Speaker 1 (00:02):
Okay, thank you everyone for joining. I appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Glad to be here with you once again. Okay, here
we go, get my notes up. This Bible character study
(00:42):
is on Jesse, and really Jesse and his family. He's
the father of King David, who is king over Israel
very many years ago. And let's open with prayer, heaving
you Father, thank you for your word. God.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
I pray for your spirit to bring us wisdom and
revelation in the knowledge of you.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I pray Father that the hope that's held out in
the Gospel Lord is perceived and received and experienced by
the people who are listening.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
In Jesus' name.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Amen, I thank God for you, and I'm glad to
be here. Let's get started in for Samuel chapters sixteen
and seventeen. Now, this is kind of a lot of
Bible reading, but it's an interesting story, so I think
you'll enjoy it. For Samuel sixteen, now, the Lord said
(01:43):
to Samuel, how long are you going to mourn for
Saul since I have rejected him from being king over Israel.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Fill your horn with oil and go.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I will send you to Jesse the Bethelmite, because I
have chosen a king for myself among his sons.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
But Samuel said, how can I go. When Saul hears
about it, he will kill me.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
But the Lord said, take a huffer with you and say,
I've come to sacrifice to the Lord, and you shall
invite Jesse to the sacrifice. And I will let you
know what you shall do, and you shall anoint for
me the one whom I designate to you. So Samuel
did what the Lord told him, and he came to Bethlehem.
(02:24):
Men the elders of the city came trembling to meet
him and said, do you come in peace? And he said,
in peace, I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. He
also consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to
the sacrifice. When they entered, he looked to Eliah and thought,
(02:47):
surely the Lord's anointed is before him. But the Lord
said to Samuel, do not look at his appearance or
at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him.
For the God does not see as man sees, since
man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks
at the heart.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Before Samuel, but he said, the Lord has not chosen
this one either. Next, Jesse had Shama pass by, and
he said, the Lord has not chosen this one either.
So Jesse had seven of his sons passed before Samuel,
but Samuel said to Jesse, the Lord has not chosen these.
Then Samuel said to Jesse, are these all the boys?
(03:27):
And he said the youngest is still left. But behold,
he is tending the sheep. So Samuel said to Jesse,
send word and bring him, for we will not take
our places at the table until.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
He comes here. So he's wow.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
I just realized how much that represented in the family dynamics.
I've been looking into this to prepare to study for
my discussion, and that bit of revelation just hit me.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Okay, verse twelve. So he sent word and brought him in.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Now he was reddish, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance,
and the Lord said, arise, anoint him, for this is he.
So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him
in the midst of his brothers, and the spirit of
the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward, and
Samuel set out and went to Rama. Now the spirit
(04:27):
of the Lord left Saul, and an evil spirit terrified him.
Saul's servants then said to him, behold, now an evil
spirit from God is terrifying you.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
May our Lord.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Now command your servants who are before you. Have them
search for a man who was a skillful musician on
the harp, and it shall come about whenever the evil
spirit of God is upon you, that he shall play
the harp with his hand, and you will become well.
I think a lot of instances are represented by that suggestion,
(05:06):
that there was a lot of events that preceded them.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Being willing to bring this up to him. Okay, verse seventeen.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
So Saul said to his servants, now select for me
a man who can play well, and bring him to me.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Then one of the young men responded.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
And said, behold, I have seen a son of Jesse
the Bethlemite, who is a skillful musician, a valiant, mighty man,
a warrior, skillful in speech, and a handsome man.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
And the Lord is with him.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
You know. It's interesting and seeing there in this regular
person's description of David, that while he was treated the
way he was within his own family, he was quite impressive.
In other circles, he was considered quite impressive. The the
(06:06):
emphasis was put on his older brothers and their impressive appearance,
and his own family. But I see the way that
someone outside the family saw him.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
This is what it says. I'm going to read verse
eighteen again.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Then one of the young men responded and said, behold,
I have seen a son of Jesse, the Bethlelmite, who
was a skillful musician, a valiant, mighty man, a warrior,
skillful in speech, and a handsome man. And the Lord
is with him. So Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say,
(06:44):
send me your son David, who was with the flock,
and Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread and a
jug of wine, and he took a young goat and
sent them to Saul by his son David. Then David
came to Saul and attended him, and Saul greatly loved him,
and he became.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
His armor bearer.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Actually, I'm realizing the translator inserted the words Saul. There.
Let me read it without what the translators inserted. The
translation i'm reading has those words in italics. I'm gonna
go over verse twenty one again. Then David came to
Saul and attended him and greatly loved him.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
And he became his armor bearer.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
So Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, let David now
be my attendant, for he has found favor in my sight.
