Warning! Prospect Watch is not your average hockey podcast and that's OK with us.

Our goal is to introduce you to stars in the making from all over the world. They may not be household names yet but we assure you they will be soon enough.

Welcome to Prospect Watch a Pod Cast that focuses solely on the discovery and promotion of some of the best young talent in the game today from all reaches of the world.

On this episode we are joined by Cameron Reid from the Kitchner Rangers!

Getting Familiar:
Now for those of you that may not be familiar with Cameron or his game. You're in for a treat because this young man should be considered one of the deadliest offensive threats that patrols the blue line coming out of this draft. And the reason for that is his skating ability. When Cameron is moving out there on the ice it just appears effortless. Which should go without saying that it allows him to perform well during breakouts and while cycling the puck around the offensive zone. Which he does with ease as he looks to set himself or a fellow teammate up with the best opportunity to score a goal. To prove this, you don't have to look much further than the 10 goals and 31 assists for a total of 41 points scored this season in 49 games played. Think about guys who wouldn't want a defenseman that scores at or near a points-per-game pace, especially when you add to it that Cameron is a plus player. As evident by him finishing last season with a +18 average and he already is maintaining a +23 average this season.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Warning, prospect Watch is not your average hockey podcast, and
that's okay with us. Our goal is to introduce you
to stars in the making from all over the world.
They may not be household names yet, but we assure
you they will be soon enough. Welcome to prospect.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Watch, Ladies and gentlemen.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Welcome to the next episode of prospect Watch with your
host Land Screen.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
All right, guys, hello, and welcome back to prospect Watch,
a podcast that focuses solely on the discovery and promotion
of the some of the best young talent in the
game today from all reaches of the world. As Steele
just said, I'm your host, Lance Green, and of course
joining me and sticking around will be Steele. But Stele,
we have a pretty special guest with us today.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
When you say, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, I'm
super excited, we're both excited to sit down and talk
to a great, great player for you guys today.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yes, sir, this week we have left hand shooting defenceman
from the Kitchener Rangers, Cameron Reed.

Speaker 4 (01:29):
Cam. How are you, brother? Thank you for joining us.

Speaker 5 (01:33):
Yeah, I'm great, I'm great. Thanks for having me. I
appreciate it.

Speaker 4 (01:36):
For sure, for sure. So guys, you're right, so, yes,
we're ready to go.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Right.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
If you don't know this young man, you soon will.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Let's just say that if you don't, right, so, you're
in for a treat here, because this young man is
considered one of the deadliest offensive threats that patrols the
blue line coming out of this draft and my mind right,
and the reason for that is his skating ability. When
Cam is moving out there on the ice, it just

(02:07):
appears effortless, which should go without saying since it allows
him to perform well during breakouts and while cycling the
puck around in the offensive zone, which he does with
ease as he looks to set himself or his fellow
teammate up with the best opportunity to score a goal.

(02:28):
To prove this, you don't have to look much farther
than the ten goals and thirty one assist for a
total forty one points score this season. Think about that. Guys,
who wouldn't want a defenseman that is a threat to
score anytime he touches the ice, especially when that defenceman

(02:50):
can still maintain a plus twenty two average.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
Yeah Cam has this year? Oh yeah, right, So I
don't know about you.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Steele.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
But I'm ready to start asking this young man some
questions because I think he's gonna be one of the
steals of this draft. I think people are sleeping on him,
and I don't know why we.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Aren't, right, right, right, right, We aren't sleeping on him,
that's for sure. Cam. Thanks for joining us, buddy. We're
gonna ask you a couple of quick questions. You ready
to go?

Speaker 6 (03:19):
Oh yeah, I'm ready.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Okay. So we just heard Lance talk a lot about
some of the accolades and a little bit about your game.
But so if you could kind of maybe expond on
that a little bit for our fans and our listeners,
if you could maybe tell us a type of player
that you are, if you maybe modeled yourself after an
NHL or or somebody that maybe you look after, somebody

(03:42):
that you modeled your game after.

