Speaker 1 (00:06):
This is the Region one Sports Report with Brian York
on ninety nine to five the Fan.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
And away we go on your Wednesday. It is a Wednesday,
September tenth edition the Region one Sports Report. I'm Brian
York and as always, you can get in touch with
us on the show via social media at Twitter on
Region one Sports, on Facebook at Region one Sports Report,
and of course via the text line at two seven
h five three four forty three eight. How are we

(00:39):
doing on a Wednesday? You've made it halfway through the
work week. We are halfway to a week four of
football Friday here in the state of Kentucky, which is insane.
Week four we are a third of the way through
the season, nearly at the halfway point. That is crazy,
absolute madness. But here we are, which means we're also

(01:02):
at the halfway point, or actually just beyond the halfway
point for you know, soccer, We're we're at the halfway
point or nearly beyond the halfway point for volleyball. Like
it's it's all here, and not only here, but all
almost over. That's crazy. It's crazy. We just got started.
What is going on? But that is reality, and as

(01:25):
we get into it, today and again we've got a
lot to get into. I want to say a big
thank you, big thank you to you as a listener
once again helping this show be as successful or more
successful than it has been in the past. With our
listenership downloads are healthy. I'll put it that way. The
text line, I gave you the number two seven oh five,
three four forty three eight. It's very healthy. Thank you

(01:47):
to all those that reach out. I don't always get
to those on the show. I get it because I'm
not a big fan of like when sports shows do
shout outs or live broadcast do shout outs. Because this
is not the request line. This is not you know,
text and call and tell your sweetheart you love them
and we'll play them a song. But you do feed
me a lot of good information, and I try to
respond to everyone that I can, So thank you for that.

(02:09):
I told you the biggest point of that text line
was not to reach out just to say anything about
the show. It was to help feed information so we
can feed that out to the masses. Right Like you know,
I recognize this show is kind of a giant spotlight
on our student athletes. It's a giant spotlight on those

(02:30):
student athletes. But the only way I can get the
light to shine on them is if I get some
things to shine it on if I know what's going on.
And you know, we do the best we can. But
I'm a one man band, and I asked you guys
to step up and help out and let us know
when things are happening, even if it doesn't seem like
a big deal to you, let us know when you
have and you continue to and I can't thank you

(02:52):
enough for that, So thank you. It truly takes a village,
it just does. I wish I had the I wish
I had the time. I wish I had sometimes the
energy to even go out and cover and watch these
things happen for myself, but I don't. And a lot
of times at night, too late at night, I'm scrolling

(03:13):
along and trying to find the information so we can
talk about it and highlight it on the show. But
that text line has been a godsend and you guys
have been great and utilizing it, So keep it up.
And hey, if you're in a game, if you know
of something going on in the sports world, in high
school sports in our region that you think deserves attention,
don't hesitate, Please, don't hesitate. Let me know. I've gotten

(03:36):
some great suggestions that I just haven't got around to we.
You know, some people have messaged me about some cross
country coaches, about some you know, athletes, and other other
sports that we don't typically cover here on the show,
and I'm kind of working on a day or trying
to figure out how to put those into a segment. Really,
you know, like I said, brag and shine a light

(03:56):
on those things, and hopefully we'll get to that sooner
than later. But keep it up. If there's something out
there that you think is worthy of attention, let me
know so we can give it the attention. Again. By
the way, that number two seven, five, three, four forty
three eight. But yeah, thanks for the listening, thanks for downloading,
thanks for subscribing, and thanks for providing the information you

(04:19):
have so far. It's been it's been awesome this fall,
and it's been easy. It's been man, this has been
the easiest I've ever had at doing this job. I
feel more relaxed. I feel like I can come in
and I got what I need because you guys are
doing your part. So so thank you for that. Okay,
so what do we got today, Well, we've got scores
to go over from Monday and Tuesday, which, by the way,

(04:40):
until I just said that, I almost forgot about Monday,
Like I'm looking at Tuesday scores and I almost forgot. Yeah,
we also have you know, we don't do this show
every day. I need to go back to Monday. So
glad I had that thought hit my brain. I haven't
had enough coffee yet, which is you know, if you
know me, is pretty typical. I got in bed late.
My kid had base last night. He had a big game.

(05:01):
I'll mention that later. It's not a lead of the
show today, but he had a big game last night
and we were kind of all on cloud nine with him,
and just you know, just didn't get in bed the
way I wanted to, and didn't get the sleep I
wanted to, and got here this morning and didn't get
coffee made as early as I wanted to, And so
just a little behind, which on show days is one percent.

