Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to Passport Mommy. I'm your host, Michelle Jerson. This
show is for anyone raising little humans. We feature experts
with tips and advice to enrich the lives of our children.
Mom and dad. Entrepreneurs tell us their inspiring stories, learn
about products that could make both you and your child's
life easier and more fun, and of course, fellow parents

(00:21):
discuss and laugh about what's happening in their child's world.
Motherhood is a journey. Thanks for joining me on mine.
Welcome to Passport Mommy. I'm Michelle Jerson, and this week
we are in Lake Placid. I cannot believe I have
not been to Lake Placid before, but it has been
on my bucket list for so long, and now I

(00:42):
see why. It is gorgeous up here. The nature is incredible.
There are so many activities and so many things to do,
and when you do visit Lake Placid, there is no
better place to stay than the Mirror Lake Inn. And
so I'm so happy to kick off the show with
me today with Andrew Wybrecht. He is the operations manager.
He's had quite a career before becoming operations manager. We'll

(01:04):
talk about that later. Andrew, thank you so much for
joining me today.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Absolutely, thanks for having me my pleasure.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
So tell me a little bit about the Lake Placid
region in general, because you were lucky enough to grow
up here.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, you know, I was born and raised here, and
you know, it's an incredible place. It's obviously you know,
it's famous for having hosted two Olympic Games, one in
nineteen thirty two and one in nineteen eighty and then
more recently we've had a you know, a recent flurry
of World Cup action. We've had ski jumping World Cups.

(01:38):
We have cross country World Cup finals this year, bots
Led and Loge. So you know, it's a sports town that,
unlike many Olympic sports towns, has retained its image as
an active Olympic venue or active sports venue. So it's
really you know, it was an exciting place to grow
up as an athlete, and it's you know, it's the

(02:01):
type of place that I left.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
I traveled all over the world.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
I you know, went to some of the most beautiful
places in the world, and I came back and only
wanted to be here. Every time I left, I always
just wanted to be back up here. But it's a
really special spot because not only do you have this
incredible town, but you're situated in the Atronic Park, which
is a six million acre park that's basically all forever wild.
You know, it was put into into that status in

(02:28):
the early nineteen hundreds, and so you know, from the
time that I grew up here in the eighties and
nineties till today, not a lot has changed. You know,
some buildings have been taken down and rebuilt, but in
terms of the level of development, you know, the views
that I had as a kid, the wilderness that I
enjoyed as a kid is all the same.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
As it as.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
It is now for my kids, which is really you know,
it's something really really special, and having lived other places
where that's not always the case, it's really cool to
see things, you know, change incrementally not lose the character
of what it's what the area is.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Sure, and I think people are especially now always trying
to figure out where should I move to? Where is
really great for my kids nature? You know, just and
I feel like here it's just a wonderland for kids.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah, no, it's We're incredibly fortunate not only to have
the kids have the ability to be engaged in winter
sports and summer sports, as well. But you know, in
particular with all the venues here, my oldest joughter is
a ski jumper. They all alpine ski, they all Nordic ski.
My mom came here as a loser. She was a
competitive loser. She was actually a national champion.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (03:37):
So it's you know, there's ample opportunities to do a
lot of really cool stuff here and a lot of
varied stuff that you know, really when you're talking about
the United States, you know it's here in Park City
that you have.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
These opportunities, and you know, it's just it's very very cool.

Speaker 1 (03:53):
Yeah. Absolutely. Okay, So let's talk about the Mirror Lake
in because it's been in your family also for quite
some time.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, we're next year, we're going on fifty years when
my dad took it over in nineteen seventy six. It's
been family owned and operated since it's beginning in nineteen
twenty four, So we've always been family owned and operated,
the original family of the Wycoff family. My dad managed
it for a year for them and then they offered
to sell it in nineteen seventy six. So yeah, no,

(04:22):
our legacy here here goes back pretty far, and you know,
it's grown and changed throughout the years, but again, the
character of what it is has always stayed the same, right, which.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Is great because I bet you have multi generations who
come here, the grandparents, bring the grandkids.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Now, yeah, absolutely, yeah, it's really nice.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
And so what would you say is what makes Mirror
Lake in so special compared to you know, maybe some
of the other properties in the area.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Well, you know, we're we're we're situated right on the
shores of merr Lake, which is obviously just this incredible, beautiful,
pristine lake. It's only non motorized boats that are on
the lake, and then we have incredible views of the
lake and mountains. We're close to Main Street without being

