(00:00):
Oh, I mean him, Dan, this is your girl, ev Welcome,
Welcome. I am so excited today. I don't know, it's a
dream come true. I have.I'm I'm excited. I'm excited, I'm
blessed, and I'm that I'm ableto chat with the amazing woman singer,
(00:21):
perform entertainer, then comfortable recording artistsnow Asia and hey, how are you
good? Good? How are you? I'm doing great? Thank you so
much for the time. I appreciateyou so much for giving me the chat.
(00:47):
Thank you, thank you so much, you know, for the opportunity,
you know, but you know, for taking the time. Because girl,
you've been busy lately. I've noticed. I've noticed, and i am
I'm if I may say, I'mso glad. I am so happy that
there's things going on, the ballis rolling, that there's projects and things
(01:08):
happening, you know, because inthe freestyle world sometimes it's like a standstill
after a minute. But I'm soso happy and proud of you that you've
been doing your thing. Thank you. I've actually, you know, my
husband pointed it out to me theother day, because I I don't sit
(01:30):
and think about how much I've beenworking. I just get up and do
it right. So he goes, you know, somebody had posted something.
I can't remember what it was,and he said, you know you've been
You've been NonStop since you first cameout. Yeah, you know, I
didn't. I didn't. I didn'tgo away for a number of years and
then and come back when I've beenconstantly recording since nineteen ninety one. So
(01:57):
that's amazing. That's like, hassyeah, it's it's long. It long.
It's long because I have I havetwo albums, I have a couple
of singles in between, a fewsingles and being treating those and after the
second album and working on the thirdalbum, and it's a it's a lot
(02:17):
of stuff. And and like yousaid, I've been very busy lately,
and I'm, like you said, completely blessed by this. This has been
lasting. One of the is notthe most busiest year. And we're only
into May. We just started May. So there's a lot of shows coming
(02:40):
up and a couple more songs thatpeople haven't heard that I'm still waiting on
final mixes to bring out. Ohyeah, me too. Stepping into places
I've never been to before, youknow, going to collide this year.
Uh Puerto Rico going back to Brazilin November. So you know, Bracil
(03:06):
is very hot right now with freestyle. It is hot over there. Well,
Brazil has all been down. Theyhave always been big with freestyle.
The first time was in nineteen ninetyone and they were huge with freestyle,
and then you know, I guessthere's a little time in between where you
(03:27):
know, there's traveling over there wasn'tgoing to be profitable for either side,
you know. And then Stevie Btook me back out in twenty eighteen and
it was as if I was therefor the first time in ninety one,
because the reaction was just the same, if not even bigger. And then
we went back in twenty twenty threeand again the reaction was even bigger.
(03:53):
And then we went back in Januarytwenty twenty four and they just blew it
out the park in Brazilia. Howwe're returning in November. That is amazing.
That is amazing because that's the onethat CVB is doing, so that's
in November. That is so exciting. That is so exciting because I've heard
(04:16):
about Brasel. I mean, I'veseen videos online. It's just it's really
it's over. It's I'm excited becausethere's people at the other they they like
it too, and it's you know, freestyle has been undergrad underrated, you
know, not to get into thatwhole mess, but it's just it's been
(04:39):
under rated and and just knowing thatthey love it so much and it's just
like a big thing down there. It is we were. I was blessed
when I went in ninety one,and I I have to say that the
Brazilian fans, they have this pieceof my heart. Wow. They welcomed
(05:01):
me with open arms. They didn'tcare where I come from, what my
background was, who I knew, who I didn't know, who produced me,
who didn't produce me. They werejust like, it's Niasia and she
sings down forever and that's all wewant, you know. And it was
when I first stepped over there,I felt like like I knew what the
(05:24):
Beatles felt like when they first cameto America. Oh my goodness. And
that's the closest reaction I can Ican honestly give to people when they asked
me, how does it feel, you know when you go to Brazil,
Like when I went there for thefirst time, and it was that.
I can I can imagine what theBeatles felt when they came off the airplane
in the airport in the United Statesand they were overwhelmed by the fandom.
(05:46):
Why those fans, Oh my goodness, it is crazy. But I'm happy
that, you know, you gotto go. I hope that they're more
freestyle artists get to go down thereand experience that as well. Yes,
I know some some ctebe b isbringing different people up there. You know,
(06:09):
you have to do your research becausea lot of the songs that we
love out here in the United States, it's not the type of songs that
they listen to over there or thatthat has made a big impact, you
know. So he has to likereally be careful of of the people he
(06:30):
brings, make sure that it's goingto be beneficial for everybody and that the
fans we want to see this person. You know, you got to be
smart about when you're promoting shows andthings like that. So you know,
he has a good head on hisshoulders. He's a great businessman, he's
a great friend. He's a phenomenalperformer. So if you're gonna if you're
gonna follow anyone who's bringing you toBrazil has got to be this guy.
(06:53):
I'm so glad that he was thevessel to bring you down there, because
it's true. Sometimes you know, you have to do your research and do
everything you know accordingly, you know, because this is a different country,
it's a different audience. Be boughtthat. You know, if you're freestyle
artists, you're not going to goperform in an R and B club.
It makes no sense, I know. Imagine that you ever thought, imagine,
(07:20):
Oh my goodness, oh I didthat. That happened to me once
for Oh my god. Yes,someone booked me for for a show in
uh in West pum Beach. Andyou know they advertise it as you know,
freestyle artists ni Asia. So Iguess the crowd must have thought it
was a rapping freestyle, Oh mygod, freestyle wrapper. So the crowd
(07:46):
was all hip hop and whatever. They're just standing in front of the crowd
with the arms crossed around their chestthinking there. Yeah. One person came
up to me at the end.He was like, you did your thing,
ma, you did your thing, thank you, thank you for that.
