Welcome everyone to our celebration of the Sunday Mass and
Ministry of the Passionist Community. It is September fourteenth, the
feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. So if you
have your prayer guide, take it out. Turn to the
beginning of Mass, and let us begin our celebration in
(02:26):
the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Love of God, the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with all of you and Spirit. And as we
come together to celebrate the sacred mysteries of our faith,
let us first pause and prepare our hearts for this
(02:47):
moment by asking forgiveness. Lord, Have mercy, Lord Christ, Have mercy, Christ, Lord,
have mercy, Lord Malmani, God, have mercy on us. Forgive
us our sins and bring us all to the gift
of everlasting life. Amen. Glory to God in the Highest
(03:08):
and on earth. Peace to people of good will. We
praise you, We bless you, we adore you, we glorify you,
We give you thanks for your glory. Lord, God, Heavenly King,
Oh God, Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only be godden Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. You
(03:31):
take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us.
You take away the sins of the world. Receive our prayer.
You are seated at the right hand of the Father.
Have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One.
You alone are the Lord. You alone are the most
Time Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory
(03:53):
of God the Father. Amen, and let us pray, O, God,
who wild that your only begotten son should undergrow the
cross to save the human race, grant we pray that
we who have known His mystery on earth may merit
(04:13):
the grace of His redemption in heaven through our Lord,
Jesus Christ, your son who lives and reigns with you
in unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
Speaker 5 (04:24):
Namen are reading from the Book of Numbers. With their
patients worn out by the journey, the people complained against
God and Moses, why have you brought us up from
Egypt to die in this desert where there is no
food or water. We are disgusted with this wretched food.
(04:45):
In punishment, the Lord sent among the people's seraph serpents,
which bit the people so that many of them died.
Then the people came to Moses and said, we have
sinned in complaining against the Lord, and you pray the
Lord to take the serpents from us. So Moses prayed
for the people, and the Lord said to Moses, make
(05:09):
a seraph and mount it on a pole, and if
any who have been bitten.
Speaker 6 (05:13):
Look at it, they will live.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
Moses accordingly made a bronze serpent and mounted it on
a pole. And whenever anyone who had been bitten by
a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he lived the
word of the Lord.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Thanks to God.
Speaker 7 (05:43):
Do not forget the works of the Lord.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
Give you, my people, to my teaching.
Speaker 7 (06:07):
Incline your ear to the words of my mouth.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
I will open my mouth in a parable and utter
hidden lessons of forfast.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Do not for.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Philippies,
brothers and sisters. Christ Jesus, though he was in the
form of God, did not regard equality with God something
to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form
of a slave, coming in human likeness, and found human
(07:07):
in appearance. He humbled himself become obedient to the point
of death, even death on a cross. Because of this
God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name
which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus,
every knee should bend of those in heaven and on
(07:30):
earth and under the earth, and every tongue confessed that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father,
the Word of the Lord.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
Thanks me to God.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
All Luu, all Lua, all u ya.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
The Lord be with your spirit. A reading from the
Holy Gospel. According to John, Jesus said to Nicodemus, no
one has gone up to heaven except the one who
has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And
just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
(08:34):
so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so
that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.
For God so loved the world that he gave us
his only son, so that he who believes in him
might not perish, but might have eternal life. For God
(08:58):
did not send his son into the world world to
condemn the world, but that the world might be saved
through him. The Gospel of the Lord.
Speaker 8 (09:10):
Praised you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Thirty eight years ago today, I stood in this chapel
in that ambo, and I proclaimed the gospel that I
just proclaimed, and then began to preach. And it was
the celebration of jubilees of a number of our men.
(09:47):
Some of them were celebrating fifty years as a priest,
some fifty years as being passionists, some sixty years as
being passionist. And I had only been a priest for
one year and three months, and yet these men asked
me to preach their jubilee. And it was the first
time I was ever in the lower church here for
(10:10):
any kind of celebration, and I was sort of overwhelmed
before I started. I was humbled, not in the same
way Jesus was humbled when he came into the world,
but I was humbled just that these men would want
me to proclaim the word for them this day. And
(10:33):
I spent some time here before the celebration, sitting over
there looking at that cross, And if you've ever looked
at that cross, it's sort of out of place. It's
bigger than life. This sort of lower church is a
very small area. The ceilings are low, and the cross
(10:55):
sort of takes up everything. But there was some sort
of grace, some sort of comfort in sitting and just
reflecting that helped me to make it through that homily
that day, celebrating with these men who had lived their
(11:16):
life as passionists. This feast the exaltation of the Cross.
We celebrate as a church, but certainly we celebrate it
as passionist. That cross is the lens through which we
look at life, and it always calls us to a
sense of humility, to a sense of things are bigger
(11:41):
than ourselves, and certainly the journey of Jesus is much
larger than our own journey of living life. In nineteen
eighty four, I had the opportunity to study in the
Holy Land for three months, and at the very end
of my studies, I decided I wanted a little sort
of keepsake to remind me of my experience. And I
(12:04):
wandered through the Old City one of the last days
I was there, and rather than buying something big and
sort of different, I settled on this little cross. It's
made of all of wood, and it probably cost me
all of about fifty cents, and I've kept it in
(12:26):
my pocket. Now, this isn't the cross that I bought.
I gave that away many, many, many times. I've given
thousands of these little crosses the way to kids, to
young adults, to retreatings, to people who have made missions.
