Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five The Fan.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
And Away we Go on a Wednesday. It is a Wednesday,
August twentieth edition of the Region one Sports Report. Him
Brian Yorke, I hope you're doing fantastic on this much
cooler and much welcomed cooler weather Wednesday. Man, oh man,
but was that crazy when those storms rode through sort
of last night? Were you a part of that? Were
(00:36):
you in an area where that happened? It was crazy.
I was going outside to vacuum out our swimming pool
and I walked outside and was like, never mind, I
don't think I'm gonna get a chance to I mean,
all of a sudden, it was just dark and windy
and cloudy, and here come the rain. And man, that weather,
that that temperature dropped in it, it was awesome. It
was awesome. I mean, unless you had any storm damage,
(00:56):
that's not awesome. But the cooler weather, the breeze, the wind,
everything really welcomed and really felt good if you stood
outside for a moment yesterday or last night or yesterday afternoon.
So the cooler weather back sports are back fall sports,
that is, and we are in full swing with the
brand new school year, which means we got a full
show today. We've got to go over scores from Monday
(01:18):
and Tuesday. I gotta get back in my routine here,
I gotta get back in my like I almost forget
how we do and what we do on the show.
Sometimes I gotta get back in the routine. So we
got scores to go over and report on from Monday
and Tuesday. Volleyball and soccer both underway. We'll get into that,
and we'll talk football rankings today. No, we're not doing
(01:39):
power rankings today. I know, I know it's much anticipated
and much debated when we do our power rankings. We're
not gonna do power rankings today. We're gonna talk about
what other people think of the teams in our region,
where they rank, where they fall, how things are standing
as they start a brand new football season. So we'll
get into that and ask the question if we've got toime,
(02:02):
who has the best rivalry in the region. Oh yeah,
I mean it is essentially rivalry week. You've got Battle
of the Birds, you got Rumble on the River. You
don't have Crosstown they played next week. That's fine, but
you got some good rivalries. Who's got the best one
in the region. When it comes to some of these
football games. We'll get into that as well if we've
(02:25):
got time today. So without further ado, let's do what
we do. Let's talk sports, let's talk scores. Let's go
over everything from Monday and Tuesday. Oh, by the way,
don't forget. You can get in touch with Region one
Sports social media as always on x formerly known as Twitter.
Just search Region one Sports on Facebook at Region one
Sports Report and by telephone. It's a strange new technology
(02:49):
that we have. You can text us, you can call
us that number two seven oh five three four forty
three eight. Again, that number is two seven oh three
four forty three eight. And we do have a few
texts on our new text line. We do, and I'll
get to those as we get to scores right now.
On Monday, in boys soccer, you had Calloway County over
(03:13):
Webster County for nil. In girls soccer, we had well,
nobody local. It was all second region, so just boy soccer.
On Monday, Calloway County again over Webster County for nil.
In volleyball on Monday, you had Ballard Memorial over Hickman
County three nothing, Mayfield over Calloway County three nothing, Murray
over Fulton County three sets to one, South Fulton over
(03:35):
Fulton City three sets to none, and University Hides over
Paduca Tillman three sets to one. That was volleyball. Those
are scores on Monday last night, and this is where
one of my texts came in. One of those texts
was about Murray soccer. It just simply said, Murray soccer
with the district went over Mayfield seven to one. It's
(03:56):
a great day to be a Tiger and a great
way to kick off the season. See sometimes that's all
it takes, just a nice little text to say, manam
was here's the score. It's fun not to be a
Murray fan. I bet it was so that came in
on the text line last night. Other scores from around
the region on your Tuesday in boys soccer. Sticking with that,
(04:18):
it was Calloway County over Paduca Tilman six nil, McCracken
County over Henderson County three to one, again, Murray over
Mayfield seven to one, and Ohio County tying Marshall County
three three. I know you know how I feel about tiz.
I don't like them. I don't like it, don't like it.
Go to the go to penalty shots. I don't care.
Just do something. Three to three. Your final there girls soccer,
(04:40):
you had Callaoai County over Paduca Tilman one nil. It's
a good win for Calloway County one nil. We'll be
talking to coach Stark coming up hopefully next week. We'll
try to work that out. It's it's been a minute, sorry, coach.
