Speaker 1 (00:00):
I think something in the hills took my brother, and
I want to warn you all. Hi. Everyone. I'm not
usually one to post, but I've been reading this sub
and I finally got the nerve to share. I'm not
looking for attention or anything. I just want to tell
you what happened because I haven't been sleeping well since.

(00:20):
I'm going to explain it as clearly as I can.
I'm from Hidalgo, Mexico, a small town in the hills.
I grew up here. My family are farmers, very close.
There were four of us, my parents, me and my
younger brother, Tonio. Tonio was a fun guy, twenty two

(00:41):
years old, always joking around. He was braver than me,
loved wandering off into the hills to cut firewood or
explore caves. My mom used to scold him for going
too far alone, but he just laughed it off. Last October,
something changed one afternoon and Tonio came home really quiet.

(01:03):
His clothes were filthy, covered in dust. I asked him,
what the hell did you fall or something. He didn't answer.
He just gave me this weird look. My mum said,
wash your hands so we can eat. That's when he mumbled.
I don't want to go. We thought he meant he
didn't want to eat, but later we realized he meant

(01:26):
something else. That night, he wouldn't even sit at the table.
He just sat on his bed, staring at the window.
We shared a room. When I asked him what was wrong,
he spoke so quietly, you shouldn't go into the hills
at night. I laughed, told him everyone knew that, but

(01:47):
he looked terrified. Don't listen if it calls you. I
was creeped out, but I thought he was just messing
with me. The second night was worse. He woke me up,
talking to himself, saying, I already told you no, leave
me alone. His eyes were open but glassy. I shook

(02:07):
him hard. Tonio wake up. He snapped out of it
and started crying. He says, I have to go with him.
Who the man with the hat? That's when I went cold.
In our town, old people talk about El Charro Negro,
this spirit that lures people away in the hills. They'd

(02:27):
tell it to scare kids, but this felt real. My
dad got angry when Tonio told him, yelled at him
to stop with the nonsense. My mum just prayed and
sprinkled holy water on him. That night, Tonio was supposed
to sleep alone. I went to my parents room instead.
Every one was tense. Around three a m. We heard

(02:51):
the front door creak open. My mum screamed, Tonyo, don't go.
We ran out barefoot into the yard. He was gone.
His footprints were in the wet dirt, heading up into
the hills. My dad and I grabbed flashlights and ran
after him. My mom stayed behind, crying and praying. As

(03:12):
we climbed, we heard this awful whistle, long shrill, like
someone calling a dog, but it sounded like it came
from everywhere. At once, Tonio I yelled, come back. The
flashlights flickered. We fell silent, and then heard someone answer
from deep in the hills, I'm coming. But it wasn't

(03:35):
his voice. It was low and gravelly. My dad froze,
we're going back. I didn't want to. I was shaking,
but he dragged me. When we got home, my mom
was hysterical. Morning came and we went looking with neighbors.
We climbed up and down all day. We found his

(03:55):
cap in a clearing that was it. Civil Protection helped
search for days nothing. After a week they stopped. Said,
sometimes people fall and animals drag the remains off, but
we knew that wasn't it. An old man in town
told us stop looking. If the charo Negro called him,

(04:17):
he's gone. My mom still lights candles for him. My
dad doesn't talk about it. I left for a while
to stay in Patchuka because I couldn't stand being there.
Two weeks ago, I went back to visit my mom.
Slept in my old room. That night, I heard footsteps outside, barefoot,

(04:38):
slow in the dirt. I looked out the window. There
was a silhouette next to the cactus tall wearing a
wide brimmed hat. I couldn't scream. Then I heard my name,
clear as day, come back with me. I slammed the
window shut and covered my ears. Didn't sleep a second.

(05:00):
The next morning, I told my mum I was leaving.
Haven't been back since. I'm writing this to warn you.
If you're in the hills at night and you hear
some one calling your name, don't answer, even if it's
your brother's voice, because I still hear it in my
dreams and I'm scared I'll answer him some day.