(08:07):
One person like that. That's good. Yeah, at least you know
he came up to me. Hekind of like, knew, you know
this, this isn't what the freestyle you know thing I was waiting for.
But you know, you held yourground. You stood up there,
you didn't flinch, you didn't backoff or get off the stage. You
did your thing. You did yourshow. When you got off, I
said, listen, I've done showswhere there's outdoor shows where there ten thousand
(08:33):
and seventeen thousand. Then I've doneoutdoor shows there's only like maybe twenty wow,
And I will perform for either showthe same way, because if those
twenty people came to see me,then I'm going to give them the show
that they came to see. Ohmy god, that is on. And
as a fan, you know, and audience, we appreciate that so much.
(08:56):
And I think that's why a lotof people gravitate towards you. They
have this love for you because yougive it all. You give it all
and it doesn't matter, like youmentioned, doesn't matter that the size of
the crowd. You give it all, and we appreciate that. You know,
well, thank you, because Iappreciate the fact that people come out
of their home, some of themleave their kids at home or with the
(09:18):
babysitter because it's the only time theycan go out. I get that.
You know, I was a singlemom for ten years, twenty years,
I was a single mom, andI know how hard it is when you
want to go out because you needa break and you have to get a
babysitter. You feel guilty because you'releaving your kids with a babysitter, but
you also need a break. SoI appreciate that when people come to the
(09:41):
show, so you don't always knoweveryone's story, why they're there, so
you have to get them a goodshow for them to remember, you know,
to have a good memory about itexactly. And it makes us feel
so good, you know, asa mom, Listen, we need a
break, We need that girl, that friendship time. It's just it elevates
(10:03):
you. You do need, youknow, moms need, and even dance
because there's a lot of single dance. I'm giving them a lot of single
dance, you know, out theredoing that thing. Yes, so I
have to give them a shadow andyou know, we do need that that
time, that time. You know, do you ever, ever, in
your wildest dream ever thought that youwere going to find yourself at this moment
(10:26):
in your life, still singing, still performing, still connecting with the fans.
Not at all, Wow at all. I always play it day by
day, year by year. Iguess when I got into it, or
when the opportunity came to me.I this was not what I wanted to
(10:46):
do. I wanted to become apolice officer. I wanted to join the
army. Wow. I grew upa tomboy, so that to me,
was the way I was going togo. But it didn't work out that
way. You know, I hadmy son early. I was twenty years
old when I gave birth to myfirst son. So at that point I
(11:07):
was like, I can't think aboutwhat I want from me mm hmm.
You know, going to the army, being a police off those are dangerous
things. I have a child now. So when the opportunity, you know,
dropped in my lap and I waslike, okay, I'll try it.
Yeah, you gotta think, butyou gotta do what you gotta do.
You gotta do what you gotta do, and you gotta you You can't
fight what destiny has a store foryou, whether it's good or bad.
(11:31):
You just gotta follow the road untiluntil it's until it ends. So to
me, I never figured that itwould go past the five years that I
was signed on with Mickmac. Rightafter that, I signed up with another
label in Miami that that didn't workout. And then after that I signed
up with Tasmania Records and we didthe second album and I was like,
(11:56):
really, I'm still gonna record.I'm really do I still want to do
that. And I was like, well, if the fans still come to
the shows, I might as wellcontinue to record. It's the ale I
am in that place in people's life, and I'm so glad and happy that
you still can connect. And Ithink that I always said that there's a
lot of recording artists that they havethis thing that they just connect with with
(12:20):
the audience and they just, youknow, things like I happen. I
see the audience. I feel Iam the audience. I don't know if
that makes sense. I've never sawmyself or didn't consider or don't consider myself
(12:41):
an artist as you know, asopposed to like let's say, Madonna,
Uh, Whitney Houston, you know, all these share These these are people
that to me are like amazing. You know, I don't see my favorite
as that, but I do seethat other people, and my husband again
(13:03):
is the one that tells me youmay not see yourself that way. But
when we were on the cruise, two people came up to me. One
was another artist and another one wasa fan and she says, you know,
you got me through a lot ofthings when I was fifteen and sixteen
with that song. And that's notthe first time I hear it, you
know. So to me, I'mjust like when they're telling me this,
(13:26):
like I say thank you, Butinside of me, I'm like, what
did I do for you know? What could I have possibly done for you?
Because to me, after, I'mall, if I get off the
stage, I am the wife,I am the mother, I am the
daughter. You know, I getI come back to me and my family.
(13:46):
So I guess I don't know. It's just still strange, even after
thirty something years. So still howdid I manage that, you you know,
after thirty something like you mentioned,But it's just I think that there's
something about you that is just isvery welcoming, and because that's how I
(14:07):
feel like. You know, you'rea very a person that communicates well,
You're very laid back, you know, and I think that's what gravitates towards
us, the fans, and whenwe see that all forgetting forget it,
we're like, oh my god,you know, we go crazy. But
(14:28):
it's something that I think that thatplays a lot for a recording, for
an entertainer, a singer, justto have that connection and that that's something
that it not a lot of peoplehave that it that can connect with the
audience, you know, and Iyou have it because I've seen you performing
and I being I'm like, ohmy god, I feel it. I
(14:50):
feel the energy I feel. Itdoesn't matter how big the club was or
the venue, the it doesn't matter. But you you give it all.
You give it all. Yeah,I think they deserve it and I deserve
it. You know, why whyam I? What are you wasting?
What are you wasting? Thirty somethingyears exactly exactly? And if you have
your expectations and I say this toall the the you know, the way
(15:13):
that I've been blessed to interview you, you you should have your expectations high
because you work par for it.Why not? Why not? Yeah?
