed up. Obviously, he's nowhere
near the player he was five six years ago. Yeah,
it's I mean, Giants have a bunch of tough games
coming up, the Chargers, they got a couple of games

(23:34):
with the Eagles next week. Is a you know, a
soft landing doesn't mean they're gonna win. They're down in
New Orleans, and New Orleans seems to be bad, really bad. So, uh,
you know, it'll be very interesting interesting to see how
Jackson Dart does. Obviously it will juice up the fan base.
I'll be playing at home, it will juice up the

(23:55):
uh other players on the field. But again, he has
to play. He has to play effectively.

Speaker 2 (24:01):
So as I don't want to go throwback here, but
I remember when a certain Kurt Warner was benched by
the Giants for an ole miss QB and Eli Manning
and everybody thought it was the most wildest thing the
Giants could do. But then the kid brought the Giants
to Super Bowl years later.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
So yeah, yeah, but again, those those seven games that
he played, he was bad. They lost six in a row,
and they won that meaningless last season, a season ending
game against Dallas. So you gotta be careful with this.

Speaker 2 (24:34):
Also, today's generational rookies are different. I don't know what
it is, but they're not the.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
I would agree with that, Alex, I would agree, But
I think they all look they might most of them
are ready to play quicker than some. But look at
look at CJ. Stroud. Two years ago, he was not
only the best rookie in the league, offensive rookie in
the league, he was an MVP candidate, legitimate MVP candidate
for the Houston Texans. As a rookie. He's regressed last

(25:05):
year and the first three games this year. Uh, he's
he's regressed. So oh, you gotta be careful. That's that's all.
That's all I'm saying. And uh, you know, we'll uh we'll,
we'll see what happens on Sunday, but I'll make It'll
make the Sunday afternoon game obviously very interesting.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
All right. I gotta say, uh, I feel like this
mid season, even though it's a week three, it feels
like a mid season change already happening. They could have
a great effect. But I'm looking at these two managed,
two coaches who are determining my moods every day and
or every weekend, every day, right, Boone and Dable, and

(25:47):
they're doing what they can to save their jobs. But
but I want to go to Boone. He got into
the playoffs again, and I think Dave will get the
Giants playoffs again. But these coaches are having to navigate
crises both of their seasons. Is sort of parallel to this.

Speaker 1 (26:00):
Well, I mean, Boone's had success. No matter what you
want to say about Boone, he has the Yankees in
the playerff almost every year, and he was the manager
of a team even though it was a weak American
League last year. He has on his resume a world
serious appearance. And I don't think the Yankees are firing
Boone unless something catastrophic happens in the playoffs where he

(26:24):
makes an absolutely dumb in game move. As far as
dab Dabele's job is on the line right now, that's
why I think he put Jackson Dart in there again.
You don't want to start over. That's the worst thing,
losing franchises. That's what happens, losing franchises. But if the

(26:51):
remaining fourteen games, we don't see the Giants with the
arrow pointing up in any way, I have a feeling
that they'll be coaching change.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
Yeah, no, I think that's on the horizon. But we'll
see how Dabile navigates, just like we saw how Boone
is navigating this whole season, and I don't know. And
then on the other side, your manager, Carlos Mendoza, I
felt navigated things better last year than this year. Am
I right in that?

Speaker 1 (27:20):
Well, that's because he got better pitching last year than
this year.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
But his commentary has been a little different than last
year I feel like too. Like his postgame conference, he's
sort of calling out the players a little more, which
is what you might needed a manager, But it wasn't
the even keel we saw last year.

Speaker 1 (27:37):
Well again, remember after June first, they played twenty nine
games over five hundred the rest of the year. Since
the famous June thirteenth date, or the day after Alonso
made that ridiculous throated Senga and injured Senga's hamstring, the
Mets have the fifth worst record in the major leagues.

