Speaker 1 (00:11):
So you are the president ASP president a student trustee
slash student trustee for Victor Valley College.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yes, I am.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
That's a that's a big responsibility, is it not.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
It definitely is a lot of work. Definitely a lot
of shoes to fill from former ASP presidents and student trustees.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Actually like nervous that like, well, I mean you're short,
so you can't fill the shoes, okay, man, But every
day you help with my improv skills by coming up
with better short jokes.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
How do I do that?

Speaker 1 (00:56):
The whole shoe thing. You literally just said fill the
shoes and I immediately went on on on the attack.
That's your height.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
How about we just resort to using the words vertically challenged.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
You make it sound like it's a condition.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
It is.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
It's not my fault. Oh I'm gonna cry just on
short jokes today. All right? So, uh you, Hailey Reyes
are the Victor Valley College ASB President for the twenty
twenty four twenty twenty five school year. Yep, you're also
our first guest on the brand new ASB podcast Ramplify.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Woo.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, are you excited?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
I actually am.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
It's a different environment that I've never been in it.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
It's it's super intimate. There's like thirty lights on us
right now. Yes, we got our YouTube background behind us.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
I know, I love this background.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
This is good. Yeah. So I want to talk to
you about the ASB goals. You guys have a lot
of them this year. What are what are some of
the well, eleven I guess that's a lot, right.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Yeah, I mean it's definitely enough to keep the team
busy throughout the.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
School year, right, and you narrowed it down from like
three hundred and fifty.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Three hundred and forty two.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Oh gotta be specific. Okay, let me write that down
three forty two, got it. So, what are some goals
that students and staff and the community can look forward
to this year that you guys are going to execute.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
I think one of my favorite ones that we've been
advocating for the past year or so is to get
the art building and the kill yard back up and running.
So for ceramics, yes, I know, we just passed the
curriculum for that, So for students to actually be able
to use the killing yard is definitely going to be impressive.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
From the work that well, have you ever played with
clay before?

Speaker 2 (02:49):
I feel like I have long time ago, like kindergarten,
but I don't remember.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
I made a mug one time and I was like
so excited because it was like for Mom's Day or
Mother's Day, and then like two years later, the handle
fell off.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Oh so I'm sorry about that.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
I don't know if there was enough love made when
I made it, so maybe that's why I fell off.
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
That's a little dark, Andrew, are you okay?

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Okay, I'm okay.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Do you need to trauma that?

Speaker 1 (03:14):
No, No, we'll save that for a special edition of Ramplifying.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Okay, Yeah, sounds good.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Yeah, like Ramplify after hours. I guess.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
I don't know after dark. I just carding.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
Wow. Okay, So that's one thing. What else are you
guys working on for those ASB goals this year?

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Another one that I can't hear you very.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Well talk more? Yes, Oh my gosh, I'm kidding. Go ahead.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
One that comes to my mind is probably updating or
revamping revitalizing the ASB the VBC website. Yeah, that's the
first area that students go to to find out all
the information they need to know about Victor Valley College
and so being able to present all that information on

(04:03):
one area for them will definitely be helpful, kind of
like the VBC mobile app.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Oh yeah, by the way, if you guys have not
downloaded that, it's available in the Android and Apple store,
keyword VVC mobile. Go ahead and do that.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
The VBC Universe in your pocket.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
There it is. Yes, high five on that. All right. Yes,
we do shameless plugs of VVC brands here, that's what
we do. So all right, well we have a couple
of minutes left. What's another goal that you got you
want to highlight here before we take a break.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Let's see probably just anything that we're doing on lower
campus this year. Hopefully building shade structures that students can
study under, because there's not much areas that students can
collaborate together.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
You can just sit under a tree, right, No.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
They need tables, they need space, all right, They need
to feel like it's a place that welcomes them.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
I think because I was looking at the goals earlier
that you guys are going to be doing or going
to help revive give a makeover to the botanical garden too. Yeah,
so a lot of you guys climate control activists on
on council this year. Huh.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Maybe we do have green cloth.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yes, a lot of green clothes, a lot of green Yeah,
save the trees. Good for you guys. Yeah, it's not
going to stop the jokes. It's not though, Andrew.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Can we can we at least talk about it?

