Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian york
on ninety nine to five the fac.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
And away we go on a Wednesday. This is your Wednesday,
August twenty seventh edition of the Region one Sports Report.
I'm Brian Yorke and as always, you can get in
touch with the show at two seven oh five three
four forty three oh eight. That new text line again
is two seven oh five three four forty three oh eight.
You can also connect with us on Twitter or x

(00:38):
or whatever we call it now and uh Facebook, just
search Region one Sports. How are we doing on a Wednesday?
How are you doing? The weather is fantastic outside. It
actually feels like fall weather. In fact, we had a
record low overnight early this morning early this am, a
record low for this time of year at forty nine degree,

(01:00):
which broke, by the way, an eighty year old mark
of fifty two, which was set in nineteen forty five.
So the coldest day recorded in the Paducah Western Kentucky
area was fifty two until today it's forty nine. It
was a little you could fill the nip in the air.
It did feel a little chillier as I walked out
and came to work this morning. Now, I do want

(01:24):
to say we've got a great show lined up for
you today. We've got a fantastic interview lined up for
you to hear today with coach Tim Stark, the Callaway
County Lady Lakers soccer coach. They are off to an
historic start for Calloway County. You know, we talked about
them last week. They didn't just have an historic win
over Marshall County and it was and we'll talk about
that in our interview, but they're off to the best

(01:46):
start in school history as far as anybody knows, which
means they're off to the best start in school history.
So we'll hear from the coach about that, start, about
his team and about girls soccer in general. Here in
just a little bit, we'll talk about scores from Monday
and Tuesday in soccer and volleyball, and we'll talk football.
You know, we didn't get to catch up Monday, we

(02:07):
didn't get to play our normal Monday morning quarterback on Monday.
From week one scores, we'll do that and we'll talk
about the matchups coming up here in week two. So
that is on the docket here for today's show. I
do want to say a big thank you. I've had
several people reach out about Monday's show, and very appreciative

(02:27):
of your kind words and of your encouragement and of
all the conversation that Monday Show has kind of spurred
around the region. So very grateful for that, very very
kind of of you all who've reached out again, some
on our text line five three four forty three eight.
That number forty three eight, So some have reached out there,

(02:48):
some have reached out privately to my personal numbers, some
have reached out privately on Facebook and on X on Twitter,
and I always appreciate that. Not my favorite show, you know,
I got a lot of good feedback on it, but
not one that I wanted to do, not one that
I wanted to talk about, not where I wanted the
show to go. Because we just got through week one

(03:09):
of the football season. We should all be excited and
we should all be in this. High school football is
back and Raw raw fall sports, and here we go,
and we had that disrupted on Monday. So that's what
I want to do today, Raw Raw, Here we go,
high school sports. High school football is back. So we
in essence returned to our normal programming to what we

(03:31):
got robbed of on Monday. So that's that's the idea,
that's the plan, that's the goal here today. So let's
do it. Let's do what we do. Let's talk high
school sports. Let's go over scores and some things from
Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, just a few soccer games
taking place on Monday, and boys soccer, you had McCracken
County shutting out Mayfield eight to ZIERL. Girls soccer, you

(03:54):
didn't have anybody nobody in Region one played on Monday apparently,
so all right, a lighter on Monday. But boy soccer
eight nil McCracken over Mayfield. In volleyball, you had Ballad
Memorial over Saint Mary three sets to none, Calloway County
over Fulton County three sets to none, and Marshall County
over Carlisle County three to one. Those are scores on Monday.

(04:17):
On Tuesday, in boys soccer, the tow A Sectional tournament
got underway. Murray shut out trig County one nil, Callaway
County over Hopkins County Central three one. So those are
your two A Sectional tournament scores for boy soccer other
boys soccer. On Tuesday, Marshall County over Graves County eight

(04:38):
to two, McCracken County shutting out Paduca Tillman for nil.
Girls soccer the two A Sectional tournament, Callowai County stays
red hot, stays unbeaten as they beat Hopkins County Central
six to one. Murray also off to a terrific start.
They beat trig County six nil. So Callaway and Murray

(05:00):
both advancing in the two A with Callowei beating Hopkins
County Central, Murray Overtrigg County. Other girls soccer scores on Tuesday,
Marshall County shut out Graves County eight nil. In volleyball,
you had Ballard Memorial over Mayfield three to one, Graves
County over Carlisle County three to one, Marshall County over
CFS three sets to none, Murray over livings In Central

(05:23):
three two, and Paduka Tilman over CCA three one. So
those are all your scores from around the region on
Monday and Tuesday. Things that stood out, things that we
need to point out. Well, like I said, Calloway County
and we're gonna talk heavy on Calloway County girls soccer
at a moment, they stay unbeaten they're still, you know,
unblemished on the season. So is Murray. The Lady Tigers

(05:46):
are four and four and oh, I was gonna say
four and one, they're four oh and one because of
the tie, so kind of a blemish. Not really how
soccer works, but four wins, no losses, one tie, and
Lady Tigers they were expected to be down this year.
You know, they graduated, they had a lot of talent
kind of graduate through the program. But here they are

(06:07):
off to another fantastic start. Now they've got Marshall County
coming up next week. They've got Calloway County next week.
So the tests are coming for Murray, but they're unbeaten.
You look at Marshall County. Let's just stick with girls soccer.
You look at Marshall County, Marshall County four and one
where they lost to Calloway County, McCracken County. They're three

(06:29):
and two. But the caveat one of those losses to
Lexington Catholic who's pretty good, and the other one to
Chattanooga Christian out of Tennessee, who's also pretty good. And
you look at girls soccer and you know, we'll talk
with coach Stark about that later. The parody at the
top there are, of course, everybody chases Marshall, they're perennial.

