Speaker 1 (00:00):
Everyone, thank you for coming and listening. Today's Bible character
recording is on Caleb and his daughter. I hope you
guys really enjoy it. I enjoyed studying for it. I
enjoy both of these quite a bit. So let's start
with prayer. Heavenly Father, thank you so much for the
(00:22):
day that you have made. We will rejoice and be
glad in it. Lord, thank you so much, Holy Spirit.
I invite you, I request Lord, that you bring wisdom
and revelation and the knowledge of God, and minister to
each person who listens. In the name of Jesus, Holy Spirit.
I ask you to give me what to say as
(00:42):
my helper in Jesus' name. Amen. So, Caleb was one
of the twelve spies in the Old Testament, sent into
the Promised Land ahead of the children of Israel. So
let's start with numbers thirteen, verses one and two. Then
(01:04):
the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, send out men for
yourself to spy out the land of Canaan, which I'm
going to give the sons of Israel. You shall send
a man from each of their father's tribes, everyone a
leader among them. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones
(01:24):
who walked by faith in God's word of all of these.
So there were twelve tribes of Israel, so selecting a
man from each of the Father's tribes would mean twelve spies. Obviously, again,
the Bible directly states everyone was a leader among the
tribe that they were from. Okay, so Caleb put God's
(01:49):
word in his mouth. You'll see that in this next part,
which is from numbers thirteen, so same chapter, but later,
starting with verse fifteen. When they returned from spying out
the land at the end of the forty days, they
went on and came to Moses and Aaron and to
(02:10):
all the congregation of the sons of Israel in the
wilderness of Paran at Kadesh. And they brought that word
to them and to all the congregation, and showed them
the fruit of the land. So they reported to him,
meaning Moses, and said, we came into the land where
you sent us, and it certainly does flow with milk
(02:32):
and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless, the people
who live in the land are strong, and the cities
are fortified and very large. And indeed we saw the
descendants of Anak there amelek Is living in the land
of the Negev. The Hittites, the Jejesuzites, and the Amorites
(02:57):
are living in the hill country, and the cas are
living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.
So basically, they were mixing in a little bit of
doubt at first, a little bit of bad news, a
(03:19):
little bit of we're not so sure we can do
it attitude in with the factual information. See you see
them saying, this group is here, this group is there,
all types of tactical information needed for battle and strategy
(03:39):
for taking possession of the promised land. However, right in
there is and indeed we saw the descendants of Anak
their exclamation point. So it's just a little bit put in.
That's not let's do this. We can do all things
(04:02):
because of the Lord, our God. Okay, all things that
he commanded us and promised us. Okay, let's get back
to the text. Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses
and said, we should, by all means go up and
take possession of it, for we will certainly prevail over it.
(04:27):
But the men who had gone up with him said, now,
now we hear it. Right now, we get down to it.
But the men who had gone up with him, said,
we are not able to go up against the people
because they are too strong for us. Now their true
sentiments come out. So so, returning to the text, the
(04:48):
Bible says, so they brought a bad report of the
land which they had spied out to the sons of Israel, saying,
the land through which we have gone to spy out
is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the
people whom we saw in it are people of great stature.
(05:10):
We also saw on the Nephilum there the sons of
Anak are part of the Nephilum, and we were like
grasshoppers in our own site, and so we were in
their site. Obviously, they hadn't the faintest idea how they
were in the sight of these people. They were imagining
at this point. They were declaring their own imaginations at
(05:31):
this point. So now, if you look back earlier up
in the text, it says it certainly does flow with
milk and honey. Then we get down to it's a
land that devours its inhabitants. You see the spiral, and
(05:53):
I'm sure you've encountered people like this in your life,
where they're facade of optimism only lasts so long, and
they're not really they're not really choosing to take God
at his word. Okay, let's go to numbers fourteen, because
(06:18):
the great news is that the way the situation ended
up is that Caleb did take possession of his portion
of the land. This is a wild man, ladies and gentlemen, Okay,
numbers chapter fourteen. Then all the congregation raised their voices
and cried out, and the people wept that night, good mess.