(05:07):
on main Street, so a little a little bit over, yes,
but you know, I mean I think I think what
makes us really special is the intention to detail being
a family owned and operated business. We we have the
ability to do things that you know, if you were
if you're trying to justify it to a corporate.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
You know, corporate.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Entity, yeah, maybe maybe you shouldn't spend your money that way,
and you know, we choose to and and we're we're
also very proud of our staff. I think that's that's
really the thing besides having a beautiful location, a beautiful
physical plant, our staff and just the dedication that our
staff has to our our mission is is really you know,
that's that's the comment that we get more than anything

(05:49):
when when people check out and they give us feedback
is our staff is so wonderful and friendly, and uh,
you know that's not something that I think can always
be taken for granted. Right now, there's not not that
people are unfriendly, but becoming different, more automated, and absolutely
you know, we we are very dedicated to the personal
touch and making sure that everybody's experience is exactly how

(06:11):
they they think that it should be, you know, and
we do everything within our power to make sure that
that's the case.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Right. And in addition, you are the only property for
Diamond accommodations and for Diamond restaurant.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Yeah, we we have both a four diamond designation I
think for over i want to say four decades now
for the hotel, and then we have a four diamond
restaurant as well. We're the only the only dual property
in the Ironic Park that has both designations and actually,
very very excitingly last year we got designated, we got

(06:46):
put in the Michelin Guide for Hotels, the new guide
they started doing. So we have we have the one
key designation and we're one of a couple upstate properties
that have that.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Congratulations. That's amazing. And the food, the cuisine is delicious.
The View Restaurant is phenomenal for dinner and for breakfast,
your breakfast buffet. Plus you have a sit down menu
as well. We do, and I just think the food
quality is amazing. And when a family is coming on
vacation and they want to relax and they want to
just take it all in, you don't want to have

(07:16):
to worry about, Hey, you know, maybe where do I
go to eat? Shore you, like you said, you're a
few minutes from main Street, which is great, or you
can eat here. You could do either or.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
And we have two restaurants on site too. You know,
we have the View Restaurant, which is our fine dining,
more upscale restaurant, and then across the street right on
the water, we have our kind of soup sandwich, yes
type place that that's a sit down restaurant, but it's
the coolest little kind of like a hole in the wall.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Yeah, and it's so great because I mean, you can't
get better views and it's casual, so you know, like
where we have a six and an eight year old,
whereas you know in the view we were like nice restaurant,
you know down there, you don't have to worry so much.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
Yeah, that's where I take my kids more more often
than not, for sure.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Yeah, No, it's great. It's best of both worlds and
you really can make a day here. You wake up
in the morning. Your fitness center is top of the line,
and I know that that's new as well. Tell me
about the fitness center the spa.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Yeah, we we we've kind of reimagined our spa over
the last few years. You know, the spa area has
been We've we've done upgrades. We've tried to bring in
some new modalities that that we hadn't had before. We
installed assault room a few years ago. We put in
a float therapy tank this last year. So we're trying
to you know, just just change, you know, make make

(08:37):
sure that we keep up with the wellness trends with
the spa itself. But even beyond that, we last year
we took out a couple of guest rooms that were
on the same level as the spa and put in
a much bigger fitness center workout facility, so we've got
a you know, a variety of machines, cardio machines, you know,

(08:59):
free weights, and than an expanded floor space which we
never had for for yoga and calistan X and things
like that. It's a great space. And we took where
the old space used to be. We expanded our gift
shop and built a much bigger gift shop, which really fun,
exciting fun.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yes, And I mean for me, when I arrived here,
I thought, oh my gosh, there's so much I want
to go to the gym, I want to get on
a kayak, I want to go for a run out side.
I mean, there's just there's so much to do. And
then we're just talking about the summertime activities, but I
would love to touch on what you can do here
in the winter time. And then in the next segment,
I want to hear about your backgrounds.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
Yeah, absolutely, yeah, so yeah, exactly. I mean Lake Placid
is really a four season resort. You know, all the way,
all the way through the fall, we have incredible hiking,
but as you get into winter, you know, obviously We're
famous for our skiing or at white Face Mountain, you know,
the cross country skiing at the mountain. Van Hovenburg venues,
Cascade Ski Touring. We actually have our sister property has

