Speaker 3 (01:01):
But do guys, last night, if you were out and
about the sporting event after man, it couldn't have gotten
better truly compared to the last few weeks, compared to
what every ringing wet with sweat while just setting in
the stands and watching your kids play.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Last night was phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
The weather's great early football season. So hopefully you're in
a good mord because I am that We've got a

Get into today because they want.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Scores to go over Big Girls soccer match last night
and we'll talk about deal and we'll bring it.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
All tonight's game, break it down and give.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Our pr the show as we get the day the
great I will say for you know, I gave out
the text machine number early.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
That's been phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
By the way, the response to this show returning this
week has been phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
To downloads sky rocket Is it's been one of our
best weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
You're the last Girl, the Summer Days first weeks, it's
been one of the best week Pizza ever in terms
of downloads. And then you know, we introduced this every
for you to be contact, communicate with with me whatever.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
The pizza, and that's been.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
It's been a lot of fun messages there, here and
there a week, it's been a lot more fun text
machine disposal and you guys take advantage and I want
you to. It's not bothering me, like, don't ever and
(02:38):
I'm sure you don't care, but don't ever worry, Like, man,
I'm going to send a text and I don't even
get an alert. It's when I check it, if that
makes sense. So it's not like blowing up my phone.
It's not something that like, I'm like another text and
I do check it. I will check it every couple
of hours, every hour or so throughout the day periodically.
(02:59):
So it's not exactly blowing me up if you text me,
but we have been blown up via the new text
line lots of great I mean everything in between, given
me information about cross country that we'll talk about next week,
giving me information about a soccer match, you know, all
of that kind of stuff, to just simply saying glad
(03:20):
the show's back me too, thank you for that. Had
a really sweet message earlier this week it was finally
Region one Sports has returned, and I can complete my
daily podcast listening.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
It's very sweet of you, very kind. So we've had
all of that.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
We've also had people complaining that high school football pick
them is not a thing on West Kentucky Star this year.
It's not high school football pick them is not back
on the start of this season, the first time, by
the way, in a long I mean, we've this is
season eight. This is our eighth year of doing Region
(03:57):
one Sports. I don't remember a year we didn't do
high school football pick them. We've used that as a
tool for us every year we've done the show, and
it didn't return this year.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
I don't know the full story.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
I would assume that it is mostly because they did
not get enough or maybe even a big enough sponsor
to do it. You know, they give out weekly prizes
and then a grand prize at the end of the
season for the best you know at picking.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
That to me is the explanation.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
I didn't ask directly, but I would assume it just
did not have the sponsorship this season, which for me
was like, who cares, Let's do it anyway, because it's
fun and I like playing, and I like seeing the results,
and I like seeing kind of how the wind is
blowing across the region. So it's not I'm as upset
as you are that it's not back, but it's not.
(04:49):
We'll play our own version here on the show. We'll
do it every week. Listen if you want to keep
a scorecard at home, keep a scorecard at home, play
along with the show. But I don't know what else
to tell you. I'm as upset as you are. But nonetheless,
thank you for all the texts. Like I said, everything
in between, from Haywhere's Pickam? To Hay Glad the Show's
back to Hey here's this thing, this happening. That number again,
(05:11):
by the way, two seven, o five three four forty
three eight. I've got it committed to memory. Now that's
how much I like it. Now, let's do what we
do on Region one sports. Let's talk high school sports.
A lot of scores to get into from last night,
and then we will kind of lead off after that
(05:31):
with a big, big girls soccer win last night. So
you're ready, I'm ready, let's go. Let's first start with volleyball.
Volleyball from your Thursday. Ballard Memorial over Cca three sets
to none, Carlisle County over CFS three sets to none,
Fort Campbell beat Paduca Tilman three sets to none. Fulton
County over Lake County. That's Tiptonville, Tennessee, three to one,
(05:54):
Mayfield over Caldwell County three to two, and Murray over
Trigg County three sets to none. That is volleyball last night.
