Speaker 1 (00:00):
There. I've been a lot of rumors that darsh is
trying to cook something up to trade up in the
draft and potentially get the Long Island Kid. James Hagens
giving us the Matthew Schaeffer James Hagen's combo that most
of this fan base has been dying for aka Shagans.
Well rest in peace to the Shagans propaganda that's been
(00:21):
hitting Long Island like a hurricane the past month or so.
The dream is dead. James Hagen's taken seventh overall in
the draft by the Boston Bruins. The Isles did not
trade up in Friday night's NHL Draft, after picking Matthew
Schaeffer first overall in a move that surprised literally nobody.
(00:42):
Matthew Schaeffer, of course, the consensus number one overall pick
was projected to be picked by the Isles the second
that they landed thirteen in the ping pong machine and
won the draft lottery. And now he potentially gets to
be their version of cal mccarr for at least the
next half decade plus, if not long longer. He's going
to be somebody to build around on that blue line,
(01:03):
and especially seeing his character leading up into the draft.
It just reaffirms how I feel how all of Isle's
nation feels about Matthew Shaeffer losing his mother to cancer
a year ago. It's never easy for any kid to
deal with, never mind one who's about to have massive
expectations on him in the NHL, and it's something that
hits home for Matthew Shaffer especially, But he just seems
(01:27):
very humble off the ice as well, instead of going
to one of his graduations, instead taking the time to
speak to other kids who face similar hardships losing a
parent to cancer, which is just something that no kid
ever wants to go through. Him missing such an important
milestone in his life. To go speak to other kids
(01:48):
really reaffirmed to me why the Isles need to have
him at number one overall. But then also the nice
touches that the Islanders as an organization made when they
picked Schaeffer first overall, putting the purple can to ribbon
on his first ever Islander jersey, also stitching the initials
of Matthew Shaffer's mother inside of his jersey JS for
(02:10):
the late Jennifer Schaeffer. Just a nice touch all around,
and it proves why the Islanders even without lou Lamarello
in the fold. Now, they still prove that they are
a first class organization, contrary to what a lot of
prolu and anti Darsh people in the Isles community will
say that they're no longer a first class organization. That
(02:30):
could not be farther from the truth. And it shows
what I feel like very early on is the perfect
pairing of team and draft pick. Now, yes, you absolutely
could have had that with Hagens as well, but I
will give Isles fans credit for not instantly wanting to
fire Darsh the moment that he was drafted by the Bruins.
In fact, the Isles fans at the draft in Los
(02:52):
Angeles wishing Hagens the best of luck, giving him a
lot of applause once he got drafted. He'll be making
a lot of visits to Ubs in the New York future,
I'm sure. But also he gets to stay pretty close
to Long Island and especially very close to Boston College
where he was playing college hockey. So not the end
of the world there. Plus the Isles keeping picks sixteen
(03:14):
and seventeen in the draft that they got from Montreal
and the Noah Dobson trade the day of seems to
be aging way better than it would have been had
they traded up given up a bunch of assets to
get the Long Island kid James Hagen's in the top seven.
So what did they do with those picks that they
got from Montreal? Well, at pick sixteen, they took a
Swedish left winger, Victor Ecklund, who was projected to go
(03:37):
in the top ten. I was genuinely very surprised that
he fell to the Aisles at sixteen. The fact that
they were able to pick him up and strengthen their
rapidly improving farm system. That's a hell of a pick
right there. And with seventeen drafting another Blue Liner kasehawn
Aitchison only an inch taller from James Hagens, but he's
(03:59):
a very hard hitting defender can score a solid amount.
That one also sounds like a huge steal to me,
especially it's seventeen. I still am admittedly in shock that
the Isles were able to make those picks and see
those guys just fall to where they ended up picking.
