(00:07):
Hello friends, sick editing Jade hereforgive my sultry sound, and I apologize
for our finale episode coming out sovery late. I got sick as a
dog for the first time literally inyears, at the worst possible time,
and I'm so so sorry. Believeme, no one is more frustrated by
(00:30):
this than I. So at thetime of recording the episode, we knew.
We knew the podcast was going tobe long. You know, it's
the finale, but we had noidea that we were going to break a
record here at Podcastica for the longestattempted upload ever. Shocking no one.
It's It's Jade's podcast, clocking inat a whopping five hours and twenty two
(00:54):
minutes. We've exceeded the megabyte limitfor file uploads on the platform form that
we use, which explains why Iwoke up today with literally no voice.
So you're welcome, people who hateour long podcast episodes, This one's for
you. Oh, I hope youenjoy the hilarious diatribe we go into on
(01:15):
on how you can basically go suckit if you hate our long episodes.
I'm not cutting that out because it'sit's now very funny since not only some
listeners are telling us to stop it, you know with the long episodes,
but the platform we use is alsotelling us to stop it. So we
have no choice but to give youtwo episodes this week. So pop the
(01:37):
champagne on this momentous occasion. Iassume my award is coming in the Malannie
day now, And in light ofthis special occasion, I've got a little
acceptance speech for you guys. Igot a little something to say. And
also for guys believe us or not, this is This is still not all
of the feedback. The rest ofour feedback on Facebook and Instagram we will
(02:00):
have, along with a stray emailor two that came in late. We
will have all of that included onour next episode when we interview Matilda Desidigious.
So if you still have not leftus feedback and would like to do
so, just check out the shownotes for all the links to all the
places that you can do that. And we got a lot of voice messages

ever thought about leaving us a voicemessage, but you know, for whatever
reason, decided against it, maybereconsider after you hear from the listeners in
this episode, I think that youcan see why voice messages are just so
special and precious to us. Ifeel like we didn't say it enough in
(02:45):
this episode when we recorded, becausewe were so deliriously tired in our sixth
podcasting hour. But I just wantto say, for myself and for my
girls, I know I speak forKara and Erica when I say, once
again, thank you, just thankyou, thank you, Thank you from

just it just means so much tous. You know, we love doing
this podcast for many selfish reasons, but the biggest reason is the interaction with
(03:28):
the audience. You know, wejust feel so privileged that you guys take
the time to listen to our crazy, lengthy ramblings about how much we love
the marvelous missus masl. I mean, the show is really special, and
I knew this show was really special. That's why I wanted to podcast about
it. But I don't think anyof us, certainly I didn't have any
(03:51):
idea how much the audience engagement wouldaffect me. It just it truly feels
like a community and a family, especially on the Facebook groups that were a
part of. And I would justreally like to especially give a shout out
to the listeners from and the hostsof the Facebook groups were part of of
(04:13):
course podcast like a Facebook group. You guys have been there since you guys,
some of you have been there withme since I started the podcast of
Dead to Me and through with MurderMagnets covering poker Face, but you've stuck
around for Missus Mazel and I thankyou, and especially the Facebook groups like
the Gaslight Cafe Facebook group, theunofficial Marvelous Missus Mazel group and all Things

you guys for for a long longtime, and I'm just so grateful.
I'm just so grateful and humbled. So I'm just so appreciative. Just thank

this girl in my pocketing beautiful andwhen living together and having a momas.
Okay, so we're going to startwith our emails, and our first email
is from Julia cost and Julia CostI believe this is Ja Cost who left
(06:10):
us a lovely five star review.Thank you so much, Julia. Yay,
Okay, Erica, you want totake that one? Sure? Hi,
Jade, Erica and Kara, Ilove listening to your podcasts and it
is it has greatly enhanced my appreciationfor so many details in the show.
I wanted to comment on one momentin episode seven that felt incredibly heavy to
me, and I had to watchit again and again. It was the
(06:33):
moment when Hetty asked Susie, isit more than that? And Susie did
not respond. She took a breathbut didn't shoot back an answer, which
is so uncharacteristic given her rapid fireresponses that we have seen throughout the whole
show. That breath non answer feltso leaning with meaning to me. I
have long since set Susie is deeplyand subconsciously in love with Midge and can't
(06:58):
even admit it to herself, butall of her actions add up to it,
spending her whole life serving her aboveall else. She picked the right
person to love because she gets tobe the partner to such a powerful woman,
but it is totally platonic and therelationship will always be safe. This
level of intimacy is perfect for herbecause she has been hurt, has been
so hurt by whatever happened with Hettythat she never wants to put herself in
(07:21):
a vulnerable position again. Hetty calledher out with that question felt electrifying,
like she could see right through thewalls Susie has built for herself which no
one else can see through. Hettycan see through it because she's been on
the inside of that wall with SusieAne, even all these years later,
she knows her better than anyone andcan tear her down to speechless vulnerability in
(07:43):
a five word question. Yes,yeah, yes, please do take us
through all the other seasons. Ican't wait to rewatch and listen to your
commentary unpacking this masterpiece through every episode. Thanks for all you do. Thank
you so much. Julia. Oh, Julia, that was excellent. And
then she hasn't She has another email. Juliet emails again and says, hi
(08:03):
again, By the way, Iwant to share this Mazel story with you
because you would appreciate it. Ivisited NYC in August of twenty nineteen and
went to Moon Fabrics, where Ibought a few yards of fabric. I'm
a textile designer, and it wasinspiring. I bet. A few months
later, in December twenty nineteen, while watching the Miami season of Missus Mazel
(08:26):
that was just being released, Irecognized one of the fabrics I had bought.
Midge was wearing it on the beachin the sunburned scene. Of course,
I had to sew a little romperto match hers. I only had
one yard of fabrics, so myversion ended up being much more mini than
hers. It was so much funto have that connection with the show through
fabric. I have attached picks ofmy romper and a screenshot of Midge in
(08:50):
her outfit. That is such afreaking cute romper dude, Anne halred hat
amazing, adorable. Seriously, Iwould love to put these photos on Instagram.
I'm going to ask Julia if wecan do that, because you guys
can see, yeah, she's verytalented. Thank you so much, Julia,
and keep making amazing outfits like thisand show me because I think it's
(09:15):
oh, it's quite appropriate that therewas a connection through fashion for this show.
Yeah right, So okay, nowwe have a voice message. We
got so many voice messages, guys. I was so happy about this from
more than just Melanie Brown. Ohmy gosh. I was like, yes,
finally you guys waited long enough, didn't you. But we got some
(09:37):
voice messages. So this first oneis from McKenzie. Hi, ladies,
I'm McKenzie. Love the pod.I'm sending this in right after I listened
to the Tuesday episodes, so forall I know the finale errors and I'm
completely proved wrong. But am Ithe only one that thinks don't note to
(09:58):
herself means don't get married, don'thave kids. This might be a little
bit of a long walk to mypoint, but please walk with me.
But I mean, the show openson Midge giving that speech on her wedding
day. She's on the top ofthe mountain, like that day that every
little girl dreams of. And that'swhole speech that's like a lifetime achieve been
a word speech like she's going throughbasically the whole process of her hopping on
(10:22):
this conveyor belt at five or sixand then tick tick tick all of these
boxes and here she is. Thisis her lifetime achievement. She's done the
thing that you're supposed to do.And I gotta assume that Midge and Joel
got married the winter after they graduated, so like right before graduation, a
few months before her wedding. Iwonder if like something deep inside Midge was
(10:46):
just like, you're not done. This isn't you haven't achieved all that you
were meant to achieve. Don't justsettle on this, because if you think
about, you know, the glimpsesthat we got of Joel and Midge's marriage.
She was on autopilot, you know, she's I mean, she's retired,
she's achieved, she doesn't need todo anything else, but she's bored.
(11:07):
She's kind of going through the motionsperforming this perfect wife. She's bored
Joel's board and it takes Joel's affairto really shake her into reality and show
to her that yeah, this lifeisn't fulfilling you, and you are capable
of doing so much more. Andshe went out and she just took up
by the balls exactly what we wereselding that, like Jeels saw that quality
(11:28):
in her and was finally saw hertalent and was like in awe of her
and decided to essentially like dedicate hisentire life to supporting her. And it
wasn't until then that their dynamic wasgood. Like, they probably never should
have gotten married so young. Ithink this whole season is showing that they
definitely should not have had kids.And I don't know, I guess what's
really driving me to think about thisis that I've always thought of like Doel
(11:52):
and Joel and Midge to be astand in for Amy Sherman Palladino and Dan
Palladino. Obviously the those two arevery open about wanting to be child free.
But I think it's you know, more than that. That kind of
applies like Amy and Dan both gottogether and set out to be writers,
and Amy saw a lot more success, and I can only assume that Daniel
(12:15):
was you know, jealous at first, but I mean, you look at
them now. He's kind of settledinto being second fiddle and supporting her visions.
But he's obviously got such deep reverenceand respect for her and is an
awe of her. And she's definitelylike that bubbly, effervescent, you know,
charismatic dynamo that is the vision. And then he's kind of they're supporting
(12:37):
her, and I'm just wondering ifthis is just their you know, five
season long, very expensive Amazon funded, imaginative think piece of maybe with their
marriage and their relationship could have beenlike if they fell in love and got
together when they were in the fiftiesand stuff when they did, so I
don't could be totally wrong. Thankyou, guys. I love that.
(13:01):
Thank you so much. Oh Wowzie, Mackenzie, thank you, thank you
so much. Mackenzie. That's allI mean, we totally agree on so
much of what you said. Butyeah, I think that you're onto something
about Amy Sherman Palace. We'll goon a walk with you anytime, Yes,
any time. Okay. This nextone is from Amy Krause, She
(13:24):
says, I hope you find mymessage interest interesting enough to play despite its
length. I had a list oftopics to mention, and I tried to
speak quickly PS to my voice message. Oh I knew something. I was
going to forget something in this message. Please add that I adored the Lenny
Bruce scenes. I found them sopowerful, especially the one after his Carnegie
Hall show when he really gives itto her, but also the one when
(13:45):
they finally succumbed to their attraction toeach other. I could watch those scenes
over and over. Oh so couldwe? Amy all right to use her
voice message, Hello, Jade,Kia and Erica. My name is Amy,
huge missus maisal Fan, and Iactually have a cold right now,
So I sound funny, but Ican assure you it's not from walking around
(14:07):
in a blizzard without my hat on. I even meaning to message you guys
all season. I've enjoyed your podcastso much, and I do talk back
to you guys. Sometimes it's like, yeah, I agree with you,
and sometimes it's like no, no, no, you guys have all wrong
of the show when it needs tobe when it needs to be sad.
