Speaker 1 (00:00):
And welcome back to Overkilling. If it sounds slightly different,
that's because the first five of these we recorded a
first four first four. You're right, we're on number five,
but we recorded, you know, yesterday, and then we did
some killing fifteen and I'm spicy today. I'm not tired
like I was yesterday, and my nose is not clogged
(00:20):
like yesterday. So guess what, bitches, it's gonna be hot.
So yes, hi, welcome to Overkilling fifteen minutes where we
go into a deep dive. And if we're on part five,
If you're you don't know what the hell we're doing,
why are you on part five? Go back and watch
part one, and then go back and watch the Sutcliffe one,
(00:40):
and don't watch any of them. Listen mostly because this
is audio. I'm AYJ Carrey, I'm Sam Rossi, and we
are going to continue Andre Chiccatillo today and previously he
killed a bunch of people. The cops are kind of
on his trail, but only in so far as that
they're on the trail of a killer. They've arter released
him from as a suspect once now, so let's hop
(01:05):
to August eighteenth, nineteen eighty six. A body was found
buried in a shallow grave on a collective farm in
bataish and if you recall, I can do Spanish and
I can do Japanese, but I'm not really good at
cyrillic names. The wounds bore the signature mutilations of the
(01:31):
Red Ripper. The victim was identified as eighteen year old's
court secretary Irena Pogolova. Her body was cut open from
neck to her genitalia, one breast was removed and her
eyes cut out. This is why I don't like doing overkilling.
I like when it's just he did some six shit
like Edmund Kemper, which should be coming up or has
(01:53):
already been up or will be up on killing fifteen.
As the killer made serious effort to bury the body,
was it serious though it was a shallow grave, Well,
that's effort. He made a serious effort, as if he
showed some effort. Yeah, basically. Some investigations speculated this explained
(02:13):
the sudden lack of bodies found, as the victims were
murdered in Rostov Oblast in nineteen eighty five, and eighty
six were killed during July and August. Some investigators also
accepted the theory that the killer had relocated to another
part of the Soviet Union and was returning to the
Rostov Oblast only in the summer. The Rostov police compiled
(02:35):
bulletins to be sent to all forces throughout the Soviet Union.
These described wound patterns the unsubdused and requested feedback from
any police force which had murders matching these. In eighty seven,
Chikatilo murdered three times. For each murder, he was on
a business trip far from Rostov Oblast, and none of
(02:56):
them were linked to the Rostoff manhunt. On May sixteenth,
nineteen eighty seven, Chikaitillo met twelve year old Olga Markhankov
at a train station in the ural town of Redva.
He was lured from the station with the promise of
sharing a meal with Chikatillo at his datcha, which is
(03:17):
a seasonal home. He was then murdered in a woodland
area close to the station. His body was not discovered
until nineteen ninety one. In July, he killed twelve year
old Ivan Bilovsky in Ukrainian city of Zepporazia. On September fifteenth,
he killed sixteen year old Juri Tereshanak a vocational student
(03:38):
in a wooded area on the outskirts of Leningrad, which
is now Saint Petersburg. In April nineteen eighty eight, Chikatillo
loured an unknown woman off a train in Krasny Sullen.
He bound her hands behind her back and stuffed her
mouth with dirt before cutting off her nose and inflicting
a number of knife wounds to her neckid Zillo bludgeoned
(04:00):
her with a slab of concrete. Her body was found
on April sixth. Detectives did note that the knife wounds
matched the signature of their unsub. However, she was killed
with a slab of concrete, had not been disemboweled, and
her murderer had not done anything with the eyes. Investigators
did hesitate to say that it was their unsub at
(04:21):
the time. Then in May he murdered nine year old
Alexei Vanko in the Ukrainian city of Ilevais. The boy's
wounds left no doubt that their unsub had killed again.
On July fourteenth, Chikatilla murdered fifteen year old Yevgeny Mirichtov
at the Lenskov station near Shatshni. He murdered. His murder
(04:46):
was linked, although his remains were found April eighty nine.
His remains were largely skeletal, but the autopsy showed that
he had over thirty knife wounds. On February twenty eighth,
eighty nine, Chikatillo struck again. He murdered sixteen year old
Tatiana Risova in his daughter's vacant apartment. He dismembered her
and hid the remains in a sower nearby. As there
(05:09):
was no body, police did not link the case. Between
May and August, Chikatilla murdered four more, three of whom
were killed in Rostov and Shatshni. Only two of the
murders were linked. With resurfacing of bodies decisively linked to
the man hunt, and with majority of the victims being
discovered close to railways, investigators assigned numerous plain closed officers
(05:30):
to discreetly film and photograph passengers on the train throughout
Rostov Oblasts. Several trains were also fitted with hidden cameras.
The intention was that they would catch the victim with
the killer. On January fourteenth, nineteen ninety, Chikatillo lord eleven
year old Andre Kravensko from the Shatshni theater. He was
(05:51):
told Chikatillo had bootleg Western films. His body was found
the following month, on March seventh, nineteen ninety third, ten
year old Yorislav Makarov from I don't like how RHYMI
names Russians are. Sometimes sometimes yeah, they have good mouthfeel
sometimes other times they feel like you're being punched in
the road. On March seventh, nineteen ninety thired ten year
(06:15):
old Yuoslav Makarov from a Rostov train station. He eviscerated.