And props to Matthew darsh first draft as Islanders GM
for making those picks. It's gonna be very fun to
(04:22):
see them in development camp, which, by the way, the
team for the first time and what feels like forever,
is actually advertising on their social media pages. Just the
other day on Instagram they're publishing videos of darsh actually
talking to the prospects. This is something you would never
get under lul La Morello. Come on, this is something
(04:42):
that you would never get. And as a fan, I
just love seeing all the new behind the scenes stuff
that you would never see under the previous regime. Like
it's been seven years since we got any of this
on Isle social media and it's kind of crazy, but
that's the truth. Namely one instance under Lula Morello where
(05:05):
you saw this happen in real time And if you're
still thinking, that's probably because you cannot name one instance
of that, so development can't. Beginning today at the Northwell
Ice Center and a PSA by the way, Tanny Eiles
fans that are listening that may not already be aware
of this, they are having a Blue and Orange scrimmage
(05:28):
at the Northwell Ice Center Wednesday night, seven o'clock, doors
open at five point fifteen. I will be there. It'll
be my first look at those new isles. Prospects in
addition to a lot of returning favorites as well, among
them Cole Isserman, Quinn Finley, Alex Jeffries, Callum Richie, Danny Nelson,
Matt Maggio, my Guys, Isaiah George and call O Dlias,
(05:51):
Tristan Lennox among others, including their first round picks from
this season in Matthew Schaeffer, Kashawn Ahison and Victor Eckland.
So it'll be pretty fun to see. In addition, they're
also holding public practices tomorrow and Thursday mornings nine am
at Northwell Ice Center. Those are free to attend. You
just have to RSVP on the Isles website. So hey,
(06:12):
you want to take a look at the future, you
got it right there. Now. I'm not affiliated in any
way with the Islanders at this current moment, but hey,
I'd be very down to be affiliated with the Islanders
once again, just like in my days at Wich, something
I'm always open to. But that's another can of worms
and I'm getting a little sidetracked with that. This isn't
an advertisement either. I'm not sponsored by them or anything
(06:35):
like that. I'm not getting compensation for sharing this, but
it's good for me as a fan to keep other
fans in the no. So that's exactly why I'm telling
you this. If you want your chance to go see
the future, now take advantage of it. It's not like
you have a lot of other opportunities to do so.
It's been seven years since this stuff. Now that we
(06:57):
have this back, take advantage. That's Pag's perspective for you.
So yeah, there's a lot to look forward to in
the next few days as free agency is set to
start up soon. But we got more Isles news apart
from the Rookie Talk today, one of them being rumors
confirmed by Frank Saravelli that the Isles may be moving
(07:17):
their AHL affiliate in Bridgeport to Hamilton, Ontario, which I
don't exactly understand from a logistical standpoint, but also from
the perspective of the Bridgeport fans. Yes, if the Bridgeport
Sound Tigers were to move to Hamilton, they would get
a new building. At least they completely overhauled TD Coliseum,
(07:40):
which I believe used to be the Cops Coliseum from
back in the day, same building where the Pens were
rumored to move to when they had those Hamilton and
Kansas City talks. In the two thousands before the Cops.
They're arena up there just got a three hundred million
dollar renovation, so they would be playing in a new building.
But then again, isn't the point of your AHL affiliates
to keep the minor league teams kind of close to home?
(08:03):
And wouldn't that be doing the exact opposite by moving
them to Hamilton as opposed to just having an affiliate
right across the Long Island Sound, a ferry ride away
from Port Jefferson, Long Island. Wouldn't that kind of be
going against that? And I know there have been rumors
for years a lot of people wanting them to go
to the coliseum, which you know would be cool, don't
(08:25):
get me wrong, but I'm not really for that, mostly
because I feel that would just be oversaturating the hockey
market over there. Like you got ubs to the West
Northwell Ice Center right next to the coliseum. Still, plus
would the colleague wanna host hockey again? I really don't know.
But also you got Albany rumors. These rumors haven't been
(08:47):
anything new, but you got to keep in mind as well,
the Rangers have their AHEL affiliate in Hartford as well.
If you're trying to cater to Connecticut fans. Wouldn't you
want to maintain a presence over there, especially when your
rivals are sharing a different part of the same state.