(05:23):
Like if I'm on time on show days or ahead
of schedules, something's wrong. I forgot something. Maybe I didn't
get dressed that morning, and that's why I'm here early,
Like something is wrong. So this is normal, but I
still haven't had enough coffee, which is normal, but it
is true. So hopefully that'll kick in in a moment.
But as it does, and as I continue to work

(05:43):
on that, let's look at scores. Let's go back to
Monday first, and then we will look at Tuesday scores.
So Monday scores, and I just realized I wrote the
headline wrong, so I wrote it as Tuesday scores, which
is why it was confusing me. But if you go
to West Kentucky Star dot com, which is where we
post these Monday's high school scores, we had boys soccer

(06:05):
just one game. University Heights beat Mayfield three to two.
In girls soccer, Calloway County over Hopkinsville eight nil, Trigg
County over Graves County six to two, University Hots over
Mayfield eight nil. That's girls soccer on Monday. In volleyball,
Carlisle County over Callaway County three sets to none. Fulton
County beat Paduca Tillman three to two, Mayfield over CCA

(06:27):
three sets to none. So those are your scores from Monday.
What happened last night? On your Tuesday boys soccer, you
had Callowai County over Hoptown five to one, Mayfield over
Cardwall County six to two, and McCracken County beat their
rival Paduca Tilman four to one. That's boys soccer on Tuesday.

(06:50):
Girl soccer, Calloway County over Fort Campbell nine to one,
Marshall County over Murray they shut them out to nil,
and McCracken County over Paduca Tilman nine one. That's girls soccer.
Volleyball Baller Memorial over Livingston Central three sets to none,
Carlisle County over Fulton County three sets to none, Marshall

(07:10):
County over Murray three sets to none. Mayfield beat Saint
Mary three sets to none, and Paduca Tilman in the
most competitive game of the night, they beat CFS. Yeah, CFS,
I wrote it down wrong. So Paduca Tillman beat CFS
three two. That was volleyball from Tuesday. So there's there's
your scores. There they are. Bob's your uncle. What stood

(07:31):
out well in girls soccer on Tuesday? It was the
Murray game. Murray now has lost three straight. We bragged
on them last week, you know, kind of bouncing back.
Lost a lot of seniors right back in the hunt
and they've played three tough teams, arguably three teams ranked
higher than them in the region. I get it. Then
they've they've gone oh to three. Here's the deal, though,

(07:53):
super competitive, one nil to Callaway County and then playing
Marshall County twice, which is like, you know, I'm sure
the players are really happy with their schedule. You got
Callaway County and then Marshall County back to back. Now
you've got Calloway County coming up on Monday, so you
got a little bit of a break, and then you
play Callaway again. So that's four straight games against two
of the best teams of the region, right in the

(08:15):
middle of your season. Right now, they're owering three in
that stretch again, very very competitive games. I don't have
stats for those games. That's okay, it's fine. Hopefully they'll
get those up soon. But Murray has struggled just a
little bit in those games. But that's okay to struggle
right now, right, that's okay. It's the middle of the season.
These are the measuring stick games if you're Murray High

(08:36):
and you're trying to figure out who you are and
where you are this season. You got off to a
great start and you played the right competition to start
your season to kind of get into it. Now you're
in the meat of the season, you're getting that tough
competition and you're losing, fine, but it's close. You're competitive,
you're in it, and I hope you're seeing that you
have a shot. And I hope you're seeing what we've

(08:58):
all seen from the start of the season and that
girls soccer has a lot of parody, but you've got
a shot. That's one thing that stood out last night.
Like I said, don't have stats from that one. I
think I've got them on the Marshall's side, let me go, look, yes,
I do so Marshall County getting the two nil win
last night. You had goals from Cheney Green and Lily Hayes,

(09:20):
three saves from Savannah dott As a goalkeeper. So good
stuff there from the Lady Marshalls. Lady Marshall's, by the way,
still just one loss in the season that was too
Callaway County one nil. Speaking of Calloway County, they got
another win last night. They stay unbeaten on the season again.
They will play Murray on Monday, that's their next game

(09:42):
and then if you look at the schedule, you've got
Mayfield Apollo. Apollo's not great. Mayfield's maybe it's okay, not great, okay,
And then you've got Ohio County after that, not great.
And then you've got the showdown with mccraanken County in
a couple of weeks September twenty third. There you go.