(06:51):
Of course everybody chases McCracken. They're sort of perennial. But
it's got a lot of parody up there. There are
a lot of good, high level teams in this region,
and I think we've been seeing that on display early
this season on the boys side. And just speaking of
scores and things that stand out, Murray's boys are unbeaten.

(07:12):
They're five and oh with one tie so far this season.
Then you look around and you go to Marshall County,
who's four and oh. Then you look around and you
go to McCracken County, who is what three one and two,
a couple of ties, one loss, but three wins, and
just a lot of other really good soccer around the region,

(07:34):
a lot of other programs on the rise, a lot
so soccer in this region. Yeah, it's it's worth going
to it's worth going to check out. A lot of
good teams, a lot of good soccer being played, and
of course we're seeing that early here in the season.
So those are things that sort of quote unquote stood

(07:55):
out from the first two nights, and we're gonna deep
dive more into soccer next week. Next Wednesday, we're going
to kind of do a Region one reset with soccer,
really kind of dive in and make predictions and talk
about some of those top heavy teams and some of
the parody we're seeing and things like that. And of
course we're going to deep dive more later on with
Coach Stark's interview coming up here in a little bit.

(08:16):
But that's some things here early in the show, early
in the season worth pointing out. All Right, I'll tell
you what. Let's take a break. I need a moment.
I need to refuel with the coffee. We'll come back.
We'll talk football Week one scores and stats, Week two matchups.
Full fledged football season is here. It feels like it.
We'll talk about it. We come back. It's Region one.

Talking your teams. This is the Region one Sports Report,
Reason one.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Sports Moving along here on your Wednesday edition of the show,
Getting Ready to talk to some high school football. Week
one scores in Stats Week two matchups. We'll get into
all of that here in a moment. One thing, as
we get into our brand new season of Region one Sports,
I've been working behind the scenes, if you will, to
kind of freshen up some of the bumpers, some of

(11:17):
the the what we call liners, that's the things you
hear before the music bed plays that brings us back
into the show. So like when you hear the big
voice guys say Region one Sports, you know, and then
there's some tag or some some other thing that goes
with it. So I've been working to kind of freshen
those up a little bit, just add a few new
ones into the rotation. And I'm not gonna spoil any

(11:40):
of them because i like what I'm working on so far.
But if you're a fan of the office, if you're
a Ghostbusters fan of pop culture fan, I think you're
gonna enjoy some of the new ones as we get
those done and get those in rotation. But part of
working on that to kind of freshen those things up.
The other thing I've been working on has been to

(12:00):
better promote the show. You know, We've got the new
text line again, that number five three four forty three,
oh eight. We've got a new way for you to communicate.
And by the way, several of you are and again
I really appreciate that the feedback, the information, whatever you
want to provide, it's anonymous, so knock yourself out. And

(12:22):
I've been been enjoying that text line. But we've got
that new tool at our disposal. I've got a new
way that I can record interviews. Now when you hear
from Coach Stark coming up in a little bit, it's
I sound like I'm in a ten can because I
recorded via speakerphone instead of actually putting in my AirPods,
which would have sounded way better. My bad, but you know,

(12:45):
new technology. We're working the King South. And then the
other thing I've been trying to do is work on
better promoting the show, getting word out there, getting better
word out there, really really sprucing up our self promotion efforts.
That's the one thing of all things I'm the worst at.
When you work in media, when you were especially in broadcasting,

(13:07):
it's kind of like being a politician. You've got to
be a little narcissistic, you've got to be a little
bit self conceited a little bit, and want to talk
about yourself or want to talk about your work. I'm not.
I'm not one that likes to promote what I'm doing.
I'm not one that likes to promote myself. Believe it
or not, I'm just not. It is the nature of

(13:29):
the business that you do that. And so, as I
was kind of working on some things yesterday, I was
on Google and I saw the little tab where it
says you can switch to AI mode. I thought, let's
try it out. And I switched to AI mode and
I ask it, you know, what is the Region one
Sports Report? What kind of description will it give me

(13:50):
that might help me feel more comfortable in self promotion?
And by the way, it gave a phenomenal description, better
than anything I could have written, which isn't saying much.
So that was cool. But then right below it was
a suggestion and it said who is Brian York with
the Region one Sports Report? And I thought, okay, I'm

(14:11):
a little scared to click on this, but my curiosity
got the best of me, so I clicked on it.
And I'm not gonna lie what it spit out. What
it gave back freaked me out a little bit, it did.
It freaked me out a little bit, AI is, uh
is something So I just want to read this because
it blew my mind first of all, And I know,

(14:34):
I know it's basically just searching the internet and anything
that was ever said. It's kind of putting it together
and putting it together in a way that hopefully makes sense.
But the speed in which it spits this out, with
the accuracy in which it spits it out is insane.
So the question was, who is Brian Yorke, the host
of Region one Sports Again? Yeah, and it said Brian Yorke.