And I always say to them, hang on to it,
keep it in your pocket or in your purse. And
(12:49):
when you have one of those moments that's a struggling moment,
put it in your hand and make a fist, squeeze
as hard as you can, and when you feel it hurt,
open your hand. It'll tell you three things. One, God
is with you when it hurts. Two, God is with
(13:10):
you when it doesn't hurt. Thus, God is always with you,
and you're never alone. We celebrate that gift that love today,
and hopefully the Cross is not something we look upon
as failure, as struggle, as hurt, as pain, but as
(13:34):
the tremendous love that God offers us each and every
day of our life. I believe in one God, the
Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
(13:58):
the only begotten Son of God, God, born of the
Father before all ages, God from God lighte from Light,
True God, from True God, begotten, not made consubstantial with
the Father. Through him all things were made for us
and for our salvation. He came down from Heaven and
by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary
(14:21):
and became man for our sake. He was crucified under
conscious pilot. He suffered death and was buried, and rose
again on the third day, in accordance with the scriptures,
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom
(14:42):
will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son,
is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I
confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I
(15:04):
look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the
life the world to come. Amen, let us cry out
with joy to the God of Mercy as we place
our prayers and needs before him.
Speaker 5 (15:18):
Our responses.
Speaker 6 (15:19):
Lord, here our prayer.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
We pray that the cross will always be a sign
of God's great love for us. May it always challenge
us to choose life over death, truth over lies, peace
over violence, and love over selfishness.
Speaker 6 (15:39):
We pray to the Lord Lord here our prayer.
Speaker 5 (15:43):
We pray that all nations and peoples will turn away
from hate, disrespect, injustice and war and choose life, respect, mercy,
and peace.
Speaker 6 (15:56):
We pray to the Lord Lord here our prayer.
Speaker 5 (16:00):
Pray for the intentions of our benefactors, the intentions of
our Sunday Mass faith community that will be placed next
to the altar, and for Margaret Waltman, for whom we
pray in a special way at this mass.
Speaker 6 (16:14):
We pray to the Lord Lord here prayer.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Loving God, show us your mercy and grant us your
saving help here and respond to our prayers out of
your unconditional love. Through Christ, Our Lord.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Lord, O.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Don junta pors chang by Oh.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
Horning Ho.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Charitess.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Friends in faith, pray that my sacrifice and yours may
be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. May the Lord
accept the sacrifice at our hands for the praise and
glory of His Name, for our good and the good
of all His Holy Church. May this oblation, Lord, which
on the altar of the Cross counseled the offense of
(18:02):
the whole world, cleanse us. We pray of all our
sins through Christ, our Lord, the Lord be with you.
Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord,
our God, truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father,
(18:25):
Almighty and eternal God, for you have placed the salvation
of the human race on the wood of the cross,
so that where death arose, life might again spring forth,
and the evil one who conquered on a tree might
likewise on a tree be conquered. Through Christ, our Lord.
(18:48):
Through him, the angels praise your majesty. Dominions adore, and
powers tremble before you. The heavens and the virtues of heaven,
and the blessed Seraphim worship together with exaltation. May our voices.
We pray, join theirs in humble praise, as we acclaim.
Speaker 8 (19:23):
Love, love, your glory, blessy easy.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Name, Lord, Oh.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
You're indeed holy, Oh Lord, the font of all holiness.
Make holy. Therefore these gifts we pray by sending down
your spirit upon them like the de fall, so that
they may become for us the bomb and blood of
our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time that he was
betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, Jesus took bread
(20:12):
and gave you thanks, broke the bread gave it to
his disciples, saying, take this all of you, and eat
of it, for this is my body which will be
given up for you. In a similar way, when supper
(20:42):
was ended, he took the chalice once more, giving thanks.
He gave it to his disciples, saying, take this all
of you, and drink from it. For this is the
chalice of my Blood, the blood of the New and
eternal cup in it, which will be poured out for
(21:02):
you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do
this in memory of me the mystery of faith.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Saved Cross Satis.
Speaker 1 (21:45):
Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of His death and resurrection,
we offer you Lord, the bread of life and the
Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us
worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly,
we pray that, partaking of the body and blood of Christ,
we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord,
(22:06):
your church spread throughout the world, bring her to the
fullness of charity. Together with Leo, our Pope, and Robert,
to our Bishop and all whom you call to the ministry,
service and mission of your Church. Remember also our sisters
and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of
the resurrection, all who have died in your mercy, welcome
(22:27):
them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us.
Speaker 8 (22:31):
All.
Speaker 1 (22:31):
We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with Blessed Joseph her spouse, with the blessed Apostles, and
all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,
we may marrit to be coeres to eternal life, and
may praise and glorify you through your son Jesus Christ,
(22:54):
Through him and with him and in him, Oh God,
Almighty Father, in unity of the Holy Spirit, All glory
and honor is yours.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
Forever and ever.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
The Savior's command informed by divine teaching, we humbly pray
our Father, who are in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name,
Thy Kingdom. Come. Thy will be done on earth as
it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trest uses, as we forgive those
(23:46):
who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray
from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that
by the help of your mercy, we may be always
free from sin. Say from all distress, as we await
the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
And Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles peace,
I leave you my peace. I give you. Look not
on our sins, but look on the faith of your Church,
and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with
your will. Who live and reign forever and ever. The
Peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us
(24:34):
share that with one another. Lamb of God, you take
away the sins of the world.
Speaker 6 (24:50):
Have mercy on us.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.
Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away
the into the world. Grant us peace. Behold the Lamb
(25:13):
of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of
the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of
the Lamb.
Speaker 6 (25:20):
Lord.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.
