Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome in everybody Padrey's hot tub group therapy on a
night we really need it. We might need actually actually
licensed therapists after tonight because our emotions are all over
the place. Hello, Rayfie Canter.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Dude, what the fuck was that? Like that was really weird.
That was quite bizarre. I'm getting such a sensible take.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
I mean, like.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
I'm getting text from people. You know, I watched the
beginning of the game. I had to go to a thing,
I come out of the thing, and then it's like
Dave Shilt or Dave Shilt. I mean it's like that's
some fan fiction. Mike Shilt and Dave Roberts are like
I'm getting texts of like there's like already shitty lip
reads of them, and like apparently Shilt was saying like
(01:00):
you want to go and Roberts just like meet me
in the parking lot.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Oh yeah, there was totally they were telling each other
they're going to kick each other's asses.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
So it's just like I hate to be a broken
record because we've been having this conversation for years now,
but the whole like Dodgers like we don't care about
the Padres thing. But then like they get they also
get so agitated for all of these games. It's crazy.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Both of these teams need to stop with the fucking
lie that it's just another series. This is the most
heated rivalry in Major League Baseball.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Yeah, what can we just like start bringing people up here,
because like.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
I just want to say one thing. I I've got
a little bit of a fucking soapbox. I'd like to
get on. I'd like to get on on a double apple,
a full apple, if you will. At the end, I
was here in watch party and I said in the
same thing to you guys in the text that I
didn't care if the move by Robert Torrez to bean
(02:10):
Otani on a three to zero account cost them the game.
That was strategic. Torres was trying not to get thrown
out of the game. Just two nights ago, the umpires
didn't throw out a guy after he hit Jose Iglesias
and knocked him out of the game. They still left
that picture in after warnings had been issued. So Robert
Torres was trying to get tactical. He was trying not
(02:31):
to get thrown out of the game. But I don't
give a flying fuck if he had been in the
Padres lost this game because Fernando Tatis Junior has been
getting targeted by the Dodgers and most of Major League
Baseball for years now. The entire strategy, the tactical decision
teams have been making in regards to Fernando Tatis Junior
(02:54):
is to buzz him up and in with velocity. How
many times have we seen him throw his bat and
hit the dirt because the dude doesn't want to break
a bone in his hand, because he has to have
an actual cohesive strategy to not getting beamed by other teams,
because then they want to set him out on the
outer third and have him swing and miss at a
slider off the plate. That has been their strategy. That
(03:16):
is what they have been trying to do, and the
Dodgers do it more than everybody and the Padres. And
I was thinking about this the other night, rave because
I posted a meme of a Mexican singer who like
tragically was killed by the cartel. And I don't want
to get too deep and too dark into it, but
(03:36):
I used a real world violent celegrity in our watch
party and I really regretted it, like immediately, because I
don't want baseball to be more violent. I don't want that.
I don't want the macho testosterone fuel bullshit like running
the game. It's not the eighties. I know the Braves
Padres fight from nineteen eighty four is fun, and we
look at it from a menu if we look at
(03:57):
it like nostalgic and like, oh, what a tough game.
But I don't need it. I don't need the macho bullshit.
But the fact is that this has been a tactical
decision by teams for years and years on. Fernando and
the Padres have never done jack shit about it. They've
never retaliated. They've always tried to be the bigger team.
Mike Shildt has always tried to be a professional, and
(04:18):
the Dodgers did it twice this series. They did it twice,
and then Dave Roberts has the audacity to come up
in forearm shiver, Mike shilt when he's trying to tell
him to cut out that bullshit. Man. I wish, uh,
you know, I wish it were different, But going after
Otani was the only sensible thing if you want to
(04:40):
protect Fernando Tatis Junior, because if he's hurt, if that
pitch tonight, put him out for any amount of time,
the Padres are fucked. And if a future pitch does it,
the Padres are fucked. He is their number one hitter.
He may not be going great all the time, but
he's like, are not going great all the time, you know.
(05:01):
So I felt it was absolutely required that the Padres
protect Fernando Tattist Junior and do it tonight. You know,
it wasn't the best decision for win probability, he added,
you know, with the tying run at the plate, you
know what, man, fuck it. Sometimes you have to lose
(05:24):
the battle to win a war. And if this is
the rallying moment for the Padres to maybe you know,
look at this season as something that needs to happen
now to get some urgency in their actions in terms
of the roster and just in the dugout, you know what.
So be it. And I just wanted to get that
(05:46):
out because you know, a lot of people thought it
was bad strategy for winning the game. I don't care.
This is this has been a long term thing that
teams have been doing forever and it needs to stop.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Yeah, I here here, dude, I am glad you got
up on your double apple, right there. And what I'm
hearing you say is you can't make an omelet tani
without breaking some eggs. So I've been sitting on that
for about three minutes. So let's hit the boards. What
do you say? Is this thing on Escondido?
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Do you hear me?
Speaker 4 (06:27):
We're going south of the border to our friends the opener,
friar goose.
Speaker 5 (06:33):
How are you, oh, capadres?
Speaker 6 (06:38):
You know, guys, it's it's it's closer to midnight over
here than I would like.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
What what a what a great game, what a strange game?
And you know, could not agree more with Chris Reid.
Speaker 6 (06:49):
I mean, had it coming, you had to do it,
but all be honest, guys, I didn't see it coming.
Did you guys see that one coming? Did you think
Suarez is gonna take out your plunk otani?
Speaker 5 (06:59):
And that's it. I did it.
Speaker 6 (07:01):
And when I saw it, I laughed out loud. I
go yeah, man. And and with you, Chris Reid, I
didn't care the outcome. I detached myself from the outcome
and just said that was a gutsy move and that
was the right move because Dave Roberts took out Mookie
and Freddie and will so so was was you guys
(07:24):
think O Tani was a sacrificial lamb?