(15:00):
He is a veteran sports radio host, program director, and
co creator of the Regional one Sports Report. And here's
the line that got me. He is a prominent voice
in Western Kentucky high school sports, having been active in
the region's broadcasting scene for several years. That's really sweet
of AI. But I don't know if I would call
myself a prominent voice now. Maybe. I mean, look, maybe

(15:22):
that's something I've got to you know, I've always said
there's weight to doing what we do, like we've got
to know that our words have weight. So that kind
of hit me that AI said that prominent voice funny
but also kind of hit me. And then it says
key details about Brian Yorke media roles. In addition to
hosting Region one Sports, York is also the program director
for ninety nine to five of the Fan and serves

(15:44):
as radio voice for the Graves County Eagles on Willie
one O two point one. Again a little freaky background.
He is a Kentucky native originally from Benton, who studied
at Murray State University and attended Marshall County High School. Yes, family,
York is a family man with a wife and two children. Yes.

(16:04):
Past experience. Before his current roles, York served as a
radio voice for the Paduka Chiefs Baseball club. Yes he did, Yes,
he did, then, it says. As co creator of the
Region on Sports Report in twenty eighteen, York has been
the has seen the show grow into a highly respected
program that covers high school athletics in Kentucky's first region.

(16:26):
Listen that has to be written somewhere. AI wouldn't get it,
So whoever put that out there, thank you. Highly respected
and it also got that. We started the show in
twenty eighteen, which is crazy, it says. In March twenty
twenty five, the podcast was ranked eleventh on Million podcast
Lists of Top one hundred high school athletes podcast in
the nation. All true. Yeah, yeah, it listened. All that

(16:49):
freaked me out. The fact that it said all of
those things, what it had to say, the way it
organized it, my background, I mean, like freak me out.
But there you go. That was very sweet. That was
very sweet of AI to say that and have all
of that. All right, So let's do more of that.

(17:10):
Let's put more things out there for AI to know
about us and together on us. Let's talk high school sports.
Let's talk football in the first region. We had week
one last week, we just didn't get to talk about it,
but today we do. So let's do that. You know,
scores from Friday, you know the scores by now, but
some of the breakdown, some of the takeaways. Paduka Tilman

(17:32):
beat mccranken County sixty three to twenty eight. Now I'm
just kinda kind of do this randomly as I clicked
through stats, click through scores, but sixty three to twenty eight,
and a lot of the curiosity going into the season
would be like we knew Tillman would be a little
step back a little I mean, it's kind of hard
not to with all the dudes they graduated last year,
all the talent they had, still got a lot of dudes,

(17:53):
still got a lot of talent. Just kind of where
are they? So that was one of the questions we
had last week also McCracken County. You know, we think
they'll be better. We believe they'll be better. A lot
of people think they'll be better than even last season,
and last season they were six and six. They really
came on strong and really kind of jumped back to
uh into fold, into the fold a little bit. Sixty

(18:16):
three to twenty eight. This was a ballgame most of
the game. Tilman had a I'm not gonna say, yeah,
probably comfortable lead. Not probably never felt like the game
was really in doubt. But it was at least a
ballgame for a little bit. But sixty three twenty eight
ends up being your final. Tilman ends up flexing on offense.
It's still high powered. Stone Crow a senior twenty five

(18:40):
of thirty nine, seven touchdown passes, four hundred and thirty
two yards and two interceptions. Yeah, that's that's pretty good.
That that's pretty good. Avery Thompson had five catches for
one twenty two and two touchdowns. That's pretty good too.

(19:00):
Five catches, two are in the end zone. You go
one twenty two on just five catches. It's pretty good stuff.
And Tilman ran the football two hundred and five yards
one touchdown. I mean they just offensively again. Wow. And
they play my Eagles this week. Wow. On the McCracken
County side of things again, they ended up scoring twenty

(19:21):
eight points. We all know Maddox O'Neill a long time
starter and top quarterback in the region. He goes nineteen
of thirty two picks, two touchdowns, one eight two. Tilman
did a really good job run defense. McCracken County thirty
two carries eighty one yards two touchdowns total in that game.
So that's a little snippet. That's a little bit about

(19:42):
Tillman and McCracken on Friday. How about this though, other
questions we had Marshall County. You know, I kept saying
and I'll keep saying it, if Marshall County is gonna
get over the three win the three win hump, they
we have to win three wins to start the season.

(20:03):
You have opportunity, Critney County, Cabwoll County, Trigg County, all
of those provide an opportunity, provide a path if you're
gonna get to the fourth win to maybe a fifth
win on the season, which hasn't been done in quite
a while. By the way, I like what twenty fifteen
I think was the last time they even won five games.
I think I may be wrong. I'll correct it if

(20:24):
I am later on. But so it's like a perennial
three win team with an occasional fourth win. If you're
gonna get at least, you know, try to get to
that fourth win and push for five again. You gotta win.
These first three weeks, they had an opportunity with Critney County.
Critney County is good, not great with Criton County. Again,
put it in perspective a two to a football team.

