Speaker 1 (00:02):
Here's your host, Alex Garrett.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
It's another week. We haven't talked to my next guest
in a couple of weeks already, which is kind of
wild because we always do a weekly take. But Termindello's take,
you had time with family. I've been running around doing
twelve different jobs at my radio, Jeb, and here we
are finally reconnecting to celebrate our fourth year coming up
of Terminello's take.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Yeah, it is pretty amazing, Alex. Thank you as always,
thank you for the last four years, give me the
opportunity to speak with with you and something you know
I enjoy, so looking forward to it. And as I
say in politics, four more years, maybe four more years
after that, so.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I know you're you're you are you are. There are
no term limits to Terminello's take.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
All right, that's great, thank you, I appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
So that being said, I remember that first conversation about
Gil Hodges when they put him in the Hall of
Fame and what a day that was. And after that
hour long conversation, it clicked in my brain. Low, we
got to do this more often than we have week
after week.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yeah, and again, you know we talk about a little
different types of sports. We talk about the history of sports,
which I love to talk about, the history on anything sports.
It fits right in. So, uh, you know, let's let's
let's get it going. I mean, with the NFL season
starying tomorrow night, exciting times, the baseball season and its

(01:26):
stretch run. In a couple of weeks, the hockey and
basketball team leagues will be going to training camp. So
we've got a lot of stuff coming on.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Oh, we absolutely do. And I mean I want to
start because we have a lot of hockey fans that listen.
I scrolling, so for me before we start, and I
see Scott Gohman is in a Ranger jersey. Okay, I
know more of the devil guy. Okay. I actually held
the Stanley Cup with him in George stebert Or suite.
He was at one end of the cup at the
bottom and I was the top holding the cup at

(01:56):
the top of it was quite a moment.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
But he's in the US Hall of Fame. So give
us a little lesson here. I want to met to
the NHL Hall of Fame and the US Hall of Fame.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Well, obviously, the US Hall of Fame is for people
who have contributed to the development and greatness of hockey
in the United States. And Scott Domes, who comes from
the forty nine state from Alaska, obviously he was an
outstanding Devil. And I will never forget the day that
signed Gomez who Lou Lamarello, who's also in the US

(02:31):
Hockey Hall of Fame, is very close to Gomez, and
he actually made them the Islanders a power play coach,
and when Lou took over, the Devil the Islanders. But
I'll never forget the day that he signed with the Rangers.
I believe it was for seven million dollars a year.
I was in a conference room with two or three
of my colleagues and Lou, who's never late for a meeting,

(02:54):
was a little bit late that day and he came
in and he apologized and he said, I am not
paying Scott go my seven million dollars a year. I
think it was seven million dollars a year for seven years.
And obviously Scott Gomers did not have the Ranger career
that he had as a Devil career.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
So by that time he was a little older. Let's
be honest, he was a little older at that point,
and he had had all his success as a devil.
I mean, I think he won two or three Cups
there with them.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
He was an outstanding player. I mean, but lou you know,
you know how lou Is once he once he put
you know, he draws the line to saying he's not
going over it. And I'll remember, I remember that day.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
But you're right, Louie. There is an NFL season upon us,
and we can talk about ANHL later. That's over a
month away, which I can't believe how fast time's going.
But Louie, the New York posts they saying the future
is bright for both the Jets and the Giants, and
I don't know. I feel like I hear that every
year with these teams. But but there's something in the air.

(03:58):
Maybe it's the new coaching Steff the Jets. Maybe it's,
you know, the infusion Jackson Dart has given in his reps.
Maybe it's just this fire under both teams that I'm
not felt in a little while. Are you feeling that
same fire yet?

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Or no, Well you're much younger than me and I
have gone through more Jets torture then you've had to watch.
I don't feel it, Alex, I mean, I have no idea.
I love Aaron Glenn as a player. He was a
terrific Jet player. But the Jets have a new coach,
they got a new GM, they have a new quarterback,

(04:32):
a new offensive philosophy. I do think they have a
solid roster. I am not a big fan of the
new quarterback justin fields, but he is the most athletic
person to play a quarterback position in Jets history. So
you know, we'll see if they can put all together. Obviously,

(04:53):
while they do have a solid roster, they're a little
short in some areas. They need a number two receiver.
They might be a little short on some linebacking talent.
But they suffered a major injury today with Elijah Vera Tucker,
their right guard, likely being out for the season what

(05:15):
looks like a torn bicep. Conflicting reports on which arm
it is, but doesn't matter. He was going to start
at right tackle. He's a tremendous player. He's in his
fifty year. He's a free agent at the end of
the year. The Jets game in the fifty year option.
I don't think he will ever see him play again