So it came about whenever the spirit from God came
to Saul, David would play the heart and play it
with his hand, and Saul would feel relieved and become well,
(07:57):
and the evil spirit would leave him. Now, the Philistines
gathered their armies for battle, and they were gathered at Soko,
which belongs to Judah, and they camped between Soko and
Azeka in Efez Damen. Saul and the men of Israel
(08:19):
were assembled encamped in the valley of Elah, and they
drew up in battle formation to confront the Philistines.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
The Philistines were.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Standing on the mountain on one side, while Israel was
standing on the mountain on the other side, with the
valley between them.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Then a champion came forward from the.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Army encampment of the Philistines, named Goliath from Ghath. His
height was six cubits and a span, and he had
a bronze helmet on his head, and he wore scale armor,
which weighed five thousand shekels of bronze. He also had
bronze greaves on his legs and a bronze saber slung
(09:01):
between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like
a weaver's beam, and the head of his spear weighed
six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield carrier walked
in front of him. He stood and shouted to the
ranks of Israel and said to them, why do you
come out to draw up.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
In battle formation? Am I not the Philistine in you?
Speaker 2 (09:24):
The servants of Saul, choose a man as your representative,
and have him come.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Down to me. If he is able to fight me
and kill me, then we will become your servants.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
But if I prevail against him and kill him, then
you shall become our servants and serve us. Then the
Philistine said, I have defied the ranks of Israel this day.
Give me a man so that we may fight together.
When Saul and all Israel heard the words these words
of the Philistine, they were dismayed and very fearful. Now
(09:57):
David was the son of the Afrithe of Bethlehem and Judah,
the man whose name was Jesse, and he had eight sons.
And Jesse was old in the days of Saul, advanced
in years among men. The three older sons of Jesse
had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of
his three sons who had gone into the battle were Elief,
(10:20):
the first born, and second to him of benedab in
the third Shama. So David was the youngest. Now the
three oldest followed Saul.
Speaker 1 (10:29):
But David went.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Back and forth from Saul to tend his father's flock
at Bethlehem. And the Philistine came forward morning and evening
and took his stand. Forty days Then Jesse said to
his son David, take now for your brothers, and fhat
of this roasted grain and these ten loaves, and run
to the camp to your brothers. Bring also these ten
(10:52):
slices of cheese to the commander of their thousand, and
look into the well being of your brother, and bring
back confirmation from them, for Saul and they and all
the men of Israel are in the valley of.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
Elah fighting the Philistines.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
So David got up early in the morning and left
the flock with a keeper, and took the supplies and
went as Jesse had commanded him, and he came to
the entrenchment encircling the camp, while the army was going
out in battle formation, shouting the war cry Israel, and
the Philistines drew up in battle formation, army against army.
(11:35):
Then David left the baggage in the care of the
baggage keeper and ran to the battle line.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
And he entered and greeted his brothers.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
As he was speaking with them, Behold, the champion, the
Philistine from Gath named Goliath, was coming up from the
army of the Philistines, and he spoke the same words.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
And David heard.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
When all the men of Israel saw the man, they
fled from him and were very fearful. And the men
of Israel said, have you seen this man who was
coming up? Surely he is coming to defy Israel. And
it will be that the King will make the man
who kills him wealthy with great riches, and will give
him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel.
(12:22):
Then David said to the men who were standing by him,
what will be done.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
For the man who kills this philistine and rids Israel
the disgrace?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
For who is this uncircumcised philistine, that he has dared
to defy the armies of the living God.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
The people answered him in agreement with.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
This statement, saying, this is what will be done for
the man who kills him. Now. Elieb, his oldest brother,
heard when he spoke to the men, and Elieb's anger
burned against David, and he said, why is it that
you have come down? And with whom have you left
those few sheep in the wilderness. I myself know your
(13:01):
insolence and the wickedness of your heart, for you've come
down in order to see the battle.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
But David said, what have I done? Now? Was it
not a question?
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Then he turned away from him to another and said
the same thing, And the people replied with the same
words as before. That's three times okay, moviegun verse thirty one.