(10:02):
And in fact, that is their first and only meeting
with McCracken County this season. They don't play Marshall County again.
They don't play Yeah, they play Murray again Monday, and
then McCracken County is still to go. So you know,
we're not counting our chickens yet, but you're at this
point unbeaten. Youve got a couple of games left that
you gotta circle and really really hold on to. I

(10:24):
know coach starts taking it game by game. I get
it one game at a time. Let's right foot, then
left foot. But some special things are still ahead of
Calloway County. We'll just put it that way. Some special
accomplishments are ahead of Callaoai County. Things gotta fall right,
things gotta go well. They got to keep playing well.
But right now, and I know they haven't played mccrackenhead

(10:45):
to head right now, they're the number one team in
the region. Clearly, Like we don't do power rankings right now.
We're just gonna do those in basketball because I just
don't see enough of these teams in the fall to
do that, and then football it's not really fair because
they're in different classes. So we've scrapped that for the fall.
But if you were to do power rankings, yes, Callawai
County is number one, Marshall County would be number two.

(11:08):
I'd probably go mccracking at three, Murray at four. That's
kind of how you would you would shake it out.
But so far, so good from Callai County, from Marshall County,
and honestly for Murray, they've been right where that I
think they probably felt they were gonna be and and
it's not a bad place to be. What else stood
out from last night? On the boy's side, things kind

(11:30):
of went to chalk. You'd Calloway County winning and McCracken
County winning over Tilman, like everything kind of win a
is chalk. Everything kind of went as expected. Callawai County
on the boys side, three losses on the season, not bad,
not bad at all. McCracken County and I just lost
where I had them hold on, and I want to
get it right before we go to break. McCracken County.
A few losses, but again a good win over Tillman.

(11:53):
And if you're you know, power ranking the boy's side,
it's a little harder because I think the parody at
the top is a little little us clear right now,
right like you go Murray, right, you go Murray at
number one. They're still unbeaten on the boy's side. They
did not play last night, but still unbeaten on the
boy's side. And then after that, I think it's kind
of jumbled. I think you got McCracken, callaway, Marshall, kind

(12:13):
of all all in that, all in that bunching, and
and you know mccrackett hasn't played Marshall yet. Like you've
still got some games that you need to see. You
need to get on paper, by the way, that game
tomorrow night. Marshall and McCracken on the boy's side, always
fun at Marshall, always fun. So some things we still
need to see. But but still good soccer in this region.

(12:34):
That's the point, all right, Gotta take a break way
up against it. More coffee coming, more coming, we'll talk football,
we'll preview Friday nights games and more right here on
Region one. What would you say here? Sports, real sports,
total coree.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Basketball, football, baseball. We have one goal here, Hello sports fans,
the Region one Sports Report on ninety nine to five
the fan drop all blocks, door, no reason on sports.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
As we move along here on the show. In your
Wednesday edition of the show and getting into some football talk.
For week four of the football season, we went we
reviewed scores from Monday and Tuesday in soccer and volleyball.
Now we preview our football matchups for Friday night. That's
kind of how it works here on the show. So
as we get into our matchups, first the matchups, who's

(13:28):
playing we don't have I still just get so upset
we don't have high school football pick them like. It's
still it still irks me that we don't have high
school football pick them for for a lot of reasons.
I want to pick. I want to see how I'm doing.
I want to see how you're doing. I want to
see if I'm actually as smart as I think I am.
I'm not, by the way, it's not that that's actually
I'm not. I don't think I'm very smart, but I
want to see I want to play. I want to

(13:50):
I'm competitive, like like like, why don't we have it?
So that's one reason. Number two because it helps me
stay organized, Like it's nice when you can go somewhere
and go, oh, here's the schedule for this week. Here
it is, and then you know, I miss getting to
see what you guys think. That was a way of
kind of gauging where the region is because you could
look and go, well, eighty percent or picking this team,

(14:12):
or it's fifty to fifty, literally fifty to fifty are
undecisive on this game. So I missed that. So I
really am still very upset that we don't have high
school football pick on West Kentucky Star. I have nothing
to do with it. People are still like, I still
get anger directed to me, like I just got lazy
and didn't do it. That's not me. I promote it
because I play it and it's on the website that