(20:46):
This game is at Marshall County. You gotta go get
the win, and Marshall County does forty two to twenty nine.
The Marshall's in this ballgame. Talk about again. Senior quarterbacks.
Top guys in the region Lynn Jazik twelve of nineteen,
two touchdowns, one pick, one, forty six in the air.
Marshall Kenny ran the football as a team thirty five times,

(21:08):
won eighty one four touchdowns. On the ground. You had
a sophomore and Colton wins it go twelve carries eighty
five to one touchdown case and Holland, a senior goes
sixteen carries sixty six yards two touchdowns. But the overall
point being Marshall County looked good on Friday night. They

(21:28):
look good. They took on a very talented small school
but always a good program in Criton County and they
won fairly convincing. Again, I don't following that score on Friday.
It never felt like that game was necessarily, you know,
in trouble for Marshall. It was a good ball game.
It was close most of the game, but they felt

(21:50):
to be in control most of that game. And that's
what you want to see. They get Caldwell County Friday night.
Cardwall County is much improved. We knew they would be
at point. They've been really down the last few years.
They've kind of gotten a little better each season. They
beat Hopkins County Central thirty one to twenty fairly convincingly
Friday night. This is gonna be a pretty good ball game.

(22:13):
It's at Caldwell County. That's not an easy place to
play either. It's a very fun, very cool setting over
at over at Caldwell County. But again Marshall County is
gonna get to that fourth win. They got to get
this one. They should get this one and if they do,
then you line up with Trigg County next week, who
again has been a little up and down over the years.

(22:34):
But another winnable game. So Marshall County off to a
good start the start they needed. How about this one?
And not necessarily surprised they won, but they won this
big Callaway County sixty two nothing over Webster County in
Week one. Webster County is not great. You know, Webster

(22:57):
County a year ago they were two win football team.
They they were decently competitive in a few games, but
they lost sixty four to forty four to Ballard. They
lost forty six to eighteen to Critney County. Like you know,
they also had some some ugly some blimishes on that
record last season as well. But Callowi County was winless

(23:18):
a year ago. Callowai County was man. They couldn't stop
people from scoring and then their side of the scoreboard.
I you know a lot of people wondered if it
was even just broke because it just wouldn't move. It
moved on Friday night. That the home side of the
scoreboard works really well. Sixty two to nothing in this ballgame.

(23:39):
In this ballgame, Matthew Breidwell, a junior, eleven to fourteen,
three touchdowns, one pick, two point fifty four in the
year Logan Smith, the senior, this is insane. By the way,
he ran the football seven times. He totaled one hundred
and forty four yards in a touchdown. You're gonna put
that in perspective. That kid so far this season is

(24:01):
averaging twenty yards of carry. I mean twenty yards of carry. Wow,
that's insane. Receiving darkas four catches one thirteen, he had
two touchdowns. Calloway County look good. They look good against
a bad team. But you know what, Calloway County was
a bad team last year. So that's a good sign

(24:23):
for the Lakers. Now they get Murray High this week,
that's gonna be tough. But you know what Calloway County did.
Now they've set the bar. Now you look at their
schedule and you say, all right, you didn't just beat
Webster County, you demolish Webster County. So we know Webster
County is bad. But you you know what have I
said before in the show, and I say it all

(24:44):
the time? Good teams beat bad teams badly. Good teams
beat bad teams badly, and they beat a bad team badly.
So does that tell me Callaway is a good team?
I want to say. So. I'm not gonna judge you
too much by the Murray this week. I will. If
you hang tight, you're expected to lose. If you hang

(25:05):
tight and you make it a ballgame, I'll judge you.
But then you've got Fulton County and Ballad Memorial after that.
Now you've got games that went from I don't know,
I don't think so to uh oh, Callaway County. Could
we be looking at three and one after four weeks? Now,
let's don't put the cart in front of the horse.
But Week one definitely spurred that kind of excitement, and

(25:27):
that kind of flipped in the script of what we
thought about the Lakers and then again speaking of their
opponent this week, Murray High. How about Murray High. They
go on the road to a very good Apollo team,
a top ten five, a football team, a football team
that's expected to put up points of football teams that
is expected to be good this season, and they go

(25:49):
on the road to Owensborough two hour drive for week one.
Not easy. They travel up and they travel back with
a win forty eight to thirty four of the final.
They didn't just win, they they won convincingly. Whyatt Robbins again,
senior quarterbacks, top players in the region, twelve of twenty one,
four touchdowns, no picks, two thirty two in the year.