I'm working on it. I promise. It got a little
busy the last few weeks, busier than anticipated. But we're
going to get him on hopefully next week. But ca
Away with a win one nil over Paduca Tillman, Murray
(05:02):
where they went over Mayfield eight nil. In girls soccer.
On Tuesday volleyball from your Tuesday, it was Ballad Memorial
over Hickman County three nothing, Mayfield over Callaway County three nothing,
Murray over Fulton County three to one, South Fulton Tennessee
over Fulton City three nothing, and University Heights beat Paduca
Tillman three sets to one. That is a look at
(05:25):
all the scores from around the region from your Monday
and Tuesday. In soccer and volleyball. So that was kind
of cool, getting a getting at least one text on
the text machine saying hey, great to you know, here's
a score, and it was great for the Tigers. I
did get another text that just said Region one Sports,
and I just replied, yes, yes it is. But that
(05:46):
number again in case you need it, in case you
want it, and in case you feel like you've got
something to say, go ahead and say it. And you
can do that again to two seven oh five three
four forty three oh eight. Yes, I'm pushing that number
a lot because it's gonna take. It's gonna take a
village this season, right, go back to Monday show. I'm
not gonna re relitigate it. Go back to Monday Show.
(06:08):
But that number is gonna be vital, gonna be important.
It's an important tool to making sure we can take
what spotlight we have at Region one and shining it
across our great student athletes and their accomplishments all over
the region. So so write it down, memorize it, text it,
just text it to put it in your phone. I
don't care, but two seven oh five, three four forty
three oh eight. I'm excited for it. I'm excited for
(06:30):
it because I can't be everywhere, but you can. So
there you go. All right, let's scores from around the
region in soccer and volleyball. Nothing really standing out, and
we're not I know you want to deep dive into
soccer and volleyball. I know we've got our audience that
tunes in for that, because again it's it's coverage that's
been lacking in the region for various reasons. You go
(06:51):
back to Monday, but we're gonna deep dive into soccer
and volleyball next week. I've got a couple of soccer
coaches that are gonna come on that are gonna help
us do that at some point. Again, hopefully both of
them next week. And so when we get them on,
we will be diving in deep to their world and
their sport and give them their due. And again that
will hopefully be next week. In the meantime, it is
(07:14):
week one of football season and we are very excited
for that. We're very excited for these big rivalries, very
excited for some good football in this region. I was
going over and looking at this last night, some of
the preseason rankings from other publications. I mean You've got
one that I kind of like, although I disagree heavily
(07:34):
with some of their takes, is Nations Elite. You know,
they do a really good job of breaking it down,
making it simple, keeping it easy to navigate and read
on their social media post. I think they do a
good job as far as that goes. I don't always
agree with maybe how they view things. That's okay. You
don't always agree with me, and that's okay. But Nation's
(07:57):
Elite is one. And then you've got Bluegrass preps dot Com.
They still have won their preseason rankings, so we'll kind
of take a look at that as we get into
talking about some of these teams and some of these
games coming up on Friday, And I almost forgot part
of our conversation today is to look at all of
the teams in our region in football, look at their schedule,
and try to predict what their season might look like.
(08:19):
We'll do that in segment number two when we get
into this more deeply, more heavily, but looking at these
preseason rankings just a broad stroke, a broad view of
our region. We have got some good football teams in
the region. Somebody asked me last week, who's going to
be good this year, and I went lots of teams.
(08:40):
It's a good region for football this season. So just
taking Nations Elite because again we'll start with them. Just
taking Nations Elite, you go through some of the teams
in our region, their classes, and what they think of
these teams and of these classes. Nobody in Class one
A getting love getting ranked. That's okay. You go to
Class two A, Nation's Elite has Mayfield preseason ranked number one. Okay,
(09:07):
that might be maybe a spot too high, maybe, but
that's okay. I think a lot of other publications and
people feel it's Beechwood this year. They have always Borough
Catholic number two. That's also feels a little bit high.
It feels like Catholic might have lost a few players.
