(00:48):

in every issue. I'm Darren Marlerand this is Paranormality Magazine. Stationed at

(01:10):
raf Binbrook in Lincolnshire, England.Captain Bill Shafter was well liked among his
peers. He was appointed to theranks of fifth Squadron. When he moved
to England, he brought his family, wife Linda, children David Glennon and
baby Michael. The squadron was assignedto patrol the air over the North Sea
for the ever present danger of theUSSR During the Cold War, if alerted

(01:32):
to an object seen coming close totheir territorial waters, they would need to
shadow them, warn them off,or shoot them down if necessary. On
that day, they were assigned trainingfor the entire day. Lightnings zoomed off
to look for this imaginary threat, returning to refuel and take off again.
Shafter wasn't scrambled until the evening.By then the weather had started to worsen.

(01:56):
He climbed to ten thousand feet overthe North Sea as he searched for
the dangerous radar alert. He checkedback in with the RAF radar station three
minutes and five seconds later to betold he was to shadow another plane to
pretend it was a Russian threat. He was told to shadow and shepherd the
enemy plane, which he had practicedbut had not been cleared to perform yet.

(02:19):
Darkness was approaching, and at thatpoint he had only eighteen hours of
night flying experience. In a lightning, the speed of the quote unquote enemy
Shackleton placed was one hundred and eightyfive miles per hour, and the slowest
that his lightning could go in thatoperation would have been two hundred and thirty
miles per hour. This most likelywould have tested his flight skills. Flying
at night makes it very difficult tosee the horizon, which meant that the

(02:42):
water and the sky would blend together. His task was suddenly changed to intercept
the shackleton and escort it back toRAF Binbrook. Shafter dropped to five thousand
feet and was told to increase hisspeed to mock point ninety five or seven
hundred twenty eight miles per hour towardthe na ME, flying about twenty eight
nautico miles away at nine p fortytwo. Just twelve minutes after he had

(03:06):
blasted off from RAF Binbrook, hegot another set of instructions. If target
aircraft approaches within three miles of theUK coastline, it is to be directed
to land at Waddington, another RAFbase in Lincolnshire. He never responded.
The flight controller began to panic asthey could no longer see Shafter on the
radar. Radio calls were blasted out, but he still did not respond.

(03:30):
RAF pilot Chris Covill flew toward Shafter'slast known location to look for his missing
friend, but he could not findhim or his craft. Something terrible had
happened to Bill. It was obviousthat he had crashed into the sea,
but there was still hope, hesaid. The RAF sent a lifeboat and
an RAF Marine Branch rescue vessel tosearch for the missing Shafner. Coville said,

(03:53):
if he had ejected and triggered hissurvival beacon, it would transmit a
signal to allow rescuers to hum inon him, but the rescue crew detected
no beeps. The RAF had theunfortunate task of delivering the terrible news to
Bill Shafter's wife, Linda. Sherecalls an RAF doctor arriving with a box
of valume to calm her. Iwas in total shock, she said.

(04:15):
I was told Bill was probably dead, but what did probably mean? How
could they know? I stayed upmost of the night, hoping, praying
that they would find him. Everytime I heard a noise outside, I
rushed to the window to see ifit was him. No sign of Bill
or his craft could be found untilone month later. A mine sweeper was

(04:39):
scanning the North Sea with a largeobject pinged off their radar five miles northeast
of Flamborough Head, lying in mudon the seabed about a hundred feet from
the surface. They sent down adiver who came back and identified it as
Shaft Nurse missing craft, but thediver relaid something strange. Cockpit closed.
Looking in now it's empty, nosign of the pilot. Once it was

(05:03):
hauled to the surface, it wasconfirmed that the top canopy was closed,
but the cockpit was vacant, Theejection seat was still inside. The altimeter
was frozen, with the craft's speedupon impact one hundred eighty miles per hour.
The mystery lived on until nineteen ninetynine, when their youngest son,

(05:24):
Mike, aged twenty nine, decidedto start seeking answers. He could only
locate an official report stating his father'smissing date and time. One day,
he was browsing online and stumbled uponan article regarding his father. Quote.
About ten pages into my search,I saw the words eight September nineteen seventy
and rif Binbrook. It was thedate my dad died and his base.