(09:58):
its own little Nordic st or that they grew them
out on the golf course over at the white Face
Club and Resort. So you know, there's a lot of
a lot of traditional winter time activities to do here.
But we also you know, we maintain two skating rinks
on the lake. The town and some of the businesses
around the lake maintain a path so you can skate

(10:18):
all the way around the lake at dog sleds are
running every day. There's a toboggan shoot on the other
end of the lake where you can take it to
boggin and it it you know, you walk up and
it spits you out on the ice. So, I mean,
it's just it's such an iconic winter town. You know,
there's a there's a couple like it in the world,
but this has its own type of character and features

(10:39):
that you don't necessarily get other places.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
Super fun, absolutely not, and I highly recommend you book
your trip now. Where can people go on the website
or to call to make their reservation.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yeah, if you want to make a reservation, you can
go directly to Merre lake In dot com www dot
mere lake in dot com, or you can call us
directly and one of our reservationists will always be there
to pick up the phone. They can be reached at
five P one eight five two three two five four four.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Terrific. We're speaking with Andrew wybrect and we are going
to talk next up about your storied career. And I'm
Michelle Jurson the Passport Mommy More coming up in a
few you're listening to Passport Mommy. I'm Michelle Jurson and
I'm here with Andrew Wybreckt. He is the operations manager
for Mirror Lake in and we've been talking about what
a phenomenal property. This is right in the heart of

(11:28):
Lake Placid. Highly recommended, four seasons all year round. If
you are a nature lover, if you love sports, bring
your kids here. You will have the best time. And so, Andrew,
before becoming operations manager, you had quite the Olympia Olympic career.
Olympian career, what do you say, Olympic cre You've had
quite the Olympic career.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, no, I did.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Yeah, so I As mentioned in the earlier I grew
up in Lake Placid. I was born and raised here,
and I had a older brother who was very into
ski racing, so that that meant that I got into
ski racing at a young age. And I was with
the local club, the New York State Ski Education Foundation,
so skied with them until I was sixteen, and then

(12:13):
I made the US national team in alpine skiing, which
for those of you that don't know, that's the one
where you go down.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Through the flags.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
You might be familiar with some of my old teammates
Body Miller, Lindsay Vaughn, Mikayla Schiffren, so that speed racing
type stuff. And I spent some time out Utah when
I made the ski team, and then went to my
first Olympics when I was twenty four in twenty ten,

(12:41):
and was fortunate enough to win a bronze medal there
in the Super G event, which is one of the
two speed events. It's the slightly slower of the two
speed events. And then four years later I went to
the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia and won a silver
medal in the same event, so amazing Wow.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
Wow, you messed a major town. Proud.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
It was a lot lot of fun. You know, we
we had from town.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
The first Olympics that I went to, there was I
think seventeen of us that were local Olympians that went
to the Vancouver Games, so we were very well represented. Myself,
I won one medal. Another local Billy Demong and Norda
combined which is combined ski jumping and cross country skiing.
He won two medals, a gold and a silver.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
I won my.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Bronze, So it was it was really you know, it
was a lot of fun. We had some local bops
letters that took the gold as well. Yes, so it
was quite the party when we all got home.

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Yeah, that's amazing. And now you showcase your medals right
here in the lobby.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Yeah, no, they're they're right behind the front desk.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah, that's great, and I love you met your wife. Well,
she grew up in Lake Placid, right, Yeah, we've known
each other. And then I mean, tell me this story.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
Yeah, so we we grew up together. We actually have
a picture when when we were doing christ was Santa
here when I was probably three years old and she
was maybe four years old. So yeah, I know, we
grew up together and started dating when I was in college.
When we were both in college, she was she was

(14:14):
at the University of Vermont. I was at Dartmouth, and yeah,
we started dating her. Her dad actually is an Olympian
as well. He was a ski jump Olympian in nineteen
sixty eight and Grenoble.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (14:26):
And you know, we knew each other growing up and started.

Speaker 3 (14:29):
Dating, got married, had a bunch of kids, and you
know that kind of the rest is history.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
And so do you think your kids will pick up
your legacy?