(05:37):
because they're not going to give him a big contract
at the end of the year. He's had injuries in
the past, but when he played, he was an outstanding
He was their best lineman. And it's a double whammy
because he was going to play right guard and Armond Membo,
their number one draft pick out of Missouri's gonna be
their right tackle. And having if you're a Tucker next

(06:00):
to Membo gave them gave gives Membo a little confidence,
a little security there because they were building a good
offensive line. So what they're gonna do is, in all likelihood,
they're gonna move Joe Tipman, who was their center.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
I think.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
I think they're gonna move into one of the guard positions.
I don't know if they're gonna keep John John Simpson
and left guard or move him to to right guard
or vice versa, and Josh Myers, who they signed as
a free agent, will be the starting center. Alex I
think the Jets. The Jets are gonna run the ball
more than they have since the days of Rex Ryan,

(06:42):
which I have no problem with, but still, this is
a passing league.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Especially because their own quarterback is a runner. I mean,
let's just face that Justin Fields can run up that
field like nobody's business and I gotta ask you this, Louie.
I mean, yeah, the brief fields backfield is gonna be
very interesting. Eron Glen was defensive coordinator against the lines.
He had a face field twice every year for the
last couple of years. He might have picked up on

(07:07):
some things and can coach him a little differently having
picked up on it on the defensive side on the ball.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Well, you know, obviously he says, I'm coaching the entire team.
And you know, sometimes when these defensive coaches or offensive coaches,
they only want to coach, They only coach one side
of the ball, and that's that's a detriment to the team.
Aaron Glenn said on day one, I'm I'm going to
be the coach of the entire team, and I do

(07:32):
believe that. And then we'll see how good he is
starting a Sunday when he has to face fourth and
one with you know, ten minutes to go in a
game from midfield. Does he punt? Does he does he
go for it? You know, what's he gonna call block management?
We don't know those things yet. I still think the

(07:54):
Jets have a pretty good roster. I don't think it's like,
you know, it's a teardown. I'm not as optimistic as
some other people are, but uh, you know they have
they have a tough game, but a winnable game on Sunday,
I know.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
And that's against Ben against Rogers and the Steelers. I mean,
you can't make this story up.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
You cannot make this story up. You are right.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
But I want to give credit to Jake Asmond, who's
actually starting up a new show on Sundays.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
As maniacs are gonna get to listen to him every
Sunday morning on ESPN Radio New York. How cool is that?

Speaker 1 (08:28):
Well, it's funny. Uh, I subscribe to his podcast. I
don't want on his podcast so long, but uh, as
soon as I got the alert this morning that he
you know, he came on early this morning to talk
about and and announce the the injury to Elijah Via Tucker.
He knows Jets, obviously, he's a diehard Jet guy, and

(08:52):
you know it's it's I'll listen to him on Sunday morning.
I mean, there's a lot of good Jet podcasters out there,
and uh, but uh, it's a blow Via Tucker is
a blow even before the Via Tucker injury, Alex I'm
gonna be honest. I still think that they were going
to They'll be drafting in the top ten next next year,

(09:14):
so I think they might win more than a five
and a half games that that Vegas says they will,
but seven six, I don't think. I mean, I don't
think that they're going to uh uh. It's gonna be
a really interesting year.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
I really don't well, and the homecoming for Glenn is
kind of a big storyline here. But also I feel
like I don't know, maybe I'm going off on them
saying this, but Bowles didn't really have much of a
pedigree going into this SALEA didn't really have much. Glenn
has pedigree. He's been at the helm of in a

(09:51):
coaching staff, that's one, and I think there's some pedigree
to him.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
I agree, I agree. I think that that's are gonna
be physical and I think they're gonna be aggressive because
obviously he was mentored by Bill Parcells. He was the
cornerback on the Jets when Parcels was the coach of
the Jets, and I know he talks to Parcels on
a regular basis, So I think that's that's a plus.

(10:19):
I just can't see it happening this year. You still
need the difference making teams have the quarterback, and hopefully
maybe this is the year. This is his fifties, This
is his third team in five years, which is in
a good which isn't a good indictment on on Justin
Field's ability to be an NFL quarterback. But maybe this

(10:40):
is the year he turns it around and he reaches
his potential. He's not been an accurate thrower. I don't
know what they can do to help him become a
better thrower. We'll see, obviously, as you know, as I'm
a big time Jets fan and nothing would like me
to see that. They they turned it around in year

(11:00):
one under under coach Glenn So we'll see. I mean,
I I think I think the first month is gonna
be tough, I really do. I mean, after after Pittsburgh
at home, they have Buffalo at home. They'll be heavy
underdogs to them, uh, you know, and then they have
they go to Tampa Bay. I think Tampa Bay is