In soccer, we'll start with boys soccer. Marshall County over
Calloway County five to two. The Marshall's out to a
strong start this season, still unbeaten. Speaking of teams out
to a strong start, how about Murray. They blank Graves
(06:15):
County eight nil the final. There so two regional contenders
getting two big wins last night. Marshall over Callaway, Murray
over Graves. That's boys soccer. In girls soccer, it was
Hopkins County Central over Paduca Tillman seven to one. It
was Murray over Graves County nine to one. And I
(06:36):
don't know if you're ready for this, but it was
Calloway County over Marshall County one nil. Let's see, I
didn't think you could handle that. The lady Marshalls fall
to Calloway County one nil. This is big and this
is where we start. This is our lead for the
show today. The way we will end our first segment today,
(06:58):
Callawai County over Marshall County one nil.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
I can't say it enough.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Why because it hasn't happened often enough, in fact, a
rare win in the series. Now again, this is according
to KHSAA. So before anybody texts me today and says, well,
actually they won, this is according to that.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
So this is where the source comes from. This is
the first.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Win for Callawai County over Marshall County since twenty nineteen.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
In fact, that was a one nil game.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
On August twenty second, twenty nineteen, so nearly six years
to the day that Callawai last won, and nearly six
years to the day they did do it again with
the exact same score.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Crazy.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
In fact, according to KHSAA, this is only I'm gonna
count it again to make sure one two three. This
is only the third win for Callaway County over Marshall
County and girls soccer since they've been keeping track of it,
going back to two thousand and one. I don't know
what happened before that, but as of two thousand and
(08:07):
one to now, that's only the third win for Calloway
County over Marshall County. When we say things like historic
sometimes it's a little bit of hyperbole. This is not
that last night was a historic win. You put that
in terms of the players on that field who got
that win for Calloway County. The last time that happened
(08:30):
was pre COVID and the players that took the field
last night for both teams for that matter, but but
for Calloway County last night, the last time that school
got to win over Marshall County, those players were an
elementary school and again for just the third time since
two thousand and one.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
So yes, this is not hyperbole.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
That was an historic win for Calloway County, the Lady
Lakers out to a two and zero start on the season.
By the way, in that win last night, the lone
goal of the entire game coming from Anne Marie Arnette,
a freshman, that's right, a freshman who the last time
Callowai beat Marshall was in what third grade, and then
(09:11):
before that wasn't even born.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
I don't think so that's a big win. It's a
big win.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
We all know the Lady Marshall's that this region for
the most part, traditionally, historically and probably maybe even currently
kind of runs through Marshall County.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
You know, Dyl McCracken.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
They've kind of become the since McCracken's become a consolidated school,
that those are the powers, and that's not Calloway County
got it done.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
By the way.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
We'll talk to Calloway County coach Tim Stark next week,
in fact, trying to talk to him on Tuesday, so
that will end up being on the podcast on Wednesday.
I say, he's got something to talk about now. They've
got games between now and when we discuss things on Tuesday,
But I would say that'll be a very big point
of our conversation next week. Big win last night for
(10:03):
Callaway County, massive win. As far as the other scores,
as far as you know, everything else that kind of
happened last night. Everything else was kind of ho hum,
business as usual. Like I said in uh, girls soccer
last night, I mean, Calloway gets that win, Murray gets
a big win. Murray's you know, pretty strong again this
year on the girl's side. Hold on, I clicked on
(10:24):
the wrong team. I want to make sure looking at
the right team. Yeah, Murray's out to a three to
zero start. Calwey's out to a two o start, Marshall's
out to what a two to one start. I'm cracking
out to a two o start. Some good girl soccer
in this region really good again. We'll discuss that next
week and boys soccer again. Everything kind of went chalk
uh five two, Marshall over Callaway eight nothing, eight to zero,
(10:46):
Murray over Graves and then volleyball.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Everything kind of went as expected. So those are your scores.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
That's a look at at some soccer and some other
things here on Region one.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Gotta take a break.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
When we come back, we deep dive into week one
of the football season, and it's on the way.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
This is Reagion one Sports.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Region one Sports in for the deep dive. Time to
play in the game.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Reagion one Sports, your second segment here of our Friday
edition of the show, and just sipping on a little
coffee just on the commercial break. What I do, by
the way, in case you don't know, is I record
this between six am and seven am so that it
can air on the radio between seven am and eight
am and be on your podcast feed hopefully by eight am.