(26:13):
As a team, they carried the football twenty nine times
for two fifty eight and two touchdowns and Murray high
looking you know where Callaway maybe looked better than expected.
Marshall may have looked better than expected. Murray looking a
little like expected, if not a little better. With that win. Mean,

(26:33):
that was a fifty to fifty game to start the year,
and they they dropped nearly fifty points at Apollo. So
there you go. Other scores and other things to kind
of look at from last week Ballard Memorial. There was
some interest in Ballor. They had a pretty good season
last season. They took on Todd County Central, not a

(26:54):
great team, but a good team. They lost thirty two
to twenty eight. Not bad. That tells me Ballard is
going to be competitive this season, and we'll see how
things go from here as they take on Joe Burns
Cedar Hill, Tennessee. And in Fulton County they lost close
forty two thirty eight to Gleaes in Tennessee. I believe
they lost close to them last year. Yeah, thirty four

(27:14):
to twenty eight. So does that tell me Fulton County's
in the same boat as last season? Does that tell me?
I don't know yet. They take on South Fulton this week.
We'll see. But that's a look at football from last week.
There's a little bit of a look at the matchups
this week, and of course, as always on Friday, will
break them down, preview them and predict them as we

(27:35):
get into Friday show. All right, gonna take a break.
When we come back. Our guest callaway County Lady Laker
soccer coach Tim Stark joining me on the phone. We'll
talk to him when we come back. It's Region one.

Speaker 1 (27:49):
You were listening to the Region one Sports Report on
ninety nine to five the fan.

Speaker 6 (28:05):
Right back here on the Region one Sports Report as
we talk a little soccer on this episode, and we've
got coach Tim Stark with the Callaway County Lady Lakers
and coach, first of all, out to a fantastic start
this fall. Explain to us what's been going on with
your team so far. Well, you know, thank you first
off for having me on the show. It's always a

(28:25):
pleasure to get on a Region one sports report and
talk Lady Lakers soccer and just talk soccer in general.
So thank you for spending some time with us and
and letting us display our team and and and soccer
here in Region one. But uh, you know, we we
have had a great preseason. You know, this this year
has started off best we can tell.

Speaker 7 (28:46):
We've done some research. This is the best start to
Lady Lakers soccer in program history at a five and
oh start, and so doing some very special things. This
is a special team and and we we've been blessed
so far this season to to have a great season
so far.

Speaker 6 (29:00):
Yeah, when we talked last year, you know you had
a very talented team, but kind of felt like last
year was the start of what could be a really
special group this year, like last year was kind of
laying the groundwork for that. And here you are at
five and zero. Let's talk about the Marshall County game
last week. Not often that Calloway is able to get
a win over Marshall, But you got to win at Marshall.

(29:22):
Talk about that environment and kind of what that not
was like for your team.

Speaker 7 (29:26):
Well, you know, you say not often. I didn't realize
our overall record at the program was as lopsided as
it was till I listened to the Marshall County broadcast
and read the paper that following Friday five and seventy
six is nothing to brag about, but we will take
the victory on Thursday night. You know, our girls went

(29:46):
into that game and I don't think in my four
years of coaching high school soccer that I've seen a
team come into warm ups as focused as they were.
We changed formation on the bus ride to Marshall County
that day to kind of solidify what we wanted to
do defensively, and so we changed formations and went into
that game knowing that we were going to play defense

(30:07):
for probably seventy five of the eighty minutes that night,
and the eighteen girls on our varsity team bought into that.
They knew that they were going to be under fire
a lot that night and they just bought into the
to the motto of hey, let's let's make sure that
when we have our opportunity, we capitalize. And so in
the first half, you know, I could hear our parents

(30:29):
kind of getting anxious, and at one point I are
one of our parents yell, hey, we've got to get
on the offensive end of the field. And I was like, someone,
go over and tell them that's not the game plan, Like,
tell them that's not our game plan to night. And
so we kind of we just held serve there in
the first half, and it was a good defensive battle,
and you know, Marshall is Marshall, and you know their
their slogan of tradition never graduates holds true every single year.

(30:51):
And so when the second half rolled around and I
told the girls at halftime, you know, we're gonna get
a scoring opportunity or two here in the second half.
And even in the first half we had a couple
of chances and just didn't go our way. But you
know when we had we had a free kick just
right outside the box and Jayden Start placed the ball
and Savannah Dodd, one of the best keepers not only
in our region but in the state, made a great

(31:12):
save on that shot, and it just deflected off the
top of the goal post and came right down to
Amrie's feet and she put it in the back of
the net. And I looked over at the coaching staff
and of course we were excited, but I said, men,
this is going to be the longest twenty six minutes
of our lives. And so you know, we we held
on there at the end of the game and we're
able to win one. Oh and what an atmosphere. You know,

(31:33):
it's something those girls have been working for. You know,
we've had great teams and great great seniors the past
three years, and every every after every game, like Marshall
or Murray or McCracken, when we would get close, I
kept telling them, we're close. We've just got to find
a way to get over the edge. And finally Thursday night,
we found a way to get over the edge. And

(31:53):
of course, you know, winning at Cobraan Stadium against the
Lady Marshalls is one of those things that hopefully can
can continue to propel our season into something special.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
You know, you mentioned that, and we talk all the
time about like high school sports or those are memories
those players will have forever. You know, you always have
the games you talk about, the moments you talk about,
and it's early in your season, but to kind of
have one of those moments that you know, those girls
will will talk about for the rest of their lives
is kind of a special thing.

Speaker 7 (32:21):
Oh absolutely, you know, And and that's we spend some
time in the postgame talking about that, talking about how
you know, this is one of those memories that we
want to make sure that we take in and put
into our you know, to our memory banks and put
it in and make sure that we remember this game
from now on. But it can't be the point of
the season where we look back and go, well, we
beat Marshall. Check. Let's make sure that we continue to

(32:44):
propel our season forward and treat every game like that
so that we can, you know, continue the season that
we hope we can have.