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah? Sure, So we'll be right back here on Ramplify
with more from Hailey Rays asp President, don't go away.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Can we just talk.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
About we are right now? Okay, Andrew, she wants to
talk about the tape on on my cup. First off,
at iced Tea. Second off, I bought this from a
place here in the High Desert and they are not
sponsoring the podcast, so we have to you've seen this

(06:14):
on TV. They tape up brands and stuff, so you
can't see what it is.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
I could have at least taped it nicer.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
I could have, but it's kind of off camera so
you can't really see it. Okay, Yes, okay, let's move on,
very very calmly and quietly here. Okay, how old are you?

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Nineteen? About to be twenty?

Speaker 1 (06:38):
You? Literally I have in my notes here nineteen years
on campus before actually going here, give or take. So, like,
did you live on campus? Like? How does that work? I?

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Mean pretty much. I mean I've spent the night a
couple times on campus.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
How like, why just past.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Events like Relaye for Life. But I was raised on campus.
My mom actually works here.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Oh got it? Yeah, cheaper daycare to have you here.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Pretty much past daysp councils were just thrown into babysitting me.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, it's part of it's part of the responsibilities. It's
in the constitution.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah, to take care of VVC children. Yeah, there are
students too.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
Yeah. Okay, so you basically learned VVC before becoming a RAM.
Is that what you're telling me? Absolutely, that's hilarious. I
don't think there's a whole lot of people on campus
that can say that.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
I used to get called a walking billboard walking billboard, Yeah,
because I could just explain.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
VBC everything by the book Eat Sleep VVC. Wow, look
at that. Okay, so you've had nineteen years to think
about it. What is your major?

Speaker 2 (07:51):
I'm actually majoring in criminal justice and psychology.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Okay. If you were going to tell me undecided, I
was going to lose it because by now you should know.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Right, I mean, there's always room to add more.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
Okay. So okay, so psychology and what did you say
for rent for criminal justice? Criminal justice? How does that work?
You like that twisted stuff like murder mystery stuff? Huh?

Speaker 2 (08:15):
I mean it's interesting, but it's more so I want
to go to the BAU, which is the behavioral analysis
unit inside the FBI.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
You like you like criminal mind stuff?

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Yes? I love the behavior of criminal Wow, it's fascinating.
Why do they do what they do?

Speaker 1 (08:33):
What is your what is like your favorite uh like
type of crime stuff that you get into.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
I mean I'll listen to podcasts about like cold cases,
forensic files.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Like is it the husband killing the wife's stuff? Is
that like the things that are you're like, oh yeah,
let's see how they did this? I think I know.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Sometimes, but I mean, have you heard of the Zodiac killer?
Oh my gosh, things like that, people that never got caught.
How were they able to like not get caught? You know,
like how do they get the police off of their back?

Speaker 1 (09:08):
So you're into the crimes where the person got away
with it and they've never been found without a trace,
cold cases, cold cases, that's terrifying. How so, I don't
know how I feel about that. I don't And I
lost I lost track of time here I think I
think we're like four minutes in with this. Okay, So

(09:29):
after VVC, what's the plan, Like, where do you want
to go and what do you want to do?

Speaker 2 (09:34):
I'm thinking of transferring. I don't know where to yet.
I know cal poly Pomona has criminology program, but the
BAU like hopefully, but if not, just anything to do
with psychology. But I'm also always willing to come back
to Victim Valley College and.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Teach everybody about the Zodiac Killer.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
No, just be part of making like just improving the
fastest growing community college in California.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, all right, well that's exciting. Thanks for thinking of
us over here.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
I mean I've lived here, so I have to come
back and visit.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
We should have the maintenance and operation build you a
boat house on the lake since you live here. Basically
I think they would.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
I'm kind of like their Knees's daughter, whatever you want
to call it.

Speaker 1 (10:20):
Wow, that's great. So what else do you think? Really
quickly before we take another break here? VBC has to
offer when it comes to courses for students and what
they want to do. Because not everyone has been here
for nineteen years, some people are probably undecided. One or
two years by, you know, going here and stuff. So

(10:41):
what about them, Like, what's the advice president that you
tell them?

