Speaker 9 (04:30):
A reading from the Book of Syrac The Lord is
a God of justice, who knows no favorites, though not
unduly partial towards the weak. Yet he hears the cry
of the old pest. The Lord is not death to

(04:52):
the of the orphan, nor to the widow. When she
pours out her complaint. The one who serves God willingly
is heard his petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of
the lordly pierces the clouds. It does not rest till

(05:16):
it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the
most high response judges justly and affirms the right, and
the Lord will not delay. The word of the Lord.

Speaker 10 (05:51):
Is the cry of the Oh, the cry I will
bless the Lord at all times.

Speaker 11 (06:12):
Praise of him is always in a mind.

Speaker 12 (06:16):
In the Lord, my soul shall make its post.

Speaker 11 (06:21):
The humble shall here, and the big glad Lord, the
crime Lord.

Speaker 9 (06:40):
A reading from the second Letter of Saint Paul to
Timothy Beloved. I am already being pulled out like a libation,
and the time of my departure is at hand. I
have competed well, I have finished the race.

Speaker 12 (07:04):
I have kept the faith. From now on.

Speaker 9 (07:09):
The crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the
Just Judge, will award me on that day, and not
only to me, but to.

Speaker 12 (07:22):
All who have longed for his appearance.

Speaker 9 (07:26):
At my first defense, no one appeared on my behalf,
but everyone deserted.

Speaker 12 (07:34):
Me may not be held against them.

Speaker 9 (07:39):
But the Lord stood by me and gave me strengths,
so that through me the proclamation might be completed and
all the gentiles might hear it, and I was rescued
from the lion's mouth.

Speaker 6 (07:59):
The Lord will.

Speaker 9 (08:00):
Rescue me from every evil threat, and will bring me
safe to His heavenly kingdom.

Speaker 12 (08:08):
To him be glory forever and ever.

Speaker 9 (08:12):
Amen the word of the Lord God.

Speaker 13 (08:24):
Ah then, and the Lord be with you.

Speaker 8 (08:49):
This is a reading from the Holy Gospel, according to Luke,
and Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced
of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. Two people
went up to the temple area to pray. One was

(09:10):
a pharisee, the other a tax collector. The pharisee took
up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, Oh God,
I thank you that I am not like the rest
of humanity, greedy, dishonest, adulteress, or even like this tax collector.

(09:31):
I fast twice a week, I pay ties.

Speaker 3 (09:33):
On my whole income.

Speaker 8 (09:36):
But the tax collector stood off at a distance and
would not even raise his eyes to Heaven, but beat
his breast and prayed, Oh God, be merciful.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
To me a sinner. I tell you.

Speaker 8 (09:54):
The latter went home justified, not the former, For whoever
exalts themselves will be humbled, and the one who humbles
themselves will be exalted.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
The Gospel of the Lord.

Speaker 5 (10:12):
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
The people who we despise.

Speaker 8 (10:25):
You know, it's interesting that Jesus teaches this parable today
and focuses on that idea of the temptation that we
have or the reality that we have, that we easily
can slip into despising other people. Despise us a very
strong word, to despise others, and Jesus gives that parable,

(10:45):
beautiful parable. He sets up the difference between this pharisee again,
a religious leader who comes into the temple, the most
sacred of places, and clearly his heart is filled with
the people he despises in order of course, to lift
him self up before God. His heart is completely tied
up in the others who are not as good as

(11:08):
he is, kind of proving his case to.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
God how good he is.

Speaker 8 (11:13):
And of course next to him, behind him is the
tax collector, not a religious person, not a person that
people had any respect for. Person was publicly a sinner,
and yet that person sits there before God humbly trying
to receive something from God. See, it's interesting when Jesus,

(11:34):
of course, what he tells us, the Pharisee is the
one who's so full of despising others. You know, the
Pharisee clearly forgets where he comes from, doesn't he. I mean,
the Pharisee comes from the Jewish people. The Pharisee comes
from a group of people who were despised by Pharaoh
and the oppressors, you know, enslaved, dehumanized. That's their heritage,

(11:57):
that their heritage, that they were despised, and God heard
their cries, as the first reader reminds us today of
who God hears. God heard the cries of their oppression,
living under that, being despised and dehumanized, and God could.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Not tolerate it.