When the words that David spoke were heard, they informed Saul,
and he sent for him.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
And David said to Saul, may no one's.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
Heart fail on account of him, Your servant will go
and fight this philistine. But Saul said to David, you
are not able to go against this philistine to fight him,
for you are only a youth, and he has been
a warrior since his youth. But David said to Saul,
your servant was tending his father's sheep when a lion
or a bear.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
Came and took a sheep from the flock.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
I went after it and attacked it, and rescued the
sheep from its mouth. When it rose up against me,
I grabbed it by its mane and struck it and
killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and
the bear, and this uncircumcised philistine will be like one
of them, since he has defied the armies of the
Living God. And David said, the Lord who saved me
(14:14):
from the paw of the lion and the paw of
the bear, he will save me from the hand of
this philistine. So Saul said to David, go and may
the Lord be with you. Then Saul clothed David with
his military attire and put a bronze helmet on his head,
and outfitted him with armor. And David strapped on his
sword over his military attire and struggled at walking, for
(14:36):
he had not trained with the armor. So David said
to Saul, I cannot go with these because I have
not trained with them. And David took them off. Then
he took his staff in his hand and chose for
himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them
in the shepherd's bag which he had, that is in
his shepherd's pouch. And his sling was in his hand,
(14:57):
and he approached the Philistine. Then the Philistine came and
approached David with the shield bearer in front of him.
When the Philistine looked and saw David, he was contemptuous
of him, for he was only a youth and reddish,
with a handsome appearance. So the Philistine said to David,
am I a dog that you come to me with sticks?
(15:19):
And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. The Philistine
also said to David, come to me, and I will
give your flesh to the birds of the sky and
the wild animal. But David said to the Philistine, you
come to me with a sword, a spear and a saber.
But I come to you in the name of the
Lord of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel,
(15:42):
whom you have defied this day. The Lord will hand
you over to me, and I will strike you and
remove your head from you. Then I will give the
dead bodies of the army of the Philistines this day
to the birds of the sky and the wild animals
of the earth, so that all the earth may know
that there is a God in Israel, and that this
(16:02):
entire assembly may know that the Lord does not say
by sword or by spear, For the battle is the Lord's.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
And he will hand you over to us. That is
so cool.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
He was checking out what arms the Philistine had, okay,
verse forty eight. Then it happened when the Philistine came
closer to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the
battle line to meet the Philistine. And David put his
hand into his bag and took from it a stone
and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead,
(16:36):
and the stone penetrated his forehead, and he fell on
his face to the ground. So David prevailed over the
Philistine with the sling in the stone, he struck the
Philistine and killed him.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
And there was no sword in David's hand.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
When David ran and stood over the Philistine and took
his sword and drew it out of his sheath and
finished him, and caught off his head with it.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Oh let me. Then David ran and stood over.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
The Philistine and took his sword and took it out
of the chief and finished him and cut off his
head with it. When the Philistines saw their champion was dead,
they fled. Then the men of Israel and Judah rose
up and shouted, and they pursued the Philistines as far
as the valley and to the gates of Ekron. And
the Philistine dead lay all the way to Schahrain, even
(17:27):
to Gaff and Ekron. Then the sons of Israel returned
from their close pursuit of the Philistines and plundered their camps.
And David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem.
But he put his weapons in his tent. Now, when
Saul had seen David go out against the Philistine, he
(17:48):
said to Abner, the commander of the army, Abner, whose
son is this young man? And Abner said, by your life,
O King, I do not know.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
And the King.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Said, whose son this youth is? So when David returned
from the killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought
him before Saul, with the Philistine's head in his hand.
Then Saul said to him, whose son are you, young man?
And David answered, the son of your servant, Jesse the Bethlemite.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
Isn't that interesting?
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Sorry, definitely glad to read that and refresh myself on
the details. It's a timeless to remember how God saves
people who trust in him.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Okay, I want to just briefly mention it's.
Speaker 2 (18:48):
A possibility that David was conceived through an affair. Psalm
fifty one point five says, behold, I was brought forth
in guilt and in sin.
Speaker 1 (19:01):
My mother conceived me. And that is.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Something that David wrote Psalms sixty nine to eight. I've
become estranged from my brothers and a stranger to my
mother's sons. Another translation says an alien to my mother's sons.
Another says a foreigner to my mother's sons. So both
of these being written by David. The songs were generally
(19:30):
written by him. These are statements that seem to indicate
that if he was, his distinctive features were constant reminder
of that. For Samuel sixteen twelve mentioned how he had
(19:53):
a ruddy appearance, beautiful eyes.
Speaker 1 (19:56):
There's different.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
His appearance was mentioned as distinctive a number of times
in different ways through those two chapters, and if so,
Jesse was likely.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Angry and embarrassed.
Speaker 2 (20:11):
It's obvious regardless of that, that Jesse wanted to be
known for his other impressive looking sons. And that's clear
for Samuel sixteen to ten.