They've got LCA, like said Christian number ten. Again that
(09:30):
feels a bit low. So you see where I'm already
kind of having some issues. But Mayfield is ranked number
one in their eyes in Class two A. You go
to Class three A and you've got Murray ranked at
number three. So Murray makes the move to Class three
A and they come in getting a preseason love as
(09:51):
the number three team in that new class. I've seen
some publications that have Murray as high as two. I've
seen some that have them as low as five. But
what does that tell me that everybody views them as
a top five three A football team. Union County getting love.
They got voted on again. Some publications have them in
the top ten, some just outside looking in. But you
(10:13):
know that's gonna be that's gonna be the matchup Union
County and Murray. That'll be fun. But nonetheless, Murray getting
the love. You talk about teams in our region, who's
gonna be good? Well, Mayfield Again. According to some publications
like Nations Elite preseason number one and two A, Murray
moves to Class three A. They're preseason number three Class
four A. Paduca Tilman has been preseason ranked number six
(10:37):
in nations Elite. Bluegrasspreps dot Com has on number one.
I don't know, I think they're better than six, maybe
not one, but there's they're one two, they're one or two.
When you look at at guys that are still in
that roster, I get it. Lost their quarterback, lost some receivers.
They've still got d one talent. Four A is not
(10:59):
exactly a juggernaut. It's top heavy. It's top heavy, but
there's only two or three really good teams in four A,
and I think Tilman's one of them. So six a
little low, but they're it for four A. Then you
go to five A, and you know, five A, we've
got my Graves County Eagles. We've got Marshall County in
this region, well, Graves County on the outside looking in.
(11:21):
According to eight two Nations Elite, they did not make
the top ten. Neither did Madisonville, who's a district opponent.
Apollo did. That's a district opponent for Graves and Marshall
Owensborough did, that's a district opponent. So you've got Owensboro
at four, Apollo at seven, Madisonville and Graves County on
(11:42):
the outside looking in. I think District one five A
football is about as tough as it gets for anybody
in the state, much less one of the teams in
our region. Because bluegrasspreps dot Com they've got Apollo on
the outside looking in, They've got Madisonville and Graves, so
they've got three teams in that district in the top ten.
(12:04):
It's it's a brutal district. Apollo's better this season that's
what that tells me. I think Marshall Counties improved this season.
That is that district is gonna be tough. It's gonna
be tough. But Grave's County getting some love in some publications,
getting getting kind of dissed in others. That's five A
and then six A. The only team in our region
(12:24):
is Mucracken County. And get this, Mucracken County voted number
eight in six A football on Nations Elite. I don't
think they got votes on the Bluegrass Preps poll, so
they were not in the top ten, but they're number
eight on Nations Elite. So there you have it. Who's
gonna be good in the region. We think several teams
(12:48):
In fact, Nations Elite even does their top twenty five
regardless of class, and in that top twenty five they
have Mayfield at number ten. So that's what they think
of two A football that their preseason ranked number one
team is actually the tenth best team overall in football
in the state. They've got Tilman at number twenty, which
that's just low. It's low, and then they've got Murray
(13:09):
at number twenty five. So there you go. Take for
what that's Worth. There's that, all right, gotta take a break.
We will, We'll come back. We've got more, plenty more.
This is Region one. Sports.

Dive readon on sports as we move along on your
Wednesday edition of the show, talking some high school football
and getting ready for Week one of the football season.
Good games on tap this week. We're talking in the
(15:47):
last segment about some of the preseason rankings and how
we've got good teams this year. I like the fact
a lot of these teams are going to match up
against each other through the first four or five weeks
of the season. You're gonna have Graves play Murray to
have a you know, consensus top ten five A football
team in Graves County go to now three A, but
(16:08):
top two or three in their class Murray. You've got
Murray taking on Apollo this week. That's a team that's
been considered top ten in five A. So you've got
a lot of good matchups. You've got Rubble on the
River you've got Puduka Tilman, unbeaten last season, undeniable in
their run to the state championship, looking for the repeat.