(05:47):
I was astonished. Once he openedthe link, up popped a nineteen ninety
two article in the Grimsby Telegraph entitledthe Riddle of Fox Trot ninety four.
The article stated a young USAF pilot, Captain Bill Shafter, had been scrambled
in his lightning along with the sixRAF fighters from other bases, three tankers,

(06:09):
and a Shackleton early warning aircraft tointercept a mystery contact. This was
referring to an unidentified flying object aUFO. Even more articles were gathered by
independent UFO hunters. One article evencontained what it claimed was an official transcript
of Bill's final radio calls with hisflight controllers. I have visual contact,

(06:30):
repeat visual contact. I'm alongside itnow, maybe six hundred feet. It's
a conical shape. Geez, that'sbright. It hurts my eyes to look
at it for more than a fewseconds. The article then claimed shafter now
saw an object the size of alarge football, like it's made of glass,
bobbing up and down at the backend of the mystery craft. It's

(06:51):
not connected. Maybe a magnetic attractioncould be the power source. It's within
a haze of yellow light. There'sno sign of ballistics, he said.
Suddenly, he radioed in, panickingit's turning, coming straight for me and
taking evasive action. His radio thenwent silent. Mike and his brothers tried

(07:11):
to contact people within the US AirForce who could answer their questions. The
reply was immediate and direct. Thisis utter hokum. It's just a bunch
of made up junk, they said. After the shock wore off, Mike
agreed clearly it was utter rubbish,But the fact that there was so much
information out there about my dad spurredme on to investigate more. He and

(07:33):
his brother were also angered by thestories of doing their distinguished and decorated father
a gross disservice. My dad wasa pilot. I was horrified his name
was linked to this UFO nonsense. But one rather large mystery still remained.
None of us could understand why theejection seat was still in his jet,
but my father was not. Itbecame my mission to establish what had happened

(07:57):
to him that night. Years passed, when one day the BBC reached out
to them. They stated they werelooking into Bill Schafner's death and trying to
pressure the British Ministry of Defense torelease information from the accident report. The
Ministry of Defense claimed they did nothave the information that it was most likely
destroyed, but they eventually found it. It had the actual transcript of their

(08:20):
father's last radio messages. This transcriptmade the UFO transcript a peer false.
It claimed Bill's death was entirely anaccident. The mystery remained about why he
had not ejected. Crashing into thesea at one hundred and eighty miles per
hour would probably have resulted in severeinjuries. Chris Coville says he had tried

(08:41):
to eject at some point and failed, but he had then clearly unstrapped from
his ejection seat, managed to openthe cockpit canopy and struggle out as the
jet initially floated on the water. So why was the jet later discovered with
the canopy sealed shut? Didn't thatpoint to some outside interference, whether a
alien or a Cold War enemy. Now, after Shafner had escaped from his

(09:05):
cockpit, the aircraft began to sinkdeep into the sea, and the increasing
water pressure forced the canopy shut againas it continued to descend. According to
Covil, there was only one answerto his friend's disappearance. Incapacitated and without
his survival, dinghy Bill almost certainlydrowned in the cold North Sea. It
was sheer bad luck that several elementscombined on that fateful night to take him

(09:31):
to his death. I'm no flightexpert, nor do I have any flight
experience. For those of you outthere with more insight, what do you
think of this? Is it justone big coincidence wrapped in a tragedy or
do you think something else happened toBill Shafner In the realm of UFOs unidentified

(09:58):
flying objects. The world has grownaccustomed to stories of strange phenomena in the
skies. Yet there is another mysteriousdimension that remains relatively unexplored, the enigma
of Unidentified Submerged Objects USOS. Whilethe sightings of unknown entities and the heavens
are well documented, the intrigue surroundingobjects emerging from and disappearing beneath the ocean's