So as I record, what I'll do is I'll record
(11:41):
a segment, I'll put it all together. I'll go load
it what we call loaded into the system so that
it's ready to play later on. And then I'll come
back and I'll reset and I'll get ready and I'll
record another segment, do the same thing over. So technically
during the commercial break, technically in between segments, I was
sipping on the little coffee and I'm back to my
my struggles. If you're a longtime listener, you know I
(12:04):
struggle making good coffee in the morning. I just haven't
quite figured it out all these years. I love coffee,
haven't quite figured out how to make a you know,
coffee from home taste the way I want it to.
I think I cracked the coat a little bit today.
I think it just takes a lot of sugar, like
a ton of like, like whatever you think a lot
of sugar is, go ahead and add ten twenty percent
(12:27):
more to that.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I think that's what it is.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
I just maybe I just like sugar, but I don't like,
you know, my coffee black. I don't like you know.
I grew up when I was young, and I'm talking
five six years old, and this explains a lot about me.
My grandparents would let me drink coffee in the mornings.
Now again, they would take, you know, a thimble of coffee,
put a lot of milk and sugar in it. So
I was basically drinking warm milk and sugar water right
(12:52):
like it's with a little hint of coffee. So that's
kind of what I grew up on. So I think
that's what it is. I've just got to have a
ton of sugar and some milk and creamer and a
little bit of coffee, and here we go. It is
good today, though it's not great, it's good. So it
is football Friday. We are getting, in the football spirit
of things, a bunch of games tonight. I'll give you
the full slate of games, and then we'll go through
(13:13):
these kind of one by one. We'll talk about what
these teams did a year ago, kind of how that
matchup may look tonight, break it down, and then make
our predictions here on the show. And again, no, there's
no high school football pick them on West Kentucky Star.
You are not alone in your disappointment. I'm very, very
upset and disappointed by that. Out of the two or
(13:34):
three dozen text messages I got Wednesday, about a dozen,
maybe a little less. We're dedicated to where's high school football?
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Pick them?
Speaker 3 (13:44):
I'm upset too, it's not there. We'll do our own
pick them here on the show. But our full slate
of games for your Friday night. You've got the big ones,
the two rivalries tonight, Battle of the Birds Graves in Mayfield.
You've got Rumble on the River, Paduka Tilman and McCracken County.
Then you've got some other really good matchups, not rivalries,
but matchups. Murray goes to Apollo, Marshall County hosts Critton County,
(14:07):
Callowy County host Webster County, Fulton County host Gleason, Tennessee,
and Ballard Memorial hosting Tide County Central. So those are
the games we have tonight. Those are the games we
will focus on for the rest of the show here today,
we will start with the big ones. We'll start with
the rivalries. We'll start with I think the most underrated,
underappreciated rivalry game in the state of Kentucky. When you
(14:32):
look at the message boards, when you look at Bluegrass
preps dot com, you look at Nations Elite, you know
they give you their like a week one big rivalry games.