(16:31):
And they start off with McCracken County, a surging Mustang
squad that by some publications is ranked in the top
ten in Class six A football. Again, it's been a minute,
McCracken County, welcome back to those rankings. So there are
good teams, there's good matchups, there's good rivalries. But let's
make predictions. Not on Friday night's game. We'll do that
(16:51):
on Friday. But let's go team by team, schedule by schedule.
Let's look at who they've got, Let's look at strength
of schedule. Let's debate who's got the best schedule in
the region. You know, you know I'm a big stickler
for play the right schedule. I think some teams are
playing up. I think some teams are playing the right schedule.
Some teams may be playing down. But let's talk about it.
(17:12):
Let's make predictions. Let's start in order, because if we don't,
I will never get there. But let's go to Class
one A football and start with the Fulton County Pilots.
This is a football team that won one game a
season ago. It was a sixty two fourteen thumping of
Callaway County on the road at Calloway County. That can't happen, Lakers,
(17:35):
It can't happen the Fulton County Last season they gave
up points. You know again, they played a lot of
small schools, but they gave up points. Had a battle
with Ballard Memorial at home. Lost that game forty two
to thirty four. But you kind of see where the
struggle was. It was stopping the other team's offense. Now,
the good news for Fulton County this season. They return
quarterback Preston Smith. He'll be a junior this season, and
(17:58):
they do return to Various Freeman, their top running back
from a year ago who averaged about seventy yards a game.
Freeman will be a sophomore this season, so he did
some damage as a freshman. They do lose top receiver
in Damian Hill, but two out of three ain't bad.
They've got some guys back. So let's take a look
at the schedule this season. They start off week win
Glease in Tennessee. This is a game they lost last
(18:21):
season thirty four to twenty eight on the road. This
game's at home. Let's go ahead and say they win
that game, just for all intents and purposes. Then they
play South Fulton at South Fulton. That's a game last
season they lost forty seven to six at home. Okay,
probably still an underdog in that one. Calloway County at home.
(18:42):
This is a game Callaowai County needs to win. Like
if Callaway County is gonna put any wins on the
board this season, it's got to be this one. But again,
Fulton County won this game pretty convincingly last year. Then
they've got TBA. I heard that's a tough opponent. There
is a TVA listed on their schedule. I'm sure that's
worked out somewhere else, but according to what I've got TBA,
(19:04):
don't know who that's gonna be or what's going on
there for September twelfth, then Greenfield, Tennessee. They did not
play Greenfield last season. Lake County Tiptonville the following week.
They did not play Lake County last season, So new
opponents this year. Caverna October third starts off their district play.
That was a sixty to twelve loss a year ago,
(19:27):
so you kind of see where things might be headed there.
Then they played Ballard Memorial on the road. I'll just
go ahead and tell you I think they get Ballard
this season. I think this is a game Ballard needs.
Then Ballard barely got last season, and Ballard lost some
of those top guys they had from a year ago
back to transfer. Then let's see Russellville the week after that.
This is a game last season they lost forty to twelve,
(19:50):
and then they end their season with Trigg County. So
what do we think of Fulton County schedule?
Speaker 4 (19:55):
I like it?
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Do I see more than one win on this? That's
the thing. Are you going to be better than last season?
One win over under is one? Do they go over? Yes? Yeah,
I think they get three wins. I see three could
be a path to more. We'll find out, but at
least to start. If the over under is one, I
think I think Fulton County will be a better football
(20:18):
team this season. That's Fulton County. What about Ballard Memorial.
The Bombers one year ago put up some numbers. In fact,
the Bombers one year ago went won four games. Not
a bad season for Ballard Memorial, A four and seven
season under coach Hedges. I've been told they lost some
guys to transfer, and including quarterback Blair Says, who was
(20:42):
their entire offense last season, says was I mean eighteen
hundred yards passing, he was averaging seventy seven yards rushing
on the ground. He did everything but catch the football.
He's gone. That's a big loss at a small school.
I think I counted twenty two kids in the in
the photo and the team picture, which means they'll be
(21:02):
dressing about eighteen of those because not all twenty two
will end up dressing for injury or whatever it may
be throughout the season. So that's what you're dealing with.