You were you have to have yourexpectations, you like you know, as
like you mentioned, you see yourselfas a fan. So you're gonna expect
(15:35):
and you're gonna do better because that'sjust the way you are, you know,
And if people don't have that, then you know that connection is gone,
is lost. Yes, you know, I agree, I know,
my goodness, But you know, but who inspired you to to begin this
crazy world of music? Like? Was it just one a lot of the
(15:56):
blue that you're like, oh,you know, just kind of saying know,
was it just something that it justhappened? It's yeah, it literally
just happened. I started out asa dancer for Willie Valentine and Michael Bertaux
and they yeah, because they neededa dancer, and I was like,
(16:18):
oh okay. And the funny thingis is that I met them at a
club. I used to go toSpanish clubs when I was younger because they
my family and friends used to sneakus in. But I never probably walked
back in the days oh my yeahyou know yet yeah, Broadway ninety six,
(16:40):
all those all those places out there. So my first time at a
at a at an English club,I was twenty one. Wow, And
I was like, oh, Soa friend of mine says, oh,
let's go see you know, StevieBee's playing in four d's. I was
like, okay, I don't knowwho Stevie he is, but all right,
let's go. So we go andI was like, oh, I
(17:03):
like this music. This is good, this is I like this music.
And I'm like, yeah, I'mfeeling it. I'm dancing. And then
I see the guys over there onthe side and we're like hey, hi.
They were talking and dancing whatever, and they're like, oh, we
need you know, a dancer.I see that you're dancing or whatever.
I was like, sure, okay, I'll try. So I think I
(17:25):
danced them for about six months orso. I'm a little big on that.
When we did this big shot theJacob Davids, and someone came up
to them and or came up tous after the show and they were like,
oh, do you sing? Iwas like in church and you know,
in the shower. That was it. And then they were like,
(17:45):
you know, long story short, they were like, oh, can you
get a song done for us?And then Michael we're told it was like
yeah, we'll get it done. We'll get it done, and they did
the song like that, and nowI was created and it just took off
from there. Oh my goodness,do you have a best or worse performance?
I just I always ask this questionbecause you know, back in then,
(18:08):
you know they have so many clubsthat you go and performs, and
you will go and do you know, trying to promote you do your little
hustling. Did you ever had likea little worst or best performance? Or
I had any funny stories? Oh, I have a lot of those,
because I remember, you know,to two hours. Yeah, it's well.
(18:37):
First of all, my my themost memorable show to me was when
I first went to Brazil. Mm. Yeah, because of the magnitude
of that tour. We were therefor ten days. We were there for
two weeks with the ten shows, and that to me was the most memorable.
(19:03):
When someone asked me that question, that's the first thing that pops into
my head right in between those times. Of course, my first show ever
was in Patterson, New Jersey,at a bingo at a bingo hall.
It was called Father English. That'sthat's right, and it was myself,
(19:27):
Willie Valentine and Michael Roteau and TonyMoran. Oh my goodness, look at
that. And my family went andI was I was just so nervous when
I first got on on the onthe microphone. I was just like,
how am I going to get throughthis? I'm gonna throw up. I
feel like my stomach isn't turmoil. What am I gonna do? But I
(19:48):
got through the show, and itwas like like when you when you get
your first tattoo and you're like,oh my god, I can't do that
again, and then you're like, wait a minute, I can go again,
and I can go again, andI can go So this moment,
I have eleven tattoos because you knowit's a dickey. Yes. But as
(20:11):
far as bad shows, I won'tsay I've had a bad show. I
would say I have experiences that Ihaven't had before, Like performing at that
club that they thought was going tobe a rappers, a freestyle rapper,
(20:33):
and you know, you're looking around, you're singing, and I'm like baby
now forever, and everybody's just standingthere like this with the arms cross on
the chest. All right, Sowhen slim Break is gonna come out,
like what's impending a song? Thewords are coming out of my mouth,
but in my head, I'm like, okay, this is the last line
for the chorus, Okay, andthen it's then that's it. Then I
(20:55):
get off the stage. But I'vehad a lot of shows where fights had
broken out. Yes, you know, and you just keep singing. Remember
life is in peril. You continueto sing or you stop for the moment
you're like, Okay, everybody clearthe floor, take whoever's injured out,
let's get back to the show.Yeah, but that's you know, even
(21:18):
even when I did the outside performancethat I like, I said, I
got booked for a show and Ididn't ask questions. I signed the contract
at the deposit. They flew medown. It was just perform here in
Florida in a in a park inOrlando. So we get there and I'm
(21:40):
like, you know, I wasthe only one performing. Oh my,
I believe it was me and fascination, I think. And you know,
I get up on stage. Isee these banners on the side of the
stage and I'm like, oh whatis this? You know, I see
there's like twenty people that are youknow, dressed in guarb and I'm like,
(22:00):
what are we doing? Where arewe? So apparently it was a
show. I don't know if I'msaying it correct, but it was.
It was an appreciation to a god. Oh boy, oh oh wow.
(22:21):
It was a religious thing and allright, yeah, and I was like,
you know what you paid for me. I am going to give you
a show. Even though I thinkthis is weird, I am going to
give you a show. I didthe show. Then I got all my
but you know that. It wasyeah, it was. Oh. There
(22:42):
was another time where I did anotherclub and I had my mother and my
sister go and they thought my motherand my sister were a couple. Oh
my goodness. Oh that's oh,that's scandal. Yeah. And then I
had an older woman at that sameshow. While I'm performing quite older woman.
(23:04):
I was maybe in my thirties atthe time. The woman was clearly
in her sixties. She just grabbedmy chest. She just she just grabbed
my boots. Oh my goodness, she did. Yep. She'd be like
listen, oh okay, oh we'redoing that. Okay. So I'm singing
at the back of the stage likethis. I was like, you doing
(23:27):
you, mama, But if youdon't, you don't do that to me.
