Mom and dad.

Speaker 1 (00:12):

could make both you and your child's life easier and
more fun, and of course, fellow parents discuss and laugh
about what's happening in their child's world. Motherhood is a journey.
Thanks for joining me onmine. Welcome to Passport Mommy. I'm
Michelle Jerson, and I'm thrilled to have our first guest

(00:33):
on the show, Valerie Greenberg. We have had her on
the show before. She is a trusted lifestyle expert, entertainment correspondent,
and she knows how to just light up the screen.
And I am very impressed with her career because she's
been on air for E News, Inside Edition, the Wendy
Williams Show, and she's basically that go to guest that

(00:53):
people know they can call her. She'll have some great
advice and she will just know how to do a
really powerful segment. And now she has written a new
book that talks about all of this, which I'm thrilled
to talk about today, Valerie.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Thank you so much for joining me.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Michelle, that is such a beautiful intro.

Speaker 4 (01:10):
You have become a friend.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Over the years we've had the opportunity to work together,
you know, on different lifestyle segments. But this book you've
been validated, a playbook for confidence and connection, is so
near and dear to my heart, and I am just
floored and over the moon that I can sit down
with you and talk about the traction it's been getting
and why it's such an important read that'll make you

(01:32):
feel like your best friend is talking to you and
you'll learn how to be your own best friend.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah. Absolutely, you know.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
I have a friend of mine and she coaches people
on speaking when they are on TV segments or whatever
it is, and so much of what she instills is confidence.
And so let's talk about social anxiety, because I think
that is a big thing that can just slow a
lot of people down. What are some of your secrets
just to kick it to the curb and communication secrets
that just work for sure.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
So for me as a natural born extrovert, you know,
and figuring out who I even was from a business standpoint,
I said to myself, how can I share these secrets
with people? So depending upon the type of scenario that
you're in. First and foremost, I believe character is currency.
So if you lead with true authenticity, that's going to
be respected. People oftentimes get nervous that their title or

(02:21):
their bank account should be a reflection of how they're
perceived by those around them, but truly, that is not it.
I don't come from connections, I don't come from money,
but my parents taught me to always be proud of
who I am. And when you lead with that in
a room, no matter what type of scenario that you're in,
that can be felt by the people that actually deserve
to feel respected by you, and vice versa. So whether

(02:44):
you're talking to like the head of a network or
if you're talking to somebody that cleans the bathroom floor.
As the bottom line is, they're both extremely important because
if they lead with heart, that's so important. So here's
the thing, here's some tools. If you're going to a party,
maybe do a little bit of research. Ask your friend
who might be in the room. Now I don't mean
this from like a calculated type of perspective, but if

(03:05):
you're not a natural born extrovert, maybe think of but
you are a runner per se, maybe she'll tell you that, like,
there's some people there there are in a run club.
So find things that you know you have in common.
And then also, genuine compliments can also really be a
great way to break the ice with people. And also
don't realize that, like, if your compliment is not received

(03:28):
by the person, try not to let that get to
you because oftentimes, like I'll be doing these on the
street interviews with people to break the ice and to
demonstrate how beautiful it can be when a connection is
made by somebody who does receive like you going up
and saying hello, and just don't let it get you down.
If somebody is not open to receiving your authentic, genuine hello,

(03:50):
that's the thing. When you get good at that, that's
how you can sort of realize that what you're doing
is enough and it shouldn'tative response should not get in
the way of you being able to say hello to someone.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
New right exactly, and then it's on to the next person.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
Correct.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
I do agree with you.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
I think people like to also talk about themselves. So
I think if you ask the right questions and you,
like you said, you show a genuine interest.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
Right, yeah, no, you're absolutely like look at us, even
like we've actually never met in person, but over the
years we've developed and nurtured a relationship where there's a
mutual respect and we can talk about things and we
can discuss if there are genuine ways that we can
help each other. I mean, you having me on this
podcast right now, and then if you have questions in
the media space, that's what it's about, a conversation.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
I agree.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
And so let's talk about building those relationships with the
power players, because I feel like some people might think, oh,
they're out of my league. I can't talk to them.
How do I make the connections? What is your advice?

