Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hello, and welcome to the podcast Podcasting Tips Weekly. Well
this is our first episode and that's pretty exciting. My
name is Ryan Tillotson. I am the CEO of Strahat Media,
a podcast protection agency and network. I've been producing podcasts
since twenty seventeen and podcasting has been my life every

(00:29):
day since then, which is a wild thing. But I've
never been a host of a podcast on my own.
My wife and I host the Only Murders in the
Building podcast, which is very successful and very fun and
if you love the show, you will love the podcast
where we talk to all of the cast and crew
and creators of the show. Anyway, this is not about me,

(00:51):
this is about you, and in this podcast, each week
we will be diving into a single tip or trend
in the podcasting industry, something quick, actionable and advice to
help you improve your show. Today's tip is all about
getting yourself booked as a guest. This is one of

(01:12):
the best ways to grow your audience. And this is
also something that we will definitely be revisiting in the
future because it's a game changer, like I said, for
growing your audience, and I'll probably have new advice and
things could potentially change about the way that I approach
this for our clients right now. But speaking of clients, recently,
one of our clients needed help getting booked on other

(01:34):
shows and I just shared the simple but highly effective
strategy with her and within a short time she secured
multiple guest spots, and I think there are many more
prospects for her to come and I thought, let's share
this with you. So with that being said, here's the tip.

(01:55):
There is an incredible website called Reefhonic. Let's use that
website to discover similar podcasts. Go to rephonic dot com
slash graph and type in the name of a show
that would be a great fit for you to be
a guest on. It will instantly generate a network of

(02:17):
similar podcasts. These are all potential opportunities for you. Now.
If you're using the paid version of refonic, which is
about one hundred and fifty dollars a month, you will
get access to some very valuable data which will make
this process much quicker for you. That data includes how
many episodes the show has released, when they last published

(02:40):
an episode, how many reviews they have, how many followers
they have, and most importantly, the email address listed in
the RSS feed and with that email address, you can
directly reach out to the show. And what I would
do is just start a list, start a list in
Google spreadsheet of the name of the show and the

(03:03):
email address associated with it, and get it going. Aim
for like fifty or one hundred so that you can
reach out to them and get on those shows. Okay,
but what if you don't have a paid refhonic account.
Totally get it not something you want to invest your
money into right now, though it is very helpful and
once your podcast starts growing, I do recommend getting it.

(03:25):
But if you're just starting out and you don't want
to spend one hundred and fifty dollars a month extra
because you've already bought the MIC, you're already paying for
the non linear editing system, or you have a team
that you're paying for to help you produce your show,
totally get it. What you can do is you can
still get that graph from Refonic. You can still see
all the similar shows click on one, and then what

(03:45):
you need to do is find the RSS feed so
you can use a website like getrssfeed dot com. You
plug in the Apple podcast link or Spotify link. And
it will give you the RSS feed. Copy that and
paste it into your browser. Once you do that, you
will see a weird list of code which will be
very confusing to you, and you don't need to understand it.

(04:06):
That's fine. But what you can do from there is
do command F or if you're on Windows control F
and search for the AT symbol, hit enter, and that
will help you quickly locate the email address they have
listed for their podcast. Copy that, add it to your list.

(04:26):
Repeat that process until your list is full. Like I said,
go for a fifty, go for one hundred, go for
two hundred, go crazy. The more you reach out to,
the better chances you have being a guest on these shows.
And then when you do reach out, keep it simple,
don't make it long, don't make it sales pitchy. What

(04:47):
I would recommend doing for the email is explaining a
little bit about who you are, why you're reaching out,
and what you can offer to their show, because that's
going to be the big seller, right What is it
that you're offering. Then yes, obviously it's a huge thing
for you to be on their podcast, but you need
to be providing something of value to them as well.
So figure out what that is and send out your emails.

(05:10):
It could probably be the same thing for them all,
but yeah, send them out and you know, let me know,
let me know. I'm so curious how this works for you.
That we have a lot of success with this, so
hopefully you do as well. Okay, And there is also
another option if you don't want to take this route,
which is potentially free, consider pr or booking agencies. There

(05:31):
are several different types of companies that provide this service.
You could be paying anywhere from two thousand to five
thousand dollars a month, which is rough. And if you
have a notable platform already, like a best selling book already,
a successful podcast, or maybe a popular YouTube channel, these
pr agencies will have much more luck. But you can
always hire another company. But it really comes down to

(05:52):
your budget and your time, so something to consider. It
is an option, but it's not really the tip that
I have for you. The tip I have for you
is what I just said earlier, which is go to rephonic.
Do this for yourself. It's not that hard. Have your
kid do it, you know, do you have an assistant,
have them do it. Build this list, spend an hour

(06:13):
a day. Get it going. You can do it. You
can do it. Okay, that's it. That's our first podcast tip.
Start making your list of potential shows, reach out and
keep building those connections. If you have any questions or
need any advice, feel free to reach me Ryan at
tips at Strahamedia dot com. Best of luck out there,

(06:34):
and I'll see you next week