Let's look at the schedule. Week one, they've got Todd
County Central, didn't play them last season. Then they played
Joe Burns Cedar Hill, Tennessee. Week three is Massac County, Illinois.
Week four is Callaway County. Then they've got Charleston, Missouri,
(21:24):
South Fulton, Tennessee, Russellville, Fulton County, Caverna, and Meuhlenberg County.
Now they lost to Bilenberg last season, thought that might
have been in probably should have been a win. Meehlenberg
not great, So you take that into consideration losing the
offensive production they did, it might be a tough year
for Baller Memorial. This is a team that again went
(21:46):
four and seven last season. So the over under is four.
I don't think they meet the over. I just just
don't see it. Can they get to four? Can they
break even from the win total from last season? I
don't know. I don't know anything about Joe Burn Cedar Hill, Tennessee.
I don't know much about Massac. Massac beat them forty
four to twenty eight last season. So I'm gonna say
(22:07):
they're it's at at Massack. Ballard gonna be an underdog
in that one. You know, Todd County Central just trying
to kind of look, that's that's Week one. That's this
week's matchup. That was a two win team last season.
So again, if you're a Ballard football fan and you're curious,
are they a four win team? Are they gonna meet
that standard? Are they gonna go over under? I think
(22:28):
Week one will tell you that you're playing a team
that was two wins from a year ago. If you
if it's close, if you win, all right, maybe maybe
on the right path. If you lose, lose bad might
be a tough year, but the over under from from
last year was four Ballard's just that's just a tough
school to kind of read the pulse of right now,
(22:51):
we'll see that's one a football. Let's go to a football.
Let's go the only school in the region now in
to a football that we that we listen, that we
cover in our coverage area. This is the Region one
Sports report and that is the Mayfield Cardinals. The Mayfield
Cardinals a year ago posting a nine and three record,
(23:14):
making it to Week three of the football playoffs, losing
to lca SO nine in three. A season ago, losing
for the first time in a long time to Graves
County in Week one, it was just a little bit
of a different year. But they've got their dudes back.
It's a veteran team. This is a senior laden team.
(23:35):
There's a reason they are preseason ranked number one or
two in that class and considered a high contender. Once again,
the tradition, the roster, it is what it is at Mayfield,
and it's very good again this season. So you look
at a nine win season a year ago and you ask,
like we've been doing over under is nine wins based
(23:57):
on last season, do they meet it, do they exceed it?
I think they exceeded this season. Again, I don't want
to give away Battle of the Birds just yet. We'll
talk about it on Friday. I think that's going to
be a better game than most people predict. But you
expect Mayfield to be the favorite and win that game.
It's at home. They own the series, that's what you expect.
(24:19):
They play Christian County a week two. Christian County is
not a good football team. That should definitely help them out.
Tillman in week three I think will be a better
football game this season. It's on the road. I don't
know that was a loss a year ago. So let's
just say you've already made up the Graves County game.
That's two and one. Then you've got McCracken at home.
(24:40):
McCracken considered a top ten team in six A football,
not going to be an easy out. Cranney County's good.
You're better Todd County. Central, you're better, Caldwell County you're better.
You're better than Tree County, you're better than Fort Campbell,
and you're better than Central. So yeah, I think they
definitely go over non wins this season. Maybe even go
(25:02):
over none wins in the regular season, they at least
get to non wins. Tilman's tough. It's tough to predict
Graves of McCracken or the the other two. You gotta
worry about outside of that. You got this win, win
a playoff game. Based on your regular season schedule, you
get to non wins or more so, I'll take the
(25:23):
over for Mayfield this season. That's two A football in
our region. Let's go three A football. Murray High, looking
at you, the Tigers a year ago. Coach Cunningham squad,
very good season, eight and four from a year ago.
And here's the deal. They got a lot of dudes back.
(25:45):
Listen lost Jeremiah Jones, d one player, top player in
the nation. Like that's that's tough to overcome. But they've
got Martin back, They've got their quarterback back, they've got
Tristan Dennis back, They've got they got the good, they
got dudes. They start off this week with Apolo. That
is tough. Going to Apolo and getting a win is
as tough as it gets, especially Apolo, who is much
(26:09):
better this season. And they've got dudes. I don't know
so again, last year's win total for Murray. That's what
we're doing here. Over under last year they go eight
and four. The question is do they at least meet
that go over go under? Apolo is gonna be tough.