(11:21):
gonna be very good this year. I think they'll win
the South for a fifth straight year. Uh. And then
they play in Miami on a Monday night, So Sunday's
game is key for them to win as far as
the team psyche goes and team building and and I
hate to use this term that every sports coach uses
changing the culture. The only way you change the culture,

(11:45):
Alex is if you went on a consistent basis. That's
how you changed the culture.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
So I some think they have the tools. Look, the
Rogers Wilson did not mesh as well, but I think
the Fields Wilson will be very interesting to watch. I
think you gotta lean on Garrett Wilson here a lot
and let him get the reps, let him get the targets.
Maybe that was the thing last year. They didn't give
Hi enough targets.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
I think was one of the Gary Wilson had enough
targets last year. I mean, that wasn't the issue. The
issue last year and we I hate the reesa well
in thirty seconds. The issue last year was that they
got off to the bad start, Solid did a bad
job getting them ready. Then a knee jerk reaction by
Woody Johnson, and I don't blame him. The loss to

(12:31):
Denver was abominable. Then they lose in London, and he
has a lot of friends in London and Minnesota. Knee
jerk reaction. He got rid of solid, which was fine
because I would not have done it until the end
of the year. But then he put Jeff Woolbrick in,
who couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag,
and the defense let down and that was it.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
The rest is now that guy was in the middle
of a Shador Sanders controversy.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
I mean, it's just well, that was that was his so.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
You know so.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
But again, if you can't control his son, how is
he going to control an NFL team?

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Exactly the point now I want to go back to
and we'll get to the Giants in a second, but
you mentioned both sides of the ball, and I want
to go back to that story he broke which came true.
Travis Hunter number two to Jacksonville. Is that not a
cool story to look out for? It? See if he
can actually do both sides of the ball. I don't
remember a guy that can do that in recent memory.

Speaker 1 (13:28):
Well, he has the talent to do both, and god knows,
Jacksonville probably needs his talent on both sides of the ball.
We don't know when Ruth of the NFL with this, well, again,
it's it's gonna be interesting to see how Jacksonville handles him.

(13:49):
He says he can play every play on both sides
of the ball. If he can, God bless him. But
this is not the Big Twelve. This is the NFL.
Uh So, I I don't know why they're gonna play more,
but obviously we'll find out beginning this week. He's an
incredible talent and uh, I'm.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
Dion Sanders is as a coach in his own in
his own way. Not many coaches think like him to
use a guy on both sides of the ball. So
there's that too.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
But well, the deon Sanders was a great obviously a
Hall of Fame defensive back, an incredible kick returner, and
uh he was, and he was a very very good
wide receiver. That uh that that both San Diego San Diego,
San Francisco and and Dallas Hughes used him. Uh uh
you know as a as a wide receiver. So we'll see.

(14:41):
We'll see how that develops with with Travis Hunter. Uh.
I think the New England Patriot are going to be
a surprise team.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
Oh, Drake may If you watch some of his film
last year, he shows potential. I've he he was giving
them some good drives down the stretch in some of
those games. It just fell a little short. But he
has a lot of potential.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
I think obviously with Mike Rabel there as in his
first year, and I think the development of Drake May
and they drafted Travian Henderson from Ohio State in the
second round. The guy's going to be great in the NFL. Alex,
the guy's going to be a great running back. It
was a great college back. He's going to be a
great NFL back. I think. Obviously the Patriots don't have

(15:25):
a playoff fifty three man roster, but there I think.
And I am not obviously as a Jets fan. I
am not a Patriot backer in any way, shape or format.
As always, I look at things objectively. I think the
Patriots are going to the arrows pointing up for the
Patriots this year, and I think, and I think the

(15:46):
arrow's pointing down for the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
I mean, that's that whole thing. And now comes out
that maybe he was he's injured, that's why they traded him.
I mean, there's a lot going on with that, with
that trade. But I do find it funny, Lou, Yeah,
the Giants don't face him twice, but of course he
lands on the team that they still have to face
this year. I've met Life Stadium, I mean, of all
of all of the odds of all that.

