(Re) Discovering Dracula (Spoiler: It's Epic AF)

The Hellmouth has swallowed the world leaving me in a perma-state of anxiety, paranoia, and insomnia. I started listening to audiobooks to help keep my mind from spiraling while trying to sleep. I chose books that I'd never read or didn't remember reading. I was very surprised to find that the classics that I thought I knew were different - and much better - than I thought. I wanted to just express my fascination and joy about that one chapter at a time.

Dracula is much scarier than people give it credit for because we're so used to "scary" being at much higher levels of intensity and such things in the book are par for the course in our modern world of terror and weirdness in everything we watch. Think differently.

In this episode I talk about Chapter 3 which is one of the chapters I first really loved in the book. I talk about Dracula's wives (two of which are dark) and how Jonathan changes into someone I like even more.

After ranting about adaptations and changes to Dracula, I finally launch into what I love so much about the very short, but very important Chapter 2 of this classic. The Count is HELLA sus and really quite brilliant.

As I begin to discuss Chapter 2 I start by going on a bit of a long rant about something that really bothers me about how they keep screwing up adaptations of this great book ... Why adapt a book you CLEARLY don't respect in ANY way?

Chapter 1 of Dracula sets up the entire core dread and mystery of the book so it amazes me how quickly it's skipped over in most film adaptations I have seen. I adore Jonathan and his way of seeing the world so innocently when everyone around him is terrified.