(06:46):
And all the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron,
and the entire congregation said to them, if only we
had died in the land of Egypt, or even if
we had died in this wilderness. So they want to
die now, well, that can be accommodated, That can be
(07:06):
fulfilled verse three. So why is the Lord bringing us
into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives
and our little ones will become plunder. Would it not
be better for us to return to Egypt. So now
we're getting to the real plan here. So they said
to one another, let's appoint a leader and return to
(07:28):
Egypt literally literally, And have you ever encountered that sort
of person that they don't want to be successful. They
don't want to overcome. They don't want to face and
overcome risks and go through things where the outcome is
(07:50):
not predetermined and they have to actually extend themselves. Have
you ever encountered somebody who doesn't want to serve another
They don't want any part of the extra mile, as
it's called. Okay verse five. Then Moses and Aaron fell
on their faces, and the presence of all the assembly
(08:13):
of the Congregation of the Sons of Israel, and Joshua
the son of Nun and Caleb, the son of Jefffuna,
of those who had spied out the land tore their clothes,
and they spoke to all the congregation. That was, if
you don't know, that was very dramatic. Back when the
clothes were not just to be had for five or
(08:34):
ten dollars off the rack someplace that you drive fifteen
minutes away to get to. This tearing one's clothes was
a major statement when they did it Okay verse seven.
And they spoke to all the congregation of the Sons
of Israel, saying, the land which we passed through to
spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord
(08:58):
is pleased with us, then he will bring us into
this land and give it to us, a land which
flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against
the Lord, and do not fear the people of the land,
for they will be our prey. Their protection is gone
from them, and the Lord is with us. Do not
fear them. But all the congregation said to stone them
(09:23):
with stones. These people were out of their minds, think
COVID nineteen vaccine pushers okay, verse ten. But all the
congregations said to stone them with stones. Then the glory
of the Lord appeared in the tentive meeting to all
the sons of Israel. And the Lord said to Moses,
(09:46):
how long will this people be disrespectful to me? And
how long will they not believe in me? Despite all
the signs that I have performed in their midst I
will strike them with plague and dispossess them, and I
will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they.
But Moses said to the Lord, Then the Egyptians, this
is an interesting delivery. This is an interesting style of intercession.
(10:10):
I am less familiar with this, but my eyes and
ears are open uh Verse thirteen. But Moses said to
the Lord, then the Egyptians will hear of it, for
by your strength you brought this people up from their midst,
and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land.
They have heard that you, Lord, are in the midst
of this people, because you, Lord, are seen eye to eye,
(10:33):
while your cloud stands over them, and you go before
them in a pillar of cloud by day and in
a pillar of fire by night. Now, if you put
this people to death all at once, then the nations
who have heard of your fame will say, since the
Lord could not bring this people into the land which
he promised them by oath, he slaughtered them in the wilderness.
(10:53):
So now please let the power of the Lord be great,
just as you have declared, saying, the Lord is slow
to anger, We're an abundant in mercy. Now there there
we go. That's the word right there, Bring back the
promises Verse eighteen. The Lord is slow to anger and
abundant in mercy forgiving wrongdoing and violation of his law,
(11:14):
but he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished,
inflicting the punishment of the fathers on the children. To
the third and fourth generations. Please forget the guilt of
this people and accordance with the greatness of your mercy,
just as you also have forgiven this people from Egypt
until now. WHOA, that's intense. Talk about living in the
(11:38):
moment glory to God. Okay, verse twenty So the Lord said,
I have forgiven them in accordance with your word. However,
as I live, all the earth will be filled with
the glory of the Lord. HM. That reminds me of
Joel chapter two, where the Lord said he will pour
(11:58):
out his spirit on all flows. And I believe I'm
living in those times now verse twenty two. Certainly all
the people who have seen my glory and my signs
which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet
have put me to the test these ten times, and
if not listened to my voice, that would be interesting,
(12:20):
right to make a list of the ten times, just
to see what disrespect looks like to God, because I
think that, well, let me do this while I'm doing it,
But that's an interesting idea to list those ten times
and see see what disrespect looks like to God, because
(12:44):
I think it's different than what we imagine when we're
programmed to the system of this world or to religious customs.