Speaker 2 (14:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (14:37):
So, you know, I mean, I'm very supportive of whatever
they want to do.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
You know, I don't I don't.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
I don't necessarily necessarily encourage them to become alpine racers,
just just knowing what I went through with injuries and
stuff like that. Right absolutely, if they have a passion
for it, I think it's you know, it's a it's
a great thing to do. And my oldest daughter is
very involved in ski jumping. So my father in law,
her grandfather, coaches the little kids, so he got her

(15:05):
into it a few years ago and she's she's really
enjoyed it. So you never know, right, she's she's driven
and motivated and my other kids are too, so we'll
see what happens.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
That's great. Yeah, well I will keep my eyes out
for the next you know. I think that's great. You know,
when you have parents who obviously have succeeded in a
certain field and to be able to pass that on
and to give them the lessons and then to let
them decide, hey, are they into it? And clearly they are.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
And that's that's all I can say with sports is
I think you got to got to give them the opportunities,
give them the tools, and and as a parent, step
back a little bit and let it let them take
over the rest. And you know, that's that's what my
parents did, and it was really successful for me.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
I think if they had been more involved, I probably.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
Would exactly exactly. That's how it goes. You push too much,
it's now and it's always a fine line, you know.
With me, I was very much into theater when I
was younger, and I introduced my daughter to it not
knowing and now, I mean, she's a non stop singing musical,
you know, so you never know how it's going to go.
But I think it's great what you're doing. If somebody
wants to say, bring their kids up here for maybe

(16:10):
I don't know, a few week program. Are their programs
in the area where they can come and maybe train
and supplement to what they're doing where they live.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Yeah, there are a number of programs.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
So the nice at the club that I grew up at,
they actually offer a winter term program for kids that
are you know, in their or you know ten, I
want to say, maybe it starts at twelve kind of
middle school age, and so kids have the opportunity to
come up, you know, bring their curriculum from home, go

(16:41):
in and either stay off campus or stay on campus
and you know, engage in a sport for one month
or up to four months.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
That's great.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
So yeah, it's a really really cool program.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
It allows kids to kind of dip their toe and
see see if they if they like that full on
lifestyle and you know, kind of take it from there exactly.

Speaker 1 (17:01):
Well, that's phenomenal. I think it's amazing how much this area,
like we talked about, has to offer for all types
of activities for kids. And I know we talked about
your sister property, White Face Club and Resort, and next
up I'm going to be speaking with Tracy Brooks. But
you know, if you really want to, you can purchase
a plot of land up here too and stay either
year round or seasonally.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
That's right.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
Yeah, No, The White Face Club's a beautiful property. You know,
it's incredibly maintained, with an eighteen hole championship golf course,
five tennis courts, pickleball courts, their own little marina. So
it's it's kind of a little little slice of han
over there and definitely worth checking out.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
Absolutely well, Andrew Wybreck, thank you so much for joining
me today on Passport Mommy. Thank you for having us here.
It's been phenomenal and I think this is going to
be a tradition.

Speaker 5 (17:48):
Good.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Well, we appreciate having you absolutely.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
I'm Michelle jurreson the Passport Mommy. More coming up in
a few you're listening to Passport Mommy. I'm Michelle Jerson,
and we just talked all about the Mirror Lake in
which is such a beautiful place to stay if you're
looking to get away, Well, what if you wanted a
permanent home so that you can have a home in
the Adirondacks all year long to come up to whenever

(18:12):
you'd like. That is the white Face Club and Resort,
and so I'm thrilled to have with me today Tracy Brooks.
She is the CEO of white Face Companies. Hi Tracy, Hi,
nice to be with you. You too. So pulling into
this gorgeous property, we see golf, we see tennis, there's
so many amenities here. Talk to me about what we
can expect if we're looking for a home and we

(18:34):
want to come to Whiteface excellent.

Speaker 4 (18:36):
So white Face Club and Resort is a resort community
and we build custom made homes. So when you come,
you'll see other homes that we've built, but we don't
do the resale. If you're looking for an rny existing home,
please talk to all of the wonderful realders in town.
But if you wanted to come and build your own escape,
we have a limited number of lots left and we

(18:59):
would love to welcome people here. So our homes are
very Adirondack inspired, beautiful log work, timber work, and the
lake and you can customize it to every detail that
you love. We have a wonderful team here that will
help you do that. And beyond that, why would you
choose the club to build your home in as opposed

(19:20):
to just one of the lots around town or one
of the places on the lake. When we are the
resort community, so we have all the amenities. So we
sit right on the banks of Lake Placid. We have
beautiful golf lots, beautiful views of Waite Faced Mountain, and
then views of the lake. So to begin, we have

(19:41):
two different restaurants. One of our restaurants is seasonal and
it sits right on the lake. It's a boat house itself,
hovering over the shores of the lake. That's the Moose
Lodge boat House.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
And we're open.