Speaker 6 (32:52):
Yeah, that's what I was going to say, is you know,
it happens early in the season. It can be kind
of a blessing or a curse. But you know, if
if the players treat us the right way, it's, as
you said, the springboard to what could be for the
rest of the season.

Speaker 7 (33:04):
Well, and I think it kind of instilled some confidence
in us. You know, like I said, the past couple
of years, we've been close, but we've never got that
signature win. And so this is one of those wins
that we can look back on and say, hey, we
finally got that win that we've been looking for. And
you know, especially if you can and remember back to

(33:25):
last season when we went to Colburn on senior night
at Marshall last year and got beat seven to nothing
and thought, what are we doing wrong? Because we had
played well up until that point that season and just
ran into a buzz saw that night. And so we
looked back on that and say, you know, what are
we doing wrong? What do we need to Are we
doing something wrong in the pregame or were doing something
wrong in our preparation And so finally getting that win

(33:46):
over a program like Marshall County. Of course, Coach Moon
and I are pretty good friends, have been for instance college,
and so I know the tradition there, I know the
team they have. I know that you know, they're just
an overall signature program in this region and even in
the state, and so anytime you can go there and
even play close with them or squeak out a win,
you're doing something special. So we were able to squeak

(34:09):
out that win Thursday night, and we'll continue to move
forward from there.

Speaker 6 (34:12):
Well, let's talk about the landscape of the region as
a whole, because I mean, you Mentioneding Marshall, they're the
you know, a perennial power. McCracken has been has been
that the last several years. Murray's out to a good start.
You guys are out to an unbeaten start so far.
Like this region when it comes to girls soccer, there's
there's some good parody at the top. It feels like
there's a lot of teams right now that have a fight,

(34:32):
a fighter's chance as you get into the season.

Speaker 7 (34:35):
Oh absolutely, you know this this region is you know,
and even when you put us up to the other
teams in the state, you know this region is looked
at right now. You know, the coach's poll with sin
out over the weekend and Murray, McCracken, Marshall, and Calloway
were all and the coaches pole all ranked in the
top twenty five. And so you know that just speaks

(34:55):
to what the other coaches in this state think about
this region, in this area. And also it speaks to
you know, what region won soccer, and not only Region
one soccer, but the travel clubs in this area. You know,
we're producing some great young athletes and some great young
ladies that are playing soccer at a high level. And
so that's something that probably wasn't siven years ago. You know,
Marshall's always been a powerhouse in this area. Murray has

(35:18):
been up and down. You know, they have good years,
you know, even Graves. You know, Graves had a few
years there where they were kind of running the region.
And so, you know, this area has produced good teams,
but not always good. Parody is amongst the teams in
this area. So this is one of those years where
you look at the region and you look at the teams,
you know on the girls side, and you say, man,
there's four teams in this region that could compete with

(35:39):
any team in the state. And so that's what we're
trying to build here. Not only have Calaway, but in
this region are teams that are gonna draw notice and
draw the eye of other teams from the state. And
you know, we're blessed that we can get some of
those teams to come over here and play us. But
you know, most of the time we're traveling to go
play teams of that upper Cali caliber and that Golden
Triangle up there in Louisville Lexington, and so you know,

(36:02):
we got a taste of that at Bluegrass Games. I
know all four of those teams, Marshall, McCracken, Murray, and
Calloway all went to the Bluegrass Games this season, which
is you know, preseason scrimmages, but you know they're full
games and you know everyone's getting ready for season, so
you're playing at that high level. And all four teams
in this area represented very well in those Bluegrass Games,
and so you know that's that's as a program at Callaway,

(36:23):
that's what we're trying to build tour is you know
that statewide where we can go and compete outside this
region to not you know, just go and play games,
but compete to win. And so you look at this
region and of course, you know, you know, I think
I would be you know, I wouldn't be accurate if
I didn't say I think the region still runs through
Marshall and McCracken. Until someone beats those two teams, you

(36:44):
know they've they've won the region the past couple of
years and you know, even you know, throw Thursday night
out the window when it comes to the regional you
know tournament. But you know, we're we're gonna hopefully be
able to compete in that. But I think the region
runs through Marshall and McCracken. Of course, you know, coach
Man got over at Murray still got you know, a
really good team. They graduated a lot last year, and
so they're still figuring some things out, but they're three

(37:06):
zero and one, I think, and so you look at
the games that they've played and you know that you
know they're going to continue to build one of the
best or three of the best players in the state
in Bria and Kendall. You know, so they've they've got
a lot of talent over there, and of course McCracken
is and McCracken you've got so much so many girls
that chose from over there, and of course Maddie Ledgerwood,
KK Tymes some of the best players in this region

(37:26):
as well. So, uh, you know, and and of course Marshall.
You know, it starts with their with their all state
goalkeeper and then you just build forward from there.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (37:35):
So you know, this this region has a lot of
good teams, and of course, you know, I look at
a team that that's really starting to grow right now,
like a Paduka Tillman. You know, they're young. You know,
they're not winning a lot of games yet, but they're
gaining a lot of experience. They're very young. A lot
of those girls that are young are playing club ball,
so they're only going to get better, you know. And
even Mayfield and Graves, you know, you look at those

(37:55):
two teams and they're they're both super young. We played
Graves last night in the JB game and I'll look
down there and I looked at Chile and I was like,
don't most of those girls start for your varsity team too?
And he's like, yeah, but they're all freshmen and sophomores.
We're just trying to get them experienced.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (38:08):
I was like, yeah, no, I get it. So, you know,
they're young and learning and growing, and so this region
is going to continue to be good for years to come.