Oh my god, what monny experiencethat you remember? And then you
would just like sit down and justbecause it is I can't believe that lady
did that. I can I wasmore. I was more laughing at the
fact that they thought my mom andmy sister were a couple. Oh my
(23:51):
did they? So they came outwhen when numbers and everything. They they
were just like my mother networking toanother show like that again, Oh my
goodness, that is amazing. Idon't blame her. That is crazy.
That is so crazy because you knowwhen I was I sat down with the
Nasty Boys and they were telling meabout you know, they they very into
(24:11):
like dancing and doing all the thingsthat they do, and they always have
like, oh my god, thistime we missed he went off the stage
and this, and then it wasa crazy club. And it's just those
little stories. They just it makeswhat we are today, you know,
like we can just sit now.A lot of people, a lot of
(24:34):
the fans don't know the friendships thatsome of the artists have. Yeah,
behind the scene. So Jay Kwan, when him and Smurf used to come
over to my apartment because we alllived in Florida and Miami, they used
to come over. There were ourgym instructors, So me and my best
friend were roommates and they used tocome over there. You don't eat this,
(24:56):
Nasia don't eat that, don't Theywere like like Nazis and they had
us doing crunches and all kinds ofstuff. I was like, you need
to get out of my house.I love them to death, love them
to death, you know. Andthose are the stories that you know,
like I said, these are that'smy dog. That's my dog talking.
(25:17):
She got excited, she got excited. Oh she liked the nasty boys.
That's fine figures. But these arethe stories that that bond you know,
artists, and I mean through theyears, you know, you know,
you know each other for like, you know, going through all this funny
performances and things that we live andit's just amazing what makes us what we
(25:41):
are today, you know what Imean. So I always ask that question
because it's just it's it's funny tohear the stories and stuff like that,
you know, But oh my goodness, because it's just I just I witness
a lot of things and I'm like, oh my god, are you okay?
Everything good? You know, Butit's funny. It's funny these other
(26:03):
things that we have I've ran intoover the years. I think I had
met maybe by now at least twelveto fifteen different girls that were named nia
Asia. No way, no way, And how did the I mean,
(26:26):
if I may, how did thename came about? Like? Was it
just a mix of two names? You know how Hispanics we always mix two
names. I don't know what Iknow, right, it doesn't make any
sense. No. Actually, Johnny'sbrother, Willie, he had a friend.
(26:51):
I think he had a best friendor something who died of leukemia.
Oh, I think I believe hername was Naisha, and he changed it.
He veried it around a little bitand gave it to me as my
dancer name. Right, And thenwhen I went off on my own,
he just told me to keep thename because he had as his corporation as
(27:12):
a tribute to his friend. Right, he was like, you know,
just keep the name. Everyone knowsyou as that so long behold thirty something
years later, and look at that. Even my even my family called me,
you know, Naya, look atthat. That is amazing that that's
an amazing story. And I thinkit at then it goes which it suits
(27:33):
you for some reason, I don'tknow. I don't know. Like sometimes
I don't even respond to my governmentname. Look, I mean either because
Evie is just a nickname that everybodycalls me ebe Evie love. Hey,
Evie love from up above. It'salways like a little and we answered they
always my friends always always call meee Evie love from up above. And
(27:57):
it was just a big like whatpeople knew, like hey, that's Evie,
that this is ev Evie love overhere, and and and we just
I don't even when they call me, which my original name is Evangeline,
no, and when they call evangelinI'm like, whos dad, who?
And then I'm like, oh,wait a minute, that's me. But
(28:18):
it's just that's just the way wegrow up. And you know, we
grew up my father when he wasalive because he named me after his sister,
who also rests in peace passed away. So sometimes you would call me
and he would say, blank, you say eighties. I was like,
well, I was like, yesthat, yes, can I help you?
(28:41):
Yes? He was like, whydon't you like your your your regular
names? I said, I didn'tpick those, Oh my goodness, you
guys picked so yeah. But youknow, unless the only the only people
who don't call me that out ofmy kids. Hey, that's right,
I agree with you. Yeah,mm hmm. I always I know that's
(29:03):
who am I? Uh, noway, no way. But you know
this shows like how life is likehas you know, it has evolved.
Life has evolved, and you knowthe way the world has changed, the
way we're living now, especially musicmakes it. Music has completely changed.
(29:26):
It's just you know, it meanssomething and then it means something else,
and and it's a it has agreat beat, great sound, and hey
party and whatever. But you knowit has it has changed so much.
You know, do you feel thepressure of keeping up with with the change
or do you prefer more to stayat your you know, your comfort zone.
(29:51):
That's a great question, go easylearning. Do I do I feel
the pressure of going with the timesor do I'd rather stay in my comfort
zone. I like going out ofmy comfort zone a lot. I like
(30:14):
going into like the stuff that thesongs that I'm doing that are I'm still
waiting to come out. It waswith Sapphire and her husband Kenny Diaz and
for Londinium Records, Londinium the label. When I went in to do the
second song, he goes, youknow what, Na, why don't you
(30:36):
sing it like this and look thistone to it? And maybe accentuate this
word and that, and I waslike, mm okay, So I tried
it. I liked it. Igot for the song to come out.
A lot of people have asked me, uh, if I intend to do
Spanish music, Oh, yeah, that far out of my zone. I'm
(31:02):
not too sure. Not because Ispeak fluent Spanish. I write it,
I read it, I understanding,I speak Spanish. I just there's not
too many. There's not a lotof Spanish music that I listened to.