Speaker 1 (16:14):
Yeah, well that's one of those quirks in the schedule
that you know happens. I think green Bay is gonna
be very good. I thought green Bay was gonna be
very good before they got Michael Parsons. And if parsons
neck injury isn't as bad, or that it's not a
neck injury, excuse me? Is that shoulder joint injury? If
that's not something that lingers all year? And we still

(16:36):
don't know if he's gonna play Sunday at home against Detroit,
which is a humongous opening game at Lambeau, the four
to twenty five game on CBS. I like the Packers.
I like the Packers a lot. I mean, the NFC
North is loaded. The NFC North is loaded, and the

(16:58):
AFC West has loaded. Those are the two, in my opinion,
two incredibly tough divisions in the NFL for twenty twenty five.
So it's gonna be in an interesting year. Minnesota, with
JJ McCarthy as a quarterback, did they make a mistake
in not re signing Sam Donald after he had that

(17:19):
great year last year. Donald now in Seattle with a
team that has a great defense. It's gonna be interesting
to see what Seattle what Seattle does. I think they're
gonna be very good. So I'm all rammed up for
this twenty twenty five season, and we haven't talked about
the Giants yet. I do think this is a make

(17:39):
or break year for the Joe Shane Brian dave Ole combination.
They will get better quarterback play this year, unless Russell
Wilson loses it, don't. I don't think he's done. I
don't think he's at a super Bowl level, but I
think he's He's better than the quarterback play the Giants

(18:01):
had last year. And then, of course, the big key
is when do they insert Jackson Dart into play this year?
If they get off to a good start and they're
like five and two, what do you do they gotta
get They really want to see Jackson dark play this year,
I assume, But does he send the whole year? If

(18:21):
to Giants are better than we thought. I also think
the Giants are gonna pick They're gonna be a top
ten A top twelve draft team. Again, the strength of
the team is their defensive line. It could be one
of the great defensive lines in the NFL. You'll probably
have the defensive rookie of the year in the NFL
in Abduu Carter, who's a can't miss prospect, and he

(18:41):
had an outstanding camp. So we'll see.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
I still think, even though they have the experience of
Russell and yet the darts in there and and of
course jamis that they're not gonna be in even the
top ten of you know, they're not gonna have a
winning record. It sounds like from from I do.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
Not think they're gonna have a winning record. I think
they'll be seven and at best they'll be seven and ten,
eight nine. That could change. And I'll tell you why
they're playing in Washington this week. Washington, from what people
tell me, had a bad training camp. Not in the games,
who cares about the exhibition games, but their training camp

(19:23):
but was a little disjointed. McLaren was out. Yeah, they
signed him. I don't think that's a big deal. But
Washington came out of nowhere and they were twelve and
five last year. Daniels was spectacular. Now they've had a
chance to look at the film. These defensive coaches have
looked at film all summer on Jaden Daniels, So they're

(19:44):
gonna nobody's perfect. Nobody, no quarterback, no player, no right tackle,
no center, no receiver, no no cornerback. And these coaches
look at film and a dissect film. And as soon
as the schedule came out, I'm sure all the Giant
coaches were looking at Washington film. I think the Giants
I'm not. I wouldn't kick the Giants on Sunday. I

(20:05):
think they have a chance Sunday. I do think they
have a better chance in Dallas. Dallas has to prove
it to me that they're not in the dumper. They
have to prove that to me. So I think the
Giants might be more organized, it might be better. It
may not show in the record because they do play,
based on last year's data, the fourth toughest schedule in

(20:27):
the league. But I think they have a chance in
these first two games. Then they come home on a
Sunday night for their home opener against Kansas City. And
while everybody's saying that, oh the Chiefs are, you know,
the Chiefs are gonna take a step back Alex. You
know me, never underestimate the heart of a champion. And
they still have that great defense, and they still have

(20:48):
Mahomes and Mahomes are gonna be ticked off that that
they got absolutely annihilated by the Philadelphia Eagles, who are
the best team in the league going in by a
good margin. Uh. You know people saying after winning the
AFC West nine years in a row that they're not
gonna win it this year. Well, maybe they won't. The
AFCST is hard, very hard. But I'm not going against

(21:12):
the Chiefs. So but I think the Giants are gonna
be you know, the Giants have some they have some
skilled players. I think their running game will be decent.
A big question mark is Andrew Thomas' health. We haven't
gotten a clear definition on how healthy he is. He's
as important to the Giants as Vera Tucker is to

(21:32):
the Jets, and uh, you know, we'll we'll, we'll see.
Should they be better? Yeah? Do they need to get
Jackson guard in there to see if he really is
the real deal? I guess. I guess it all depends
on how the season's going. Let's face this, Giants surprise
everybody and they're six and two. You can't pot guard
in there, you know, No, no, you can't.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
You gotta stick with Russ.

Speaker 1 (21:56):
I mean, you're talking about a borderline Hall of Fame quarterback,
a guy who won a Super Bowl in the Meadowlands
against Denver and came within one yard of winning another
Super Bowl as a quarterback against New England. It's gonna
be interesting to see how Dabel jugles the quarterback position.