(27:58):
So there's I mean, those are two different dynamics for
a manager to speak post game or you know, down
the stretch. Now, the thing is Alex the Mets. The
Mets weekend is a disaster. They don't make the playoffs,
which is a which is a realistic possibility. Who's gonna

(28:20):
get the blame? You saw what the Liberty did. They
fired their coach two years ago. They got to the finals.
Last year they won the championship. This year they start
off nine to zero, then they have a bunch of injuries,
they lose in the first round and she's out. So
is somebody gonna take the fall for the Mets, whether
it's in whether they don't make it this weekend or

(28:42):
whether they lose too straight to the Dodgers? Uhuh? Next week?
Is Mendoza going to be the scapegoat? If Stern's looking
to protect his ass? I mean, you know he he's
the one who wants to put these teams together an analytically,
he's the one who's his first base production isn't important? Well,

(29:03):
tell me where would the Mets be without Alonso's thirty
seven home runs and one hundred and twenty three under
twenty four rbs. Where would they be? They would be
down there with the White Sox.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
You're right, and Alonso carried this team a lot of
the season in addition to being the now all time
Mets franchise home run.

Speaker 1 (29:21):
Here.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
Hey, by the way, I got to tell you Howie
Rose is on a podcast with Joel Sherman and John
Haemon saying he has at least another year in him. Man,
I get kind of sad when I hear all these
guys wrapping it up. But I'm glad how he's still
doing this for at least another year.

Speaker 1 (29:39):
Well on how we have some medical issues. He's a great,
great broadcaster. I mean, he really is. He should be
considered for the Baseball Hall of Fame. And yeah, it's
gonna be sad to see him leave Mets radio because,
as the great Hall of Fame broad caster Bob Murphy

(30:01):
called Mets games for all those years, said we paint
the word picture on radio. And Howie Rose definitely a
disciple of of of Lindsay Nelson, Bob Murphy and Ralph
Kiner from those houseame days of Mets broadcasting. He definitely
learned that that system. And he's a great he's a
great forecast. I hope, I hope he does games for

(30:23):
another five years. All right, Well, I got to tell
you my history with him as generational.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
I mean I was up in the booth with him
as a kid before an Orioles met game at batting practice.
Then he saw me in the Yankees Jersey met at
Yankee Sames saying you're confusing me, Alex, And overall I
just kept listening to him over the years. I remember
listening to him at the apartment on East forty fourth Street,
and it just he's a household name, a household voice.

(30:50):
And as you know, I got to interview him as
well when I was at Queen's College. So he's been
very special, not just on the air, but as a
person and part of our you know, extended family, if
you will. And I still email with him time to time,
so I got to reach out and just check in
and seeah, well.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
The two most famous Queen's College alums, Howie Rose and
Alex Garrett.

Speaker 2 (31:13):
Now Paul Simon is up there and signed b oh all.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
Right, okay, yeah, we'll sneak him in there.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
I'll take it. And of course I'll tell you that
one quick story. In twenty seventeen, when I was covering
it the Mets for the Queen's Gazette, he came over
and spent twenty minutes after or right before first pitch,
spent twenty minutes with me shooting the breeze and at
the time I was at Salem, you know, four years in.
He want to find out how I was doing. So

(31:40):
he's really taken me under his wing a law. But
even though we don't talk a lot, I just feel
his presence, you know.

Speaker 1 (31:47):
Yeah, No, he's a good man.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
All right, we gotta get to hockey because obviously we
real quick because obviously we have the preseason underway. But
more importantly, your Islanders have made some interesting moves with
regards to their Hall of Fame.

Speaker 1 (32:02):
Yeah, I saw that, Alex, and they're going to uh
put Pat Lafontaine, a great player, a member of the
Hockey Hall of Fame, is going to be inducted into
the Islanders Hall of Fame. Finally, before a game against
the Tampa Bay Lightning, a great player, he scored one

(32:24):
of the most famous goals in Islander history, the incredible
four overtime Easter Epic against the Washington Capitals, which ended
on East started on Easter Saturday, ended on about two
o'clock on Easter Sunday morning. He was he was a
great player, one of the great, one of the first

(32:46):
great American players. Uh. The Islanders actually made a trade
with the with the then Colorado Rockies, not to be
confused with the Baseball Colorado Rockies, for their first round
draft pick. They traded one of their longtime defense from
Bob Lorimer and another player I forget who. I think

(33:07):
it might have been Dave Cameron for the Colorado Rockies
first round pick. The Rockies were terrible. They should not
have been giving up first round picks. So the Islands
had the third pick in the draft a couple of
years later, and they picked Pat Lafontaine. And he played
in the finals when the drive for five that fifth