Speaker 4 (19:54):
Seasonally and this is the height of our season now,
so we can't wait for you to go down and
see it.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
I can't wait. And the menu looks great and the scenery,
like you said, is beautiful.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
So it sits on Lake Placid, and the view is
of White Faced Mountain, the most majestic, mighty mountain that
we have here in the air around next and just
love her. And then seated situated underneath the Moose Lodge
is our marina, so we have access to boat slips
for our homeowners. And then our beach. And the reason

(20:25):
the beach and the marina are so important is we're
so valuable to folks who live here, and that Lake
Placid is not an open lake, so it's not easy
to find ways to be able to enjoy the lake
or access the lake. So if you're living here in
the resort, you absolutely can do that as part of
your affiliation with the club. So the Jack Rabbit Trails

(20:46):
cuts right through our property, so you're able to hike
and mountain bike and I'll get to our winter amenities
as soon as I get through our summer. About our
main clubhouse, we have Cafe on the Green, which is
our other, our second restaurant that's open and really helps
accommodate those folks after they play golf on our beautiful

(21:06):
historic when one of the oldest golf courses in the
nation in New York also we are over one hundred
and twenty five years old. It's beautiful in pristine. It's
a short course that's very challenging, narrow fairways and undulating greens.
So we welcome golfers of all backgrounds and of all levels.

(21:27):
But this is a place that you'll come and really
you'll challenge your game and it's an enjoyable view as
well as you look at the mountains all around. We
also have four hard true tennis courts, and we've just
put in red clay pickleball courts and an additional tennis
court there. So our racket center and our tennis club
is up and open and ready for all those who

(21:50):
enjoy tennis or pickleball.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
I love it. And you also have clinics right for
both adults and children.

Speaker 4 (21:55):
We do, as well as leagues for adults and children.
So we love for our We do run them back
to back. They can play golf in the morning and
around lunchtime they head over to the tennis club and
they take a tennis lesson over there, and then we
have the leagues for folks who show up and want
to play a little bit more competitively or meet other
people still playing tennis. And we've just opened our pickleball court,

(22:18):
so we're waiting to see how that catches on and
to see how people would like us to organize around
leagues or lessons as well.

Speaker 1 (22:25):
Sure well, that's definitely the fad right and pickabore fall.
I don't think it's going anywhere.

Speaker 4 (22:30):
Our clay courts are on the newer side of technology,
and the folks who are playing here say that they
really are enjoying the play, that it's very similar to
the hard court, but much easier on their joints, and
so they're really finding the benefit of the red clay court.

Speaker 1 (22:49):
Yeah, that's terrific.

Speaker 4 (22:51):
So in the winter, once we've finished the beautiful summer
season and moved through the fall, where the colors are
just a blaze, you don't get a better view white
face with the colors just vibrating here in the fall,
right along the lake. We move into the winter. It's
the most enchanted place that you could ever be. We

(23:13):
have our golf course turns into a cross country ski track,
and we also have a cross or pardon me, snowshoeing okay,
and then we also put in an ice skating rink
where up by the pro shop, so it's lit at night.
Our ski track will be lit in the evenings on
the weekends with oil lanterns so that you can ski.

(23:36):
Gets dark here a little bit early in the winter,
so we have very long summer days and very short
winter light hours, but we have wonderful, wonderful opportunities to
be outside even when it's dark, both ice skating and skiing.
And then we also have an event space. So if
folks want to have big family reunions or weddings, or

(23:59):
we throw during the winter. We have Crescent Moon parties.
We have bands and cross country skiing and bonfires out
by our lean toos out on the course and the track,
and we have a bonfire that or a fire pit
that's going summer in winter. So somemores are one of
our favorite snacks.

Speaker 1 (24:18):
Here, as are my kids' favorite. That's terrific. Yeah, and
that's a family fun folks can.

Speaker 4 (24:24):
Some of our homeowners live year round. Most of them
visit us.

Speaker 1 (24:28):
I what a great escape, I think, especially the and
we're always looking for a nice relaxing calm. And I
love this area because it seems like it's for those
who are active, who obviously love the outdoors, who love nature,
who love to disconnect to or maybe into spiritual wellness.
It really has everything here.