Speaker 5 (03:43):
Maybe Yeah, you know, I try to just think of
myself as an offensive and defensive defenseman, and I tried
them on the game after Duncan Keith.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
Yeah, yeah, not not playing anymore.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
But the guy that I've I've watched girl up and
who I like to midel my game after.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
That's that's a pretty lofty company. I would think, and
and I tell you, I'd say it's pretty good. What
do you think he's pretty fat on.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
He's definitely got some hardware over over, you know Duncan
Keith's career. Yeah, he was a pretty good one as that.
I think he was a little underrated too in my mind.

Speaker 1 (04:20):
I agree. I agree.

Speaker 4 (04:21):
All right.

Speaker 3 (04:22):
So I see you were named as an assistant captain
this year. Can you tell that relations exactly? Can you
tell us what exactly that meant to you and whether
you consider yourself a leader both out on the ice
and then in the locker room.

Speaker 6 (04:38):
Yeah, that meant a lot to me.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
Tells me I'm doing something right, which you know I appreciate.

Speaker 6 (04:44):
Tells me.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
Uh, you know, guys can look up to me in
the locker room. But uh, you know, it just means
that continue to be myself. Just like I said, it
means I'm doing something right. So just continue to be myself,
lead by example. That's one thing important thing for me.
And uh, just keep on keep on going every day.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Cool. So are you more of a are you more
of a you know this is how I'm doing it?
Or are you a vocal leader?

Speaker 6 (05:10):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (05:10):
I like to this is how I do it kind of.
I like to I like to use actions before words.
As some of my family tells me. Uh, I think
actions actions speak louder than the words. So that's that's like,
it's how I like.

Speaker 6 (05:22):
To go by.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
But you know, sometimes you need to be vocal too,
so I can. Uh, it could be either one. It
just depends on the situation.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Okay, there you go, There we go. That's that's a
very heady answer. I think we we've seen some of
the things that we consider some of your best attributes.
Could you tell us what one of your best attributes
is and maybe could you tell us a skill that
maybe you need a little work on.

Speaker 5 (05:47):
Yeah, I would say some of my best attributes would
probably just be miss skating and my hockey IQ. I'd
also put competitiveness up there. That's I love to compete
and I always want to win, and uh say something
and that I want to work on and probably just
be my shot, you know. Uh, maybe physicality too, just
been get more uh get more bucks to than that

(06:09):
and just boxing out more.

Speaker 6 (06:10):
It's just the simple things like that.

Speaker 3 (06:14):
Okay, exactly, I think Cam, I I think I've seen
a little bit more physicality from you.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
This year already this year, I would say.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, and Steele and I were just talking before you
jumped on with us that you know, we like how
you you don't retreat so much as you know, your
your six foot and you know, under two hundred pounds,
but you stand people up in the blue line and
that's kind of rare in the NHL nowadays. A lot

(06:43):
of guys unless they're six foot four, six foot five
defenseman or are not willing to play the body as
much as you are right now. So you know, kudos
to you for that.

Speaker 6 (06:54):
Thank you?

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Right, So all right, So if.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
I'm being honest with that being said, I think you
surprise a lot of people with your play this year.
And what I mean by that is you managed to
almost double your point totals from last year already this season.
So you know, what do you contribute to your success
in that regards? I mean, did you just stay at
the rink all summer in the offseason or what.

Speaker 5 (07:19):
Yeah, I'd say it's it's a lot of hard work,
but I'd say also opportunity goes in there, got more
opportunity this year. But you also you learned from the
past year, You learned from the guys that were there
before you, you know, you had I had Mo.

Speaker 6 (07:32):
Two as my partner all last year.

Speaker 5 (07:34):
Got to learn from him and what he's all about
as a as a player and especially as a person,
the way he thinks the game. You know, guys like
Bruskevitch and Anon Oscar you are still on my team
this year. You learn from all those guys around you,
And I think that's what just contributes to my play
this year and my development.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
You know, I think I think that's exactly gonna lead
directly into this next question, because I don't think the
average fan knows exactly the time and effort that goes
into playing hockey at the level that you're at. So
can you maybe share with us what an average non
game day consists for you, Like from sun up to sundown.