(22:20):
But I mean, I think I think Wilson is going
to be good. I mean he's I think it's gonna
be okay.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
Oh no, I think Russell Wilson has a sort of
found rejuvenation too. So we'll have to see what happens.
But again, again, the Giants have given Dable the tools.
Shane's given Dable the tools. It is his make or
break year. I know we keep saying this, but I
really feel it this year.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Yeah. And again, remember, like I said, they have they
have good skill position players and uh you know neighbors.
Now he has a real quarterback thrown to him this year,
so it should be it should be good. The running
game is should be good. Their running backs are deep

(23:07):
Scatterbo from Arizona State, I loved him at Arizona State.
They got him in the fourth round a steal. In
my opinion, I think he's gonna be very good. He'll
be a fan favorite. He runs over people, he plays hard,
his the way he plays is infectious to teammates. So
it's this is is this a this is a better

(23:28):
roster than last year. It's not even close. And maybe
they'll surprise everybody. Maybe they will go nine and eight.

Speaker 2 (23:36):
And you know, Laurie, I just say the defensive side
of the ball is going to be promising. I want
to see more from from Burns. I think he did
okay last year, but he could do way more this year.
So we'll have to see how that goes. And of
course I'm thinking of the other storylines of the NFL
this year. What I could think of is obviously the

(23:57):
Bills are always one that's fascinating to me because Alan
still in his prime. You talk about the Chiefs, uh,
you know, not not giving up. The Bills aren't gonna
give up either. I mean they're they're still got a
good prime here. For how it's his year too, He's
got to break through here.

Speaker 1 (24:11):
Yeah, no, and it's I mean not only him he's
he has broken through. He needs his teammates to break through,
and he can only carry him on his back so long.
If Allen was on the Chiefs, he would have already
won his Super Bowl. Yeah. So I think the Bills
are gonna easily win a division. They're gonna easily win

(24:34):
the AFC East.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (24:36):
The Jets. While I think the Patriots will improve, they're
not gonna They're not gonna be within a sniff of
winning the AFC East. Like I said, I think the
Jets are gonna be picking the top ten again. I
hope I'm wrong, And I think the Dolphins are gonna
have a difficulty, let's put it that way. I really do.

Speaker 2 (24:56):
All right, we haven't even talked baseball yet, but I'm
just so enthroned with this because, as you know, I've
been watching preseason football a little more. This year just
been an intriguing thing for me. And I have to
say the other storyline for me, and I'm a you know,
my dad was a Bear fan, so of course on
the U. But the the complete uh what do you say,

(25:18):
not destruction, but you know, you know, the falling apart
of the coaching exaff for the Lions and how they
rebuild from that. That's gonna be interesting to watch, isn't it.

Speaker 1 (25:26):
Oh it is when you lose coordinators that can set
you back a year.

Speaker 2 (25:31):
Now.

Speaker 1 (25:31):
A lot of people say it's not gonna affect the Lions.
I don't know. Maybe it's not, but it'll be. It's
gonna be an interesting look. Especially they gotta play Minnesota twice.
They gotta play Ben Johnson, their old offensive coordinator twice.
With the Bears, they gotta play the Packers twice. Yeah,
I think that I think that's a factor. I do.

(25:54):
I do think that could be a factor. And Campbell's
a terrific coach and they have terrific team. But uh
oh yeah, the cordina is not being not being on
the sideline or up or up in the coach's box. Yes, Alex,
I agree with you. It will be. It will be
intriguing to see how how they react on both sides

(26:16):
of the ball this year.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
And then I think of her, you know, Herbert and
and Harball. How that matchups, how that relationship is going
to be this year. I mean, we've how did that?
It kind of fell flat last year, but but well
it was.

Speaker 1 (26:29):
That first it was their first year, and I think,
I'm sorry, you mean to cut you off, Alex. I
think the Chargers are going to be a major player
this year. They did lose their they did lose Slater
in training camp, in the training camp where it tore
is uh his knee and he's out for the year.
That's a huge blow. That's he protected Herbert's blind side.

(26:52):
But I think the Chargers are going to be very
very good. They they're a Super Bowl contender.

Speaker 2 (26:59):
Uh No, very interesting because I want to see that
out of them. I haven't seen that side of them yet,
but we'll have to see. And Herbert's another one of
those guys that's on that fringe of elite, but he's
not there yet. Maybe Harborough will get him there. You know,
he's he's one of those highly tauted quarterbacks for sure.
What else, Louis I mean when some of the NFL,

(27:20):
what else comes to mind? I mean, I'm also thinking
about Pete carrollback coaching the Raiders, and boy, they need
a change of pace out there.

