Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of our podcast, Plants, Flowers,
Oils and Whimsy. I'm your host, Carrie Sharf, and I'm
so glad you're here. Today we're diving into a topic
that's very close to my heart and quite literally close
to our skin, the changes that come with mature skin,
and how we can support and celebrate those changes with hydration, collagen, care,
(00:25):
and confidence. As we age, our skin naturally shifts. Maybe
it feels dryer, or you've noticed fine lines appearing, or
perhaps your favorite skincare products don't work quite the same.
These changes are entirely normal and absolutely nothing to worry about.
They're just part of our beautiful evolution. But that doesn't
mean we can't nurture our skin in wonderful, nourishing ways
(00:46):
to feel and look radiant. In today's episode, we'll be
talking about simple skincare practices that you can easily incorporate
into your routine, the most beneficial foods and vitamins to
help from the inside out, and creating daily rituals that
boost not just our skin, but our spirit to so
stay tuned, because we're about to embark on a journey
to embrace and enhance our mature skin with love and care.
(01:09):
As we get older, one of the first things we
might notice is a decline in our skin's natural oil production.
This happens because our skin produces less sebum, the oil
that keeps our skin moisturized and protected. Without enough sebum,
our skin's protective barrier weakens, allowing moisture to escape more easily.
This is why dryness, flakiness, or increased sensitivity often become
(01:31):
more common as we age. So how do we bring
that vital moisture back to our skin gently and effectively.
It starts with choosing the right cleanser. Opt for something creamy, milky,
or oil based. These types of cleansers are less likely
to strip your skin of its natural oils. Instead, they
help preserve your skin's moisture and maintain its protective barrier. Next,
(01:54):
let's talk about layering your hydration. Think of it like
watering a plant. You don't just dump a bucket of
water on it, you missed it. First. To prepare the soil,
start with a hydrosol like rose or camomile as a
beautiful first step to hydrate and calm the skin. Following that,
apply a light water based serum containing humenctins like glycerine
or hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture into the skin to
(02:17):
seal in all that hydration. Finish off with a nourishing
facial oil or balm. Rose Hip, jojoba or colendula infused
oils are excellent choices for mature skin. They're rich in
essential fatty acids and antioxidants which help to soothe and
fortify your skin's barrier. And let's not forget about internal hydration,
which is just as important. In addition to drinking plenty
(02:40):
of water, consuming water rich foods can make a big difference.
Foods like cucumbers, berries, melons, and even soups and herbal
teas contribute to your overall hydration. Some of my favorite
herbal teas for skin support include nettle tea, which is
great for minerals, and hibiscus tea loaded with antioxidants. Hydration
is the foundation of healthy, glowing skin, especially as we mature.
(03:03):
By choosing the right products and nourishing our bodies from
the inside out, we can support our skin's natural beauty
and resilience. Now, let's move on to another crucial aspect
of mature skin care, supporting collagen production. Collagen is the
protein that gives our skin its structure, firmness, and that
youthful bounce. However, as we age, starting in our mid
(03:25):
to late twenties and accelerating in our forties and fifties,
collagen production naturally slows down. This can result in a
loss of firmness, more noticeable wrinkles, and thinner skin. So
how can we support collagen production naturally. One of the
best topical ingredients for this is bacucciol Bacucciol is a
gentle botanical compound extracted from the babchi plant. It's a
(03:47):
fantastic plant based alternative to RETINL, known for its ability
to enhance skin firmness and reduce the appearance of fine lines,
all without the irritation that sometimes accompanies RETINL. This makes
it an excellent choice for sensitive or mature skin. You
can find baccuciole in facial oils or serums, and it's
even a wonderful booster if you create your own DIY
(04:07):
skincare blends. But topical treatments are just one part of
the puzzle. Nutritional support is equally important for collagen production.
Let's start with vitamin C, which is essential for collagen synthesis.
You can make sure you're getting enough vitamin C by
including citrus fruits, red bell peppers, strawberries, and broccoli in
your diet. Another vital nutrient is zinc, which helps with
(04:28):
skin healing and cell repair. Sources of zinc include pumpkin seeds, chickpeas,
and seafood. Silica is another key player in collagen and
elastin support, found in foods like oats, cucumbers, and leafy greens.