Speaker 1 (20:27):
Where it says that he had seven of his.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Sons passed before Samuel. But remember, he didn't bring Jesse
didn't have excuse me, David. He didn't have David come
to be with everyone, to be with the group, even
though he had been told to bring his sons with him.
And I want to mention I found it interesting that
these older three fled from danger. The Bible tells us
(20:55):
that they were with the army, the rest of the
army that was fleeing from Goliath, and that Jesse hid them.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
From danger by bribing their commander.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
That's in for Samuel seventeen eighteen where it lists the
cheese and such that he sent to the commander of
the military group that they were in. And I find
it interesting how it's an illustration of how we as
(21:35):
humans sometimes sabotage the very thing that we're trying to do,
or the very thing that we want. We sometimes sabotage
with our own actions. I found that an interesting illustration
of that that he obviously wanted to be known for
(21:56):
these impressive looking sons of his, and yet when it
came down to it, he was not instilling in them
the qualities that were needed to be impressive. But as
you'll see, David got those qualities not from Jesse's training
and participation in his development. David got those qualities from
(22:21):
spending time with the Lord. Okay, let's keep going here.
The family dynamics, So regardless of all that, regardless of
whether David was conceived and an affair that his mother
had or not, regardless of that part, the family dynamics
were dysfunctional, painful, et cetera. Let's go over some detail
(22:46):
in one Samuel seventeen verses twenty eight through thirty.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
With let me see here.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Elie app his oldest brother, now elieb has a This
brother heard when he spoke to the men, and Eliev's
anger burned against David, and he said, why is it
that you have come down?
Speaker 1 (23:09):
And with whom have you left those few sheep in
the wilderness.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
I myself know your insolence and the wickedness of your heart,
for you have come down in order to see the
battle but David said, what have I done?
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Now? Was it not a question?
Speaker 2 (23:24):
And he turned away from him to another and said
the same thing, And the people replied with the same
words as before.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
There's so much in that, I mean a whole list.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
And if you come from painful family dynamics, especially the
type that are illustrated here, I think that you can
read into what they're saying even more than those of
us who are just seeing there's so much wrong with
(23:56):
this exchange.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Okay, let's get back to my notes here. David's banishment
from daily family life.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
And much of Jesse's direct involvement turned into a blessing
because David used the isolation as an opportunity of solitude
to spend.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
Time seeking God. So what.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Being tending the sheep meant was day after day he
was all day out in the fields from the family,
and his entire day was spent out there with them.
So I wanted to mention specifically that David would compose
(24:46):
songs and play them to God.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
That was a big part of.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
What his.
Speaker 1 (24:52):
Seeking of God looked like. He would meditate.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
When I say that, I do not mean Eastern mysticism,
I mean scripture based like think Jesus's meditations in Matthew
chapter six, where Jesus would meditate on truths about God.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
Right, he said to look.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
At the birds and how they don't sew or reap
or gather into barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them. Right,
Jesus was medit did that. Jesus was telling us to
do those meditations because those are meditations he did. And
so when he was sitting and thinking about how his
heavenly Father feeds these birds, that is something that is
(25:36):
an example.
Speaker 1 (25:37):
That's the type of meditation that David would have been doing.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Same thing with where Jesus said, you know, consider the
lilies of the field, they don't toil or spin. But Solomon,
in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
There would have been another the type of meditations that
David was doing out there in nature with the sheep
for hours on end, day after day.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
For years, and David became close to God.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
Let's look at first Samuel thirteen fourteen. Let me read
this for you just a moment, please, verse fourteen. But
now this is God speaking to Saul. But now your
kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has sought for himself
(26:31):
a man after his own heart, and the Lord has
appointed him ruler over his people because you have not
kept what the Lord commanded you.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Powerful. That's what God said about David.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Right, forget the young man who was consulted about someone
to play for Saul.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
That's what the Lord said about David.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
Okay I identified Goliath as uncircumcised, highlighting that the main
point is that Goliath wasn't in covenant with God. So
for the Israelites, for the Jews, the circumcision was a
sign in their bodies of being in covenant with God.
(27:17):
And when David identified him in this way, that was
highlighting that David understood that the main point of the
situation was that Goliath wasn't in covenant with God. Not
how much his shield or his sear or his helmet weighed,
but covenant with God or not. And this showed that
(27:41):
David understood the main emphasis with God is that he
keeps his word. So this is in for Samuel seventeen
twenty six.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
Let me read that again.
Speaker 2 (27:56):
Then David said to the men who were standing by him,
what will be done for the man who kills this
philistine and rids Israel of the disgraces, For who is
this uncircumcised philistine that he has dared to defy the
armies of the living God?