Speaker 6 (38:16):
You know that old saying, you know, a rising title
will raise all ships. You know, Marshall had kind of
been that program everybody was chasing. It kind of forces
everybody to get reach a certain level if they want
to compete, like what you just said, Now that there's
four or five teams that are playing at a highly
state recognized.

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Level, those teams underneath it. It might not show as
much this year, but it's forcing those teams to really
step up their efforts to get there, and it just
benefits soccer in this region really, I think for years
to come.

Speaker 7 (38:44):
You know, And I think you're absolutely right, and you know,
I would encourage I know, you know, as a girl
coach and as a girl dad and all the things
that goes with being that there's not a lot of
fans that come out to watch the ladies games yet,
and I would encourage you if you if if you
haven't made it out to a girl's soccer game, just
go watch one, you know. I know usually everyone comes

(39:05):
through the last ten or fifteen minutes so that they
can get there for the boys games, which you know,
I just wish, I wish that that would be more
on the forefront of people's minds, is to come support
the girls, come out there, see them play, and once
you come to a game, I think you'll be hooked.
You know, there's high level soccer being played in the
leaking on the girls sides, So come out support those
young ladies and be a part of that as well.

Speaker 2 (39:28):
I was telling somebody the other day, I said, to me,
the biggest not biggest difference, but to me, the biggest
benefit of.

Speaker 6 (39:33):
Watching girls soccers. You see how intelligent they are at
playing the game. Uh.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
You see the maneuvering, you see the you see the
players and like they just play at a at a
at a certain skill level with their with their minds
as much as anything.

Speaker 7 (39:47):
Oh absolutely, you know the the the speed of the
girl's game. Obviously it can be as fast, but not
as fast as the boys games, say time, So you
can really see what you're talking about as far as
the thought process and the making the moves in the
midfield to the wing that's the midfield, and you can
see the teams that really work on that and you can,
like I said, there is some high, high level soccer

(40:09):
being played in this region, in this end of the state.
So I encourage just come out and check out a game,
and I promise she'll be hooked.

Speaker 6 (40:17):
So tell me about your roster this season. Let's let's
kind of let you take a moment to kind of
brag on your girls and the team that you have
and the work they put in.

Speaker 7 (40:26):
So you know, our roster starts at the top. And
when we were in pre season and in uh, you know,
in June and July and we were doing our two
days and I kept looking at the girls and I
kept telling them, you know, this is gonna be the
team for this year, but also this is gonna be
the team for next year.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
You know.

Speaker 7 (40:43):
We we only have one senior and our roster and a
Lena Bernall, and she's a great young lady, really really
the true epitome of having to wait your turn. She's
one of our wingers, and we've been blessed in years
past with a lot of wings that could play, and
so throughout her high school career, fresh and sophomore and
even some junior, you know, she played a lot of
jv and didn't get a lot of varsity minutes. But

(41:04):
she stepped into a starting role for us this year
as our left wing and really doing some phenomenal good things.
Put in the time in the offseason to get better,
started playing some club ball so that she could get
more touches, and it really really has shown off. We
have a big junior class this year and that junior
class is you know, the returning bulk of our scoring

(41:24):
from last season. You know, from last season's team, we
returned ninety five percent of all goals scored, we returned
about eighty percent of all of our assists, and so
you know that's that's speaking highly of what's coming back
to our program, not only this year, but next year.
And so you know, you start with our midfield, which
is manned by Finley Linky, who's a junior. And then

(41:45):
we've got two sophomores in the midfield as well, Jaden
Stark and Mary Algupten, and the work they've put in
in the off season to really get that off the
ball movement, to get that where they can, you know,
kind of read each other. And the great thing about
these girls is most of them play club ball together
and so they've been playing club ball together since third grade,
and so they really know each other. They understand each other,

(42:06):
they know their weaknesses, they know their strengths, they know
where they're going to be on the next pass, and
so far it's really paid off for us this season.
So those three in the midfield are creating a lot
of opportunities and really pushing the ball down the field.
Our wings. Like I said, our left wing is Alena Bernad.
Then we go over to the right side, which is
Rayley McCluer, who was injury riddled last season. You know

(42:26):
about that. I think it was the fifth game of
the season she broke her arm when we were playing
and so she had to sit out most of the season.
So she's come back with a fire this season. She's
our leading goal scorer so far, I think, with seven
this year, and so you know, she's really doing a
lot of great things on that right wing. Our striker
position is manned by a couple of different people, but
right now the starter's Carlin Provine. She's a junior as well,

(42:47):
just a great distributor. She can do a lot of
things with the ball at her feet, and also she's
kind of got that bulldozer mentality where you know, she
likes to run through people, she likes to challenge for balls,
and so we need that as well. You know, our
back line, our defense again, probably our strongest part of
our team as far as that goes, and it all
starts with our I call her Mighty Mouse Avan Basil.