(10:24):
surface has gained traction in recent years. Notably, leaked to US Navy footage
has captured instances of objects observed descendinginto the deep blue. Could the ocean's
depths be a clandestine refuge for otherworldly visitors? According to Brian Helmuth,
a distinguished professor of Marine and Environmentalscience, the ocean presents an ideal vantage

(10:46):
point for extraterrestrial observers keen on studyingour civilization. Helmuth remarked, if I
were an investigator exploring an alien planetakin to Earth, the ocean would unquestionably
be my starting point. He emphasizedthat the ocean encompasses the vast majority of
Earth's living space and organisms, allwhile being relatively untouched by the one species

(11:09):
notorious for harming the planet humans.Helmuth stated it would be a prime location
for observation. This perspective could explainwhy NASSA sought the expertise of oceanographer Paula
Bontempe to contribute to the panel presentingthe Space Agency's recent UFO report. Helmuth
expressed confidence in Bontempe, describing heras highly respected within their field and as

(11:33):
an ideal candidate for the committee.Nonetheless, the sheer immensity of the ocean's
depths poses a formidable challenge. Searchingfor evidence of extraterrestrial presence beneath the waves
is akin to seeking a needle anda colossal haystack. In a strange turn

(11:58):
of events in Salteam, Mexico,an attempted rescue mission that was initiated after
cries for help were heard from awell took a baffling twist when authorities reached
the bottom and discovered that no onewas there. This eerie incident left both
witnesses and police bewildered. The perplexingsaga commenced when a passerby strolling through a

(12:20):
residential neighborhood her desperate pleas for assistanceemanating from an open drainage well that plunged
approximately twenty feet deep. Promptly alertedto the situation, local law enforcements swiftly
converged on the scene, their missionclear rescue the woman in distress. However,
what unfolded next would confound them allgathering around the well. Police officers

(12:43):
shouted down, trying to establish contactwith the woman and ascertain her identity.
In response, a faint voice fromthe depths of the well replied with a
name Juanita, seemingly validating the initialreport from the concerned resident. However,
despite the use of powerful flashlights toscour the well's depths, no visual confirmation

(13:05):
of the woman's presence could be made. The situation took an even more mystifying
turn when the fire department arrived, armed with specialized equipment designed for rescues in
confined spaces. One daring rescuer descendedinto the well, fully prepared to save
Juanita. To the astonishment of everyonepresent, the well was entirely devoid of

(13:26):
any sign of her. It wasas if she had vanished into thin air.
A thorough search of the surrounding area, including another nearby well, yielded
no trace of the woman, leavingmany to contemplate the possibility that the voice
crying out from the well may havebelonged to a ghostly presence. This inexplicable
occurrence has left the community of Salteoin a state of intrigue, with questions

(13:52):
outnumbering answers. The search for Juanita, whether a real person or an apparition,
has prompted locals to speculate about thesouper natural and the unexplained, creating
a mystery that continues to baffle bothauthorities and residents alike. A Malaysian man

(14:15):
recently encountered a spine shilling experience duringhis stay at a hotel in bukt Mara,
which he documented on TikTok. Theman arrived at the hotel around seven
nine pm and proceeded to check intohis room. Initially, everything seemed normal,
but within just two minutes he claimedto have experienced unsettling disturbances. According

(14:37):
to his account, he heard knockson the door and the toilets began flushing
unexpectedly. Feeling unnerved, he startedpraying for comfort. Strangely, the disturbances
ceased momentarily, but resumed right afterhe finished praying. Deciding to capture the
eerie events, he began recording theincident Curiously. Once he started recording the

(14:58):
parent normal activities seemed to subside.Nevertheless, he felt an overwhelming urge to
leave. Not wanting to take anychances, especially as he was the sole
guest in the entire hotel, hehastily packed his belongings, left his room,
and while waiting for the elevator,he alleged that he saw a ghost
just as the lift doors were closingat the lobby. He promptly returned his