Speaker 2 (10:46):
I think there's we have so many disciplines in this
community college, so many different certificates and degrees that are
offered to our students, and we're still adding. More so
the fact that I think students like you don't have
to know right away. You have time to figure out

(11:10):
what you want to do. I didn't know what I
wanted to do. I just picked criminal justice because it
was the first thing I could think of from what
I've learned with like in high school and everything like that.
But it wasn't always what I wanted to do, and
eventually I added psychology into it. So there's so many

(11:30):
choices and examples of things that you can follow, and
the paths are endless.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
That was beautiful. I like that. Yeah, So We're going
to take another break and then when we come back,
I'm going to do some psychology on you, okay, and
we're going to We're going to dive deep into your
past because I want to know your challenges. I want
to know your struggles and how that all came to
be with you ending up here at VBC as the

(11:57):
end result. Okay, okay, all right, we'll be right back.
So we're back here on ramplifying.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
M hm.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
Hailey rayis asb president.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
And student trustee and.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Student trus Do you get like a stipend because you're
a student trustee?

Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (12:17):
Yeah. How much money is it?

Speaker 2 (12:20):
I believe it got raised from former.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
Oh all right, making the big bucks. So that basically
means that you get a voice when the boarder trustees does,
like their official announcements and stuff on the uh, you know,
on deciding the fate of stuff here at the college. Huh.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yes, it's very important. I mean, the whole reason that
there is to help students, so they it's very important
that there is a student voice sitting up there.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Anyone on the Board of trustees intimidating to you.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Not really, I mean all of them can be intimidating,
for sure. I mean, you know and.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
Wood it's the beard, right, definitely, the beard. That's what
does it. All right, Hey, let's talk about you though, okay,
because it hasn't always been roses and daisies for you, right,
So so walk me through, walk me through what high
school was like, and then how how from high school,
you decided Victor Valley College is a way to go.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
So high school was kind of not my favorite. Freshman
year was kind of very hard for me. I started
off being part of AVID, just continuing that from junior
high and then moving all the way to going being
a cheerleader and things like that, so being involved in

(13:42):
the high school community and things like that. But then
I started losing. My grandma passed away, my dad passed away,
and then my aunt passed away.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
All through high school.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Yes, well like my grandma was continuing from junior high.
But it was like in the span of three years.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
Wow, what they die from?

Speaker 2 (14:02):
All heart attacks?

Speaker 1 (14:04):
So here you are, fourteen, fifteen years old, AVID, cheerleader,
very outgoing, and you lose three probably three of like
your closest family members in a row. So what did
that do to you?

Speaker 2 (14:22):
So it wasn't it wasn't really a positive impact obviously,
So my grades slipped. I had straight f's.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
You just like didn't care anymore.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Yeah, I dropped out of cheerleading, I switched to an
independent study, and I did no. I did absolutely nothing
the month that I was there.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
So you just, I guess kind of spiraled more into
like this darkness of life than Okay, So.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
After that independent study program, I went back to the
high school that I was originally at, and I started
just hanging out with like the wrong crowd.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
What is mean wrong crowd?

Speaker 2 (15:01):
Specify that it wasn't really the good kids, like the
examples you want to follow. So like many kids that
tended to like smoke.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
The label in high school with stoners, Yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
Didn't do that personally. Let's let's get that straight first.
The people hung out.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
So here's my question then, Like, because usually usually we
become victims of our environment, right if we're in them
for too long. You were in that for a minute,
so you chose not to smoke, but yet you were
still being influenced by them. What was it about that
group of individuals that you were gravitating more towards versus

(15:43):
other groups on campus?

Speaker 2 (15:46):
I mean, they kind of just understood where I was.
They didn't have the best past either, due to like
trauma and things like that, and so we just kind
of all connected in that way through trauma. Yeah, pretty much.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
Yea, that happened sometimes, but somehow you came out of
that eventually. What was the deciding factor that started, like
the light switch like changed everything, Like what was that moment?

Speaker 2 (16:13):
So I like to think, even though it was a
terrible year for everyone, COVID definitely had an impact.

