Ministry of the Passionist Community. It is October nineteenth, the
twenty ninth Sunday of ordinary time. So if you're using
one of our prayer guides, take it out. Turn to
the beginning of Mass, and let us begin our celebration.
The name of the Father and of the Son and
(02:22):
of the Holy Spirit. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God, the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with all of you and with you. And as
we gather to celebrate these mysteries of our faith, let
us first pause, prepare our hearts for this moment, this
encounter with God, by asking forgiveness. Lord, Have mercy, Lord Christ,
(02:48):
have mercy. Lord, Have mercy, Lord Man when doy God,
have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring
us all to the gift of everlasting life. Yeah, and
let us pray, Almighty, ever Living God, grant that we
may always conform.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Our will to yours and.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
Serve your majesty in sincerity of heart through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son who lives and reigns with you
in unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
Speaker 7 (03:24):
A reading from the Book of Exodus. In those days
Emelek came in waged war against Israel. Moses therefore said
to Joshua, pick out certain men, and tomorrow go out
and engage Amelek in battle. I will be standing on
top of the hill with the staff of God in
(03:46):
my hand. So Joshua did as Moses told him. He
engaged Amelek in battle after Moses had climbed to the
top of the hill with Aaron and her. As long
as Moses kept his hands raised up up, Israel had
the better of the fight. But when he let his
hands rest, Amelek had the better of the fight. Moses hands, however,
(04:09):
grew tired, so they put a rock in place for
him to sit on. Meanwhile, Aaron and Her supported his hands,
one on one side and one on the other, so
that his hands remained steady till sunset, and Joshua mowed
down Amelek and his people with the edge of his sword.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
The word of the Lord, Thanks to God.
Speaker 12 (04:48):
Our help is from the Lord who made Heaven, and.
Speaker 9 (04:58):
Our help is the Lord who.
Speaker 12 (05:04):
And I lift up my eyes to the mountains from
where shall come my hell? My help shall come from
the Lord who made Heaven, and our help istrong love.
Speaker 7 (05:32):
And reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul to
Timothy Beloved remain faithful to what you have learned and believed,
because you know from whom you learned it, and that
(05:54):
from infancy you have known the sacred scriptures, which are
capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in
Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is
useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training
in righteousness, so that the one who belongs to God
(06:16):
may be competent, equipped for every good work. I charge
you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,
who will judge the living and the dead, and by
his appearing and his kingly power, proclaim the word. Be persistent,
whether it is convenient or inconvenient. Convince reprimand and courage
(06:42):
through all patience and teaching the word of the Lord.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Thanks be to God.
Speaker 12 (06:54):
Ah llu yah ah la lou yah oh maedy ah.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Ah, the Lord be with you. A reading from the
Holy Gospel.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
According to Luke, Jesus told his disciples a parable about
the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
He said, there was a judge in a certain town
who neither feared.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
God God nor respected any human being, and a widow
in the town used to come to him and say,
render a just decision for me against my adversary. For
a long time, the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought,
(08:05):
while it is true that I neither fear God nor
respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me,
I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she
finally come and strike me. The Lord said, pay attention
(08:25):
to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then
secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out
to him day and night?
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Will he be slow to answer them?
Speaker 4 (08:42):
I tell you he will see to it that justice
is done for them speedily. But when the Son of
Man comes, will he find faith on earth?
Speaker 1 (08:57):
The gospel of the Lord?
Speaker 5 (09:00):
Crazy, Lord, you subscribe.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
A number of.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Years ago, I was up late one night, couldn't sleep,
and so I gave in to turning the television on,
and I was surfing around and I came across one
of the late night talk shows and the host and
his guests were having this conversation. And I recognized the guest,
(09:34):
and I thought, well, let me hear what he has
to say.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
What are they talking about?
Speaker 4 (09:40):
And he was a news personality of that particular point
in time, and they were talking about the events of
the day, and the host said to the guest at
one point, you have a little catchphrase that you always
use in your program.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
And the guest said, yes, I do. And who says,
what is it again? And he said, get after it?
Or let's get after it?
Speaker 8 (10:08):
And he said, you know, in my business and what
I have to do, I have to be persistent, I
have to be aggressive, I have to hold people's feet
to the fire.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
But I also have to be fair, and I have
to be respectful, and I have to be understanding. Well,
that little phrase get after it sort of stuck with me,
and oftentimes when I'm reading or praying with the scriptures,
as I did this week with these readings, it sometimes
(10:43):
comes to me and I think it might be an
appropriate phrase for our scriptures today when you think about it,
Moses and Aaron and her had to get after it
in order to save the Israelites from a Malik and
his army. Saint Paul writing to Timothy, one of the
(11:08):
new leaders of one of the churches that Paul founded,
He's sort of entrusting to Timothy the leadership of that church,
and he's sort of saying to him, get after it,
be persistent, work hard, make sure your community remains a
community of faith. And then, certainly in our gospel today,
(11:30):
the little parable that Jesus tells the widow gets after it,
and she gets after it so much that someone who
really doesn't care about her is willing to say, well, Okay,
I'll give a just judgment in this case because I'm
afraid of this woman.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Getting after it.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
As a person of faith, normally means prayer, a commitment
to prayer and working at and being persistent with it
and allowing it to flow from our life, allowing it
to be part of how we live out our faith.
(12:15):
And I think that's what our readings are reminding us of.
That we have a lot of things that help us
in our journey of faith, but what mostly helps us
is our opportunity to have a conversation with God, which
is what prayer is all about. And there's a little
(12:35):
phrase that I often refer to that helps me in
my own personal prayer, prayer.
Speaker 1 (12:42):
And it says, pray with faith and believe in the
power of your prayer.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
And hopefully that's what we do each and every Sunday
as we gather at this table to pray the ultimate
prayer to God to help us in our journey of
life and faith.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
I believe in one God, the.
Speaker 4 (13:12):
Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
I believe in one.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born
as the Father before all ages.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
God from God, Light from Light, True God, from true.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
God, begotten, not made consubstantial with the Father. Through him
all things were made for us and for our salvation.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
He came down from.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
Heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the
Virgin Mary, and became man for our sake. He was
cluarsified under ponscious pilot. He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day. In accordance with
the scriptures, he has sent it into heaven seated at
the right hand of the Father. He will come again
(14:03):
in glory to judge the living and the dead, and
this kingdom will have no end.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, but
with the Father and the Son, is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
I believe in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and
I look forward through the resurrection of the dead.
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Life the world to come. Amen.
Speaker 4 (14:35):
We believe our help is from the Lord who made
heaven and earth, and so we place our prayers in
God's loving hands.
Speaker 1 (14:44):

may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

the world and arrange the changing of times and seasons.
You formed us in your own image, and set us

in your name over all that you have made, and

They may become for us the body and blood of
our Lord Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
At the time that Jesus was betrayed.
Speaker 4 (19:14):
And entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and,
giving thanks, broke it gave it to his disciples, saying,
take this all of you, and eat of it, for
this is my body which will be given up for you.
(19:46):
In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took
the chalice once more, giving thanks, He gave it to
his disciples, saying, take this all of you, and drink
from it. For this is the chalice of my blood,
the blood of the New and eternal Covenant, which will
be poured out for you and for many for the
(20:10):
forgiveness of sin.