(14:34):
I work for, But that wasn't me. I gave them
the schedules at the start of every year. That's all
I did. So executing it, putting it out there and
making sure we had it, that's not me, and again
I don't know why. I don't know why, but we don't. Nonetheless,
I do have the schedule for you for this week.
I did do that research. I did set down yesterday

(14:55):
and painstakingly go through every game and get that. It's
took me like thirty seconds. But here's the schedule. Week
four of the football season. You have Paduka Tillman traveling
to Madisonville, North Hopkins, McCracken County at Mayfield. I think
those are two of your headline games You're undercard would
be Graves County and hosting Union County, Marshall County traveling

(15:18):
to Murray High. And then you've got Ballard Memorial at
Callaway County. Fulton County is at I don't even know
how to say this. Bruceton, Bruston, Bruceton, Tennessee. I have
no idea. Somebody's gonna text me and you're gonna be
laughing at that. I have no idea because I don't
know who this team is, honest to goodness, never heard
of this place never. And I drive through Tennessee a

(15:41):
lot like that's I drive through Tennessee a lot. Whether
I'm going to Jackson for a travel ball tournament, whether
I'm going to Memphis for SWAY or Nashville, like, never
heard of it, so that's always fun. Nonetheless, I'll look
up how'll pronounce it later and we'll talk about it later.
Let's talk about the headline games first of all, Madisonville
hosting Paduca Tillman. That is on Thursday night. By the way,

(16:02):
don't don't forget that is a Thursday night game. Unfortunately
it's at Madisonville, or I might actually be able to
make that game. I'm not sorry, Tilman, I'm not driving
to Madisonville to watch your football game. But but if
it was at home, there's a chance I would have
been able to catch that one. But a Thursday night game,
Madisonville hosting Paduka Tillman a lot of intrigue here. You've

(16:23):
got two unbeatens. You've got a four A Darling, You've
got the defending reigning state champs. You know, a favorite,
maybe still a heavy favorite to win that title again
this season, and a favorite to go undefeated taking on
five A Madisonville North Hopkins. Two very different styles of football,

(16:46):
very different We'll talk about that in a moment, but this,
if you're Tillman, and if you're a Tilman fan, this
is kind of the last the last one. I mean,
you expect when you get into district play with Franklin Simpson,
Allen County, Scottsville, who's not good by the way, Logan County,
who's pretty good. Like Logan County is unbeaten, and you

(17:07):
know they handled mccrackey like that could be a game.
But that's it, Like this district is going to be
you know, I mean your toughest game left is Logan County, Warrenees,
Callaway County, Christian County. You know, again all wins. So
as far as the schedule goes, as far as remaining unbeaten,
this is sort of one of the last you know
what six weeks left after well seven weeks left if

(17:30):
you count this week. But there's two games left that
are even in question. I don't think in doubt, but
in question, and this is one of them for Tillman.
Like I said, two very different styles. And by the way,
we have to go to Madisonville Graves County does in
a couple of weeks. I hate going there. I hate

(17:52):
going there. It's the worst from a hospitality standpoint. It's
the players I've never talked to a player in all
my time who has played there and been like, no,
it's fine. They all dislike it very much. Some home
cooking going on over that. I'll just say this, keep
it on the clock. Just keep it on a clock.
It seconds tend to tick away when you're on offense,

(18:15):
and they tend to not tick away as fast when
their team's on offense. I'm just saying, just keep an eye.
But not a fun place to play at all. That's
my point. And Tillman goes there now, it is a
you know, it's two very different styles. And to be
honest with you, Madisonville does not play a style of
football that is gonna work well against a team that
plays quick hitting, you know, home run hitting. Like when

(18:39):
you have a home run hitting offense that is not
valuing time of possession but is valuing let's go hit
the big play and score as many touchdowns as possible.
It doesn't tend to work out for you when you're Madisonville,
whose entire philosophy is give it to high Tower, let
him chew up yards, and we're gonna get a lot
of yards on the ground, and we're gonna get wins. Now,
Listeniville scores a lot of points, right, they score points.

(19:04):
They beat a good Union County team forty nine to thirteen. No,
Union County also runs the football. So again, when you
fall behind in those games, your style offense just doesn't
help you overcome that. But forty nine thirteen they beat
a not so great but it better look they're better
this season. Hopkinsville team, they beat them forty two nineteen.