Speaker 3 (04:50):
You know, like I say, when you lead with character
as currency, that can be felt and sometimes you don't
even know you're talking to the most powerful person in
the room. Right Actually that actually happened to me at
an event the other day. But when you speak with
conviction and you get in touch with who you are
and you recognize your value, that will be resonated a

(05:11):
million times over with the most powerful person in the room. Also,
if you have an opportunity to say hello, But again,
it's not in a calculated way that's received well too.
I mean, I've been I have a self made billionaire
who's a friend of mine in the book, and he
just knows that I'm always vow, which is why he
wanted to lend his voice as a contributor. And when
you're genuine and when you're authentic and when you lead

(05:35):
with heart, I am telling you those people that are
the most powerful in the room will respect it. And
you have to remember that. So it's really being in
touch with who you are, recognizing your value, and being
open to sharing that not just with.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
Them, with everyone.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
But there is nothing wrong with saying hello and making
a connection and fostering it. If you have that opportunity,
say glow for it absolutely.

Speaker 1 (06:03):
And two, I think you know I'll never forget the
time that you know, my music teacher told me I'll
never sing.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Or I'll never do that.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
And I took it and I said, you're absolutely wrong.
And I went and you know, on to do so
many things in.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
That Oh my goodness.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
And it's like you cannot let a no get you down.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
That's right, I say, when those naysayers come at you,
you have the noise gets lower and lower by proving
it to yourself what you're capable of time and time again.
It's like there's proof in the putting, facing adversity and
being able to take like those personal Here's the thing.
When somebody says no to me, I don't look at

(06:42):
that as a no. I look at that as an
opportunity for growth. I look at that as it's not
necessarily the right time. I look at that as an
opportunity for me to go. I prove myself over and
I've proved to myself what I can accomplish, right, And
when I look at all the beautiful things that I've done,
I recognize that I don't need any other outside validation.

(07:03):
The only stamp of approval I need is my own.
So much of my business is subjective, right, and that's
something I have to be okay with. And when you
can take that personal factor outside of it, Look, I
would have never written a book if I took no
for an answer, because the amount of times that I
was told no, it's not the right place for you,

(07:24):
or that I didn't hear anything crickets.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Or that.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
I just won't stop. Tenacious behavior is respected, and I
remember getting like a c in my public speaking class,
and now I'm the person that's leading panels and moderating
and interviewing a list celebrities and asked to be doing
all the publics speaking. You can't let people get you down.

(07:49):
You have to realize also that perfection is not what
you should strive for. You strive to be the best.
You strive to learn the best of your ability. Recognize
that things take time, they're not overnight. The road is
not linear, and we have to get out of our

(08:09):
own way.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
And I used to have a mentor I still do
who always said the biggest thing is just showing up.

Speaker 2 (08:16):
Just show up. And I kept showing up and the same.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Thing, whether it's radio, whether it's public speaking, whether it's TV,
whatever it is that you're doing, Like you said, just
keep at it. And I felt at some times sometimes
in my career that the grit and the tenacity sometimes
outweighed the person that might have had more experience.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
So I'll tell you right now, and having been in
New York City for twenty years and having just a
mutual respect for all of my colleagues that are you know,
do things that are adjacent to me or parallel in
the entertainment space.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
We stuck it out together.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
That kind of respect, the way that people have been
embracing my book, have been embracing me, and the stories
like that outweighs everything else. Seeing those people line up
and want to support me and help me get the
message out that is like the most fulfilling, beautiful thing
that I could ever ever see. That's like everything in

(09:15):
a nutshell because of the fact that we have such
a mutual respect for each other and they want my
voice to get out there. And I'm telling you, if
you continue to be authentic and a good person and
stick to what you're passionate about, everyone will want to
hear this message.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Right. I agree.

Speaker 1 (09:31):
So, what are some last words of advice that you
have for somebody?