Speaker 1 (27:30):
I mean, if you want to close up the NFL segment,
and obviously we'll be talking a lot about the NFL
the next four months, four or five months. I think
the Panthers might be a little bit better, might feel
a little bit better this year. A little New Orleans
is a question mark. But I think the Panthers, the Saints,
the Browns, maybe the Jets, I hope not, are all

(27:56):
going to be in the running for whoever the top
quarterback is going to come out of the draft. And
before we get to talk baseball, well, let's just talk
real quickly about the first weekend of college football, the
first real weekend of college football. It did not live
up to the hype, and the Texas Ohio State game

(28:25):
was boring, defensive struggle. Arch Manning looked like a guy
in his first game against a real good team. I
know we saw two games last year. He nervous. He
was when he dropped back to pass. He was thinking
run first almost on every pass dropback. Alex and Sarkisian

(28:49):
and the Texas offensive coaches tried to give him some
easy passes to first play the game. They tried to
They had him throw a little swing pass and he
threw it in the dirt. So he was nervous. He'll
get better. I'm not going to react and say that
he's you know that he's a bust or anything like that.
But the first weekend of college football was nothing special.
I mean, the Notre Dame Miami game at the end

(29:11):
was a little exciting, but that was it. LSU and Clemson.
I thought Clemson when win the game going in and
a big win for Brian Kelly.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
So so we'll see. I know, and Brian Kelly always
seems to run his mouth a little bit, but I'll
tell you I'm still bitter about the way he left
Notre Dame, but hey, he got a big win over
the weekend, and the Belichick era people say it's not
going to be that way every week. I'm not convinced
that yet. Look, I think I think it's true. People

(29:43):
were thrusting this idea of you and c revitalizing his
football program under Belichick. It's not going to take a
day Louis.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
Well, especially when you bring it over seventy players playing
on the team for the first time. Now, I expect
them to be as bad as they were on Monday night,
where I mean, you couldn't get a more butt kicking
than the tar Heels took the other night. Do I
think they'll be more competitive? Yes, Obviously Belichick was embarrassed

(30:16):
Monday Night on National TV. He is not going to
let that continue to happen. But as you said, it's
not gonna happen in one year. And they brought in
seventy new players. Dion tried that when he went from
Jackson State to Colorado. He brought all these new guys,
sixty seventy new guys. They went four and eight that

(30:38):
first year. That might be the same thing with with
with Bill Belichick. But they're gonna, I mean, they they
should be okay, they should be competitive going forward.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
We'll have to see. You know, we're actually talking on
the anniversary of his first Patriot game that he coached
twenty five years ago today, So how about that, Yeah,
the Jets, but I mean, Lugi, he had that one day.
As with the Jets, I know that lives in your
memory forever, Louis.

Speaker 1 (31:11):
It does because it would have and the Jets had
a very good team and that would have that might
have changed that history. But again we'll talk Jet history
another day.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
All right, let's get to this thing, springham At, Let's
talk about your Mets, because answer me this. You go
three out of three against Philly, you lose three out
of four and then one of the best teams in
the AL you beat two out of three.

Speaker 1 (31:36):
Hard to figure. It's hard to figure. I mean, alex
since August first, they have been crushing a baseball and
in those thirty games, thirty one games since August first,
including today's loss to the Tigers, they're thirteen and eighteen.

(31:57):
They've they've scored four runs or more in sixteen games
that they've lost, and that can't happen. I'm worried about
the pitching staff. They do not have a World Series
caliber pitching staff at this time. You know, Nolan McLain
has given this very shaky starting pitching staff the positive

(32:21):
lift that that they were looking for in his first
four starts. The kid's been tremendous. But can I continue
the last three and a half weeks of the season
and into the playoffs. And Jonah Tong was good on
on Friday Night, But I.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
Know, and I gotta plug Mendoza for getting in through
that fifth because he was at ninety one pitches and
you know, of that next batter got on, he would
have not been eligible for I think they were gonna
take him out right after that.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
Back I think you're right. I think you're right. I
think Sean Maniya and Cardi Singer are not healthy. I mean,
you go back to the that date that we all
look at, especially for this baseball season, this date always
pops up June thirteenth. Well on June twelfth, when Alonso

(33:09):
made that terrible throat to Sanga and he pulled the hamstring,
and up until that point, Sanga was lights out. And
I was watching the s n Y pregame interview on
Sunday on the pregame show, and they and they asked
Sang about his you know, why he's pitching so poorly,
and he says he's not getting power behind his pitches,

(33:31):
which leads me to believe that that hamstring, strained muscle
pull is still not one hundred and Sean Manaiah, you know,
with the floating chips in his in his left elbow,
I have a feeling that when the season's over, Manaia
is gonna need surgery in that elbow. Obviously, I'm not

(33:53):
I'm not a norther pic orthopedic doctor, but that could be.
But I just don't And their short outings are killing
the Mets bullpen. You can't win. I don't think this
is sustainable. So thank god. Nolan McLain has been I
mean fantastic, he's been fantastic, but again he's only had

(34:14):
four starts.