Like, I like a little bitof sasa. I like a little bit
of leggat. I like a littlebit of balladas, you know. I
(31:26):
like a little bit of this andthat and that and this. I'm not
a big fan of any one ofthose separate genres on their own. I
like, I like farupo, youknow, I like the old see from
the old days. Yeah, andthen I feel like you whoever thought of
doing some a little leggaton mix, maybe something like that? You're on my
(31:51):
second album. I forgot the namemy song on my second album. Uh,
there's atone mixed to one of thesongs. Oh, how do you
what is the name of that song? Oh my god, I was just
listening to it on the way herebecause I want to take five seconds to
(32:15):
say, rest in peace are dearfriend Tony Garcia from New Image and passed
away last night. Yes, hewrote a song for me on that album
is called Please Don't Wake Me.He wrote it myself and my husband mm
hm. And he he did backgroundson another song for me on that album.
(32:37):
So rest in peace, Tony,You're gonna be missed, dude.
He was a great person, agreat chef vocalist. So yeah, we're
gonna miss him. So on thatalbum, there's atone mixt to one of
the songs that I did with thegroup Pure Pleasure, all right, yes,
(32:58):
yes, and the Broken Heart.I believe it. It's a thing,
and he didn't don't mix to it, so it's it's pretty good.
You consider doing another one or maybeyou know, you know, started like
a fleet and then change a little. You know, if I had,
if I had a good uh vocalarranger, who would show me how to
(33:27):
you know, delve into that typeof music vocally, because you have to
have the sound for it. Noteveryone can go and and sing, because
then you have tried and have asuccessful mm hm. So I think you
have to have you have to havethe vocals to do that. And it's
(33:52):
not just I don't mean have likeAretha Franklin vocals. I don't mean you
know, you have to sing likewhit in Houston. No, there's a
style to these genres that you had. There's a there's a some type of
recipe and to these genres that youhave to know you can just go I
(34:14):
want to sing a Southside I wantyou know, I want to sing this
song and oh yeah, I'm gonnaget up today. I'm just gonna sing
it and this is how it's gonnado. And it doesn't work that way.
Like, No, you can't justget up and go and do R
and B if you've never done it. It's true. I agree now,
So you know I would love tolike I love rock music. Mm hmm,
that is like my top That wouldbe that, that would be something
(34:37):
cute from you that because we triedto do that last year. I believe
it was. It didn't we didn'thave we had a good recorder, a
good engineer to record music like thethe equipment had a phenomenal guitarist, phenomenal
(35:00):
guitarist, but we didn't have agood vocal engineer. So yeah. So
I was like, oh, let'sput a hold on that for now.
But because when you came out withTime that that first, you know,
because I did a video TikTok videowith that song and it was just a
(35:21):
totally different sound the first time youcame out with you know, with no
mixing, and I was like,so like, oh, man, because
you sounded so good. So nowthat you mentioned the rock, it it
clicks. It would have been nice. It would have been really really nice.
Time was Time was not expected. That wasn't something that was planned.
(35:46):
I was in jenuine Ace house, another great artist that you should have on
the show. She is phenomenal. We were hanging out her house and Jay
Allen was there. He does alot of George Anthony's music. I think
he wrote an album for him andManny, Jenny's husband. He was like,
(36:08):
I need to go huh. II mean I never met her,
but just I'm a fan of hertoo. She's such a heart. She's
a phenomenal person. You could youcould see it, you know, Oh
definitely you feel and when you're inher presence you feel it. Oh yeah,
And he was like, oh,Jay Allens is here, won't you
(36:29):
you know, go do a song. I was like, boy, we
have not we have not sad towrite down a song whatever. By the
time I went up to say,j Aalens had the music all done and
me, Jay, Jenny Reine andManny we just started writing. We just
everyone just added here and there, there and here, and we wrote,
(36:50):
recorded and finished the song that oneday. Wow and I did. It
came out and it was it wasa great song. It's a very I
loved it. I loved it whenit came and I was like what because
it was just something a little bitsometimes you need that little you know that
that you need a little different thing. And I loved it. I really
(37:15):
did. That's why I like workingwith different producers because they always bring something
different to the table. Like whenI did Physical Attraction with Carlos Burials.
I never thought I would be workingwith Carlos Burials because to me, he's
phenomenal. Yes, and when Idid, when I did the song with
him on his album After Dark,I just saw him on the cruise and
(37:37):
he said he wanted me to workwith him again for the second one.
And I was like, no,yeah, I'll be there. Yeah,
yeah, here, that's try.That's right, he's a he's so good.
I mean just you know, justeverything that he's worked. I really
(38:02):
loved and loved and loved things.Definitely. But it's just so even though
that, you know, will youconsider maybe working another track? Maybe,
like, yeah, I definitely will. I said I had I was going
to stop recording this year because youknow, I just have to focus with
(38:30):
and I don't I don't want tosound morbid, but with the way our
mortality has been shortened after COVID,yes, you know, you sit down
and you start to think, youknow, have I done what I wanted
to do for me? Have Idone what I wanted to do as a
(38:52):
as a mother with my children,as a wife with the mod you know?
So I've done a lot as faras for the fans, I've given
thirty two plus years, and Iwon't stop giving to the fans. But
I now, at this point intime, I have to say, Okay,
(39:13):
when are you gonna pull away alittle bit and take some time for
for yourself? Right? So,and I think that's what's coming up,
but I'm not. I'm not.I wouldn't say that I wouldn't try something
different if someone would to come upwith because uh, Jake Kwan and and
and Twilight, we were going todo something and then a lot of children
(39:36):
got in the ways. So maybeI'll hit them back and be like,
hey, what happened to that?I get on song we're supposed to do.
Let's sit down. Maybe you're ina couple of months or any something
like that, because you know itwill be interesting. It's it's nice that
it's I think I would look forwardto it. Honestly, I would do
definitely. I think I think ifanything, it'll be it'll be fun to
(39:57):
do something different. It will be, it will it will be. I
mean, you know, I'm atthe time. I like music in general.