Speaker 8 (12:13):
But God entered their life, walk with them through the
desert until they could understand that they were the chosen,
that they were not the ones despised, but rather the beloved.
You see, the Pharisees completely lost. That hasn't he completely
lost it? Because his heart has gotten tied up? And
who's not as good as he is? And how good
he is? He's telling God who he is. The tax

(12:36):
collector is trying to understand who God is, and even
humbly trying to be formed or changed by God. That's
why Jesus says does that the people getting into the
Kingdom of God are not the pharisees and the scribes.
It's the prostitutes and the tax collectors, the people that
are ready to be transformed, ready to become like God,

(13:00):
with hearts that are not tied up in despising others,
but rather freed to love others, all others. So as
we listen to this gospel today and we're challenged by it,
maybe it's just a moment for all of us, because
all of our hearts can seep into this. There's always
a temptation to find people we can despise or dislike

(13:21):
or look down upon, not good enough, not deserving enough.
And yet Jesus reminds us, the more full our heart
is of that, the sicker our soul is, and the
father in fact we are from God. The mystery of God,
that love that can love us unconditionally, transform us profoundly,

(13:42):
and the love that our only mission is to share
it with all peoples. I believe in one God, maker
of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

Speaker 3 (14:06):
I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten
Son of God.

Speaker 8 (14:11):
Born of the Father before all ages, God from God.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
Light from Light, true God, from true.

Speaker 8 (14:17):
God, begotten, not made consubstantial with the Father. To him
all things were made for us and for our salvation.
He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit
was imparted.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
To the Virgin Mary and the king Man. For our sake.

Speaker 8 (14:36):
He was crucified under conscious pilot to suffered death from
his burier. Rose again on the third day in accordance
with the scriptures.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom
will have no end.

Speaker 8 (14:55):
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver
of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son to the Word
and glorified, who has spoken to the prophets. I believe
in one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one
baptism for the beginners of since I look forward to

(15:16):
the resurrection.

Speaker 6 (15:18):
And the life of the world to come.

Speaker 14 (15:20):
Amen.

Speaker 8 (15:21):
And we know that the one who serves God willingly
will be heard, and so we pray today are petitions
that will reach the heavens.

Speaker 9 (15:30):
Our response is Lord, here our prayer. We pray in
a special way for Marietta Testa Magiore the intention for
this mass.

Speaker 12 (15:43):
Today. We pray to the Lord Lord.

Speaker 9 (15:47):
Here we pray for Pope Leo and all in leadership
that the wisdom and grace of God's presence and spirit
will guide their every decision and action.

Speaker 12 (16:03):
We pray to the Lord Lord.

Speaker 9 (16:07):
We pray for the intentions of our benefactors, the intentions
of our Sunday Mass faith community that will be placed
next to the altar, and for all who are in
need of prayer this day.

Speaker 12 (16:22):
We pray to the Lord.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Lord, Merciful God.

Speaker 8 (16:27):
We humbly ask that you hear our prayers and respond
to them out of your love to Christ our Lord, Amen.

Speaker 3 (16:44):
Us God, so.

Speaker 10 (17:10):
Is my.

Speaker 15 (17:13):
Lord, kimyst.

Speaker 8 (17:50):
And now pray, brothers and sisters, that our sacrifice may
be made acceptable to God, our loving Father.

Speaker 16 (17:55):
Lord, accept the sacrifice of your hands from the praise
and gloria pazzi for our good good all holy church.

Speaker 8 (18:03):
And look, we pray, O Lord on the offerings we
make to your Majesty that whatever is done by us
in your service may be directed above all to your glory.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.

Speaker 8 (18:16):
And the Lord be with you, and lift up your hearts,
and let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

Speaker 3 (18:25):
It is truly right, and it is truly just.

Speaker 8 (18:27):
It is our duty and our salvation always in every
way to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and
ever living God, for you laid the foundations of the
world and have arranged the changings of time and seasons.
You formed us in your own image.

Speaker 3 (18:45):
And set us over the whole.

Speaker 8 (18:47):
World and all of its wonder to serve creation in
your name. And so now we praise you for all
your mighty works. And so with angels and saints we
praise you as in joyful celebration.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
We acclaim, O.

Speaker 17 (19:11):
Lord God, lot heavy and our fall your glory, Oh.