(14:28):
And I also love that you gush, because you know, it's fun to
listen to. All Right, SoI've been through a bunch of things that
I've been thinking about all season, and just bear with me. I'll try
to speak as clearly, concisely, and quickly as possible. All Right,
Joel, You guys are down onJoel, though you're kind of coming over
to his side. I just wantto say that from the beginning, well,
(14:50):
from the beginning of the show,Midge demonstrated that she wasn't entirely honest
with him. You know, she'dget up and she'd do her makeup,
get her hair done and all ofthat, and then jump back about as
if she woke up that way.And that's really not the honest way to
work within a relationship. So Iwould say, um, not that that
(15:11):
justifies him having the affair, notby any means, but they both,
you know, could have connected alittle bit better, Okay, esther you
um. She mentions in that firstepisode about her relationship with her papa,
I think is how she or GrandpaI can't remember remember how she refers to
him, and in You Three,as well as like every other place I
(15:33):
read, always assumed it was Abeshe was talking about, but you know,
it could have been the other Grandpa. Right of course, now than
we are where we are in theseason, it does definitely point to Abe
being the one that she is closestto. But Moist was a possibility,
and no one even considered that.Maybe. I'm sorry. I know you
guys love him. I have foundhim so annoying this season. His speech
(15:58):
and the other the other day withhis guy friends, it was it was
so wonderful. I loved hearing it, but it was such a one eighty
I had it kind of a hardtime buying it. I wish we would
have seen this character development earlier. And he also says he did nothing to
support Midge over the years, butI would disagree because he and Rose took
(16:19):
on a large share of watching thechildren. I agree. Let's face it,
Mitch could not have gotten all thoselate night gigs without someone being home
with the kids. And also Mitchwouldn't be the comedian she is if she
had been likely, if she hadbeen supported by him, she would have
turned out to be a different person. Not being supported as she grew up
(16:41):
by him. I think that gaveher the edge she needed. Yeah,
I agree. Yeah, Okay, sorry about that, I hit a meeting
work, Okay, So yeah. Also, you guys have said that Midge
kind of gets away with everything andshe never gets how did you guys word
(17:03):
it? She never basically has topay for her bad behavior and how and
everything else. But I would Iwould disagree with you, because she's paying
for it, as we see inthe flash forwards with her crappy relationship with
her kids, speaking specifically of whenshe's in the church and she's sitting next
to Hava with her granddaughter and Havadoesn't even want her to touch the baby,
(17:26):
and obviously esther has an issue withher. So I would say she's
actually paid a very very big pricefor behaving the way she has and being
so self centered. Okay, let'stalk about Dinah just for a second.
We need a series. We needthe Paladinos to create a series about Dinah.
We took it a little bit ofSusie here and there, and they
could really I think her. Ithink her story would be fascinating about how
(17:52):
this black woman in the sixties gotthis position and just grew it and how
tenacious she was. And so Iwas thinking about titles and going with alliteration.
I think we could go with theindispensable Dinah, there is a little
bit of at aeration there, orI love it. Oh, shoot,
there was another one I thought of. Anyway, it doesn't matter Zelda.
Let's talk about that book she puttogether. And U three did not like
(18:15):
how that whole thing played out, that they were acting like they didn't know
anything about the book, and Iagree it was kind of annoying, a
little extra zany, but I wouldsay that they were all acting like that
book didn't exist, because if theydid acknowledge it, that means they would
have to accept that Zelda's leaving. So they're all in denial and they're trying
(18:38):
to act like she's not leaving, and ignoring the book helps them with that
little little thing. Hattie, shesaid, you owe me to Gordon,
and I also got the idea thatI didn't have anything to do with Princess
Margaret. I feel like it goeseven prior to his to Midge coming into
(19:00):
their lives. I think it hassomething to do with their relationship and why
they're together. I think that Gordonmaybe a bit of a beard for Hettie.
I cannot figure out what Gordon hasdone though that Hettie can help him
with. Maybe it helps hide hisplayboy image to be married, so it
(19:23):
gives him this layer of respectability. But I just feel like she's done him
a major salad in the past, and that's why she said to om.
As far as you know, goingnow to what she said to Susie about
if Susie liked Midge or was inlove with her, I think I agree
with what you said. Yes,there are soulmates. They love each other.
(19:45):
But I have watched them because Iwas kind of wondering if she was
attracted to her as well, ifSusie was attracted to Midge. You never
see any sort of longing looks fromSusie to Midge, like when Midge walks
away, So I really don't Ithink there's anything there. Um greed Man,
thank you so much for recommending watchingepisode one, Season one, episode
(20:07):
one again. I'm totally going todo that before the finale. The flashbacks
and flash fours I think they've worked, for the most part pretty well.
I know that it takes up alot of our precious time, but I
think it's been It's really helped advancethe storyline in ways that otherwise otherwise would
(20:29):
have taken many episodes to do.However, my favorite was the one from
how many episodes ago, when theydo the Testero Steale tesseroneal with Susie.
I thought it was a fantastic wayof getting a lot of information in a
short period of time. I amtired of them, though, wasting time
with some things that just don't matter. And I'm sorry. The Danny Stevens
(20:55):
thing was just a bumber. Whywatching it? We didn't clock in it
like five minutes the Little Black andWhite Danny Stephens show. I found it
pointless and I got very angry.Okay, I didn't get angry. I
just fumed that they took so muchtime out of what little time we had
(21:15):
left and played it. And Iknow I can't remember who said it in
the most recent episode that you know, having gone back and watched the last
episode and then this episode, theygot it. They understood the holes that
he didn't, and I don't know. I'm just not sure the Paladinos really
handed in them to plan stuff backwardsin that way. I could be wrong.
(21:37):
I often am wrong. I justthought, I know there must be
a boy, and I'm having init. I just still can't figure out.
Okay, I'm almost there, guys, Um, I guess I know
I've forgotten things and it's gonna bugme when I get done with Wait.
Hold, I just have to sayreal quick because I know I'll forget to
say it just at yi. Peoplelike the Paladinos are insane planning their storylines
(22:00):
like it is next level day one. They knew that Midge's big break was
going to be like getting on thecouch of the equivalent of the Johnny Carson
Show, like they plan. Yeah, they're just like I know that there's
just like evidence to back that up. You know, that's I think their
choice. Yeah, I would neversay someone's wrong, like, but because
(22:21):
it's not like going to there's likeit's more than saying an opinion, is
you know you know what I mean? I think that they just made certain
choices by using flashboards to kind ofhelp build the story in this weird kind
of flow, and a lot ofit worked, and some of it was
frustrating, but then after seeing itall, I appreciate it more. They
did say in an article just RealQuick that they played around with the idea
(22:44):
of these types of flash forwards allthe way back in season two. Yeah,
so they've been thinking about it sinceway back when, So I'm sure
some of that service anyway, Yeah, and sendless and I'm gonna say,
oh my god, I totally forgotto bring that up. But my last
thing is I think the Paladino's overallare just amazing. I think we can
(23:06):
all agree on that. When theyget it right, they get it so
right. But I will say someof my beefs with some of the character's
development or lack thereof, some ofthe people popping in for no good reason
and then leaving, and just someof the time wasting scenes they've had this
last season. When they get itwrong, it just feels so disappointing because
(23:30):
you expect this amazing show to beamazing all the time, and I guess
I'm just asking a little bit toomuch for them. Anyway, thank you
for letting me air my thoughts, and I can't wait for this last episode
and to listen to your take onit. Have a great day, ladies.
(23:51):
Thank you, Amy. It's AmyDay. That was amazing. That
was amazing. There was like Iwant to I wish we had more time
to just respond to every single thing. But I think that you're onto something.
A lot of the a lot alot of what you said is like
she's got a great theory mind. You know, the one thing, the
(24:14):
one thing I will say, youknow, talking about Midge and how we
have talked about her kind of selfcenteredness and how she seems to avoid really
serious consequences for her actions, andyou mentioned her bad relationship with her children
being a pretty big consequence. Andhonestly, I don't know how much she
(24:37):
cares. I know she's human andshe cares somewhat. But I think she
is perfectly content with how her lifeand her relationships ended up. Honestly,
Yeah, I think so too.Yeah, I think that there was something
too, There was something to oneit happened with her and Ethan. She
(25:02):
did look upsess, Yes, whenwhen she realized how Ethan seems you know,
yeah, how Ethan sees her,she had a moment of It was
only after I went back and watchedit again that I saw like, no,
she does get it. She does. She is in reality, because
we were saying in that and whenwe podcast it on it like, I'm
kind of worried if Midge is awareof how much Ethan is not. Okay,
(25:25):
Yeah, she knows, and Ithink it does hurt a little,
you know. Yeah, I thinkthat that relationship, like the way her
relationship ended up with her children,is less of a consequence of her selfish
and kind of bad behavior that wehad discussed, and more of a commentary
on the inability to have it all, especially as a woman back in you
(25:49):
know, the nineteen fifties and thenineteen sixties and even today, like if
you go all in in your career, then your family life will inevitably take
a couple of hits and you justcan't give one hundred percent everywhere. So
I saw it more as a youknow, a take on that issue,
(26:10):
as opposed to Midge facing any sortof negative consequences. Yeah. Same,
So okay, Amy, Then hesaid us another voice message after she watched
the finale. So here, Oh, I was gonna ask k what did
she going to say about the finale? Well, now you will know,
Erica, I know. Hello, ladies. This is Amy, and I
(26:33):
did send it a long recording lastweek, but I had to do another
one. This one will be muchshorter because I watched the finale last night,
and oh my god, I lovedit. I've been reading online a
lot of people's opinions, and youknow, there's always those people who are
not going to be happy with theway a series wraps up because they want
(26:53):
to know more about, you know, certain threads that happened throughout, and
I totally get that, but Idon't know. I think the Paladinos got
it. I smiled so much, especially near the end when Midge was doing
her final stand up, and Iloved that they were all there. It
(27:15):
finally rose an Abe and surely we'rereally seeing how talented she was. I
loved Joel and his support of her, and Susie of course, my god,
the scenes was Susie. I justI couldn't have asked for anything more.
(27:37):
I'm so glad they brought Lenny back. It was very, very sad
seeing him in the state what wasit, nineteen sixty five, I think
the state that he was in.I do wish that Mitch had seen him
one last time, but I getit, and I'm very glad that they
actually did that flashback to the Chinesedinner they had after they hooked up and
(28:00):
we got to see Lenny. Thatwas like our final look at Lenny was
when he was still in his prime. Um. I adored that scene.
Yes, and the well I won'tskip to the end quite yep. I
thought they did a really good jobof helping you understand the lifelong love that
Joel image we're going to have foreach other. And oh my god,
(28:25):
when she did the stand up andthen everybody was applauding, and then they
showed the writers and they curtsied.Yes, it was fantastic, But also
the writers, I wish they wouldhave been able to do more with them,
because when she's running around the officein her undergarments, which I couldn't
believe she did that, she looksup that the writers are looking at her
through the window and then they turnedaround like their embarrassed. But the one
(28:48):
guy just like stays stairs at her. Um. That was that was hilarious
as well. And then during theshow, when she's still sitting on the
stool and Gordon's being as a completejerk and calling her our resident lady writer,
and then he turned they turned thecamera onto the other writers and they
looked so awkward because they had noidea they were going to be on TV.
(29:11):
I mean, that just was Itjust made me laugh. So then
the ending, you know, theflash forward to two thousand and five.
I would have loved to see maybeJoel in that. But it's no surprise.
She ended up alone right in thisgorgeous, huge apartment, and she
wants to work every day because she'sshe's trying to fill her life with um,
(29:37):
with something, because she doesn't havethe family around her. I didn't
love the way they aged her.You guys talked about that in a previous
episode. How you know, it'soften distracting the way they age characters,
But my god, have they nailedit with Susie aged her. I loved
her look. I totally bought it. And the fact that she upgraded from
(30:00):
gins in the window to these whatI imagine are extremely expensive exotic birds who
are just squawking constantly in the backgroundcracked me up. It reminded me what
I thought about it later, ofher running into the office and yelling at
Mike and how she kept squawking Mike, Mike. It just it all tied
(30:21):
for me. I love that theyget together. You know, Mitch has
is gorgeous, huge apartment that's perfectlyfurnished, and then she's got that one
room she sits and probably spends seventyfive percent of her at home time,
and and she and Susie get onthe phone and watch Jeopardy together, and
I'm like, yep, I getthis anyway. So I just wanted to
add my ten cents and say thatBilly was very, very happy with the
(30:48):
ending. I think that I hopethe Paladinos don't do what they did with
the Gilmore Girls and try to,you know, ten years later, do
another four episodes. I think thatthey should just leave it as it is.