I like music. I like alltypes of music. And sometimes you
look forward to something that little, something different. You know, and and
and you you already pay your youryour everybody knows who what you've been,
(40:23):
you know, your your career.I mean, it's it's okay to do
something different. It's okay. Ibelieve you know that is okay to agree.
M you know, I agree, and you know, like you mentioned,
I mean the world is crazy rightnow, and with COVID, a
lot of people passing away, alot of people. You know, things
(40:45):
are happening, and you know, why not do something for you? Why
not go ahead and just take aleap of faith and do it? You
know. And I consider myself thatbecause I never thought that I would be
doing little podcasts and little you know, never wildest dreams, and it just
(41:05):
happened and landed in my in myhands, and I'm like, you know
what, this is a sign. And I think that as the community,
Freestarck community, you know, there'sa lot of it is evolving and a
lot of branches, a lot ofnew people. Things are is you know,
why not why not? Yeah,I would be open. I'll be
(41:28):
like, what we at this point, at this point of my like age
wise, Yeah, let me enjoywhat's left of my time exactly, you
know, and enjoy it like enjoythe music, enjoy friendships, enjoy you
(41:51):
know, like there's no time fornegativity. It's just enjoying. I agree.
I was. As a matter offact, I was. Sapphi and
I we talk every day, ifnot every other day, and you know,
I always tell her, I said, you know, at this point
in our in our lives, girl, we should be like thinking of where
we're going to retire to where, you know, thinking of going to Italy
(42:15):
and just sitting there like two hitason the beach and join the sun and
yeah with the big hats and laughingand enjoying. Because why not? Why
not? Why why look at thepicture of two best friends sitting at the
beach and enjoying a good time. Why not be the picture exactly? Thank
(42:37):
you? Thank hey, And mydog agreed, Your dog agreed. Agreed,
Right girl, It's true. Andand sometimes things out of the blue,
just landing your hands and you're like, you know what we're gonna do
this song? And it was andit is in a in a better you
are in a better space and abetter time in your life that you just
calm, good energy. Why not? I I agree, listen, I
(43:02):
agree. I'm I'm always like lookingforward for new music and and and I
want, you know, like promotersand and just to keep booking all these
new people like mingle and just talkand have a good time. You know.
(43:22):
It's you know, I look forwardto going to a show and see
Legends and then the New School andand just a little bit in between.
You know, it's just as afan, I look forward to that you
know, but you know, butwill you would are you like, do
you have in mind of somebody inparticular that you would love to collabor collaborate,
(43:46):
maybe somebody from the new school now, you know, the new artists
come out coming out, I don'twant to. I've done stuff with jennyine
A. I love her. Yeah, she she really is. And as
far as collaborating, a lot ofpeople have come up to me, a
(44:09):
lot of the male artists that wantto do stuff. It just never gets
to the point where we can seta date or we can you know,
let me write something for you.I I've only written a handful of songs
myself. Writing is not my mystrong suit. Mm hmm. But I
(44:34):
don't know, but a line ina hey, I'm open to it,
you know, I'm open to youif if, if they come up to
me and ask whatever. But atthis point, I'm just like, you
know, let me finish what I'vestarted and and move on to the next
phase and that's it. Yeah.Yeah, I mean I always said about
(44:57):
collaborating because you know, there's somany people coming out, and people were
and I'm glad that a lot ofpeople are coming out with new songs.
Oh definitely. I was so thrilledwhen you came out with yours with Time,
and then now you mentioned about workingwith all these new things coming up,
and that's a blessing. And butalthough artists too are coming out with
some new stuff, and I'm kindof like, hey, when all that
(45:20):
time starting when I did Time,it kind of like lit a fire under
me again. So then after Time, I did walk Away, After I
walk Away, I just did thisone now that just came out. When
will our Hearts be together? Thoseguys I worked with on my first album
(45:42):
and we had we hadn't seen eachother for thirty years, my goodness,
and the contacted me. They werelike, oh, we have this song.
They kind of like it was writtenfor you. And again we went
there one day, we flew toJersey, went there, we finished the
song and it was over and donewith and then we it just came out
and it's doing very well and I'mcompletely excited with it. I love the
(46:04):
song. I love the message. It's funny because this genre, all the
songs have to do about love, and you know, we get a lot
of flak for it. People arelike, oh, it's that bubble gum
shit and this and that. Ohyeah, And I'm like, well,
(46:29):
you know, you can call itwhat you want, but at the end
of the day, is the typeof music that when you go to the
club and you hear the music comingout, if if it's an artist performing
it live on stage or the DJis playing it, you can close your
eyes and you can think, damn, I was with this person at that
time. I was hanging out withmy girls over here at that time.
(46:50):
Oh I remember I was pregnant baby, yeah, you know, And it's
great memories that come back to youm you know, as opposed to a
lot of these other songs, likewhen you hear Taylor Swiss songs, it's
all about her this and some she'slike the white she's gus, always talking
about excess and things. Yeah, and she's a great artist, a great
(47:14):
singer, but she's seeing other peopleand how they don't make you happy,
and how this friend of yours backstabbedyou and all kinds of ye. I'm
like, girl, come over here, the freestyle, girl, come over
here, freestyle. You need something, You need some loving, Yes,
you need some love it because that'sthe main thing about that. I think
that everyone loves freestyle because they can'tconnect. And even though that's like you
(47:38):
mentioned it, Oh, it's allabout love, and you know we do
need that. We do need thatnow they we do need that. Life
isn't all about love. We knowthat reality is reality. You have a
relationship, you have bad relationship, you have abusive relationship, you don't want
to deal with that. You havea lot of things that go wrong in
(47:59):
your life, but then you havea lot of good things that go wrong
in your life. Hold on tothe good stuff, not not the bad.
