A Monday hockey edition of Pags' Perspective, a day after the incredible Game 7 finish between the St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets, which really reminded me of Islanders playoff games at the Nassau Coliseum. Speaking of the Islanders, they hope to win the 1st pick at tonight's NHL Draft Lottery in New Jersey with 3.5% odds, as well as some more Islanders news behind the scenes.

Speaker 1 (00:04):
Welcome to Pag's Perspective with your host Ryan Pagano. It
count of three Elers start whatever choo checonds of black

(00:27):
off the boards for Chao, he shut the chests. What
what a pet chicks. We'll move on to face the
Dallas Stars, a Jets team that's actually exciting to watch.
I can't even believe it. I thought that was illegal

(00:48):
here in New York, but yet here we are. How
about those Winnipeg Jets with the game seven win when
they basically looked dead to rights. I mean, this will
first go down as one of the best game sevens
that I have ever seen in my time watching hockey.
Latest game seven time goal in NHL history, under two

(01:10):
seconds to go in regulation, they send it. Not just
to ot, double ot where we get out of Lowry's
game winner, the longest game seven since the Easter Epic
back in nineteen eighty seven, when Pat la Fontaine sent
the Islanders to the Patrick Division Finals, beating the Caps
in the early hours of Easter morning nineteen eighty seven.

(01:32):
Just wild times and it's crazy to think the Saint
Louis Blues, the second wild card in the Western Conference,
were two seconds away from moving on to a date
with the Dallastars. Just think about that for a second.
They were really so close to snatching victory away from
the almost President's Trophy winners, and yet Saint Louis sold

(01:54):
hard as they are singing the Blues big time today.
I mean, at least have that Cardinals doubleheader sweep over
the Mets to cling onto as their hockey team sinks
into the abyss for the time being. But you know what,
the Blues will be back. They're more or less gonna
be running it back in twenty five twenty six with
the same core, Not that they can really do that
much to add on to it. They only have about

(02:16):
seven million dollars in cap space going into the summer,
the lowest out of any team in the NHL right now.
Plus if Tory Kruge is gonna come back healthy, that's
a hell of a lot of defensemen that the Blues
have locked up to contracts in twenty five twenty six.
I was looking at their cap situation earlier on spo track.
So they have six of them making over four million
dollars a year. One of them is krug assuming he

(02:38):
comes back healthy. That's just gonna create a big log
jam for them that I really don't know if they
want to deal with. On top of that, all but
one of those six defensemen that I alluded to has
some form of trade protection, So yeah, Saint Louis, I
wish you the best of luck. One of them is
Nick Letty. By the way. It's sad that they could
have win this series for him because he's really the

(02:59):
one player on the Blue I was admittedly rooting for,
of course, since he's a former New York Islander, and
speaking of the Islanders, I figured it'd be kind of
fitting to talk about that incredible Game seven between the
Blues and the Jets because the atmosphere in the Catada
Life Center yesterday for Game seven really brought me back
to the days of the Nassau Coliseum and it was

(03:20):
definitely one of those nights where I really missed going
to hockey games at the Nassau Coliseum all the more
just with the fan atmosphere, the white out, although that's
a Winnipeg thing, and also a little bit of the
beer cans being tossed on the ice, which the media
apparently did not make a big deal like they did
with the Nasau Coliseum. After Game six of the Stanley

(03:41):
Cup semifinals, you know the one where already Olchik just
went crazy on live television after Isles fans were tossing
their beer cans on the ice following Pavilier's overtime winner.
We certainly remember this stuff back on Long Island, folks,
We definitely remember this stuff. We don't forget anytime soon.
And knowing this Isles offseason, they'll to find a way
to bring back Bavilier pairing with his friend Matt Barzel

(04:03):
once again in a time of big changes for the Islanders.
Really letting go of lou Lamorello also letting go of
two of my former colleagues that I've worked with on
Islander broadcasts for parts of three seasons. Chris k and
Greg Picker let go from the team after over a
decade plus together in the radio booth. So definitely a

(04:26):
very sad start to the offseason. I wish them really
well in their future endeavors. I've had nothing but nice
things to say about them back and by time at WRHU,
and I mean they're Islanders' lifers. Kingers been with the
team since nineteen ninety eight, Pickers since I believe twenty thirteen.
But to go from a dedicated radio team to now
going back to a TV simulcast, it doesn't bowe well

(04:48):
with me at all. I still vividly remember the last
time that they tried this in twenty nine to ten,
they simulcasted the MSG plus feed on what is now
ninety four to three The Shark. I remember as vividly
that it only lasted one season, and that was, of
course before the initial trial run that the Isles made
with writ and what would ultimately be the beginning of