And you know, honestly, yes, we don't know a lot about
what happens in all the people inand her images life, but that's like
(31:11):
this real life, right. Wemeet someone, we like them, we
know a little bit about their family, but there's so much left unknown,
and it's like we've just hit thiswindow into her world and we have to
accept that we're not going to knoweverything. Just you know, take what
you can get. So thank you, ladies, I'm totally going to miss
(31:33):
your podcast, but I will bedoing the rewatch with you whenever you get
that together. So please do therewatch and have a lovely and marvelous day.
Oh that was incredible. I'm sorry, not Lisa. Amy. God
looking at Lisa's name and I'm sayingsorry, Amy. Amazing. Thank you
(31:56):
for your dedication. Thank you.I wish I could comment on everything.
You know. Yeah, our nextemail is from Lisa. Is it Hilton
Costa? So I find the lengthof your episodes and the chatty meandering absolutely
delightful. Thank you, Lisa.Oh goodness, I would definitely keep listening
(32:19):
for a rewatch. Please do arewatch of Mazel Okay, guys, Okay,
we hear you. We'll do it. We'll do it. Abe's speech
about Midge and the penultimate episode isso very touching. I love it more
than I have words to describe. And I know you don't know me,
but that's really significant because I fuckingalways have words. I like you already,
(32:40):
Lisa. I knows you're among friendshere. Yeah. Really, way
too many words for most people,I'm sure, but I feel certain that
you fantastic females would get me ifwe got to spend time together. Yes,
I had totally spaced on the emergencyphone call at the end of the
episode and was really not sure whatit will be. Oh not was,
(33:04):
and I'm really not sure what itwill be. But I think nobody died
it would overly influence the finale. For short, I can talk Shirley and
moist to die. I still feellike she ended up writing for the Hankazaria
sitcom or why else would it figureso heavily in one of the very last
episodes. Yeah, it's yeah,it's just the Palladino's doing Palladino things.
(33:30):
Yeah, I want to do,she said. I really love genius Esther
Ethan's wife is frightening. Love youand love these podcasts. I will almost
certainly go back and start over onthe podcast because they're just charming. Lisa
(33:51):
in Lower Alabama, Lisa in LAlike that, My goodness, Lisa,
thank you? Love that all right. So the next emails from Sabrina Mike
in Hi, ladies, I havethoroughly enjoyed your podcasts, especially for this
final season, as I could notfind many discussing the episode so soon after
they aired. I love the lengthand each part of the of each episode.
(34:14):
Thank you. I love the readingsof scenes and quotes yeay Jade who.
I love the insights from each ofyou due to your areas of expertise
law and piracy, actress and acting, motherhood and thriving in life and more.
No friends are watching the series.I love how it's law and piracy
that is Kara's area of excusing.I'm gonna put that on my business cards
(34:37):
now. Yep, qualified awesome. No friends are watching the series right now
due to my excitement, they happenon viewing. However, listening to you
all, I am often nodding myhead, laughing, reflecting, and more
from all the discussion, I feellike we're sitting gushing and conversation about each
episode. I must repeat, Ilove every minut of your podcast caps good.
(35:05):
See, this is what I'm saying. Like we get more love for
the Yes, we love the length, we love the meandering, we love
the feedback, like we get moreof that than we do negative. So
people who are negative on our meandering, people who are negative on our feedback,
I'm sorry, but you're just you'reoutvoted, is all it is.
As there are three other series I'mwatching when listening to podcasts, I'm disappointed
(35:27):
that Moore is not covered per episode. I could tell you there could be
more said. There may be moreto say, but so much is edited
out so they can be an houror shorter. I have not watched any
of the previous series by the Palladidas, so again, your understandings regarding The
Gilmark Girls and the series are sohelpful. I agree because I also did
not watch The Gilmark Girls, andI appreciate it. I cried and laughed
(35:49):
in so many episodes of the entireseries. I love that Abe takes notes
or takes note and reflects on hisdaughter's strength and thriving in life. I
think every person should hear this fromtheir parents, gard Dan's families and friends.
So often, when we're in theweeds of hardships, limbo and changes,
it is hard to see the biggerpicture. It helps to take time
for all of us to reflect onwhat cool things we have done, been
(36:12):
involved in, and created, letalone acknowledging the hard work of our lives
and everyone around us. Susie,I adore Alex Borstein since my childhood days
of watching Mad TV. I listenedto a neat interview with her about her
life, which also gave awareness abouther life, her growth as an actor,
balancing being a wife, mother, and working. Especially exciting to see
(36:32):
older actresses getting brilliant roles in somany Streaming Company series in this show,
agreed Midge, she had she hashad me sigh, scream, frown and
laugh seeing her drive and motivation trulyis hard and what it takes and be
it back in those days or nowto get the dream job, career and
more. I have often thought aboutwhat a sociology professor told me when I
(36:57):
was twenty. We cannot have atall career, family, and job.
We generally try, but is closeto impossible. This is a theme I've
seen. This is a theme Isee in the last season, especially with
a four look at the kids ofMidge's career. Although I am not a
mother and her wife, I feelrelief I have time for myself and family
versus the exhaustion of juggling so muchlike tear friends. Oh my god,
(37:19):
that's great. You're only happy asyour unhappiest child is a quote might BFF
told me about fifteen years ago,and that is the truth. The Masal's
fun, silly and just right. We all have memories of mothers and grandmothers
who could do anything, make anything, and always had food on hand.
I still think of my own grandmother'shandmade sandwiches, cakes, and how I
(37:39):
could call and visit and play cards. She always asks, are you hungry?
Happy? Memories? Tears of nanoOh, listen, anytime we think
about Grandma's I'm like tearing up.Think about my grade. The Wiseman's exhausting,
funny and such a mess. Ihave to say out loud as I
write this, but how their characterswork so so well, and I give
(38:02):
them credit for several good scenes, from Rose figuring out the matchmaking Mafia maybe
after her to Abe in his secondcareer at the paper, Kevin Pollock,
Jane Lynch, Brian Tarantina. Alwaysbeen a big fan of each of them,
from The Usual Suspects to Beston's Showto Uncle Buck Yeah I know,
Uncle Bob rob it to the castsaying yes, I adore Jane Lynch and
(38:25):
her character is just perfect as theover actor reactor, and I love her
cadence and how she delivers her lines. I find myself saying some of her
lines and they make me smile orif I said with company present, they
agree and repeat despite not knowing itfrom the show, smiling as I think
of her Luke Kirby, I don'tknow what lines she's saying. I think
(38:49):
I think we need to hear whichones are her favorite. Yeah, Luke
Kirby, my first time seeing him, and he nailed it. He gets
a cool beat fibe across and Midgewaiting until the blue room was just right.
The scene of him undoing her dressand one move was impressive that I'd
hope everyone learns how to be thatsmooth. I think the only scene that
comes to minded that's for this isBud when Kevin costs one handed garter on
(39:14):
Snap. Wow. Yeah that washot. Yeah. This has already been
a long email. That's okay,this is a long podcast. I will
try and leave a voicemail. Ohyeah, but it has been emotional season,
and even typing this, I havehappy tears. I'll be a past
midnight tomorrow to view the final episode. I do not think it is fair
(39:36):
they are not giving us a twohour ending. I cried and held my
breath when Midge said to Susie inGrand sentral station, if you don't do
this, I will always know youcould have done something and didn't paraphrasing,
and then to see Susie went andspoke to Hetty. That is what it
takes, and all of us knowthere have been one or multiple people in
that life that helped us find ourpath. And seeing Susie do it me
(40:00):
tears as her manager and friend.Yes, yes, yes, I repeat,
I love every minute of your podcast. In closing, as a registered
nurse in hospice in oncology, thankyou so much for what you do.
Oh my goodness, the discussion atthe table is one I bear witness so
many times that week a week, aging is tough and is important to pause,
(40:22):
look around, see the little thingsand take a deep breath. Each
day we have as a gift, particularly in good health. Seeing Joe's flashback
to regret was soothing, as somany people don't always reflect on their actions
and always all the repercussions. Thankyou all for this podcast and experience.
You each get around of applause forme each time I listen. Bravo,
(40:42):
Bravo. I am so very proudof each of you and your dedication and
work on this podcast. Fondly,Sabrina Mike and rn. Wow, that's
so nice and there's more, probablyjust for you. I'm going to read
this for you, Sabrine. Iwant you to be paid and paid well
for this work. Well, thatwould be nice about your excitement, entertainment,
(41:06):
editing in sights of more and souplifting and brighten the day, as
I imagine each listener listens. I'vebeen posting on doc at doc World,
Phil, let me read this againat doc World film tagging the show to
get them to see you and saywe want to hire you for the rewatch
all season. Oh thank you.I'm not on Facebook, but if there's
(41:28):
anything I can post or tag, please let me know. Ah, thank
you so much. And listening,oh, she is cheering us on and
listening to dead to me as well. Okay, next she's going to figure
out how to give us a fivestar review on iTunes, as she's never
done that before. All bravo.Thank you Sabrina so much for all that.
Now, when I'm having a badday, Sabrina, I'm just gonna
(41:51):
I'm just gonna email and yeah, yep, you can't see us, but
we are totally smiling right now, chink Raina. Yes, yeah, my
cheeks are really hurting. Oh andI agreed with like everything she said,
especially about Susie and Midge stuff, and yeah, all of it. Yep,
(42:13):
all right. Next, Gregory Torreslove the podcast. I think Hetty
and Gordon have some sort of marriageof convenience. Hetty seems to have a
relationship with Susie, so it couldbe a marriage for appearances, or possibly
Gordon strayed and she stayed. Butit seems as though this is the first
time she has really played that card. Greg Yeah, they so. Oh,
(42:36):
now, I remember what I wantedto someone had said what was they
were speculate? Oh, I thinkit was Amy. She was speculating on
what the favor from Hetty and toGordon was, like why he owes her
and I And people are reading intoit a lot, like saying that they
only have a marriage of convenience andHetty has done something for Gordon. But
(42:57):
I'm pretty sure, I mean,yes, clearly it's a marriag. I'm
pretty sure it's a marriage of conveniencethat Hetty is. Um after this episode,
we're pretty sure that Hetty and women. Yeah. Um, But as
far as the why Gordon owes Hetty, I think It's one of those things
that you know, Amy and Danright, that people want to read far
(43:19):
into and it's like, does doesn'tgo that deep. It's just about Princess
Margaret. I'm pretty sure that's allit was. She she said it was
so I know, well, andthat's what I'm saying though, is that's
why that was. That's one momentof this season that did kind of bug
me a little bit because like, quit that, like, stop trying to
make things sound more like mysterious andinteresting than they really are, and just
(43:44):
to never ever even comment on itagain. It's just weird, you know.