Speaker 5 (07:26):
That's my question. Guys, good night, Let's go Padres.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
You said it, dude, the Dodgers are so freaking arrogant.
Then in a five nothing game, a game that's super winnable, Uh,
they pulled their best players. You know that That is
like pulling your starters in the NFL up ten points.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Yeah, it's I mean the keyk thing last week and
then this week it's it's truly truly bizarre, and I mean,
like the beef is so goofy in these weird ways.
And I saw someone posted this on Reddit before the game,
where if you've never been a Dodger stadium, they have
(08:13):
plaques all around the outfield bleachers of big or famous
or you know sometimes like long distance home runs that
have been hit. And there was one for the time
that Fernando Tazzis Junior hit the home run like over
the pavilion and like out of the stadium, and someone
took the plaque down. So I don't know if it
(08:37):
was a fan who stole it or if it was
like the organization, but either way, it's just goofy. It's
just goofy and weird that people, it's so caught up
on all of these like little tiny small things. I
don't get it, but I think that this I have
(08:59):
a question for you, Christen, for you Friars, since you're
still up here with us. Oh, Tani wasn't hit right
out of the gate. It was a three to zero
count and he got hit. Do you think that those
three pitches were intentionally off the plate to uh to
throw the scent or do you think that that was
(09:20):
just a coincidence.
Speaker 6 (09:25):
So I think if if they wanted to hit him
right off the bat, you know, maybe Reynolds could have
taken win for the team. You know, like like the
way the Dodgers did bring make a guy to his
you know, major league debut and plunk Tatis, that would
have made more sense. I really think that Bobby Bullets
said fuck it, you know, I'm gonna walk the guy.
Speaker 5 (09:46):
Anyway. I think he was brought in. I think he
was genuinely brought in to close out the game. Guys.
Speaker 6 (09:52):
That's my that's my read on it. I didn't see
him going head hunting in that at bat. I don't
know what you think, Chris.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Like I said, man, I think that was one hundred intentional.
I think Robert Suarez was like, oh, look how wild
I am meanwhile throwing lots of strikes. Then you know,
throughout his other at that like look at me, Oh,
I can't find the zone. Oh I'm gonna throw it
right in between the numbers of Sho he O Tani
(10:23):
Baseball's Golden Boy. I do think it was intentional. And
you know, if I'm putting myself in on Pire shoes,
I might do the same thing. But I completely understand
Manny Machado, and like the broadcast pointed out like lobby
to say, hey, you guys, we had this situation two
nights ago, and you guys chose not to throw anybody
(10:44):
out now just because it's show. Hey, is that is that?
What it is? Is because we dared throw at the Dodgers,
you know, the guys who were supposed to win all this.
I think it was intentional, and I was absolutely rooting
for it. And again that's not me. I'm not I
don't want this stuff in baseball. I'd love it to
be out of the game. I'd love that if you
(11:05):
if somebody gets hit by a pitch, the hit better
goes on second base, Like, I think that should be
a major League rule. I think it would do a
lot to put more balls in the zone that are
meant to go in the zone. I think it would
help offense. And uh, but tonight, you know, damn my principals, boys,
I guess I had the blood rage.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Well farar Gus, thanks for joining us tonight. Anything else
to add before we bring up some more folks?
Speaker 5 (11:37):
Uh, that is it, guys.
Speaker 6 (11:38):
But but what about you know, you guys think that
the Dodgers Padres rivalry went to a next level tonight
because I can't think of any of the two teams
that have anything like this going on, not now, not
this season, not in recent memory.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
What do you think about that? And I'm out guys?
Speaker 4 (11:54):
Thanks, thanks Fargus. Yeah, I mean I think it's it's
kind of, without a doubt, the most contentious rivalry in
baseball right now. You know, you can say whatever you
want about history, you can say whatever, but like, it's like,
rarely do I watch, Like, I don't know if you
guys watched the two thousand and four Comeback documentary about
(12:15):
the Red Sox that was on Netflix. Highly recommend for
anyone that's out there whether or not you are a
Red Sox fan. But it's three episodes and it's just
it's nostalgia for that time, and it's just a reminder
of what a rivalry at a fever pitch is like.
And the thing about those teams is that those guys
(12:41):
actively hated each other, like the Red Sox and the
Yankees and three and four actively disliked each other, like
Pedro Martinez wanted to kill Don Zimmer, like that was
a that was a fact, and like these guys don't
like each other, like Mike Shilt doesn't like Dave Roberts.
(13:01):
Like I don't think that that is a like weird
like Kabooki theater sort of thing. That is like that
they're doing like k fabe and then they're going in
like you know, like WW style, and then you know,
once the cameras are off that they're like hugging each
other and like whatever. No, I think I think that
there is a weird thing. I think Shilt certainly still
(13:23):
feels like he has something to prove as a manager,
and he takes umbrage with Dave Roberts putting in Kyky
Hernanez in the sixth inning and pulling his guys in
the game, uh, you know, and and and taking all
those guys out and and being like, you know what, no,
I'm good because we got a ring and like where whatever,
and like blah blah blahlah blah, and I'm Dave fucking
(13:44):
Roberts and fuck you. And like, I think Shilt like
takes umbrage with that, And uh, I think Shilt absolutely
needed to do what he did tonight because he's been
he has been consistent from the beginning of the season
that guys need to stop. The league needs to stop
throwing in on Fernando tacI Junior. They have to stop
doing it. They have to stop doing it. And so
(14:05):
when they do that, and it's the second time he's
been hit, like you gotta lose your fucking shit, like
you have to, you have to do it. And so look,
we haven't done a show this whole series, because this
whole series has been really frustrating to watch. And you know,
I said going into it that losing three of four
(14:27):
but not getting swept is not the biggest deal in
the world. And I stand by that statement. And I
would go so far as to say, if you're going
to lose three games, lose the three the first three games,
and win the last one. And I think, especially after
everything that happened, like not trying to like, you know,
for breeze a turd here, but like it, I think
(14:50):
it matters that the Padres won tonight's game specifically and
that they won tonight's game after everything that happened as
a motivator, as a spark plug, as this that and whatever,
because like we're still in this June slock, like off
day not in sight. We got the Royals, we got
the Nationals, and then is the our off day or
(15:12):
are we are?