(05:08):
a fifteen year relationship between the Isles and Hofstra. Howie Rose,
who for about twenty years was the Islanders TV play
by play guy, he just sounded off on this on
Twitter when this was reported by Arthur Staple of The
Athletic and what I think is pretty funny for him
to do. That season he purposely didn't bring up the
score when going to commercial breaks in protest of not

(05:31):
having a dedicated radio team calling these games, because you
could really say what you want in the end of
the day about oh the Isles being on a college
radio station. Okay, yeah, on the surface that might not
necessarily be it. But as somebody who has graduated through
that pipeline. You just got to dig a little bit
deeper into it, because yes, WRQ is a student run station,

(05:53):
but the leadership is far and away one of the
best that I have ever seen from a college radio
station ever. And a lot of other people who went
to WI, a lot of other people that have worked
on those Islanders broadcasts the past fifteen years, they will
tell you exactly the same thing. And you know what
made that as good as it was, by having two

(06:14):
guys who just genuinely love to talk hockey talk Isles.
They epitomized what this franchise means to so many people perfectly.
And I genuinely hope that the Isles reconsidered this decision,
But we'll see what happens there, because there are a
lot more pressing issues for the Islanders to deal with
right now, finding a GM among them, deciding the future

(06:35):
of head coach Patrick wah Another, but also tonight, the
NHL Draft lottery. Islanders going into this tonight with a
three point five percent chance, in other words, thirty five
different four number combinations to win either the number one
or number two overall picks. A lot of fans hoping
that whoever this next Isles GM will be can somehow

(06:56):
get his or her hands on a Long Island product
in James Hagen's, which will certainly help out with the
dwindling ticket sales that have really become a problem for
the Islanders franchise since Ubs Arena opened four years ago.
Doesn't help either that one of their main sales pitches
to prospective season ticket holders being that the twenty twenty
six NHL All Star Game was going to be held

(07:16):
on the island and now it's no longer being held
on the island in favor of a kickoff event to
the twenty twenty six Olympics. Now, I'm sure they're going
to reassign the All Star Game in Elmont to another year.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has been very on the record
really looking forward to putting an All Star Game at
UBS Arena, especially with the Belmont Park village that opened

(07:37):
up this past hockey season. But at least props to
them for still having an event in Elmont after the cancelation,
just to have something take place. There's a bit of
a sendoff for those that will be participating in the
Winter Olympics. I'm personally okay with it. I know a
couple other people that do not feel the same way
at all, one of them being New York Governor Kathy

(07:59):
Hokel As she sent a letter to Commissioner Betman expressing
her disappointment in the NHL's decision to cancel All Star
Weekend at Ubs Arena in favor of said kickoff event
that I was telling you about earlier, and in this
letter she urged the league to commit to bring a
major NHL event of equal or greater value to Long Island.

(08:20):
She goes on to express her disappointment about their decision
and more so, making it without consulting the State of
New York beforehand, who played a really big part in
supporting the building's construction as well as the NHL's presence
on Long Island and throughout the state, of course, with
the Buffalo Sabers and the New York Rangers going on

(08:40):
to hold the one hundred million plus that the state
committed to build the Elmont Ubis Arena Long Island Railroad station,
the first in fifty years for the Long Island Railroad,
over the NHL's heads and requesting that the NHL revisits
this matter immediately and that they did some breaking news
here on PEG's perspective, this is telling ESPN just a

(09:01):
little while ago that the NHL, while it was reported
earlier that they were planning a kickoff event to the
Olympics at Ubs Arena next February in lieu of All
Star Weekend, sources confirmed they will be planning an international event. Now,
the NHL hasn't announced their plans for the weekend before
the twenty twenty six Winter Olympics, but a league source,
telling ESPN's Emily Kaplan quote, it's going to be a

(09:24):
spectacular international event. So whether or not it's going to
be the four Nations face off returning in twenty six,
or if it's going to be another tourney similar to that,
we'll get more information about it soon. But it is
pretty noteworthy that Governor Kathley Hokele really making these things work.
The same day she sends a letter to Gary Bettman,

(09:44):
already we have major news on the future of twenty
twenty six NHL All Star Weekend. So how about all
this Isles news as they enter a new era which
could perhaps be really kickstarted tonight with a good draft pick.
Will the Islanders three zo point five percent odds result
in something greater than the tenth pick. We'll find out

(10:04):
tonight's seven pm Eastern Time NHL Draft Lottery. I'll be
watching and let the anticipation begin