(19:26):
And then Hopkins County Central, who's not good, they beat
them seventy two to fourteen. Now we don't have stats
from last Friday night's game, which is I mean, it's Wednesday, Madisonville,
It's Wednesday. Just saying you don't have them on a Monday. Okay,
Tuesday not as good Wednesday. Now you're just kind of
being lazy. Now, you're just kind of being lazy. But

(19:48):
three to zero, they've scored forty nine to forty two
and seventy four. They've held their oppontent. This is the
other thing, though we're gonna talk about the styles on offense.
Madisonville's defense has not given up but nineteen points. They're
most given up in a game so far thirteen nineteen fourteen.
That's pretty good. You look at their stats, you look

(20:09):
at their offense, they average thirty nine yards per game
throwing the football. They have thrown four interceptions in one touchdown.
That tells me they don't throw the football and they
don't want to throw the football. They run the football
at two hundred and twenty one yards per game. And
again this is only through two games of stats. I
don't have game three, but two hundred and twenty one

(20:29):
yards per game, ten rushing touchdowns, seven of those from
Marquez high Tower. He's a senior this season. I promise
you that kid's been playing varsity football for nine years.
I feel like I've talked about him every year for
the entirety of this show. Two hundred and fourteen yards
per game, seven touchdowns, four hundred and twenty seven yards
total through two games this season. And he's kind of

(20:52):
it like nobody else on that team. And they run
a lot of things that are like disguising looks and
misdirection encounters like they do. It's not just straight handoffs
like they're doing things. Yes, he's getting the football, but
it's a lot of misdirection. Hey look over here while
we run over there kind of stuff. But nobody else

(21:12):
is doing damage. Right. He's carried the football thirty seven
times in two weeks. Thirteen carries for the next guy
on the list, four hundred and twenty seven yards for
eight tower one oh five for the next guy like
he's it. You stop number two, you win this game
and probably win it, win it handily. Now their defense
is good, that'll be the key. Can their defense at

(21:36):
least slow you down and stop you and then them
still find a way to keep up with you offensively?
I don't know, but that's something to watch. Paduka Tilman.
Their offense, yeah, sixty three points against the mccracking County,
forty nine against Graves, fifty five against Mayfield. They have

(21:58):
given up twenty eight, fourteen and twenty one none. So
they have been known to give up points. But all
of those teams they've played so far, not one has
been a run heavy team. They're all teams that like
to try to throw the football offensively. For Tillman, they've
got three hundred and seventy three yards throwing per game,
seventeen touchdowns, five interceptions so far in the passing game,
running the football at one hundred and fifty six yards

(22:20):
per game, with six rushing touchdowns. Like I said, Madisonville
is gonna turn and hand the football off to High Tower,
and then they're gonna the next play turn and hand
the football off to High Tower. And then the next
play they're gonna turn and hand the football off to
High Tower. Paduka Tilman is gonna go, hey, can we
get a twenty yard game here? Hey? Crow, drop back
and throw. Look for Wade, look for Thompson, look for McPike. Like,

(22:44):
we're gonna get the football down the field. Baby, we're
gonna move, We're gonna get in the air. We're gonna
get down the field. We're gonna score over the top.
So two very that's gonna be a lot of fun
Thursday nut watching two very different types of offenses play,
but two very good defenses. So that's the key. Now
we'll break that down more on Friday. I'll give you
the keys of the game. We'll talk about who's gonna win.

(23:05):
But it's two good defenses against two very very contrasting offenses.
That's Tilman and Madisonville. Other games again, I think the
other heavyweight Friday is McCracken and Mayfield. Mayfield on a
bounce back week trying to overcome getting throttled by Tilman.

(23:26):
McCracken County coming off their first win of the season.
They throttled their opponent. This game's at Mayfield. Oh, Mayfield's
coming off the loss. Oh, like who there's some things
there that tell me that Mayfield, you know, And I
said this Monday, that's a game that could go. I mean,
McCracken could show up and show out and look completely

(23:47):
different and stun Mayfield and Mayfield be a little just
kind of go through the motions coming off the lost.
Still thinking about that loss. Traditionally and the coach Morris Era,
I would have said, I don't want to be McCracken
County because one way it could go is Mayfield could
have a hangover. McCracken County could stunn them. The other
way it could go as Mayfield comes out full of

(24:09):
you know what vinegar and they just absolutely roll in
this game. Well look at the numbers here. In a moment,
then we'll talk Graves in Union County, Marshall and Murray.
We got more. I gotta take a break though. This
is Region one Sports.