Speaker 6 (08:15):
Yeah, so you kind of get up early.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
We have we have our practices and our workouts early
in the morning, and then we have school after so
we'll love our practice, our workouts and stretches, anything like
that you need uh.

Speaker 6 (08:27):
Off and uh and on the ice.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
We'll do that throughout the day and then right after
all that all that's done. I'm still in high school.
I'm in grade twelve, So we'll do I'll do school
for around four hours and then kind of come home,
eat dinner, and uh maybe do some homework, hang out
with some of the guys, and that'll be a day
right there.

Speaker 6 (08:47):
And then then it kind of repeats, there you go.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
You gotta put in that time, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (08:54):
Right, So, I'm an old goaltender and I'm kind of
particular when it comes to defenseman up and who I
put my stamp of approval on. But I must say,
I think you have to face some pretty tough competition
on a nightly basis this year with Michael Misha and

(09:16):
Porter Martone and all those other guys that are coming
across your blue line at you can you tell us,
like how you managed to stay a plus player and
you know, be so defensively responsible when when others aren't
so lucky in that regards playing against those players.

Speaker 5 (09:38):
Yeah, it's definitely hard to play against guys like those
because they're the top players in the league and they're
very skilled. But lucky enough to have Parsons behind me,
who's I think the best goal that I've played with
so far in my career.

Speaker 6 (09:52):
So have him know he's behind you.

Speaker 5 (09:54):
That definitely gives you confidence and make plays, step up
and even take risks sometimes. So I think that's a
big contribution to my success and a lot of the
team's success too.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
So but you know, just play my game.

Speaker 5 (10:09):
I have confidence in myself too, and my teammates around me.

Speaker 6 (10:13):
I think that's just all kind of combining together.

Speaker 3 (10:17):
Yes, shout out to Jackson. He was on the show
last year with us. Great great goaltender.

Speaker 1 (10:24):
For sure, man for sure for sure.

Speaker 2 (10:27):
I remember that.

Speaker 1 (10:28):
What an excellent, excellent thing. So okay, so this season
you got to play in the Ilinka Gretzky Cup, were
you guys Team Canada were able to strap that gold
medal around your neck? How did that make you feel?
And what kind of an honor was that to get
to where your team are your your country's colors.

Speaker 6 (10:47):
Yeah, it was awesome.

Speaker 5 (10:48):
I mean, especially with it being in Canada, Edmonton in particular,
it was always cool to have home fans come and
support you.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
But always just putting on that jersey.

Speaker 5 (10:57):
It's an honor because you're representing your country and where
you're from especially, so it's it's always just kind of
a once in a lifetime opportunity. And you guys have
to take advantage of it, which we thankfully dead got
the gold, which is uh, it's always nice, you know,
it's always a great feeling. And you look back at
that and you'll probably you will remember it forever.

Speaker 4 (11:18):
I see the jersey hanging up behind you, you know,
I was.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Just gonna say, Man, is that? Yeah, buddy, there you
go Team Canada jersey? All right? Yeah, you know what,
you wouldn't happen to have that medal handy would ye?

Speaker 6 (11:29):
Oh no, it's my time, my regular house.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
Okay, okay, safe keepings, Yeah right, okay. So in addition
to the Henko Gretzky Cup, you get asked to play
in the inaugural Prospect Challenge game, Yeah, where the best
players of the CHL took on Team USA.

Speaker 4 (11:48):
What what was that like? And can you name.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
One player either you played with or against in that
game that that really stood out and impressed you in
your mind?