Speaker 2 (34:15):
Which our own Ryan Pigano broke in the news on
with Us a couple of weeks ago. And then McLain
goes out and throws that gem of a game to
start his MLB debut. I know I brought the term
call ups of the year, called of the year last year.
Maybe these two are the call ups of the year
for the Mets this year.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
Well, Alex, Alex, I hope, I hope you're right. I mean,
so we'll see. I mean, they go into Cincinnati with
it'll either be a five or four game lead. The
one thing that you want to do in Cincinnati, Yeah,
you want to win every game, you want to win
two out of three. But the one thing you can't
do in Cincinnati is get swept. So they got If

(34:54):
they lose all three games, that means they lose three
games in the standings. But even if they just win
one game, it makes a whole world of difference. You know,
you only lose one, you only really lose one game
in the standings.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
So so.

Speaker 1 (35:10):
It's an important weekend. This is this is game three
of a sixteen game stretch that is a killer three
with UH Detroit, is done three with Cincinnati this weekend,
four in Philly, come home to three with the Texas Rangers,
who are hot, then three at home with the San
Diego Padres. A sixteen game stretch that is very, very difficult.

(35:34):
The Mets turn out of lock for the playoffs. Yet
unless that pitching staff turns around, amazing.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
They are at that third spot precipice and they're they're
they're solidified there at the moment. But but this team
deserves to be higher. But we talked about this in
the preseason in spring drink, You and I talked about
the pitching is not going to be there to carry
this hitting. And it's just it's shown. And I don't know,

(36:01):
I saw Helsley the other night. I don't exactly get
the complaints, but I guess Standick and Helsley have been
in sort of you know, it's been bad with both
of them, is what I've been reading online? Is that
is that true?

Speaker 1 (36:13):
Well? The Ryan Helsley in effectiveness has been shocking to me.
Here's a guy who's who sayed forty nine games last
year for the Cardinals, and he's pitching. He's pitching poorly.
He's given a five home runs in his brief time
with the Mets. And I mean, I thought when the
Mets made that trace, my god, what a steal. I

(36:36):
think it might be in his head. Alex allegedly he's
tipping pitches. I assume he is. I mean, the other night,
as Gary said on the telecast, Gary Cohen said on
telecast six pitches, the Tigers aggressively swung at four to
six pitches and put it in play like they knew
what was coming, so they got to get him straight.

(36:59):
At this point, I don't even know if he's worthy
to be put on the postseason roster if they if
they make this postseason, and I think they will. I
do think the six NL teams and I actually think
the twelve teams are are. And even though Seattle can't
for whatever reason, Seattle cannot win on the road, and
they're they're falling back. They're allowing some other teams to

(37:23):
think that they're they're playoff contenders.

Speaker 2 (37:27):
But uh, and you know it's interesting because he it
is true what you said. I think it was you
or someone else that said, if cal doesn't produce.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
The well again, Alex we said the deadline on that
deadline show that we did not all the time. When
you make these trades and you get like Seattle brought
in Soarez, I think he's hit only two home runs
or three home runs since he went to Seattle. I
think he's batting right around two hundred. He's not producing
like he did in Arizona. He went from a when

(37:58):
he went from a favorable hit ballpark, uh to Seattle,
which is not a favorable hitting ballpark.

Speaker 2 (38:04):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
Hellsley has pitched poorly. Jake Bird pitch poorly. He's in
the minor leagues. And I'm sure we can go through
some other you know, some other teams that make trades
at the deadline at right off the top of my head,
I can't think of. So you don't know. You make
these trades, but for two months you're up. You're upstaging
their lives too. Remember these are human beings, these aren't robots.

(38:28):
So a guy like Helsley, who's been in Saint Louis
for his entire career, now comes to New York for
a couple of months, not knowing where he's going to
be next year because he's gonna be a free agent
and he's pitching terribly for the Mets, and I thought
that was a tremendous trade for the Mets. But you know,
we have to wait and see now real quickly before
we we wrap it up. The Yankees are hitting home

(38:51):
runs at a tremendous pace. I mean, it counts for
the majority of their offense. They still can't build runs
except if they're hitting home runs on a consistent basis.
I think their starting pitching has been good. Their bullpen's
been up and down, and they take advantage when they
The Yankees are very good. The Yankees are very good
against the bad teams.

Speaker 2 (39:11):
I know, it's like that Cars song. They got just
what they needed when they face the Nationals and the
White Sox, so they couldn't close out the sweep. However, however,
I think to give them competents going into yesterday. And
of course it's the Astros which start out this twelve
game stretch, Lou, I don't think we saw the difficulty

(39:34):
of first place, but it's here. It's right there, as
Aaron Bonelez, they right in front of them now, so oh.