Speaker 1 (24:23):
Region one Sports, the best in the West.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
Preach you on sports as we roll along and wrap
it up here in our final segment on your Wednesday
edition of the show. Hey, by the way, don't forget.
You can text, you can get a hold of us.
You can you can send us information that I'll be
glad to accept. Two seven h five three four forty
three eight. I like giving out that number as much
as possible, just because I had somebody asked the other day, hey,
what was that number again? So I try to give

(25:03):
it out as much as possible so you can't miss it.
Two seven zero five three four forty three oh eight.
All right. We talked Tilman to Madisonville other games to
look forward to McCracken and Mayfield. I was mentioning that,
you know, in years past, you would go, boy, McCracken's
in trouble. I think that's still a little bit of
the case this time around. But we'll see as Mayfield

(25:25):
host McCracken. Mayfield coming off a fifty five to twenty
nine loss, who does not want to put their stats online?
I noticed that when they beat Graves and they beat
Christian County, those tats were up like asap. It's Wednesday,
no stats from the loss. I get it. I get it,
but they get McCracken County on Friday. McCracken County coming
off their first win of the season. Their stats are

(25:46):
up sixty five to twenty six over Northeast Clarksville. Not
a bad team, not a great team, not a bad team,
as McCracken finally got over the hump. Looking at the
Mustangs one and two on the season, they are throwing
the football now at two hundred and eleven yards per game,
eight passing touchdowns total, five interceptions total. Now Mannix O'Neill

(26:07):
has struggled a little bit this season five touchdowns to
four interceptions, one seventy seven in the air. The senior again,
it's been a little bit of a struggle compared to
where we expect him to be uh in the career
he's had running the football just one hundred and six
yards per game with seven rushing touchdowns. They don't run
it as much as I think they maybe could. We'll

(26:31):
see if that changes going forward. But McCracken County again
one to two, and again the numbers not great. The
defense has given up points. That's a concern, and they
got to go to Mayfield. Now Mayfield again, I don't
have their stats from the loss factored into this, but
through the first two weeks, they were throwing the football
at one hundred and thirty six yards per game, Gray

(26:52):
Robins still hadn't thrown a passing touch and again through
the first two weeks as a team, they were two
touchdowns in the year, one interception through the first two weeks,
running the football just eighty two yards per game, and
eight rushing touchdowns. Again through the first two weeks, I
would say those numbers didn't necessarily get better Friday night

(27:13):
as far as helping their averages, which again has cause
for concern if you were Mayfield and McCracken County. Although
Mayfield will be the favorite, although they should be the favorite.
Although let's just be honest, they're the better football team
and this is at Mayfield. All those things line up
to favor them. And that's where if you're wondering where

(27:34):
my pick may be heading, but McCracken's not. I mean, listen,
this is not an absolute slam dunk. This was a
thirty five to twenty one game a year ago. I
think McCracken may be a little bit better now. McCracken
had a couple of really good offensive playmakers last year,
but thirty five to twenty one. This was not an
absolute blowout. I think Mayne McCracken might have scored one

(27:56):
of those late I get thirty five to twenty one.
In this series, McCracken has won three games since twenty
and thirteen, I'm sorry, four games since twenty thirteen. Early
in the series in twenty fourteen and fifteen, both games
going into overtime, both going towards McCracken County. They won

(28:16):
big in twenty twenty forty two to seven. That's the
last win they've gotten in the series. Mayfield has rattled
off now for consecutive wins. So this is again, this
is should be more intriguing than I think people are
going to give it credit for. That's one of the
for me heavyweight battles on Friday Night. The other one

(28:38):
is my Graves County Eagles hosting Union County. Graves County
in a bit of I'm not gonna say desperation mode,
but they are certainly scrambling to try to right the
ship and get a win in Week four, which is
not something you say often about Graves County. Oh win
three to start the year. It's a tough schedule. It is.

(29:00):
It's a schedule. They made schedule. They they they put
out zero to three, and the concern has been the points. Now,
they've been competitive. They have been in the game most
of the game by halftime of the first three weeks,
Tillman had a little bit more of a lead at
halftime than the other two weeks. But that was also

(29:21):
an opportunity. You know, Graves came out, moved the football
in the third quarter and kind of shot themselves in
the foot from getting a score which could have made
it twenty eight to fourteen. Right you're down two scores.
It's it's a totally different ballgame. Instead, Will's kind of
fall off a little bit. Tilman takes advantage of some things.
They go on to win big forty nine to fourteen.