And let's not forget about protein, as skin is fundamentally
made up of amino acids. Including quality protein sources like beans, lentils, fish, eggs,
(04:50):
or even a good collagen rich bone broth can be beneficial. Lastly,
if you want to use collagen supplements, go for hydrolyzed
collagen peptides and take them with vitamin C to enh
and subsorption. These steps, both topical and nutritional, can support
your skin's collagen and help maintain its youthful structure and resilience.
All right, now that we've covered hydration and collagen support,
(05:11):
let's zoom in on the vitamins that are especially powerful
for mature skin. First up, vitamin A in its whole
food form, like beta carotene, it is fantastic for cell renewal.
Think about including foods like carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy
greens in your diet. These not only support your skin's health,
but also contribute to overall well being. Next, let's talk
(05:32):
about vitamin E. This vitamin is incredibly soothing, healing, and
offers protective benefits. You'll find it abundantly in nuts, seeds, avocados,
and sunflower oil. Incorporating these foods into your meals can
provide your skin with the nourishing benefits it needs to
stay healthy and resilient. Vitamin D is another crucial vitamin
for mature skin. It plays a key role in skin
(05:53):
repair and immune function. Many of us may find our
levels of vitamin D dropping, especially during the winter months,
so it's often official to consider a supplement if needed.
Omega three fatty acids are also essential, particularly for skin
barrier health and moisture retention. Foods like salmon, flax, seeds,
and chia are rich in omega threes and can help
keep your skin hydrated and supple. And let's not forget
(06:15):
the power of polyphenols. These antioxidants are found in green tea, berries,
and even a little dark chocolate. Polyphenols help reduce inflammation
and oxidative stress, contributing to healthier, more vibrant skin. You
don't have to overhaul your entire diet to see benefits.
Just try adding one skin loving food a day and
observe how your skin responds over time. It's small adjustments
(06:36):
like these that can make a noticeable difference in the
health and appearance of your skin. There's no denying the
pressure society places on us to look young forever, but
let's be honest. Confidence comes from a place far deeper
than surface appearance. It's about caring for yourself with intention,
honoring the journey you've been on, and finding joy in
(06:56):
those small, meaningful rituals that are just for you. One
of the most beautiful aspects of skin care is its
ability to become a ritual, a moment of connection with yourself.
It's not about vanity. It's about taking time to honor
your needs and affirm your worth. Imagine creating a simple
evening ritual for self care. Start by missing your face
(07:16):
with a calming floral water, something like rose or lavender.
These not only hydrate your skin, but provide a soothing
scent that can help you unwind. Follow up with a
nourishing oil that contains bacucciol a gentle plant based alternative
to retinol that's perfect for mature skin. Take a moment
to give yourself a slow, gentle facial massage. This not
only helps your skin absorb the products better, but also
(07:39):
calms your mind and prepares you for RESTful sleep. Light
a candle, play some soft music, and breathe deeply. These
small acts of care tell your nervous system and your
heart that you are worthy of time, tenderness, and attention.
It's a form of self love that radiates from the
inside out. Another wonderful way to build confidence through skin
care is by keeping a skincare or self care journal.
(08:02):
Document your routine, how your skin feels, and any changes
you notice over time. Reflect on how these small rituals
make you feel, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually.
This practice can deepen your connection to your own needs
and help you appreciate the evolution of your skin as
a natural, beautiful process. These self care practices aren't just
about achieving radiant skin. They're about cultivating a sense of
(08:24):
peace presence and confidence in who you are. When you
approach skincare as a ritual of care and connection, it
becomes a powerful tool for building your confidence and celebrating
your unique beauty. And that brings us to the end
of today's episode. Let's recap what we've covered. We explore
the importance of hydration and how it forms the foundation
of healthy skin, discuss ways to support collagen production both
(08:47):
topically and nutritionally, and highlighted the essential vitamins that play
a significant role in maintaining mature skin. Lastly, we talked
about the importance of confidence and how intentional self care
rituals can bolster both your skin and spirit. Remember, supporting
your skin means supporting your whole self. These practices aren't
just about skincare. They're about nurturing your health and well
(09:09):
being in a holistic way. If you enjoyed today's episode,