Speaker 1 (16:20):
In a bad way or a good way.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
It kind of saved me really, So when COVID happened,
they told me I had to switch to a different
school because I felt so far behind in credits. They
told me I wasn't going to graduate on time with
my class and everything. So I switched to Majave. I
started doing the work and everything because it just seemed
easier to do.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Was it because it's just you were at home all
the time and had nothing else to do, so you
just started focusing on school work.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
I had nothing to do, and I was so bored,
so I just did my school work. Wow, Okay, I
started getting straight a's. I started connecting with my teachers.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
So let me walk you through that. Because you were
like getting f's and d's or whatever. And I mean
when you were getting the bad grades, was it even
like was it even phasing you anymore? At some point
You're just like, oh, whatever.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
I mean, I was a little disappointed in myself, but
I couldn't find the energy to do better.

Speaker 1 (17:13):
But then you started doing better and like, okay, so
you get like your first day like where we're like,
where were you with that? Like, how did that feel?

Speaker 2 (17:21):
I'm a hovey. Yeah, I honestly don't remember. But there
was a time where I was talking to my forensic
science teacher.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
And my math teacher about life.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
Just life in general, and they told me I should
start taking college classes while being on just online if
I needed to take up time out of my day
to find something to do. Okay, So I enrolled at
VBC and I took a forensic science course I passed.

Speaker 1 (17:50):
So how did that feel? Now now that you're getting
a's in high school and you're going to college now
at the same time, and now you're you're passing those classes? Also,
it felt good.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
It felt like there was more I can do like
I would. I didn't have to just be stuck behind
the four walls of my home trying to figure out
how to fix my life and get out of the
deep hole that I dug myself in.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
So you started actually learning how to build your own confidence. Yes,
and then going to the college kind of helped with
that because you're taking more classes and passing.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
Them and then eventually COVID kind of ended, we were
able to go back on campus. They my math teacher
invited me to be part of ASB and High School,
where I became vice president. We rebuilt ASB after COVID

(18:48):
and we put on dances, back to school nights and
like just events to get students engaged. But at the
time I was also part of the Ingenuity program, which
helped me get credits. You can faster than being already
being at a continuation school, and I managed to graduate

(19:08):
seven months early.

Speaker 1 (19:17):
You're an ASB now in high school that's where we
last left off, and you're doing dances, you're doing fun events,
You're you're becoming that bright, cheery Hailey again. Yes that
went to the dark side. Okay, yes for a while. Cool.
So then you graduate and you decide I'm going to

(19:39):
continue at for Drelly College. I'm assuming that's because you're
here literally right now.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Yes, absolutely, But then like.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
You decide you're gonna run for ASB president here.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
Yeah, it was a I mean, there.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
Are so many positions on ASB you could have ran for.

Speaker 2 (19:57):
I know, I was student Services senator last year.

Speaker 1 (20:00):
But you you're like, I'm gonna I'm gonna run this.
So that's that's a big task to take on, you know,
especially when you when you when you look at everything
the ASP does on this campus. It's an award winning club.
It's it's recognized nationally. You know this, this little old
campus is recognized nationally. That's a lot to take on,

(20:21):
but you decided you're gonna do it.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
I mean the support system and the people before me
that have set the stage that I look up to
a lot, like, they motivated me to be part of this.

Speaker 1 (20:36):
That's good. Well, let's get to know Haley then, Like,
what are you watching on Netflix?

Speaker 2 (20:43):
I mean I watched a lot of Supernatural.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Okay, which is not forensics or or criminal Justice.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
I mean criminal Minds too, obviously based on my career choices,
but mainly Supernatural.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Is that like your only go to show?

Speaker 2 (20:58):
It's my comfort show.

Speaker 1 (21:00):
It's your comfort show?

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Yeah, fifteen seasons?

Speaker 1 (21:02):
Wow, and you've watched them all?

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (21:06):
Oh my god, you know before I was in college.
We don't need to date myself, but when I was
in before I was in college, that was a show
in high school.

Speaker 2 (21:15):
M hmm. I just love the older shows.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
Yeah, well they they don't make them like they used
to anymore. Let me tell you, Okay, what about music, Like,
what are you like? What are your jams?