Okay verse twenty two. Certainly, all the people who have
(13:05):
seen my glory in my signs which I performed in
Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put me to
the test these ten times and have not listened to
my voice, shall by no means see the land which
I swore to their fathers, Nor shall any of those
who were disrespectful to me see it. But as for
my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and
(13:27):
has followed me fully, I will bring him into the
land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession
of it. Now that Amalekites and Canaanites live in the valleys,
turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the
way of the Red Sea. The Lord spoke to Moses
and Aaron again, saying, how long shall I put up
(13:49):
with this evil congregation who are grumbling against me? I
have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel which
they are voicing against me. Wow, they had a progression,
and the Lord's come to their conversation. And the Lord's
conversation now has a progression too. Now, yeah, okay, Verse
(14:10):
twenty eight, say to them, as I live, declares the Lord,
just as you have spoken in my hearing. So I
will do to you now. I will take time to
point out here that this is an eternal word, and
we should still watch our mouths today, watch our tongues
(14:33):
and lips, to not transgress against even the promises of God,
which are so exceeding great and precious, To not stagger
at them, to not waiver through unbelief, not go back
and forth. That's like a whole other recording. I think
of a whole other anyway, Verse twenty nine. Your dead
(14:55):
bodies will fall in this wilderness. All your numbered men
according to you, complete number, from twenty years old and upward,
who have grumbled against me. By no means will you
come into the land where I swore to settle you,
except for Caleb, the son of Jeffunah, and Joshua, the
son of none, your children, however, whom you said would
become plunder. I will bring them in, and they will
(15:18):
know the land which you have rejected. Right. One minute, oh, certainly,
it's a land that flows with milk and honey. Next minute,
it's a land that devours its inhabitants. Okay, uh, verse
thirty two. But as for you, your dead bodies will
(15:39):
fall in this wilderness. Also, your sons will be shepherds
in the wilderness for forty years, and they will suffer
for your unfaithfulness, until your bodies perish in the wilderness,
in accordance with the number of days that you spied
out the land, forty days for every day you shall
suffer the punishment for your guilt a year that is
forty years. And you will know my opposition, I the
(16:02):
Lord have spoken. I certainly will do this to all
this evil congregation who are gathered together against me. They
shall be worn out in this wilderness, and there they
shall die. Do we do any of us know anyone
who threw their tongues through their mouths, through their lips
(16:25):
came to be worn out in the wilderness that they
entered into, experienced, and then died thereof sobering. As for
the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land,
and who returned and led all the congregation, ooh yeah,
(16:45):
I'm going to mention that before I get to verse
thirty six. Right now, when this recording is being made,
we're on the advent of a lot of acceleration and
deployment of artificial intelligence. And I would like to warn
any one who's listening to this recording against speaking negatively
concerning your future or your prospects with the advent of
(17:08):
AI to I want to warn you against talking as
though you or others won't have a job or there
won't be opportunities. Do not speak negatively about the future.
If you've got the faith to be optimistic and position yourself,
(17:34):
prime yourself to recognize and take advantage of opportunities, great
order your conversation accordingly. If all you can do is
simply take out it as a word and say things
like the Lord has plans to prosper me, to give
me hope in a future, then just stick to what
the Bible says. But you need to avoid cur yourself
(18:01):
cursing your future by negative words, negative conversations, dismal outlook,
despairing mentality. Don't go there. It's not that there won't
be jobs, it's not that there won't be opportunities, But
you don't want to condition yourself for negative experiences, negative outlooks,
(18:25):
and negative outcomes with this type of spiritual blindness that
was exhibited in this story from the Old Testament. These
events from the Old Testament. So that's my little side thing.
Let me get back to the text verse thirty six
of numbers fourteen. As for the men whom Moses sent
(18:46):
out to spy out the land, and who returned and
led all the congregation to grumble against him by bringing
a bad report about the land, those men who brought
the bad report of the land also died by a
play in the presence of the Lord. But Joshua, the
son of nun and Caleb, the son of Jeffunah remained
(19:09):
alive out of those men who went out to spy
out the land, triple say lah. Now, when Moses spoke
these words to all the sons of Israel, the people
mourned greatly. In the morning, however, they got up early
and went to the ridge of the hill country, saying,
(19:30):
here we are, and we will go up to the
place which the Lord has promised, for we've sinned. Ever
met anybody like that? Oh, I'll just confess it. I'll
just repent. But Moses said, why then are you violating
the command of the Lord when doing so will not succeed.
Do not go up, for the Lord is not among you.
To prevent you from being defeated by your enemies, for
(19:52):
the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there to confront you,
and you will fall by the sword, since you have
turned back from following, and the Lord will not be
with you. But they foolishly dared to go up to
the ridge of the hill country. Neither the ark of
the Covenant of the Lord nor Moses left the camp.
Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill
(20:14):
country came down and struck and scattered them as far
as Horma. Wow, there's the story for you. Huh okay uh. Yeah,
there was an outcome to the declarations that they made.
Let's look at numbers thirty two, verses eleven through thirteen.