Speaker 1 (28:11):
Beautiful?
Speaker 2 (28:12):
Right?
Speaker 1 (28:13):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (28:15):
My observation is also that David had an escape from
the pain associated with daily family life, and redemption is
the result of investing in God.
Speaker 1 (28:27):
David became a conduit. In fact, David became the conduit
for human recognition for Jesse. If you remember.
Speaker 2 (28:37):
In both chapter sixteen and seventeen, this was illustrated. So
let's look at for Samuel sixteen nineteen through twenty two.
It says, so Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say,
send me your son David, who is with the flock.
(28:57):
And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread and a
jug of wine. He took a young goat and sent
him sent them to Saul by his son David. Then
David came to Saul and attended him and greatly loved him,
and he became.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
His armor bearer. So Saul sent word.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
To Jesse saying, let David now be my attendant, forri
has found favor in my sight. So it came about
whenever the spirit from God came to Saul. David would
take the harp and play it with his hand, and
Saul would feel relieved and become well, and the evil
spirit would leave him.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
And I note one of the.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
Things I noticed is that Jesse did not try to
develop the potential of that. So here David's the conduit
for the king's recognition to be introduced to Jesse, to
know his name, to hear of him, And instead of
(29:55):
developing the potential of that, instead of trying to turn
that into something, Jesse didn't respect what David was contributing
to the family. He didn't try to develop the potential
of the relationship that was beginning.
Speaker 1 (30:11):
Whatever was going on in this family was really toxic.
It was really messed up.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
And the Lord is the one who enabled David and
blessed him to be able to bring to Jesse the
very thing that Jesse desired.
Speaker 1 (30:35):
Jesse wanted recognition.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
Jesse wanted to advance in social status, but he hadn't
wanted it to happen through David, for whatever the reason.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
And when it.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Came through David, he didn't develop it.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
He didn't take advantage.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
Of it, so to speak, not in a wrong way,
but it could have benefited the entire family, and Saul
didn't even remember Jesse's role when David defeated Goliath.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
He didn't even remember that Jesse.
Speaker 2 (31:12):
He already knew Jesse was David's son, Jesse was David's father,
that he already knew the name of David's father, but
he had forgotten by then. Jesse didn't do anything with it.
There wasn't any development of the relationship. And by the
time the conflict with the Philistine came, King Saul's asking
(31:34):
whose son is this?
Speaker 1 (31:36):
Okay, let me.
Speaker 2 (31:39):
Let me get to First Samuel seventeen fifteen, because it
mentions specifically.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
What was going on with David.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
And now this is after David had the job as
King Saul's attended, it says in verse fifteen, but David
went back and fourth from Saul to tend his father's
flock at Bethlehem.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
That's why I say that Jesse had.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
No respect for what David was bringing to the family. Okay,
let's go to Oh yeah, I wanted to mention. It
was then First Samuel seventeen fifty five through fifty eight
that we see that Saul didn't even remember.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Let me get down to verse fifty five. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:29):
Now, when Saul had seen David going out against the Philistine,
he said to Abner, the commander of the army, Abner,
whose son is this young man? And Abner said, by
your life, oh King, I do not know. And the
king said, you ask whose son the youth is. So
when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him
(32:49):
and brought him before Saul, with the Philistine's head in
his hand. Then Saul said to him, whose son are you.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Young man?
Speaker 2 (32:56):
And David answered, the son of your servant, Jesse, the Flamight. Okay,
let's keep going here. I also wanted to point out
that David became the conduit for recognition from God for Jesse.
This is so powerful, not just the human king in
(33:18):
Jesse's life, not just the.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
Kind of highest status.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
Person in their society, in their community, in their in
their nation, but also now Jesse, Jesse has the opportunity
for favor and recognition before God through David.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
Because David and now Jesse did not know.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
I don't think that the Messiah was going to come
through David.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
I think that Jesse had already passed by that time.
But that's what David was promised. David was promised that
the Messiah would.
Speaker 2 (34:00):
Come through him through his line, and therefore he was
Jesse was in the Genealogy of Jesus Matthew chapter one,
verses one through sixteen. Luke chapter three, verses twenty three
through twenty eight, go over that.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
I won't read those. You can read them if you're
interested in spotting his name.
Speaker 2 (34:22):
There, the Messiah's reign came through David due to God's
promise in Second Samuel chapter seven.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
So let me read that.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Actually also First Chronicle seventeen. But let me just go
quickly to Second Samuel chapter seven and read verse sixteen.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
Before you, your throne shall be established forever. That's David
being promised that the Missie Ayah would come through him.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
One of the reasons why I thought it was still
a possibility, despite how often that the Word of God refers.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
To Jesse as David's father, David is Jesse's son.