Speaker 1 (15:12):
We?
Speaker 4 (15:13):
Do we still have another game after that?
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Oh? No, it keeps going. They have the weekends against
the Royals and Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday against the Nationals.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Yeah yeah yeah, but then do we get them off
day after that?
Speaker 1 (15:26):
Yeah? I think we got the Thursday.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Okay, but so we they needed something to carry them
through the next week and I'm hoping, I'm hoping that
that this could be it. Chris, anything to add on
that before we keep bringing up some people.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Yeah, they have the off day Thursday. I just wanted
to confirm because that was my suspicion. They basically had
their coming off of two, four, six, eight, ten, twelve
thirteen game stretch of every playing every day, so like
it's getting atricious. I would not be surprised if Sean
(16:05):
Reynolds goes down after his performance today. I have no
idea who the next man up, because we've talked about
a little bit. The Padre's bullpen in the minor leagues
is not looking good. Like we're in Ron Maranaccio territory. Uh,
not to be confused with the karate kid, who I
don't think is pitching anymore, but it doesn't look good.
(16:28):
And like maybe Bryce Johnson's hurt, it's it's getting Finn buddy,
And yeah, let's let's go ahead and bring up I
think it is Padrey's Massachis who had his hand up earlier.
Speaker 4 (16:41):
Yeah, let's bringing Party's Mascus up. And just because I
haven't said his name on the podcast, Sander Bogart's who
I believe added like forty points to his ops tonight alone.
Speaker 3 (16:50):
And yeah, but in fact, if you say Xander Bogarts
three times, then he'll randomly appear in this grip therapy.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Give I'll give him a freaking hug tonight.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
Man, hey, Chris, I just wanted to say I really
loved your rant to begin the show. You just showed
such moral clarity and just righteous indignation, and it really
fired me up.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
My friend.
Speaker 3 (17:19):
It is so much so that I like kind of
forgot my train of thought for I raised my hand.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
So props to you, my man. I appreciate that. Dude,
I you know, I don't I don't dig the macho
the macho stuff. It's never been me. But this is strategy, Like,
this is what the Dodgers are deploying. His strategy to
get to Fernando and get in his head and make
him swing it pitches off the plate. That's what they want.
(17:48):
And like Rafie pointed out, Mike Schilt has talked about
this publicly, and they keep fucking doing it. Yeah, I
mean I'm here.
Speaker 3 (18:05):
Yeah, And you know, I think most of the discord
would agree that Dave Roberts is somewhat of a bad
actor and doesn't always put forth a demeanor that's really
agreeable with, sort of like how the league goes. And
we all know what he did with the forget the adjective,
(18:29):
but something sling and it was it's just so apparently
clear that he likes to have his cake and eat
it too. He likes to you know, blame other teams
for outlandish displays, but also, you know, kind of just
(18:49):
play the innocent bystander when he's clearly complicit.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
You know, I don't mind.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
He's a wrestling character.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Yeah, yeah, like I like that. No, you're good, dude,
you said it. He's like a w W guy. I
can appreciate the entertainment value of it. When you come
rushing out of the dugout and throw a forearm into
the opposing manager, who's just who's saying, stay off my guy. No, No,
you've you've broken You've broken your own uh k fabe
(19:22):
or whatever. Like you've made it real at that point,
and then you can just go go, you know, go
piss off. And I definitely in to view it from
a little bit different lens now that he's you know,
gone out and physically bumped into another guy that that
really pissed me off. And yeah, just fuck Dave Roberts tonight.
(19:46):
Just that's that's where I'm at.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Absolutely, And then before I go, Fernando should switch to
H three True Outcomes.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
I'm out, Oh.
Speaker 4 (19:58):
Little little Chilli Pepper in the poky jar on the
way out. I love that. I mean, well, yeah, that's
I like, don't disagree. I think this team, the idea
behind three true outcomes is like you're sacrificing contact for
slug and I. You know, the pod knows where I
stand on this right now, so I'm not going to
(20:21):
add anything else. We've got a few people that are
waiting to come up, but one of them is a
big patron. It's a frequent contributor to this show. It's
Eddie Bogarts. Hey, it's your night tonight, Eddie.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
My night. But nobody will ever know.
Speaker 6 (20:42):
Where do I first?
Speaker 7 (20:43):
I want to say, I hope is okay.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
Fuck the Dodgers.
Speaker 7 (20:51):
Fuck the Dodgers their pieces of ship and Dodgers fans
will always say it's not a rivalry, But what do
you call it?
Speaker 1 (21:00):
It was?
Speaker 7 (21:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
It was crazy, but yeah, I totally.
Speaker 7 (21:04):
Forgot Bogars was four for four because it was such
a wild night.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
Hey, your first two points were very very good. I
must say as we welcome up to the stage. Craig Elston, Hello, guys,
I just wanted to hear what Mike Shilty, shilt Ball
coach of the San Diego Padres had to say, and
(21:31):
he said the right things.
Speaker 8 (21:32):
He said, enough is enough. He said it didn't care
if it was intentional. He said, you're messing with guys
years and careers. More importantly, he said Tatis was not
hit in a good place, that the X ray was negative,
but he was hit in a bad place. And he
(21:52):
sounded worried to me and angry and very very much angry,
you know, and he f you Dave Roberts pretty hard.