(15:22):
room keys to the counter staff andhastily exited the hotel. The man recounted,
it was less than thirty minutes, and I was already disturbed. I
took out my phone to charge itfor a moment, and suddenly the door
behind me slammed shut. I calledout to inquire if anyone was there,
but there was no response. Alarmed, he decided to record his surroundings and
claimed to have heard the curtains inthe bathroom rustling as if being pulled,

(15:46):
though no one was present. Realizingthat the night ahead would be far from
peaceful. Despite having already paid forthe room, he made the swift decision
to check out after just twenty minutesof checking in. Many Nedisons express concern
for his safety, given the hotel'slong standing reputation for being haunted. Some
were relieved that he made it outunharmed, while others found it astonishing that

(16:10):
he had even checked into the hotelin the first place. The man clarified
that he shared his experience not tooffend anyone, but to serve as a
warning to others to steer clear ofthe haunted hotel. In light of these
events, it leaves you to ponderwould you have remained in the room under
similar circumstances, or would you havefollowed suit and made a hasty exit.

(16:33):
If you'd like to see the man'sTikTok video, I've linked to it in
the show description. In a harrowingincident along the Sanamkai Canal in Thailand's central
province of Samut Sa Khan, aThai woman narrowly escaped drowning, attributing her
near death experience to a chilling encounterwith a ghost that allegedly compelled her to

(16:57):
take a perilous leap off a bridge. The dramatic ordeal was captured on a
security camera, and the footage revealedthe woman's desperate struggle to stay afloat her
life hanging in the balance. Faithfully, a group of courageous individuals rushed to
her aid, successfully rescuing her fromthe water's clutches and promptly transporting her to

(17:18):
a nearby hospital. As the victim'scondition improved, her perplexed relatives embarked on
an investigation into the mysterious circumstances surroundingher bridge jump. Their astonishment deepened when
the woman recounted her unsettling encounter witha mysterious figure, a man cloaked entirely
in white, who she claimed coercedher into taking the perilous plunge. According

(17:41):
to her account, the enigmatic figurehad gestured to her while she was riding
her motorbike along the canal. Intrigued, she parked her vehicle and approached the
spectral stranger, only to lose consciousnesssoon after. The woman could recall only
one chilling utterance from the eerie encounterwith the man repeating hauntingly, I want

(18:02):
you to die. I want youto die. Upon awakening in the hospital,
the woman found herself in a stateof confusion. As she had no
prior health issues and had never harboredany thoughts of suicide. She firmly believed
that she had fallen under the sinisterinfluence of a vengeful spirit. News of
this spine tingling incident quickly spread, prompting another woman, a Numa tapyin Thong,

(18:26):
to come forward and share her owneerie experience related to the same event.
Anuma revealed that she and her motherwere traveling by car and had reached
that bridge at approximately nine thirty amon the day of the incident. To
her surprise, she spotted the sameman in white attire perched atop an electricity
pole, an eerie sight. Indeed, she immediately queried her mother about the

(18:49):
unsettling figure, but her mother claimednot to have seen anything out of the
ordinary. In an attempt to unravelthe mystery, Anuma returned to the bridge
for a clok her look, butfound no trace of the ghostly apparition.
Upon learning that another woman had alsoencountered the enigmatic figure, Anuma couldn't shake
off her goosebumps and decided to shareher own supernatural encounter with the media.

(19:14):
She even provided dashcam footage from hercar featuring her conversation with her mother,
who consistently denied seeing the spectral figure. It appears that urban legends may have
played a role in the supernatural encounterswitnessed by these two women. The set
Amcai Canal and its environs have longbeen associated with eerie tales, with some
Thai Internet users sharing on social mediathat the area was once a desolate spot

(19:37):
where individuals tragically chose to end theirlives. Additionally, stories of children drowning
in the canal and fatal boat accidentsonly add to the eerie aura surrounding this
location. Thanks for listening to ParanormalityMagazine. Get more information about the magazine

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