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Maybe they're just starting out.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
In their career, or maybe they're at a place where
they've been at their career for twenty years and they're
looking to take it to the next level. Because then
I feel like you have those people too who are like, oh,
I'm too old, and now it's like all the younger
gen z.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
They're going to get the.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Opportunities the limitations that we tend to inflict on ourselves.
We have to let those go. So first of all,
it's those small things that you can do for yourself,
don't forget it. I also believe that creativity should never
be stagnant. Don't let anything get you down. Just you
have to turn a no to a nod, and you

(10:09):
do that by recognizing that you are capable. When I
see something tangible, I see where I started out in
this business on a flipcam okay, and then getting to
a level of being able to be on national TV.
It's like, I know what I'm capable of when I
show myself what I've actually physically and tangibly done without

(10:30):
coming from connections the way that I'm respected by my
peers that I care for and respect. I have fifteen
different celebrities that are in this book as contributors. I
can't even believe that, but it's because of the fact
that they believe in the message that I'm trying to
share with the world as to tap into your superpowers
and strategies to take it to the next level. If
you're an introvert, we all have to surround ourselves with

(10:52):
people that want to build us up and not break
us down.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
Well, we are thrilled to have you Thank you so much,
Valerie Greenberg. Thank you for joining me today Onport Mommy.
I look forward to seeing where the book goes, where
your career escalates to next.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
And I just know you'll keep going and going.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
So thank you so much for your excellent advice and
for joining us today on Passport Mommy.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
Thank you, Michelle. It's always a pleasure. And remember everyone,
you've been validated.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
You're listening to Passport Mommy. I'm Michelle Jerson.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:22):
In the year since PTS Humane Science Education Division, teach
Kind Science launched a brand new kind of frog model
that is pleasant to use, ethically dissectible and silicon base
that gives students hands on experience without the cruelty and
the mess of cutting up real frogs is.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Being used in the classroom.

Speaker 1 (11:41):
Fifteen thousand kind frogs have been distributed by schools throughout
the US to ninety five percent of teachers who participated
in last year's pilot program and responded to follow ups
continue to use only animal free dissection. This is such
great news and so I'm so happy to have with
me today Samantha Crow. She's the Associate director of Science

(12:03):
Education from People for the Ethical Treatment of animals. Hi, Samantha, Hi,
thanks so much for having me on my pleasure. So
teach Kind's pilot program, launched last year, tell me the
difference between what it's doing now and the old traditional
method of dissection, So I.

Speaker 5 (12:22):
Like to say, dissecting animals forget about it. Support for
animal dissection, of course, is waning, and rightly so, you know,
so today's students can die, you know, can explore animal
anatomy without harming a single animal thanks to teach kind
Science's pilot program, which you mentioned, so kind frog is

(12:44):
impressing teachers and students all across the country, and teachers
call it a game changer in the classroom, and students,
of course, are mostly relieved to learn that they won't
have to dissect a real frog.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Yes, exactly, I still have memories of that, not necessarily
good ones, and so I'm glad to hear that children
and teachers are very happy with this. Where do animals
use for dissection come from to begin with? And how
many are dissected each year?

Speaker 5 (13:16):
So millions of animals are killed for animal dissection every
single school year in the United States. Millions keystone species
like frogs and some sea life are stolen from their
homes in the wild. It disrupts, you know, their ecosystems.
Of course, organs and fetal pigs come from slaughterhouses, which

(13:39):
nothing good ever happens there, and cats can sometimes come
from shelters and they could have been you know, someone's
lost or stolen animal companion.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Oh my gosh, that's crazy.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
And you know, I know, the whole point of teaching
kids about the anatomy and why they do the dissection
is to get them more interested in the sciences and
teach them more about the body and everything else that
goes with it. But is this dissuading students from actually
going into the sciences after they have to dissect an animal.

Speaker 5 (14:15):
It absolutely does. You know, studies show that forcing students
to dissect animals can deter them from the sciences. So
imagine the power dynamic in a middle school classroom, you know,
where you have maybe a couple of students who don't
want to dissect an animal, but they're they're not really
sure you know, how to speak up, or you know,

(14:36):
if their grade will be affected, or if their peers
will you know, make fun of them or whatever.