And you know, he says he probably knows, you know whatever,
he's gonna get a fine or whatever. But he said
he also said something. And I heard your rant as well, Chris.
I thought it was really good, and he said, people,
(22:16):
you know, I can back it up with evidence. Teams
I managed don't have altercations like this because teams I
managed don't throw at people. So that backs up part
of what you were saying too. You know that you've
been waiting for that, You've been looking for it. It's
not something that he wants to do, but a line
(22:36):
was crossed, and you know, obviously swore as to what
he did intentionally. I hope they don't suspend him. I
think that would be a ridiculous way for MLB to
look at all of this. But ugh, I fucking hate
(22:57):
playing the Dodgers, man, It's it's so obnoxious. This team
is obnoxious and.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
Uh despicable tonight pulling out their starters.
Speaker 8 (23:09):
Yeah, despicable in many ways, and uh just uh they
do a lot of ugly things.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
And this was ugly. This was ugly and it.
Speaker 8 (23:26):
Almost worked out for them. And that's what got me
so upset. And by the way, Chris, like, I just
want to back up, like I had absolutely no problem
at all with Swore his hitting Otani, no problem at all.
I would have had no problem with them not facing
Otani by getting the other players out, you know, by
(23:49):
not giving up a hit to Tommy Edmund. I would
have been fine with the with the home plate umpire
calling strike three two different times against Haysung Kim when
he let strikes go by his balls kind of made
up for it.
Speaker 1 (24:03):
I think I completely forgot about that.
Speaker 8 (24:08):
Yeah, made up for it on the Yuki at bat though,
on our favor, So I guess bully for fucking him,
you know, just to to do a parting gift like that.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
It's it's not.
Speaker 8 (24:27):
Just the ridiculous accumulation of the tease getting hit, which
Shilt articulated and named the numbers, you know, like listed
it out how many times he's been hit by LA,
how many times he's been hit by other teams, like
LA goes after to tease. There's no question, but it's
(24:47):
five spit. You're you're getting cooked, five goose. You've pulled
your your stars, your field players, you've conceded the game.
You've put in some named little and you're gonna fucking
parting gift to tease the one game that you win.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
In the series.
Speaker 8 (25:10):
You're gonna give him the ninth inning drilling to be like,
oh little little parting gift, you know, miss you later. Uh,
who knows, we might miss the teas for the Royal series,
might miss the tease for the next two months.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
You don't know.
Speaker 8 (25:26):
He got drilled on the hand, it's fucking ridiculous, ridiculous.
The timing of that was obscene on their part, and
the fact that it turned out to get to the
point where Otani came to the plate and Roberts wore
(25:46):
as I, you know, Mike Schiltz in the clubhouse. Who
knows did they send the little Birdie along to me,
you would hit him in the first pitch, you know,
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
But I think he was trying to stay in the game.
Like I think that was maybe.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Like you have to know that they're going to throw
you out of the game, like like, I don't know.
It's the The immediate Internet reaction I'm like just scrolling
through Reddit right now is basically like Robert Suarez is
now the most hated pitcher in baseball, like because they're like,
you know, it's like throwing it Tom Brady or throwing
(26:25):
it stuff cry, you know what I mean. So there,
it doesn't matter that Tatis got hit. You know, that
hit hit the the ice wasn't even on his wrist
yet when Shoho Tani was was getting hit. Uh but
that's all people see, That's all the headline is going
to be is that, you know, man throws one hundred
mile an hour fastball at Shohyo Tony.
Speaker 8 (26:49):
All right, Eddie, great stuff. Man, Let's do this real quick.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
This was a game.
Speaker 8 (26:54):
This was a game that then had an incident.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
The game to me.
Speaker 8 (27:03):
Was incredibly fucking important. And Rafe I heard you say
that earlier as well, you know, just backing up what
you said from Sunday that you just couldn't get swept.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
This wasn't even a sweet.
Speaker 8 (27:17):
This was going to be a mop. If the Padres
got mopped and we're seven games out, all dreams of
division are dead. We there's a lot of things that
we have to confront getting a win. You still have
to confront a lot of those things going forward. But
(27:37):
for weeks well, yes, not new No it is not.
But I mean, just like, no, it doesn't. What I'm
saying is that we would have had a very bleak show. Okay,
we've been confronting, we've been confirmed. I don't think we've
I don't think there's one person here that has been like, no,
(27:59):
the potteris don't need a left fielder, Nah, butotters are
fine at catching, but starting pitching the way it is like,
no one's saying that.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
I'm push a little back because on our last main
show that the mood was a little upbeat, and you know,
we were going into a four game set against what
many considered to be the best team in the league,
and I was accused of being glum. Okay, I was
bye bye blum. Accusers, I don't quite but I'm not
(28:33):
gonna call out. I don't remember. I didn't listen to
the show, but I just remember the word glum being
about and like it. It felt like we were like, okay,
well we didn't get sweep. Well that's okay, and I
don't want to repeat that again. Like this team has
to urgently shake things up. Like Brandon Lockridge booted a
(28:54):
key ball tonight. I you know, nothing against him personally,
but he also made a base running mistake last night
that cost them a chance to take the lead. In
the top of the knife that you know, there's just
the Martea Maldonado. There's a lot of surplus, non surplus
players with negative value on the team right now, and
(29:15):
they need to make adjustments. They can't wait for the deadline,
they can't wait for the market to settle or any
other imaginary thing. This team needs to get better right away.
And I understand the need.
Speaker 8 (29:29):
For urgency, but making a bad trade is the single
worst thing you can ever do. The bad trades are
the worst. Those are the things that fucking kill you.