(29:44):
Same thing in the Mayfield game. It's a ballgame, early,
low scoring first quarter, does it you know, neither team scored.
Mayfield finally scored at the end of the first quarter.
They had a chance to stay in it and get
back in it, and then early in the third quarter
and just some things don't go their way. Mayfield takes advance.
They go on to a forty seven win against Murray.

(30:04):
Murray one of the best offenses in the state, regardless
of class. I think they were sixth in scoring in
the first two weeks. It's ten to seven at halftime,
right Yeah, and then Murray comes out, gets a safety
in the second and the third quarter it's twelve seven.
Graves scores a touchdown that's called back on a Pilindy

(30:25):
or they would have had a fourteen twelve lead in
the third quarter. So it's not like they're playing bad football.
You know, these scores and these losses don't indicate sort
of where the game is at at halftime in most
of the most of the cases. It's an old cliche,
but it's true. They're just not putting together four quarters
right now. They're putting together two, two and a half,

(30:49):
but not four. And that's where they've been coming up short.
That's where they've been. Like I said, it's fourteen to
twelve potentially early in that third quarter against Murray, they
held this amazing offense to ten first half points, a
team that has had been averaging like fifty a game,
and they still held them to a season low thirty

(31:10):
two by the end of the game. Just not putting
four quarters together and if they're gonna win with the
schedule they've got, they've got to find a way to
to get four quarters. Union County is no pushover. They're
not as quote unquote good this season as they traditionally are.
But that's saying a lot considering they're two to one

(31:33):
with blowout wins over Critneon County and Cardwell County. I mean,
they handled Cardwall County right now is two and one themselves.
They beat Marshall County at home, and listen, I get it.
Traditionally that's not saying much. Marshall's good this year. Marshall's
got some beef upfront. They can do some things. So
Union County is two and one. Let's look at the stats.

(31:53):
Union County again. They do not throw the football. This
is a run heavy and run off in team. Eighty
two yards passing per game, three touchdowns, five interceptions. They
run the football at two hundred and forty four yards
per game with non rushing total touchdowns so far. And
it's kind of two guys. They've got McPeak and Fletcher,

(32:13):
the law firm of McPeek and Fletcher. It's one hundred
and five yards and eighty nine yards per game, respectfully,
with three touchdowns each. So this is for the first
time this season Graves County playing a team that they're
not gonna have to worry about that team going over
the top. You know, their defensive backs and their linebackers
have had to worry the first three weeks of the
season about the pass game. They've played three phenomenal quarterbacks.

(32:39):
I mean, they have played the three best quarterbacks you know,
if you're ranking quarterbacks. They've played three of the top
four quarterbacks in the region. Stone Crow at Tillman, Gray
Robbins at Mayfield who did have an effect in that game,
and Why Robbins at at Murray. Those are three of
the top four. Mattox O'Neill. Then they play him coming
up in a few weeks. So they've I've seen some

(33:00):
dudes the first few weeks, and this week they'll see
a very different offensive team. They will not have to
worry about a team that can quick strike in the air.
Union County is ground and pound. Union County is gonna
want to eat clock, eat possession, eat yards on the ground.
And they've got a good defense. Don't get me wrong,
We'll talk about that later. But they finally kind of

(33:22):
see a team that gives them a completely different look
than the three best quarterbacks in the region. So the
defensive scheme I would think would be to all out,
go all in on the run. Offensively, Graves has got
to move the football. It's been a struggle offensively this season,
and again, not many excuses, but it is reality. They've

(33:45):
played defenses of Mayfield, Tillman, and Murray, who are all
very good, but they want to see the football move.
Just seventy two yards passing per game, one touchdown, two interceptions,
just eighty nine yards rushing per game so far with
four rushing touchdowns. I do think maybe it's the Graves
County bias. Maybe it's because I just want to see

(34:05):
it so bad. Maybe it's just because I'm such a
believer in the coaches and the players and I'm such
a homer. I think they moved the football this week.
Not saying it'll be easy. Union County has got a
good defense, They've got a really good defense. But I
think they're gonna move the football this week, and I
think their defense is gonna be helped out by the
fact that they don't have to worry about going You know,

(34:28):
teams going over the top and hitting them with the run,
and it's a measuring stick game. Union County lost forty
nine to thirteen to Madisonville. If you're going to compete
in your district and you play Madisonville in two weeks,
then you need a good showing on Friday night for