It's like more like you know, right right, no, or or
if it had been one of thosemysterious things that led to oh that's what
it is, then at least justtell us, you know, don't make
(44:04):
us like, don't make us liketry to be like, wait, wasn't
that it feels like a loose endeven though it pass you. Yeah,
no, it's not really a looseend, but it feels like it is
because of the way that it wasplaced, that it was put to us,
you know. Yeah, yeah,I was gonna say if he said
he owed, he owed, sheowed him, we would have tied it
(44:25):
to Susie or the fact that she's, you know, is interested in women,
but other than him being a playboy, womanizer, guy who likes to
you know, play the field, who cares especially in that time. Yea,
so Gregory just he's sent another email. I'm listening to your episode eight
podcast, and I think Susie.I think maybe Susie hurt Hetty. Hetty
(44:49):
seems to not be jealous but happythat Susie has found someone in Midge.
Yeah. On episode eight, Icould see that you felt that maybe both
she could be both. Yeah, she seems quite like the the dreamer,
you know, like she's like thelike I don't want to like optimistic,
(45:12):
she's she's comes from well yeah, and and even like she's like let's just
get to dry realize, like, yeah, the consequences of her actions and
like doesn't come to reality, Likeshe hurts people in her path, like
it's not okay. Yeah unaware,Yeah, oh, Hetty, it's dangerous
(45:32):
to not be aware. It's kindof like living living adult life as a
child, and then that's dangerous.Yeah, I would have as we said,
and then the episode, I reallywould have liked more from Hetty and
just one last time. I wasvery bummed as I was watching this last
episode. I was like, nothingfrom Hetty, nothing, not even not
(45:55):
even that a look we got.Our last look was the look that she
did on the stairs before she wentto Gordon. Right, yeah, oh
god, there was just it's acrime. How way too little we got
Susie and Hetty together, Like youuse Nina Arianda, You have Nina Arianda,
you use her. Yeah, wellwe can't have it all, can
(46:16):
we? All right, next one, Kara, you want to read a
Lisa sent in another email after shewatched Finale and I love this. Her
subject line is finale was perfect. And then she said, oh my god,
oh my god, oh my god, I'm sending this message because when
(46:36):
I saw Imagine, you guys weremy first thought. Thank you, Lisa,
thank you for thinking of her. When I saw Imagine pop up,
Oh, I got so excited justbecause we were like basically told we're not
going to get Imagine, and thento get a little Imagine, I was
fris listen anyway, and it wasworth every little tiny moment of it.
(46:59):
It was so cute. Yep,it's adorable. Office she is indeed,
Okay, this is from Chris Sholstrom. Hello all. First, I just
want to say thank you so muchfor this wonderful podcast. I love to
listen to podcasts along with shows i'mwatching, and you make me feel like
I'm dishing with my friends. Ireally appreciate you all. Thank thank you
(47:21):
so much. I just finished watchingepisode nine, so many thoughts. I
honestly laughed and cried and cheered andjump up and down. I love this
so much. I cried when theytried to save Lenny. I cheered when
Mitch took the mic, and thankgoodness we got to see her whole act.
Yes, yes, yes, Imissed it. Oh. I loved
everyone frantically trying to reach Rose andof course that final scene between Midge and
(47:45):
Susie. This episode was exactly theending I wanted and didn't know how to
ask for. And yeah, that'sreally a good point, Like it really
was something like not to imagine, but it really felt really good at the
end. I feel sad that itis over, but satisfied. I will
definitely go Can we watch it atsome point in the future, so I'll
keep my eyes open to see ifyou get to do that. Rewatch podcast.
(48:05):
Thank you again my friends. ChrisSholstrom, PS, I try to
leave you a review on Apple podcaststhat but it didn't seem to post.
I gave you five stars, ofcourse, thank you. Any ideas if
I need to do something different,we will check, Chris. Yeah,
I'll try to figure that out. That's strange. I have no idea why
that would why that wouldn't post.We annoying. Yeah, sometimes if you
just if you just rate it,it seems to glitch, as opposed to
(48:30):
if you actually write out a review. Yeah, you know what I mean.
Also, reviews never show up rightaway. They usually take a few
days or no, not a fewdays, but they take like at least
twenty four hours. Sorry guys,So listeners, Gail sent us a message,
and she forgot to include her voicemessage, and then she sent us
(48:51):
another one that says call me Penny. Here's my voice message. And I
was like Penny, Penny who,and they're like Penny pan Jade. Okay,
all right, here is Gail's message. Hello marvelous Mazel ladies, this
is Gail Nestle recording. I wantedto share with you what the marvelous missus
(49:14):
Mazel meant to me. I thoughtthe ending was fabulous. By the way,
I don't think we could have askedfor anything better. First of all,
to Matilda jadagis Zelda Chiculia Bartzel Khanna. And that's about all the Polish
I know, except that Polish ranthrough my household, throughout my childhood and
(49:37):
my upbringing, except that my parentsonly spoke it between themselves as the adult
language to keep things from children. But I remember it well, so every
time you spoke it, I cried. And last my parents are both gone
now, and my mother was ourmissus. May I think maybe I'll post
(50:00):
a picture of her with my brotherat his bar Mitza looking looking strange,
liked like Michael Zegan I love anyway, So I just wanted to talk about
the last the last episode back toZelda. I was really concerned about her
(50:21):
relationship with Yanish. I mean,in the end, she called Rose to
say, you know, go tothe studio to watch Midge or missus Miriam
as she called her, do herdo her gig. And and she was
crouching in the bathroom hiding from Yanish. So there's something. There was something
(50:42):
left there that I found a littledisturbing, And I was wondering if that
marriage, you know, was itall happy? He set of control.
Yeah, I thought that that wassort of all open ended question in my
mind. Um, as far asmissus May is concerned, I mean,
the whole show kind of reflected mymy childhood in the way that I grew
(51:07):
up. My father had a garmentfactory, just like wow, there was
there were academics in my family aswell that sort of functioned head over heart,
and so I recognized Abe quite well. There wasn't you know, as
Caroline Aaron said in many an interview, there wasn't one character in the show
(51:31):
that didn't remind me of somebody thatI knew in my own life. And
of course all the Jewish themes ranghome for me coming from a Jewish background.
My favorite parts of the last showwere I think number one, Abe
(51:52):
with Midge. He was just soloving and tender with her, and that
moment where he said something like I'mreally proud of you, like during the
commercial break and he touched her cheek. I just you know that again brought
tears to my eyes. Mitch andSusie were fabulous throughout, and Um and
(52:15):
Mitch and Joel and when when Mitchfinally decided to grab that mike. It
was it was just exhilarating, andI realized, even though I did all
that research on potentially who Hetty wasand what she had over a Gordon Ford,
Um, you know, in theend, if she had been there,
(52:36):
Midge would not have grabbed that Mikeon her own. She would have
been pushed from behind by Hetty, and it was more important for Mitch to
do that by herself. I lovedwhen she blew a kiss to Joel in
the audience. That was amazing.God, so many amazing moments. Um.
The Lenny Bruce you know, finalewith him, I mean, that
(53:00):
was great that she put the fortunethat she kept from Lenny at the restaurant
in her bra before she went onon the Gordon Ford Show. But that
last scene with him, although itwas still or acting by Luke Kirby,
it was heartbreaking. And I'm assumingthat Amy Sherman Palladino ran that by her
(53:23):
family. I know that the Palladinasknow the Bruce family, so I hope
they ran it by them. I'msure they did, because it was just
heartbreaking watching his deterioration, and alsothat Mitch refused to go in to see
him. I think, you know, she was still with him in sixty
(53:44):
one, but by sixty five,I think it was just a survival instinct
on her part that she just couldnot face him in that state, because
what would that say about her ownsurvival in the same of that I could
I could feel her her pain aroundthat decision, at least as I perceived
(54:08):
it um And in the end,you know, like I mean, her
palatial home was was amazing. Itwas clear that it was the same building
that she bought for Rose. MI wanted to say something about Rose.
I you know, I think herher matchmaking business went well in the era
(54:31):
that she started it in sort ofshe started I would say, maybe in
nineteen sixty and it was successful upuntil maybe the you know, maybe for
five or six years. But oncethe sexual revolution hit I think you mentioned
this, it was sort of inevitablethat it would go down, and she
(54:54):
should have read the signs, andMitch could have read the signs for her
to I mean, if she hadlived today, of course, matchmaking services
have made a resurgence, so shewould have been successful again. But I
don't think I think she was probablysuccessful for a few years. UM,
and then you know, she needn'tto make a decision to bow out and
(55:16):
obviously didn't. Anyway, I feellike I'm rambling, so I'm gonna I'm
rambling, so I'm gonna end bysaying it was clear that Midge sacrificed her
motherhood. UM. You know, she didn't have any contact with her kids
by two thousand and five. Itdidn't look like it looked like her ending
(55:37):
with Joel was a good one.He may have passed away by then.
And I love that final scene betweenher and Susie. And I love the
fact that Susie was, you know, had her hair long and living in
Hawaii and wearing a brightly colored movie. Um sort of her life and found
(55:58):
joy though that was obvious to me, and I was really happy about that.
UM. Anyway, I really enjoythe podcast. I hope that you
continue from episode one so that wecan continue this back and forth. I'd
love to participate in one of thoseepisodes if you if you choose, you
(56:21):
know, start again from from thefirst season. Oh. One more point
that I wanted to make. Iwas questioning the choice that um Asp made
about not having moist at the gigat Gordon Ford's show. Um, the
excuse was that his arm was botheringhim, so we decided to not to
(56:42):
come. And I was kind oflooking forward to him recognizing her talent because
he always said she was never funnyand maybe that was another hole. Thank
you, like still somebody in thefamily that was gonna, you know,
hold back approval at It made meremember that, um, that a bought
half that apartment in one of theepisodes in season one. I think in
(57:06):
the hope that Joel and Mitch wouldget back together, and so technically he
owned half the apartment unless he neverended up paying for it. I think
that's an open question. So really, Midge bought half the apartment and that
that was never really addressed. Sobut I'm glad that he came clean about
(57:27):
her owning it. That was thatwas good. Um. Anyway, all
the best to you, ladies, and I'm curious to hear what you have
to say about the last episode andI'll be listening. Take care all bye
bye, Thank you, Gail,Thank you, Gail. I'm going jazz
singing this weekend. That was aMidge inspiration. Yes, they inspired a
(57:51):
lot of people, especially see takecare finally right, she does inspire both
of them do so amazing. Yes, Jazz sing it away, Yes,
I love it awesome. Oh gosh, this is all just so, it's
so good. I love I lovevoice messages. Yes, can't get enough.
(58:12):
There's just so much better than emails, you know. I love hearing
our listeners voices. It's so thrilling. All right, who's next? All
right? So Aaron, Anastasia writesto us, this might be the greatest
series finale I've ever seen in mylife. And Gordon did a really good
job of making me hate him.Luckily he came to his senses. Aban
Rose cry emojis. I had troubleholding back tears. Side note, we
(58:37):
were exactly where Where exactly were Estherand Ethan? Who was watching them?
Maybe they were with Moish? Yeah, I on pain killers, thinking he's
Abron killed it, Midge killed it, Old lady. Makeup needed work,
though, and I thought the Palladinosdid a marvelous job ending this series the
(59:00):
way they did. Sorry, ifthis said, I'm like, I was
all over the place. I'm stillprocessing. Can't wait to see what you
do next, because I'll be listening. Thank you so much, Aaron,
you're perfect, and yeah, Ikind of agree that, Like Susie's makeup
looked so good, but Midge's oldage makeup was a little little rough.