Speaker 4 (14:43):
It's it's a it's a very.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
Real, you know, situation that happens over and over in
our schools every year.

Speaker 1 (14:50):
And so what kind of recourse do parents and students
have if they don't want to dissect an animal but
they're being told that they must do it for class.

Speaker 5 (14:59):
Yeah, so thankfully, there are hundreds of districts nationwide that
have dissection choice policies in place.

Speaker 4 (15:06):
So dissection choice.

Speaker 5 (15:08):
Policy is just you know, it could be a law
or a policy that allows students to choose to not
dissect an animal and instead get an alternative assignment, you know,
such as kind frogs or some other digital dissection material.
You know, if if needed, I would I would absolutely say,

(15:28):
you know, teachers need to hear that students don't want
to cut apart animals and why and so, you know,
students and parents who are pushing back, I would encourage
them to you know, to speak you know, boldly and
politely to you know, the educator and to administration and
you know push back on that. You don't have to.

(15:50):
Students do not have to dissect animals. Teachers do not
have to dissect animals in their classroom. And parents should
have a say.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
Yeah, we absolutely should have a say.

Speaker 1 (16:00):
I mean it is our choice, it's our children, and
I'm so glad that you are doing this with PETA
the teach Kind program.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
I think it's wonderful.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Where can we go from more information to support the
program or to possibly try to get it into our school?

Speaker 5 (16:14):
Oh yes, we'd love that. So listeners can learn more
about our end our work to end animal dissection at
peda dot org slash dissection. Teachers can sign up for
the pilot program for free non animal anatoity resources at
teachkind dot org.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
And lastly, students, we encourage.

Speaker 5 (16:35):
You to check out PETA two dot com for help
with anything from navigating a lack of vegan food in
the cafeteria to opting out of animal dissection.

Speaker 2 (16:46):
To refig well. Thank you so much, Samantha Crowe.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
I appreciate you joining me today on Passport Mommy and
keep up the great work.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Thanks for all that you're doing.

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Thank you for having me my pleasure.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
I'm Michelders in the Passport Mommy.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
I'm so excited because next we are going to Universal
Studios in Orlando, so I will have a full report
of all the properties that we stayed at. We're actually
going for five days and We're staying at three different
properties because they each bring something really unique to the table.
So I will be talking all about those.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
In the next few weeks. I'm Michelle Jerson. More coming
up in a few.

Speaker 1 (17:21):
You're listening to Passport Mommy. I'm Michelle Jerson. It is
that time of year. Families are searching for the perfect
gift to make the holidays extra special. And guess what
today and today, Cassie Slain is live from the Disney
Store in Times Square and she's going to talk to
us about her top toy and gift picks for twenty

(17:41):
twenty five.

Speaker 2 (17:42):
Hi Cassie, thank you so much for joining me today.

Speaker 4 (17:45):
Hi, it's so good to be here. Thank you.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
My pleasure.

Speaker 1 (17:49):
So I know that there's just so many gift ideas
for the whole family.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
Where do we start?

Speaker 6 (17:55):
Yeah, well, you know what, I have three kids, so
I'm all about keeping the holidays simple and fun. And
what I really like when I'm looking for holiday shopping
is finding something for everyone.

Speaker 4 (18:06):
And that's why I love shopping with Disney Store.

Speaker 6 (18:09):
They have the cutest plush, they have adorable collectibles and
toys for older kids, great home decor and holiday gear.
So it's really all about the stories we love and
there's just a little magic in every store and online.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
Yes, So what's one gift that really brings the magic
to life for kids this year?

Speaker 4 (18:31):
Right?

Speaker 6 (18:31):
Well, you know what A couple really stand out for
me for magical and imaginative play. And I really love
the Bella b our Guest Singing teacart. It's so charming
and it's just perfect for those pretend to tea parties.
And it comes with Loomiere, Missus Potts and Chip and
it even plays the iconic song when you roll it around.

(18:55):
And also all right, here we go, this is a
big one Frozen two castle place, so it lights up
and it really lets kids step into.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
The world of Arundel so they can re.