(34:48):
a good feeling going into district play. So a lot
of intriguing. This one Graves County oh and three for
the first time since twenty eleven. They had started at
least one three four times since twenty eleven. They've had
a winning record two out of the four times, and
both times they had a quote unquote losing record. It
was like one game under five hundred. This has been

(35:12):
a very good program, a very consistent program, and I
have no reason to hit the panic button yet because
of that. I'm not panicking, but I'm anxious. I'm anxious.
I'm not panicking, I'm not upset. I'm just anxious to
see my Eagles flex the way that I thought they
might flex a little bit this season. Everybody said they

(35:32):
were gonna be down. We know they've got the talent
and the skills of skill spots. We know what they've got.
Good coaching. We know they've got a consistent and good
program with certain expectations. So I'm not upset, not jumping
off the bandwagon. I'll never jump off the bandwagon. I'm
just getting anxious to see them play good football. And
I think Friday night, is it all right? What else

(35:53):
we got? We got Murray and Marshall. Yes, Murray three
and Oh Marshall two in one one that you know,
this is a game. Murray's gonna be a heavy favorite.
It's at Murray, which is not fun to play at.
I got just tell you from experience, it's not fun.
I hope Marshall Connie doesn't see the antics that we
saw last week. So I'll just leave it at that.

(36:16):
Go watch the video, Go go look at the message boards,
go look at the Facebook post. Just just you know
some things. I wish Murray would clean up, just saying.
And if they do, man, it can be hard not
to root for him the rest of the year because
they're good. But Murray three and Oh Murray. So far
this season, a forty eight thirty four went over Apollo,

(36:39):
a fifty ten went over Callaway, a thirty two to
fourteen win over Grapes, and again remember that was ten
what ten seven? Ten? I don't remember that they'd only
scored ten points in the first half. Stat Wise, on
the season, they're throwing the football at two hundred and
forty eight yards per game, eight touchdowns, one pick for
White Robbins. That pick was thrown against Grapes County last week.

(37:00):
Two hundred and twenty six rushing yards per game, nine touchdowns.
Robbins leads the way with seventy four rushing yards per game.
He has yet to score a rushing touchdown, which is surprising,
to be honest. And of course they've got Martin, a
receiver who ninety three yards six of those eight touchdowns
so far. It kind of is like, figure out a

(37:20):
way to take Martin out of the equation and you
might have some success. But that's been easier said than done.
I think Graves did a really good job of that
in the first half, which was the big difference, and
he kind of broke free a little bit in the
second half, which was the difference. The Marshalls on the season, again,
two and one have not played quite the same level
of schedule, but they've played the schedule they needed to play,

(37:43):
and I think they would tell you that they're frustrated
that they're not going into this game three and oho.
They feel like they should be three and oh and
probably should be. A forty two to twenty nine win
over Critney County, who is down this year, a thirty
to twenty eight loss to Cadwell County on the road,
and then a com back twenty eight twenty seven win
over Trick County. So they have been given their fans

(38:04):
a lot of anxiety in those last two weeks. Marshall
stat wise, one hundred and fifty five yards per game passing.
I'm sorry, I read that completely wrong. One hundred and
forty five yards passing per game, five touchdowns, two picks,
one hundred and ninety one rushing yards per game, eight
total touchdowns. They're gonna need to run the football with success.

(38:26):
Jake Thomason has been really good the sophomore, one hundred
and thirty one yards per game. I think you got
a you got a ground and pound. You gotta control clock,
you gotta control possession. Neilan Jask the senior, I think
he's the one of the more underrated quarterbacks and underappreciated
quarterbacks in the region. Has never had a year obviously.

(38:46):
I mean Marshall's been what they've been. He's never had
a year where he's just blown you away with what
he does in the passing game. But he's been a
great game manager, a great offensive leader. And when he's
got weapons that he can utilize, when he's got a
running game behind him, when he's got guys up front
that can block for him, he tends to be able
to show you what he's what he's capable of. And

(39:06):
this year he's got those things. So be a game manager,
don't turn the football over the be the guy that
be the distributor, get the football where it needs to go.
See if they can find some run game, and we'll
see how this game goes. But I'm looking forward to that.
And that's it for me. I'm out of time, I'm
out of topic. Back on Friday with a breakdown to

(39:28):
those games. We'll preview them, we'll talk about keys to
the games, we'll make our picks and more. Until then,
hope you enjoyed. This has been Region one Sports