(33:27):
when we were going for five cups in a row.
He played like the last twenty games and he's and
he was very effective right off the bat. But the
Islanders lost the finals to the Edmonton Oilers, and he
had he had a tremendous career, hadn't had a contract dispute,

(33:51):
and the Islanders traded and Bill Tory trade them to
the Buffalo Sabers for Pierre Jhon and a couple of
other players. I think Benoa Hope might have been that
trade also, and Pierre Turjon two years later scored fifty
eight goals. He's a member of the Hockey Hall of
Fame also, So it was a trade that helped both teams,
and the Islanders got to the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference
Finals in ninety three, where they lost to the eventual

(34:14):
champion Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canaines, who are who's who
are led by their now coach Patrick Waugh who beat
him in five games, and then they ended up being
the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup finals. But
La Fontaine deserves every accolade that's coming to him. A

(34:34):
great player, and it's good to see the Islanders bring
one of their old greats back. But besides the Islanders,
the New Jersey Devils have not signed Luke Hughes yet
and he's not in camp. And you know, you just
hear a lot of rumors of what's going on with

(34:55):
the Devils, that Dougie Hamilton might be on a trade block.
He has a he has a nine million dollar cap
hit and I believe he has two more years left
on his deal. You hear all this talk about Quinn Ughes,
the Hughes brothers wanting to play together and Quinn Us
is going to be a free agent at the end
of this year. I don't know. Could could Doug Hamilton

(35:16):
be part of a trade to Vancouver where Quinn Us
would be coming back to the Devils sometime this year
at the trade deadline. I don't know. I mean, it's
just just a lot of just a lot of talk
going on even here, talk that that at the Penguins,
who are in total rebuild mode, might offer Sidney Crosby

(35:39):
up and he could obviously Crosby can still play. Would
the Devils be interested in getting somebody like that. Uh,
I don't think that the Rangers or Islanders would be
interested in in Crosby. Uh. The Islands obviously were a
young team and uh they've had cal Richie who they
got for brock Nelson had a good camp. I don't

(36:01):
think he's going to start this season with the Islands.
But that's somebody look at when the season begins, so
you know, hockey season's here. But keep an eye on
the the U's brother situation, both Luke who is unsigned
and not in camp, and uh the quinn u situation.

(36:21):
The brothers have said they want to play on the
same team, so whether.

Speaker 2 (36:25):
They wanted to play with their third brother, who everybody
seems to forget about it in the Upper Upper West,
you know, up Northwest.

Speaker 1 (36:33):
I mean, you know, he's literally the first or second
best defenseman in the league. And he's won, you know,
he's won accolades, he's won he's been first team, he's
won trophies. But the old brothers want to play player
on the same team, whether it's the Devil's whether it's
van I don't think it's gonna be Vancouver. So we'll see,
we'll see what what what happens there, will that will

(36:56):
Luke Hughes got a three year bridge Bridge deal, we
get an eight year deal. I think that's what he
probably will get. But they haven't signed him yet, and
the opening day is October eighth or ninth, so it's
not that far away. Alex.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
I know the Rangers October seventh, the hundredth campaign, one
hundred season, and pretty special to be witnessing that. We
all know the Giants one hundred went south. But the
hockey is a very different sport than the Rangers seem
to always it's got for last year. They always seemed
to be in the thick of it. So we'll love
to see. But for now, Lou, I got to jump
back on the air, so I wanted to take a

(37:30):
long time to talk with you tonight. I'm excited we
did Terminola's take for this week. We'll have a more
extended edition next week because I we still got to
get to your Jets and what they're gonna do moving forward.
But right now, the focus seems to be on Dart,
the Yanks going for the division, the Mets hanging on
by a thread, and the new threads for the one

(37:50):
hundred season all seemed to be the storylines this year.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
This week, Louis, yes, you hit the nail on the head.
The Mets are hanging on by a thread.

Speaker 2 (37:59):
All right, Well let's see what happens Inami and I
think it's funny right in two thousand and seven who
they have to face against in that final weekend and
brawl with Miami, well Florida then, and they were a
different looking team then, but the sentiment remains the same.
I think it'll be a rivalry weekend for sure.

Speaker 1 (38:18):
Absolutely, Alex, thank you for having me as always, I
much much appreciated.

Speaker 2 (38:22):
All Right, that's lou Terminilo Terminela's take on One Leg