They don't even list this one. It's insane. I mean,
this is a community not divided, a community that is
just fuel of animosity in this game. And it doesn't
(14:52):
matter where the game is played. If it's played at Graves,
it's played at war Memorial, does not matter. Intense the
entire community, and I mean the entire community turns out
for it. The environment is always insane, it's always crazy,
and usually produces a pretty good football game.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
To me, this is one of the best rivalries in
the state.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
This is what a rivalry is now you'd like the
rivalry to be a little more even, especially us folks
on the Graves County side would like the rivalry to
be a little more even because it makes the rivalry more,
you know, better, and less usually predictable. But last season,
Graves County threw the wrench into it, right. They finally
(15:35):
broke the streak fifteen wins in a row by Mayfield
finally snapped last year as the Eagles got the win,
and it kind of gives you that feeling of see,
it can happen, and it can you know, it can
certainly happen again. So it does plant a little seed
of doubt that this is just a guaranteed automatic win
(15:55):
for Mayfield. Doesn't mean Mayfield is not the favorite this
game again at war Memorial. Mayfield's got a very senior
heavy team. Mayfield's Mayfield. Like, I mean, that's at the
end of the day. That statement kind of starts and
ends with the name of the school Mayfield. I do think,
I do think, and I know I get it. I'm
(16:16):
a Homer, I bleed blue. Let's go Eagles. I do
think Graves will surprise people this season. I think a
lot of people are discounting Graves. I think a lot
of people, not just in this game, but the season
in general, kind of counting Graves out. I think they're
going to surprise people because I think the skill players
are very good. I think the line has a chance
(16:36):
to surprise people, the guys up front, the guys in
the trenches. I think the defense can be good. Like
I think this is an Eagle team. The schedule is brutal,
and I'm not making excuses. It is a very tough schedule.
But I think this is an Eagle team where you
expect a fall off and a drop off, losing so
many seniors, losing a starting quarterback and one of the
(16:57):
top receivers in the class. And like, I get all that,
they've got a lot of dudes coming back. They got
a lot of dudes in that system that can play.
So I think that I wouldn't sleep on them too much. Now, again,
though fully admitting Mayfield's the favorite in this game, if
we had high school football pick them, you would see
that the majority of people will still be picking Mayfield
(17:18):
to win this game. And like I said earlier, more
often than not, in fact, pretty often this game goes
to Mayfield. Graves County is now six and twenty six
all time against their rival. Now back in the day,
Mayfield would win four, five, six in a row, but
Graves would at least keep them honest every handful of years.
(17:39):
In fact, the first time these two teams played back
in nineteen ninety three, Graves County won that game twenty
one to nine. Mayfield then ended up winning one, two, three,
four five in a row before Graves next win. But
you got the trend right, Graves would win, Mayfield would
rattle off three, four, five in a row, Graves would win,
(18:00):
Mayfield will drat all off three or four in a row.
Now Graves at one point in two. From two thousand
and four to two thousand and eight, they won it
every other year, So it did go back and forth.
OH four went to Graves, OH five went to Mayfield,
OH six went to Graves, O seven to Mayfield, eight
to Graves. Fun times, fun times, and then Mayfield ended
(18:21):
up going on a fifteen and oh stretch until last
year in which Graves County won that game thirty five
to twenty eight. And for the Eagles, when you look
at the guys that put up the stats, when you
look at the guys that helped get it done. Cayden
Gregory thirteen of twenty six, two seventy four, four touchdowns,
no interceptions. I think you know he ran in the
go ahead or the tying touchdown.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
I can't.
Speaker 3 (18:41):
I've slept since then, but had a big touchdown late
in that game. Kind of willed helped will Graves County
to a win.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
In that game.
Speaker 3 (18:48):
Lincoln Acory seven catches for one to seventy five, two touchdowns.
Again Gregory on the ground also fifteen carries sixty one
yards in a touchdown. Those guys are gone. They graduate.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
I get it. I get it.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
You know their quarterback, rob running back, England back, receivers,
Hoover Kirby back. I mean all their skill dudes are back, right,
so they come back with all their skill guys. They
come back with a lot of guys on the little
I mean, it's tradition, doesn't graduate. I get it. I
still think this is going to be a better game
than people are anticipating. Mayfield's a favorite. If we were
(19:21):
doing pick them, there's every reason to pick Mayfield. Now
I'm picking Graves because I will never not pick Graves
because they could play the Dallas Cowboys and I would say, hey,
Graves has got a shot, because that's just how I bleed.