Speaker 3 (35:20):
I thought it was still possible that David was the
result of an affair, not biologically his son, because not
because of.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
How do I want to say this one thing?
Speaker 2 (35:36):
I wanted to mention is that in Israel and often
in the US, when someone is adopted, they receive a
new birth certificate with their adoptive parents' name on it.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
And so that that type of.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Recognition and deference to the function of the relationship over
the biology is something that was in place, and so
I thought that was worth mentioning and worth consideration for
myself as a student of a Bible. And I think
(36:15):
that it's a possibility that the Lord referred to David
and Jesse's as Jesse's son, not because of biology or
because of how Jesse viewed and treated David, but because
of how David viewed and treated Jesse. So that was
a passing thought I had that I thought I would mention.
I think it's important to note that God designed and
(36:36):
created each human being. He sent his son Jesus for
the redemption of each of us human beings. However, it
is incumbent upon the individual to choose to become his child.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
It's not common, but in.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Humanity there are instances of a person choosing someone they're
not biologically descended from to become a son or adulter to.
And in reality, every child must embrace and make a
reality their role toward a parent. So those are kind
(37:12):
of the thoughts that were in my mind in regard
to it. Okay, let's get to something that the Bible
actually said. So Romans chapter ten, verses nine and ten
talk about how let me actually read that. I want
to give an opportunity for people who aren't familiar with
(37:36):
the gospel how to be saved to Jesus wanted to
give an opportunity for you to hear a couple of
verses about how to do that. Romans ten nine and
ten that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord,
and believe in your heart that God raised him from
the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart
(37:58):
a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth
he confesses, resulting in salvation. So that's for you if
you are interested in learning.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
When David was anointed as the future king, it led
to his relationship with Jonathan, King Saul's son. Jonathan showed
no jealousy toward David at all. He never tried to
prevent him from ascending to the throne, which would traditionally
have been his as King Saul's son. Everything David didn't
(38:36):
get from his brother's growing up.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
He got with Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
When evil interfered with this relationship, it was very hard
for David. And I'm going to go ahead and read
some about that relationship. So I'm going to first Samuel
eighteen first.
Speaker 1 (38:57):
Agreed. Oh, excuse me, just a moment, okay.
Speaker 2 (39:05):
Now it came about when he had finished speaking to Saul,
that Jonathan committed himself to David. And Jonathan loved him
as himself, and Saul took him that day and did
not let him return to his father's house. Then Jonathan
made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.
(39:25):
Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him
and gave it to David, with his military gear, including
his sword, his bow.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
And his belt.
Speaker 2 (39:34):
And David went into battle wherever Saul sent him and
always achieved success.
Speaker 1 (39:40):
So Saul put him.
Speaker 2 (39:41):
In charge of the men of war, and it was
pleasing in the sight of all the people and also
in the sight of Saul's servants. Finally, finally, David had
a normal loving situation, a fair chance, first success, and
(40:01):
recognition that this must have been an amazing time for David.
To be included in the daily life of the household,
with Jonathan who loved him, with King Saul, who he
found favor with. That must have been amazing. Okay, let's
(40:23):
go to the next chapter. First Samuel, chapter nineteen. Now
Saul told his son Jonathan and all his servants to
put David to death. Now this came about because I
actually I'll read just a little bit.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
For context.
Speaker 2 (40:51):
Later, Okay, So Al ra Zuman, First Samuel eighteen. Now
it happened as they were coming when David returned from
killing the Philistine, that the women came out of all
the cities of Israel, singing and dancing to meet King
Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with other musical instruments.
The women sang as they played and said, Saul has
(41:13):
slain his thousand and thousands, and David has ten thousands.
Then Saul became very angry for this lyric displeased him,
and he said, they have given David credit for ten thousands,
but to me, they have given credit for only thousands.
Now what more can he have but the kingdom? And
Saul ied David with suspicion. From that day on, So
(41:35):
there's other events that lead.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Up to Saul actually trying to kill him.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
I won't get into all of that, but that was
like the beginning of the end, sadly, and here we go. Well,
I don't know I should say sadly or not, because
David had to become king.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
But it was very hard for David. Okay, first same nineteen.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
Now Saul told Jonathan and all his servants to put
David to death. But Saul, but Jonathan, Saul's son, greatly
delighted in David. So Jonathan informed David saying, my father
Saul is seeking to put you to death. Now, then
please be on your guard in the morning and stay
in a hiding place and conceal yourself. And as for me,
(42:24):
I will go out and stand beside my father in
the field where you're hiding, and I will speak with
my father about.