(20:35):
None of the men who came up from Egypt from
twenty years old and upwards shall see the land which
I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, For
they did not follow me fully, except Caleb the son
of Jeffunah the Kennesite, and Joshua, the son of nun
For they have followed the Lord fully. At this point,
(20:56):
all they're doing is agreeing with God and being prepared
to act in faith and not caving to the crowd,
even when Remember, the people were ready to stone Moses
and maybe Caleb and Joshua I forgot that detail, but
(21:19):
they were ready to like bring some lethal force to
get their way. Okay, back to the text. So the
Lord's anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander
in the wilderness for forty years until the entire generation
of those who had done evil in the sight of
the Lord came to an end. I wanted to talk
(21:41):
about Joshua's investment in prioritizing spending time with God privately.
That's it from Exodus thirty three to eleven. I'll just
read that verse. It says, so the Lord used to
speak to Moses face to face, just as a man
speaks to his friend. When Moses returned to the camp,
(22:02):
his servant, Joshua, the son of Nune, a young man,
would not depart from the tent. Isn't that powerful? So
his investment in prioritizing spending time privately with God showed
up in his ability to stand against the unbelief of
the crowd and have loyalty to the promises of God. Now,
(22:25):
calebs came from having a different spirit. So let's look
at that verse again, numbers fourteen twenty four. But as
for my servant Caleb, because he has had a different
spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring him
into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall
take possession of it. You know, as far as I know,
(22:48):
the specific land that Caleb claimed and an acquired for
him and his family, it is still in possession of
Israel to day. As I understand. It wasn't any of
the land that they were bullied by the United States
and other countries into giving up. Okay, let's look at yeah.
(23:13):
I wanted to mention actually that if you haven't even
had the chance to invest spending time privately with God
through your life, you can ask Him to give you
a different spirit than the crowd to help you to
be loyal toward His word. So I'll just leave that
there for you, you and God to sort out. I
(23:35):
wanted to. I really noticed Caleb's age was eighty five
years old. He was as strong for war and daily
adventures as when he was forty that I wanted to
read that passage. And by the way, the land wasn't
given to him in the sense that we might think
(23:58):
of it where someone else went in and conquered it
and then, excuse me, gave him some type of deed
or something like. Okay, just walk over there. Now. It
wasn't like that. When it was time, he still had
to remind Joshua, and he go before him and remind
(24:22):
him and have his facts in order, and then he
still had to go and fight the Anakin and drive
them out. It's wonderful, It's wonderful. I love this story, okay,
So Joshua fourteen, starting with verse six, Then the sons
of Judah approached Joshua, and Gilgal and Caleb, the son
of Jeffunah Kennzite, said to him, you know the word
(24:47):
which the Lord spoke to Moses, the man of God,
on account of you and me and katish Barnea. I
was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord,
sent me from katush Barnea to spy out the land,
and I brought word back to him as it was
in my heart. Nevertheless, my brothers who went up with me,
made the heart of the people melt with fear. But
(25:09):
I followed the Lord my God fully. So Moses swore
on that day saying, the land on which your foot
has walked shall certainly be an inheritance to you and
to your children forever, because you have followed the Lord
my God fully. And now behold, the Lord has let
me live just as he spoke these forty five years
(25:30):
from the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses,
when Israel walked in the wilderness. And now behold, I
am eighty five years old today. I am still as
strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me,
as my strength was then. So my strength is now
for war and for going out and coming in. Now,
then give me this hill country about which the Lord
(25:53):
spoke on that day. For you heard on that day
that the Anakin were there with great fortified cities. Perhaps
the Lord will be with me, and I will drive
them out, just as the Lord has spoken. So Joshua
blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of
Jeffunah as an inheritance. Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of
(26:18):
Caleb the son of Jeffunah, the Kenna Zeite to this day,
because he followed the Lord God of Israel fully. Now
the name of Hebron was previously kuriath Arba, for Arba
was the greatest man among the Anakin. Then the land
was at rest for war. So Caleb drove out all
(26:39):
who were standing in the way of his promise from God.
He did a complete work. Let's look at that in
Joshua fifteen, verses thirteen through fifteen. Now he gave to Caleb,
the son of Jeffunah, a portion among the sons of Judah,
according with the command of the Lord to Joshua, namely
(27:01):
kiriof Arba Arba, being the father of Anak, that is Hebron.