But Mayfield is the favorite in this game, the expected winner.
I think it can be a good and close game,
maybe even surprise some people don't sleep on it. But
(19:43):
one of the best rivalries, underrated rivalries in the region.
A tell of two teams. Graves coming back with a
lot of talent but less experienced, Mayfield coming back with
talent and experience. We'll see should be a lot of
fun tonight over at war Memorial. So that's one of
the rivalries. The other rivalry getting played tonight is Tilman
and McCracken County Rumble on the River. Tillman with their
(20:05):
unbeaten streak fifteen in a row, that streak still alive
as they go into the brand new season. The defending
four A state champs McCracken County an improved team a
year ago, going six and six on the season under
coach Brooks, looking to improve on that this season and
a lot of people expecting them to a lot of
(20:26):
people favoring them and ranking them in the top ten
in Class six A football. So McCracken in a lot
of ways kind of back, which is good for this rivalry.
Last season a sixty forty one sixty of forty one
to sixteen final Tilman over McCracken a year ago. Tilman
(20:46):
has owned this series. They have been the dominant team
going back to twenty seventeen. Early in the series, this
thing favored McCracken. Tilman won the first meeting, in the second,
Tilman the third, and the McCracken won two in a row,
so McCracken had a three to two advantage. As of
twenty seventeen, it's been all Tilman since they have won one, two, three, four,
(21:12):
five in a row. They didn't play the COVID year,
so five straight for Paduca Tilman. The last time McCracken
County won a game in this series was twenty seventeen.
It's been all Tilman. In fact, the last three years
it's been all blowout Tilman. Twenty twenty two, fifty four
to fourteen, your final, twenty twenty three, forty two to seven,
(21:34):
your final, last season, forty one sixteen, your final. Now
the McCracken side, they return a lot of their guys.
They've got Landon Newman back who ended up leading them
in rushing. They've got Madix O'Neill back, their quarterback from
a year ago. They lost Cooper falcon I, their top receiver,
one of the best players in the region. But they've
got I mean, they've got talent again. You know, they've
(21:56):
got guys that were kind of underclass been last year,
very talented, that were just kind of waiting their turn.
In fact that they lost falcon I, they also lost
their second leading receiver in Dunbar, but they got Judelaneer back.
As a freshman, he caught four hundred and eighty yards
six touchdowns. Okay, so there's talent there. I think Brookshire's back, right,
(22:17):
let me check.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
I want to make sure. Yeah, Brookshire's back.
Speaker 3 (22:19):
So your third and fourth receivers are back, you're starting
quarterbacks back, your your top running back is back. And listen,
we don't talk a lot about the line on the show.
It's just a lot to get in the weeds on that.
We'll get into that as the season goes on. But
as far as skill guys go, they've got most of
their guys back, Paduca Tillman.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
They graduated some of those guys, right, I mean they did.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
You look at Jack James gone quarterback longtime quarterback.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
He's gone.
Speaker 3 (22:46):
Now you do have DeMarcus Wilson, their top running back
from a year ago is back. But then their receiver corps,
you know, Carter gone, Campbell gone. Those were two of
their better receivers from a year ago. Who's the other
one hitting, Yeah, he's gone. So a lot of the
skill guys are gone. Here's the thing, though, still extremely talented.
Still got a lot of guys kind of like what
(23:06):
I was saying with Graves County, gonna surprise you. A
lot of those underclassmen are gonna step up and improve.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
They've got talent too.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
And Tillman expected to be in contention once again for
a state title, expected to help to pretty much defend
their state title. But I think this has a chance
to be a good game tonight as well. This game
is at McCracken County. Tilman's still really good. Tilman still
got d one talent. McCracken's got a lot of their
skill guys back. McCracken is an improved team at six
(23:34):
and six a year ago and expected to be better
this season.