Speaker 2 (21:27):
Honestly, I listened to anything.

Speaker 1 (21:30):
What's like? What's like a bop that you're listening to
right now?

Speaker 2 (21:33):
I listen to a lot of Arctic Monkeys, So a
lot of indie band.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
That's kind of old too, Haley.

Speaker 2 (21:39):
Why can I say I'm an old soul?

Speaker 1 (21:41):
Oh my god? They were a band when I was
in high school. Oh my gosh. Okay, So you like,
not the Justin Bieber's or the Taylor Swifts of the world.
Not your thing. The look on your face when I
said that, Wow, Okay.

Speaker 2 (21:54):
I don't have nothing against them, it's just not my thing.

Speaker 1 (21:58):
What was the last anyone? Well, you're so nice. Just
it's just all the way around. What's the last like
concert that you went to?

Speaker 2 (22:05):
I've never been to one.

Speaker 1 (22:07):
You've never been to a concert?

Speaker 2 (22:08):
I mean unless you count one that's like a remake
of Elvis, but no tribute.

Speaker 1 (22:15):
Bands definitely don't count.

Speaker 2 (22:16):
Yeah, I've never been to a concert. Then it's so upsetting,
I know that is. I mean, unless you're willing to
get like, donate Andrew for me to go by first count.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
See he thinks I have money. That's great. Oh man,
we should bring like post Malone to the college.

Speaker 2 (22:32):
Like post Malone, of everyone Andrew.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
Because everybody likes post Malone. Who doesn't like post Malone?

Speaker 2 (22:38):
I feel like we could find some bigger, better stars though.
I mean, he's great and all, but I feel like
there's just someone out there that's that will connect to
them more.

Speaker 1 (22:47):
I just I just feel like post Malone's a way
to go. I don't know.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
I mean, if you can do it, I'll be there.

Speaker 1 (22:53):
We'll see, we'll see. I'll text him and see if
he wants to do it. How about that?

Speaker 2 (22:57):
That'd be great?

Speaker 1 (22:58):
Okay? So all right, Uh, if you could have one
concert to go to, who would it be?

Speaker 2 (23:07):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (23:10):
I feel like you would definitely dig an Avril Levine concert.
You're giving that vibe.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
I mean it would be cool. I love I love
Avril Levine, but I mean eminem.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
Okay, I could see that. Working with you here at
the college, I can definitely see that.

Speaker 2 (23:28):
Yeah, that would be a great content.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
You'd be front row on that definitely. All Right, Well,
we got to wrap this up, so, uh, the way
I want to wrap it up is, tell me a joke.
We'll start there.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
Suck a jokes, Andrew.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
I know on the spot she was not expecting this. Yeah,
you gotta look in the camera when you do it too.
Oh no, oh my gosh, it's not live. Come on,
let's let's hear your best joke.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (23:57):
This is the best part of the podcast where we
throw something on you and then you have to make magic.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
So let's see. I'm trying to think. Knock knock, all.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
Right, who's there interrupting? Cow interrupt? Oh my gosh, maybe
we shouldn't have done that.

Speaker 2 (24:20):
That's what I said. Wow, next time, just listen to me, Andrew.

Speaker 1 (24:24):
We're gonna get so many thumbs down on this on
this episode.

Speaker 2 (24:27):
I'm sorry. You can always just cut it out.

Speaker 1 (24:29):
We may we may actually do that, all right. So
encourage students here in the Victor Valley in the high
Desert to come to Victor Valley College and why.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
It's a better path for a better future. Definitely, there's
so many possibilities and opportunities that are just waiting for you.
So many networking opportunities with people that will be there
with you throughout your lifetime, so many doors that are opening.
It's it's honestly just a constant, positive path that you

(25:07):
can continue on whatever you want to do with your life,
whether it's starting in the workforce or starting like taking
classes to work up to your degrees, maybe become a doctor,
maybe become a part of an esthetician, or take our

(25:27):
aviation classes, take welding, any of our ct courses, even
if you just want to get your GED or learn English.
And there's so many opportunities that are on VVC, and
that's why I'll always say VVC is the place to be.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
Thanks for tuning in. We'll see you next time.

Speaker 2 (25:46):