Yeah, I don't know. Idon't know why. It's it sounds really
(59:23):
insulting to say Alex Borstein looks sogood in this old age makeup and she
really she does, and she islook not a natural that old Like,
oh, it's not a common ofmakeup work on her. Yeah, it's
not a comment on like her beingolder or anything like that. It's just
she wears this old age makeup soconvincingly that like I accept it. I
(59:45):
was like shocked that I was lookingat someone in makeup. Actually, you
know, I kept forgetting every timeyou look at Rachel Brosnahan, you're aware
that it's it's makeup. There thereis some article with Rachel Brosnahan and Alex
Borsti, and Alex was talking abouthow she loved her gandolf Wig in the
final episode and they couldn't wait tillthey could post pictures of it, and
(01:00:07):
I was like, now's so funtalking about I could see it so now.
Next is from our friend Marcello andhe emailed us and said, this
is a description the season one, like when the season one aired. I
think it was the description before iteven aired on Amazon. It's it's nineteen
(01:00:30):
fifty eight Manhattan and Miriam Midge Mazelhas everything she's ever wanted, the perfect
husband, kids, and Upper WestSide apartment. But when her life suddenly
takes a turn and Midge must startover, she discovers a previously unknown talent,
one that will take her all theway from the comedy clubs of Greenwich
Village to a spot on Johnny Carson'scouch. And he said, I thought
(01:00:50):
this might come in handy for thefinal episode. WHOA, I can't believe
that that was the description they say. They specifically say to Johnny Carson's couch,
so truly they knew, But yeah, I can't say that. I
can't remember who who the name ofthe person who who was saying that,
um that it probably wasn't planned orsomething like, no, everything is really
planned. I think that's great. That's so cool. They specifically addressed to
(01:01:15):
in an interview like they knew thatthat was going to be her big break,
and they also acknowledged that it wouldhave been Johnny Carson, like it
literally would have been Johnny Carson ifhe was Johnny Carson in nineteen sixty one.
Like he was not the quote unquotekingmaker yet at that point in time.
So we had to deal with GordonFord, who, honestly, like
(01:01:37):
you know what, Super Pop worriesabout Johnny Carson too. So yeah,
that's gonna say. Maybe we didn'tmaybe they didn't want to hate on Johnny
Carson. Yeah, might not bethe most popular choice. Okay. So
so Marcello also left us a voicemessage, Oh oh hi everyone, Marcello.
(01:01:58):
I actually read it on the air, which I found very flattering.
Thank you. I wanted to chimein, you know, share some of
my thoughts on the finale of theseries. I mentioned in my email last
week that I was a little concerned, you know, about sticking the landing,
and I gotta say I actually likedthe ending. I mean, I
(01:02:20):
had a couple of issues. I'llget to that in a second, but
I really like how they resolved themain storyline, and you know, they
included you know, Midge and herrelationship with her parents into it, and
if it all kind of came togetherreally nicely. I kind of expected you
know, the big break to beher being on the show. I was
(01:02:44):
not expecting the thing on the couch, which I know was a thing with
Johnny Carson, but I actually gota little emotional watching it. It was
very very satisfying, and Rachel Brosnahanand Alex Sportstein were both really incredible in
that scene. I mean they're bothincredible actresses. But I was very very
pleased. Um. I also reallylike, you know, the opening scene
(01:03:05):
with with Lenny Bruce, Uh,kind of heartbreaking but very be sitting.
And I also thought a little bitof of a cautionary tale, you know,
where you know showbiz can lead you, and you know that could have
been a pass for Midge who knows. Um now the thing. The two
things that that I was not crazyabout were so the the scene with Lenny
(01:03:28):
Bruce at the Chinese restaurant. Thatfelt very out of place for me.
I mean, I'm not saying thatthey didn't need that at all. I
mean I don't think we needed itthe whole I guess, you know,
the fortune Cookie thing in her braand so kind of Lenny's with her,
you know, when she performed.I get that, but it's like they
(01:03:51):
established the mystery of the numbers inher bra and like, not even ten
minutes later, we're getting the answerto the mystery, and it could kind
of killed like the emotional high ofher triumph and suddenly, you know,
we're in that kind of seemingly pointlessscene with Lenny Bruce at a restaurant.
And that was also kind of myissue with you know, the final scene,
(01:04:12):
you know, with Susie, Imean not just Susie but Mitch in
two thousand and five, and it'sit's kind of an epilogue. I get
that, and it's fun and I'mglad it was there. It was a
little too long to be an epilogue, and I kind of wished that the
show had ended and they had had, you know, the first credit and
then have the epilogue, so itfelt like a real epilogue, not just
(01:04:34):
part of the show. But overall, I was very very happy with them
with the whole thing. And onefinal note, I do think that Susie
may have had a bit of acrush on on Mitche when they had that
first conversation, you know, whereshe actually tells her the whole story with
Hetty and whatever that moment you knowwhen she says, were you ever a
(01:04:58):
blonde? Was like, you know, I don't know. I feel like
maybe she had pictured her somehow orthen you know, I don't know that
that stuff like a hint of acrush. Um. In a way,
I have loved the podcast. It'sbeen great. I really really love the
show. I fully intend to rewatchthe entire thing now, and I would
love for you guys to do afull rewatch of the series. I will
(01:05:20):
definitely be listening. But in away, thank you for you know,
your response, and for the awesomepodcast. You guys are awesome. You're
awesome. Thank guys. Marcello,Marcello, thank you so much. Sorry
I was calling you, Marcello. The only thing I will say is that,
um, I felt the Lenny Bruceending scene was lovely, even just
(01:05:43):
is this is the thing, okay, because we all want Midge and Lenny,
like I don't know anyone who doesn'tlike their are you? I mean
you have to be blind or somethingto not see that these actors have chemistry
and it's just delightful to watch themtogether. But because they can't be in
a relationship, because Lenny is likea out to die and also neither want
to. It just wouldn't work ifthey were in a relationship. Like I
(01:06:04):
don't want them to be in arelationship, but at the same time,
I want to see them together allthe time, you know, Like I
just want them to be around eachother all the time. So because they
had to separate, that they hadto put some kind of an end to
their whole thing. I felt thatscene was necessary for me, just because
(01:06:24):
if if seeing Lenny on stage athis worst was the last we saw of
him, it would have very muchnot been kind. It would have upset
me and it would have been nogood. We had to have it.
Yeah, yeah, it would havechanged the way we felt. I do
agree with what he said though, about how the setup of like the mysterious
(01:06:46):
Chinese fortune numbers in her brawl,Like that was set up and then literally
like five minutes later we got theanswer. Maybe could have been Maybe could
have been nicer if that fortune wasestablished at an earlier episode, Yeah,
giving us more time to wonder aboutit or something. I wonder how he
feels after listening to this podcast.Maybe he might. Yeah, let it
(01:07:09):
stood a little bit. I mean, we want to jump on the Lenny
train. I watched it how manytimes, and I think each time I
liked it more and more. Yeah. Same, yep, But thank you
Marcello for You're awesome just being apart of perfectly marvelous all. Oh gosh,
all of our listeners love you, guys. I do love these voicemails.
Okay, so wonderful. Next upis an email from Deb. She
(01:07:31):
says, Hi, ladies, letme begin with saying how totally obsessed I
am with this show. I don'tthink I have ever felt this way about
any show in my adult life.I am in total denial that it is
over, and I'm hoping beyond hopefor a movie in the future. Yes,
yeah, someone said, I can'tremember who it was. Someone said
that they're hoping that they don't dolike a Year in the Life thing.
(01:07:55):
I'm not ashamed to say that Ikind of hope that they do helping for
a movie, a film. Ithink that'd be fun. I want to
I want to see Carnegie Hall.Yeah yeah, yeah, like that was
one thing. I forgot to bringthat up earlier. That is one thing
that I thought is really disappointed thatwe didn't get to see, at least
(01:08:16):
when they started. I knew andthe lights went down, I thought,
what if they were going to transitioninto the Yeah, but yeah, you
had the same thought. But it'sokay. I think like after kind of
like that deep dive into that scene. It was it was very effective,
but that's what I thought we weredoing. Yeah, it had been cool.
Yeah, okay. She goes onto say there were so many marvelous
(01:08:38):
moments in this episode, but asingle shot that really struck me was when
we see just the microphone from Midge'spoint of view and know what she's about
to do. Gordon was a narcissistica hole, and I'm so glad she
showed him that she was right allalong. Who yep, yep. How
much do I adore Shirley and moist? Shirley is my n spirit. One
(01:09:00):
of my faith scenes in the entireseries was when she was out on the
street yelling to Ethan what his launchchoices were. That wasn't good? All
the soups. Yeah, I thinkI think I've got to turn it to
Shirley. I really do. Ithink that is an excellent, excellent route
to take my plan. So theyabsolutely stuck the landing as the love these
(01:09:24):
two women had for each other wasreally the heart and soul of the series.
I also want to note how muchI loved how they book ended the
series with the song Girls Talk.It was especially meaningful that the first episode
was the most famous version by DaveEdmonds, and the version used in the
finale was by a female duo,Tegan and Sarah. Truly genius. So,
(01:09:45):
guys, I have to confess.I have to confess something. I
didn't read all the emails prior torecording, but I did look at Deb's
and when I saw that, shesaid that Dev is the reason that I
know that fact. It's not becauseI liked I don't know if it was
an articles or something, but it'snot didn't come from my brain. Dev
clearly either she read this in anarticle or she just has like encyclopedic knowledge
(01:10:06):
of this show. Very impressive way. You know what's funny, I didn't.
I don't know who David Edmunds is, but I know Elvis Costello wrote
this song, so of like, okay, oh he wrote the song.
Yeah, I thought it was David, but it was it was released by
the famous one is released by DaveEdmonds. It's kind of like the Hoople
(01:10:28):
is a David you know all theyoung dudes. It's a David Bowie song,
but my is the one that becamethe big hit, right, she
said, I would be remiss ifI didn't also bow down to the genius
of Donna Sakowska. Midge's gray dressand hat trimmed in fustia with matching bag
and shoes and roses, matching dress, hat whiting very true had me ooing
(01:10:51):
and owing so much my husband hadto tell me, okay, enough already,
no, you keep going, dee. I loved everything about it except
the color. I don't Maybe it'sjust because I don't love Rachel brosenhand in
gray and they keep putting her ingray. I don't know. I feel
like a lot of gray and shelooks great and everything. Don't get me
(01:11:11):
wrong, but like, yeah, gray is her least good color if she
had to have one, you know, And I was just I was looking
at that outfit, loving it,wanting it to be that blue color that
she looks so good at. Iwas bummed about that. Rachel Brosnahand said
that her favorite costume, like herfavorite outfit of the entire series, was
this gray dress that she was wearingwhen she was working at Bealtman, and
(01:11:36):
I remember looking at it. Iwas like, you look lovely, but
really like, why this one?God, maybe she's maybe she's the one
saying like, yeah, yeah, maybe maybe. Alright. Dev also says
please ask Matilda if she was ableto take home anything from the set and
what it was, and also whatwe'll do a favorite scene. I love
(01:11:58):
those questions. Thank you for yourmarvelous podcast. I'm not a podcast kind
of person, but the fact thatyours is the only one I take time
to listen to speaks volume. Ohmy god, Wow, Debbie, that
is amazing. Wishing you all nothingbut marvelousness, Debbie, Debbie, Debbie,
I love you girl. Thank youso much. That was delightful.
(01:12:23):
It was, oh man, allof these, all these things so awesome.