Speaker 2 (12:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (12:00):
That was That was a cool experience because I got
to play with guys I've never really got to play with.
I've only played against most of them. So guys like
the guys that stood out. Michael Miso was one who
have only really played against and never got to play with.
And that was a cool, cool chance to play with
him because you could just you get a different side
of you know, what they're like to play with, and

(12:23):
it's kind of cool that way. But the guy that
jumped out to me was actually you used to be uh.
It was on my team in Bishop Kearney when they
played before the OHL. It was Jack Murtech. He was
He's a guy that I've always loved playing with. I
played with them for two years before coming to the OHL,
and he's the guy that jumped out. Had a couple

(12:44):
of goals in those two games, and he looked really
good himself.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
He did have a good couple of games.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
There for sure, for sure. And it was it was
great watching the It was great watching the games and
it was it was great watching you get out there
and then get after it. So that's really awesome. And
I listen, I know we've talked a lot about Cam
the hockey player. Okay, but can you perhaps maybe share
with us something that we might be surprised to find

(13:10):
out about you, maybe say away from the rink.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
Yeah, it's a good question. But one thing I usually
people don't really know about me is that well I
love to eat food in particular, but I like to cook.
So whenever I get a chance to cook at home,
I'll cook up some fish, chicken, steak, whatever it is.

Speaker 6 (13:31):
I try to just cook it up, make a meal
for myself.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
Okay, So what's your favorite one to make? Because I'm
an I'm an ex chef creak meal? Do you do
you make it yourself? Or what's your favorite thing to cook?

Speaker 6 (13:46):
Oh? I only usually do cook in the summer.

Speaker 5 (13:49):
And any type of fish is usually my favorite.

Speaker 1 (13:56):
Okay, Okay, there you go.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
That's cool.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Sounds good man. Hit me up if he needs some recipes, buddy,
because I'm an ex draf here man, so I can
I can put you up.

Speaker 6 (14:06):
Oh, I definitely will.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
All right, So.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
My last question here, with the draft looming ever closer,
let us pretend for a moment that I'm an NHL
executive and I asked you in an interview to describe
if I select you exactly what kind of player slash
person am I gonna get.

Speaker 5 (14:29):
Yeah, you'll get a competitive player and person I gotta
we'll come to the rink and do everything in the
power to win and just wants to win in general.

Speaker 6 (14:40):
Just we'll do it his whole part, just to get
w for the team.

Speaker 5 (14:44):
And whether that's blocking shots or being an offensive guy,
being defensive, whatever it takes.

Speaker 6 (14:51):
You know, some people have roles, and I'll embrace my role.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Awesome, I like it. My last question for you, cam
and and what advice would you give the guys coming
up behind you that are looking to be in the
spot where you are right now?

Speaker 6 (15:10):
Just have fun. Hockey's fun.

Speaker 5 (15:12):
And you know, if you don't have fun, yeah, it's
not it's not gonna be an enjoy enjoyable experience.

Speaker 6 (15:20):
You gotta enjoy the experience and the journey, and.

Speaker 5 (15:23):
It's it's always just fun playing hockey, and you know,
just living life in general, it's always great. So have
fun whatever you do. It doesn't even have to be hockey.
It could be whatever you do in life.

Speaker 6 (15:33):
Just have fun.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
There you go, man, pretty sound advice. What do you think, Lance?

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (15:39):
Man, I mean still, I love this guy's game. I
think it's gonna take him quite far. And uh, you know,
I can't wait to watch the rest of the season
and then beyond that and where this guy, you know,
it goes from here via the NHL draft and everything

(15:59):
else us you know, I just see teams sleeping on
him right now, or at least the draft experts who
make up all these mock drafts. I think he's going
to surprise quite a few people when he gets his chance.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
I think so too, And I think that's Karen. That's
one of the reasons why we wanted to have you
on the show here man, because we really really do
love your game. Like Land said, he's an ex ex goalie,
you know, lifer, you know, and we love plus defensive
players that play defense first but can can chip in
on the offense when needed to. And that's exactly the

(16:33):
type of game that you play, and that's one of
the reasons why we wanted to have you on the
show here Man. So thank you very much for being
on the show. And also big props and thanks to
all the folks there at the Rangers for getting this
all set up for us. Man, big props and kudos
to you guys. Thank you very much.

Speaker 5 (16:50):
Awesome, awesome, thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (16:52):

you do, my man.