Week two, you got Callawi County, Yeah, that's you. Week three,
Graves County, it's at home. But I don't know if
(26:29):
you're the favorite. We'll see. Marshall County is better this season,
but that still should be a game. You feel good
about Russellville, you know that's a good one a football team,
but you're three a football. You're big boy football now,
you should feel good about that. Then McCracken County on
the road, that's tough, Webster County on the road, you're
the favorite. Union County on the road, they might be
(26:51):
the favorite. You might be ranked higher, but that's on
the road at Union County always tough. Hopkins County Central
and Caldwell County. You should be the favorite in both
of those games. So you're at least the favorite in
let's say one, two, three, four, five, six, six games,
so that's six wins were six games or you're the favorite.
(27:11):
That should be you. You got to steal two more along
the way. Including a playoffs. So yeah, over under eight
wins for Murray, I'll take the over. I think they
are a very good football team. I'll take the over.
It may be by a gamer a win or two,
but I'll take the over for Murray. All right, let's
take a break up against it. We'll take that. We'll
(27:32):
come back. We'll talk the rest of the teams in
the region. Right here, it's Region one Sports.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Your Schools, your Report, the Region one Sports Report.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
Ridge one Sports. As we move along on your Wednesday
edition of the show, going essentially team by team and
taking the over under based on last year's win totals.
Are they going to be better than last season as good?
Maybe having a down year. Well, we've gone through classes
one A, two A, and three A in the region.
Let's look at Class four A and we start with
(28:14):
Callaway County. New head coach this season in Kobe Lewis,
coming over from Paduca Tillman, and coach Lewis has got
some rebuilding to do. A winless football team a year
ago in Callaway County, they really struggled and as much
as they struggled offensively and it's it's look, this is
just reality. They did Man. They struggled defensively. They only
(28:36):
had two games a year ago where they held an
opponent under forty points. They give up thirty nine to
Tree County and thirty six to Crittin County. So just
very very tough on the defensive side to get stops
last season. But again we'll see what a head coaching
and a culture shift or change that may have brought
(28:56):
to Calloway County. Let's look at the schedule. They start
off with Webster County, that was a thirty nine to
twenty one loss a year ago. They've got Murray in
week two. They've got Fulton County in Week three, which
was a surprising blowout loss last season. They faced Ballard
Memorial after that. That might be where you get a win.
We'll talk about it. Warren, East, Logan County, Franklin, Simpson,
(29:19):
Allen County, Scottsville, Paduka, Tillman, and Marshall County. So for
being honest, again, the over under is zero. You can't
go under. So can you get a win this season?
Can you get a couple of wins this season? I
think they get can get one win? I think, But
then again I don't know. I mean Ballard expected to
be down, but considering where Calloway was last season, I
(29:43):
don't know how much more of a favorite Calloway may
be in this game. Fulton County is going to be
the favorite at Fulton County again. Fulton County has got
some dudes back. They beat you decisively last season. They
will be the favorite in that game. So if you're
looking at at Callaway's schedule, the one game that could
be a push or at least push in their favor
(30:04):
as Ballad of Memorial everything else, they're going to be
the underdog. I will take the over. I think they
get a win. Would be amazing and excited for them
to get more than one win. But I do think
they they don't go winless two years in a row
or winless in year one of coach Lewis's tenure. Do
they get more than one? I hope I really do.
(30:28):
All Right, that's Callowi County. What about the other team
in Class four to eight, Paduka Tillman, Well, you can't
go over the win total from boy talk about two
teams in just complete opposite directions. Calloi County. We just
talked about winless last season. They can't you can't take
the under. You gotta take at least the over, and
(30:48):
can they be better and improved from a year ago?