Speaker 4 (24:43):
It really does. Also in our marina, you're able to
store or rent our kayaks and paddle boards, so we
find homeowners who wake up, take a walk around the property,
head down to the marina, get on their board or
in their kayak, paddle Lake Placid, go home, have breakfast,
head out to our golf course and finish their day

(25:06):
on the tennis.

Speaker 1 (25:06):
Court the home of.

Speaker 4 (25:08):
An iron man. I always say I love a triathlon.
Three activities in a day is always wonderful. There's always
something to do on our property, right.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
It's beautiful. And would you say that the Olympics having
been here, you have these wonderful facilities, and also the lakes,
like you just said, are perfect for all kinds of recreation.

Speaker 4 (25:27):
They're just pristine, absolutely perfect. We have wonderful guides up
here who can take you fishing in our rivers or
our lakes. The ORDA Olympic Sites the Olympic Order is
an acronym for the association that runs off our Olympic
sites here in the state of New York. So you
might hear that while you're up here, the Olympic sites
have just been brought back to world class levels. We

(25:51):
have a world class competition all through the winter on
every one of the at everyone of the sites, and
we have Olympiads who live in town and train in town.
So that makes us a really special and enchanted place
to be.

Speaker 1 (26:06):
Yes. Absolutely, And I feel like any local businesses probably
have to be up to far. I mean, especially if
they're a fitness facility or anything like that. You know,
they can't mess around, no, no, no, their clientele. And
one of the beautiful things about buying a home here
is you also have privileges at Mirror Lake.

Speaker 4 (26:24):
In Yes, Mirror Lake is our sister company, and as
a benefit to being a homeowner here, you can access
their outdoor pool in the summer, their fitness center all
year round, access to their restaurants, and their alpine ski
rental and tuning. We just love being a part of
the Merry Lake.

Speaker 1 (26:45):
Yes, I think it's a great compliment. And then also
vice versa being over at Mirror Lake, we can come
over here also to use the facilities.

Speaker 5 (26:53):
Yes.

Speaker 4 (26:54):
So although we're rewsort community, we also have club members,
but we are also open to the public, so the
public is. The only amenity that's not available to the
public is our beach. But other than that, we welcome
the public to come and take a look, eat in
our restaurants, play golf, play tennis, enjoy our kayak facilities,

(27:14):
or cross country skiing and snow showing in the winter.

Speaker 1 (27:16):
Yeah, terrific. So would you say that you have mostly
families mixed?

Speaker 4 (27:20):
It's a mix and we a little bit of everything,
a lot of families, but we also do have not
only folks who travel without children, but also an older
generation as well who have retired up here, so they
had it as their weekend get away and decided at
the end this is where they would hang their hat
and call it home.

Speaker 5 (27:40):
Right.

Speaker 1 (27:41):
Oh so nice. I know, whenever I visit somewhere like
a place like this, I think, why don't we live
out here more in nature? It's so good for the soul,
it's good for the body. I think this is what
life is about.

Speaker 4 (27:52):
In the Attacadex is just breathtating, it really is.

Speaker 1 (27:55):
So what are some local places in the area that
you enjoy going Tell me about some low places in
the area that you really enjoy well.

Speaker 4 (28:02):
I do love the Lake Placid Center for the Arts
and it gives us the opportunity to have live performance,
dance and music. So we always love that. There are
a number of venues, restaurants and the like that have
live music throughout the summer and winter, so there's always
activity happening. Because of the Olympic the Olympic sites, we're

(28:27):
a great place that families come during the winter because
there's a lot of hockey being played up here, so
there are some really excellent places downtown. The Skiing Board
one of my favorite places to visit and make sure
that I have all the best equipment ready to go
for the ski season. There's kind of hams as well.
Both of those really make sure that were suited up

(28:51):
for both cross country and alpine skiing, which is outstanding.
I love being at Whiteface. There's never a time of
the year that I don't love being at the mountain.
I absolutely adore being at Mount van Holmberg, which is
where all of our sliding competitions. You might know that
we were the backup for the Olympics in Italy. They

(29:12):
didn't need us as far as I know yet, but
we have world class facilities. They have a wonderful alpine
coaster in the summer, but being able to go and
watch that class and level of competition is really something.
And then we always have the World Cup at the jumps,
so that is really amazing. They have big rugby and

(29:32):
the cross tournaments here, and the international and national horse
shows are also here, so every kind of high level,
worldwide competition takes place in this beautiful little village.