Speaker 2 (23:37):
I think this game will be better.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
I'm picking Tillman because the trend is Tilman has been
the better team in this series for the last five years,
so I don't think this is a year it shifts
back to McCracken. But anything can happen. I think McCracken
does have a fighter's chance in this ballgame. Still expect
tillman to win, but McCracken's got a fighter's chance. Okay,
(23:59):
gotta take a break. When we come back, we'll get
to the rest of the games and matchups tonight. Those
may be the two rivals. But Murray Apollo, that's got
a chance to be a good game. That's an intriguing game.
I'll explain why when we come back. This is Region
one Sports.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
What would you say you do here?
Speaker 1 (24:14):
Sports?
Speaker 3 (24:15):
Real sports, total coverage Basketball, football, baseball.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
We have one goal here he sports Fans the Region
one Sports Report on ninety nine to five The Fan.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Region on Sports.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
Moving along our final segment your Friday edition of the
show to in our own version of high school football.
Pick them Todd Graves at Mayfield. We've talked, Tillman at McCracken.
I'm picking grapes, but yes, Mayfield is the favorite. I'm
picking Tillman, but I think McCracken. It can, it can
show they are improved team this season. So that's two down.
Here's one that I think will be just as good,
(24:59):
just is interesting. Murray goes to Apollo. Murray a top
two three team, top five team for sure in Class
three A depending on the ranking, depending on who you
look at. Apollo has been considered a top ten team
in Class five A this season. Murray last year went
eight and four, Apollo went five and six. Now, Murray's
(25:22):
got their guys back, right, They got a lot of
guys back, A lot of anticipation and expectation placed on
this team for coach Cunningham, who I think is one
of the better coaches we've got in this region and
has done a fantastic job since he's been at Murray.
And they've got Wyatt Robins, who just gets it done.
As a quarterback. Last season, this kid two hundred completions
(25:42):
out of two hundred and ninety seven attempts, twenty four
touchdowns to nine interceptions, twenty six hundred and eighteen yards passing,
and led the team in rushing. Now they don't have
Jeremiah Jones, Okay, they don't have Isaiah Martin, Okay, they
got two other pretty good receivers back. And when you're
a small school and they are three eight still small,
and you've got a quarterback like that that can make
(26:04):
plays and get it done in multiple ways, you always
you're always gonna have a chance to win. Here's the deal, though, Apollo.
They've got a pretty good quarterback too. As a five
A football team, this is an Apollo team that year
after year keeps getting better. We see them every year
with Graves County. They keep improving, they keep getting better.
(26:25):
Coach Edge does a phenomenal job up there. The fighting
Anheuser bushes and if you know, you know, but they
do a great job. This is a team last year
again with five and six, very competitive, beat Marshall County,
handily beat Davies County, handily lost close to Madisonville, really
lost a pretty respectable game to Graves County. Lost twenty
(26:47):
eight six to Owensborough, which is actually a pretty good
score for them. Beat McCracken last season. I mean, this
is a good Apollo team. They've got a pretty good quarterback,
highly underrated. He's getting some D one looks, but he's
not got the big boys yet. I think he will.
Maxwell Johnson two thousand yard passer from a year ago,
(27:07):
third on the team in rushing. Not his strength that
this kid can make plays. It's not flashy, it's not
eye popping. I think he runs like a four six
forty maybe, so nothing just just jumps off the page.
But this is a kid that makes winning plays. And
this is gonna be a good game. Now, Murray's got
to go to Apollo. That is a tough way to
(27:29):
start your season. According to k just say, hey, this
is the first meeting between Murray and Apollo, at least
as long as they've been tracking these games. So this
is a very intriguing matchup tonight. I said on Wednesday,
I think you're gonna know all you need to know
if you're a five A football fan, if you follow
(27:49):
District one, you're gonna have a pretty good idea of
this district tonight because Apollo right now is like picked
fourth in the district and they're still top ten in
the state, and Murray's been project it as one of
the contenders in Class three A. So this is gonna
tell you a lot about these programs tonight. It's tough
to go on the road and travel to Owensboro to
(28:10):
play your first football game. But this is one of
the bigger meetings this season for Murray, this is one
of the bigger challenges. I think they'll be up to
the challenge. It's it's tough, man, because I think Apollo
is the favorite. But I like Murray.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
I do, and I.