All right. Next we have fromThomas Smith. Hi, I just
watched it. I saved it untilI can watch it in real comfort.
Midget Susie having a thing before impliedbut never vulgarly shown was a lovely touch.
Mm Midge Susie having a thing,I don't think they had a thing
(01:12:45):
like that kind of thing. Yeah, I don't think so either. I
think, Yeah, it's so funnyhow people get everyone gets something so different
out of this. Yeah. OnSusie's um sexuality, you know, yeah,
having seen a lot of the comments, I think the idea that a
woman to be happy needs a familyis still prevalent. Midge had the perfect
nineteen fifties life in the first episode, and it wasn't for her. Sure,
(01:13:08):
she was crushing it, but itis okay to not want something you're
good at, especially when you havesomething you're great at. She was a
good housewife and a great comedian.Choosing to really excels brave, especially when
you could have just stayed. Itwas not hard for her to land a
rich man after Joel look at her. I loved it. But what I
loved most was it was true toher character. She was a comic and
(01:13:30):
she made that her life and workedhard at it. Frankly, good for
her, which I was that braveor at least had that waistline. Thomas
Smith from London, England. Thankyou, Thomas, Thank you so much.
Thomas and London. Can you leavea voicemail? Oh yes, yeah,
seriously, we like accents. Yes, okay. So the next email
(01:13:55):
is from Liz Todd. She says, dear marvelous Jade, Marvelous Kara,
and marvelous Erica. In my opinion, the Palladinos stuck the landing. I
was surprised to see so much friendlyfire on the Facebook Gaslight Cafe page.
I don't think it was necessary toanswer every question. A fun thing to
do would be for you, ladiesto ask your listeners to send you their
personal imagined answers to about ten questions, which you ladies prose. We need
(01:14:20):
rules so all hell doesn't break out. So maybe allow each commentary to pick
and answer just one of your questions. Here's a bonus you ladies get.
You ladies get a week ten toread and respond to your listeners fantasy endings.
That's I would love that. Iwould love to hear you guys's fantasy
endings. Here's an example. Ohshe got an example. Say we played
(01:14:42):
the game after week eight, butbefore the finale, Say one of your
fun questions was, what do youthink the last episode's name? Four minutes
means I would have answered with thecall was Midge's invitation to appear on par
that night, and she'll get fourminutes to do her thing. Then chaos
breaks out, just as it didbefore the Ford Show, but there's a
twist. We'll keep moisten Shirley inthe shower, also keep Dinah saving the
(01:15:04):
dress problem, but she's the onethat has to take a harrowing cab ride.
Susie is already having a stressful day, so we see her leaving the
office with her normal swift pace andlook of determination. She was determined to
get drunk. She goes to abar, then goes ice skating to blow
off more steam. Midge can't findher and desperately needs to get the par
(01:15:25):
news to her. Alphie magically appearsand magically locates Susie, and Susie gets
to the par show just in time. It gets worse. Rose was not
home when she calls. When thecalls came in about the par show,
poor Abe is out of his mindbut realizes all he can do is go
to the par show without her.Now a very drunk, drunk Susie learns
Rose is missing. Alphie magically locatesher too. She's at JFK. Susie
(01:15:49):
gets the news to Rose via acall to the white courtesy phone. Rose
picks it up and listens to Susiefor about three seconds before stopping her.
The camera pans out as we seeZelda, Yannish and the kids with her.
Then, for the first time infive years, Rose drops the an
F bomb. She responds to Susiein her normal sophisticated tone, saying,
all of you go fuck yourselves. We're going to Paris. Credits role tits
(01:16:13):
up, Liz, Wow, that'sa fa fiction. I think someone needs
to needs to call up Amazon AmazonPrime and say you got some pitches,
because you're clearly a writer. Thisis incredible. That was funny. That
was really fun Yeah, that wasawesome, Thank you, Liz. I
like that. Jade read it inRose's voice. Yeah, oh my gosh.
(01:16:38):
Next up is an email from VickyYamashita, and I will say she
included a picture of her and herfriend at the God's Fabulous, Marvelous Missus
masl Crime event and it is aperfect tits up picture. Got the tits
up adorable. If you would letus share that on Instagram, that would
(01:17:00):
be so much fun. Let usknow. She said in response too,
I think this was a question thatyou posed, Jade. How did you
feel about seeing Lenny again in sucha different light than how we were first
introduced to him. Yeah, OK, that was a question I put up
on the post, she said tothe second part of the question. First,
I would have never thought Lenny Brucewould be written as such a significant
(01:17:24):
part of Midge's life. I thoughtit was going to be treated more like
a cameo in the historical reference wasplaced there just for that to see him
part of the full story arc madehis role on par with the importance of
Susie. I agree, we allknow there could never be a happily ever
after, nor did we ever needto have a scene where Midge learns that
Lenny is dead. The way wegot that and the sadness we feel about
(01:17:46):
Lenny Bruce's ultimate demise was artfully expressedby Susie when she is sincerely and desperately
but with futility, attempting to getLenny to a better place, but his
addiction and problems are already so consumingthat she cannot even convince him to leave
the club to get a bite toeat. This punctuates that Lennie's journey is
(01:18:11):
coming to its foregone conclusion. Basedon the nineteen sixty five time stamp of
that scene, we know that Lenniedies the next year. Lenny was very
important to Midge's career. Susie knowsthat and knows how much Midge cares about
Lennie. Susie genuinely wants to helphim because she knows that if she could,
that would make Midge happy. Susieis frustrated and sad that Lennie is
(01:18:32):
rejecting the thing she, as amanager, can do for him. We
learned that Miriam has been outside theclub the whole time, hoping for good
news, but to no avail. The brevity of that acknowledgment tells me that
they've known for a while that thesituation is bad. That's true, but
when Lennie had asked about Midge,Susie lied and said that Midge wasn't around.
(01:18:55):
That was Susie protecting both of them. I found that so very generous.
Appreciate that ASP and DP place thetwo scenes with Lenny out of chronological
order, so the last time wesee Lenny and Midge together, they're happy.
They're eating salt and pepper shrimp andhaving a deeply touching exchange. The
foreshadowing of Linney telling Midge she'll bethe one paying for Chinese food someday was
(01:19:19):
Lennie giving Midge his unfettered support forher success. The exchange between them was
of love, genuine respect, andhope. So, despite some fans being
frustrated with the time jumps this season, placing the Lennie scenes out of chronological
order was a perfect storytelling device asa grade that did work out really nicely.
(01:19:42):
So these two genuinely want each otherto be happy. Midge is unconventional
and independent that final monolologue reference,as is Lenny, and they never had
a conventional relationship, so why wouldwe hope for even the fantasy of that
in the finale That wouldn't track. What we were shown was that they had
a strong bond and they cared foreach other very very deeply. This is
(01:20:03):
even more evident when we see thatMidge saves that fortune for years. I
believe Midge takes her faith and Lennyreally caring with her for the rest of
her life, long past tucking thefortune in her bra as a good look
charm. And she quoted, youmark my words, very soon, in
the not too distant future, youwill be paying for the Chinese food.
(01:20:26):
And she said, ps I attacheda photo from the night of the theater
screening of the series finale. Theyhanded out gifts and had a photo booth.
Some people even came dressed in Vinton'sclothing. I wore an outfit that
was a light nod to Susie Myerson. What a finale. I love it.
And she is wearing a leather jacket, so that is that is very
(01:20:48):
Susie got the tits up in thatphoto with your friend. I love it
so much. Man, Vicky, that was so well said, especially the
way that you put your take onwell said Midge Lenny's relationship. It's like,
thank you so well said exactly that. I agree. Good. Yes,
that was an excellent, excellent email. Oh my god, emails are
(01:21:12):
so goodawhelmingly amazing. Okay, andnow we have a voice message from Greg
gunther Er. Carol, this isvery belther calling in to give my sorry
(01:21:33):
than the end sadly of the marmalousnessas masin. Thank you so much for
reading my email last week in myreview. I appreciate it. It was
nice to hear, and I hopethat you will consider looking at Ted Lasso
(01:21:55):
because I think you guys could doa great job with it. I don't
know what else you could say aboutthis amazing episode of amazing. She was
fabulous of course the Gordon Ford Show, and she got there finally, she
(01:22:17):
did it her way. But Ithink my most marvelous moment is a really
small one, but I think itwas it just kind of buttoned up the
whole Midge and Joel relationship. Forme, it was the phone call that
(01:22:39):
Midge made to Joel, just hisutter excitement and you know, just the
way they talked to each other.Just it just made my heart happy.
So many moments, but that thatone, to me was just gold.
The way they the way they actedthat and there was just so many amazing
(01:23:01):
Persfonances. I can't I can't evenbegin to talk about it, how great
it was. Um, but Ihave so looked forward to hearing you guys
talk about the show, and Ican't wait to hear you guys talk about
only Murders because that's another favorite ofmine. Of course, all I can
(01:23:26):
say is tis yeah, Gregg,by the way, as much as we
would love to do Ted Lasso,I think another Podcastica, Oh yeah,
yeah, yes, they just theyjust announced it, so you know,
I gotta start. I gotta startwatching. Yeah, so we will have
(01:23:49):
a ted Lasso podcast for you.Um but yeah, once we start watching,
maybe one of us could guest onthat pod. Maybe. Yeah,
Because I'm pretty sure that I willlove that show based on what everyone says
about it and what I had, what I know about it. You know,
I just need to get so goodfind the time to watch it.
Yep, not enough hours in theday, seriously. Okay, alrighty,
(01:24:13):
So next we have an email fromJoe Anne's stire. Then yes, Joe
Anne. So before I get intomy thoughts and feelings about the final episode,
I wanted to let you know Idid change my mind about the scene
with Abe and his colleagues at dinner. I know my comments were Oh I
know my comments were a bit harshat the time. After listening to your
(01:24:33):
podcast, I did we watch episodeeight. I agree Tony shalubez abed an
outstanding. It was very sincere inhis realization that he never considered or told
mid she is a strong person, that she is doing everything on her own
and with fearlessness. It was veryheartwarming when he said when he said,
(01:24:53):
I don't think I ever told herthat, but here was my reason for
not caring for that scene. Atthe time, I was expecting or scenes
on mid doing or stand up.I especially was hoping to see her Carnegie
Hall gig. I was hoping tosee more backstory on Susie and Hetty's relationship.
I was thinking at the time,do we need this long scene?
But I changed my mind and yourpodcast as a reason. Ah, but
(01:25:16):
you know what, your reasons arevalid. They're totally totally valid. Now
onto the vital episode. It wasbittersweet, overwhelming, and yet satisfying.
I agree. I was very overwhelmedand anxious for so long Doordans like right
up to the four minutes. Ithought the way they handled the Letty storyline
was appropriate. Showing his deterioration towardsthe end of his life was much better
(01:25:42):
than having to be put through anotherfuneral. We all know what happens to
him. It was heartbreaking enough andthat is all we needed. I had
two marvelous moments, and the firstone was Midge and Susie at the Automat
restaurant. I love that nostalgic referenceof the time. Finally we get the
conversation about Susie's relationship with Hetty.I love the way Susie finally opened up
to Midge. The scene showed ushow they were definitely getting closer and trusting
(01:26:06):
each other. I don't think Susiewould have confided in anyone else but Midge.