Speaker 18 (19:21):
Sed seed, easy look God, see the name of the Lord,
Oh Lolority Lord.

Speaker 8 (19:39):
And you are indeed holy, Oh Lord, the font of
all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts by saying forth
your spirit upon them like the do four, that they
may become for us the body and the blood of
our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time that Jesus was
betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and,

(20:04):
giving thanks, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples,
and said, take this, all of you in need of it,
for this is my body, which will be given up
for you. A similar way, when supper was ended, Jesus

(20:29):
took the chalice, and, once more, giving you thanks, Father
gave the chalice to his disciples and said, take this
all of you and drink from it, for this is
the chalice of my blood, the blood of the New
and everlasting Covenant. It will be poured out for you
and for many for the forgiveness of sins. And do
this in memory of me, our mystery of faith.

Speaker 19 (21:03):
Save us savor of the world, for by not roan
you sat Us.

Speaker 8 (21:19):
And therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death
and resurrection, we offer you Lord, this bread of life,
this chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held
each of us worthy to be in your presence and
to minister to you.

Speaker 3 (21:33):
And humbly we.

Speaker 8 (21:34):
Pray that by partaking in the body and the blood
of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the
Holy Spirit. And Lord, remember your Church spread throughout the world,
and bring us to the fullness of charity, together with
Leo our Pope, with Robert our Bishop, and with all
who serve your Holy people. And remember also our brothers

(21:57):
and our sisters who are falling asleep in the hope
of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy.
Welcome them into the light of your face, and have
mercy on us.

Speaker 13 (22:09):
All.

Speaker 8 (22:09):
We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with Joseph her spouse, with the blessed Apostles, and all
the holy women and holy men who have pleased you
throughout the ages, that one day we might become coeres
to eternal life, and may praise you and glorify you
through your son Jesus Christ, for through him, with him

(22:36):
and him all God, Almighty Father, in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever
and ever. And as the beloved daughters and Sons of God,

(23:00):
we join and we pray, as Jesus.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Taught us, our Father, who are in heaven, Hallowed be
thy name, Thy Kingdom, Come on earth as it is
in Heaven.

Speaker 6 (23:13):
Give us to stay our daily bread and.

Speaker 3 (23:15):
For us our trust uses as we do those trust us.

Speaker 5 (23:20):
Against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
From evil and deliver us.

Speaker 8 (23:26):
Will we pray from every evil, and graciously grant peace
in our days, that by your mercy we might be
always free from sin and protected from all anxiety and distress.
As we wait in joyful hope for the coming of
our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Speaker 6 (23:44):
For the kingdom and power. And they are yours now.

Speaker 8 (23:48):
And Lord Jesus, you said to your apostles, I leave
you peace and my peace I give you. Look not
on our sins, Lord, but look on our faith, the
faith of your people, the Church. Gracious, grant us peace
and unity. They're in accord with your will, You who
live and who reign forever and ever.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
And may that peace of the Lord be with you always.

Speaker 17 (24:12):
And with your experience.

Speaker 8 (24:13):
And here and at home, may we offer one another
a sign of that peace.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
Lamb of God can take away the sins.

Speaker 6 (24:25):
Of the world.

Speaker 16 (24:28):
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.

Speaker 6 (24:33):
Lamb of God. If you take away the sins of
the world, grants us peace.

Speaker 8 (24:45):
And behold the Lamb of God. Behold the one who
takes away the sin of the world. Happy we called
and invited to the supper of the Lamb.

Speaker 6 (24:53):
Lord, I'm not.

Speaker 16 (24:54):
Worriedy that you shoulder under my roof.

Speaker 20 (25:07):
Pee forgiven, be forgiven, Be forgiving of the sin.

Speaker 6 (25:17):
That you love, Be forgiven, pe forgiven.

Speaker 18 (25:29):
Jesus tied and rose, that you might know his love.

Speaker 16 (25:36):
Be forgiven, Be forging of the shin Jesus.

Speaker 3 (26:21):
Let us pray mayor sacraments the Lord.

Speaker 8 (26:25):
We pray perfect in us what lies within them, that
what we now celebrate in signs me we one day
possess in truth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen,
and the Lord be with you and with you, and
may Almighty God bless us the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit O. Our mass has ended, that is

(26:49):
going peace to love, to serve the Lord and one another.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