Speaker 1 (29:47):
It's an amazing place to be. It really is. And
are you a lifelong resident. I am not.

Speaker 4 (29:52):
So we were weekenders, so we're trying to figure out
how to get here. When I had the great opportunity
to be to become the of this organization and we
were able to take our weekend home and make it
be a year round. So I've only been year round
for one year. Okay, And I'll tell you the irony.
We thought winter was the season. It was our season.

(30:13):
We came every weekend in the winter to ski, sure,
and I didn't start skiing until I turned fifty. So
for folks out there who haven't, yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:21):
You're encouraging me because I'm forty eight and I just
took my first ski lesson this past season.

Speaker 4 (30:28):
It was so much fun. I truly enjoy it. And
if you can skate w face, I hear, you can
ski anywhere.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
So I've learned.

Speaker 4 (30:36):
To ski here and love every bit of it. But
being here in the summer, now that we've lived here,
this will be our second summer living here. Oh my goodness,
what it has to offer.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
Wow, Well, that's amazing. That's amazing to hear. I'm so
happy you just told me that fact because I'm singing,
I'm too old, I have too much to break, and
you still bounce.

Speaker 4 (30:57):
I'm starting to think I might not bounce as well
this year as I've been other years. But when you're
fifty to fifty five, you're.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
Still a bounced. Okay, great, awesome. Well, where can we
go for more information? Just to learn more about Whiteface
and if we're interested in learning more about the plot,
still available shilled on.

Speaker 4 (31:14):
So if you go to the Whitefaceclubresort dot com, that's
our website. Certainly always welcome to call us five five
two three five five one. Well, I'm always happy to
talk to you. Just ask for Tracy Brooks.

Speaker 1 (31:28):
You can see the.

Speaker 4 (31:29):
Beautiful craftsman work that our construction company puts into every
one of our houses. We just have a taste of
it up on the website. But certainly, anytime that someone
would like to come for a tour, we're always happy
to bring them through.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
Oh terrific. And I know sometimes people think, oh, building
a house, it's, oh my gosh, it's a huge undertaking.
But how long would you say it takes from the
time that you pick out your land until you're ready
to enjoy your home.

Speaker 4 (31:51):
It's probably a pretty good close to a year by
the time we get all the knicks and Cranny's done.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
But I think a year it goes quickly. Oh my good,
so many opportunities because I think, oh, it'll take too long,
we need to get into this home now, and then
the year's here before you know it.

Speaker 4 (32:06):
Absolutely. The other thing is many of our homeowners do
do short term rentals. You do have the opportunity and
we can talk with our renters. And we have a
few properties here who have offered to people who are
building to be able to enjoy whichever seasons they would
like to a short term mental during their bold.

Speaker 1 (32:23):
Oh that's great, Tracy Brooks, thank you so much for
joining me today on Passport Mommy. Thank you for having
us here. Thank you so much for coming my pleasure.
I'm Michelle Jerson, the Passport Mommy. Coming up next, we
are going to talk with the SPA manager at Mirror
Lake in More coming up in a few you're listening
to Passport Mommy. I'm Michelle Jerson and so I am

(32:43):
thrilled to be here right now with Victoria Dow. She
is the SPA manager at the Mirror Lake Inn. And
I had the pleasure of experiencing float therapy yesterday, which
was so relaxing, And if you have not heard about
it before, you have to listen to this segment because
it's like basically like floating in the dead sea with
tons and tons of salts beneath you, and you just

(33:06):
get to lay there on your back for an hour
and listen to soothing music, have a wonderful sensory experience
with the lights, and you are deprived from any other
things that could keep your mind away from relaxing. So
it's a great way to come and unwind here at
the Spa. Victoria is so nice to speak with you today.

(33:28):
Tell me a little bit about what you offer here
at the Mirror Lake in at the Spa.

Speaker 5 (33:33):
So in addition to float therapy, we also offer salt
room sessions, massages, facials, body treatments as well as a
full service salon so hair nails. Really, a full day
of relaxation is what we offer.

Speaker 1 (33:48):
I know a lot of people come here maybe too
a lobe or to have small family functions or weddings,
so it's great that they could come to the Spa
the whole family and just get ready for all that.

Speaker 6 (33:58):
Yes, absolutely we host a lot of weddings.

Speaker 5 (34:01):
Our sister property, the White Face Club, they have a
lot of weddings there.