Wouldn't it make more sense to stay in Bridgeport? Also,
the Baby Isles were terrible this past season, There's no
(09:07):
question about it. But even then, the attendance figures have
somehow stayed pretty strong even with that. So it is
a little surprising that they would do this now, and
just years after they rebranded from the Sound Tigers to
the Bridgeport Islanders. None of this just makes sense to
be it. If anything, why wouldn't you want to maintain
a presence in Connecticut where there's a bunch of Aisles
(09:29):
fans there. Why wouldn't you want to maintain a presence
there now? I hope these rumors are false and that
maybe some other team can occupy the Hamilton market, but
it remains to be seen. All I know is that
if you move them to Hamilton, it just wouldn't be
a perfect place for them. But I'm really in favor
of keeping the Baby Aisles in Bridgeports. So Isles management,
(09:51):
let's make it happen, Let's keep it going up there.
They've thrived for twenty five years, so it doesn't make
much sense why they can't for another twenty five years.
Let's keep that going. But luckily, today's Isles news isn't
all bad, as they came to terms with restrictive free
agent Alex Romanov on an eight year deal six point
twenty five AAV. And yeah, you know, I have questions
(10:15):
about the contract, but I like it. You're keeping him
around for the long term. Compared to what Dobson wanted
from this team, this seems like a bargain. Romanov currently
twenty five, so he's still yet to hit his prime,
and we know what he can already do on the ice,
being one of the isles more physical players the past
few seasons, somebody who's been very spirited, even in the
(10:37):
dark times. That was just last season where a common
complaint among the fan base was that these players just
didn't care that they be on the business end of
all these physical hits, but yet they don't even have
enough physicality to retaliate. Romanov has been a breath of
fresh air in that regard. Somebody who plays a very
physical game, and that's somebody I want to keep around
(10:57):
if I want to remake this blue line that's now
gonna have Matthew Schaefer on it. So I do like
the contract. Yes, that said, I have questions about it.
I'm sure a lot of other fans will. I'm sure
a common complaint will be that it's a little bit
too steep for the game that Romi provides, and that's fair.
But for now, I do like the term. You just
have to hope that for the term of the contract
(11:20):
he can a step up offensively, but also more importantly,
that because he plays a physical game by the time
his contract is over in twenty thirty three, that his
game just won't fall off of a cliff entirely by
that point, because normally Father Time is not very kind
to those that play physical games, and usually when a
player starts to decline, the physical attributes are usually the
(11:43):
first to go. So I'm expecting a bit more out
of Vermanov this upcoming season. But do I think he
will be able to deliver on that end. Absolutely So
glad they're keeping him around, especially with him being in
all those trade rumors over the past month or so.
I'm happy that he gets to stick around on Long
Island as this team continues to gear for the future
in their continuous overhaul of their farm and their youth.
(12:07):
Alex is somebody that could be part of the current
cored now and also the future once they're going to
be ready to contend in the East, which hey, if
these first rounders and these other prospects continue to develop,
who knows, that could be sooner than later. You never know,
but time is going to be the biggest factor here,
and so Darsha's first big obstacle as iles GM out
(12:27):
of the way, as free agency set to start. Before this,
Sile's having about little less than twenty one million dollars
in cap, so that's going to go down to about
a little over fourteen and a half million after the
Ramanov extension. Also after the one year extensions given out
to the likes of Julian Gautier and Liam Faudi to
one year, seven hundred and seventy five k deals, so
(12:50):
they'll be back for more depth and also for more
playing time in Bridgeport, I'm sure. As for the rest
of that cap though, remains to be seen what they're
gonna do with it. Yes, their names have been in
the Marner conversation since May, but that's looking more unlikely
with the way they're going about the offseason prioritizing the
youth a little bit more. Plus, they still got to
(13:10):
pay the likes of Simon Holmstrom and Max Ziplikov. Also
Emil Heinemann, the new winger that they acquired in the
Dobson trade, also said to be a restricted free agent
after playing his first full NHL season with the Habs
just last season, so they got to retain some of
their own guys. Still, it's possible we could be getting
some more news about this today, but remains to be
seen as the Ales making moves as they open development
(13:34):
camp for their rookies today.