Speaker 3 (28:25):
Think we're gonna I think we're gonna see them have
a really good season.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
I'm gonna pick the upset here.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
I'm gonna pick the Tigers to go on the road
and to beat Apolo, the Eagles of Apollo, the fighting
Anheuser Bushes. I think they go down at home tonight.
They're the favorite. Give me the underdog, give me Murray.
Let's see what they got. So I think this is
a really intriguing game. Gonna be keeping an eye on
this one. Marshall County, Critney County. Marshall County last season
(28:52):
three and seven, Critney County last season four and seven.
It's the same beat year after year for Marshall County.
You hear the same thing. Okay, this is a year
they're gonna get better. This is a year that they
make the step. This is the year, man, that good
things happen in seven on sevens. A lot of energy
in the locker room and then they come out and
(29:14):
it's kind of rinse and repeat with the same record
again the next season. They've been kind of a perennial
three win team. You hear it every off season, but
I've got to be honest with you, I've never bought
into it, and then year after year you hear it,
and then they end up being three and seven. I've
never bought into it until this season. I'm buying in
(29:39):
this season. I think they are improved. They got some
big old boys up on that line again in the trenches,
I think they'll be better. They've got a long time
starting quarterback in a senior this season and Jessic who
you know again. I think that helps. That can only help,
can't hurt. They've got some skill play like I kind
(30:00):
of like the Marshalls this season. Coach Bloodworth has done
a good job. The numbers in the program are up
as far as overall roster and things like that. Three
and seven last season. There was some hiccups, but there
are also some some surprises.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
I like the Marshalls.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Critney County, on the other hand, Cridney County is pretty traditional,
pretty good perennial football team again, a team last year
that just won one more game than Marshall County with
a four win season. But they've got a couple of
kids back that are playmakers. We talked about this small schools,
you just need one or two guys they make a
big difference, and they've got those guys this game at Marshall,
(30:43):
I I feel like Marshall might be the underdog. I'm
taking Marshall County. If you're going to improve, if you're
finally gonna get over the three win forget, let's let's
not focus on the first winning season and forever, let's
focus on we gotta we gotta walk before we we
can sprint.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
Here.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
You've been crawling for a while. You gotta walk now.
You gotta get over the three win hump. And if
you're gonna do that, you can't lose this one tonight.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
You can't.
Speaker 3 (31:11):
You've got three weeks here, You've got Kritny, Caldwell Trigg
out of the gate. They're gonna be good games, They're
gonna be competitive games, but they are games that if
you are truly stepping back towards where you were twenty
years ago and truly taking those steps like we hear
every offseason.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
You gotta win these games.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Because after that, I mean, you've I think Marshall, if
they win tonight, Marshall has a shot, has a shot
at a five win season.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
It's on the table.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
I don't know if they get to six wins in
the regular I don't think they get to six wins
in the regular season. They got a shot at five wins,
but they gotta win tonight. If not, then you're looking
at another three or four win season. But they got
a shot. I'm gonna go ahead and give it the Marshals.
I think do get the win tonight. I'm gonna pick them.
I'm picking you. Let's oh, I told you I haven't
bought in before. I bought in a little bit this
(32:02):
season this summer. It's turn it around, Marshall County. I'm
rooting for you like crazy I am.
Speaker 2 (32:08):
I am.
Speaker 3 (32:10):
It kills me when I tell people like well I
played at Marshall County and they give me the uhuh,
and I'm like, no, we were good. We were good.