Speaker 6 (34:05):
As well as we do small elopements here.

Speaker 5 (34:07):
So it's really great to kind of have a full
circle moment with both properties.

Speaker 1 (34:13):
Absolutely, And so okay, let's talk about float therapy and
the salt therapy.

Speaker 5 (34:19):
Yes, So it's really nice in today's world to really disconnect.
No phones, no computers, no one can read you, which
is really really nice. A lot of our guests are
kind of looking for that disconnect and for sixty minutes
or ninety minutes if you wish you can completely disconnect.

Speaker 6 (34:39):
It takes about thirty to forty five.

Speaker 5 (34:41):
Minutes to really really get into that complete calmness where
you really just shut off your mind and you go
somewhere else with the chakra music that we have playing,
the lights that.

Speaker 6 (34:52):
Change it really is. It's something special.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
The first time I had done it, I thought, oh
my gosh, how am I going to just flow here
for sixteen minutes? But I think that's key if you
let your mind slowly relax and just slowly let yourself
get into it. I actually dozed off a little bit,
which somebody said to me, aren't you afraid to doze off?

Speaker 6 (35:13):
And I'm like, but why I'm floating? I'm not going
anywhere exactly.

Speaker 5 (35:17):
And that's the magic of it is you don't have
to worry about anything while you're in there.

Speaker 6 (35:21):
You can really completely relax.

Speaker 5 (35:24):
And that is one of the most common questions we
do get is aren't.

Speaker 6 (35:28):
I going to drown? Not at all all. And the
float pod, a lot of people think it's it's claustrophobic.

Speaker 5 (35:36):
But if you can get here by a car, you
can float right exactly.

Speaker 6 (35:41):
That's what that was my initial thought too. I was like, oh,
how small is it?

Speaker 1 (35:44):
But it's really not that small. When you put yourself
in it, you have plenty of room for your body
to drift all around. And I like too that if
you really wanted to, you could lift it up in
the middle, take a break, go back in.

Speaker 6 (35:54):
I didn't.

Speaker 1 (35:55):
I didn't want to. As much as I thought about
it at the beginning, that quickly went away. And so
talk to me about the other types of therapies that
you offer here in the other services.

Speaker 5 (36:04):
So our salt room is wonderful. It really acts like
a toothbrush for your respiratory system. If you know myself,
I suffer from allergies and sinus issues, and that's that
is just wonderful. To sit in there for forty five minutes,
I feel like I can breathe.

Speaker 6 (36:21):
All the way down. It clears out my sinuses. It's
just it's wonderful. Our massages are just top notch.

Speaker 5 (36:28):
I might be biased, you know, I've been to other
spas and it's really you know, our therapists care about
you and what your needs are. And you know, if
oh my neck from the car ride, you know, they'll they'll.

Speaker 6 (36:43):
Focus on that.

Speaker 5 (36:44):
It's not just a massage, it's really how can we
help you. And our facials they are so great. Our
estheticians are just so passionate about what they do as well.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
You know, it's funny you said that about the massage therapy,
because I feel like a lot of times you go
and you can go and you can get a massage
that just feels good, which is great. But I think
a lot of people when they are seeking out massage,
it is to work on a certain body part that's
bothering them. So I think that is key that just
because you're out at a spa at a hotel, it
doesn't mean you can't get a targeted, customized massage.

Speaker 6 (37:15):
Yes, absolutely, I couldn't agree more.

Speaker 1 (37:17):
If we wanted to book a treatment when we're we
know we're coming to Mirror Lake Lodge, how do we
book it? Should we book it ahead of time?

Speaker 6 (37:25):
Definitely? I would call at least three weeks ahead of time.
The earlier the better.

Speaker 5 (37:29):
We do book up very very fast, and you just
call our front desk.

Speaker 6 (37:34):
Our friendly representatives will help you book.

Speaker 5 (37:37):
They'll explain the sanctuaries which you get access to when
you book a float session, salt room session, massage, body
treatment or facial in there. They are gender separated. There
is a euclyptus steam room as well as a whirlpool.
You'll get a locker with Robin slippers. There's a great
relaxation area as well.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
Victoria Dald, thank you so much for having us here.
It was lovely to experience the spa, so thank you
for that and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Thank you. Michelle, my pleasure. I'm Michelle dress in the
passport mommy. Thanks for listening. Have a wonderful week.