And then you go to Paduca Tilman, who can't. You
can't take the over. You gotta take at least the under,
or say that they're gonna be just as fifteen and
oh a year ago a state title run. And you
know the deal. By now, I mean they lost some guys. Listen,
this is a Tilman team, obviously losing their quarterback, the
(31:10):
catalyst of the offense in Jack James. They lost Campbell,
they lost Perry. I mean, they lost some playmakers. They did,
they did. They lost a lot of good skill guys.
But they got some good skill guys back, including running
back DeMarcus Wilson, who really stepped up and was a
big part of that offense last season. So let's look
at their schedule. McCracken County in Week one, Graves County
(31:32):
in Week two, both on the road, by the way.
Then they're home against Mayfield. Hello at Madisonville. I like it, man,
I like it, pushing your team. And then they've got
Franklin Simpson, Allen County, Scottsville, Logan County, Warrnees, Callowy County,
and Christian County. Here's the deal. When they get past
week what five, when they get past Madisonville, they run
(31:58):
the table. At that point, they're the favorite in every
single one of those district games. They run the table.
Nobody is gonna challenge them in that part of the schedule.
The first part of the schedule. I mean, listen, a
cracking that can be a game on Friday. I'm not
sleeping on that one. Tilman's the favorite. Not gonna sleep
on the cracking. Graves County at Graves, Tilman may go
(32:20):
into that game as the favorite. Again. You know I
love my Eagles may Field at home. There you go,
I mean that again. And then Madisonville. I mean last
year's team, not only did they run the table, they
ran everybody off the field. That's not gonna happen this season.
They're gonna be better than most of their opponents, probably
(32:41):
still the favorite in every one of those games. They're
not gonna run teams off the field, necessarily so undefeated
state championship. I don't think they go undefeated this year.
In fact, I'll go ahead and say it, They're not
gonna go undefeated. This season, win a state title very well,
could very well. Four A is wide open. Run the
(33:04):
table in the regular season, Oh man, I think there's
one blemish in there somewhere. Somebody's gonna get them Mayfield, Graves,
maybe at Madisonville. At Madisonville is not an easy place
to go. Get a win at mccrack and to start
that somebody, It just feels like somebody's gonna get them.
So I'll take the under, but I'm still not sleeping
(33:25):
on Tilman as possibly still being the overall best team
in this region. That's four A football. Let's talk five
A football. Let's start with the Marshall County Marshalls, who
I do think will be improved this season under coach Bloodworth.
Their schedule this season Critney County, Caldwell County, Trigg County, Murray.
(33:46):
Then they get in district play Madisonville, Muhlenberg County, Owensboro,
Graves County, Apollo, and then they finished with Callaway County.
I think they are the favorite non district wise. I
think they're the favorite against Callaway obviously, at the end
of the year, I think they'll be the favorite against
Muhlenberg County. They gotta go to Muhlenberg, but that's in district.
(34:08):
I think they'll be a favorite, so that's two. At least,
I'll give them the favorite. I think they'll be the
favorite against Trigg County at Trigg I do, I just do.
Caldwell County's kind of that's to you. Maybe probably not
the favorite against Critney County. They're good. So you're at
least the favorite in four or five games this season.
For sake of argument, remember Marshall County won three games
(34:30):
last season. So for sake of argument, let's say you're
the favorite in four games. The over under is three.
Do you get four wins? I think so? I do?
I think so? Do you get five wins? There's a
path absolutely if you are better and we're hearing good
things out of camp and out of the preseason. Your
schedule is not exactly set up to where you can't
(34:53):
get to five wins. Here's the key, though, do you
get to that elusive six win You know Marshall County
kind of year after you he is a three win team.
Occasionally they sneak up to four and five wins, getting
to six wins getting that winning season. Is this the
year they do it? I don't know. I can't you know.
You're not the favorite against Graves. You're not the favorite
(35:14):
against Apolo. Owensborough is as good as it gets in
the state. Madisonville, you're not the favorite. That's at least
four games. You're not the favorite and are expected to lose.
Probably not the fac Now again, if you sneak in
and you get a week one win at or at
home against Critney County and you end up with Cadwell
County NTRY, and you're three and oh going into the
(35:34):
Murray game. You beat Muhlenberg, that's four. You beat Callaway,
that's five. You've just got to still a win somewhere else.