Speaker 1 (39:39):
It absolutely is. And as you know, I'm I never
trust the Blue Jays, as I've told you all year,
And yeah, you want to finish first and have one
or two best records so you don't have to you
don't have to play in that you know, Russian roulette
two out of three first round, which the Mets have
had to do. Maybe it looks like this year for

(40:01):
sure if they make it, which it'll be another two
out of three. But ironically, the two out of three
at home they lost two games to one. The two
out of three on the road last year they won.
So who the heck knows what's gonna happen. But I
just don't think the Mets have a su staind open
pitching staff to win, you know, fourth series, to win
thirteen games over a month. I don't know if the

(40:23):
Yankees have the hitting.

Speaker 2 (40:26):
To do that.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
Yeah they're hitting home runs at a tremendous pace now,
but as we know, postseason pitching is a little bit different.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
And tell me twice, I remember in that Game five
after I don't want to say Roberts let them win
Game four, but I mean he didn't. He wasn't. He
was very relaxed in Game four, like it just whatever,
it was was because he kind of knew that he
had the next night. But let me tell you, when
he locked in on Game five, he shut them down

(40:52):
through his bullpen maneuvers. I mean it was amazing because
they had scored those five runs and then nothing else.
Everybody played theirs. I just think it was the Dodgers
also shutting them out in perfect fashion the rest of
the way.

Speaker 1 (41:06):
Oh yeah, I can't disagree with you on that. But
obviously the gauntlet to get to the World Series again
in the American League is not as sough as the
National League. You know, I have no I thought the
Dodgers would be more dominant. They're not. I don't know
if they could turn it on come playoff time. They

(41:29):
probably will get the first round by It's gonna be
interesting to see next next Monday, Tuesday, one no, no,
the week after they play Philadelphia three game series, and
it's gonna be interesting to see those two teams play
each other. So, but obviously the Phillies can't beat the

(41:50):
Mets in Phillies in city field.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
And Phillies not had that banner year either.

Speaker 1 (41:54):
I mean, yeah, well, Alex, I don't think they can
win the World Series. He's without the guy who was
the best pitcher in the National League in Zach Wheeler,
and that was devastating. That's devastating to the Phillies college.

Speaker 2 (42:10):
Schwarmer can only hit how many homers in the game.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
Yeah, it only takes him so far. Absolutely, by the way,
he is an l m VP.

Speaker 2 (42:18):
I don't see anybody else in that category.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
I would vote for Schwarver for MVP right now. The
season ended today.

Speaker 2 (42:24):
And you know what, I love the Yankee fan base,
but give cals due. The guy's an MVP this year.

Speaker 1 (42:31):
Yeah, and I would vote for him for MVP. He's
not only he's a switching in catcher, and he's a
great defensive catcher. And he won the Platinum Award last year,
the Platinum Glove, which is emblematic of the best defensive
player regardless of position in the American League. So we'll

(42:53):
see how these last three and a half weeks go
to gonna be very interesting three and a half weeks.
A couple of things. I know we're geting aead of
ourselves into the offseason, but this is just me as
a Met fan. The Mets should try to get Paul
Skans this year before somebody else tries to get them
next year, I would. I would put together a package
to get Schemes here. I really would.

Speaker 2 (43:17):
And now now there was a claim Yankees tried to
a Spencer Jones or something I don't know.

Speaker 1 (43:22):
Well, again, I would trade Spencer Jones. He's a prospect
for of course, Paul Skins is the second best pitcher
in the National League this year behind Wheeler, and now
that Wheeler's done, my opinion, he's the best picture in
the National League. The Pirates are not going to sign
him to uh uh to an extension. They're gonna trade
him at one point, whether it's two years from now.

(43:43):
I know he has what four years before he becomes
a free agent. He's not They're not going to let
him go to free agency. They're gonna trade him. If
I was the Mets, I would make a big time
effort to get him, and I would make a big
time effort to get and you don't have to probably
give up as much to get san Ley al Contra,
who came off Tommy John did not have the first

(44:05):
a good first four months and has had a very
very good last five starts. If I was the Mets,
I would aggressively go after one of these guys.

Speaker 2 (44:16):
Well that note, On that note, we gotta role here
at the One Leg Up Alex Sports Desk if you will,
but always love chatting with you. Let's catch up next
week as things come out in game week one. We
always do those Monday recaps. You gotta get back to
that fanfl I want to do them. Call me. We

(44:37):
will make that happen with lou Terminello. Terminello's take a
lot more to cover down the road here. It's only
September three more to come right, louis

Speaker 1 (44:45):
Right, Alex, Alex, thank you so much for having me