So I'm rooting for you, Marshall. All right, here's another
one tonight. Calloway County, Webster County, Calloway County, oh and
ten a year ago, Webster County two and eight. Kind
of the same thing, right, Like, you know, two teams
(32:32):
that weren't great last season. Calloway County's got a new coach,
new energy, new vibe in that seat, in that locker room,
it's at home, and this is a season in front
of Calloway County where again anything but but no wins,
Like I mean, you win one game, you've made a
step forward. Do they get it tonight? I want to
(32:54):
say yes.
Speaker 2 (32:56):
They have?
Speaker 3 (32:57):
According to KHS, say, hey, they've never lost to Webster County.
They haven't played since twenty sixteen, but they've never lost
to Webster County. Just because I'm in a good mood,
I'm in a giving spirit. I just want to let's
just all be happy going into Week one. I'm gonna
pick Calloway County tonight. I'm gonna pick the Lakers. I
(33:18):
want them to win. Webster County is probably the favorite,
don't care. Let's go callaway two more. We've got Fulton
County and Gleason Tennessee. I don't know what Gleason's record
was a year ago. Don't know much about them again,
which is it's harder to keep up with those Tennessee
schools or anybody out of state, because Kentucky's got the
best website. What I do know is Fulton County last
(33:40):
season went one to nine. This game's at Fulton County.
The pilots, I've said it before, I've sing his praises.
I think Goes Bridges does a phenomenal job with what
he's given. Very small school, very small roster, and you
just deal with what you've got. Last season's team, that
(34:01):
one win team, they did have a handful of seniors,
and a handful of seniors at Fulton County is a
big loss for them. But again, I'm in a giving spirit.
I'm in a good mood. I want to see all
of our teams do well. So I'm gonna pick Fulton
County to win this game and last, but not least,
Ballard Memorial at hosting Todd County Central Ballard last season
(34:22):
four and seven, Todd County two and nine. I've been
towed by some people at Ballard. Don't sleep on the Bombers.
Speaker 2 (34:29):
This season.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Doesn't mean they're gonna go win a state title, but
they're gonna be better than people are giving them credit for.
Todd County last season, not a great football team.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Again two and nine.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Again, this game is at Ballard's A That's a tough
place to travel to, especially from Todd County. So I'm
gonna go with the Bombers on that one too. Give me,
Give me the home teams, give me the local teams.
I may be completely wrong. Good thing we're not doing.
Pick them. I may be in last place if we
were doing it. I don't care. Let's go Region one teams.
(35:02):
So for me in the recap, I am picking Graves
over Mayfield because duh I am. I'm I'm taking Tilman
over McCracken. Still think that'll be a better game than
it's been the last few years. I'm gonna pick Murray
to go on the road and beat to Polo. Although again,
that one, to me is flip the coin. That one,
(35:22):
to me is about a fifty to fifty game. I'm
gonna pick Marshall over Kritney County, even though again Critney
County is probably the favorite. I'm gonna root and pick
Callowe County to get a win to Night over Webster
County because I want to see them get a win.
But Webster County is the favorite. I'm taking Fulton County
over Glease into the Sea, although I probably probably Fulton's
(35:43):
the underdog, and then I'll take Baaller Memorial over Todd
County Central. Those are my pick'ms for tonight, even if
we're not doing official pick them on the Star, and
I'm sorry we're not. I can't apologize enough. By the way,
if you're in a game tonight and you want to
let me know what's going on, or you see something
happening worth shouting out, let me give me a text
two seven h five three four forty three oh eight.
(36:05):
Of course I'll be at Battle of the Birds, so
if you're there, I've got that covered. But anybody else
and everywhere else let us know. It'll help me with
the recap tonight. Look for that on West Kentucky Star
where we will recap each game in an article on
the Star that'll be up sometime tonight following Battle of
the Birds.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Five three four forty three oh eight. That text phone number.
All right, that's it for us. Hope you've enjoyed. We'll
talk on Monday see how we did. Until then, enjoy
the weekend. This has been Region one Sports