And if it's difficult right now to make a good trade,
then it's difficult to make a good trade. Some of
(29:53):
the decisions that aj Preller has made they just come
back to haunt you. And so I don't mind taking
a little bit of a you know, I haven't felt
until tonight like the season in any way, shape or form,
was on the line. Okay, things are eroding. We have
(30:16):
said stated on this show for the record. If things
continue the way they are, the Padres aren't gonna make
the playoffs at the end of the year. So I'll
just say it again, Michael King doesn't come back if
you Darvish doesn't come back. If Datise is hurt now
for long term, if the team scores three point two
runs over long stretches of games, over and over, the
bullpen gets worn out, they will wear down and they
(30:40):
will miss the playoffs. That will happen. I think they're
gonna get better between here and there, and I think
they're going to make the playoffs. I'm not gonna get
away from that. But tonight was a night that they really, really,
really had to win. Yamamoto's on the mound against a
fucking rookie. You've lost the last three games in an
(31:03):
increasingly excruciating fashion each night, you know, like this was
a game you had to win, And I'm thrilled that
they didn't lose this one, because the single thing if
you blow a five nothing lead in the ninth after
Tatiz got hit and your manager went out there and
confronted Dave Roberts, and then they get the win when
(31:23):
they pulled all their players and like Miguel Rowatts and
Dalton Rushing drive in the winning runs, like I mean
serious consideration to just folding everything, you know, I mean
like if that would have been an all time low,
an all time low. So getting this win was was
(31:44):
fucking gigantic. And that's the first m of meaning. The
meaning is we got this win. Series sucks. It's two
and five road trips sucked. It was two and five,
should have been three and four at least should have
been four and three, five and two could have been,
could have should have what it could have been a
contender instead of the bum. I am fucking in the
(32:05):
back of the car right now. But they got this win.
That's the meaning. The man is Xander Bogart's guys. Xander
Bogarts went four for four a homer, which happens now
apparently that's something like the lunar cycle that's gonna happen. Still,
(32:28):
Xander got a homer, Xander got a double. Xander had
his first four hit game of the season. That's five
straight hits going back to his bottom of the night
or top of the ninth, you know hit the night
before that night. I was literally screwed, like yelling, he's
hitting two twenty four. He came into that at bat
(32:49):
in the ninth inning yesterday hitting.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
To twenty four.
Speaker 8 (32:53):
To twenty four, and then.
Speaker 1 (32:57):
Now he's got flubs straight its. Did you see is
the I can't it might have been I can't remember
who put it out, so I won't just go throwing face.
But there was a list of statistics about Xander Bogart's
and clutch situations, you know, running in square position late innings. Yeah,
and all the numbers were even worse than that.
Speaker 8 (33:16):
Oh, horrific, horrific. He had failed like twelve straight times
with runners on base.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
There was just.
Speaker 8 (33:21):
Complete disaster. If Xander Bogarts is going to be that,
the Podres long term outlook is you know, unnecessarily bleak.
So him finding anything is just critical to this season
for the San Diego Padres. So that's part of the
meaning as well. But he's the man, and I want
(33:44):
to submit a moment that's just a game moment that
I think was the difference in the game. And let
me make sure I let me get the box score
up to make sure I don't say the wrong inning,
but it was. It was when Estrada was pitching the
(34:06):
sixth inning, right, no.
Speaker 7 (34:10):
More.
Speaker 8 (34:11):
The seventh inning, Yeah, three nothing Podres seventh inning. Weeble's wobble,
but they don't fall down. Jeremiah Estrada was wobbling. It
was a difficult situation. He had given up five runs
his previous outing at Dodger Stadium. It was a three
(34:32):
to nothing game. The starters were still in the game
and it was ta Oscar single, Muncie grounds out, Taoscar advances,
Poz grounds out two outs, but then Edmund walks than
a wild pitch Haysu and Kim was at the plate,
which means Otani was on deck, and after that wild pitch,
(34:59):
Estrada got Kim on a ground out to shortstop, got
out of the inning, and as a result, the Podreys
were three nothing into the eighth. They get two runs.
Bets has pulled, Smith has pulled, Freeman has pulled. That
winds up being absolutely critical for the game state in
(35:21):
the bottom of the ninth, which I think would have
ended differently if Mookie Betts was still in that game
and uh and the Padres win. So to me, I mean,
obviously we've talked, you guys talk greatly about the ninth.
I'll just underline it. But to me, that was the
moment that probably won the Padres this game.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
We are going to get to you, Jackson Barrels. I wanna.
I want to give my moment which I like my
I like my heroes who don't get captured, and that's
Adrian Morojane who actually faced Otani with guys on base.
Tommy Edmund have walked us and Kim had singled, and
(36:03):
Ryan Bergert had run out of gas and it was
his third time through the lineup, and Adrian more hone
and just just overwhelmed him and fielded his position. So
like I I think like your analysis like it can
as far as the game condition goes Craig with Dave
(36:26):
Roberts doing that feckless move of pulling his starters, like,
I think that's really good and I agree with completely
And I hadn't really, you know, considered that being the lynchpin.
But Adrian coming in, and that dude made a lot
of money this series. He has come in and beat
the top of the Dodgers lineup a lot past a
(36:47):
few games, and I'm up before him, and I was
really happy what he with what he did tonight.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Yeah, I'm just gonna end with this. I gotta get
I have to be up at six thirty in the morning,
so I'm gonna I'm gonna hop off in just a
second and just continue listening as I brush my teeth
and such. But I want to transition a little bit
to we typically talk about the manager. I feel like
we've talked about Mike Show a lot, so I don't,
you know, feel the need to go on more about
(37:13):
the end of the game. But what I do want
to say is truism we've talked about on the show
this week that no manager ever manages the bullpen. Well, uh,
they managed the fucking pitching staff really well tonight. Great
like Ryan Bergert through four and two thirds innings, which
on the surface, with a team that has been taxed,
(37:35):
the bullpen has been taxed, you don't want to get
length of them, and you and the you know, Bergert
only going four and two thirds you're like, oh my god,
you wish you could get a little bit more total
batters face tonight, guys eighteen eighteen. He went exactly two
times through the order and they said, you're out of there.