(43:10):
She's a junior, two time second team All Region player,
and really really making some big strides this season. When
you look at her, you would think there's no way
she's a center back because she's all of about four
foot eight if she's even that tall. But just the
motor that won't stop, an ability to really read the field,
a leader on the field by her actions and her words,

(43:30):
and so everything with our defense starts with her, and
then we surround her on the back line with a
freshman whose name is Aubrey Morton. She's really stepped into
a big role for us this season. She'll mirror Aban
as far as hYP goes, but I promise you won't
find two stronger mentally and physically players than those two
when it comes to wanting to win the ball and

(43:52):
really being able to track down. A girl that I've
been really proud and a little bit surprised in this
season is Addison Jennings. Addison's taken on him. She played
striker for US most of the season last year, but
this season we needed another right back defensively, and she said, coach,
let me try it. And so we've been playing her
back there and just playing phenomenals, you know, learning a

(44:14):
new role, and it gives us a little bit of
a new look as well, being able to release one
of our wingers, our wing backs back into the attack
when she wins the ball, which is something we haven't
had the past few years. So that creates some more
opportunities for us. And then of course we've got another
defender back, Sarah Dole. This is her first year, another
one of those players that's been waiting patiently to get
her shot on the field. So she's our left back

(44:35):
and doing some great things. But the surprise of the
season so far has been our new goalie.

Speaker 4 (44:40):
You know.

Speaker 7 (44:40):
We graduated Grace Barnes last year, a three year starter,
someone that really commanded the go box and did a
lot of great things for us. Set a school record
last year with ten shutouts Grace did, and so we
were kind of scratching our heads thinking to what are
we going to do? You know, Gaby Jokum is our
starting goalie who started playing soccer last year. A week

(45:01):
into the season, she came to me and just said, hey,
I'm looking for a new sport. Do you think you
have any room? And I kind of said, well, yeah,
I whant to. We'll try you out on JV. We're
looking for a backup goalie for JV, and throughout the
season last year she progressed from back up to start
her on JV, and then this season we've kind of
thrown her to the wolfs and she's been learning at

(45:22):
a rapid speed. But I think if you wrap the
Marshall game the other night, that you saw what she
can be when she's at her peak level. She had
about twenty saves the other night at Marshall, fifteen to
twel I can't remember the exact number, but this made
some you know, all state level saves and you can
kind of see Marshall scratching their heads saying who is
this girl and where does she come from? So you know,
and of course our bench is gonna be great as well.

(45:44):
We've got another freshman and a Marie Arnette, who you
will not only be hearing about on the soccer field,
but you'll be hearing about her when it comes to
track season. She's one of the, if not the fastest
girls in the state. If you haven't, if you haven't
heard about her yet, you'll be hearing her name. So
we've had a little speed and she's not only speed,
but she's got some good ball control as well and
then we can go. We've got some other talented freshmen

(46:05):
on our bench as well, Leila Barrow, Aubrey Kine, a
couple more juniors, Kelsey Stewarts. We lost one girl to
an a shale tear on the first game of the season,
so at least Patton was going to be a big
part of our team this year, but she'll be back
for next season. So you know, we're not as deep
as a team as we were last year, which has
caused us to really ramp up our conditioning and making

(46:25):
sure we're taking our care of ourselves before and after
each game. But you know, we feel good about where
we're at right now.

Speaker 2 (46:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (46:33):
Well, it always is fun getting to talk to you
and learn a little bit about your team in the region.
I appreciate you doing this and can't wish you but
nothing but the best.

Speaker 2 (46:40):
The rest of the season.

Speaker 7 (46:42):
Well, thank you very much. We kick off the two
A play tonight, so hopefully tomorrow you're talking about I
know this would be hopefully aired sometime. Hopefully you're talking
about us winning a game and not losing a game.
So but again, appreciate all this everything, Appreciate all the
coverage you give to soccer in this area, and not
only soccer, but sports in this area.

Speaker 2 (47:00):
Again, that's coach Tim Stark our conversation from yesterday as
we talked Callowi County Soccer. My apologies for the audio quality.
It will improve in the future. We are using new
technology and I was on my phone. I did not
think about my end of the conversation being on speaker
phone making it sound that way. But in the future
I will be on AirPods and that way it'll sound

(47:22):
much better, at least on my end, and it'll always
sound like a phone call on the other end, no
matter what we do, if it's a phone interview. But
we've got more interviews lined up. We're lining up more
interviews as we speak. If you are a coach in
this region soccer, volleyball, football, and you want to come
on the show, raise your hand to text me, message me,

(47:43):
reach out to me. We'll make it work. We'll set
it up, we'll make it happen, just like we did
yesterday with Coach Stark. As for that, that's the end
of the show. Thanks for listening. I've enjoyed it. I
hope you've enjoyed it. Back on Friday with more. Until then,
this has been Region one Sports