Get the sweet that thing out ofthe door like you were, you
know, sweeping the Yeah, it'strue, It's so true, and so
to the good. And that's whatI think. That's what I think freestyle
is to me, if I'm ifI were to define it, it would
(48:21):
be the good memories car the goodmemories stuck here in my head. That
yeah, as opposed to all thebad crap that's happened. I prefer to
to listen to the to the songsand and remember where I was, who
I was hanging out with, whatI wore that day, Let me look
(48:43):
at let me look at some fromthat time. You know what I'm saying.
That's what I for her to do. I prefer to to remember that.
You know, it's a Biggert sample. You know, Jesse b has
that song, you know, thethis is life, and it could be
it could be talked about love.It could be about family, my friends,
(49:07):
the same thing the new song fromthe Nasty Boys, just because I
they just it came out a coupleof weeks ago. But it's something about
the love between friends, the lovebetween you know, anybody in your life
that they going through things. Youconnect with that and it's all about Ada's
love. It's always it's about lovelyingThe bottom line is about love and we
(49:31):
all need this. This world needsit, honestly, definitely. I agree,
yeah to too too much, youknow, too much negativity, too
much people being angry and and youknow that's not my you know my opinion.
That's not the way of living liferight now, you know. No,
(49:51):
So this is when I when II leave this life, I want
real with a heart, knowing thatthat I didn't do wrong to anyone and
that I gave good memories to people. That's how I want, you know,
deserve not lay this thinking, ohmy god, I had to fight
(50:12):
this one and this one and no, my heart is clean, my conscience
is clean. I'm good. Yeah, that's it, that's it. Enjoy
it, men, new people, the new people out here, listen,
thank you. Let's just continue, let's continue to work, Let's enjoy life,
and and from there it good musicblossoms, good friendship blossom and it
(50:38):
Unfortunately, you know, I hopein the wish that the industry will have
more together unity in that sense.Unity in that sense. Yeah, you
know, because it's hard. It'shard, it's really really hard. So
just as a fact, pickup Tao, giving us some love, give us
(51:00):
some good love music, Like youknow, I I hope to. I
hope the next few songs that comeout are going to be just as well
received. There's some good things happening. There's there's shows coming up all over
the place. So you know, you've been a busy being. I'm so
(51:21):
I'm you've been a busy being.I'm so proud, I'm so so happy,
thank you, so happy with you. You know, I will take
that blessing until you know, untilit's done. I can add all sometimes
because not so much mad, notso much mad. I just I don't
(51:43):
like the fact that you know, there is there isn't unity, and when
when when people try to to unite, it always there's there's there's always something
that gets in between. And Ijust wish, yes, as a fan
myself of the genre and of otherartists, I wish that weren't so.
(52:06):
I wish that weren't the case thatyou know, there's always something that divides
it. It's such a it's sucha great genre, so many phenomenal performers,
artists, singers, vocalist and doeslaw your fans out there for freestyle
is incredible for over three Like I'ma huge fan of share, I'm a
(52:30):
I'm a huge fan of a lotof strong vocalists, Pat Benatar, Melissa
Etheridge, like I will see themeven if they sang I can't man do
yo because I love them as aperson as a fan. And there's a
lot of people in the industry thatI grew up listening to that I was
(52:53):
a fan of and I listened tothe music and some of them we don't
even speak anymore for whatever you knowreasons life through in there. But yeah,
I love listening to to the musicand once again, I loved,
I loved the memories that are connectedto that right, and we still can
(53:16):
talk about it until this day, about little things like that, you know,
and it's just amazing. I know, family and Korea, it could
be crazy and and and stressful, and but sometimes you you you have to
try to balance it the best wayyou know you can. You know,
have you ever felt that unbalanced whenit came to like Korea and family and
(53:40):
what's going on in the industry overall? Definitely, definitely besides your home life.
You know, I'm a mother,I'm a daughter, I'm a I'm
a I'm a wife, I'm agrandmother. Uh. Then I have my
nine to five. I'm a paralegal. So I have always worked my whole
(54:06):
life. I have never not worked. Just to perform. My nine to
five to me is my priority. The singing is like my ulter egos.
There was a point where I waslike, do I leave one and stick
with the other full time? Whatshould I do? And then I'm like,
(54:28):
you know what I've been I've beenbalancing both all this time. You
know, why why stop it now? Yeah, that's right, you know
I've been I've been playing. I'vebeen wearing all these hats for over thirty
something years, So why am Igonna throw it away now? I can
still do it until until I can't. And when I can't, then that
(54:51):
that'll be it. You know,I'm not trying to push it. It
is what it is. It'll happenwhen it happens. Until then, I've
got living. I'm going to keepon living and I'm going to enjoy the
people around me, you know, and and uh way, you know that
is amazing, amazing, because youknow, it's just it's that you gotta
(55:15):
balance, say, you gotta balance. You have to. You have to.
You know, if you don't,you're doing something wrong or this isn't
for you exactly exactly. So youknow, if you know, if that's
the type of advice you have forme, then you know, bless you,
thank you, But you gotta keepit moving, you know, have
(55:38):
you do you remember any of thebest advice that you've ever gotten through your
whole career? Yep. And it'sthe advice that I try to give other
people when they ask me. Youknow, what advice should you give to
someone who's trying to break into themusic industry? Know you're in mm hmm,
(56:01):
yeah, know your information before youget into it. I was told
you need a tough skin. Youneed tough skin to get through this.
I didn't know what they meant forthe first I don't know, three four
(56:22):
years. But then I started gettingit and I was like, oh,
this is what they meant. Okay, So I donned on the hard skin
and I kept them moving. Ikept them moving. You know, you're
not always going to please anybody. That's another thing they told me. You
(56:42):
know, some people are gonna likeit, some people are not gonna like
it. You gotta know whether youlike it exactly, like amen, then
you get it out there. Ifyou don't like it, then how do
you expect someone else to like itexactly? Yeah? Yeah, it is
what it is. That's how itis, and that's how you got to
be and keep going forward no matterwhat. Keep going forward and matter why.