We're bringing in our guys. And that was one hundred
(37:55):
percent the right move. They pulled all the levers that
needed to be pulled. And by the way, short of
Sean Reynolds not being able to just hit his own tonight,
just again one of those nights where your guy comes in,
he doesn't have it, and that's the gamble you take
by putting in one of your lower leverage guys in
at the end of the game. And so then you
have to burn Suarez and then Matt Suey after Suarez
(38:17):
gets thrown out. But they pulled all the levers, they
pulled them correctly, and Mike Shilt also gets credit for that.
Speaker 8 (38:26):
Well, said Rafe, go ahead and brush them teeth. Appreciate
your commitment to dental hygiene and to getting a few
hours sleep before an early call tomorrow. Yeah, I mean, Chris,
you really said it well at the start of the show,
So I'm not gonna even bother to try and go
back through it.
Speaker 1 (38:45):
I agree that.
Speaker 8 (38:47):
Something had to be done. And look, Mike Schildt stood
up and did it. He came out, He mfed Roberts.
He got right in his face, you know, he put
it to him. And honestly, I just have all the
respect for Shilt, for him standing up for his club
and doing the right thing. And he was completely fired up.
(39:09):
He was righteously fired up. It really bummed me out
that the Potters didn't score in the top of that
ninth inning after he's got hit, and then to see that,
of course the Dodgers score and score and score, you know,
in their half of the innings. It's obnoxious, but they
are obnoxious. But Mike Shilt did an incredible job tonight.
(39:31):
He knew that he couldn't lose this game. And I
couldn't agree with with Rayfie Moore like Bob Melvin would
have let Brian Bergert try and get the win. Yeah,
young kids pitching, well you need to let him get
the win, Like, no, fuck that, we need the win,
not you, you know, And he took out Bergert at
the right time, He got more hone in at the
right time. I thought it was a masterclass tonight all
(39:54):
the way around. Even maximizing Martine Maldonado by using him
to bunt to move up to runners like Maldonado who
gets a ball caught in his.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
And it's just protecting. I almost got mad at, but
that's not his fault. It's not his fault, I know.
Speaker 4 (40:15):
But it's just like, thank God of all the other things.
Speaker 8 (40:18):
He was a pitch in the middle of the zone.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
He couldn't get strikes called.
Speaker 8 (40:22):
It's like, is he really that good? But nonetheless, the
Padres get a huge win out of it tonight. And
you know the mistake was Dave.
Speaker 9 (40:33):
Roberts pulling his stars loser, feckless, loser, pulling your stars
and then giving to tease a parting gift.
Speaker 1 (40:43):
Are you guys the.
Speaker 8 (40:44):
Batties in like a nineties sports movie? What are you like?
I thought, you're the mighty La Dodgers, indomitable and knowing
everything and you know so far ahead. And I have
to hear all of the obnoxious, fucking, you know, nagging
(41:06):
of our team from certain individuals that like to post
a lot, that are always bringing up all the ways
that the Dodgers are just so so so much better.
You know what the Dodgers may have a lot of
structural advantages. They also have a fucking rotten core, all right.
They are a stolless, sucking void of an organization. And
(41:29):
what they did tonight was despicable. It was despicable, just
like what they did to fucking Sig Sour the other
week was pretty despicable, just like how last night. You know,
like they do things their way, you do things your way,
but they they do some stuff that's pretty fucking bush.
And then they think that everyone has to drink their
(41:52):
blue milk like every single day for breakfast, and I
just I disagree, and I think think Mike Shilt really
did a smart and a good thing. Here's Jackson Barrel's
Jackson go ahead and meets yourself. Thank you so much
for being here.
Speaker 10 (42:08):
Hey, what's up guys? I Chris, I got to commend
you for the way you started it all off, man,
It really you brought the right energy for sure. And
it's getting late tonight, but I heard, you know, Rayfie
make a comment about what the national media is going
to say about you know, how this all played out tonight,
And I'm looking at Sports Center. I want to read
(42:29):
this out loud. It says Mike Shilton Dave Roberts confront
one another after Tatist gets hit by a pitch in
the knife. Otani also hit by a pitch later that inning.
Eight combined hit by a pitch is in the series
and last comment in here by Sports Center, Dodgers have
hit Tatist Junior three times in seven games this series,
and I think I think that tells you right there
(42:50):
that the Dodgers' bright blue shine is starting to wear
and everybody's starting to see the evil empire that they
that they are. That the truth is that they've got
a shit fucking manager, They've got a piece of shit team,
and a bunch of people on that team that have
no respect for the game of baseball. And the only
(43:12):
mistake that Bobby bulletsmade tonight was missing Tatusa's head by
a couple of inches, because that would have been the
right fucking move after the way they went after tatus
in this series and the whole season so far. And
the last thing I'm gonna say is, you know, Meryll
not being in this series, I think was a big,
big piece that no one has really talked about. If
(43:36):
we have Meryl playing throughout every single one of these games,
I think that it really changes the dynamics, not only
in the outfield but in the lineup. And there were
games this series that were ready to be won, and
Meryll being there would have change those games. And I
think that that's overlooked right now. And so you know,
taking one game at the end of the series is
(43:56):
a big deal. If we see them in a couple
of weeks or a couple of months or whenever the
next series is with Marylyn the lineup, I think it
changes everything. And so again me being the ultimate optimist,
I think that's that's my mindset going into kind of
the next few weeks. But I just I hope Toddy's
healthy too. I mean, that's gonna be big.