His evescerated body was found the following day. On March eleventh,
the leaders of the investigation, headed by Fetisov, held a
meeting to discuss progress of the manhunt. Fetisov was under
intense pressure from the public, the press, and the Soviet
(06:37):
Ministry of the Interior. Both Fetisov and Viktor Berukhov had
devoted over seven years in trying to catch the unsub
The intensity of the manhunt in the years up to
nineteen eighty four had receded to a group had receded
to a degree between nineteen eighty five and eighty seven,
(06:58):
when Chikatilo had committed only three murders investigators were able
to conclusively link to the killer. However, by March nineteen
ninety as further murders were linked to the man hunt.
In addition, following the introduction of greater media presence as
a result of Glassnost, which was a concept of openness
and transparency by Russian leadership at the time, the Soviet
(07:18):
news media was much less restricted than it had been
in the earlier years of the hunt and was able
to devote extensive publicity to the case. Fetisov had noted
laxity in areas of the investigation and warned that jobs
are on the line if the murderer was not caught soon.
I mean, if you've got a decade into murder investigation,
(07:39):
you're going on at least one point someone should have
gone dude, it's been a decade. Yeah, I mean, granted, again,
Russia is Russia, do you know? With the media and
Glassnost was actually really interesting. You know what. This isn't
a Russian history lesson, not but it is something interesting.
Well I think it is because it is a matter
(07:59):
of after you know, fifty ish years of Soviet control,
like really hard lines. You know, the government has to okay,
anything that goes onto any news media, right if not
directly control it. That suddenly Glassnost came around, and it
really was a matter of okay, now, just don't make
(08:23):
us look back kind of a thing, yep. And even
then it's a neat thing to see sort of happening
in reversing the US anyways. On April fourth, nineteen ninety,
Chikatila learned thirty one year old Liubov ziaev Zuyeva off
a train and murdered her in a wooded land near
(08:46):
doun Lensko station. Her body was found August twenty fourth.
On July twenty eighth, you learned thirteen year old Victor
Petrov away from Rostov train station. He was murdered in
Rostov's botanical gardens. On August fourteenth, Chikatilo murdered eleven year
old Ivan Foum in the reeds near Novotuasque's beach. A
(09:09):
massive police operation was sparked by more bodies appearing, with
many of the victims being discovered at railway stations again
on one rail route through Rostov Oblast. Berkhoff suggested a
plan to saturate all stations in the region with an
obvious uniformed police presence which the unsubbed would notice. This
was in hope to discourage the unsub from striking in
(09:31):
those stations and then uncover and then under cover agents
patrol smaller areas and less busy stations where the activities
would be far more noticeable. The plan was approved and
both sets of officers were instructed to question any adult
male in the company of a young woman or child
and note his name and passport number. Police deployed three
(09:55):
hundred and sixty men at all stations in Rostov Oblast,
but only under cover officers were posted at the three
smallest stations on the route through the oblast where the
unsub had struck most frequently Kondreicha, Doland Lanska's and Soso
Step and Leso Step in effort to force the UNSEP
to strike at one of these stations. The operation was
(10:18):
started on October twenty seventh, nineteen ninety. October thirtieth, police
discover the body of sixteen year old Madam Grodmov at
Dunalaskin station. The wounds on his body matched the known
signature and he was murdered and he had been murdered
October seventeenth, The same day Gromov's body was found, Chikatilo
(10:39):
lord sixteen year old Victor Tishenko off of a train
at Kirpitchnya. Tichenko's body was found November three. On November sixth,
nineteen ninety, Chickatola murdered twenty two year old Zvetlana Koristik
in a woods near don Lenska station. Returning to the platform.
(10:59):
He was no TuS by undercover officer Igor Rbekhov, who
observed Chikatilo approach a well and wash his hands and
face when he approached the station. Ribakov noted Chikatillo's coat
had gross had grass and soil stains on the elbows.
He also noted Chikatilo had a small red smear on
his cheek and what appeared to be a severe wound
(11:21):
to one of his fingers. To Ribakov, he looked suspicious.
The only reason to enter the woodlands near Dolenskov's station
at the time of the year was to gather wild mushrooms,
which was a popular pastime in Russia. But Chikatilo was
not dressed like a typical forager. He was more formal Moreover,
he had a nylon sports bag, which was unsuitable for
(11:43):
carrying mushrooms. Rbakov stopped Chikatillo and checked his papers, but
had no legal reason to arrest him. When Rybakov returned
to his office, he filed a routine report, including the
name of the person he stopped and the possible blood
smear on his cheek. However, as we've now started heating
up in the case with the cops noticing him again,
(12:06):
it is time to say that was fifteen minutes roughly,
so it's time to say good bye, and not good
bye but see you next week. As we continue, hopefully
one day the police will catch his son of a
bitch passed me. In a couple of weeks, we'll find
out