(57:07):
You're not always going to find youroptimal career. You're not always going
to it's not always going to fallin your lap. You're not always going
to win the lottery of you knowwhat you want to do, and if
you can't, then do the bestof what you have until you can get
to that point. That is sotrue, and it's easier said than done.
(57:29):
But at least give it a try, Give it a try, and
that's you know. And and Ithink when you mentioned that just now,
I think about all the new people, knew autists, new people with you
know, that want to have theirsongs that the music heard. You know,
you have to give it your own. It's not easy. A lot
of people think that it's just oh, I'm going to throw a song and
(57:52):
oh yeah, you know, I'mgoing to be like, no, it's
not. It's hard work. Andit's even harder now mm hm, yes,
I but me personally, and Iknow a lot of people probably disagree,
but I believe it's even harder nowbecause of all the conflict. Yes,
in the genre. If you ifyou're not clicked in with the correct
(58:14):
crowd, you're not gonna get anyof your stuff listen to. That's true.
That's true, you know. Soyou have to be humble. I'm
not saying be a politician and sayyes to everything and agree with everybody,
because sooner or later you're gonna haveto make a choice exactly. But the
side of the fence that you're goingto be on, you get me in
(58:34):
the middle. So always be humble. Know who you're dealing with no know
your facts, know everything about thismusic industry because it's there's so many aspects
to it that it'll it'll you startlooking like the exercis because your head's going
around spinning. Oh my goodness,I could imagine. I could imagine.
(58:55):
You know, you gotta know whento throw punches, and I mean figuratively,
not physically. I went to doa punch and want to hold them
back, you know, because noteverything, not everything deserves a fight,
Not everything deserves a big argument forthe whole world to see on social media.
Exactly exactly, keep yourself to yourselfand that's it. Yeah, no,
(59:19):
because now you know, it's Internethas it's playing such a big role
in everyone's career right now. It'sit's I don't even listen to the radio.
Is that crazy? I don't.I haven't listened to the radio in
such a long time because everything isyou know, Spotify, Pandora, you
know all this this, uh andstream yes, streaming things, and it's
(59:46):
it's just tough. It's different.I don't even you know, it's so
much the Internet has changed the musicindustry and a whole like in a whole
new you category. I don't evenI could never explain it has this It
has as good and it's bad becauseas far as bad because of the streaming.
(01:00:09):
You know a lot of artists havelost millions in revenues. Oh yes,
yes, but it's good for thosewho don't have any other means of
getting the music put out, sothey'll go on YouTube, put this stuff
out there and hopefully people will seeit and like them and follow them.
(01:00:29):
It has its good and it's bad. I think it's I don't know,
it's just I completely disagree. Hasso hard, and a lot of people
are doing their own music at home. I mean, you you become your
own distributor, you become your ownyou know, your self advocate on everything.
Sometimes you don't even need to besigned to any record label. Now
(01:00:52):
everybody's doing their own thing, andthey they they doing it in the internet.
I mean they talk is a bigthing. Facebook, They do all
these lives and and you know, people are listening, people are getting into
like oh man, you know, like I like this vibe. You know,
but like you said, they havelost a lot of revenue unfortunately.
(01:01:16):
Yeah, you know, And butit's just it's crazy. It's just crazy.
How how you know the world. It has evolved. I think that
the big world of the night isevolved, you know, it's everything.
It's like it's evolving everything. Yeah, it is, you know. It's
(01:01:36):
we've gone through major changes as asa as a humanity and whole. We've
gone through some scary times that ourgeneration had never seen. But the generations
before us, they went through theirown stuff, you know, the Spanish
Position, the Black Plague, allthese big things, you know. To
(01:01:58):
us, it was COVID just droppingpeople left and right. People went into
some severe depressions being stuck in thehouse for weeks on and for months on
it some even for years, juststuck in there, like not knowing what
to do. And I think thatkind of like messed with our psyche and
and and some people just kind oflike woke up, you know, and
(01:02:22):
said, uh, yeah, Ineed to I need to change my life.
I need to I need to dogood for myself and with myself.
No, that's wrong. Yeah,it all comes down like that's gonna pop
up again. Yeah, it's true. And it comes down to them do
what you love, do what youlove. Yep. At the end of
(01:02:42):
the day, you gotta do whatyou love, you know. So what's
next, What's next? I knowthat you have a couple of events coming
up, so yeah, what what'snext? I know this Friday is a
big show happening LMS, the LakeMary Special this Friday. The following Friday,
I have Imports Saint Lucy The ThreeTides. I'll be performing over there.
(01:03:07):
Then we have the on the sixteenth. I'll be at Cousins in New
Jersey, Marlboro, New Jersey,at the Welmont, New York. June
seventh. I'll be in Chicago atthe Hispanic Hispanic Festival June fifteenth. I'll
(01:03:28):
be in Queens July second, herein New York July, I have some
place September first, I'm it's inthe it's in the works. For Milwaukee.
I have July twentieth, in ChicagoSeptember. There's another show in September.
(01:03:52):
Then I have Columbia October nineteenth. Then I have Brazil fifteenth's second third
in November. So you know,I got to keep it going until my
legs just give out. And Isaid, and you listen, that's Walkers,
that's little You know what we gotthrough. We got brother in my
(01:04:14):
little cane, little canet. Idid a show. I did a show
with crutches one time. Really,Oh my god, I got hit by
I was riding my bicycle and Igot hit by a truck, a pickup
truck, Oh my god. AndI got a cut on my leg.
And the next day I had alreadyhad a contract to do wueggles out here
(01:04:39):
in Orlando. So the next dayI told my husband, go to Walmart,