I don't think it's gonna be against Murray, it's not
gonna be against Owensboro. You gotta still a win against
Graves or Apollo. But yeah, over under is three. They
definitely go over. They get to four, can they get
(35:57):
to five? Maybe? Can they get to six? Seeing it,
but we'll see. That's Marshall County, Graves County last season,
a great year, a lot of senior skill guys, a
lot of seniors on that team. Period. They willed themselves
to a win over Mayfield in Week one. This is
a Graves County team that ended up You would think
(36:17):
I would know off the top of my head, but
I have slept since then. They got no. They ended
up nine in three, one of the best teams in
the class all year. A nine win season, which is
a big year for Graves County football to get to
nine wins. The nine win season nine in three with
losses to Paduka, Tillman, Owensboro and then to the playoffs
(36:39):
to South Warren. It's not bad looking at their schedule
this season. Mayfield at Mayfield, We're not the favorite. I
hate to say it, We're not Paduca Tilman at home.
Tilman's probably still the favorite in that one. Yeah, Murray
on the road, we may go in as the favorite,
but that again, they're a top team in the Class
(37:01):
Union County at home, there are no weeks off, there
are no give mes, there are no running clock in
our future. In the first four weeks of the season.
This is you're gonna find out who you are, and
you're gonna find out immediately. A tough four weeks. Owensborough, Yeah,
(37:21):
that's good. Madisonville at Madisonville not easy. Apollo at Apollo,
they are a very good football team this season. Marshall
at Marshall an improved team. Mulberg County is still not good.
There you go, there's your one absolute probably gonna get
to that running clock, and then McCracken County they're better.
This is a barutal schedule for the Eagles, who, by
(37:42):
the way, I think given though, graduated a lot of players,
and they did graduated a lot of skilled players, and
they did the skill positions. I'm not worried about quarterback.
New quarterback, first year starter at Graves might take a
minute to kind of ease in, and you're not gonna
have a minute. You've got Mayfield and Tillman out of gate.
I think the running game will be good this year.
(38:03):
I think the receivers good luck. They're as talented as
it gets. Defensively, I like some things. Graves has got
to show us out of the gate with Mayfield what
the line is like. But you're talking over under nine
wins a year ago. Do they go over this season?
Hear me out. They're going to be as a good
football team, maybe even as good as last season at least,
(38:27):
But that doesn't necessarily translate to nine wins because the
schedule is so so tough, and I love it. I'm
not doubting it. I love it. Over under nine. I
don't think they go over nine dep I don't think
they go over nine. Under nine most likely again, not
because of them, if they're good or bad, because their
opponents are so good this season and the schedule so tough. Last,
(38:49):
but not least, McCracken County, the Mustangs and improved teams
six wins a year ago getting love in the preseason
Top ten six wins from a year ago. So let's
look at this season's schedule. Paduka, Tillman, Logan County, Northeast,
that's Clarksville, Tennessee, Mayfield, Union County, Murray, Hopkinsville, Christian County,
(39:14):
Henderson County, and Graves County. Again, the question over under
on six wins. I think they could get to six
wins again. I think they could go over this season.
Not the favorite against Tilman, still expect that one to
go against them. Logan County. I think they get that one,
although they have to go to Logan County Northeast. Clarksville
(39:36):
don't know nothing about them. Mayfield not the favorite, Union
County probably not the favorite. Murray again probably not the favorite,
but a chance. Remember Murray got them last season. Hopkinsville
on the road. I think they're better. Christian County they're better.
So that's a few more wins. Henderson County always the one,
and then Graves County. It's a tough schedule. Getting six
(39:59):
wins last this season was a great accomplishment over under.
I don't know if they go over. I don't necessarily
think they go under. I think they're gonna kind of
repeat a little bit of last season again, not because
of them, but because of the schedule. It's just tough.
It's tough when you get to six a football and
it's tough because we're out of time. I am way
out of time. That's it for today. Hope you've enjoyed.
(40:23):
We'll be back on Friday. We will preview, breakdown and
predict Friday Nights games, talk who's got the best rivalry,
and more. Until then, this has been Region one Sports