Speaker 1 (42:31):
You, and whatever I find out, I will tell you.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
Then Jonathan spoke well of David to his father Saul
and said to him, made the king not sin against
his servant David, since he has not sinned against you,
since his deeds have been very beneficial to you. For
he took his life in his hand and struck the
Philistine and the Lord brought about a great victory for
all Israel.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
You saw it and rejoiced.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
Why then would you sin against innocent blood by putting
David to death for no reason? Saul listen to the
voice of Jonathan and salvowed, as the Lord lives, David
shall not be put to death. Then Jonathan called David,
and Jonathan told him all these words. And Jonathan brought
David to Saul, and he was in his presence as before.
(43:19):
So we can see that Jonathan gave David the favor
and the loyalty that.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
His brothers never had.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
Okay, let's look at one more, uh for seeing the
chapter twenty. Then David fled from naof in Rama, and
he came and said to Jonathan, what have I done?
Speaker 1 (43:47):
What is my guilt? And what is my sin?
Speaker 2 (43:49):
Before your father that he is seeking my life? Sound
familiar in David's story, Oh man, He said to him,
far from it, you shall not die. Behold, my father
does nothing either great or small, without informing me. So
why would my father hide this thing from me? It
(44:10):
is not so yet, David vowed again, saying, your father
is well aware that I have found favor in your sight,
and he has said, Jonathan is not to know this,
otherwise he will be worried. But indeed, as the Lord lives,
and as your soul lives, there is just a step
between me and death. Then Jonathan said to David, whatever
(44:30):
you say, I will do for you. So David said
to Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I
am obligated to sit down to eat with the king.
But let me go so that I may hide myself
in the field until the third evening. If your father
misses me at all, then say David earnestly requested leave
of me to run to Bethlehem, his city, because it
(44:53):
is the yearly sacrifice there for the whole family.
Speaker 1 (44:56):
If he says that is good, your servant will be safe.
Speaker 2 (45:00):
But if he is very angry, be aware that he
has decided on evil. So deal kindly with your servant,
for you've brought your servant into covenant of the Lord
with you. But if I am guilty of wrongdoing, kill
me yourself. For why then should you bring me to
your father? Jonathan said, far be it from you, For
if in fact I learned that my father has decided
(45:21):
to inflict harm on you, would I not inform you.
Then David said to Jonathan, who will inform me if
your father answers you harshly. Jonathan said to David, come,
let's go out to the field.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
So both of them went out to the field.
Speaker 2 (45:36):
Then Jonathan said to David, the Lord, the God of Israel,
is my witness. When I have sounded out my father
about this time tomorrow or the third day. Behold, if
he has a good feeling toward you, shall I not
then send word to you and inform you. If it
pleases my father to do you harm, May the Lord
do so to me. And more if I fail to inform,
(45:57):
and send you away, so that you may go and see.
And may the Lord be with you as he has
been with my father. And if I am still alive,
will you not show me the faithfulness of the Lord,
so that I do not die? And you shall never
cut off your loyalty to my house, not even if
the Lord not, even when the Lord cuts off every
(46:17):
one of the enemies of David from the face of
the earth. So Jonathan made a covenant with the House
of David, saying, may the Lord demand it from the
hands of David's enemies. And Jonathan made David vow again
because of his love for him, because he loved him
as he loved his own life. Then Jonathan said to him,
tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be missed,
(46:40):
since your seat will be empty. When you have stayed
for three days, you shall go down quickly and come
to the place where you hid yourself on that eventful day,
and you shall remain beside the Stoneazelle. And I will
shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot
at a target, and behold, I will send the boy,
telling him go find the arrows. If I say specifically
(47:02):
to the boy, behold, the arrows are on this side
of you.
Speaker 1 (47:05):
Go get them.
Speaker 2 (47:07):
Then come, because it is safe for you, and there
is nothing to harm you, as the Lord lives. But
if I say to the youth, behold, the arrows are
beyond you, go because the Lord has sent you away.
As for the agreement of which you and I have spoken, behold,
the Lord is between you and me forever.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
So David hid himself in.
Speaker 2 (47:27):
The field, and when the new moon came, the king
sat down to eat food.
Speaker 1 (47:31):
Now the king sat on his seat as usual, the
seat by the wall.
Speaker 2 (47:35):
Then Jonathan stood up, and Abner sat down by Saul's side, but.
Speaker 1 (47:40):
David's place was empty.
Speaker 2 (47:42):
Nevertheless, Saul did not say anything that day because he
thought it must have been an accident.