I agree with Jada about how annoyingJade. Yeah, how annoying Gordon
Ford is yea beana jerk on thisepisode. I did love when he told
Midge she was on the show. When Midge leaves his office and does a
happy dancy, Yes, that wasmy marvelous moment. I was just as
(01:26:27):
excited for her. But later whenGordon Ford said to her, you're going
on as a lady writer on theshow and not as a stand up comedian,
my heart sank. I wanted topunch him, and I am not
a violent person. Then, whenSusie goes to Mike to clear things up,
the running bit of her screaming Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike,
Mike. It never gets old, that's what that's what an unexpected treat to
(01:26:50):
see Broadway start Leslie Kritzer as CarolBurnette. One, Yes, it was.
This is one of those Palladino treatsthey throw at us. Once in
a while, Yes they did.I was also touched by Abe and Rose
finally accepting Midge's talent and being proudof her. My next and biggest marvelous
moment masal moment was when Midge looksat the microphone. I think we all
(01:27:11):
knew what was next. I lovedwhen she called Susie over to tell her
what she was going to do.They both had tears in their eyes because
they knew it was their last scenetogether. When they said tits up for
the last time. I was bawlingto Midge's stand up is what I We've
been wait waiting for all season. She knocked it out of the park.
It was a full circle moment frompilot episode where she where we see her
(01:27:33):
take the stage of the gas Lightuninvited to the Gordon Ford Show again uninvited,
but as a much better and polishedcomedian. I love the ending scene,
knowing that Susie and Midge were bestfriends and soul mates in their later
years. Although it was sad seeingMidge that great big house and eating alone
to kitchen and here in Barbara Streisand'ssinging, I stayed too long at the
(01:27:54):
fair. In the background, thatwas a two tissue moment. Yes,
but remember in one of the previousseasons she told Joel when she was going
to go on tour with Shy Baldwin, she may be alone the rest of
her life, but this is whatshe wanted, and she wanted and she
achieved it. The comic relief atthe end was Susie in that crazy gray
(01:28:14):
haired wig. I never laughed sohard, Alex Borstina, Susie will be
forever my favorite TV character of alltime. I predict this will be their
Emmy episode. Thank you and goodnight, Thank you, joe Anne.
That was amazing, joe Anne.Wow, that was so like she just
went through the entire episode and highlightedall the all the things that need highlighting,
you know, all those glorious moments. Yeah, and I agree with
(01:28:38):
um well first of all, thatthis could be their Emmy episode. I
totally think right on this this wasthe best episode of the season. Right,
I mean I'm not alone here, right, I would say this at
a testa Rosiel. We're definitely yes. Yes, T was really good,
very different reason like, yeah, right, that's hard to hardy. This
(01:29:00):
one was more uplifting, yes,and satisfying the Testao steal was just like,
I guess, the way they filmedit and tied things together was just
so it was just practical. Yeah, yeah it was. And it was
just the amount of flash backs andflash forwards, like flashing all over the
place that they were doing, youknow, And I never would have thought
I would. It was so surprisinglywatchable. It was so surprisingly enjoyable.
(01:29:26):
And I agree with what she saysthat I was hoping to see more Midge
doing or stand up this season. We were all hoping to see that Cardy
Hall gig. I knew we werenever going to get it, but I
was hoping, you know, Karawas really hoping. I highly was me
too. I should have known. But I'm really glad that she came around
on the Abe scene because I don'tthink that that ever could have been sacrificed.
(01:29:48):
I think that there could have beenother things Gordon Ford that could always
be sacrificed, but that Abe scenewas so fucking moving, Like I I
don't know if I'll get over thatone anytime soon. Now. My favorite
Tony Schaleub moment ever, yeah sayingsomething yeah, yeah, yeah. Tony
(01:30:10):
Shaleub has nothing but mentionable moments. All right, Moving on to our next
email, Tammy Scott says, hello, marvelous girls. I think the finale
was fantastic and maybe the best episodeof the season. Tied, I swear
we just open this email. Ithink this was the best episode of the
season, tied with the test toRoasteel Tammy, Wow, are you listening
(01:30:30):
to our conversation right now? That'scrazy? How crazy is it? Guys?
That that's really nuts? Okay, surprising moment, even though Gordon Ford
is still a dick, Yes itis. He admitted that Midge was funny
and most importantly, that he waswrong. He redeemed him. That redeemed
him somewhat. In my eyes.Yeah, for me, it was too
little, too late. This wholeepisode was full of marvelous moments. But
(01:30:55):
my two favorites Susie telling Midge abouther and Hetty. The way her voice
broke, I was crying, Ohgot me too. My second kinda My
second kind of surprised me. Buton second viewing, I really enjoyed the
phone conversation between she and Joel whenshe told him she was going to be
on the show, than him tellingher that she could say anything. She
(01:31:15):
wanted about him, even if hecouldn't live in New York anymore. He
was so happy for her and thatwarmed my heart. Every scene in this
episode was gold, and don't evenget me started on the Lenny scenes.
Like I said, the whole episodewas one big marvelous moment. Oh greed
and Rachel Brosnahan has never looked morebeautiful. Tammy, You're like, are
you reading my note? Where areyou? Are you hiding with the hidden
(01:31:36):
cameras somewhere like those crazy can't can'twait to hear the podcast, Tammy and
Texas. Thank you, Tammy andTexans. Wow, you get us,
get us for sure? I loveit. Our next email is from Denise
Friedson said, Ladies, oh mygoodness, I can't believe we are at
(01:31:57):
the end of the Missus Maisel journey. This last episode, It's true,
has all the feels. I'm soglad Amy and Dan allowed us to relish
the entire Midge breakout. Wow.That was a roller coaster of cheering,
jeering and tears. There are somany moments worthy of mention in the finale,
and I'll start by saying the wordssatisfying. That is what comes to
(01:32:18):
mind. It is also the wordone of the actors mentioned in an interview.
Sorry, I can't recall which oneit was. Yeah, that sounds
I think a few of them mayhave. Yeah, I have to look
that up. Yeah. The scenestouched on each relationship. We love Midge
and Lenny, Midge and Joel,Aban, Rose, Shirley and Moist,
(01:32:40):
Emma Jane, Thank God, andMidge, and of course the whole reason
this show exists, Susie and Midge. Yes true. Seeing the flashback of
Midge and Lenny at the Chinese restaurantreminded me of why we loved their chemistry.
He was like her fairy godfather, seeing her brilliance and cheering her to
(01:33:00):
persevere. Then flashing forward to themid nineteen sixties when Lenny was spiraling down
and Midge was there behind the scenes, not able to face him, but
wanting to help via Susie, ithelped frame the arc of the ending of
their connection. I don't recall Susieever asking Midge for help. Aside from
this episode, the automat scene wasso heart wrenching and telling, My goodness,
(01:33:25):
I can watch Rachel Brosnahan and AlexBorstein anytime any day. They never
failed to move and impress me.That is true. I have seen traffic
online about Susie being in love withMidge, but I don't think she was.
Susie woke up from her post hettyslumber and grumpy existence. I love
that phrase host hetty slumber and grumpyexistence. When Midge took to the stage,
(01:33:50):
Susie needed Midge and Midge needed Susie. It was never about romantic love.
But I do think Midge saves Susie'slife. Yep. I can see
that, agreed yep. And ofcourse because of Susie, Midge had a
career. By the way, visually, the automat was my favorite scene of
the family right. It was superstunning and beautiful. Also, I love
(01:34:15):
how Midge uses food to try tocoke Susie into disclosing more about herself.
It reminds me of the Grays PapaiaHamburger scene where Mid shared her fries with
Susie for more information. Can't remesuch a good the callback. You know
what I didn't mention about that seedis did you see how much sugar Susie
(01:34:38):
put in her? Just like Iwas like, what is she doing?
I think it was because I thinkit was because she just she was like
freaking out what I was saying.Yeah, yeah, Pilot, Yeah,
she said. The series of telephonetag was wonderful. Finally Rose feels invited
(01:34:58):
and seen, and then is readyto see her daughter stands alcohol on stage.
Yes. I started tearing up duringthose calls. To see her family
finally embrace her career and cheer forher was almost more than I could take.
The call between Joel and Midge wasparticularly sentimental and sweet in reference to
(01:35:19):
Midge's b Altman days. I foundthe bit where she was in the makeup
chair hysterical. Midge always knows bestwhen it comes to her own makeup and
clothing, not like the other malecomedians who previously sat in that chair.
That's true, the makeup artists areprobably used to no pushback or feedback whatsoever.
(01:35:40):
As my most marvelous moments were justbefore and after Midges stand up during
the forced commercial break, when thecamera does a three sixty around Midge in
the microphone showing a way forward,I could barely contain myself. It was
her moment to seize. I couldn'tchoose between that moment and the moment after
the couch interview with Gordon, whenMidge and Susie look at one another in
(01:36:02):
pure triumph. It was so fullof feeling and yet there were no words.
Yes, such a good moment.I'm sure much will be said about
Gordon Ford and his antics just abit, k just a little bit.
But I know it. I knowit's tiring, guys, I know I'm
tiring about my Gordon hatred. I'msorry, but I just have to.
(01:36:25):
I have a podcast. This iswhy I have the last episode. It's
the episode. Yea, it isthe Palladino's fault, like they made him
this way like and I don't thinkit made a ton of sense. But
anyway, we already talked about that, so he said. But on the
second watch I did see him winkat Midge when he told her she was
fired. Initially I felt slightly sadfor Midge at the end, walking through
(01:36:48):
her huge penthouse alone, but onthe second watch, reading into it more,
I felt as though she was rightwhere she wanted to be, not
unhappy with her choices. We alreadysaid. I'm glad they ended with Susie
and Midge talking. They were friendsand had been all those years. After
they made up, and I wasgiddy seeing Susie crack up Midge Midget.
(01:37:14):
Midge always said Susie was the funniestperson she had ever met. The one
little thing that annoyed me, andit's totally cosmetic, was Susie's curly hair.
She never had curly hair before,so why when she grays would it
be curly? Totally an insignificant thoughtafter such a meaningful and well done finale.
I mean, sometimes hormones and well, yes, this is one thing
(01:37:36):
I will say. Oftentimes, whenhair goes gray, it curls. Yeah.
And Susie's hair always was a littlelike wavy. Yeah. And it's
not like, yeah, I thinkshe's got under a hat. She's got
that Jewish hair. I mean, most Susie is not Jewish or is so
yeah. Yeah. I realized midwayinto this season why I felt so strong
(01:38:00):
about Midge's plight as a female duringthis time. My own mother had grown
up in this era where females werebrought up to be educated in effort to
find a husband and discourage from otherambitions. My mom's brother was the golden
child, and all the family's resourceswent towards his future and not my mom's.
While my uncle had his college paidfor, which was quite a feat
(01:38:23):
for my grandparents, my mom hadto pay her own way through college,
undergraduate and graduate school. That's thesame from my mom, same thing.
Yeah, we are not that farremoved from now. This soa it made
me appreciate her hard work and sacrificemuch more than I had acknowledged in the
past. Any Who, the seriesmade the struggle of my mother's generation and
(01:38:45):
those before her much more obvious. But it is true. It's yes nice
that the series has kind of madeeveryone reflect on that. She said,
thank you for your commitment to keepingus Mazie's in the loop through your thoughts,
news stories, and details about theseries. I'm sad that the show
has ended, but completely satisfied withthe way it ended. Tits up,
(01:39:09):
everyone, Denise, tits up,Tits up, Denise, oh Man,
thank you. That was so wonderful. And you know, she reminded me
of something I wanted to say.I loved the fact, like the way
that um the ending when Susie wascracking up Midge. It's just so I
thought it when I was when Ifirst watched it. Like, you know,
Midge is the stand up and Susieis the one who telling the jokes.
