Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm a fan of hyperrealism, meaning do everything you can
to have as clear a picture of the world as
possible and then utilize that for decision making to move forward.
And most people look at the ego as one issue,
(00:20):
and they always think of the ego as something that
is too high and needs to be tamped down. They
look at confidence and they perceive it always as this
thing of like it's generally going to be too low
and we need to build it up. But the thing
is is that confidence comes from the ego. It just
comes from an ego that is in line with reality.
(00:45):
If you feel pride in your accomplishments and they are
the correct accomplishments for the next step that you want
to take in your life, then you will feel excited
to take the next step. But if you feel pride
in one set of accomplishments and you don't feel pride
in another set, which is the place where you're trying
(01:06):
to move forward, then you're going to have what we
call low confidence, and you're going to have what we
call an inflated ego, where yes, you possess confidence somewhere,
but that confidence is actually not helping you. It's making
you feel like you should be in a different place,
(01:28):
and so the solution for this is to be realistic.
This comes down to a rant I have on humility,
which is, I don't think that most people understand what
humility really is. Most people perceive humility as to lower
yourself in the sense of like like look like, don't
(01:49):
get a big head, understand that you aren't that great,
so on and so forth. But the word humble comes
from the word ground, and I think a lot of
people translate that as close to the ground, but I
think it means more like ground did connected to the ground,
(02:09):
which is again realistic, and so true humility is to
understand that you are a speck of dust in the
universe and you're barely anything in the grand scheme of things.
And also there are bigger specs and smaller specs, and
(02:30):
you are not the smallest one, and so your accomplishments
are valid and you're not as big as you think
you are. And that statement, even in and of itself,
is problematic because like, let's really just figure out how
big you are. And the moment a person understands how
(02:54):
big they really are, they have the data they need
to move forward. When you truly understand exactly what you
are afraid of, you suddenly have the capacity to deal
with that fear. When you understand exactly what your skill
sets are, you know how to implement those skill sets
(03:14):
to move your life forward. But if you don't know
what they are and you have the misplaced then it's
going to be problematic. Your current view of what you
need to do is too big, and the too big
is called perfect, right, Perfect is a huge is a
(03:36):
massive accomplishment. The way people perceive the concept of perfect
is as a massive accomplishment, and so of course it's overwhelming,
and of course you're going to procrastinate. And then when
you think about making it smaller, of course you think
of all the downsides, like basically making it less perfect.
(03:59):
You think about all of the ways in which your
audience might perceive you, how you would be disappointed in yourself,
and ultimately it wouldn't get the result that you want,
which ultimately means it's boring. I mean, it might be
shameful and devastating as well, but it's moving towards nothingness.
And so how do you solve this? Well, you have
(04:21):
to learn how to take a meaningful step that is
worth taking that is possible to take. It has to
be something that you want, that is small enough that
you could achieve it, that if you did achieve it,
you would be happy about it. Right, fundamentally, this is
(04:44):
what we're trying to do, and when people don't move,
they struggle with that set of things. The way I
like to say the cycle is people need to know,
figure out what to do, feel like it's worth doing,
know that they can do it, and then do it.
These are the things that they need. If you'd like