That's the location. And Caleb drove out from there the
three sons of Anax, Shahet, Ahiman, and Talmay, the children
of Anak. Then he went up from there against the
inhabitants of Debir. Now the name of Debir previously was
(27:23):
kirriof suffer. So now we have an interesting development. So Caleb,
with his big personality and what he had, what he
had in his heart and in his mind, what he
(27:44):
had is a purpose. He had a daughter named ah Sah.
So ah Sah, Yeah, I'm just going to read this
to you, okay. So basically Ahsa got promised as a
reward for wartime conquest. But she had an admirer, and
(28:07):
in my opinion, in my opinion, it was a good
way to create opportunity for a man to earn that
place with a woman who, no doubt was already showing
signs of her strong personality. So after Othl, her cousin,
got her for his wife, she still got him to
(28:31):
do what she wanted to create the life that she
was looking for, and it worked, and so then she
started making her own negotiations. Anyway, let me read. Let
me read from Judges chapter one. Then from there he
went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir
(28:52):
was previously kuriof Sepher, and Caleb said, whoever attacks kuriaf
Sepher and captures it, I will give him my daughter
Ahsa as a wife. Now Othniel, the son of Kenaz,
Caleb's younger brother, captured it, so he gave him his
daughter Asa as a wife. Can you imagine how colorful
(29:18):
these people must have been, like larger than life in
their time? Surely Okay, Then it happened that when she
came to him Afiel, that is her Athniel, her cousin
now her husband. When she came to him, she incited
him to ask her father for a field. There's so
(29:40):
much in that. There's so much in that anyway, okay,
so you should make a movie. Okay. So she incited
him to ask her father for a field. Then later
she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her,
what do you want? Ha can't you hear like years
(30:02):
of interactions in that question. Okay, She said to him,
give me a blessing. Since you've given me the land
of the Negev, give me springs of water also, So
Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
So she had figured out by the time she dismounted
from her donkey, as it says about irrigation. But Caleb
was the one who really knew what would be a blessing,
and so he gave not according to but anyway, he
gave according to his understanding and not her level of understanding.
So I thought that was really really cool and showed
(30:41):
their relationships so beautifully and in so much color, so interestingly,
And I wanted to mention that empowerment for women is
obviously not loose morals and the Lord's kingdom.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
God's kingdom is where women are empowered. Even in the
Old Testament, there was a particular passage that I really
like from numbers twenty seven that i'll read on, and
i'll also mention job who is an Old Testament believer
in the Lord. Okay, numbers twenty seven, starting with verse one,
Then the daughters of Zilofah had the son of Heffer,
(31:17):
the son of Gilead, the son of Maher, the son
of Manassa, of the families of Manassa, the son of Joseph,
came forward. These are the names of his daughters, Mala, Noah, Hagla, Milka,
and Terza. They stood before Moses, before Eliezar the priest,
before the leaders, and all the congregation at the entrance
(31:38):
of the tentive meeting. Boy, don't you know some conversations
went into that before they went forward, right, okay, saying,
our father died in the wilderness. Yet he was not
among the group of those who gathered together against the Lord,
in the group of Cora. But he died in his
own sin, and he had no sons. Why should the
(31:59):
name of our father be withdrawn from among his family?
Simply because he had no son, give us property among
our father's brothers. So Moses brought their case before the Lord.
Then the Lord said to Moses, the daughters of Zelophah
had are right about their statements. You shall certainly give
(32:21):
them hereditary property among their father's brothers, and you shall
transfer the inheritance of their father to them. Further, you
shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, if a
man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer
his inheritance to his daughter. And Job that like. One
(32:43):
of the very last statements in the book of Job,
is about how Job left an inheritance to his daughters
as well. So this is from Job chapter forty two,
verses thirteen through fifteen. He also had seven sons and
three daughters. He named their Jemima, the second Keziah, and
(33:03):
the third Karen Hapooch. In all the land, no women
were found as beautiful as Job's daughters, and their father
gave them inheritances among their brothers, which is so beautiful
and fun and interesting. So I hope that this is
very inspiring to you as far as bravery and conquest
(33:26):
and stepping out and acting on the word of the Lord.
So Actually, let's close with a brief prayer. Heavenly Father,
I pray that you minister to every person who listens
to this, and that the plan of God becomes more
clear to them. And I pray that they would make
the time and effort to repent for negative mindsets, negative words,
(33:48):
and get those cleared up. Father, get those cleared out
of the way so they can go forward with the
hope in future you have for them in Jesus' name. Amen,
God bless you guys. Thanks for joining me. Hie