Speaker 8 (44:12):
Yeah, I mean, really that's what it is, right. I mean, Jackson, great,
great call, man. I appreciate you if you're on the
outside looking and the real the story is, well, the
Padres are you know, lost nine to fourteen during an
all NL West run and.
Speaker 1 (44:29):
They may have lost Fernando Tattoos junior.
Speaker 8 (44:32):
Yeah, and who knows not how long on Jackson Merrill
or how quickly he comes back or how well he
comes back. You know this this team is missing key
pieces and it's built to be top heavy. So when
the top pieces are missing, then we are exposed. Then
(44:54):
Lockridge and Brooks and Wade are finishing a game for
you in the outfield. And that was our outfield tonight
was Brooks, Lockridge, and Wade left to right. So things
like this will happen for a top heavy team when
the top parts depart. But I know that about this roster,
(45:19):
so I'm not freaked out about it, you know what
I mean, Like, I know that about this roster. We
missed on Jason Hayward, we missed on Connor Joe. Was
it predictable? Sure, but you could always say that everything
everyone in February last year would have said. You guys,
got Jack Jerkson, profar, he's gonna miss He's gonna hit
two fifteen with three homers. You know, well, no, that's Locker,
(45:40):
that's lock Richard, that's Hayward. This year, Baseball's a stupid game.
But where we are right now, the Padres, like I
come out of this series in these weeks, Chris and
I feel confident in saying the Dodgers are a better
(46:02):
and more complete team than the Podres, top to bottom,
like they have sketchy pitching right now, which is keeping
everything in play. But the platonic versions of these two
teams at full strength, LA is a better team. We
thought that coming into the year and them taking five
out of seven, and the way that it happened with
(46:24):
all close games that San Diego found ways to lose,
all close games that LA found ways to win on margins.
That tells me what I need to know. But it
doesn't mean that it's an irreparable gap even in twenty
twenty five. It just means that the repairs have to
be made. And like we've talked about, it's endless, it's excruciating.
(46:47):
We can yell louder and louder, it's not gonna make
AJ make the move, but it really is a waiting game.
Can he improve this team in a way that doesn't
destroy its future enough? Or are we going to see
this wither as we go I? Or will Michael King
come back and ride in on a white horse with
(47:08):
you Darvish, you know, riding right behind him and rescue
this season for the San Diego Padres. I don't know.
What I know is that Mike Shilt was a fucking
boss tonight and the Padres stood up and they got
out of there with a dub, and that's a really
satisfying finish to an excruciating and long night.
Speaker 1 (47:31):
You know, we've got some dudes that make it really
easy to root for them. And you know, Mike Schilt
will fill in the weis of Rice in the two
spot tomorrow night and it will kind of drive me crazy.
But at the same time, part of that is him
building trust amongst his players, and what he did tonight
(47:54):
might be as big of a moment for him in
that regard as exists. You say the Dodgers are better
than the Padres, I think they're not alone. I think
there are probably three or four National League teams that
can claim to be that. And the Padres need to
do what they can keep up with them. They need
to do what they can to have their guys get
(48:16):
and stay healthy, and they need reinforcements. And I you know,
somebody in the chat posted when I mentioned, you know,
they got to make a move. They got to make
a move now. The Austin Nola trade was born out
of we got to make a move. We got to
make a move now because there's a very winnable World
Series for us right here in the year twenty twenty,
and the Padres traded away a guy who would be
(48:39):
a huge bullpen asset right now, and Andres Munos and
you know, Ty France, who would have been a useful
piece and yeah, and then the same thing with yeah
mostly Munros. Yeah, but I mean, you know, France has
been released and he's bounced around, but he's still a
productive ballplayer. And then they did the same thing in
(49:00):
the Clevenger trade, you know, giving up Josh Naylor, giving
up George Arias and I see all those points. But
as long as it's for the right guy, as long
as they're over the Cassianos line, they're not taking a
shot on Kyle Stowers. They're not taking a shot on
you know, flavor of the week journeyman ballplayer who will
(49:22):
We'll do it. They as long as they are going
after premium talent, they can improve. I feel like the
Padre is gonna be all right. And hello, bug guy,
it's really good to see our resident entomologists guy popping
up on stagey Welcome, Welcome.
Speaker 7 (49:45):
I needed to things down because I was so kissed
I just couldn't even like think straight. I wanted to
just you know, celebrate Xander being a triple away from
a cycle, being happy for him.
Speaker 11 (50:00):
But instead I'm just literally shaking, Like at the end
of the day, there are former Dodgers on the Padres.
There are former Padres on the Dodgers currently. There's guys
like ju Gonzalez, Fernando Valenzuela was a Padre at one point,
Like there's a shared history between these two teams. There's
(50:23):
no reason for them. They're all in a union, They're
in a players union. And Dave Roberts is having his
guys I presume hit are guys. Brownson is playing like
he wants a job in left field, and now I
don't know if we're gonna see him again this season.
Like Dave Roberts is actively hurting not just his own
(50:44):
pitchers and players, but other people's players, and it's not cool,
and I want him gone. I'm just livid about this,
and I don't know what else to say, So I'm
gonna I'm down before I go to bed.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
I appreciate you he should be suspended the shilt thing alone,
But you're right by guys.
Speaker 8 (51:05):
Oh absolutely, But I was remembering Robert de Niro in
The Untouchables right there. I want him debt, I want
his family debt.
Speaker 1 (51:18):
Let's not get too over ourselves. But uh, Dave Roberts
was listen, it's disgusting.
Speaker 8 (51:27):
It's fucking disgusting. The two games that the Padres won
in this seven game set. And that's sad to set.
But those two games, each time I came away disgusted
at the Dodgers organization, not happy for the Padres win.