(01:39:31):
Yeah, Susie's the one, youknow. And I think it's because,
like I've always felt like Susie isto be to see what good comedy
is, you yourself have to bea comedian. Problem is that Susie is
not a performer, but she's afucking comedian. She knows funny, you
know, She's got the trauma forit. It's like, yeah, yeah,
(01:39:53):
and he came out on the otherside exactly. Trauma equals humor um
truly, and Susie's gotten a lotof that. Yeah. So it always
just felt to me like Susie wasnot like the funniest one, but like
for Susie to be the one whocan make Midge die laughing, it's like
really saying something. And yeah,I loved that. Our last email is
(01:40:15):
from Gail Larner. My marvelous momentwas finding your podcast. Ah, I
would have not watched My Marvelous missusMaisel without your breakdown of the show.
I was fast forwarding over all thestorylines except for Midge's tu factory and Lenny's
routines. By the way, Ilove seeing Willa from Succession as Astrid hope
(01:40:36):
she's getting hope she gets recognition forher acting chops. Without your podcast,
I would have missed her performance becauseof the fast forwarding. Jade Erica Carott,
thank you, Gail, and I'mglad you slowed down to watch it
because it's an amazing show than askedmuch. Astrid really had some freaking golden
moments this season. I enjoyed everysingle second she was on screen. There
(01:41:01):
was there was a line that Astridhad that I forgot to mention when when
we podcasted about it. Um whenshe when they were all at that family
breakfast and Astrid was talking about us, she was trying to have another baby.
She they were saying like when theywere going to start um fertility of
drugs or whatever it was or what. I don't know if that's what they
were talking about, or if theywere just talking about when they were going
(01:41:24):
to start trying. And she said, well, we were going to do
it in the fall. But thenI had this dream about a snowman and
he was trying to scab me withthis carrot like it's way in the background
and if you listen really hard, you'll hear it. It cracked me us
oddly phallic dream. Yeah yeah,Rastrid really really made me laugh. Okay,
(01:41:49):
So our last voicemail to bring iton home is from our fourth co
host, Melanie Brown, the firstone to do to start the voicemail train,
and Melanie, she shall, sheshall end the voicemails here, So
here we go. You see.Hi, guys, it's Melanie calling in
(01:42:15):
with my feedback for episode the lastepisode, episode nine of the Marble.
It'smas of mysil Um you guys.I Oh, I'm so sad, but
it was a really good ride.I actually, um, I had different
(01:42:39):
different thoughts on the finale. Atfirst, I um, I didn't like
it as much um or I wasn't. I mean, I liked it,
but I wasn't like as pleased,and I had some I'm like oh.
But then when I rewatched it,I I really I saw the beauty and
(01:42:59):
it and I like the kind ofsimplicity of it. But um, Michael's
here and he would like to correctthe inaccuracy that is the title of this
episode. So yes, your honey, all right, well this is Michael,
my Michael. So I did Imeant to go back over it again
(01:43:19):
and get exact timings but I lovethat he did this. I did time
out how long the four minutes took. So from them going back up you
know, back to air till um, you know where she's sitting back on
this tool again with Gordon, tothe point where she stands up in front
(01:43:39):
of the microphone. That was thirtysix seconds. Um. She went from
that thirty six seconds till you know, through her whole act, which should
take at this point about the threeminutes and twenty four seconds um. That
that ended at seven minutes in sixteenseconds, and then she got went on
(01:44:01):
the couch and talked to Gordon fora little bit, which ended a little
after nine minutes. I apologize,I don't remember how many seconds, but
it was long four minutes. That'simpressive. I guess seven minutes in sixteen
seconds. Just you know, itdidn't have the same effect um as a
title. Wait. So guaranteed hedid not know that this like came out
(01:44:27):
in on IMDb trivia because they putall of those like He's exactly right,
he nailed it. I just lovethat he's like, hey, funny,
this feels like a little longer thanfour minutes. I'm gonna get my time
or out I love this, Michael, You're awesome. Yeah. Yeah,
wow, I want to thank youtalking about a tight ten I guess yeah,
um, but you know, Iit was still great. Um,
(01:44:51):
of course seeing you know Gordon laughslike, of course, you know she's
funny. Oh, I didn't knowyou were funny. Whatever. Um,
you know it was funny when wewere I was listening to my feedback.
Um, during the episode, itoccurred to me I kept saying that Hetty
(01:45:15):
and Gordon were so such a bizarrecouple, and you know, I just
I really, at the end ofthe day, I think they're made for
each other in their own weird way. Um, I'm no one else should
be should be around them. Let'sjust put okay. I don't know about
the whole Hetty thing. I don'tknow. I want to like Hetty and
(01:45:38):
maybe it's just because I love NinaArianda so much. Yeah, but she
hurts Susie, so there's there's it'svalid. Yeah, but it's also the
sign of the times. Yeah yeah. And she she also wasn't that nice
as Susie when she was like,oh that really hurt to ask me,
didn't it wasn't it? Yeah?So I was like, hey, I
(01:46:00):
know rude or at least and Ia long term relationship with those two.
They deserve each other. But um, I like that Susie finally opened up
to Mitch about her life and differentthings, and it made me cry.
(01:46:20):
And you know, um, Iloved maybe my most marvelous moment of the
whole series, Um was when sheturned to when Mitch um turned to Gordon
and said that I'm not very goodat following roles. That effect, Um
(01:46:44):
it was, and yeah, Iwas so proud of her. Um,
that's my girl. And I loved, you know, seeing Rose in the
audience and saying when she made thecomment about Esther's trauma will happen when she
goes on when she goes out toclose shop with her mom, and she
(01:47:09):
said that's fair, which made melaugh. Yeah, you know, and
of course her her little you knowhow she flew the kiss to Jewel and
you know, I know a lotof people hate Jewel and I know,
whatever, But in this episode,we are supposed to believe. I truly
(01:47:32):
believe this that the thing we aresupposed to take from the whole Jewel story
is that he literally is not theman she married, and he actually became
someone who was in many ways probablystill the best person for her, even
(01:47:55):
if they will never remarried, evenif they never had a long term even
when take relationship afterwards. I mean, well, I guess it's not true
because I don't think they ever stoppedhaving a romantic relationship even when they were
married at our people and that ifthey were, I mean, if Joel
(01:48:15):
ever re married. But regardless evenif he did, I don't think we
all know, we all know whoyou know, and I don't think that
Amy and Danne would sit here anddispute that. I think it was obvious
that it was always Joel ye orimage. Um, but I think the
whole idea that you know, marrya strong man, marry a man who's
(01:48:39):
everything. And he wasn't a strongman at the beginning of the series,
but throughout the series he became astrong man and he was, you know,
so proud to be the excess thatis truly. I'm sorry, I'm
just laughing because it maybe laughed somuch to the extra. If you look
(01:48:59):
at her, she's just so like, oh my god, she's just like
okay, I think, um,sorry, I'm a little stream of consciousness
here. That's why I said thatvoice fails and not right emails, because
you know I worked better when I'mjust you knows, bounding out and I
(01:49:27):
don't know, I'm really sad it'sover. Um. I mean I could
critique it. There's a few things, Um, you know I would have
liked to see, but you know, at the end of the day,
it was great. And um,oh that's what I want to say.
You know, it really the storyweapon about Joel and Image. I mean,
(01:49:51):
that's never the story. And itsame as like Gilmore Girls, It's
never about like the romantic relationship.Well you know, Luke and Lorelai are
are there. It was always aboutyou know, Rory and Lorelai and Emily
and so at the end of theday, that's those are the stories you're
(01:50:12):
supposed to latch onto. And thenand this is Menzel. It was never
about Midge and Joel. It wasalways about Susie Image. Um. And
they're little, you know, andhow at the end of the day,
Um, you know they're soul sistersin a way, right, soul mate,
(01:50:33):
soul sisters whatever you want to callthem. Yea. And to end
on them having this just normal conversationwhich seemed very unscripted. Who knows,
maybe Alexai is so amazing, youknow, she's just not amazing having them
(01:50:58):
laugh hysterically about, you know, while watching Jeopardy and just having a conversation,
like we all have goofy conversations allthe time. So that was the
best way to end the series.Or are you trying to get my attention?
Yes, okay, my husband wantsto talk now. I just wanted
to say, I can't imagine abetter ending. I've really it was perfect
(01:51:23):
and if I fun look really good, it did. I'm glad you wasn't
eating it while lying down by bitch. Um. So I love you guys,
Thank you for the podcast. Um, I'll be around for the rewatch
and um, I will definitely seeyou guys in August four. Elie murders
(01:51:47):
in the fielding Hi guys, thankyou bye. Emily. Oh my gosh,
I was alway right. I loveit, But I got to say
Joel. I had to hold myselfback from gushing too much about Joel and
Midge m during this episode because Ilike already said like that I'm a goner,
(01:52:11):
like I was all in already withJoel. But I think it is
huge that he said to her,you know, I don't care say whatever
you need to say about me,Like I would like to be able to
still live in New York City towhole morning, but like, don't worry
about it. And the growth thathe has had and the progress he's made
(01:52:33):
in feeling comfortable with that and soproud of her, Like the pride that
he felt watching her was palpable, and I just h yeah, I agreed.
I know. It's like right atthe last minute, I'm like,
I just love them to get Ijust love Michael Zegan. I love this
(01:52:54):
relationship. I just I get it. I love it. It's it's grown
on me. It's I've had fiveseasons to really just feel them together and
appreciate the writing and how they developed. I think that is one character arc
that they really did do a goodjob with. And obviously Michael Zegan did
a fantastic job portraying Joel. Butif you had told me even I don't
(01:53:19):
know, like at the beginning ofthis season that I'd walk away loving Joel,
I still would have been like,no, yo, yeah, same,
he's still weak. Each did likegood cheats on Midge. I'm sorry,
all right, so listeners, thatis all the feedback that we have
(01:53:41):
as far as emails goes emails andof voicemails. So wow, like holy
shmagoli, Like we got a lotof feedback. So we have so much
more to go on Facebook and Instagram. We just do not have time to
do it all right now. Sowe're going to have to put all of
our respond reading and responding to theFacebook and Instagram feedback on our interview episode,
(01:54:05):
which will be coming out very soon. As soon as we nail down
a time that works for all ofus that we can speak with M.
Matilda, we will have that interviewready and then we'll just you know,
tack on all the feedback and wecan make it like a nice you know
series wrap up and we can justtake our time with it and really,
you know, be more awake andalert to read all of your wonderful feedback
(01:54:27):
because seriously, just those emails alonethis week, Like, I'm so overwhelmed
at our listeners, the way thatyou guys articulate yourselves, the things that
you guys are coming up with, and just the love that you're giving us,
Like oh wow, wow, itreally very much appreciated. Yeah,
yeah, it truly keeps me going. Every time I think, oh,
(01:54:49):
I'm tired, I don't want todo the I don't want to take notes
on I want to do the podcast. I'm not that I ever really think
I don't want to do a podcastwhatever. Anytime I think like, is
it worth all the effort, I'lllike listen to this feedback and read the
stuff that you guys are saying, and I'm just like, it's so worth
it. Absolutely, just yeah,I really think you guys, this has
been this has been incredible, andI'm sad to say that is that is
(01:55:15):