Speaker 1 (47:47):
He is not clean, Undoubtedly he is not clean.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
But it came about the next day, the second day
of the new moon, that David's place was empty again.
So Saul said to his son Jonathan, why has the
Sun of Jesse not come to the meal, either yesterday
or today? And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly requested.
Speaker 1 (48:07):
Leave of me to go to Bethlehem.
Speaker 2 (48:09):
He said, please let me go because our family has
a sacrifice in the city, and my brother ordered me
to attend. So now, if I have found favor in
your sight, please let me slip away so that I
may see my brothers.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
For this reason, he has not come to the king's table.
Speaker 2 (48:24):
Then Saul's anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him, you,
son of a perverse, rebellious woman, Do I not know
that you are choosing the son of Jesse to your
own shame and the shame of your mother's nakedness. Ooo,
For as long as the son of Jesse lives on
the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now,
(48:45):
then send men and bring him to me, for he
is doomed to die. But Jonathan replied to his father Saul,
and said to him, why must he be put to death?
What has he done? Then Saul hurled his spear at
him to strike.
Speaker 1 (48:58):
And kill him.
Speaker 2 (48:59):
So Jonathan knew that his father had decided to put
David to death. Then Jonathan got up from the table
in the heat of anger and did not eat food
on the second day of the new moon because he
was worried about David since his father had insulted him.
Now it came about in the morning that Jonathan went
out to the field at the time agreed upon with David,
(49:21):
and a little boy was with him. He said to
his boy, run, now, find the arrows which I'm about
to shoot.
Speaker 1 (49:28):
The boy ran and he shot an arrow passed him.
When the boy reached the location of the arrow.
Speaker 2 (49:33):
Which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the boy and said,
is the arrow not beyond you? Then Jonathan called after
the boy, hurried, be quick, do not stay. And Jonathan's
boy picked up the arrow and came to his master.
But the boy was not aware of anything. Only Jonathan
and David knew about the matter. Then Jonathan gave his
(49:54):
weapons to the boy and said to him go bring
them to the city. When the boy was gone, David
got up from the south side. Then he fell on
his face to the ground about three times, and they
kissed each other and wept together until David wept immeasurably.
Then Jonathan said to David, go in safety, since we
have sworn to each other in the name of the Lord, saying,
(50:15):
the Lord will be between me and you, and between my.
Speaker 1 (50:18):
Descendants and your descendants forever.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
So David set out and went on his way, while
Jonathan went into the city. So that's a little bit
about what happened for David with Jonathan and the difficult
loss after so much redemption from his own family situation,
(50:42):
but he got a period of time in which he
experienced a home situation that was very blessed and enjoyable
for him.
Speaker 1 (50:51):
So one of the things I wanted to highlight is.
Speaker 2 (50:54):
That the way for redemption in his situation was David
spending time with God. The same redeemer and Messiah of
David is available for you, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Speaker 1 (51:07):
And so I want to pray.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
For anyone who is wanting God's redemption for your family situation,
whether it's exactly the same as David's, whether you have
that level of rejection from siblings, from one or both parents,
if you want God to move in your life in
(51:33):
this area, I would.
Speaker 1 (51:34):
Like to pray for you, Heavenly Father.
Speaker 2 (51:37):
I lift up those who are listening Father, that have
pain in their family situations, and I pray and ask
you for the Holy Spirit to minister to them now
and also in time to come in an ongoing basis,
that the Holy Spirit ministers healing and life to them.
Speaker 1 (51:59):
Lord acceptance of.
Speaker 2 (52:01):
Them, your love for them, and I pray for more
revelation for them about the plan and the future that
you have for them. I pray that you would draw
them into your presence and draw them to your word, Lord,
and that they would experience, Father, the redemption that you
(52:22):
have for them. In Jesus' name, I pray Father that
you would bless them and help them to leave the
past behind. I pray Father for your presence to strengthen,
to heal, to refresh them, and that you would bless
them to recognize Lord, your goodness in their life.
Speaker 1 (52:45):
That you would bless them to.
Speaker 2 (52:46):
Recognize Father, and to thank you for things that you
have done. Father, And I pray Lord that there would
be a turnaround for each person that's listening, first and
foremost their own heart and in their own mind, and
in regard to their path, that there would be adjustments
(53:06):
to the path that they're.
Speaker 1 (53:07):
On to enter more fully into what you have for them.
And also I pray for.
Speaker 2 (53:13):
A change in their family situation in Jesus' name. Amen,
God bless you guys, thanks for listening. Be with you
again soon.