Each time I came away going, I have lost more
respect for la like more and more and more. And
(51:50):
tonight was really one five nothing. The message that you're
sending Dave Roberts, who has proven that he believes his
psychological game is strong.
Speaker 1 (52:04):
Yeah, why he's.
Speaker 8 (52:07):
Right, the sinister sling right. And he knows that if
he needs to spin this, as he's going through the
whole thing in the back of his mind, he knows
if he needs to spin this, Ken Rosenthal is a
text away to write two thousand words in his defense
tomorrow morning, to have it in the athletic for the
(52:28):
column for the newsletter tomorrow morning. He knows he's got
his ability to do that. What he's saying to the
Podres in a five nothing game, pulling his stars for
an innings rest. He's saying to them, we know this
doesn't matter to us. We don't care. We can lose
(52:53):
this game. We're still going to beat you in the playoffs.
We know we're better than you. We know when it matters,
will win. We know when it matters, you won't have
it and we will. So we can just do this.
We can do this five nothing. We can just we can.
We can pull our two, three, four right out of
the game like it's twelve nothing. We can do it
at five nothing because we don't we don't care. We're
(53:13):
gonna tell you how bad you are by by pulling
our players. That's the message he's trying to send, is
you guys suck so hard. We'll just cancel this one.
We don't care. Take a win, take a fucking win.
We don't care.
Speaker 5 (53:28):
That's Oh.
Speaker 8 (53:29):
But by the way, oh you're gonna leave to teasin. Hey,
we pulled our guys. You should have pulled your guys.
Oh you're gonna put the teasin. Think here it comes
the parting gift. Please enjoy this parting gift.
Speaker 1 (53:43):
Think the two wins, the two wins they've managed you
get against the Dodgers. This year in seven games, Dodgers
had a you know, clown show of Key k Hernandez
pitching after they you know, push one guy to the
modern limit of pitching, of pitch counts, and then they
(54:04):
pull their starter, Like pulling your starters for two innings
in a five to zhing game is just so arrogant,
so cocky, and such shitty sportsmanship that, you know, I
tend to give the Dodgers a lot of credit organizationally, Craig.
They're one of the first teams to feed and take
(54:27):
in house minor league players. They do some things that
I think should be the standard of the industry. You know,
I don't think the Dodgers are a bigger threat to
competitive balance in the major leagues than the Pirates are,
or that some of these teams that just leach off
(54:48):
of fan bases, leach off communities, you know, just on
the name alone and then pocket revenue sharing money. I
think the Dodgers rank somewhere below that. But they mocked
their fan base a fair amount this week. I don't
want to get political on our show, you know, it's
not a part of it. So I'll just point to
(55:12):
them having one of their media relations people talked to
a Dominican singer. I can't remember that. I think her
name is Nezi. She's famous in places that I don't
go to, you know, the tiktoks and the snapchats and whatnot.
And they had a PR person come out to her
moments before she sang the national anthem and say, yeah,
(55:33):
it's going to be in English today. I don't know
if anybody told you that, but that's what it's going
to be. And this woman released a video of this
media media person telling her that to her face and
you can just see her get crestfallen. And then this
badass chick went out and sang it in Spanish anyway,
which is an official version, as she explained in her TikTok,
(55:54):
so you can look it up. Just google Dodger's Spanish
national anthem. You will see it.
Speaker 6 (55:59):
All.
Speaker 1 (56:00):
This was a national anthem commission, but FDR in nineteen
forty five is an official American anthem. And the Dodger said, no,
you don't get to sing that here in front of
our fan base, which has to be seventy percent Latino.
It's a slap in the face. And they also prey
(56:22):
on the good nature of their community and the absolutely instinctual,
basic roots that sports fandom does on it, and that
was a bit of a slap in the face I
felt to that part. I'm not part of it, so
I don't really get to speak on it, but it
left me a really bad taste in my mouth. And
then they had the audacity to call that woman's manager
(56:44):
and tell her manager that she need not submit her
clients to the Dodgers ever again. So you know, FTD
yet again. But it's been a bad week for them, PRR.
And then to have Dave Roberts pulling bush league shit
like they had that non baseball fans won't understand. They
won't understand the arrogance and how insulting it is to
(57:05):
pull mookie bats in a game like tonight. They won't
understand the arrogance of having keyk come out and throw
ephis pitches for two innings and have another guy throw
one hundred and twenty. But we see it, and it's
bad sportsmanship. And if the MLB is already holding up
Otani as their golden boy on their social media saying,
(57:26):
oh look at how good O'tani was at calming things
down and keeping his guys on his bens. Yeah, because
Sotani's not a piece of shit, and Dave Roberts was tonight.
Speaker 5 (57:37):
He was.
Speaker 8 (57:39):
I want to be clear because I do agree with
the negative things you said about the Dodgers and the
way they've handled a lot of situations that I do
not believe the Padres are as an organization head and
shoulders more sensitive. I don't know that they would have
handled that particular situation with that particular singer any differently
(58:03):
than LA did. And I think that there's a lot
of issues there that could be confronted just as well.
Corporations are fascist period, okay by design, So dumb shit
like this has become normalized in our country over the
last over the course of my lifetime, it's become normalized.
(58:25):
It used to be that the behavior like that from
LA would be big news and reprehensible to tell the
agent of the singer, We're not going to use your
clients anymore because of it. Now it's like it's a
thing that we can talk about on social media. The
Dodgers will just cruise right on by, completely unaffected. But yeah,
(58:50):
this was a really emotional game, and it is a
really upsetting game. And like I am fully aware of
the eroding status of the San Diego Padres twenty twenty five.
But there's no point to gnashing our teeth, screaming, wailing,
getting on this or that they're gonna make it or
(59:11):
they're not. Tonight, I'm really proud to be a Padres fan,
and I don't know what the season's gonna wind up being.
And there's gonna be some folks that are gonna just