Speaker 6 (19:07):
Enact their favorite stories from the movie or create their
own with their friends, Elsa, Anna and all their friends.

Speaker 4 (19:13):
So it's a great one.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
Yeah, that would be on my daughter's list. So do
you have any pigs.

Speaker 1 (19:19):
That feel like a little more special collectible? Because you
know my husband, even though he's not a kid, he
loves to collect. And I think everybody likes to get
those collectibles that they know that they'll have for a
long time to come.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
That's so true.

Speaker 6 (19:32):
And I really always like to have at least one
gift that's really meaningful and it just feels extra special.
And the snow White Holiday special Edition doll is really it.
It's beautiful, it's elegant, it has beautiful little holiday touches,
and it is a true keepsake and it's something you
know a child can really.

Speaker 4 (19:51):
Love now and treasure for years.

Speaker 6 (19:53):
And also, I mean, for all those Mickey Mouse fans
out there, the Mickey Mouse Roadster remote control car.

Speaker 4 (19:59):
So this is a really cute find.

Speaker 6 (20:00):
It has those classic Mickey Mouse details and it has
fun lighting and sound features. So it's great for the
gift for kids that love racing or just those Mickey
Mouse fans.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
Absolutely, so are the interactive toys, the high energy pigs?

Speaker 2 (20:18):
Are they still a big hit this year? Also?

Speaker 6 (20:22):
You know what those are always such a big, big,
big hit.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
They have that wow factor.

Speaker 6 (20:27):
Anything that moves, lights up and talks. I mean, kids
are all in and for now. I mean, look at
this lightning McQueen remote control bubble car.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
I mean, I wish I had this when I was
a kid.

Speaker 6 (20:38):
It has so many cool things that zooms around while
it blows bubbles. It has that fun race car energy
and sensory fun. It's great for indoors and outdoors, and
it has that instant wow as soon as you turn
it on, so that'll be great. And the Toy Story
talking action figures, so these are always a hit.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
They're always big, they say.

Speaker 6 (21:00):
Real lines from the movie, and they interact with each other.

Speaker 4 (21:03):
So if you have a Woody doll and a buzz.

Speaker 6 (21:05):
Doll, they will talk to each other when they're close.
And you know, you can also find those talking action
figures featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters, so they have
them and you know, every type and they're always a
big hit.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
So where can we go from more information on all
of the top picks that you just mentioned, because they
all sound super fun and I know my kids are like, yes,
I'm gonna want that, I'm gonna want that, I'm gonna
want that.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
Yes, great question.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
You know.

Speaker 4 (21:35):
For all of these amazing gift ideas.

Speaker 6 (21:38):
You can go to Disney Store or you can go
to disneystore dot com online.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
Thank you so much, Cassie Slain. I appreciate you joining
me today on Passport Mommy. Such great ideas for the season.
You can't go wrong with the Disney gift. I think
at any time, for your kids, for your nieces, for
your nephews, for that special person in your life. They
really have something for everyone. And for those that don't know,
where is the Disney Store in New York City.

Speaker 4 (22:03):
Oh, it is in Times Square. It is a spot
that you have.

Speaker 1 (22:07):
To hit absolutely, so whether you are local or whether
you're visiting.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
I know I am local, and I still don't go into.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
The Disney Store as often as I should.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
We often forget about it.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
So I think absolutely as a local, you have the
best store.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
Right here in Times Square. You need to go.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
And also if you're visiting for the holidays, what a
great place to stop in and stock up on all
of your holiday gifts. Cassie, thank you so much for
joining me today. I'm Passport mommy.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
Thanks so much. It's great to be here.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
And so we're talking about Disney and we are heading
down to Orlando, as I may have mentioned, and I'm
not sure if we're going to hit the Disney parks
this time, but we're definitely going to hit the Universal parks.
So I can't wait to come back and talk to
you all about those have a wonderful week, and thank
you for listening to Passport Mommy

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways. Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship. But when Larry is murdered during a home invasion in a rented beach house, Gabe has no choice but to look into what happened that night. To solve Larry’s murder, Gabe, and the whole Ortiz family, must ask each other tough questions.
